Speaker 1: So last December or last what it was December, right December last year, Will gave me the me and my family the most generous gift and so long, Um you somehow because you did something for Disney. I don't know what you did, but you can six explain it. But you did some amazing convention thing and they gave you the opportunity. They said, what do you want, and you said, I want a VIP tour Disneyland like the old school way which we used to get when we are on Boylan World, which is you get a person that is a VIP guests relations and they take you around and you get to go to the front of the line of the rides and they will take you wherever you want. And you said, I want to do that, and I want to bring writer and his son Indie, and ended up not only did the two of us get to go, Um, obviously your wife came and then um, you were able to get my wife to come and my wife's sister. So we had like this amazing family and friends trip to Disneyland, which was I mean, now it's ruined for Indie, like he's never going to be able to experience we had been once before where we waited in the lines and did all this stuff. But but yeah, I mean it was just so incredible. Um, and I know I've thanked you a bunch, but like, thank you again. It was great. Yeah, we were did we did so Christy Carlson and I did. Um. It was the twenty something, this the the anniversary of Kimpossible and we did d twenty three. We did a penalty twenty three and they said, hey, if you come down for the days or anything you want, and I was like, yeap, I want to go to Disneyland old school away right, um, and Danielle, I just figured your little ones were just too young at this point. They are, trust me, they're absolute nightmares to take to Disneyland. I figured I'll let you know. They're also not yet tall enough to ride any of the rides. So yeah, we're we're are still an inch too short to ride some of the greatest rides a ride. Adler can ride all the fun little kid rides, but like, we're still you think you need to be forty inches or forty two inches, so maybe we're Yeah, he's he's thirty nine, so we're still you know, three inches away from there, so that's when you know you're an adult, when you stop measuring yourself an inches. I know. Also, I'm just barely above most of them, you know, I'm only sixty one inches tall, and ad there's already thirty nine inches tall. So yeah, yeah, no. So the strangely enough, the thing I remember, the hardest, most jarring, most dangerous, scariest ride we did was that little kids ride at the very end, Goofy Sky School, Goofy Sky That is the worst ride I've ever been on in my life. I've never been more terrified. We looked at the indies, let's go on that one. We're like, it's called Goofy Sky School. Yeah, it's a litt kid's roller coaster, and it is terrifying. Whoa, it's pretty California adventure Land. And it's like, for whatever reason, the way it's designed, you're sitting on you're like above the track in this weird way. You're in a little car, and the turns are like super sharp, and that's kind of the point. But man, if you're over the age of like eight, it is painful and really terrifying. And I for some reason, the way it's designed, I kept thinking we were going to tip over, Like okay, so producer tar I just wrote, you feel like you're going to fall off the whole time. You're high up and you feel like you're on you're going to fall And I guess the story is that is originally called muleholand something, which is it was originally Full Holland Drive, which is the windy salls along the head the top of the mountains here in La in between the Valley and Hollywood. And so it's so I guess that was the original title and it wasn't, you know, clever or Disney related enough, so they changed it to Goofy Sky School. Oh my god, it was I just don't I never want to do it again. At the Indian was like, do it again? Well, that's so apparently what it is. So the first of all, when these wonderful guides come with you, they kind of have to go on the rides with you. When they bring you on the ride, then they have to go on. So we had done Guardians, the Galaxy, the Tower Drop where you're dropping one hundred times. We're doing all these roller coasters and we go to Disney Sky School and she loses all the color in her face, this poor woman, and she and she didn't discourage us. I can't believe she didn't say anything to you. What she said was essentially, it's made for kids, so anybody over fifty inches it's terrifying. Oh my gosh, so an adult going on it. I mean, we looked at each other at the end. First of all, you're pretty sure you're going to urinate blood the next day, and and and you also felt like it was both of us just essentially shaking as we had finished this ride. It was horrid. It was It was no that Star Wars ride where are all of a sudden taken hostage. And then there's a whole group of actors that so first of all, you go under full size, life size the Resistance. The greatest part though, was so we get there and we're we go on the ride and where you start and there's all these actors that are, you know, playing the part of who they're supposed to be. So first you get stormtroopers. Stormtroopers that come in, like the General walks onto your ship and goes, hey, rebel scum, get out of here. We're gonna we're gonna interrogate you. So they bring you into this room and then all of a sudden, the wall, you know, tends to burn down, and all these actors are so into it. And then we got into the second level and there's just one woman. He's like, Hi, I'm Karen. I'm here for the Resistance, I'm here to save you. Follow me please, And it was just she was so just phoning it in, that Sue and I could not stop laughing. Yeah, we're here to save you. Come on, let's go this way, Karen fired from Disneyland, Karen. They have to give it. They're there for the most part, they're all giving it. They're all, let's give Disney. And that's why it was so jarring that poor Karen just was phoning it in on the day. I hope her name wasn't really Karen. I'm glad we used everyone out there. It's probably not Karen, but oh that ride was. And then you're un there with storm troopers and at eighties and it was just I say, I wanted to bring it up because I feel like this is you know, this is one of the major benefits of being on a show that was produced by Disney is that we felt like we were sort of always slightly behind the scenes at Disneyland, and then of course we did the episode of Disney World. So it's like an essential part of our childhood and our adolescence that we, you know, we felt like we owned the place, and like, I just think that that's like really special and really cool and probably something that makes a lot of people out there super jealous. And I just want to say it was awesome, and it was always I felt so relaxed at Disneyland. I remember me and Ben running around from the park, like because what they would do is they would shut it down for only employees and the holidays every night, so the park would close early. They don't do this anymore, but the park would close early for like five days a week. And if you work for Disney in any department, not just actors, you could get you go for that for a night and it would be like from six pm until midnight. We would have the park too, and there would just be barely anybody there, but all the rides would be running, and it was it was the greatest, Like it was just the good. And then like there was a time that Ben and I wrote Splash Mountain twenty five times because of filming on it like there was just a sense that we were always like it was our place, it was our park, and you know, and then of course one point in world ended. We never got asked back. Yeah, that's that became impossible when we had this opportunity. It was like, thirty, not only is this bringing back my childhood, but I can share this with Indie and he gets to have a little bit of this magic like yeah, he was, he was having glass. It was so much fun. And that's the most time I've ever spent with Indie, and I want said I wanted to spend more time with them. Yeah, for children are important for some reason, so it'll be fun to hang out with him more. He's a good kid. He's a good kid. He definitely I can't wait for my kids to be old enough and then we could do a big old group trip. Yes, yeah, maybe if you get our powers together, and that's what I'm saying, I can also, you know, I guess the argument be it'd be too hard for us to deal with the fans. We're gonna get recognized too often, which would not be the case. I think anybody recognize me anyway. I think you can pay for the service. Actually, now we make can't can no Writer? Don't you recall you did get recognized? Did get recognized as somebody else? Who was it wasn't for you? Nobody came up. They were like are you and they threw out a random actor name. I think it's because they saw us with the VIP guy, so they assumed that we are somebody famous and they walked right after him and they're like are you blah blah blah blah, and I was like no, no, and then she walked away and then I was like, well, that's who is that. We looked it up. He's like fifty five years old. I was. It was like, oh, yeah, believable. Writer, did get recognized just as someone else? Yeah? Great, I love it. That's that's my favorite. Well, today we are recapping season two, episode eight, Band on the Run. It originally aired November eleventh, nineteen ninety four. The synopsis is that Corey and Sean create a fake band to impress the girls in school, but when mister Feeney books their band for the upcoming school dance, things get complicated. All of this while Alan gets his own childhood band back together. It was directed by David Trayner, written by Mark Blackman and Howard Buskang, and we have a long list of guest stars. Mickey Dolan's as Norm, Rick Nielsen as Gordy, Billy Vera as Larry, Joanna Trias as Sonia, Julie Hull as Sherry, Rembrandt, Sabellis who's just credited as Rembrandt who his name was scream in the episode, Adam Scott's first appearance as Senior, and Maddie Lou as four so Oh one More Sorry, and Andre Flentes as Flip so all the band guys had really cool names name Thor, Flip Senior. I'm I'm putting myself on a limb. I'm gonna say it. I'm gonna say it again. I really loved this episode. I did kill so much fun. It's awful. No, I'm just kidding, No, I love it. You know, I did really like this episode. I didn't like where it ended, but I mean we can get there. I have for something something about the ending philp dissatisfying to me and I'm not Rusty Rusty amazing. No, this is probably Rusty's best episode in the second season. He's so funny, so funny this uh. Producer Jensen Carr, husband of this podcast, says it's his favorite episode to date. Whoa, he really really enjoyed it, loved the premise, so I mean we I'm so glad we all love this episode. Really fun I'm really excited about this recap. Um. So we start in Chubbies. Yeah, back at Chubbies. Corey asks a girl out to the school dance and she says she's sorry, her grandmother is sick. Sean asks if Corey has had any luck, and Corey says, apparently everyone's grandma is sick. And then two guys, one of whom is senior Adam Scott with that magnificent hair. Wow. Yeah, you know, I did not. I almost didn't recognize him. Almost I didn't either, And Sue was like, wait, where I thought Adam Scott was in this scene? Him? Like that's him, that's wow, Oh my god, he looks so different. Yeah, which is totally why they could recast him as Griffin, Like you right, and even right, I don't think most people put that together everyone because he looked so different. Yeah, no, it's probably why we didn't remember him playing another character either. He didn't look anything like that. So they walked. Two guys walk up to Corey and Sean and asked them to hold their guitars. Sean says Corey should just ask to Panga to the dance, and Corey says, oh, there's no growth if you just keep asking the same girl you've asked to every dance since you were five. So there you go. It's up to five. But you know, maybe you guys did meet at three, but then you were right that the first dance was fun. The first dance was fine. That's more where I bump is it is there a kindergarten dance? Well, yeah, okay, the enchantment under the naptime dance. Everyone of course will knows about that brain work. I know, it's so fast. It's just immediately back to the future reference perfectly nailed. Combines back to the future so fast. By the way, speaking of callbacks, all of this scene is taking place in front of the giant drink piss sign. Oh it is behind all of them in the chubby scene. Yes, okay, yes, didn't notice it, but of course you did. Perception boy. So two girls we've now revealed that there are. Sonja and Sherry come up to Corey and Sean and are interested in them, but it's because they're holding guitar cases. Sean says it's because they are musicians, and Corey says, oh, well, then watch me pull a rabbit out of this hat. Great joke, great joke. As I lost it, I thought that was a great It's so funny. It's just a perfect Corey moment, right exactly. I love it. I love it on so many levels. One, it's just clever too, it's such it's such perfect that like Corey is such I don't want to use the word nerd, but he's so like little nerdy that he heard they like it because we're magicians, and he's like, oh, of course, I'll go ahead, right. I just have so many Michael jacobs ism in this episode. I know so many direct Michael Jacob's reads in this episode. I know I heard I was catching him too. Hello there. The girls walk away and are very impressed that the guys are in a band, and Corey and Sean contemplate, well, there's no way we could keep this lie going. It's it just would be impossible, and then Adam Scott and his friend return and they take their guitars up the stairs and the girls are impressed that they have roadies so cute. This was a part of the episode for me that the girls, these two girls, which is it's not their fault, it's not about their perform it's just again, we flattened these characters to really nothing and like, oh, you know, they're mean until they like and then it's just the flirty like they're literally like swaying their bodies towards us while they're talking. It's just like, yeah, it just feels so fake and and for the I don't know, it just flattens the girls, the female characters to such a degree that I was like, Okay, yeah, they just couldn't we have done the same point, Like, couldn't we have had girls be interested in us without it being complete they just complete cardboard cutouts of human beings, like because I like, honestly, I'm looking at this episode, I don't remember these actors at all. And and I think part of the reason I don't remember them at all is because they didn't have much to do, Like they were just playing. It's like an Alicia's Silverstone lookalike in a lot of ways, doing a sort of ballet girl thing, and then the other girl, and they're just there's nothing there for them. And it's not about them being bad actors. It's just them having bad characters. And like that was lazy writing to me. And it's like We've done this in the show a million times already and I'm just sick of it. So that was a big bummer for me. Is that like they didn't get any layers or anything, you know. Yeah, I think also though we're never going to see them again, and they're just suiting the purpose of the guys coming up with a scheme and single service characters. It's like that's what you do. You rip it open, you dump it out, and then you throw it away. Yeah yeah, and I you know, so, yeah, I can see how that's I can see how that's a bummer. But I also think we give we have to give so much credit to how layered all of the Bully characters are. And then there's the you know, we had so many new characters in this season that did get layers and story that characters. Yea, yeah, no, I see I see your point. I do see your point. It didn't bother me too much in this because also I love Topanga calls it out later, who yeah are you? Are you? Which I love it. So, continuing the recap, we are in the Matthews living room. Corey is trying to play guitar and Alan walks in and says, oh, my guitar. Alan says he used to be in a band that's saying about freedom of speech and the war in Vietnam. Corey says he and Sean are starting a band to meet chicks. Amy walks in and exposes that Alan's band was also about meeting chicks, and uh, It's revealed that Alan's band was called The Tongues. Yeah, heck, yeah, I'm on board? Are I? They had me? It sounds it's so ridiculous, But I was so invested in this episode. I don't know why, because you're such a huge part in it. Yeah, exactly, Maybe because I because I'm not a reading That's why I liked it. Is I just just completely divorced from the entire episode and I was just watching an episode of TV and it was just like things didn't make a lot of sense. Why is Alan home from work but Betsy's not? If she and I was like, I'm not thinking about any of this. I want to I want to see the tongues, Like it's all that was going through my head. Was like, I just want to see the tongues. It was great. Yeah, it was so good in this. He's so good. He like visibly is going through a midlife crisis and it's great to watch. So he's forty. Oh I know, he's only forty. So he he pines about his old music days and says his bandmates were his soulmates, and then wonders, I wonder if they're still alive. There's still alive at forty And then we're back in the school hallway. The girls tell Corey and Shop I have a quick question, why why do he didn't Why is Betsy's character against him? Thinking they're talking about the band like to begin with, I have my theory, and then it's and she kind of addresses it where it's he's not gone because he was bad. He's yeah, I guess it does get there. I just couldn't help but wondering, like why is this a problem? Let him relive his glory days like this is cool? And I was like, there's conflict here in the scene, but I didn't understand what her motivation was. But you're right, I guess it's that she knows he sucks. He's just bad. Yeah, he's bad at it. Yeah, yeah, I love you, but you're terrible at them. Right, you were bad at this and you didn't know it at the time, but you might know it. No, yeah, right, that's that is great. That is great. But I'm watching that first scene, I was like, why is she why is she crushing his kids cool dream right now? Like there's there should be nothing wrong with like a forty year old wanted to get out the guitar and jam. Right. I don't know, but yeah, I guess he's Yeah, I think I think it's that he's stinky at it. Um. So, the girls tell Corey and Sean, who are walking with their guitar cases, that they really want to hear them play. Corey pulled Sean off to the side and admits that he has an egg salad sandwich in his guitar case. Because I writer, I thought it was so funny that you just keep saying, let's play, let's just play, let's play, let's I gotta be honest. I loved dumb Sean. There's a lot of dumb Sean in this episode. Dumb Sean is like hello, He's like front and center in this episode. Can we talk about I was going to bring this up a little later, but dumb Sean is Eric. So there are speeches, especially especially later, like the this is so crazy, it's just my work. You could have just erased Sean, yes and put Eric season four or five, I think, and it would have been exactly the same, exactly the same. Yeah, that's what it And then they want to plug in character. You know what I mean. Character. Yeah, there's funny riffs, and there's funny it's just it's just gives Corey somebody to bounce off of or whomever in your case, Matt Lawrence, you know, yeah, you need. It's a great it's a great trope. And it started with Sean, obviously it did. But there were times I was like, oh, that could have been an Ericsby, Oh that's an Risby. Like it just was. So they just went, this doesn't working for Sean, Let's write the same stuff ericly and it was how long this is gonna last? Because I I when I saw like that riff in particularly when you're talking about in Chubbies. You know, I was like, oh, I remember doing this kind of stuff a lot, and I feel like I might have done it all the way up until like fifth season, Like I feel like there was enough. Will has tried to tell you, I think it's gonna last lot. I think it's going to be shorter than you think. So Will thinks it's going to be over like somewhere in this season, and you think it may have gone even until fifth. So we'll find out. We'll find out as well. We'll find out as we go along. So since neither of the boy know how to play guitar, this is quite a predicament. They say their manager won't let them play because of the death of their drummer. Oh I lost it. I'm sorry. I thought that was just such a great We're just trying to get over the death of our drummer. Oh God, I love very funny. And then Tapanga comes over and says everybody is talking about them because they're starting a band. And then the two new groupies explain the band is awesome, but they need a drummer. And then Tapeanga asks the question everyone's wondering, who are you? Who are you. I thought was hysterical because, like to writer's point, they are really one note characters. We're never going to see them again, We're never going to talk about them again. And so I love just calling it out on its own. Where did you come from? You? Yeah? Is a great way of dealing with it. Did anyone in a kay? I get he's the star of the show, and he should be, But for somebody who's supposed to be flying under the radar at school and trying to find his niche every episode everyone in school talking about Corey Yeah, And so I thought that was kind of I was like, Okay, that's kind of interest, Like, you're just supposed to be the regular guy. But every either it's Phenie Weenie or it's in bed with you know, did he sleep with Topanga? Now he's part of the band. He's like the most in school. He's the most popular kid in school, is he? Or again? Is it because it's just Corey's POV. What I'm wondering is he supposed to be the center of attention because he's constantly the center of everyone in the school is always talking about this kid that no one's ever talking about. Yeah, exact So it's it's I always thought that was interesting, the magic of TV. Yeah, so the girls respond, we're with the band. Topega then tells Corey that Jeremy asks her to the school dance and she's trying to feel it out if that's okay with Corey and he says, yes, that's fine. Go I'm good, do your thing, and Topanga walks away. I have a have a question, Danielle. Can you call him me? Yes? Will Um. From an acting standpoint for you, worry I was because I was trying to see how you were playing this. Were you playing it like you went to Corey because you wanted him to say, no, don't go out with him, ask me to the dance? And were you a little hurt when you were walking away, or were you playing it like Corey kind of said, Hey, we've gone every dance together and maybe we need to be with somebody else. I'm just curious. So I was playing it like Corey asks me. Every year, someone else has now asked me before Corey, And part of that subtext is Corey should have asked me by now, this is beyond the time of Corey asking me, So somebody else asked me, but before I just say yes, I'm gonna make sure he's not. I don't want to. I don't want to have to say no to him if he asks me, So I'm going to put my feelers out there. But then also when he says I'm fine, I wasn't upset by it or hurt by it. I'm like, again with the confidence of Tapega, like, if we're meant to be together, it's going to happen. It's totally cool. So when I was walking away and I was like, well then maybe i'll see you there, there wasn't any sort of like bummer, why didn't he want to go with me? It's more like, okay, we're just not going to go together this year. Okay. I was curious. At least that's how I felt I saw it when I watched it, because I actually liked that when she walked away, there wasn't a bit of like, yeah, why don't you want to go with me? It was more like very tupang of her. This is a really dumb question. Is saying we're with the band? That's like a common thing, right? That line predates this from something's particular or is it just a cultural just the regular groupie we're with the band kind of thing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think it's what you said when people would ask to see your tag, like do you have a ticket? Do you have a think we're we're with the band, right. I just didn't know, like I always know that line, but I didn't know if it was from this moment or from like I think it repeated this because we said it on Boy Meets World, or if it was like a classic go to sort of cliche. Yeah, I think so, I think so. Yeah. Yeah. So, Sonja and Sherry say they want to meet the other guys in the band the guy Sean told them about, especially the guitarist who can play with his teeth. Corey says he's at the dentist right now. I thought it was hysterical. I thought it was really funny. Oh he said the dentist right now. I thought it was really cute. And then Sean, knowing that they're in trouble, says I've never said this before. We're going to need some guys and writer, you're wearing the ring. Did you notice the ring? I noticed that I had a ring on, but I didn't look at it close enough. And I do remember I think if it's the ring that I remember from my childhood or in my tween years. It's an eagle ring. I think it's it's it's actually got an eagle on it, and then on the back is like a black stone, like an onyx or whatever a black stone is on like the eagles back from Okay, I don't know. I think I bought it at some store or when I was a kid or whatever. It's my ring, but yeah, okay, well I'm wearing. So that was the ring that was in the previous episode that i'd noticed. So then we're in the Matthews living room, Corey and Sean are holding band auditions. There's a tuba player, an overenthusiastic drummer, and then I wanted to mention Rembrandt comes in and he's the one who plays guitar too well. And I don't know if you guys remember him, but he was on a show called Superhuman Samurai Cyber Squad. Yeah yeah, and uh, he had fantastic hair. He used to do some of that. He is some of those like autograph signings we would do at different charity events. And he is one of the many people I have a full photo shoot with in my in in one of my many photo albums, I have many a picture with Rembrandt, and it got me on a bit of a deep dive and I looked him up on the internet and I was so sad to find out he passed away in twenty sixteen. Whoa what he had cancer? Oh yeah, I know. I was very sad to see that. Wow. Oh that's terrible. Yeah, super Human Samurai Cyber Squad, which also starred a young Matt Lawrence. Correct, I forgot that that cross over there. That's terrible to hear. I know, I absolutely remember him. I remember him for a mistake he was constantly making during during the episode. Really later, yeah, but it was it was just the thing he kept saying over and over until I correct him. Yeah. We'll get into that later. But now I've got to feel bad because he's passed away. Well, don't feel bad, but I did want to. I did just want to say, like, it's you know, it's funny because there are all these people who who we cross paths with over the years and who come into your life and and then you don't think about him again. And then I opened up my photo album and I was like Oh, my gosh, rem Brand. I don't remember rem Brand. I wonder what he's doing, and then I look him up and I'm like, oh my gosh, it's gone. So anyway, yeah, made me sad. Oh the extra with the accordian is the one that you believe was my stand in the screen. I do not believe that that is the case. I believe it is a different person with the very same hair like we with such similar looks. But I believe it was a different extra that joined us later. That was my standing. Okay, after seeing it again, I think I agree with Rider. Really, I think it is a different guy. That was the end. Then there were sean one again. I'm not one hundred percent sure, but after seeing it again, I was like, oh, I think that's the guy we thought it was, and I don't think it's him anymore. Yeah, so I think that guy goes away. Yeah, the accordion guy isn't there by the time. We see some later episodes and there's a new dude in there that kind of has the same kind of cut. Yeah, but I could be wrong, but I think I feel too. But he does look so much like me. It's interest, you know, why don't you get that haircut. It's a popular haircut, guys, it really was you. He had the Rachel so um uh, they're chanting monks. I tried to see very closely. Are those any of our writers did not? And then there's something Thor who only performs a pose, and they pick Thor and another guitarist who just shows his tongue because they thought that was very cool. I remember the drummer vividly because that guy's great. Yeah. I was just drumming where my favorite part is his walk out where he's still playing on the ground while walking somehow I know. I was like, this is a skill like that. You go to find a real drummer who could do that and physically physical humor. It was great, and I thought they missed a joke though. I thought they missed a joke, which is it should have been as Corey leads him out and slams the door, there should have been a dunt dunt on the door with the drums walked out like it should have finished on the on the shut door part of his rhythm and something something like that. Yeah, and there needed to be something, Yeah, but that was other than that. That's the reshoot idea. You know that is a good idea. So with these two new guys in the band, Corey and Sean explained that no matter how cute the girl is, they are never going to play a note because they don't know how. And then Alan comes in with an amp. He founded a girl, can we Why is the couch turned conveniently? I was wondering that same thing. Why not just have everybody in front of them? I don't, well, it's I mean, I needed the amp and we needed to so, and it obviously is this way for the scene when the band is playing. But this makes no sense because if it had been turned like this for the auditions, I would have gotten it. But it wasn't the auditions. It was it was yes, it was yeah, it was turned already at an angle for the auditions because that's how he's playing the drums and then goes right, yes it is, yeah, He's She's right, it is okay, Okay, Then then it makes sense. So it was that way turned to face the door so as people came in, we could Okay. Then I just got confused because I saw it here. I was like, well, that's convenient that the amp just fits in that big open space is now here for the first time. Yeah, yeah, no it was. It was turned already, so you just missed it because it felt so natural in that scene. Normal. So uh, Corey's band leaves, Alan review his old band is coming over on Friday night. Eric comes up behind him with more equipment and Alan's old band outfit, which has now been dry cleaned. His jacket. Alan shows jacket. The jacket's cool and fringe jackets cool. Now, yeah, they're back in. I wonder when they were going to come back, because they like ten years ago. It would be like such a joke. But you know, leather jacketsypt for a way of going through evolutions, and like, I feel like the Fringe is bound to come back if it's not already. I don't necessarily know how much fringe I've seen for men, but fringe is definitely back. Oh yeah for women. I'm asking I'm asking about okay. That's what I was like, Yeah, okay, because I thought, yeah, I'm not sure. I'm not up on my men's fashion. This is also my favorite joke of the whole episode. It is so funny. Which one are you thinking of the names in the sleeve? Oh no, I always think that's funny too. No, I was thinking of I loved Amy's joke because Amy's joke if you are if you are this type of person, which I am, is such a perfect joke where he Alan walks in and says, can you believe I bought this amp? This guy didn't know what he had, and she just deadpant says I bet his wife did. Like it was just it's such a for somebody who collects crap or I like literally would be like, can you believe somebody was throwing away this table? I also just I love Betsy in that mode. Her like deadpan and understated performance is yes, consistently the best, And I love that that's Amy's character. I don't think I ever was conscious of that now, but like you know, there there's so many episodes now where she's not judging or overreacting, she's just quietly dealing with the person and throwing out that aside. That is brilliant. I love that mode. Did I know? But you're right that the names in the sleeve name actually do it. Yeah, I mean Alan shows Eric that Amy was a big fan of the band when they were younger. He even has her name sewn in the sleeve, and then Eric noticed his other names Paula, Bethany, Ashley, and Alan says, oh, no, those are just other cities they played in Northern Pennsylvania, and then of course admits that he's lying. You're lying so smart and funny, it's so cute. It's just towns in northern Pennsylvania. So we're in the school hallway. Sherry and Sonya walk up and ask Corey what he's doing, and he says he's just hearing music in his head, posing with his guitar gaze. And I'd like to say, what is Sherry wearing. She's got the hot pink beanie. I'm not quite sure what the shirt is. It's like Neon planets. But also I think I noticed a cup of coffee in there, and then a hot pink miniskirt. I saw the shirt or like the sweater, whatever you want to call it, and I knew instantly that's like a Sarah Markowitz fine from one of her many vintage halls. Like I just know that is. I could not get over my clothing in this episode. It is all over the place. It's weird. Is weird, it's weird. I think they were going through a thing like I think it was, let's riff until we can find a look for Sean. And of course I think they stumbled upon it in this episode too when we get there. But that that one shirt you're wearing is the white one with the white white red mock turtleneck. Oh my god, I know every outfit is crazy. To me, I was like, what is happening? They were just they were just experimenting. Sarah was experimenting, and obviously I didn't care or didn't notice, just I just put on whatever they told me to. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, the clothes were something else. So mister Turner walks up and tells Corey he's pretty smooth. Corey explains to mister Turner that he's cool too, because see how Turner's holding his helmet and it makes him cool. He's holding a guitar case and that makes Corey cool. And mister Feenie walks out into the hallways to announce that the Demon Seeds have dropped out of performing at the school dance and he is going to replace them with the Cool Caribbean Sounds of Joe Joe Man and Brother B, which is a cassette tape cassette tape. Well this is kind of dated even then, but I guess people still played tapes then, right, Yeah for sure, Oh sure, early nineties absolutely, yeah, but you remember all the I mean it was like I had so remember we were driving around in my Celica. I had the CD player, but it was also removable, so I could pull it out and put in the tape player. Oh man, So if you had anything on tapes then bam you could go do that. So yeah, so cool. The player was big. So the students say, we get into that later. But by the way, we'll get into the name to the band later because I have a distinct memory of that tape and I want to know if I'm right or not, because I think I am, but I want to know if I'm right or not. We'll see, Okay. So the students say they want live music, and then Sherry and Sonia volunteer Corey and Shawn's band. The girls even vouch for them and say they sound great on the spot. Now, Corey says they're called the Exits after he sees a sign that says exit and mister Feini writes their name on the school poster. They have a gig Oh, I'm sorry, but how do you not call yourself blood Drive? I go, I mean that is the first thing he said. That's a great thin name. How do you not call yourself blood drive? I know that is a better name than the Exit. I think that's the point, isn't it. It's like any one of these could be good, but they'd be more controversial. So he goes for Exits because it's also to set up the joke at the at the end. But it was like, that's always thinking to myself, is like, how are we not? How are you not the blood Drive? Great name? It is pretty funny. I guess that is your right. Of the options he thought of, it's the most the exits is the most celery of them all. Yeah, exactly perfect. So then we're in Chubby's Corey, Sean and the other two band members are talking about what they're going to do with the stance. They are not supposed to play at all, even though Phenie booked them. The two other band members leave, they are out. Sean says they'll only play the hits, no new stuff. This run writer, I know, it's really funny. I mean the writing is just clever man and then Corey throws water in Sean's face and Sean realizes, yep, weird shirt. Do you remember getting the water in the face? No? Yeah, no, no recollection of I mean when it started happening, really the next phase in the riff, when I'm like, that's so crazy, it just might work, Yeah, and Ben sort of giving me that incredulous like but what are you talking about? We did a lot of this, and I feel like this sort of Corey Shawn dynamic of like Ben's face looking at me being like you're being ridiculous right now, and me just keep going and going. I mean, that's why I feel like this must have lasted until fifth or sixth season, because that felt so familiar and comfortable, and seeing Ben's face, I was like, oh, I know, I know this mode, and this is really a fun mode. It's a fun mode for the two of us, you know, where he's just like looking at me like you're so ridiculous, and I just keep going. It was such an Eric thing though, that whole speech. I was like, this could be an Eric speech. This is Eric's season five speech right here. Yeah, I know. It was so strange that they just switched the characters but it is so fun, you say. Sean realizes he's in it deep after he gets water in the face, and Corey says, we have to come up with a plan, and Sean says, ah, that's just so crazy. It might work. Corey says, I didn't tell you what the plan was, and Sean says, yeah, so they can't get it out of me, and Corey says, get what out of you? And Sean slyly says, nice, try so you're funny. Yeah, really really a cute fun run. And then we're in the Matthews living room. Alan's bandmates are hanging out in the living room, and so you guys know who these members are. There's Mickey Dolan's who is the drummer from The Monkeys, Rick Nielsen, the lead guitarist of Cheap Trick, and Billy Vera, the singer of Billy Vera and the Beaters. Ye. Now, you may think you don't know who billy Vera or billy Vera and the Beaters is, but do you know he had a number one song at this moment. If I were to play at this moment for you right now, you would be like, that's the greatest song of all time it is. Yes, it's the Family Ties song. What do you mean the theme song for the Family Time. So Family Ties is the song that when he meets his Alex Keaton finally meets the woman that he falls in love with, who actually he ends up marrying in real life, Tracy Poland I think her name is when when he leaves. It's the song that plays when she goes back to Franklin Marshall, she goes back to a school in massive in Pennsylvania, and this is the song. So a single episode of Family Ties right now. Yeah, absolutely, And so that song exploded. It was everywhere. It was number one, and that was one of the reasons is because of this and when you play it, it is like it is one of the best songs ever. The whole all of them sitting there around the couch together was super cool. And the thing I remember most about that night was I was talking to it was like it was you Rider, it was somebody. It might have even been you, Danielle, I can't remember, but we were sitting there watching them film this scene. Yeah, and one of you was like, wait, so who's the guy with the beard right, And I was like, it's a Cheap Trick and you're like, what, what's cheap Chick. I'm like, dude, Cheap Chick is like one of the best bands ever. You have no idea. And I turned around and the lead singer from Cheap Chick was standing right behind us. Oh that's what you said, not like, yeah, the most overrated band in their worst Yeah, that's such a joke. I can't believe this guy's here right. Oh no, it was awesome. So they I mean we turned around. I was like, oh, and there's the lead singer right behind us Cheap Trick. It was so cool, and I just remember him being a little inappropriate in front of the audience, just kind of you know, swearing and innuay. He's a rock star and he's kind of you know, they're there and in front of this entire thing of kids. But funny, it was very, very cool to have them all there. Yeah, it's believe. Well, the referenced one episode of Family Times. I'm You're amazed, but I know we're not amazing. No, I'm not amazing that you're making the reference. I was like trying to point out that why would we like no one episode like you were, And I guess it was a legendary episode. Was still like, you know, that's like saying run and run him, cowboy, you know, the the nineteen thirty six one one I give the whole show. Maybe if it was the theme song, but no. Yeah. So the guys are all talking about cemetery plots and their cholesterol and Alan Alan has freaked out that the tongues are talking about such mundane old guy stuff. And then Mickey Dolan shows some comedy chops with a story about cheating on his wife, which is really that he changes out breads. He brings home some pastry that he slapped a fat freeze sticker on from the grocery store. It's actually really funny. The Monkeys was amazing. Did you not watch the Monkeys? No? Will? I didn't not? Oh go if you want to see a genuinely funny sitcom that then they play music. The Monkeys was hysterical. It was they were They had a real acting experience, actual acting experience. Actually yea, yeah, he was. They were phenomen They were great. It was part Benny Hill, part old school sitcom. They were. They were great. Well, Alan asks if the guys remember the triplets in Scranton. They do not, and then Amy comes in asking what they want to drink, Alan says Bruce Kis, but instead they want mineral water, diet iced tea, and carrot juice. Runs the carrots through the ju I mean, honestly, I thought. The thing that made me laugh the most about it is that I would absolutely murder somebody if I invited them over to my house and I was like, can I get a carrot juice? Can I get you something to drink? And they were like, could you just run some carrots through the juicer? I'd be like, no, I have you know that I have a juicer. I don't have one, and I don't have carrots, and so you're out of luck. Oh I can broccoli and the air fryer a little were all together at Danielle's house. I know that's what you're going to do, all right? You know what, I'm going to buy a juicer and joys and carrots, just Ina. Oh I can't wait, I cannot wait. Oh my god, who's going to bring this call back? First? The races on YouTube, Guys, how many carrots am I gonna How many carrots am I gonna have? Just twenty four hours a day I'm gonna have carrots and they're gonna keep dying and I'm just gonna keep throwing them away. You can make it really easy, because it doesn't will jog by your house every day. You could just go outside one day with carrot carriages. I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna do that. Corey and Sean walked to the door, looking cool with theirs to the night. Yeah, this is the moment. I'm wearing the leather jacket. It's your ja, It's the first leather jacket. This is it. So that's what I was saying. They were experimenting with my love and they obviously they were like, well, let's try this leather jacket which Eric wore last season, and this was the moment. This is the first time Sean did it. And I was like, and the hat, which was kind of cool, like I'm not a real hat person. I guess I was back then. Member, Yeah, he used to wear for the door. I have pictures of you with my sixteenth birthday or fifteenth, one of the two birthdays, and you were just in a gray fedora. You loved it so much, loved it. I still have it, um, but you love it. I still kind of love it, but now I can't can't do that, but um, but yeah, this hat looked pretty good. But the jacket I was just so happy to see. And it's definitely still kind of big on me like it always was. It fit will better. That's very true, very true. So they tell Alan they're heading to their first gig and Alan doesn't get it they're a new band. But then Alan pulls out his old electric guitar and everyone says their guitars are in their cars. The Tongues are going to jam again, and Alan is thrilled. All the guitars a guitar, nobody's got a basse, nobody played the drums. No, I feel like the Tongues would have a drummer. I feel like they would probably. But Amy hopes that this reunion is not now to just meet chicks. And then we go to the school dance. Mister Feeney comes out to talk to the crowd and says, stay in school. Oh my god, let's run on Bill. It is just the funniest Bill is. So this is my favorite Mister Phoenie episode of second season. I love this because it's like it's it's it's uh you know he's no, he's it's all the obligatory Phoenie boat Phoenie beats, but him making fun of them, like it's you know, it's like, oh, you know, later he's gonna do it. But even this, like it's just Phoenie being Phoenie but somewhat self aware, and Bill is just his spherical I just thought he was Yeah, he's amazing. Yeah, he's also it sounds so strange because it's Bill Daniels, but you can tell he's now fully comfortable. So the format of the TV show, with what he's doing with his character, with being with kids, it's now just like it's it's full on. Yeah. We also missed in the hallway. I don't mean to go back, but we missed, and I'm glad. They talked about it a little bit. But again Turner always with his helmet, I know, and again they referenced it, but I was still like, is why does he have his helmet? He's okay because they need the helmet, but he just keeps the helmet, goldeness helmet. You go with the helmet. Sorry. So Turner says, Phoenie is killing the mood, and Pheny says, good Corey and Sean see that the gym is packed and there are pretty girls everywhere. Corey reveals they brought guys to actually play guitar for them while they pretend to play, and then Rembrandt comes back and he asks what this gig pays, But Corey isn't going to pay them, so they quickly leave because they've got a paid gig somewhere else. This is where I was going to mention. He kept saying over and over again and emphasizing it as he walked in. He goes, well, then we're not staying. We gotta playing gigs somewhere else. We gotta playing somewhere else. And then and so it was after like the second or third time, it was Michael kind of going, okay, it's it's paying, it's paying. He's like, oh, okay, sorry, So he just kept saying, we got a playing gig down the street. Distinctly remember that. Yeah, that's funny. I'm surprised you think Michael let him go two or three times of saying it, Yeah, that's wrong. I remember a couple He said it a couple times though, right, he was like, let's just give him another take, And he was like emphasizing it too right, playing down the street, it's like, okay, oh that's funny. Well, mister Turner walks up and says he's about ready to introduce Corey and Sean, and Corey complains that no, they're not going on. They requested that they had fresh hand carved turkey, and they can't use this great Spinal Tap reference. I don't think I knew, because I don't think i'd seen Spinal Tap yet. I know that I didn't watch Waiting for Guffman until Ben took me to his house, so we had to have been able to drive, so we must have been sixteen when I finally saw Gouffman. And I don't think because you grew up with Spinal Tap right where like you always quoted it. But I don't think I saw it until after I saw Gouffman, so I don't think I would have gotten this reference. But I seen both those movies and I didn't pick it up. Pick up on it now? Is what's the reference? The bit in Spinal Tap is where's he's complaining? You know? I mean, because it's playing on the old trope of like the rock stars who are super prissy and you know, have all these weird little requests and requirements. And he they obviously just put in front of um, what's his name, Christopher guests. They just put a plate of food and said, you know, have problems with this. So it's like, look a look at this look of the turkey. If you got folded and then you got fold to break because it's the bread, well then if you just fold it over. But then if I fold the bread, I'm gonna break the bread. And he's like breaking the bread and he picks up at lit olive. He's like, who's in here? Hello, no one? No this one, there's a little guy in this one. And then who's in here? No one. I just it's brilliant. It's one of the it's just obvious that have problems with the food. And so when Ben started doing this, I was like, oh my god, that's like a great reference that I did not get at all. That's so funny. I didn't get it. Now and now there's a whole new layer. I thought it was just funny on its own. Now, great, it's a great spinal tap reference. It was great, that's funny. Okay, So Turner says, okay, I get it. You guys don't want to play, no problem. He walks out to the mic. He ignores their frustration and just announces the exits are coming to the stage. The curtain is called back to show Koreans Sean eating the turkey. They just like, I'm playing round. Just hilarious. See okay, So going back to like when I got caught with a candy bar. Yeah, I think this was like a visual gag that you know, our show liked. It's like, if you're going to catch somebody, catch them eating and it's funny here it's like turkey in the mouth, candy bar in the thing. It's just that beat of like make it makes it clear, like, oh, these people are unprepared for this, and it's exactly exactly and it is. It's so it's such a great gag to see Ben actually the turkey hanging out of his mouth. You're like holding it to your mouth and h all right, They're gonna go for it. Corey and Sean. They get on stage with their guitars. Corey yells good evening John Adams high. The crowd goes wild. The crowd with Dusty so prominent right in the front. It was so cool to see him again. I was like, where have you been, buddy, It's been a long sign welcome back. The crowd goes wild. Corey keeps yelling it's going pretty well actually, but they aren't performing yet. Sean says good night everybody another time, and then Corey grabs him back on stage, and then we're back in the living room. Alan and his bandmates are all playing good are yeah the tongues the tongues are back that beautiful for guitar harmony. They're singing good loving by the young rascals. In the living room. Amy is jamming along, sitting on the back of the couch, falling in love with Alan all over again. I love. Rusty's just off with everything, keep like trying to get to the microphone. Good God, he's off key, and everyone else is like just falling right back into it. So naturally, you guys know, if Rusty could play guitar, could he in real life? I don't have no idea. I don't know. I don't think so. Could Rusty sing? I don't know. It wouldn't It wouldn't surprise me. But I mean, well, you know, most actors, especially like of older generations. You did sing right, you did you saying you maybe probably dance a little bit. He's a mime. Yeah, but I just also later years, so he probably dance. I mean because he was a sure leader for years, so I'm sure he could dance. Yeah, but I just I couldn't, you know, because just going in to try to love good love and love my god, it was so funny. Oh man, it was. Yeah, it's so funny. And I really truly cannot get over the side of four guitars. It's just I want a band with four guitars. I just I want it. I wonder how nobody said maybe when you could put the guitar down and just strumming the same, Yes, like chords. It's not like anybody's leads doing something different. No, no, get a banjo in there, get something. Guy could all play multiple instruments, like we know Mickey could at least drum. So it's you know, I'm sure they all did. I'm sure that in front of a piano or drum that they'll figure it out. Musicians will figure it out. Yeah. Yeah, Well Alan is way off key and he's not playing very well. And then we go back to the school dance, Corey and Sean are standing on stage while they get universally booed. Corey asks a girl in the audience what her name is. Yeah, this is the line. Okay, that's what I was the line. Well, do you remember how that came about? No, because up until show night it was you suck, and we thought that was the funniest thing in the world because it would be like how they been doing you suck and it was. We thought it was great. And ABC came in and went, you can't do that, and we were all like, you can't change that. We've been laughing all week and they're like, no, you can't do it. So it became you stink. Right as we were shooting it. It was you suck all week long, which was the funniest thing in the world. So then changing it to you stink, we were all bummed. You stink. It's such a great I mean, such a funny read. I love it. You stink so good. So Corey starts singing a song for Sonya and he sings her name as the name game Sonya, Sonya Bobonia. Everyone is just groans thinks it's horrible. Topanga kind of holds back for a minute, like, oh, what am I gonna do? And Sean tells him to drive home safely, and then we're in the Matthews living room. The band is happy about their performance as they leave, and they invite Alan to play with them again next week and Alan says, yeah, yeah, I might be there. Get out. I just get out. He closes the door, and after they're gone, Alan says they weren't they they were good, but he wasn't good at all. And he says, what happened? I used to be good? And Amy says, well, honey, with love and respect, you were never very good. And she loved him because he was the full package. It didn't really matter that he couldn't play, and that's news to him. He makes him feel a little cheap. I yeh, feel cheap like me now I find out you like me for me? I thought you liked me for my my musical talent. Now you like me. I love that line. I definitely that way. You know. I've had this moment with my wife on some version where I'm like, but you like me because of this outfit or this guay like no, you know, but some I just loved it. The complexity of that. Yeah, the idea that, like some you have some characteristic that everybody can't help but find attractive, only then to be like, I didn't care about that. Yeah. So we're back at the school dance and says at one point he heard the audience chanting the exits exits, and Corey says, that's what they were looking for, a way out. Well, that's why they were doing it now, but now you knew it was coming on. Yeah, So Corey mimics what Poene will sound like when he eventually gives them a speech of disappointment. And then mister Phoenie comes over and he actually just laughs at fast best such but such a Michael Jacob's reading straight up, Michael read Yep, absolutely what mister Turner says. If they don't show up for class on Monday, he'll understand, which he's got to get pretty good, so he'll be fine. He'll be fine. Tony's head is protected. Everybody. This was this was there's a this is the take that Tony gives where he just like gives that side. Yeah, I understand. It's a call back to what was the other line where he did almost the exact same move where he was like, um, oh my god, I commented on it at the time because we used to quote it. Oh no, it's gonna kill me. But I love that when he oh, you smell good, that's it, Yeah, you smell good. Yeah, he's got that kind of start. He's got that like dreaming, like I'm gonna say this thing, but I'm just gonna walk away. Such a great read. You smell good, Love you smell good? Yeah. Um. So, as Corey and Sean leave, Topanga didn't end up going with her date to the Oyster House because she wanted to watch Corey. She didn't think that their performance was so bad. She says exactly the same thing that Amy says that, Yeah, I didn't like the n word package did the word package. It's like it would have been fine if she just didn't repeat that. It's like so on the nose, like I'm going to have the scene that your parents just had. It's like, no, just don't say the word package and we would have gotten it, you know, but they really just pounded. I agree with you, you're right. I actually thought the whole thing shouldn't have been the same, that she could have had the same, the same idea that no, you know, you looked sweet or you know, it's so like I liked that. But you're right, even if they just didn't say the word package take away the the other thing. You were so cute up there with your little guitar. Yeah, everything else could have been verbatim, but packages. Yeah, it was like maybe one step too far. But I still like the feeling. I still like the yeah, and the idea that the way Amy fell for Alan is just a little bit of a similar feeling that to Panga's having for Corey Um. And since neither of neither of them got to actually dance tonight, Corey asks to Panga to dance and he pops in the Jojo Man and Brother B tape that sings the name game with Phoene's name. So here's what I remember about this, and I could be wrong. I think one of the guys that was actually in the band, in Corey's band, who doesn't sing that like you just poses it wasn't him. I can't remember which one it was, But we recorded this whole thing on stage, yes, and one of the actors who was on the show the whole week is the voice of the person it has to because they don't get an extra credit there's no credit, so it has to be one of our actors. One of them was singing that and they boomed it and they recorded the whole thing, and it's George Feeney. It was Bill going like George Feeney. Like we recorded all that there on stageybody or is it probably maybe remember it? It was one. I don't know who it was, but one of them, it was doing the whole thing, and we sat there and watched them record this entire thing after, you know, before the show was over. I think we did it on Wednesday. So they recorded the attack, so then they played it back with the audience. But we we recorded that on stage while we're doing one of the actors on the stage. That's what I remember. Well, I don't remember that at all. I remember doing it's setting the whole thing, yep. So then our tag is that we are in the Matthews living room. Alan and Corey both lie about how great their night and their night of rock stardom went. Alan pretends to be charitable to give the guitar to Corey, but neither of them really want it. Eric walks by and they decided to offer it to him. Eric says, sure, I've been thinking of starting a band. He plays an awesome, super complicated guitar riff and hands it back to the guys. Nah, he says, so great. How many people thought I played guitar? Because it did? Really, I believe you definitely played guitars, Like, no, just faking it. Yeah, it's It's funny though, that the audience applause applause for you, because it almost kills a joke, you know, It's like, yeah, I could tell that your rhythm is slightly thrown off, having a hold for that laugh or from the applause, it was like, yeah, it's a great beat. Is now I have a question, And I don't know if any of you know this by now? Is Lily gone? I think she must be. I think so so every opportunity for her to be in scenes and like basically, yeah, so what was her last one? That's what I'm wondering. What was the last time we saw her? Was when she was dressed as the devil? Can't be? Is that true? It might be It might be that she was wished him off the show. Yeah right, So I'm sure they didn't do it on purpose, but I think she's she's gone, right, I think so, I think, I don't. I don't know that we see her again, but I also don't know.
