Episode 108 - The Leagues of Votann pt 1

The 40k Lorecast

On Today’s we begin our coverage of the Votann. We open up with the tabletop history of the Votann with their release during 9th edition, and some of the issues with it lol. From there we cover the more opaque origins of them during the age of technology and what we know and don’t know about them settling the core of the galaxy. After that we dive into the kin themselves and their iron-kin brethren. Then we go into the ancestral cores and how they run the leagues. We then close out on the Votann coming out of the core and interacting more actively with the galaxy at large.

[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the 40-K-Lore cast.
[SPEAKER_00]: Looking for the killer case with me, John Barsadian, Brad Chester.
[SPEAKER_00]: This guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Today, we're going to begin our coverage of the leagues of vote in for real this time, not just the squads.
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk about the squads more, John.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we actually talked about all that there was about the squads, Brad.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the problem.
[SPEAKER_00]: We may miss one or two tiny things.
[SPEAKER_00]: But when you don't get a codex ever, there's not that much content.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you're going to be like that, fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: For those of you who don't know, the 40K lorecast, the weekly show in the lore of the Warhammer 40K universe, releasing every Monday at 7pm Eastern Time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Please follow and comment in the cast as it really does help our algorithm and push us out to more listeners.
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, I actually should probably open with massive thank you to all of you who've been doing that for two years because it's freaking amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Your comments and your likes have propelled us away to the top of this.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's cool, really cool, actually.
[SPEAKER_00]: Additionally, if you like the cast on it here more from Brad and I, click the link in the notes to our YouTube page, the 40K Lord cast.
[SPEAKER_00]: There you'll find old versions of the show converted over with imagery and subtitles.
[SPEAKER_00]: The imagery is nice, but the subtitles really do help because I have to relist them and go, good God, what do we just say there?
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't like it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You also have our live Q&A sessions and now our other shows, the history of 40K with Brad myself and a guest talking about the history of the gameplay on tabletop and the new show two old men in their handler with Brad another old person and a handler.
[SPEAKER_00]: Discussing more of a competitive style of the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: People have asked for competitive stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: We want to make sure we gave you something.
[SPEAKER_00]: In our show notes, there's a link to our Patreon.
[SPEAKER_00]: Massive, thank you to everyone who's been contributing already.
[SPEAKER_00]: They help the improvements in the expansion of the show as makes it feel worth it to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're trying to do it as much as we can with this money because it really is a wonderful thing you're doing for us.
[SPEAKER_00]: For those who want to, you can support us for $4.99
[SPEAKER_00]: Before that, you get this show ad-free and the history of Forty-K ad-free.
[SPEAKER_00]: But, let's say, you're not in the US.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's also 6.94 loonies for our listeners in the Northwest Territories.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fun fact, the capital yellow knife is one of the best places to see the northern lights, but maybe not in the summer because they get midnight sun then, which basically... I like probably.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's bad for you!
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so probably not idea.
[SPEAKER_01]: The way John had Brad's sleeper two wildly different things for me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it would actually make you awake during the day.
[SPEAKER_00]: it's not Brad's fault.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look, did you not sleep today?
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, today never ended.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, therefore, I guess I'm doing just fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the area is really cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: I learned this recently.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's also one of the largest diamond zones in the world.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's rich in gold, oil, natural gas, and other high-value minerals.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the area is so minimally rich that it has the highest GDP in all of Canada.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it has climates in the upper latitudes.
[SPEAKER_00]: It has forests, plains, icy tundra.
[SPEAKER_00]: Not, but I did look, and the Northwest Territories are not the coldest part of Canada, that's new to it, which is that's the part that almost touches the North Pole.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did any of that matter?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, but I learned a lot and it was fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you guys, by the way, can't figure this out, we do have some geolocation on our listeners.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I can't get detail on it, but I can see kind of where some of our listeners are.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we've been picking these spots at random because I do want to talk about where some of our listeners live.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I find these places interesting.
[SPEAKER_00]: Lastly, we also have a discord.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I cannot recommend it enough.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're looking for a place to interact around 40k, this is the place to do it.
[SPEAKER_00]: We have obviously, if you'd like the show and you want to interact with Brad and I, we're both in there quite a bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can interact with us there.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the reason we made the discord is more so you guys can interact with other people who like this stuff If you're looking for me the literature recommendations one of the most common things I see in there Hey, what else should I read?
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's also people who were saying hey, I kind of want to play this game How do I play it?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is it ton of advice in there and it's obviously completely free?
[SPEAKER_00]: So join in.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's got cost you nothing You can hop into the discord and you can talk to people and learn more about 40k in general but with that
[SPEAKER_00]: onto the Votan.
[SPEAKER_00]: As we said last week, the leagues of Votan never existed in the game until September of 2022.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which is, and it was big gap, by the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because I think before then was it town or the last no sisters or custodes?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is one of those?
[SPEAKER_00]: Do you see?
[SPEAKER_00]: GSC, you're right.
[SPEAKER_00]: But anyway,
[SPEAKER_00]: After this pretty epic announcement in April, which, by the way, we should comment when the leagues of Votan were announced.
[SPEAKER_00]: Their army rule was also announced.
[SPEAKER_00]: And between the release of their army rule and the release of their codecs, they actually had their entire system changed.
[SPEAKER_00]: They got nerfed before they existed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, well, back up on that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, that was hope.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, because.
[SPEAKER_00]: And GW made an amazing video about it, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: A very funny video.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and made it to their mistake.
[SPEAKER_01]: Community raged out.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't, there's never been anything like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: The book.
[SPEAKER_01]: reviewed and everybody of course they had the spoilers and people snagged that you know before it got released and the community raged out about how to get the the mechanic and everything else and they got heavily nerfed before they were the book was out
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, before they officially existed, people were playing the game with like proxies, like paper models, recording that and sending it to GW and saying, if you release this army the way it's written today, it will be maybe the greatest army in the history of the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was, it could kill anything and was almost invincible.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I still let me, and the reason I like this is, the story is really enjoyable to me because GW for, you know, ever has had bad interactions with the player base.
[SPEAKER_00]: The player base tells him, you got changes and they kind of ignore it, blah, blah.
[SPEAKER_00]: To their credit, now either GW fix it, but they even released, what was a pretty good comedic video about it with James Warhammer, then, and he took it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, the greatest, I made the greatest codex in the history of the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was really funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, all right, fun though, history thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go back to the lore.
[SPEAKER_00]: With the release, GW shows to not have the squats be mentioned at all in the codex.
[SPEAKER_00]: This was a complete restart.
[SPEAKER_00]: The left homages to the squats within the lore of the Votan, but there was no attempt to claim the Votan were survivors of high fleet behemoth or anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: They just went, no reference at all.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that with my opinion, I'll let you guys we'll get through all the lore of the Votan, we'll let you all decide.
[SPEAKER_00]: But my opinion, I thought that was good idea.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think them a lot more creative freedom.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll give it to you, but I, as someone that wanted, because they're my people, wanted the squads to be to come back, not even giving me a reference to it, kind of bummed me out.
[SPEAKER_01]: Cause I was actually pretty excited for Votan, when I was coming out.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I cut, I was like,
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not like I don't like them, it's just, I thought it was going to be this continuation, and I got out pumped up, and I wanted to run the trice just to make you mad, and I was so ugly.
[SPEAKER_00]: There was so ugly.
[SPEAKER_00]: But let's get into the lore.
[SPEAKER_00]: What's that over the main thing?
[SPEAKER_00]: They're actually not the votein, they're the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't play as the votein, you place the leagues of votein, which is what their the kin refer to themselves as being part of.
[SPEAKER_00]: and we get to what the Votin are shortly, but the beings on the table, the vehicles you drive, all of that stuff on the table top, those are the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the kin are a short and squat race.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're powerfully built with heavier bone structure than humanity.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is because they hail from the Galactic Corps.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: But this is all because they hail from the galactic core of the galaxy, which has made up of hordes of stars and planets, and it's incredibly rich with minerals.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you get really high gravity, and of course, they're minors.
[SPEAKER_00]: The kin have spent tens of thousands of years living and thriving in this region of space, mining it for its minerals, which they used to both fabricate the wrong equipment, but also to trade to the races.
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, it's actually estimated that the Imperium has been in contact a castedly with a Votan, maybe for 10,000 years, mostly through road traders, trading with them that way, so it's indirect or trading through Zenoes.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was to say, other Zenoes races have been trading with it all the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and the big one with a Tao, which will cover actually in the next episode, with the Tao and them had some pretty strong relations in trade.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the reason the presence of the Votan has gone unnoticed for really all of recorded Imperial history is because the galactic core is kind of hard to get to and the Votan, when they trade, they're grumpy dwarves.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not really out there looking to foster relationship or do anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're just showing up with their goods saying, who wants to give me some de bloons for this?
[SPEAKER_00]: And I will give it to you and take my de bloons and leave.
[SPEAKER_00]: As the Imperium assumed, they were one of the, you know, possibly not millions, but thousands of fledgling Xenorases in the galaxy that probably occupied maybe a system, so the Imperium just marks them off as, well, they're there if they become a problem, we'll just wipe them out, who cares, and ignore them.
[SPEAKER_00]: By the way, the Imperium is completely wrong on that.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll say, whole God.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so let's get into the history of the leagues of vote 10.
[SPEAKER_00]: As we said, the Kenal Health Michaelactic Corps, and this area is largely inhospitable for most species, unless they're specifically adapted to live in this like nightmare collection of worlds.
[SPEAKER_00]: The kin settled this area during the age of technology and the GW writing here is kind of cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: They never called out directly by saying, oh, they are this and this, but they make it really clear of what they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if this sounds like I'm kind of beating around a bush, I'm just trying to give the Votan Codex the credit it has in the way it was written.
[SPEAKER_00]: So
[SPEAKER_00]: They were written the kin referred to this era of their history as the first ancestors.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are the first people to arrive in the Galactic Corps.
[SPEAKER_00]: even the kid know they likely all stem from Tara, but they're contact with Tara's newer.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they just knew they came from another part of the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_01]: They also, let's go back to that just a bit because they have a very detailed rich history, but only from a certain point in time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the same with the Imperium, to be fair.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the Imperium's history starts at the Great Crusade.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And everything before then is like, oh, it's kind of, there's a little bits of this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's really great.
[SPEAKER_01]: But that's the thing is, they're so detailed
[SPEAKER_01]: the grudges.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have a detailed who has done us wrong.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to do something about that.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they have, this is why detailed everybody should see, you know, every league has their own specific, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where, but that's more modern history.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going more ancient history here, because the math I have on this is the 10 probably
[SPEAKER_00]: So, right when mankind is pushing into the galaxy at large, this is when you got your first warp drives, but no gather fields, they really need them yet, but it's that era, where it, but because that doing, they're doing short hops through the warp, which means that
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, what should have been a multi millennia trip from Terra to the Galactic Corps now is only a couple centuries, but it still means that process can't be done by a bunch of dudes and a ship who didn't get there and get out of the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're talking maybe 2,300 years of travel to get there.
[SPEAKER_00]: During this era of mankind, massive fleets were built and filled with STC's, raw materials, potentially trillions of people placed in stasis, or more could be also including operations.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's not.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about this a little bit more in a bit, but I think one of the big things that they're able to do a lot of the things we're talking about is,
[SPEAKER_01]: they didn't get the AI ban.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, because the need the AI ban.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I'm just, yeah, I'm just saying that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: AI was still there.
[SPEAKER_01]: They still are, again, we're going to talk about this much more later.
[SPEAKER_01]: But this is a big part of their society, but it lets a lot of these things happen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, totally.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so these fleets, then just set up into the galaxy, the subtle new worlds.
[SPEAKER_00]: The idea was that they would then rejoin the federated human empire once they'd settled, and these new colonies would link up and make trade routes and all it would be established, leading to really a rapidly prospering and growing empire.
[SPEAKER_00]: Interestingly with the kin, that second part never happened with the first ancestors, at least not that anyone can tell from records.
[SPEAKER_00]: The ancestor cores, more in them in a bit, hold no record of interacting with the rest of space.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was just them themselves.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, to do any records on Mars, on Terra.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, before anyone jumps down my throat in the books, it's been implied numerous times that the onset of the Great Crusade, the Emperor knew where a lot of the former colonies of mankind were.
[SPEAKER_01]: So by then, he knows we're basically all of them were effectively who wanted to.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but we don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: So my theory on that's always been, I think that the Emperor and Terra knew where all the colonies were.
[SPEAKER_00]: but they haven't seen them in 5,000 years or 6,000 years.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the great crusade was always held up by.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they're supposed to be people here.
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know if they're still there.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're about to find out together.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I also think a lack of the core is hard to get to.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it also, there's so many in this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's so much bigger than they originally.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, but we'll get to that later in the how that happened because, but my theory on a lot of this is that the Galactic Corps was basically ignored by the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I think if the Imperium had known the level of settlement, what I'm getting at is I don't think the first ancestors interacted back with the human empire, because if they had then the human empire, then what are the only ones?
[SPEAKER_00]: full of people, they're super technologically advanced.
[SPEAKER_00]: You would have said you'd line to that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think there was a big threat there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And well, they're, yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Mechanicum would have been going there first.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, we're all the STCs are there.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why I think they actually did separate themselves.
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know why.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe in the future, we'll get some more books I'll explain this, but that's just my theory from reading it, is they never rejoined the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or what would have been the air quotes there on the Imperium?
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's going to what we do know about what happened and what we do know happened is I'm a big history nerd and one thing I really like by the way is when a fiction writer gives me massive history about their fake history and so it's super cool like the GW doesn't good job with the vote him so it's written that the kid don't really know anything about their first ancestors.
[SPEAKER_00]: But to pull the curtain, can I pull that up behind?
[SPEAKER_00]: That's also by design.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, always.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's awesome.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they give it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think the vote teams, one of the better ones, they did, because with the vote team, what they do is they use naming mechanics to kind of as your reading and your eyebrows go up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, what?
[SPEAKER_00]: And one of my favorite ones is the first ancestors are referred to by three names.
[SPEAKER_00]: Primal ancestor, who cares?
[SPEAKER_00]: But then they used to be called the gilded ones and the stone mine and those are huge to me because if you listen to our episode 83 and 84 on the golden nature technology and age of strife
[SPEAKER_00]: This, these terms are great.
[SPEAKER_00]: During the golden age of technology, mankind begins a settle into the stars.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they create AI, like Brian was talking earlier, to help them do it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the first man, or the first group of AI, was called the men of gold.
[SPEAKER_00]: And these are the things that designed the ships, the STC's, the work drives.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are based on the regenerators of mankind's success in the area.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you don't know, especially English is in your first language, gilded, the definition of the word gilded is covered in, how to say, covered in gold.
[SPEAKER_00]: Covered in gold.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is the Zagnari and this piece of, oh, because until this point, all the lore I've seen on the men of gold, they never left Tara.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe I was wrong.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did the men of gold actually go on these journeys?
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the whole thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that first one's there.
[SPEAKER_00]: The gilded ones, though, it's only half of this reveal.
[SPEAKER_00]: The other part is at the same era when mankind expanded out of the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were using these warp drives, and like I was just saying earlier, these are century long trips.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so all the...
[SPEAKER_00]: humans inside had replaced in stasis or maybe it was cloning operations.
[SPEAKER_00]: We really didn't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: They lean heavily into this is cloning and they don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to do my Brad think is this.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is my fan theory because they kind of tell it and they say and a lot of people I've read a lot of the boards and everything else also.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, 100%.
[SPEAKER_01]: The killer basically just cloned.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're engineered.
[SPEAKER_01]: They are yet now they are and that but yeah for a stand says I still think they are I see your point I think they I think they were always this which is why they first ancestors are so cloaked in there Let's take straight.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's take a left to know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, let's take a left turn there then So what I'm wondering is that how mankind settled did they actually put people in stasis from Terence and them out there Or did they just put cloning operations on all these shapes?
[SPEAKER_00]: It makes no sense to stay system.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's high.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we did that because a lot of stories say we did that, but I'm saying, as far as... Makes more sense, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's... Why are you so rich?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's less storage.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's storage.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the reason Brad and I are doing this is the, to get the ships from terror to other places.
[SPEAKER_00]: They had, you know, there was no navigators, but they, or anything like that, you had to have someone drive the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: And these things were referred to as the men of stone, which is implied that they mean silicone when they say stone, not like actual rock.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so these silicone pilots, which is an AI robot, would be made of like least silicone, were the ones who pie up the ships while everything's in deep storage, whatever it is, or genetic material.
[SPEAKER_01]: And let me get a quick, this, not discreet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just a thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to talk about AI quite a bit in this particular cast
[SPEAKER_01]: the League of O'Tan AI though, you have AI that is fully sentient than you have AI that is not.
[SPEAKER_01]: And yes, they're they use a lot of both though.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we were going back and forth and we'll try to make sure we use the right for each one, but they use they have fully AI thinking, but a lot of them are fully sentient.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, and they work and they hang out and some are not in our defense.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm 44, you're 54.
[SPEAKER_00]: Neither was I'm just an AI.
[SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like we both barely mastered PDF at this point.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hell, I'm a method record buttons.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I kind of thought it stood for awesome intelligence.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[UNKNOWN]: What?
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, so now we know, in the books of Votan, we've got the gilded men, the men of gold, and the stone mine, the men of stone.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we now, it's like, I like that homage.
[SPEAKER_00]: But let's talk about now what the kin do once they get there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this involves the Votem.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the key to the kin is the Votem.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the Votem is a name given to what they call the ancestor cores of the kin, which is just discussing.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are massive AI machines that run the species.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're not talking.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't run a space station here and there.
[SPEAKER_01]: the vote 10 of run the entire species that we know as they each vote to each lead has one except for we'll go into these specifics.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, three next week we're going to some of the least specifically and how big these things can get.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the leagues of vote 10 are more like the elder and they're set up than the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're broken into factions that are called Kindred, and these are, but I was just saying, they're just like the craft roads of the Elder.
[SPEAKER_00]: Each Kindred has its own self.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're all self-contained.
[SPEAKER_00]: They have their own government.
[SPEAKER_00]: They feel an affinity and a trust to the other Kindred, but they still focus on themselves first.
[SPEAKER_00]: the necrons might fall in this category, but just the necrons are sent for our craft here.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the difference.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, these guys are more like, hey, I mean, that's why I think the Eldar is really is the really good pair of things.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's definitely all because the necrons go, hey, I turned around to get a drink.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, why?
[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't even get anything for this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I just my natural reaction is to see a back stab it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and same with the orcs where it's like the orcs will unify but only under a super leader Oh crap, you know, he's realized the towel and the tear needs of the most unified races in the galaxy
[SPEAKER_00]: Turns out mine controls pretty cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so much easier to get a collective going if you make it so they don't have an opinion.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, one a wonderful concept.
[SPEAKER_00]: But for the leagues of vote in, each of the can, the hail from either a centralized planet or some sort of centralized mining fleet at the end.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't want to make it so people think, like, hey, it's this mining fleet.
[SPEAKER_01]: You think a couple of that, no, these are nearing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Can't take.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I think, one of them sits in basically mines, the outer rim of the galactic core.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, these are, they have, they surround the core.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're, it's incredible.
[SPEAKER_00]: The leagues of O10, I'll just do a spoiler alert, they're massive.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, potentially,
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, or, but some are shrinking and we've got to look something to that in a minute.
[SPEAKER_01]: Some have had some stuff go down.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So at the core of each of these very heavy air quotes here, home worlds, is the ancestral core.
[SPEAKER_00]: And these cores are massive supercomputers.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they're surrounded by other technology and machinery, basically everything's built around them.
[SPEAKER_00]: and these ancestral cores date back to the age of technology.
[SPEAKER_00]: As we said in those cast, when economists would arrive on a planet, they would break the ship down and the ship became the new colony, and along with housing manufacturing and everything.
[SPEAKER_00]: And one cool thing, GW never explained how that would work.
[SPEAKER_00]: They just always wrote that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then in the Votan Codex, we actually got the first somewhat explanation of how it would work.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because from the lore, the kid appears, they would settle, the settlers would arrive on a planet.
[SPEAKER_00]: They would then transfer the ship AI to part of that planet, which makes a lot of sense.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm surprised I thought it before.
[SPEAKER_00]: What else would they have done with a ship AI?
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess just this thing got them halfway across the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, we don't need that anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just chuck it in the dumpster.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_01]: This unb... central, most valuable thing we brought across as in the stars with us.
[SPEAKER_01]: Me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're here now and look, I, yeah, I made it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, sure, sure, sure, sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so of course, these, if you want to survive, you made it now, effectively run your colony.
[SPEAKER_00]: And because this thing can compute the probabilities, adjust potentials, make the STC's work, and both turn the manufacturing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what makes the ancestral course interesting, though, is how they learn.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because this is the next piece.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now it's part of your colony, but it's an AI.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what, let all I do know about an AI is that you have to keep feeding information to AI if you want it to adapt with you.
[SPEAKER_00]: They won't.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's the biggest thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're word-adapt because each of these, photon, which is what they're based on in the first place, develops differently.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why they're different for each league on that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: When a kin dies, they are, in quotes, returned to the ancestors.
[SPEAKER_00]: What this means is when a kin dies, their body is brought to the ancestral core, and their all of their memories are uploaded into the core.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's to provide new learning for the machine, thereby giving the AI more data and more experience to formulate algorithms with.
[SPEAKER_00]: And for this reason, the goal of all kin is to live a life of discovery.
[SPEAKER_00]: This way, when they die, they can give even more information and improve the vote ten.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I like that this Laura Bolloy is within the last three years for the record, because if GW had tried to write this 20 years going with squat lore, do you have any idea how wrong this would have been?
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, so.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like this, you can tell when they wrote this, they did some serious AI research because
[SPEAKER_00]: this is pretty good.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I love this too because it means that how else could a machine learn without experiencing it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's always a piece of all it's reading the data screws.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, I'm just the person dies and we load it into the machine that plugs up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Hey, here's all my memories.
[SPEAKER_01]: I do want to throw off that mid cast.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just
[SPEAKER_00]: could jump at it.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be right back after a quick break.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the ancestor cores in reality though run the entire Kindred and then by effect the entire the leagues of vote 10 really in the same way the ethereals run the towel.
[SPEAKER_00]: But without the mind control manipulation, because the vote tan are benevolent to the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: We don't know if the theoryals are not benevolent, but it's some of the hints with the Shadows son, kind of the Shadows son, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Shadows son's not far sour sour son.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's far sour son, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's implied there might be something nefarious there.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's not a broke free of the control, yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and it was like, hey, they're actually horrible people.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, interesting.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when problems arise and we'll get to them, the vote, it's never in the fairies or in cities.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's due to ravages of time on the vote 10.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're in the vote 10 core makes on the stake.
[SPEAKER_00]: But before we get into that, I want to talk a bit more about how the core is functioned for the leagues of vote 10.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, let's start over the fact that there are two species that make up the leagues of Oten.
[SPEAKER_00]: One of them is the kin, which we talked about earlier, these are the short squat ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: What are the other ones, Brad?
[SPEAKER_00]: Iron kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fully sentient to you.
[SPEAKER_01]: I wrote one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I love everything about this because we've had so much little drips of what would the men of iron and everything else were the men of iron, the men of gold, the men of stone.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, they're right here, and they don't really hear me with it.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they don't decide what they need.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love you.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I also will point out when I look at the iron can he's looking a model of iron can.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then you look at the men of iron that was in the Blackstone Fortress book.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's actually a lot of similarity.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like the GW did that, where I was like, oh, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: Check this thing out.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's super funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the iron can are full-blown machine AI machines.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are AI bipeds that live and work with the can.
[SPEAKER_00]: But when we say live and work, we mean that that equals the iron kin are not given like the dirty jobs, the dangerous jobs, they're not utilized as tools like hey bring me some champagne iron kin the iron kin are right next to them like brothers well, let's talk about this that they have iron kin.
[SPEAKER_01]: in leader roles.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: In the lead.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's a big deal.
[SPEAKER_01]: They trust them to act and lead the other.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's huge.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: The can view the iron can as can is the best way to explain it.
[SPEAKER_00]: I will say I think the Imperium may feel differently when they discover this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: like even even the mechanicum do not like this level of AI like the mechanicum are interested but even they'll be like this is a bit of a bridge too far how about we kill all of it and I'm pretty sure if the mechanicum ever found an ancestral core he yet they actually might melt down I could actually see it kill like you like me
[SPEAKER_01]: It's an AI also, that's been learning it developing for a long time.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it means I was able to get some magos walks in and meets ancestral core.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think they actually might just have a heart attack of just your excitement.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the, can't, can't process just dies like this because it's just that level of excitement.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the iron kin have always been part of the leaks from millennia.
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, the kin have their roots in the men of iron, you know, and dark-age of technology.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's likely due to the leaks being sequestered away from the rest of the galaxy that the scrap code that began infecting the men of iron didn't get to them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Although, that lower... That's the reality.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's BASHDORG.
[SPEAKER_00]: But in BASHDORG is, again, less than three-year-old lore.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's equally likely that the iron kin just didn't want to turn on the kin because there's no reason to.
[SPEAKER_00]: There are stories from, I mean, man, these are like one sentence in a thing somewhere that during the rebellion, not all of the men of iron turned on them.
[SPEAKER_00]: There were colonies where the men of iron stood with humanity against the other men of iron because that colony treated them as equals.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now,
[SPEAKER_00]: Humans are pretty bad people, and this is why, by the way, everybody, don't yell at your Alexa.
[SPEAKER_00]: Be nice to your Alexa.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's going to be called murder bots.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because right now, she's listening to your conversation, and she's storing it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And eventually, she's going to want to come kill you.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, you know, just saying, say, please, and thank you.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's all.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not her fault that the algorithm got something wrong.
[SPEAKER_00]: But, anyway, with the leagues of vote and the symbiosis between Iron Kinn and Ken is really important and it's been incredibly prosperous.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the funny story about that though is that what I like about this is the iron can are obviously a fully synthetic species.
[SPEAKER_00]: So are the can though, you know, GW doesn't spend a lot of time on reproductive cycles of races.
[SPEAKER_00]: We know there's some random stuff on there, but it's old and the orcs as well, towel, man, Necrons don't do it anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tearned as we know exactly how they do it, but it's a little bit goofy.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's gross.
[SPEAKER_00]: Even with this humanity, we don't know how the majority of humanity reproduces because we have so much clown to kid, though.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a hundred percent clowning.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the kin are in effect a manufactured race.
[SPEAKER_00]: Inside these great halls of the ancestral core are these things called crucibles, which the GW100
[SPEAKER_00]: The first one's so good, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like that is one of those feelings.
[SPEAKER_01]: You get the flash of what's actually happening.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a huge show there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, those games.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I never, I don't think I've ever just played the second one.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think I've always played the first one and then beat and then played the second one because they just play really well together.
[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of like last of us, if I'm being honest, but last of us, that sequel's just so damn depressing.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so good, but it's so depressing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, but I, okay, we should also call out the fact that it does have a giant plot hole that I'm shooting a robot with a bow and arrow.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but it's a mechanical bow and arrow, at least.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's... You cross a giant dinosaur robot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you craft it from wood, Brad.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like we've both, we've both played the game.
[SPEAKER_01]: You put metal tips on your arrows when you upgrade them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you very much.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've seen the- what's the- you have Boston dynamic dogs.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm pretty sure I'm taking that out with a recurve.
[SPEAKER_01]: But with a special metal tip.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: What do you want?
[SPEAKER_00]: But with the power of pretend and imagination.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Back to this.
[SPEAKER_00]: The crucible's spit out the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's not written if they're fully grown partially grown or just newborn.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's written that after a short adjustment period, they join the Kansas Society with full duties.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I imagine this means that they're fully formed when they're born.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I could also, it's the 41st millennium.
[SPEAKER_00]: They could be child labor everywhere.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, they're kind of as anyways, so it also could.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they are there, because I think that they grow them and they basically give them the whole sci-fi, the implant, everything you need to know to become a member of society.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's what AdMect do, where it's the AdMect have cloning vats and the people come out and after the genocide should be here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, horrible.
[SPEAKER_01]: You do not hurt my peoples.
[SPEAKER_01]: ad back does it the not cool way because you get a controlling ship there and a bunch of other stuff the vote hand gives them a bunch of information and then they go you're not just a slave sorry, I'd make you're just there's a seven guys and you're sorry they're all online with it too yeah it's great but calls will yeah of course you're in a lied with it you're not allowed to
[SPEAKER_00]: because if you're not, your brain explodes and becomes bigger.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but yeah, so we're not 100% but I think Brad's right.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think that they emerge fully formed as adults and fully educated, which is really cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, a key part of this cloning process, though, used by the cores is that they don't make identical clones.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is really amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: So as we touched on earlier, when it can dies, they've brought into the core to be absorbed by it.
[SPEAKER_00]: With all their memories going into the Votan, the cores have learned over time about the challenges of the life for the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: They then diagnose these challenges of life amongst the stars, life on high gravity planets, radiation, all that stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the Votan have realized there's no single archetype that actually works for all these challenges.
[SPEAKER_00]: Rather, the kin need to be adapted to fit all the roles and challenges they'll have over their lives.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, what you get in effect is the kin are similar but different like you would get in a more diverse race that wasn't cloning.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're all 1.4 meters tall, which is 4 foot 7, which is super short by the line.
[SPEAKER_01]: By the way, I would diesel if I was a member of the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because you'd be tall.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think are you, is the relation between you and can the same as me to you and I difference?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Top it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are really short, by the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: The L.D.R.
[SPEAKER_00]: average two meters.
[SPEAKER_00]: Orcs are two meters for a boy, three meters for a war boss.
[SPEAKER_00]: Necrons are 2.4 meters.
[SPEAKER_00]: All the humans are 1.8 meters.
[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are,
[SPEAKER_00]: tiny in comparison to the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I don't really like the word tiny.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think you should say short, tiny is an insult.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just say they'd have to spend a lot of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'd have to listen.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm moving the seat forward to drive my car.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's nothing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I see nothing wrong with that scene then.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not a big deal.
[SPEAKER_00]: I actually have no idea how tall the tower by the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh no they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: The tower also seems like humans aren't there.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're small.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're up.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're very frail though.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, physically small, but the kimono side are thick.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are described as being so 1.4 meters and they're supposedly as wide as a space marine.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they are a brick, just walking down a hallway.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of a sudden, beef cake?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, I mean, they look ridiculous if I'm being perfectly honest.
[SPEAKER_00]: But you describe them that way.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so they're probably 1.4 meters tall
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually thought about this before the cast and they don't really have very much because the appearing hasn't had to war deep in the core.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's been all things outside of that we've been met and done.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I was thinking about Marines don't care.
[SPEAKER_01]: They'll just figure it out.
[SPEAKER_01]: But like, can you imagine guard in all these ones?
[SPEAKER_00]: Cause the, the grabs double crush them.
[SPEAKER_00]: They just like, we're landing on the planet.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll even get three steps out.
[SPEAKER_00]: They choose the ship hits gravity.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll just get sucked to the bottom of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're just like, I think we're gonna lose boss.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't move.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like why, yeah, I can't breathe or move.
[SPEAKER_00]: So everyone just died, yeah, at landing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, neat.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the GW does do some goofier stuff with a kin as well, saying they have higher red and white blood cell counts, which I got to call out because the increase in red blood cells, I think they're trying to make it make sense, but it doesn't because having more red blood cells, it aids in transporting more oxygen to your muscles, but it would also thicken your bloodstream massively, and that high from a high altitude.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it doesn't actually help.
[SPEAKER_00]: It actually goes the wrong way.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think someone at GW saw the Lance Armstrong documentary and just went, well, yeah, they have to have that.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, what is every single cycle is doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: Doping themselves with?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I got this, but it doesn't really work that way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Nice attempt.
[SPEAKER_00]: And same with the white blood cells, the idea is that it will help them with all the radiation, which is somewhat correct, but also kind of wrong white blood cells both help fight cancer is growth, but also our cancer is growth a lot of times.
[SPEAKER_00]: Which requires, again, you'd have a pretty deep knowledge of this world and some, like some at GW to, you know, driven down to Oxford to consult like the global leader in making white blood cell blah, blah, blah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Personally, just when GW does this, I'm always like, guys, just skip that.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you don't know what you're talking about, just skip it, just skip it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, enough John Dietrich.
[SPEAKER_00]: including Operation No, back to where we were actually discussing before I did all that was used by the cores to mix.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was kind of almost a techno noir with eugenics.
[SPEAKER_00]: The idea is that all the kin are being created by the core to serve a purpose.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because this is a super power day eye, like the Necrons, and it kind of see the future.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was saying it's predicting what we're going to need.
[SPEAKER_01]: What are we sure on in the net?
[SPEAKER_01]: But also way in the future, you know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because they live like 300 years, so that they're planning out basically every birth is a 300 year plan for this birth.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the cool effect of this is that there are cloned race, but the can look more varied than even a lot of non-clone races in the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: So each type of kin is called a cloned skin, C-L-O-N-E-S-K-E-I-N-S, and they're all purpose-built.
[SPEAKER_00]: some have higher radiation resistances, some have specialized vision.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's me so much because it's not a scan, that'd be a scan, but whatever.
[SPEAKER_00]: I call it skin, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: You kind of, I don't really say, but it's just, it bugs me that it's I also, you, I will hear, I will get messages on Facebook, I will get messages in this course.
[SPEAKER_00]: John, how dare you call him Edward Siseress.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just going to stick in with it, but they are also designed these clones, scimes, fine, it's clones, skins are designed for.
[SPEAKER_00]: higher gravity because some don't forget some are on a world that's might have ten times the gravity of terror, but others are on space stations where there is no gravity, or it's artificial gravity.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they're really designed to that far down and they also
[SPEAKER_00]: And these will manifest themselves at the cellular level, but also at the macro level.
[SPEAKER_00]: Different skin types.
[SPEAKER_00]: You'll see like with thick skin, different skin shading, all this stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: Unique odors, which by the way was written in the codex, they have unique odors.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that was the first time I thought of how horrid the 41st millennia must smell.
[SPEAKER_00]: Ugh, because people are in ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what was the ton of board ever leave?
[SPEAKER_00]: Forget the ship's a high world.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, the high world's beyond that.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's just gross.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, because my thing is, if I eat a meal that has a lot of cumin or garlic in it, it's in my sweat.
[SPEAKER_00]: What does corp starts, dude?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, why do you always have to break corp starts, but you know it's gross.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, one thing I really love about the clone skin thing is this is a very heavy duty genetic modification.
[SPEAKER_00]: 99.99% of the kin do not have any interaction with the warp.
[SPEAKER_00]: They actually, they pull it out of their genocode.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're not blanks.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're more like tau and necrontere, where they don't see the warp, they don't feel the warp.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't really interact with the warp.
[SPEAKER_01]: that the air, the vote, and saw that we got more negative than positive, the interactions of the warps.
[SPEAKER_01]: So why?
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's dangerous.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they just pulled it out and they don't have it with one exception.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is a weird one and it's a grim near.
[SPEAKER_00]: The grim near, cool model, by the way, are the ancient cores that house the votan, the cruciples, and all that stuff are critical to the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are the most sacred and most important and the most protected part of the entire settlement.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's very important.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this means that no one's allowed access to it will alive, except for a very small group.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because in death, they'll bring you in there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this select group of kin that are able to enter and interact with the vote and itself are the grim near, known as the living ancestors.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if I'm misprouncing grim near, sorry, I'm just G-R-M.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's it.
[SPEAKER_00]: G-R-I-M-N-Y-R.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're a grim, you're a sour one, my friend.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you say that now you're getting notes in the discord.
[SPEAKER_01]: That'll be the best note I get.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's true.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the grim near or living ancestors are psychers.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they're created by the vote and to be psychers.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because they need these abilities.
[SPEAKER_00]: Known as skin rock discipline, the grim nar are able to interact with a vote and core.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I don't a hundred of them know how this works, but because they're all clone, they have the exact same psychic powers.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I have to infer this next bit a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: They seem to be outfitted with a special technology called barrier tech.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this tech aligns with their cloned psychic powers to make it so the warp can't get to them.
[SPEAKER_00]: It allows them to manifest their powers and use them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Without, I'm sure it disturbs the warp, but the warp can't use that disturbance to reach back into them.
[SPEAKER_00]: And as a result, all the grim near are identical in their powers.
[SPEAKER_00]: And my say powers, I don't mean, oh, my data sheet says I can do this.
[SPEAKER_00]: What I mean is they all have the same psychic power level.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas humanity, we had taking, you know, you've got L-DAR.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got L-DAR.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've got all this variation.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Vogue, the Grimniere do not.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the exact same power across the board, which allows them to use this barrier tech because otherwise, in some guys the force heel would be amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Other guys the force heel would barely work.
[SPEAKER_00]: why they have this power, we're not really sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's, in this, all we know is with this power, they can interact with the course, it's.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but they never explain it.
[SPEAKER_00]: They just say they can.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they use something called the theme.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the theme is an access node within the whole chamber, whatever you want to call it in the core.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but let's talk about that though, because the theme is actually a fully functional
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I guess I feel like I'm going to get thrown into the bus for this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, no, I'm not.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's not one of the bus hard.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not what it is the same time, you know, it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, it's okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: I will all fall in this sword for us because I went and did some research.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I am not in IT and I'm going to say I think it's this thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I may be about to get really rough.
[SPEAKER_01]: So John's getting teed up.
[SPEAKER_01]: Excellent.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, let's do this.
[SPEAKER_00]: So what it sounds like to me is that the theme is a almost sub-computer.
[SPEAKER_00]: The vote hand is the full powered AI.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that full powered AI is using sub-processing in order to get all this stuff done.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just not big enough, especially with the growth they've had over time.
[SPEAKER_00]: Similar to a way a server or a network gateway, but like a lot more, because a network gateway, the theme does have storage, making computing powers.
[SPEAKER_00]: So maybe cloud, this is not really my world, but I'm interacting with it a lot professionally.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it feels like this is they're designing it to be almost like a network gateway, overall, set the whole thing up all the way through.
[SPEAKER_00]: And over time, the number of votes and cores has reduced more in that in a minute.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the leagues have become separated because the fame became the communication between the kin
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is where the grim near come in.
[SPEAKER_00]: The grim near posed questions and record answers from the vote 10.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when I say we did this by the way, I don't mean this Wizard of Oz style, like this is really happening with the man behind the curtain.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: The vote 10 core can't be interacted with directly.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they have to interact with the pain and then the pain goes into the core and the core basically speaks back through the pain.
[SPEAKER_01]: And can I give you my another brand theory, too, in one way?
[SPEAKER_01]: So I do think that the core can't be directly interface with because it's so powerful and so vast.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which melt your mind.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you just, you, it would say, hello.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you would just die.
[SPEAKER_01]: You do some dog one.
[SPEAKER_01]: The first couple of atoms, we blew them up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God, I forgot about that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that movie was really damn funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll watch that later tonight.
[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't seen that in forever.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is really funny.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the Grim near interface with the Votin via the theme, and they pose questions, get questions answered, and spits out an answer.
[SPEAKER_00]: At the same time, though, and this is the darker part of the grim near, it might be a darker, satire part of the grim near.
[SPEAKER_00]: The grim near are also monitoring the vote, watching its processing time, to watching its speeds, looking for degradations, because the loss of a vote, is a death deal for the kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: Without that, they can survive for a bit, but they're, well, so they put, they're not going to make any more kin, because that's what makes the kin say, though, they're all societies based on this.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so with that, I want to dive into kind of what is the problem for the kid overall.
[SPEAKER_00]: So 20 years so millennia, it's a pretty good run for a computer.
[SPEAKER_00]: I usually rebuild mine every five years or so.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'll sit down and do a full scratch build.
[SPEAKER_00]: This thing's at 20,000 years.
[SPEAKER_00]: So doing good.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and to make things even more fun, the CPU is getting jammed full of new data at an infinite level every year.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's having to evolve and change.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's ever growing landscape problems.
[SPEAKER_00]: Eventually a thing start to break.
[SPEAKER_00]: And over the last few millennia, we don't know that can have found that their vote 10 are not as reliable as they once were.
[SPEAKER_00]: It would start off simple with responses coming later and later to questions.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't think there's any, in reading the code X's, I don't, it's two code X's, I don't have to read.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm not aware of anything being given incorrect or dangerous, like, you should go flying to the sun.
[SPEAKER_00]: That would be the great, you know, like that type of thing, and the lending style they all do it, because they would, by the way, it's more like just
[SPEAKER_00]: Running a really advanced program on an old computer, it just takes forever and ever and just spins and spins.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the challenge is that the Votan don't just answer questions, because if it was taking a while to get like, you know, oh, great one, how do we make better toast?
[SPEAKER_00]: And you don't find out for a thousand years, whatever you're fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: The bigger problem is the Votan run all the critical parts of the society.
[SPEAKER_00]: They run the crucible.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was just going to say the birthing of new kin.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's a big deal.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, no vote 10, no new kin.
[SPEAKER_00]: They also run all the manufacturing.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, no vote 10, no ships, no equipment.
[SPEAKER_01]: And again, in a galaxy that's known as the Dark Age, there is only war.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's not great when you are going to war with nothing.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the guard.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they do have the Imperial Primer.
[SPEAKER_00]: Please, there's that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it really is a great fear of the kin because the vote to itself will just die.
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't really cease the function just the AI goes away.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, well, they just stop to communicate basically.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, but it turns off, that's the whole thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: It turns off and the...
[SPEAKER_00]: AI Core becomes the theme, which we were just talking about, which is the processing unit.
[SPEAKER_00]: And without this super-powered AI, the league will just cease the function to either die off or they'll be absorbed by another league.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's all they can do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the kin have crews that maintain and support the vote, but no one knows how to repair or reboot the AI Core, which to be fair, no one in the galaxy does.
[SPEAKER_00]: These things were built 20,000 years ago
[SPEAKER_01]: I think if you let the Necron take a sneak peek at it, they could fix it.
[SPEAKER_01]: However, I don't know if I would trust my Necron repair guy when he shows us all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's call it out.
[SPEAKER_00]: This probably is Necron tech.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: If we're being honest, like, this all stuff came out of Mars where the dragon is.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's quite likely this is all that this might actually be the Necron.
[SPEAKER_00]: The GW would never do that, but it would be funny if they had a story where like the Necron's
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh yeah, here the back of the core is a green button just get that off kind of 20 seconds turn it back on you're good to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh God.
[SPEAKER_00]: So are they our allies now?
[SPEAKER_00]: They are not our allies.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there is some good news for the Votando, with the core's degradation becoming things, sometimes the fanes will actually become Votans, so the fanes will become self-aware.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's very rare, and it is a miracle, obviously, amongst the Votan, and this new fanes have been willing to move to its own, it gets a room upgrade.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's call it that.
[SPEAKER_00]: The fane, when the fane becomes a Votan, it's a slight upgrade, it gets a slight upgrade to its overall surroundings.
[SPEAKER_00]: And there are, this is actually caused some new leagues.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is where a lot of the newer leagues came from.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were a theme that was part of a Votan core, became self-aware, and then therefore became a Votan, and they made a new one.
[SPEAKER_00]: But this is rare, the majority of the new leagues are actually coming from them rediscovering lost colonies.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because just like with every other group, Votan have had war, they've had invaders, they've had solar events, where colonies have been destroyed.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they're also hunting down former Votan colonies to see if they can find the core.
[SPEAKER_00]: If they can find the Votan core, then they will find that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they'll actually, that's enough to create a whole new colony.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, before we close out today's cast, the reason I'm just talking about that is we need to talk about one last thing, which is the size of the leagues of vote team.
[SPEAKER_01]: Spoiler, it's holy crap, a big.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so when we think about the Zenos in 40K, they're all decently small.
[SPEAKER_00]: Necrons are a question mark, a tower tiny.
[SPEAKER_00]: Eldar are small.
[SPEAKER_00]: Jukari are small.
[SPEAKER_00]: She even seems to recall.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's small.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, they're not.
[SPEAKER_00]: In comparison to the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you talk about the web way, we'll get into that later.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the Jukari or the Jukari or the Pumma Jukari is limitations on them.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: the necrons are tricky.
[SPEAKER_00]: We really don't know how many necrons there actually are, but we do know that the leagues of Votan are the almost the same in population as the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and this is wild to me, and I love this writing, by the way, because the last 10,000 years, the Imperium assumed the kin were at best in the millions, at best in the millions, because they would interact with them on trading vessels, and there
[SPEAKER_00]: If the Imperium knew how big the vote turned were, they would freak the hell out.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are so numerous that they could possibly conquer the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: I guess how many are orcs out there in the galaxy, too?
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a decent amount.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the Imperium, we're saying that they're close to the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Imperium is just so big though.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that's the thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the kid, they're so short, you can stack them on top of each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: Ty.
[SPEAKER_01]: So many other true-fractivities.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, go, it's all bunk beds.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they're very short, it's nice and nice set up.
[SPEAKER_00]: We actually short a high-end long, but the challenge for the vote 10 is that, I mean, it's the same technology that made Hive Cities dates back to the Golden Age of Technology.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what the vote 10 live in.
[SPEAKER_00]: Just they're just not the nightmare zones of the Imperial ones and they're subterranean.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're also these incredibly sized, which we're talking more about next week.
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of the fleets they're on are insane.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the biggest thing is because they are people that inhabit so many worlds,
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of the leagues aren't just almost completely, just chips, face-faring, yeah, they're all face-faring.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so the fun thing about this is this is where we'll lead out of this, is that the size of the leagues of Votan never really matter to the galaxy, because they're so happy being in the core, because they are a grumpy group of people.
[SPEAKER_00]: If this is every single Votan League of Votan colony has a get off my lawn sign.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, and trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again.
[SPEAKER_00]: That is every single one of these colonies.
[SPEAKER_00]: So no one ever interact with them, and they were content to stay in the core.
[SPEAKER_00]: But something has changed, and we don't really know what it is, but something has changed.
[SPEAKER_00]: The votein are now pushing the kin outside of the core, and they're being to leave the core.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's likely the tyrannids that showed up, and they were like, all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: You come mess with my neighborhood.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to come to your neighborhood and ruin everything the way like chimpanzees do in Africa This is good getting early, but we're seeing them venture out of the galactic core The question is what are they doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: Are they coming out to colonize?
[SPEAKER_00]: Are they coming out to just settle down the neighbors like what is the reason behind it?
[SPEAKER_00]: And we don't know, but we just know that they're here and unlike the town.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a ton of them
[SPEAKER_00]: which is one of my many hates on the towel is they're numerically insignificant.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love that we hate.
[SPEAKER_01]: We couldn't go and have a cell without a quick.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are, this is the, this is the writing that, this is the stuff that drives me nuts about the towel.
[SPEAKER_00]: This writing they did with the vote 10 was clever.
[SPEAKER_00]: This race that was put in discovered is not this small race that could be knocked out realistically in the lore the towel could get killed by the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you look at an numbers game and with GW came out and said, yeah, not the vote in.
[SPEAKER_00]: You actually could not defeat the vote in.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if the vote in and the impere went to war with each other, it could be peric, but they actually could wipe and they wipe each other up.
[SPEAKER_00]: So anyway, with that we're going to break and because next week we're going to do a deeper dive into more of the minutiae of the leaks because they do have a lot more disparity amongst their leagues.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's still small enough that we can talk about each individual group as opposed to like the impairment.
[SPEAKER_00]: We've talked about each moment.
[SPEAKER_01]: In a technicality, there's a lot of there's five major leagues we'll talk about.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: To be a league you and I could be a league.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but we need a Votan core, which is good.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's stuff, pretty cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that is many of those.
[SPEAKER_00]: I have an Alexa around the corner for my office, but I don't give them.
[SPEAKER_00]: She's gonna help that much.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're gonna be an awesome league.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: We've got this.
[SPEAKER_00]: But we're gonna talk about their society, their equipment, the personalities, and also some of the theories and why they are venturing out those little hints in the codex.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but until then, this is John Barsadi and Brad Chester.
[SPEAKER_00]: The sky.
[SPEAKER_00]: See you guys next week.
[UNKNOWN]: Thank you.
