“We’ve just got to be better”: Phillies swept in New York

The Phillies Show

It’s still early, but the Phillies can’t play like this forever.

They need to get going. The Mets swept the Phillies this week at Citi Field. The Phils have lost 10 of their last 16 games. There are plenty of reasons why. The bullpen continues to struggle. There are cracks in the rotation with Aaron Nola 0-5 and Cristopher Sánchez’s left forearm hurting. The offense had just three extra-base hits in the entire series. We drill down on everything that is going wrong for the Phillies right now.

Speaker 1: How's it going. This is Jason Kelce and welcome to The Philly Show.

00:00:08
Speaker 2: Hi, everybody, Ruben Omorrow, Junior, Jim Salisbury, Todd's a lucky It's the Philly Show. It's Thursday, April twenty fourth, twenty twenty five. Gentlemen, I got back from New York last night, and oh the trip. What a trip it was. Although I will say real quick, I want to tell a quick story. So I take the Long Island Railroad, just get swept.

00:00:29
Speaker 3: Of course they lose three.

00:00:30
Speaker 2: Get on Long Island Railroad to Penn Station to catch my train home. I come up the stairs and this gentleman, I don't know where he was from. He goes, excuse me, is this New York? And we're in Penn Station and I go, yes, this is New York. And he goes, this is New York. I'm like yes, and he goes, new York, New York. Oh my mi, yeah, I'm like yes, and then immediately grab my I immediately grab.

00:00:59
Speaker 3: My wallet because I was like, yeah's hocky to hear?

00:01:04
Speaker 2: Is this like an end a round? But made it home safely. The Phillies flew to Chicago last night. Thrilled, probably to leave New.

00:01:12
Speaker 3: York behind and not a good series.

00:01:15
Speaker 4: You know.

00:01:16
Speaker 2: Let's say, Aaron Nola on Monday falls to zero to five, Christopher Sanchez on Tuesday leaves the game after the second inning with a soreness in his left forearm, which is connected to the elbow. Jordan Romano then on Wednesday's series finale blows a lead and the Mets walk it off to sweep the series. So a lot of other things happen in this series as well, And we're going to get to the We're gonna dig in a little bit today on the bullpen, some of the stuff that's going on.

00:01:49
Speaker 3: In the rotation, some of the stuff that's going on with the offense.

00:01:53
Speaker 2: But you know, when you guys look back at that series, does anything kind of pop off right off the top of the bat with you guys?

00:02:00
Speaker 1: Interesting word, top of the bat? Where were the extra base hits? I mean, this is the three hundred million dollar payroll, you know, and with in the lineup, you got one hundred million dollar guys, you got three hundred million dollar guys. You get eighty million dollar guys, and they go to New York Big Ballpark and they get three extra base hits you know, put in the gaps, get some extra base hits. I mean, that was astounding that they could come out of there with with just three extra base hits.

00:02:31
Speaker 5: You know, I just yeah, what's amazing to me is, you know, not everybody's going to be hot at the same time, but you also don't really have situations typically where everybody goes.

00:02:43
Speaker 4: Cold at the same time and the only guy who's really swinging the bat the kind of consistency of getting hits is Alec Bohm. Imagine that, and I mean, I think all of us knew that that was going to happen. At some point. He's not really driving the ball, but he's getting hits. The other guy's getting hits, the other the number nine hole hitter, I mean, yeah, you got Johann Ross is getting hits. I mean, when you're depending on the eight to nine hole hitter to get hits and you're not the big boys, aren't you know, doing the damage, then it makes it very difficult for you to have success. It's as simple as that.

00:03:18
Speaker 6: Rojas is really every one of those games were winnable. Every single one of those games were winnable. And you know, you want to talk about the bullpen. You want to talk about starting pitching, you want to talk about Aaron Nola.

00:03:29
Speaker 4: They're all winnable. You got to score runs to win baseball games, and they're not. And you're right, three hundred million dollars you know, payroll. Uh, you know the two three four hitters, two three four five hitters are making like a hundred million dollars themselves.

00:03:44
Speaker 1: So and and and I don't want to always equate it to money. My point is, these are guys with track record, These are guys with pedigree, These are guys who've been All Stars. These are guys who have you know, made those paid checks by driving the ball all over the lot and then we just haven't seen it. But hats off the Rojas. He's really swung it well since I sent him to Triple A last week.

00:04:11
Speaker 3: You must listen to the pod. You fired him up, Jimmy.

00:04:15
Speaker 7: Well, I sort of had to. I mean he had to sort of step up. He's an opportunities now a marsh.

00:04:19
Speaker 1: Down, Yeah he has. He has.

00:04:24
Speaker 4: Weston Wilson now is activated.

00:04:26
Speaker 7: Maybe he plays some center field at some point if the Rojas wasn't swinging the bat well. But you know, again, these are guys that are at some point are going to start swinging the bat.

00:04:37
Speaker 4: Well against Schwarberg got really cold. He was really hot early. He's gotten really cold. Harper's not swinging the bat all that well. I mean, there's all types of stuff that's going on right now that that you know, just just isn't gonna work. And I think this is a team that's good at hit and good at driving, and they're gonna slug. I remember Rob Thomson talking about last year we will slug, and they will, but they're not doing it right now.

00:05:04
Speaker 3: He said that again yesterday. He was asked that again yesterday.

00:05:07
Speaker 2: He says, we will slug, and there will come a time later this season when we do not slug, and there might come another time later, even later in the season when we do not slug. But he does believe that they are going to slug at some point, just a matter of when, hopefully sooner rather than later for them.

00:05:25
Speaker 1: I would like to make the point that I didn't send a Rojas to Triple A as a punitive measure. It was more like a player development measure. But he has leaned on some fastballs and I even saw him hit a breaking ball up the middle for a base hit, So good for him. Another thing that was said by Rob Thompson and others in that clubhouse in New York on Wednesday was we're a good team. I heard that several times. We're a good team. Okay, it's time to start showing it. If you are a good team team by definition, they are actually a mediocre team. And here's why. If you look at the numbers since last June nine, one hundred and twenty seven games for the Phillies since last June nine, that includes four in the postseason, they are one game over five hundred, one game over five hundred the Mets. The Mets, who are a good team, same period of time, thirty seven games over five hundred.

00:06:37
Speaker 4: So great point. You make great points, Yeah, no question about it.

00:06:41
Speaker 1: What are the Phillies? The Phillies they are a definition that's a large chunk of season. It's like seven.

00:06:47
Speaker 4: They're super they're super talented team. And I don't think that they're playing as well as as you know, as they probably should, and they haven't done that for some time. I don't know. I don't like to use necessarily the word underachieving, but they are certainly not producing at the level commensurate to their talent. I think that that's probably the way that I would describe it. I know that these guys have a tremendous amount of baseball ability, but they're going to have to start playing with that sort of baseball ability to show themselves, show the world, to show their fan base that they are a good team.

00:07:33
Speaker 2: There's a lot of upset fans, of course. I mean I've seen it. I've seen it. I've heard it, lots of.

00:07:40
Speaker 3: Being said about this team.

00:07:42
Speaker 2: And so where do you guys kind of fall on it? Fall on the you know, it's twenty five games in the season. Because here's kind of where I fall on it. It is only twenty five games in the season. They are thirteen and twelve. They still have a winning record. Not good enough, Not good enough. That's not what I'm saying. Uh, you know, I I see a lot of reasons to be concerned. Jim, you mentioned it. Their play since early June of last season. You look at that number, you go, oh boy, that's you know, maybe there's something there. Uh, you know, the bullpen issues, the offensive issues. But I'm not ready to make any decorative sentences. I've heard a lot of that so far. You know, you know it's over. They're they're cooked, you know there. They can't come back and turn this thing around. It's way way premature for that. Where do you guys think, Where do you guys stand on some of I guess some of the heart takes, Yeah, the heart the hot takes going on right now and in Philly's land, because there's a lot of them.

00:08:46
Speaker 1: Well, they're they're, they're they're one good week away from turning those hot takes and turning those frowns upside down. But you know, I think a smart fan, though, can can look through all that and have concerned about the bullpen. I think a smart fan can look at the rotation and have concerns about that is the strength of the team. And Aaron Nola has lost a tick on his fastball. I think it's totally justified to ask if he can get that back otherwise he's going to have to pitch a lot more like Jamie Moore, and I think it's completely justifiable to be concerned about the bullpen and say, you know, they need to maybe expedite on that July trade deadline and make a move sooner rather than later, because there's a lot of contenders out there. I'll be looking for the same thing. It's way too early to count this team out. It's too early to say that Jordan Romano can't get things going and be a good pickup and a good acquisition. But I'll tell you right now, Rubin, I think this was before you started covering the Phillies Todd. But when I look get Jordan Romano, I see Andy Ashby. Remember Andy Ashby had that he came back here, he didn't pitch well, and he had that deer in the headlights, looked like, what the hell is going on here? I see that with Jordan Romano a little bit, and it kind of concerns me.

00:10:18
Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, obviously Jordan Romano's have been struggling. He actually it's kind of crazy. He made a decent pitch on Pete Alonso. He had pretty good stuff. He brushed the fastball past Bianto's at some point he he you know, so he's got some more life on the stuff. The breaking stuff's a little sharper, and I think that he cleaned up whatever those tip pitches he was he had going on. But he makes a pretty darn good pitch that's an O two pitch that needs to be bounced and uh and he didn't bounce it. He didn't get it down enough. And you got to give Pete a Lonzo some credit. Man a little bit like what he did with Devin Williams last year in the playoffs. I mean, he came up with a really big bass at the oppoe the way and he's got to execute better. That was just one instance. But I think as far as the team is concerned, it's a better team than we've seen and especially as of late. But I get concerned about their ability to get a big hit with men in scoring position. I'm not sure what is happening with their mojo. I'm not sure why it's happening, but it has been a long period of time where they have not come up with a three run double or a two run double or a four to three run home run other than stop hitting that big one against their closer. I don't see that happening consistently and guys coming through and having the abassador necessary to drive runs in. The Mets did it the Phillies did not. The two out doubles, the two out base hits, the big when they have chances to do some damage situationally that is not getting done that has There's gotta be some kind of paradigm shift in that area of the game, because if they don't get the big two run doubles or the two run home runs or the three run home runs, they're not going to score runs because they're not manufacturing them often enough.

00:12:23
Speaker 2: Let's get more into the offense and the bullpen right after these words.

00:12:27
Speaker 8: Alana, we love our pupps dearly, and we want to shout out Spot and Tango for taking care of our pupps with their unkibble.

00:12:35
Speaker 3: They are a game changer.

00:12:37
Speaker 9: A game changer is right, Scott. And you know anything about me, You know that I love dogs and I want them to live forever. My own rescue pup, Bentley, is my passion and she loves Spot and Tango. Thank goodness. It's one hundred percent human great ingredients, so you know exactly what your dog is getting. Oftentimes, in other forms of dog food, you have no idea what's in it. It's a bunch of fillers. She loves it. It helps keep her healthy. It's perfectly customized for her age, her breed, her weight, and her level of activity. Makes me happy to give it to her.

00:13:06
Speaker 8: Hey, and you can upgrade your pets bowl with spot Entango on kibble for a limited time. Go to spotan tango dot com slash foul. Use code foul to get fifty five oh percent off your first order. That is, spotan tango dot com slash foul, code foul to get fifty percent off your first order. One more time for the pups out there. Code foul at spotantango dot com slash foul.

00:13:28
Speaker 3: We are back. So the bullpen guys, I'm going to run over some numbers here.

00:13:33
Speaker 2: Bullpen right now five point five six ERA, second to last in baseball.

00:13:38
Speaker 3: Only the Nationals are worse. They have a six nine six ERA.

00:13:42
Speaker 2: The Nationals so Phillies twenty ninth in baseball and bullpen e Array Mets bullpen two point three five. It's like the second best in baseball. So it kind of gives you a sense of where they are. And it's really you have Alvarado right now, who's been great, had two scoreless innings yesterday.

00:13:59
Speaker 3: It was a shame to wait. Strom has pitched well.

00:14:03
Speaker 2: And then you have Romano, Banks, Rkering, Ruiz, Ross Fernandez. All those guys except Tanner Banks have an ERA of five six' eight or. Higher and we talked With Dave dombrowski, yesterday a few of us in the dugout visitors dugout At City, field AND i, said you, listen you're always prepared for what you're going to do. Next if they don't do, well you're not just going to keep going out there bullpen after bullpen. Appearance it's something we weigh on a daily, basis he mentioned, yesterday and it already has started that their number twelve, prospects Set johnson has been moved from the rotation to the bullpen In TRIPLE a because they don't really have a lot of internal options right, now guys that they can just pull off the forty man roster and bring up and pitch in the. Bullpen so they're going to Give Seth johnson a. Look they like his fastball slider, combo so they think there could be something, there very very early on. That he had an inch comment yesterday when he was asked about letting Both Jeff hoffman And CARLOS.

00:15:05
Speaker 3: A steves. GO i don't know if you guys saw.

00:15:06
Speaker 2: That he basically said, that you, know we were very aggressive in trying to re Sign Jeff. Hoffman he said the contract That Jeff hoffman ended up taking with The Blue jays three years thirty three, million was not too far off from what The phillies originally offered early in the off. Season so my sense was that they made according To, dave that they made an aggressive offer To jeff early in the off. Season it was a little, light as usually is in the early in the, offseason right you think you're going to get something a five year deal or a four year deal at a higher.

00:15:39
Speaker 3: Aav jeff and his agent said. No offseason.

00:15:44
Speaker 2: Continued he ended up taking three years thirty three so he you, Know dave mentioned that, yesterday WHICH i thought was. Ending doesn't change, anything doesn't change. Anything they still the guys that they did do have on the team right now are not. Performing so wanted to mention those. Things and ALSO i wanted to mention this as, well because this keeps coming. Up Ranger Suarez he's going to make a rehab. Start On, Sunday dave, said we're having no conversations about Moving Ranger swars to the, Bullpen SO i wanted to mention that because that gets asked a.

00:16:16
Speaker 3: LOT i also.

00:16:17
Speaker 2: Asked him a couple two sundays ago In Saint Louis Andrew painter bullpen. Guy he, said absolutely, not under no conditions Will Andrew painter be going to the.

00:16:27
Speaker 1: Bullpen people still keep talking about it though it's a.

00:16:30
Speaker 3: Starter he is a, starter and he is not. Going he, said absolutely.

00:16:34
Speaker 1: Not and coming Off Tommy, john you cannot ask him to get ready in seven minutes at like like the reliever has to get ready in six. Minutes you can't ask you guy coming Off Tommy john at that, age with that future to do. That he needs he needs an hour to get, ready.

00:16:54
Speaker 4: Right so there was a lot of talk about. THAT i, Mean i've talked about that on other, platforms about what the. GUY i, mean, listen this rotation's gonna need more than five or six or eight or ten starters at some. Point, Nola's Nola, wheeler all those, guys they're gonna go. Down they're gonna need. Time it's it's. Inevitable What, look what happened With, SANCHEZ i, mean didn't feel.

00:17:15
Speaker 1: Well that's a big. Concern, sanchez to me is a big. Concern he's got a, forearm and until we see him looking Like, sanchez color me.

00:17:24
Speaker 4: Concerned, yeah, Absolutely and so you have to keep those. Guys you have to create the depth in the rotation is way more important than the depth in your. BULLPEN i will say this, though that there's nothing more demoralizing to a team when you're standing out there knowing that when the ball is handed off from the starter to the reliever that the game may be. Over that is a very very difficult thing to overcome as a player position. Player i've lived. It i've seen, it like you, know when when firepower is coming out of that out of that bullpen and the guys are you, know lighting guys up, there it's very demoralizing to a team and it's a tough thing to address early in the season like. This as you, Said, todd but you, know IF i was in that situation as A gm right, NOW i would be scouring. Hard AND i guarantee you right now That Dave dombrowski.

00:18:20
Speaker 7: Is out there looking for help because he's seeing exactly what we're.

00:18:24
Speaker 4: Seeing AND i, know but it's really really tough because now you've got to give up a really damn good prospect for someone that you are hoping will help solidify the. Team so, yes you have to have some patience because The kirkerings of the, world and you, know some of the other guys that you're sort of counting on in the back.

00:18:48
Speaker 7: End of that, thing have to get. Better romano And kirkering have to get. Better and if they don't get, better then they're in. TROUBLE i think that they.

00:19:00
Speaker 4: WILL i think they have the ability to do, that but they got to get their mojo. Back it's a little bit, like hey, Man i've been. There it's like having a slump you as a. Hitter sometimes you don't see the ball. Well sometimes the ball doesn't come out of the hand the right. Way your mechanics are screwed. Up you don't have the, mentality Like jim said that you have the. Confidence why Is Jose alvarado having so much success because he's confident on the? Mount why didn't have it last? Year he wasn't confident on the. Mount now he's confident now he's. Pitching, well they need to turn that around and get a mental paradigm shift with some of those guys In kirkering And romano in, particular because if they don't get that out of those, guys they're gonna be in.

00:19:40
Speaker 3: Trouble SO i want to ask you guys.

00:19:42
Speaker 2: This On monday, Night Aaron nola gives up the two leadoff home runs first, inning, second and the next next four innings were. SCORELESS i think he at eighty nine. Pitches he finishes the sixth, inning six, innings two runs. Allowed As Charlie manuel, said you'd like to, say because he you, know we were wondering if he's going to go back out. There you, know it took him out in the good part of the, game you, know to give him some confidence him leave on a positive. Note he goes out out there to start the. Seven then we were kind of talking about in the press box and this was my. Theory and now you feel free to disagree with me in terms of why would you send him back out there when he's got six innings tour in runs quality. Start he can go back to the team hotel feel really good about. Himself and my theory was they're down to, nothing they still have a chance to win the. Game he's thrown pretty well for four innings and who you're not going to put in your plus guys in that, Situation you're not going to Pitch, kirkering AND i know he. Struggled you're not going to Pitch. ROMANO i know he, struggled but he's, TECHNICALLY i guess maybe a plus. Guy you're definitely not Pitching alvarado Or. Stromp so now you're Going Jose, Ruiz Carlos, Hernandez Tanner. BANKS i Think Rob thompson in that moment's, going we've got to Push Aaron nola because he's going to give us the best chance to keep this game to.

00:21:01
Speaker 3: Nothing and that's my opinion and why he.

00:21:05
Speaker 2: Did, Now rob after the game was asked that and he, said our bullpen was a little. SHORT i think if If ruiz was thrown, better or maybe Even romano maybe or somebody else was throwing, better maybe they Pull nola out of there and then they take the two nothing lead with the. Bullpen but that was my theory in terms of the overall bullpen struggles kind of affecting some of the other moves that they.

00:21:26
Speaker 10: MAKE i agree with, you no question about.

00:21:31
Speaker 4: It and when he says it's a little, short he doesn't necessarily just mean a little short as far as no. Availability they're a little short because take him pitching. Poorly, YEAH i don't know that he actually meant, that but that's WHAT i thought in my. Head there is absolutely NO i Know Rob, THOMPSON i know how he. MANAGES i know That Aaron nolall probably needed like that good, start be able to come out of there and SAY i feel good about. It he doesn't necessarily need it because He's Aaron. Nola he doesn't that a lot of things don't affect. Him BUT i know that for him, personally it would have been great for him to get out of there if they had a better. Bullpen he's out of the, game, done, period end of, story no question in my, mind and.

00:22:16
Speaker 1: Especially with the way they look at the third time through.

00:22:19
Speaker 4: Thing yeah, no, no you have no question about. It but they try to push, him AND i mean the bullpen not only has it been, terrible but it's been terrible with inherited, runners like get somebody. Out you got to get somebody, out, GUYS i, mean and and and again that's really really. Demoralizing when you know someone's coming out of there and they're not pitching, well and they know and you know they're going to give it, up it's it makes it very difficult on the manager and it makes it very difficult on the players as, well when you don't have the confidence that the game will be able to be stopped.

00:22:50
Speaker 1: Somehow nola in that, game you, know he gave up the two home runs as. Well he, did he did get it. Together he was really good with the breaking ball and the change up are, down down and. DOWN i just worry if you, know he's got to be really really he's got to be really precise unless he gets another tick of two on that. Fastball uh and that sinker and they got to score some runs for.

00:23:17
Speaker 4: HIM i, mean he has no run, support. Dude THEY i mean they cannot score runs with the with the. GUY i, mean he's got through The Cole amills. Thing you got to, throw you, know one hit shutout every single.

00:23:27
Speaker 10: Time and that's and that's a tough way to pitch because he doesn't have one hit shutout stuff right now and he's trying to manage through.

00:23:35
Speaker 3: It he does. Not and So nola's own. Five you, know it's it's like the fourth time Of.

00:23:41
Speaker 2: Phillies pitcher's gone to five and his first five starts the last fifty three, years you, Know Alec asher did in twenty, Fifteen David buchanan did it in twenty, fifteen and it was Like Kyle abbott in nineteen ninety nine started owning. Five it's just crazy to me to See Aaron nola's name in that group.

00:23:57
Speaker 3: Because of how good he's been over the course of his. Career, uh you, know what's your level of concern with With nola right?

00:24:06
Speaker 4: Now do you?

00:24:07
Speaker 2: Think is you know the fastball is going to COME i, Mean Dave Rob thompson is the way he says it's going to come.

00:24:16
Speaker 3: Back i'm not.

00:24:16
Speaker 2: Worried he it sounds like he really means it that it's going to come, back and he's not. Worried Now Aaron nola he, SAID i hope it comes, back and so that you, know take that for what it's. WORTH i don't know that's he coet to just use those, words but you know it's, like, OH I i hope the velocity comes back at some, point but he needs to get that tick or two.

00:24:38
Speaker 4: Up i'm.

00:24:38
Speaker 1: Concerned i'm not going to put a level on. It i'm just flat out concern because of the amount of innings he has. Pitched he's been extremely durable and you, know remains. Durable he takes the. Ball he doesn't, misstarts but you can only generate fastball for so long before you feel a little drop, off and then it becomes time to. Adjust and we'll see if he, can you, know make the adjustments. NEEDED i hope he gets that tick or two. BACK i have great respect for the competitor and the, man AND i think it's too early to say it. Won't but it's certainly not too early to Say i'm. Concerned And i'm concerned about the rotation with him and With, sanchez because that's the pillar of this. Team if that pillar starts, crumbling you in.

00:25:37
Speaker 2: Trouble So sanchez apparently was wanted to try to play catch On wednesday At City. Field they, said, no let's wait a couple of. Days he's going to play catch On friday At Wrigley. Field Dave dombrowski, again we talked to him yesterday in the.

00:25:52
Speaker 3: Dugout he did not seem. Concerned he said that somebody.

00:25:57
Speaker 2: Told Him, dave he's, Fine he's, okay and What dave said to, us and, again we'll, See we will see whenever he makes his next. Start he said That christopher overall On wednesday or On tuesday was. Achy his entire body was, achy so the forearm elbow was achy as.

00:26:17
Speaker 3: WELL i don't know what that.

00:26:20
Speaker 2: Means he didn't seem too too super concerned about, it but, forearm as we, know is connected to the, elbow and SO i will wait and see how he comes out of.

00:26:33
Speaker 7: This, yeah a couple of things on The santa that concerns, me no question about. IT i, mean because you, know you don't want to have the guy be hurt short term or long. Term you don't know how that can develop Develop but as far As Aaron nola is, CONCERNED i think about guys who've been pitched in a long time in the.

00:26:49
Speaker 4: League Zach granki is one that comes to. Mind he was a different type of pitcher later on in his, career and he had to put himself in a position to put just pitched differently and to pitch backwards and to utilize all the different. Pitches that's exactly How nolan may have to end up pitching for the next several. Years AND i think he can do. IT i think he has the ability to do.

00:27:12
Speaker 7: That BUT i, mean, again it's one of those situations, where, hey it's a game of adjustments And hopefully he does get his fastball back as a season wears.

00:27:21
Speaker 4: ON i think he'll get a little bit more zip on, it but he might have to be a different type of a.

00:27:25
Speaker 1: Pitcher that's like you talked about. Adjustments what happened To? Rubin he's. There so my favorite quote about adjustments is Remember Frank. Tanana, yeah he SAID i threw the nineties and the seventies and the seventies and the, nineties but he kept on. WINNING i have.

00:27:51
Speaker 4: To remember Facing Frank tanana in spring training In. Detroit hit a home run off of them in spring? Training was that right?

00:27:57
Speaker 3: There you go At Joker Marshians.

00:27:59
Speaker 1: Stadium that's a three yard marching.

00:28:02
Speaker 4: Stadium, yes that's, right that's. Awesome top of the home RUN i think against them in like nineteen ninety two or ninety.

00:28:08
Speaker 1: Three that's all that was when he was thrown in the. Seventies.

00:28:11
Speaker 2: Correct so before let's let's let's finish talking on the. Offense but before we, DO i want to mention that we are giving away A manco And manco gift. Card you just simply have to follow at The Phillies show ON. X follow The Phillies show ON x that's the Former twitter and you can win yourself A manco And manco gift. Card and so there you. Go the, offense, guys it's kind of. Weird it's, frustrating kind of. Weird phillies are eighth in baseball and batting average two fifty. One they're tied for third and on base percentage three forty fifth in total runners on base the season three and twenty seven overall the, season, twelfth and runs per game four point four to. Four so look at that and, go it's not so. Bad but since the second game of the, season they're averaging just over four runs per, game which is twentieth in. Baseball so right now they're like they're a bottom ten. Offense they've been a bottom ten offense and runs per game since the second game of the. Season and here's why we kind of we've talked about. This twenty first in baseball in slugging percentage three eighty one slugging. Percentage they're twelfth in baseball batting with runners in scoring. Position here's the one that really kills, you, though runners in scoring position with two outs and you know, one they're batting one to eighty eight with runners in scoring position two, Outs so they're just not getting the timely hits and they're not.

00:29:43
Speaker 3: Slugging they have three extra base hits the entire met.

00:29:47
Speaker 1: Series and they got that run yesterday off Of, wednesday off Of, diaz and that was luck because he didn't even look At. Harper harper takes, third the infield comes, in and the routine grond ball goes through drawing an infield with complete. Luck BUT i will say, this of all the flaws this team, Has i'm least concerned about the offense because that's what they. Are they're up there down they're. Inconsistent their, feast they're. Famine and when they have their, feasts you, know they make hay and they win a lot of ball games and improves their record and they're standing and then they get Into october and then it goes cold again and that's when they go. Home SO i just think that's what their offense, is and you're gonna have To you're gonna have to live with it because their highs are pretty high and their lows are pretty hot. Low BUT i think their highs are gonna be enough to get, them at least offensively where they need to. Go it's all about to me whether their bullpen and their rotation is going to hold.

00:30:44
Speaker 11: Up what it has been astounding to me is the fact that they've had a man out third base lesson two, outs AND i don't know what the numbers, are but WHEN i look at the game and watch the, game man on third lesson two outs and maybe one through, nine they can't get them, in can't get him.

00:31:00
Speaker 4: In And i'm not sure if everybody's super.

00:31:04
Speaker 1: Tight i'm not sure if.

00:31:06
Speaker 4: They're trying to do too. MUCH i don't know what it. Is whether they're gripping the bat a little bit too, much, they're you, know whatever the case may. Be, Yesterday Bryson, scott who's been swinging the bat extremely, well been doing a good job in the one, hole gets a hanging. Slider they have a chance to open up the game like nobody's. Business first, pitch he gets a hanging sider right in the middle of the, plate takes. It then later on he sees another one of those hanging. Sliders it hangs too much and just pops it up to short. Right can't drive the run. In if they score that, run the game's. Over i'm not Blaming Bryson scott because this is a epidemic with the, team but it's just not. Happening i'm not sure. WHY i think you're, Right. JIM i think it's a little bit of feast or. Famine but when you have those situations and you have your better hitters, up you gotta take advantage of driving that run, in and it just hasn't.

00:32:04
Speaker 10: Happened casianos has done a pretty good job of, it had some success doing, it but other than, that guys have been struggling with that and that makes it really tough to win baseball, games especially type baseball, games when your bullpen's not that.

00:32:21
Speaker 2: Good, yeah they're the. One i'm not so concerned about the, offense like you, said as much AS i am the health of the Rotation Aaron nola and the. Bullpen and you, KNOW i just think the fact that they're getting guys on base maybe eventually the you, know it's going to. Turn if they can keep getting guys on, base eventually those runs are gonna. SCORE i personally do believe that that eventually they are going to start driving the. Ball you, KNOW i remember so many times during The heyday seven to eleven they be going through a slump AND i remember standing in front Of Chase outley's locker one day and they were in a brutal. Stretch he's, like we're putting a ton of guys on. Base, eventually those guys are going to. Score so as long as they can kind of keep the, approach you, know they're they're chasing fewer, pitches for whatever that's. Worth they're walking a lot. More but, yeah they've got to start driving. RUNS i do think that they're going to score. Runs and you, KNOW.

00:33:17
Speaker 4: I do agree with. That it's just right now for whatever, Reason, uh it's not. Happening and that's the reason why they're losing baseball.

00:33:25
Speaker 1: Games, yeah and they actually On, wednesday if you look at some of the metric kits and balls hard mute hit Like.

00:33:34
Speaker 4: Kat has been totally.

00:33:36
Speaker 2: Screwed, YEAH jt was probably like what DO i have to? Do he was In he must have been feeling like How Alec bohm was filling the first couple of weeks of the season with some of the ball yesterday going what is going on with my?

00:33:48
Speaker 3: Life that this.

00:33:50
Speaker 1: Is this is what the offense. Is you're just gonna have to deal with. It and, Yeah it's been this way for a few years AND i don't see it. Changing deal with it and ride. It ride the, highs suffer through the. Lows but to, me pitching is still number one. Concerned rotation and. Bullpen need that rotation to stay together and be. Healthy need a little more From, nola and you're gonna need to make a tweak in that, bullpen probably more than a. Tweak be great to get a. Closer it would be great to get a closer and slot and Slot alvarado down a little, bit or at least have the flexibility to use them eight or nine wherever that that lefty pocket is or wherever with the three toughest outs. Are and that's WHERE i would be. Looking the clock is ticking on this. Nucleus you, know the odomein is high on this, team the payroll is, high it's win. Now and a closer WOULD i think be a nice big upgrade for this. Team, Guy, yeah they've done.

00:34:57
Speaker 4: That but do you Train Aiden miller For? Helsley that's the. QUESTION I i just, that that is the. QUESTION i, mean it gets down to.

00:35:04
Speaker 1: That and he's the guy that's in my in my focus and uh and the irony of it all is he's the guy that started their twenty twenty two run to The World, Series Ryan. Helsley but uh, yeah that's. Right BUT i don't, know you, know they have to be protective of the three big, Guys, Painter, crawford And. Miller, yeah and that's why it's gonna. Be it's a really because that's the type of player that's gonna.

00:35:33
Speaker 4: TAKE i, mean that's the type of you, know especially right, now If i'm sitting there as The Saint Louis, Cardinals i'm Going i'm waiting out till somebody gives me their best hitting prospect or SOMEONE i think can make an impact in my team fairly.

00:35:48
Speaker 2: Soon, yeah that would be tough pill to, swallow trading somebody like, that exactly, Right, yeah that would be tough.

00:35:54
Speaker 1: Man All, Right i'm Gonna i'm gonna put it on THE gm BECAUSE i don't have the guts to make that. Call MISTER, gm talk to. Me tough to do it.

00:36:06
Speaker 4: Now but in another two weeks or three weeks AND i see the same thing and we're floating around five, hundred MAYBE i. DO i consider.

00:36:16
Speaker 1: It you better know you can win The World.

00:36:18
Speaker 3: Series, well you need to see a lot of other things improve. Too that's the other. THING i.

00:36:23
Speaker 2: Mean IF i don't see the offense start turning things, around IF i don't see some other guys in the, bullpen you, know because one one reliever to me is not Gonna they're not like they're, there they've, Won they're not four games better in the standings right Now Ryan helsley is in the. BULLPEN i, mean they're, better for, sure BUT i want to see some overall improvement to actually make me feel confident this move is going to make a. Difference otherwise you've just traded a top hitting prospect for a closer that you might not even need that much because you're losing every, game you, know three to two going in the eighth.

00:36:51
Speaker 7: Inning, yeah it's a difficult decision to do right, now AND i would not do it now IF i was A.

00:36:56
Speaker 4: GM i don't think there's any question about. THAT i have to see how play. OUT i got to find out Whether romano and you know other And kirker and can get their act together and start pitching.

00:37:07
Speaker 7: Away they think that they can and have the ability to do and if they can do, that, Great if they, can't then THEN i got to start putting my thinking cap on about you, know making them very very tough.

00:37:18
Speaker 1: Decisions, everything everything has to be, clicking and you have to know that we're one piece away from one of the world.

00:37:25
Speaker 3: Series, absolutely we got more to.
