Speaker 2: Yeah, it just feels like you throw out like Matt Campbell at Iowa State, his name, he was like Kirk Farrance back in the day at Iowa it was like kurk Farence. He's up for that job. Oh they could hire Kurtin and he never left, which, hey, good for him. You find a place, you love, a place, there's do nothing wrong with staying in a place, and I love that. Some of the greatest coaches of all time. No, I know it's different, and money's different. But when you're part of that fabric, that community, and that's you and that's your city, your town, your people, your alumni, we win, we lose together. Just something to be said for that. And I know it's opening up the scrap book and the way it used to be, but there is something to be said about that, the loyalty that comes on both sides building something. Penn State thought they had something. I mean, they gave him a ten year extension and it just didn't work out. He wasn't going and he wasn't beating these top ten teams. You can't tell me that you're amongst the great teams in college football if you can't beat the great teams in college football. Yeah, Paulie, I.

Speaker 2: I don't know his makeup, but what would you guys do? I once again, i'd have to have I'd have to know everything about Indiana. Indiana doesn't have a sugar Daddy there for their football program. It's still a basketball school. It's just like no matter what Bill Belichick does at North Carolina, there's still a basketball school. Kentucky there's still a basketball school. They're just certain schools that that's what you think of. I would hope he stays at Indiana if you're building something and you know, he's established a culture at previous stops where he wins, he's not afraid, you know, tug on Superman's cap. They go out to Oregon and win that game. That was my surprise of the weekend. It wasn't that they won, it was how they won. You got a quarterback and you got a couple of skilled wide receives. I mean, they have skilled position players and you've got a really good defense there. And it's not just hey, we're going to go to the playoffs. If I'm Indiana, I got to start thinking and I should start thinking a bigger picture here playing for a national championship. Yes, Tod, I hope he stays too.

Speaker 7: Wouldn't it be nice to be a legend for many years at a school that may not be quite as big as some of the you know, more elite or famous programs over the years. Then you know, to grab me obviously someone else's money. If he wants some more money and he wants to say, look, you know, graduated to Penn state. But there's definitely something to be said for continuing to build if there's enough money in place in the world of NIL to just stay there.

He's a bigger legend because of what he did at Clemson if he was at Alabama. No, not Nick Saban, He's just an Alabama football coach. But you build this program into a national power, that means more.

Speaker 2: But I don't know if it means more to them. I mean, I can romanticize about this and say, boy, wouldn't it be great if you showed sustainability for twenty years. I don't know if they care. I don't know if they should care. But I'm only going by growing up. You know, you know that that coach is going to be at that university now with the money with NIL, with boosters and transfers, and I mean it's just different. It's almost like if you don't take another job, you're falling behind. You know, Hey, you got offered that job. Hey, if they're going to stop calling, I mean, they eventually stopped calling. I think Ty Simpson's a really good quarterback, and you know he's riding the ship. But you know they could have lost the game against Missouri. I just think when you go you go into the SEC certain you know, Georgia, Alabama, certain places, Florida, you gotta be careful you don't get swallowed up because it's different. I mean, you dubbed they love their football, but not like they do in Alabama. And all of a sudden, it doesn't take long for you know, the Pitchfork Porks to come out.

There aren't many guys like Mark few at Gonzaga, and he flirted with the UCLA job years years ago. I like when they stay. I like seeing that or having that familiarity. But Mark Fugh has been there for twenty six seasons at Gonzaga and he's turned them into a powerhouse and has no reason to leave. All right, Zack and Knoxville, Good morning, Zach. Speaker 2: Yes, it happened two many years ago at a golf tournament, and it was a kind of a celebrity golf tournament. Each group had a celebrity in the group, and everybody, you know, keyed off and had fun, played best ball, and I got to the fifteenth hole and I'm just kind of taking inventory, asking people what they do for a living. And you know, there was a woman there, a school teacher, had somebody there who was a businessman. And then I talked to Dan, who was in my group, and I said, what do you do Dan? He goes, I write books. I said anything that I've read. He goes, I don't know the Da Vinci code. And I went, oh my god, it's Dan Brown. Wait a minute, hold on, he's the celebrity. And I got mad at the whole well, I kind of act like it was mad at the host, and I said, ow Brown was the celebrity. He goes, yeah, I thought you would appreciate that. And I went, oh my god, And of course I called my wife right away. I go, hey, I'm playing golf and I'm playing golf with Dan Brown. So you're playing golf with the guy who has the same name as the guy who wrote the Da Vinci cat. I go, no, no, it's him, and she goes, well, wait, aren't you the celebrity in her I said, I'm supposed to be, but I'm not. And I told that to Dan Brown, and because I said, you know, I gotta be honest, I thought I was the celebrity, and he said, you can be if you want. But then then he told me how many millions of books he sold with the da Vinci Code. But he talked about how he had death threats because and he had to have an armed guard in his garage, like he had to have arm guard twenty four to seven because of the Da Vinci Code. And he since moved out of where he was in New Hampshire. But and I can talk about it now, but I was fascinating where he said, you know, you write something, you're proud of something, and then you live in fear for years that they had to have somebody that was going to be outside their house and then I think somebody in the garage as well. But yeah, Dan Brown he was the celebrity. So thank you, Zach, thank you for the phone call and bringing up painful memories. Buddha in San Francisco, Hi Buddha.

He had fifteen thousand dollars. I think I got this right from Dylan. He bet fifteen thousand dollars on Jared Goff scoring the first touchdown. It would have been that guy would have gotten forty five thousand dollars if they allowed that touchdown with Jared Goff.

He didn't, and it appears that he purposely didn't put his hands there because they were aware of the rule. So it doesn't appear that the Lions broke any rule for a legal motion. When you look at it, it's like the Lions new that I can line up. I can stand behind the center. I can't almost like get underneath center. It's a really convoluted rule, Like.

Let them go start blasting people by the way. You know, they got got rid of the kickoff for a little while. Now it's back, and damn there are some collisions. There are more violent collisions, it feels like now than there were before when they were, you know, having regular kickoffs. It's happening more often and there are plays where you go, wow, they are hitting Cody in Washington high code. What's on your mind today?

You and the boys special treat every morning and do best in the worse of the weekend, and then just said kind of a quick question, that's the weekend Mariners. Obviously going through the roller coaster of emotions of that fifteen inning game and then coming out of going to Toronto winning that first game. That's huge. Twenty four years since the Alcs only team never been to the World Series. Let's hope we get there. Worst the weekend Oregon, that was rough. I had a feeling and I thought of Dennis Green at the end of they are who we thought they were. And then the question Dan is I've always been fascinated and obviously your story and kind of timeline and you know, the chapters of what you've done and been through at the Mothership when you were with ESPN, do.

Speaker 2: Mid nineties we had a pretty good run. I was doing Sports Center, got to cover the Chicago Bulls winning championships. Sports Center had exploded. We started doing those Sports Center commercials and it was just different, just a different feel, and every single night it was live TV. Back then you might have gotten a result, at least a score, but you tuned in to watch the highlights. We were having fun with the highlights. We were getting away with things management. We would always test management just to see if they stayed up and watched the show, and then we would throw some things out and then we'd come in the next day and be like, Okay. Now you would get management to say, hey, nice show last night, and I realized they didn't watch, you know, be like okay, and you know, I remember my producer said, you know, you should just ask what was the best part of the show to see what they say, because they would. They would do that with the radio show. They had great show. I go okay, thank you, Yes, Marvin.

Speaker 8: During that run, were there guys that you felt like, are his egos a little bit out of control? Because now you guys are getting into movies, TV shows, music videos. Was there any of that going on during that time?

Like all of a sudden, it's like, oh my god, wow, yeah, Paul.

Speaker 2: It's close, Okay. Rick Neuheisel, CBS Sports college football analyst, and he was in Eugene for the big upset with Indiana and Oregon, which we'll talk about in a moment. We been spending a lot of time talking about Penn State. Did Penn State do the right thing with James Franklin.

Speaker 19: You know, it's hard to imagine a business saying it's the right thing when they're letting fifty million dollars go out the door in dead money, which is exactly what this is. But I think, Dan, what we're in is an era where we're asking so much of our fan base to participate financially with nil, you know, the collectives. I know we're doing it in house, but still that money's got to come from somewhere. And so I think what we've got is a bunch of kind of pseudo owners. And this is what happened with Jimbo Fisher at Texas A and m some rich oil guy said he's got to go all rite the check, and I'm sure something close to that happened at Penn State and Pat Craft had to move.

Speaker 2: You know, the record. If you just look at his record overall record, you go, that's pretty impressive, and just about any university would sign up for that. But I said last week, there's there's the blue blood programs that wouldn't put up with that kind of one loss record to ranked teams. Ohio State, wo Michigan Wood, and Alabama wouldn't, Georgia wouldn't. Penn State had to decide are we do we want to be in that group? Are we going to accept this? And I thought Franklin did a wonderful job in restoring, you know, agreed some of the greatness to that program, but it's not a coincidence that he couldn't beat, you know, ranked teams.

I agree with that there was something in the DNA that just didn't allow them to play free in those games, So I get it. I don't know that in the middle of the season it makes a lot of sense, but it does put them as the best job available.

Speaker 2: The Indiana Handling Oregon you were at that game, and it felt like Indiana was the better team and kind of took control of it. Was there a turning point for you in that game?

Speaker 19: I was thinking that the Oregon offense would be just too fast. I just had in my mind, you know, maybe you know, the Midwestern farm Plotters would be on defense and it was just going to be lightning fast. Whether it be the pace or the speed of the players. They kept their edges all day long. That is a dang good defense playing for Indiana, to go along with a you know, rising star in Fernando Mendoz and two really good probable NFL guys playing wide receiver. I just think that's a really good football team. And I think it was kind of shocking to Oregon that they could not use their speed to an advantage. Give the Hoosiers all the credit in the world.

Speaker 2: Talking to Rick new High this CBS Sports college football analysts, they were in Eugene for Indiana's win at Oregon. I'm watching the broadcast and you were very matter of factly saying Bill Belichick will be relieved of his duties at North Carolina or something similar to that. At the end of the year.

Speaker 19: I can't imagine this going much longer if what we're seeing continues, and what we're seeing is a very average to below average team on the field that doesn't look like they're having any fun, doesn't look inspired. The coach has taken, you know, breaks.

Speaker 19: I asked a couple of guys that I know who played for coach Belichick, would he ever take like the little rest vacations in the middle of a bye week. Says that car was parked in that parking lot twenty four to seven. That's where he lived. I just don't see this as something that both sides are going to say can continue one for the legacy, especially if the money's right for Belichick. I see at the end of the season this going in a vastly different direction.

Speaker 2: A capital D. I thought it was a big win for USC, an impressive win to beat Michigan. I don't know how good Michigan is, and I'm not quite sure how good USC is, but you got to win that game, knowing you got Notre Dame this weekend.

Speaker 19: To me, it's the best win Lincoln Riley's had at SC because, as you point out, he has to be able to play with the bullies, and Michigan had just run rough shot over Nebraska, not so much in the points, but in terms of just running the ball. For SC to hold up in the trenches and to find a way to win that game puts them in the contest. And now they've got a real banner game this week against the Irish. Kind of a must win for both of them. As it relates to CFP.

Speaker 19: You know, I've never been there for a game. I have been there for spring practice. I got to speak at a spring clinic for Brian Kelly. I have been there. Tony Alfred used to be their running back coach. He was my running back coach at Washington, so he gave me the tour. The place is unbelievable. I mean it is unbelievable. You're in for a treat, but it's going to be raucous for game day. And how about the Irish with just kind of presto change. Oh, they're back right controlling their own destiny again with the two quality losses.
