Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: Pirates pitcher Paul Schemes, Cy Young Winner joins us in an hour from now. Reggie Miller will stop by as well Pat forty, Sports Illustrated senior writer, host of Others Receiving Votes podcast at SI dot com. He will be at the Texas Georgia game on Saturday, then on site for USC Oregon as well. Oh you went to Texas storage, I'm sorry. Then you'll be at the USC Oregon game. You're moving around sort of like Lane Kiffin is. So what do you make of this tour of the South with Lane Kiffin?

00:00:39
Speaker 3: I need the private jet access that Lane and his family has right now. It's brazen, it's I think insulting to the current Mississippi team, but it's Lane Kiffen. And Lane loves to toy with people's emotions, loves to Grant's fan, loves to be out in front of whatever's going on. I think he thrives on chaos to would agree, and so sending your family to Florida and to LSU when there's zero points zero percent chance that that's not going to become a big public deal is pretty on brand for Lane. But I mean, if I'm an Old Miss fan, if I'm an Old Miss player and you've bought in for this season that's the best the school's had in sixty years, and your coach's family's out doing this, I'd be a little bit ticked.

00:01:33
Speaker 2: Yeah, I would want to ask my coach. I would want to say, are you all in with us?

00:01:40
Speaker 4: Right?

00:01:41
Speaker 5: And I think that's fair to ask.

00:01:42
Speaker 2: If the captain's got together with Lane to say, hey, are you all in with us? This feels like and you would know better than me, Pat, I have no information. Maybe somebody's agent leaked that Lane's family was going to LSU and going to Florida. Maybe they you go back to Ole Miss and boost the offer. I mean, this is this is college football today?

00:02:07
Speaker 3: Well, it sure is. And that's the thing. The agents have massive powers. Agents, Jimmy Sexton the most powerful of all of them. And Jimmy's not above playing hardball. And I think if he feels like, you know, this is something that's going to help us get a better deal, then sure I wouldn't be surprised by that at all. You know that that that is how things work in a college football ecosystem. Dan that, as you know, the hiring cycle is completely ridiculous and stupid and unfolds during the season, and it doesn't matter if you're having a great season, You're still going to get caught up in it if you are a coach who's who's being wanted here? And I just have never quite understood the tolerance level for this. Actually asked Greg Sankie on Saturday, he was at Texas Georgia. I said, you know, any problem with within your conference with schools poaching coaches during a season and it's the best season Ole Missus had in decades. And He's like, well, I control what I can control, and I can't control that, but I think they could perhaps exert a little more control on how the hiring cycle works.

00:03:17
Speaker 2: Virginia Tech James Franklin, what do you think of that partnership?

00:03:21
Speaker 3: I like it. I think it's good. I think it's good for both, you know. Franklin his biggest problem with Ohio State and Michigan. Guess what, they're not in the ACC and nobody liked them is in the ACC, especially with Clemson and Florida State currently in the shape that they're in and the program with the third most acc titles this century is Virginia Tech, behind Clemson, Florida State. They've won four of them. That's a good program when they're up and going. They got a little outdated, they got a little bit behind, maybe in terms of compensation model for players, but they say that all in now, and James Franklin can win you a ten games, absolutely, Can he win eleven twelve, we'll see. But in that league, I think he got a better chance.

00:04:09
Speaker 4: To do it.

00:04:10
Speaker 3: And in that league, he got a better chance to finish one or two and go to the playoff.

00:04:14
Speaker 5: What's Penn State doing?

00:04:17
Speaker 3: That's a good question, you know. I mean, I think they're looking in a lot of different areas. You know. I think Signetti would have been probably the first option there, but he quickly took himself out of it. I don't think Matt Rule was a super attractive option to begin with. He's taken himself out of it. A lot of talk about assistant coaches, Brian Hartline at Ohio State, possibly Joe Brady from the NFL who was with the Buffalo Bills, Eli Drinkwitz, maybe from Missouri. So there are options there, but that one's been maybe a little more quiet than the SEC searches.

00:04:53
Speaker 2: What about the other job openings? What do you got Arkansas, Ucla, Oklahoma State?

00:04:58
Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, all of those. You know Arkansas again, that was one where Rent Lashley made a lot of sense, but he's taken his name out. I think Alex Golish at South Florida he's done a good job there could be in play possibly at an Arkansas. He was the offensive coordinator for Josh Ipel at Tennessee. Ucla is an interesting one. I'm not sure where they're at out there. I still think that could be an attractive job, but they've been so far behind from a money standpoint that how much do they want to catch up? We're going to find out. Oklahoma State been a lot to talk about some coaches from Texas possibly going there, and that makes sense from a recruiting standpoint. Eric Morris at North Texas who's having a great season ten and one and plays an entertaining offense. Some people of that nature.

00:05:48
Speaker 2: We're talking to Pat forty Sports Illustrated senior writer the Sarkesian Rumors.

00:05:54
Speaker 5: Diana Luscini on.

00:05:55
Speaker 2: Her podcast talked about that his people are exploring, or at least putting feelers out there for the NFL. What do you make of that, especially if they don't make the playoffs.

00:06:07
Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, it wouldn't be shocked if he's at least gonna look at it. And I would trust Diana Rassini's reporting on that. But yeah, I don't think Texas is like fed up with Steve Sarkisian to the point of like please go. I don't think they've reached that point. This season's definitely been a disappointment. You start number one, you're now seven and three, you're probably out of the playoff. Maybe if you beat Texas A and M you can reverse that, But I would say next year would be a critical mass year for him. And here's the question there, Dan, if you are pretty well tethered to arch Manning and you don't think arch Manning's act good, maybe you're like, Okay, this might be time to get out instead of going through year two with Arch being just an okay quarterback and the blame coming back on you.

00:06:59
Speaker 2: How And is the USC Oregon game very.

00:07:03
Speaker 3: You know, Oregon's in great position, but USC is pushing to try to get into the playoff. They only have the two losses ones at Notre Dame, so their resume is not bad. They need a big skin, and certainly or winning at Eugene would would provide that tough place to win Indiana did it, but historically very hard place to win. Lincoln Riley could use it. You know, he's he's had a good year. It had been a downward trend from his first year until this season. Maybe reversing that now. A big way to reverse it is to win this game, get finished ten to two and make the playoff.

00:07:43
Speaker 2: Has he bought himself another year no matter what the outcome is this weekend?

00:07:48
Speaker 3: Yeah? Yeah, mostly because he's too expensive. I mean, is his buyouts astronomical? And I think it's easier it's still on top of that because they're they're eight and two and a wing. You know, there should worse be nine and three in the regular season close to the playoff chase, that sort of thing. I've gotten over some of the shortcomings that we've seen year after year from him. So I think there's definite signs of improvement and they've got a big recruiting class coming in for next year.

00:08:14
Speaker 2: Safe travels, Pat, thanks for joining.

00:08:16
Speaker 3: Us, my pleasure, Dan, Thank you.

00:08:18
Speaker 2: Pat forty Sports Illustrated senior writer, host of Others Receiving Votes podcast at si dot com. He'll be at the USC Oregon game. A couple of phone calls in here Chris and Syracuse leads yous off.

00:08:31
Speaker 5: Good morning, Chris Hey, Thank you, Dan Hey.

00:08:33
Speaker 6: A couple questions for you if you are having your Jordan flu game today, which stand Nett would be your Scottie Pippin helping you out of the studio at noon? And also, the consensus when Michaeh. Parson's trade went down was that the Cowboys were the clear losers in the deal. With the move the Cowboys have made and the money they've saved to maybe sign guys like George Pickens next year, and the picks they still have, you think in a year or two, the Cowboys could be seen as winners or at least a one in the deal.

00:09:01
Speaker 5: Yes, I do.

00:09:03
Speaker 2: But are you going to pay George Pickens now he's in the last year of his contract.

00:09:07
Speaker 5: You're gonna pay him? See the Lamb money.

00:09:10
Speaker 2: That's a whole lot of money you got tied up and your quarterback. Yeah, the Michael Parsons. Look, I get Michael Parsons that at that price that price point. I didn't want him for you know, forty seven million dollars, but you could have had him for thirty five million dollars if you were proactive, you knew you wanted to sign him, then you could have signed him. And I do think they're a better team with Michaeh Parsons than Quinn Williams, although I do like Quinn Williams a lot. There there's who else is like Michaeh Parsons, three or four players maybe you know that's just a difference maker. And that Green Bay defense is great now. They were really good before he got there. Now they're great. But yeah, I think that this current turned out to be a positive here. But you did give up draft cap to bring Quinn Williams in, Yeah, pulling.

00:10:03
Speaker 7: The good thing for the Cowboys. They have Quinn Williams under contract for the next two years at twenty two million per year, which is relatively fair for a guy of his stature.

00:10:13
Speaker 5: Zach and Knoxville, Zach, what's on your mind? ADP?

00:10:18
Speaker 8: Thanks for taking my call on I just wanted to correct you yesterday. He had the first name right, But Jeremiah Smith is the best player in college football. But just wanted to say that you have that pull correct question yesterday about why you're watching the game last night and just seeing the inspired performance of the Cowboys coming together after the tragic loss of Marshawn neland that's why I watched sports, people of all different backgrounds coming together for a common goal and just an escape from everyday reality.

00:10:47
Speaker 5: So I just wanted to throw that out there.

00:10:49
Speaker 2: Oh so you're saying that the best player in college football is named Jeremiah but it's Jeremiah Smith, not Jeremiah Love.

00:10:56
Speaker 4: Correct.

00:10:57
Speaker 5: Okay, all right, I'm not going to argue with it.

00:11:01
Speaker 2: I think Jeremiah Smith at Ohio State has hurt because from the standpoint of they're going to try to make sure he doesn't beat the opposition. Jeremiah Loves still going to get the ball. And you got another running back who's really good and he's just had more splash plays than anybody and he's really good, really good.

00:11:22
Speaker 5: But it's the running back position.

00:11:24
Speaker 2: And here we are again because running backs in the first round often treated like a football faux pas. Where you go, man, we can't pass up that talent. Bjon Robinson in Atlanta, Jamir Gibbs in Detroit and then Vegas takes Ashton genty. Now I was all for that, said prior to the draft, that's where I was hoping he would go. It gives Geno Smith kind of a safety valve, somebody who can kind of move the chains a little bit there, and he was very exciting at Boise State. Well, he's nineteenth in the NFL and rushing yards sixteen in attempts.

00:12:00
Speaker 5: The problem I.

00:12:00
Speaker 2: Have is, if you're gonna draft somebody that high, then use him. He had six carries for seven yards. Why are you drafting him?

00:12:14
Speaker 5: Now?

00:12:14
Speaker 2: I probably would have thrown the ball to Brock Bauers twenty times last night. But in today's NFL, you are seeing teams that are using their running back and you know, you get that running back wide receiver there. He should be having twenty to twenty five touches unless they made a mistake. But I'd like to see Ashton Gent be able to get more touches. I think that that's that's the one thing that I was noticing. Well, there's a lot of things I noticed with the Raiders where you're like, oh my god, Gino Smith's regressed here. And I did think they'd be a playoff caliber team. I thought Pete Carroll, Max Crosby, Brock Bauer, Gino Smith has played well. I got Ashton Genty, Okay, I got something to work with here, and then I realize it's not working, not working at all.

00:13:11
Speaker 7: Yeah, Paul, Pro Football Focus, does you know mid season reports on different positions in the sport, they had the Vegas Raiders offensive line rank the second worst in the NFL this year in production.

00:13:22
Speaker 5: Yeah, second worst.

00:13:24
Speaker 2: That's always where I would go if I if I have a high draft pick, unless I'm sold on the quarterback, you know that he's that's our guy. We got our guy. Can't miss with this guy, well, you can always miss. I would go offense or defensive line, preferably offensive line. Everything starts there. That dictates everything. If I have an offensive line that can control the ball, my defense isn't on the field. When they do come on, you know they're they're gonna have the energy. It's not like there's going to be sustainable drives the opposition you're gonna negate that. But my offensive line dictates everything. You win in the trenches, high school, college pro you got to have good linemen, and that's where I would invest now the running back sometimes, and I was all for Sakwon Barkley for the Giants because I thought, you know what, Eli Manning has got his safety valve there, and it never worked out. It worked out for Philadelphia b Jon Robinson, his coach says he's the best player in football. Why hasn't he been able to showcase that. Krista mccaffery's having a really good year. I think he's second for Offensive Player of the Year. But whenever he's healthy, he's great. It's just that running back is always tricky. And then you got Jeremiah Love from Notre Dame. Might be a top fifteen pick, but we might be talking about him next year at this time and saying, did somebody get a great pick or did the make a mistake. It's the running back position, yeah, Paul.

00:15:03
Speaker 7: It's like the Lion's taking Jamiir Gibbs earlier than people thought in that draft. But they already had a good offensive line in place when he showed up there. They had Pine Seoul, they had a good offensive line that he walked into. He didn't walk in like Ashton Genty fighting for his life to get out of the backfield.

00:15:18
Speaker 5: Yes, Marvin.

00:15:19
Speaker 9: And it's always easier to find a quality running back than a quality offensive lineman. You can find a good fast a he's five ten, two twenty in Karna four to three. Those guys are everywhere, and you've seen that with the Chiefs. What isaiaha Cheko? So I could pick up a quality running back in the late rounds of the draft.

00:15:36
Speaker 2: Well, like Rico Dowdell, like he's a really good running back.

00:15:41
Speaker 5: Yes, Dylan.

00:15:42
Speaker 1: I feel like the Patriots did a good job of this this year where they drafted Will Campbell in the first round and yeah, Traveon Henderson and they started featuring Henderson like only a few weeks ago.

00:15:51
Speaker 5: But they're running all over people.

00:15:53
Speaker 2: You got to control the line of scrimmage. As I've pointed out many times, as great as Mahomes is, and maybe he's the second greatest quarterback of all time, what's happened when his offensive line isn't good?

00:16:05
Speaker 5: He is mortal.

00:16:08
Speaker 2: In those two Super Bowls he lost, he got humbled because he had no protection whatsoever. Any great quarterback will tell you give me protection.

00:16:19
Speaker 5: I like my chances, especially with Mahomes.

00:16:23
Speaker 2: But we've always looked at that offensive line, and it's like, oh boy, and it was, you know, on display again last year it was on display against Tampa Bay. The Great Ones still need a great offensive line or a good offensive line.

00:16:37
Speaker 5: All right, we'll take a break.

00:16:39
Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

00:16:48
Speaker 10: Hey, we're Cavino and Rich Fox Sports Radio every day five to seven pm Eastern.

00:16:53
Speaker 5: But here's the thing.

00:16:54
Speaker 10: We never have enough time to get to everything we want to get to.

00:16:57
Speaker 11: And that's why we have a brand new podcast called over Promised. You see, we're having so much fun in our two hour show. We never get to everything, honestly, because this guy is over promising things we never have time for. Yeah, you blubber this lame in me.

00:17:11
Speaker 10: Well you know what it's called over promise. You should be good at it because you've been over promising women for years.

00:17:16
Speaker 11: Well, it's a Covino and Rich after show, and we want you to be a part of it. We're gonna be talking sports, of course, but we're also gonna talk life and relationships and if Rich and I are arguing about something or we didn't have enough time. It will continue on our after show called over Promised.

00:17:30
Speaker 10: Well, if you don't get enough Covino and Rich, make sure you check out over Promised and also Uncensored by the way, so maybe we'll go at it even.

00:17:36
Speaker 4: A little harder.

00:17:37
Speaker 10: It's gonna be the best after show podcast of all time.

00:17:40
Speaker 11: There you go, over Promising, and remember you could see on YouTube, but definitely join us. Listen Over Promised with Cavino and Rich on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:17:51
Speaker 2: Earlier this year, we surprised Paul's Schemes with the Tory Lavello the Arizona Diamondbacks. He was going to be managing the National League All Star team and he called in to when Paul Schemes was on the show to surprise him and say you're going to be my starting pitcher. That was pretty cool, and Paul ended up being the Rookie of the Year. Of course, he's the Nation League Cy Young Winner. He won ten games for the Pirates and probably feels like twenty games, but you know, the stats are incredible. Also when you think about it, he was a catcher. He was a scrawnee kid. He ended up going to Air Force Academy, and he was also a great hitter, great hitter, and then all of a sudden kind of grew into his body and then started pitching, and then ended up leaving Air Force Academy, going to LSU, winning a national championship, then going to the Pirates, and the rest is histories. They like to say he's twenty three years of age and seems to have the world by the baseballs eight seven seven three DP show email address DPA Dan Patrick dot com, twitter handle at DP shell all schemes joining us on the program.

00:19:05
Speaker 5: So where is the cy Young?

00:19:08
Speaker 12: I haven't gotten it yet? Yeah, I think we I think we get it into January. And where are you going to put it? It'll be on the probably on the wallet right behind me, somewhere on the nice and high so you can see it.

00:19:19
Speaker 2: In zooms like this, it's an empty wall. There's where are all the awards, Rookie of the Year. What we don't have anything in there?

00:19:26
Speaker 12: Yeah, we're moving in. Uh we haven't. This is the last room that we've gotten to. So we have it's all in the room, we just haven't put it up yet.

00:19:35
Speaker 5: How surprised. Were you that it was unanimous?

00:19:38
Speaker 12: That was surprising. I mean, obviously that's a huge honor. Winning the cy Young is one thing, going unanimous is another. So I don't I don't really know what I was expecting. I don't, you know, know, if I was expecting to win it or not win it, but kind of just got to go in there with no expectations. So you're not you upset or anything. But the unanimous was a nice touch.

00:20:03
Speaker 2: Seems like your girlfriend was more excited for you, Livy kind of you know, smiling and kind of let you know, be happy here.

00:20:12
Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean that that's a nice thing about having her in, you know, in the picture like that and you know, streams and that kind of thing because she can kind of show my emotions for me. So it's worked two years in a row.

00:20:25
Speaker 2: Now, as far as like full time d h you have, you have to look at Otani and is there any part of you that says I could do maybe a portion of that. I could be a hitter and I could be a picture.

00:20:38
Speaker 12: I mean the portion I could do is stand in the box. I couldn't.

00:20:43
Speaker 2: I think humble if I look at what you did when you were in college you could hit.

00:20:49
Speaker 12: Yeah. That was also. I mean the Mountain West is great like the Mountain West, and I mean even the SEC and then obviously big leagues. They're very different things. So I'm good. I'm good with what I'm doing right now. I haven't picked up that in two years.

00:21:06
Speaker 2: Okay, But if your manager says, hey, why don't you go up there and pinshit?

00:21:10
Speaker 12: Oh yeah, I'm I'm strapping it on like leats, batting gloves, elbow guards everything.

00:21:16
Speaker 2: Can you be the backup catcher, like in an emergency situation?

00:21:20
Speaker 5: Could you catch?

00:21:22
Speaker 4: Yeah?

00:21:22
Speaker 12: I really believe that. I mean because we played catch every day with pitchers, so we're used to their stuff and you know, and catching it. It's just they they I don't think they would ever put me back there.

00:21:34
Speaker 2: Give me somebody that you'd like to catch, not on your staff, any pitcher, because catcher was your first position.

00:21:42
Speaker 12: I mean, I roll this chatman. I mean he was on my team my rookie year, and he would do some some cool stuff like, you know, throw a heater ninety one and then throw it one oh four on the next pitch then didn't really know why, and it was like a you know a surprise every pitch for the catcher. That'd be fun.

00:22:00
Speaker 2: What's your highest recorded pitch, your fastest pitch?

00:22:03
Speaker 12: I think one o two?

00:22:05
Speaker 5: Do you care?

00:22:06
Speaker 2: Like, if I'm assessing how you're pitching, does the radar gun matter?

00:22:15
Speaker 12: It does to me in basically like how close I am to my max and the minimum? Like I want the average to be as close to those as possible. So like sitting one hundred for me is better than hitting one o two, but sitting ninety seven, If that makes sense.

00:22:34
Speaker 5: What pitch are you going to add in the off season?

00:22:37
Speaker 12: I have no idea yet. I barely started throwing right now, so we'll see. Once I get on the mound and everything. I might start playing a house and stuff. But no plans for anything yet.

00:22:47
Speaker 2: But you have to have an idea of somebody telling you something or you're seeing something that you know. Can you work that into your arsenal?

00:22:56
Speaker 12: Yeah, I think a lot of it so far has been, you know, like, hey, you should throw your your fastball here instead of here, you should throw it more in instead of away, that kind of thing, rather than like actually designing and engineering new pitches. Just because it's just so early. I don't I'm I'm really just you know, working to get my body back to to you know, in season four right now, and then we can worry about the pitch shapes later.

00:23:23
Speaker 2: Talking to Paul's schemes the unanimous Cy Young Winner, I'm not sure if you got to fly fighter jets when you were in the Air Force? Can you can you even fit in the cockpit as big as you are?

00:23:35
Speaker 5: Yeah?

00:23:35
Speaker 12: I can barely fit. You put the helmet on me and you know, I'm wearing boots and all that, the G suit, it's it's going to be tight. But uh yeah, I went in I went into the Air Force Academy about three inches shorter than I am right now. So my you know, plans changed a little bit as time went on there.

00:23:58
Speaker 2: Well, when you watch Top Gun and do your teammates say, hey, is that what it was like for you in the Air Force?

00:24:04
Speaker 12: Yeah, it's pretty common. I mean they're not they're not playing danger Zone when I walk into the room or anything like that.

00:24:14
Speaker 5: They wouldn't. They wouldn't do that to you, would they ever?

00:24:17
Speaker 12: They would never do that to me.

00:24:19
Speaker 5: Do you want to go back and?

00:24:21
Speaker 2: Uh, like, is there any part of you that is not finished with the Air Force.

00:24:26
Speaker 12: Yeah, it's funny because the more I've been out of there, it's you know, right when you leave, you're so happy to be gone, just because it's so hard and so demanding. And the longer I've been up, you know, away from there and away from those people, it's like, dang, I miss it. So I don't know about I mean, I when I when I did my paperwork to leave, there was like a clause in there that like I could come back and finish my degree as long as I finish it before I'm twenty seven. So I would have to do that in the next couple of years. So in terms of going back and being a cadet, that's that's not going to happen. But they do have a baseball team they need coaches occasionally, so that's something I would be very excited to do. Living in Colorado, spring sounds nice.

00:25:14
Speaker 5: You don't get used to losing, but you lose a lot.

00:25:18
Speaker 2: Where you go from winning a national championship, now you know you're losing one hundred games. How does that affect you or how do you try not to let that affect you?

00:25:28
Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean it's it's tough. It's you know, a huge adjustment because you know, all I've done. The Air Force is the winningest organization in the world, and then I got to LSU and I win a national championship, and then obviously I haven't had two great years team wise in Pittsburgh. So it's been an adjustment. It's you know, it's tough to not show up to the field every day and be better sometimes, especially when it's you know, we're on a seven eight game skid. I think it, you know, I think it just comes down to being a professional. I've learned more and more how to do that and just be the you know, be the same person every day. I'm still learning how to do that. So but yeah, it's I mean, it is energizing to think about what it could be if and if and when we do win. So that's the that's the thing that gets me.

00:26:24
Speaker 4: Out of bed.

00:26:26
Speaker 2: But that's how you get these stories that come out, because you know, can you put up with this with your talent? And that's how that report comes out that if it was a true report or a rumor, But how do you deal with that that anonymous player says that you hope to be traded to the Yankees?

00:26:43
Speaker 4: Yeah.

00:26:43
Speaker 12: I mean I was frustrated for a couple hours and then and then you know, kind of got over it and talked to the media later that night. You know, it is what it is. There's stuff that's going to come out, you know, good and bad. It's you know, obviously it's it's not true. I think the hardest part of leaving air Force for me was, you know, we had just won a conference championship, the first one in the school's history, and you know, it didn't and if we had built that and it felt like there was unfinished you know, work that needed to be done. So that's how it feels right now. We're you know, I won the we won the national championship or the conference championship at air Force. That's that's what is on the horizon for us. We just have to do it. And leaving before that would you know, leave a bad taste in my mouth because there wasn't you know, there was work to be done that.

00:27:42
Speaker 4: We didn't do.

00:27:43
Speaker 2: Yeah, and I think this has happened because there's no salary cap and we look at smaller markets, good place. You know, Garrett Cole when he was with the Pirates, it's like, how long can these smaller market teams keep players.

00:27:55
Speaker 5: So you're just the latest.

00:27:57
Speaker 2: There'll be somebody that comes after you, and you know they'll be doing the same thing.

00:28:03
Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean, I'm not the first person, not the first person. That's that's you know, been through this, done this, and I'm not I'm not the last, you know. It's just it all comes down to how you look at it right, Like you can you can just be bitter at the world and pissed off, or you can you know, fight to to do what's right, make it right, you know, win. Those are kind of the the two paths because you cannot, like the bar only moves one way, it only goes up, and for you know, that's the goal. Basically, it very easily could go down if you let it go down. So you just got to keep fighting to to raise the bar, you know, for us in Pittsburgh, but for the next player wherever wherever that is.

00:28:57
Speaker 2: Do you have to make the bed? Does your girlfriend make you make the bed?

00:29:02
Speaker 12: Still got to make the bed. That's something that you can't really uh, you can't get that out of you once you've I probably made a thousand beds while I was at Air Force and Uh, actually more than that, probably a thousand only in basic training. So it's it's habits that are built inside you.

00:29:21
Speaker 5: But is the bouncing the quarter is that true?

00:29:24
Speaker 4: They don't.

00:29:25
Speaker 12: They don't do that anymore, at least not when I was there. They might, they might have brought that back. It's funny. You'll get people that you know, don't want to make their bed every morning, and so they like duct tape it underneath so that it's all tight like uh, because we got a shirt stays there to make sure your your shirt stays tucked in, and so they'll use those and tie it from one side to the other. So you'll learn those tricks from from being in it a little bit. But anyway, No, I don't I don't think the quarter thing is is true anymore.

00:29:58
Speaker 5: Most famous person you've met.

00:30:04
Speaker 12: Probably right now, I mean Shane Gillis. He's the biggest person in the world.

00:30:10
Speaker 4: I don't know I was.

00:30:11
Speaker 12: It depends, you know, it depends what circle you're talking. Uh you.

00:30:18
Speaker 5: Shane Gillis is a good guy.

00:30:19
Speaker 2: We met him in Dublin and he was doing his stand up over there, and.

00:30:24
Speaker 12: Yeah, he's it's refreshing to talk to him. He's he's down to earth, great dude, obviously, you know, hilarious. Everything he does is you know, must watch TV. So it was it was cool to meet him. Just you know, I'm a I'm a comedy fan. Ah. I was looking forward to meeting him, and I was not disappointed. It was it was pretty cool.

00:30:45
Speaker 5: Then he go to Army, Yeah he did briefly.

00:30:50
Speaker 12: Right, Yeah, he's a see when I got to l s U. The running joke was that I thought about serving for two years. He thought about serving for a little bit shortter than that. But we are both My air Force coach calls me to quitter, so we're both quitter.

00:31:07
Speaker 2: Congrats, enjoy the off season, and thanks again for joining us.

00:31:11
Speaker 12: Yeah, I appreciate it. Thank you for having me.

00:31:13
Speaker 2: Yep, Paul skeins, he is unanimous. Did you see his girlfriend was in the background walking by a couple of times.

00:31:20
Speaker 5: I didn't see that, yep, yep.

00:31:22
Speaker 2: Now I was going to say, hey, why don't you get your girlfriend to come up here and join us, but she was going back and forth a couple of times.

00:31:30
Speaker 5: Y has Tom They no Yankee questions, just going to shout that out in the.

00:31:33
Speaker 2: Matter, all right, We asked the question we got it out there, Yeah, he handled it, okay. Yeah, Paulie, it.

00:31:41
Speaker 7: Really is a tough situation for him as well, Like you'd love to be loyal to the Pirates and build something there, but you're also saying, I may sign up for a career that doesn't get me deep in the postseason. Ever, like Tony Gwinn generations ago, loyalty can It's impressive and it's respectable, but I don't if it's the right move.

00:32:01
Speaker 2: I remember when Kevin Garnett was criticized because he didn't want to leave Minnesota to go win a championship and that he was loyal. Like, I think we got our compasses pointing the wrong direction here, Like we should give credit to somebody who is loyal. Is he going to win a championship in Minnesota?

00:32:21
Speaker 3: No?

00:32:21
Speaker 2: I think they went to the Western Conference finals one year, but then he went to Boston end up, you know, winning a championship.

00:32:28
Speaker 7: Yeah, paul he wins a cy Young by going ten to ten with a one point nine to seven ERA. I did some research on it. If he had the average run support of like the top twenty pitchers in the National League last year, he probably would have been twenty four and five. Yeah, twenty four and five In this day and age, twenty four wins is like like forty.

00:32:52
Speaker 2: All right, when we come back, we have our super Bowl picks. But if I give everybody a mulligan, who would you pick to in the Super Bowl, We'll have that for you. It's called stick or pick. Gotta have every segment has to have a name. Stick with your original pick or pick somebody different. Take a break back after this.

00:33:27
Speaker 2: No Victor Wimbenyama, no Ja Morant, Spurs and the Grizzlies in Ain't Eastern on NBC in Peacock. No problem for Reggie Miller, who joins this on the program.

00:33:40
Speaker 5: All right, how are you.

00:33:41
Speaker 2: Gonna dress this game up without Wemby and Ja Moran tonight?

00:33:47
Speaker 4: I think a lot of Zach Edy this second game back. Jared Jackson last year's defense the player of the year from Memphis, and I think first at Antoniodaron Fox, I think he was the clutch player of the year. A couple of years. Look, we're gonna roll everything and see what sticks.

00:34:12
Speaker 2: See, this is what I worry about with Wembin Yama. You know, your big man always has you know, could be feet and knees. You had the blood clot, now you have it's a calf strain. I understand it. But I mean that's the only thing.

00:34:27
Speaker 5: Injury is the.

00:34:27
Speaker 2: Only thing that's going to prevent him from being one of the all time greats in my opinion. But is usage like can you prevent these things with a big man?

00:34:39
Speaker 4: No? I mean, look at John Moran, He's what barely six feet and he has the same issue that Wimby has, you know, a calf strain, the calf issues, And I think, uh, just looking at the history over the last year, year and a half with Damian Lillard, Tyrese Halliburton, Jason Tatum, I think any type of calf related issue, tightness, soreness, stiffness, you will see NBA players played on the on the cautious side. And you know, I think most training staffs now are saying, hey, do you want to miss two weeks or potentially miss twelve months? And I think all these players are going to side on the on the air on the side of caution here with these calf issues. But I mean, if you can go down the list of John Moran's issues over the last two years, and with Wimby, I mean, these are two guys that really are so unique at their position, and with John some of the electrifying moves, but he does hit the floor a lot. And we kind of highlighted this with Dwayne Wade back in the day. What was that commercial hit the floor, get up six times at the floor sometimes or whatever that commercial was. I mean, these guys do such electrifying things on the court, and Wimby's I mean, we've never seen that that spin move that he did against Draymond Green, that out of ballace play, I don't think I've ever seen that before. And so you're gonna have these things crop up. It's just part of the nature. You just hope it's not a lingering thing, because CAF issues can't linger a little bit, and you hope this is not a reoccurring injury.

00:36:37
Speaker 2: It looked AI when Steph Curry hits that three pointer over Victor run Banyama. I don't even know, how do you practice something like that of shooting over somebody who their wingspan is probably you know, close to ten feet and Steph with a fade away three. Used to be when teams would play Luel Sindor in college, they'd have somebody stand on a chair and hold a broom, just to give you an idea of what it was like. I don't know how you can simulate playing against somebody like that and shooting jumpers over them.

00:37:13
Speaker 5: You can't.

00:37:14
Speaker 4: And I think in Steph's case, I think he reverts back to muscle memory because he's not entirely focused on Wimby. I think he's more my shoulders a line, am I straight distance. Yeah, he sees the defender in front of him and oh my god, it's you know, a twelve foot alien. But I think you revert it. Excuse me. Back to the Olympics. I think he made a shot like that to win gold medal for US over Wimby. So there is a history there between those two on those switches, on those high screening rolls, and so far Steph is two for two in those big time moments versus Wimby. But yeah, you're shooting over over a statue, and I think he reverts back to his muscle memory.

00:38:11
Speaker 2: We saw the Jamar Chase situation with Jalen Ramsey spitting in his face.

00:38:16
Speaker 5: Does that happen in the NBA?

00:38:19
Speaker 4: Look as much trash talk as in face to face. I'm not saying he didn't do it on purpose, but in the heat of moment, Yeah, I mean it happens. Look, there's no excuse for that. And if it was a purpose spit on Jamar case, he's lucky you only got one game because it's just there's no call for it. You can't do that in any sport.

00:38:48
Speaker 5: But yeah, it happens in the NBA.

00:38:50
Speaker 4: I don't know about necessarily purposely spitting on someone, but when you are nose to nose and you're talking trash, things fly out. It flies out. So I don't know if you're purposely doing that, but yeah, things happen.

00:39:09
Speaker 2: Somebody accidentally, maybe with their lisp they spit in your face or something, or they have braces and vis a line or something comes out.

00:39:18
Speaker 4: People trying to talk through their mouthpieces, those are a little bit uncomfortable and spid comes out. Yes, LOOKI comes out.

00:39:28
Speaker 2: I was worried. Draymond Green talking to a fan. Okay, nothing happened. But why is Draymond Green getting chippy with a Pelicans fan.

00:39:40
Speaker 4: First of all, I'm gonna give as much as I love Draymond Green, I do love them, that was some elite trolling by that fan, no cursing. He did his homework and if you look at the stat line, all he was doing was referring to dream as injuries. All he was saying was the numbers and you're not scoring, but you are racking.

00:40:06
Speaker 5: Up the rebound.

00:40:08
Speaker 4: That's kind of funny. So I don't understand the sensitivity side of Draymond. That's something he would do because he's an elite troll himself. I kind of give the fans. I'm taking the fans point of view because there was he didn't cross the line my point.

00:40:30
Speaker 2: I know, you would think that Draymond Green would have a sense of humor with something like that.

00:40:35
Speaker 4: He should have had a sense of humor on this one, because that's it's kind of funny.

00:40:40
Speaker 2: If I could give you Ja Moran's future or Zion Williams's future, Oh.

00:40:46
Speaker 4: And I gotta pick one of these guys. Both are injury prone. I don't know what you do going forward with both of these guys.

00:40:57
Speaker 2: Can you build around either one of them?

00:40:59
Speaker 4: No, in my opinion, you can't because I don't know the availability of both. Certainly in Zion's case, I can't trust if I'm a general manager, if I'm a I don't know if I can trust these two. As electrifying as both are, both put people in the seats, and they are a higher light reel in the making, but they're also one play away from being out three to four weeks or even the season. I cannot trust that. But having said all that, if I can get them to April May and possibly June, I like my chancers too.

00:41:44
Speaker 2: Steph Curry is a free agent, a shoe free agent. Here looks like the Jordan brand is gonna scoop him up purely. Did you ever wear a bad shoe, like a shoe that was uncomfortable but you had an endorsement deal.

00:42:02
Speaker 4: No. When I first came into the league, do you remember the shoe Spot Built? Yeah. I was with Spot Builts my first two years and they were one of the most comfortable shoes. And then I jumped over to Nike and I was with Nike the rest of my career. Especially for basketball players, if you're wearing an uncomfortable shoe, you're going to have foot problems for the rest of your career. So it doesn't matter the model or the name brand. You've got to make sure your jimmies are comfortable because if not, you're gonna have ankle injuries. Planet or fasciai Idis, which I was with Nike most of my career, and I have Planner Fascia Idis. So it doesn't matter if you're Adidas, Nike, Puma, or whatever. You've got to find comfortable shoes. And it doesn't matter because Planet Fasciatus, are you rolling your ankle? It doesn't matter the brand, it's going to happen.

00:42:58
Speaker 2: Could you have worn Air Jordan if you wanted to?

00:43:01
Speaker 4: I did later in my career, my last two or three years. I wasn't technically a Jordan athlete because him Jay never endorsed me technically. A lot of times I was wearing them, especially when he was at his height. I wore Jordan's just to piss him off. Because no one was supposed to be wearing Jordan brands other than Michael Jordan or his teammates like Ron Harper or Pimp at times, so other players weren't supposed to technically wear Jordan's, but I would wear them just so he only when I played him, just to tick them off.

00:43:44
Speaker 5: Wait, the only time you wore air Jordan's was when you well, I mean I wore.

00:43:48
Speaker 4: Him at other games after, like once he went to the Wizards. That's when I was more of a Jordan brand type player. But when he was with the Bulls, you weren't supposed to really wear them, but I did occasionally wear them just to rub him a little bit the wrong way.

00:44:05
Speaker 2: We're talking to Reggie Miller and be on the call tonight Jamal Crawford and Noah Eagle. Yes, so it's Spurs gridgly with.

00:44:16
Speaker 4: No Victor Winbin Yama and no Ja mort But we are going to work this game. Baby.

00:44:24
Speaker 5: Give me the feel good story so far this season?

00:44:30
Speaker 4: How about I believe it's ten in a row now for the Detroit Pistons leading the Central Division and just reading everything listening to the postseason comments, they were embarrassed and highly upset in that New York Knicks series last year. They felt that they left two or three games on the table, and I wanted to see how they would respond. How would that summer, go are you and use that as motivating fuel and come back bigger, stronger, faster. They got off to a slow start, and now they've reeled off ten straight. Very good, feel good story. I think the whole Luca questioning his character, his fitness, He goes over to your old basket. He plays great, he gets in shape. No Lebron James to start the season, and the Lakers are what nine, four, ten and four. That's a feel good story. Now you've got arguably the best player of his generation coming back within the next week or two. I can't believe you know all eyes are always on the Lakers, but they are. They're somewhat of a feel good story. Luca's out for a little bit. Austin Reeves is like Jerry West and Pete Meravich all wrapped into one for a few games. That's a feel good story.

00:45:57
Speaker 2: But I wonder when Lebron comes back mm hm. In areas of the tail end of his career, it's Lucas team, Austin Reeves, DeAndre eight and it feels like there's been a little bit of a rhythm. Now Lebron comes back. Is it up to Lebron to react to the current team or the current team to react to Lebron coming back.

00:46:19
Speaker 4: I believe it's up to Lebron, and you don't play in this league for twenty two plus years like Lebron has done and not be able to adapt. And he's been over on the sideline since the beginning of the season. He understands what they need and when to interject, and you know, be Lebron, but he also knows when he doesn't have the same skill set, even though at his age he was a second team All NBA player just a year ago. I think he will fit in where he needs to, and I think it's up to him to fit in as opposed to these guys changing their games. But I mean, think about that, you're getting an All NBA player back if you're JJ Reddick the Lakers. I like where this is headed.

00:47:13
Speaker 2: I had a caller I don't know if it was yesterday or the day before, and say, is Steph Curry a top ten player of all time? And we've discussed this. It feels like we put fifteen players into the top ten. Whenever we have these lists. We don't take players out because we know Lebron is going in. Is kd and Steph going into the top ten all time modern basketball in your opinion, and you.

00:47:46
Speaker 4: Can make a case for both of them because they're both outliers and they both have changed the game. Obviously, Steph in his shooting, we have never seen it that before on this stage, just like we never saw a guy walk on air like Air Jordan. We never saw a six or nine point guard like Magic Johnson. On KT's point, I mean he's seven foot even though he won't claim that, and to be able to shoot and score are the top ten? I would probably put Steph in the top ten before KD.

00:48:25
Speaker 5: But who do you take out of your top ten?

00:48:27
Speaker 4: Man? I mean, that's difficult, That's it's difficult. I mean we'd have to go over the ten first.

00:48:37
Speaker 2: Okay, are we going to include Wilt and Bill Russell? And if that's the case, then are you including Oscar and Jerry West?

00:48:49
Speaker 4: Like I don't know, if I don't know, I don't know if those four would be in my top ten. Certainly Bill's the obviously the winningness. But we're talking about in terms of talent, and this is a longer discussion. Let's get to this next week.

00:49:11
Speaker 5: But do you think Steph is okay.

00:49:14
Speaker 2: You're gonna have Joker, You're gonna have Giannis, You're gonna have Luca, you got Steph, you got KD.

00:49:21
Speaker 4: Jeff Modern Day. You mean, are we gonna have all these guys in the top ten.

00:49:25
Speaker 2: I think they'll be a make There'll be a case for Joker in the top ten. They'll be a case for Luca in the top ten, Steph in the top ten, KD in the top ten?

00:49:36
Speaker 4: I mean, so, are you taking out Magic? Are you taking out Larry Bird? Are you taking out Kareem? I mean, I can't take those players out. You're not taking out Eric Jordan. So I just named five right there? Are you talking Hakeem Elijah? Now you're talking about is Hakeem on his way out? I mean that's hard.

00:49:56
Speaker 5: To do, I know, but I got Are you taking out? No?

00:50:01
Speaker 4: I can't take out.

00:50:02
Speaker 5: Are you taking out Kobe?

00:50:05
Speaker 4: Are you taking out Tim Duncan?

00:50:06
Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I would put Steph in over Tim Duncan.

00:50:17
Speaker 4: I cannot do that. I cannot. I will say this, I cannot take out someone who is the best at their position over Stephan Curry, who's.

00:50:30
Speaker 5: The naiter shooter of all time?

00:50:33
Speaker 4: What position is the greatest power forward of all time.

00:50:37
Speaker 5: Steph Curry changed basketball.

00:50:39
Speaker 4: I agree. I said that, Wow, five chips versus four chips because you got to count those two. How many MVPs for Tim Duncan two or three?

00:50:53
Speaker 5: Two and two for Curry back to back?

00:50:58
Speaker 4: Two?

00:51:00
Speaker 5: Yeah?

00:51:00
Speaker 2: Would you take Kad over Tim Duncan?

00:51:05
Speaker 4: No?

00:51:06
Speaker 2: Okay, no, would you take Joker.

00:51:11
Speaker 4: Over Tim Duncan?

00:51:14
Speaker 12: Uh?

00:51:14
Speaker 4: The only thing missing from the Joker is another championship. Once he gets the two championships, then we can have this discussion right now. No, okay, yeah, he has the MVPs and he'll have the stats. The only thing missing from the Joker's resumes are.

00:51:30
Speaker 5: Chips because I have to put burden magic together. Yeah, okay, they take one one? Yes, okay?

00:51:37
Speaker 4: Yeah, hey good that helps me out there. Good.

00:51:40
Speaker 2: Yeah, It's it's tough to break into that top ten with it just feels like there's guys.

00:51:48
Speaker 4: So according So is a chem Elijah one out for you.

00:51:53
Speaker 5: Over Steph Curry?

00:51:56
Speaker 4: Yes?

00:51:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, and it.

00:51:59
Speaker 2: Came is one of my favorite players of all mine too, mine too.

00:52:03
Speaker 4: Wow.

00:52:03
Speaker 5: But I got to be objective with this.

00:52:06
Speaker 2: It's tough to say that, like Carl Malone, I'm taking Carl Malone out.

00:52:10
Speaker 4: It wouldn't be in my top ten. Okay, all right, he wouldn't be in my top ten.

00:52:14
Speaker 5: Okay, would you say? What about Bill?

00:52:18
Speaker 4: Is Bill Russell? See Bill Russell wouldn't probably be in my top ten or Will. I don't know if Will would be in my top ten. Shaq would be at my top ten.

00:52:25
Speaker 5: Okay. We'd have to go modern erab.

00:52:29
Speaker 4: So seventies and up.

00:52:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, it'd be like seventy five to now because but then you've got to decide with Oscar and Jerry West and they may not make that list either.

00:52:40
Speaker 4: It wouldn't be in my top ten.

00:52:42
Speaker 5: All right until the next time.

00:52:44
Speaker 2: Right, I'll give you plenty plenty of time to do some homework here. Rench will be on the Call to Night with Noah Eagle and Jamal Crawford. It's the Spurs and the Grizzlies and eight Eastern on NBC.

00:52:59
Speaker 5: Thank you, they.

00:53:01
Speaker 4: Don't love you. And of course my dad hat's always on fire, always
