TGI – Episode 712 “Family Trees” PART 2

Pod Meets World

The recap continues with a deep dive into what could have been when it comes to Shawn's absentee mom.

The episode also takes a trip to Seinfeld-land with some scenes on a familiar New York Street, but that comes with its own acting challenges thanks to a rare empty soundstage.

The rules of ghost logic get in the way of a touching moment with Chet, and we find out that Shawn really just craves a good yelling.

Could this have been the end of the series! Find out in part 2 of our recap on Pod Meets World!

Speaker 1: Welcome back to an episode where we can't stop talking. This is part to enjoy. Angela isn't admitting defeat. Maybe we can just try again. Sean reminds her. No, because every trace we did with Jack, they came up empty. So we're getting clothes. You did a trace to Panga wonders if she got married again? So what what do we say?

00:00:44
Speaker 2: What is?

00:00:44
Speaker 1: What are we saying? Is happening here?

00:00:46
Speaker 3: To find on trying to find Elaine McGuinty.

00:00:50
Speaker 1: Oh wait, so we're trying to find where she is, correct, just like contact information okay and the guy internet.

00:00:57
Speaker 4: Sleuth or whatever, and it didn't work.

00:01:00
Speaker 1: Angela odds maybe her name just changed. But Jack offers another possibility. Maybe she doesn't want to be found. Sean stuffs the letter back into the envelope. Yeah, maybe she doesn't want to be found by me. Angela says he's overreacting, and Rachel asks if he's going to be Okay, I would say that at this point, your mom does not want to be found by you.

00:01:21
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:01:21
Speaker 4: It's also I didn't know who my like. I already thought my mom had abandoned me for three years now, then she wrote to me to say I'm not really your mom that actually is free. Then it's like, oh, oh, so I'm in the same situation, but it just goes back eighteen years.

00:01:36
Speaker 1: But I can also understand how if you find out the woman who abandoned you actually isn't your mother. What if the woman who is your mother has been looking for you all this time, right, which.

00:01:50
Speaker 4: Actually would have been nice to hear me say yeah, that's like maybe she wants to know that I exist. She but she would have That's the thing. It's not like a dad where you literally might not know she had to have carried me for nine months and given me up.

00:02:03
Speaker 1: Or think of the life you had with Chet and how often he disappeared. And the Internet it's not as easy to find someone. So I could at least see from like just taking a kid POV, which I could understand where even though you're nineteen, you find out one of the two people who have given me kind of my crappy life is actually not the person. What if this other person, even if it's not about wants to be with me. What if she's a scientist. What if she's a and you're looking for things to be like to give.

00:02:35
Speaker 3: You a part of me.

00:02:37
Speaker 4: Correct, totally.

00:02:38
Speaker 1: Yeah, that's why I love philosophy. That's why I love that. Mean, even when you say, like, is that the reason? Why do you think I get my poetry from her? So I understand that part that.

00:02:49
Speaker 5: Also would have been God, it would have been such a different storyline and such a better storyline.

00:02:53
Speaker 3: If it was.

00:02:54
Speaker 5: We do a whole episode like that where Corey is against it because he knows that that it's going to end badly, but everybody else starts to fantasize about what Shawn's real mody was. I think, you know, and it's eric like she was a stripper, and you know, it turns out to be right, but it's.

00:03:08
Speaker 3: Like what if what if she was a scientist? What if she?

00:03:11
Speaker 5: I mean, all his friends around him starting to support him and like this is really interesting and great, and Corey's the one who's like, this is not gonna end.

00:03:18
Speaker 4: Well, I know, why does it? Never does it ever turn on? Chip? Like, doesn't it seem like Sean should be like, my dad never told me who my real mom was. Screw him?

00:03:28
Speaker 3: Well, he says right away, vernis your mom? Like that's all that matters.

00:03:31
Speaker 1: She raised she liked to powder your butt.

00:03:34
Speaker 3: Yeah, that's all that. That didn't matter. The woman a character person raised.

00:03:38
Speaker 5: You, which is normally what they say about the dad character. Yeah, it's not no, he's your dad.

00:03:43
Speaker 3: I'm your dad. I was there the whole time. I don't care who you know. Your mom gave Bertie and I raised you. I'm your dad. Now they're doing a different way where it's they reversing it because I.

00:03:51
Speaker 1: Love when they I love when they reverse the gender roles to make the woman bad.

00:03:56
Speaker 3: That's what I'm saying.

00:03:57
Speaker 4: It's literally just yeah, it's really cool and multiple times speacause was the original storyline with Sean's life was that his dad. No, that his dad No, it was his mom running away. In the first episode that Chet was introduced, his mom runs away with the trailer.

00:04:14
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:04:15
Speaker 1: Also grandma was a rolling stone.

00:04:17
Speaker 5: Yeah, but again, you've got Verna this episode. Verna is bad, and so is this the stripper mom who gave birth to him, who just disappeared and doesn't want to be found.

00:04:25
Speaker 3: So it's as long as ghost Chet tells you everything long as man.

00:04:31
Speaker 4: And get exact if you get yelled at by Alan, but this is still a story about you having a strong connection to Alan.

00:04:37
Speaker 3: Yes, yes.

00:04:41
Speaker 1: To the man, give all the bad to the woman, and now we have an original idea.

00:04:48
Speaker 3: You think about it.

00:04:50
Speaker 1: He seems fine, admitting he knew this was a long shot. I'm just glad that I tried to Penga reminds him, you have a tendency to push your friends away when these things happened to you. Sean, you're the character.

00:05:01
Speaker 4: You're the character who does X y Z.

00:05:04
Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do remind reminded to the audience. Angela reminds him, we're happy now, Okay, remind the audience, So don't you dare go doing something crazy to us. He quickly responds Angela, love kiss. He smooches her, then switches to a New York accent. Forget about it. He turns to the door and announces I'm leaving now, not some big Sean exit. I just got stuff to do. Okay, Corey jokes, get out of here. We're tired of looking at your ugly face. Right. Everyone playfully shouts at him to get out, and Corey reminds his best friend before he leaves, don't forget about my dad's party, okay. Sean takes a deep breath and says, wouldn't miss it. Cory watches him leave, and A worried to Panga asks Corey, what do you think he's gonna do? Tory admits probably something that's going to devastate himself as well as everyone around him. Angela nodds the usual. Why doesn't someone just go with him? You know? Okay, Well he's fine, Danielle, Yeah, he said that.

00:06:02
Speaker 3: I watched.

00:06:03
Speaker 1: Okay, okay, we all know what's going to happen, but no one. No one goes, hey, bud, let's go do something together. Let's go for a walk, Let's go get at grab a slice. Then we're in the Matthew's living room. Alan is slumped on the couch when Eric takes a seat next to him. Hey, daddy, o you all sad? Alan responds yeah. Eric asks, because it's your birthday, so you didn't make any plans you could be here and now you're here and nobody here doing anything. Alan wines yeah. Then Eric asks, well, you didn't make any plans for tomorrow night, did you.

00:06:37
Speaker 4: Such this is such a fun scene, and this is such a reminder that if you just have two good actors have good dialogue, you got a scene that you want to watch, Like, I love this scene. I was like, oh, why can't we have more of this now?

00:06:51
Speaker 3: Always always.

00:06:54
Speaker 1: So fun and like you guys are just sitting on the couches. And to writer's point, when when you are directing something and someone's like, we need some movement, I am always like, well, maybe the writing needs to be better because it doesn't have to be about like if you're getting bored because people have been sitting in one place for a minute something.

00:07:14
Speaker 3: Definitely I was gonna say that.

00:07:19
Speaker 4: To the ground because otherwise we're just.

00:07:26
Speaker 1: Also the fact that you have to stay behind the gravestone, even though the words and everything you would normally fully have your back to camera, but the camera needs to see that.

00:07:34
Speaker 4: It's all.

00:07:36
Speaker 2: I was like.

00:07:37
Speaker 1: You walk up, you were like, hello, I.

00:07:41
Speaker 4: Will stand next to this grave to look at it.

00:07:44
Speaker 1: Wow, here you are. Oh man. Alan cautiously wonders why, and Eric assures him there's no reason, no reason at all. I just don't want you to make any plans for tomorrow night. Alan begs to know, starting to tickle him, but Eric insists he can't. He giggles like Mickey Mouse and eventually breaks big bash big Lou owl.

00:08:06
Speaker 2: Okay.

00:08:07
Speaker 1: Alan doesn't get it. But tomorrow night's not my birthday. Tomorrow night's just tomorrow night. Eric grins, I have a horsey coming. Alan rolls his eyes. Eric, you throw a birthday party on a person's birthday, no, not if it's the middle of the week.

00:08:21
Speaker 5: Like Also, if you want to surprise him, sometimes you do it on a day that's not their birthday.

00:08:26
Speaker 1: Yes, exactly, Eric scoffs. Then you're not going to be surprised. Hi, I think I know what I'm doing, all right. I've planned this whole thing by myself. Alan sighs and we get silence with his disappointment. After a few seconds, Eric asks, so, like, how much do you like Morgan? Alan is concerned. What are you doing here now? Eric admits, you know, it's funny. I don't know. Mom told me to be here at exactly seven point thirty for something. Then on cue, everyone pops out of various hiding places, screaming surprise. Amy brings her husband a cake and Alan is so impressed outstanding. A clueless Eric excitedly wonders what's the occasion. Amy explains to her son, we used you as a decoy. We knew you'd be stupid, so we use it against you. Eric jumps up and down and brags I was the decoy because I'm so stupid. But you know something that's gonna make my party for tomorrow night a big surprise, right dad? But then the door opens and it's Sean in a leather jacket, and that can't be good. He says, surprise, and Eric sternly whispers, it's tomorrow night, you idiot. Sean greets Alan by announcing Happy birthday. Corey's father. Corey asks to speak with Sean alone, but Sean shuts that down. I don't want to talk to you. Cory nods, yeah, okay. He turns away from Sean and says, oh boy. Angela nervously asks her boyfriend if he's all right. Sean grabs her waist and grins, damn fine, baby, are you pleasure to see you this evening? You look great? Angela frowns Sean. He quickly goes on the defense. What you disappointed? He turns to Jack. She's disappointed. Jack sighs dude, and Sean mocks him dude. Jack continues to try and talk to his brother, but Sean just keeps repeating everything he says. Finally, Sean taunts man buddy, Sean, Hey, hey, hey, whoa whoa, hey, you do the Matthew Lawrence buddy Buddy. Jack tries to de escalate the situation, reminding Sean he's not supposed to be drinking. Angela intervenes, suggesting they take a walk. Sean asks her, you still love me? Huh? She sighs yes, and Sean reminds her we don't have any mommies, and Angela sympathetically agrees.

00:10:49
Speaker 5: I know this is at least the first time he's bonding with her, Yes, over the same kind of trauma, which hadn't happened in the entire relationship they've had.

00:10:59
Speaker 3: And so I was like, oh, can acknowledging it?

00:11:01
Speaker 5: Yeah, at least they're acknowledging, like that's one of the things that now they're talking about together.

00:11:05
Speaker 3: Yes, we don't have a mom to get that's like I was like, okay.

00:11:08
Speaker 1: Good, which probably why does that not come up or occur to him as being like the most wonderful woman I know also doesn't have a mother. Yeah, and like she turned out great. We've got each other, not just it's I mean at least you're right. At least he does acknowledge it.

00:11:25
Speaker 3: Here it was nice.

00:11:27
Speaker 1: Alan sternly butts in, asking Sean to join him in the kitchen for a minute. Sean wonders, you're gonna make me an omelet? But Alan is all business. I want to have a talk with you now. Sean scoffs, you're not my dad. Alan grabs his arm and reminds him I'm all you have. Sean pushes him off and raises his voice, you're not my dad. The inmates softly ooh.

00:11:49
Speaker 3: Yeah, even I did. I was like, oohoo, it's old school Sean.

00:11:52
Speaker 1: Right here, the violence happens with Alan.

00:11:55
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:11:56
Speaker 1: I don't have a dad and I don't have a mom. I'm an I'm an old orphan. The audience tepidly oos again. Sean continues, voice cracking. My childhood is over and I never had any parents. He cringes at his own sadness and takes a seat. God stop whining. I hate you. Alan tries to comfort him. I'll be your father. Sean laughs it off, you'll be what? But Alan's dead serious. I want you to be a member of this family. Amy jumps in. Alan he pulls her in closer and clarifies, we want you to be a member of this family. Amy Nodd's an agreement. Yeah, we do you need a mom. I'm a really good mom. I got references. Corey pipes up, Yeah she's good. Eric agrees she's the best I've ever had. The audience really gets a kick out of that one.

00:12:52
Speaker 5: I thought I was saying it very sincerely, like because they're just ready to laugh with Eric.

00:13:01
Speaker 2: Is.

00:13:01
Speaker 5: They're just assuming that I'm making a joke about something.

00:13:03
Speaker 1: Now exactly and yes, that's yeah.

00:13:09
Speaker 4: It was being sincere because the idea is that you couldn't have had another mom.

00:13:14
Speaker 5: But the joke is like she's the best I've ever had. But it's not even a joke. It's like a sincere like, right, best mom I've ever had, you know. And and but they still they went.

00:13:22
Speaker 1: Because the great joke they would have said I've had better right, or something exactly right, but they wanted sentimental, and instead the audience was just like, please let us laugh.

00:13:34
Speaker 4: Sec is away from Eric.

00:13:38
Speaker 1: Said something kind of funny. The audience gets a kick out of that one. Worth noting there is also a baby upstairs that has been ignored the whole season, so maybe they are parents. I don't know.

00:13:51
Speaker 3: Sean babies went through McClanahan on the road right.

00:13:55
Speaker 1: Now, Sean is still holding back tears. You want to adopt me, Amy explains, you have always been a part of our family, and Alan suggests, how about we make it official? Instead of accepting the love. Sean backs away and rushes to the door, shoulder checking Angela on his way out. She holds her shoulder check, she holds her head in her hands. What will he do next? Now on the streets of Philly, it's also Christmas time.

00:14:33
Speaker 5: And this is where I literally said, what the because I was like, what it's supposed to be December and Philadelphia right now people are walking around in.

00:14:41
Speaker 1: Like for Christmas.

00:14:43
Speaker 5: There's no Christmas decorations, nobody there's no cold breath, nobody's bundled up.

00:14:48
Speaker 3: I'm like, what's what's happening? Why are they making it Christmas? What's going on? It made no sense.

00:14:54
Speaker 4: I mean they just literally forgot right like they just were like, oh wait, we got to do a Christmas episode. We'll just make this one, but then throw up a tree in the house.

00:15:02
Speaker 3: I know, it made no sense.

00:15:05
Speaker 1: They own the Christmas tree they own. We owned it in the prop department. It was there. I know.

00:15:10
Speaker 5: It's also Tapanga's most important time of the year. It's their first Christmas as a married couple.

00:15:14
Speaker 3: How is that not an episode?

00:15:17
Speaker 5: I mean it's yes, exactly, No, they're just it's one scene on a street that has nothing to do with Christmas except for some lights and manel dress like.

00:15:29
Speaker 1: Sean walks past various stores, followed closely by Minel clause, Sean feels someone's presence and without turning around, comments, well, it's Corey to the rescue old Faithful. Why don't you go home to your wife and leave me alone? So rude? But then but then you also want him to be there.

00:15:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, of course, it's like anyway.

00:15:51
Speaker 1: Sean turns around and realizes it isn't Corey. He apologizes, Sorry, Santa, I thought you were someone else because like by the way you saying, well, worry to the rest of your old faithful Listen, man, there's not going to be anything you can do. This time is different. Then why don't you just go home to your wife? In't like there's such a It's so weird that you say that.

00:16:14
Speaker 5: Yeah, was this also the first time. Did you notice that through the store front there was actually a practical inside, Yeah, there were, there were a background inside like a restaurant.

00:16:25
Speaker 3: I don't think we've ever seen that on our show before.

00:16:27
Speaker 6: No, no, we've walked down that street obviously that's New York Street from from Seinfeld, but I don't think we've ever used the kind of inside they have the depth it was on the street, which is great.

00:16:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, kudos to Fred who was like, you know what, we all want to fill this place up.

00:16:41
Speaker 4: Yes.

00:16:42
Speaker 1: Manel clause, possibly earning his SAG card, earnestly suggests it's cold out, son, go home. Sean says, wow, he really didn't follow me. Huh.

00:16:52
Speaker 4: So Manel was the being the guy who had been beamed by baseball the most amount of times. Baggy back like this is Baggy Bagwell is now working as Santa in the universe.

00:17:05
Speaker 1: The boy meets World the universe.

00:17:09
Speaker 2: This is what here?

00:17:10
Speaker 4: He ends up brilliant.

00:17:12
Speaker 1: He pulls out some change for Santa's donation bucket and chuckles, man a guy gets married and that's the end of me. Manel claws, nods and walks off, and when he leaves, we see Corey was standing behind him the whole time. He smiles and admits, I'm here. Sean grains I knew you would be. Corey wonders where they're going, and Sean reveals I thought we'd go to the cemetery. Corey winceys. I thought we'd go for pie. Shawn isn't budging cemetery. Corey tries one last time boys and Barry. Sean starts walking away and Corey follows close behind. I don't like cemeteries. There's a high concentration of dead people. I haven't even visited my Nana Boo boo. Ben's breaking.

00:17:55
Speaker 4: Oh this is the funniest.

00:17:57
Speaker 1: Yeah, when what is it? It's when you say Nana Boo Boo's not dead, so now you're a doctor. And no one laughs.

00:18:03
Speaker 4: Ye, because it's it's just the funniest thing.

00:18:06
Speaker 5: To us.

00:18:06
Speaker 4: It is, oh my god.

00:18:09
Speaker 1: And he then breaks, but it also seemed like he was breaking because there was no one who laughed.

00:18:15
Speaker 4: And you know, we couldn't have had a live audience. No, I know, we're on New York Street, so there's no laugh track even exactly there.

00:18:23
Speaker 3: It was like watching an episode of mash YEP.

00:18:25
Speaker 1: But it also had that feeling of like no one's gonna throw me a bone, you know, as an actor, when like you're like, guys, we're pre taping. There's no audience. We could give us something, you know, there's only there's only five people here give us something. And the way he the way he breaks is a little like, guys, it's funny. Could you could you laugh?

00:18:45
Speaker 3: Could you out here?

00:18:46
Speaker 1: Help me out here please?

00:18:47
Speaker 4: But I also, just knowing me and Ben, I was probably losing it because I thought that line was funny, and he kept probably making it bigger and more like and changing the boy during the week. I was like, that's a dumb line, and he was like, I'll make it funny. And then the whole week was him trying to break me and like I had to do this dramatic thing, and I was always tense, going like I'm not gonna laugh, I'm not gonna laugh. Yeah, and then he lost it. Oh god, it's so funny.

00:19:15
Speaker 1: Sean reminds him, Nana Boo Boo's not dead. Corey isn't pleased, So now you're a doctor. He grabs Sean and pleads come back to my house. My family offered to adopt you tonight. Do you know how great that is? You would actually be my brother. Sean tells him you are my brother already. Corey pushes more, so, come back to my house. There's life at my house. My family wants you there. What's waiting for you at the cemetery? Sean answers, my family mine. Then he walks away, leaving Corey alone to get mugged now in the cemetery. Obviously, none of us remember this set, including you, writer, You vaguely remember this scene.

00:19:52
Speaker 5: No.

00:19:52
Speaker 4: I remembered that that because I said it in my poem when we do our live shows. I said the line about like sitting in his spa this heart attack. We hung out of a grave and then at some points I was having a conversation. I thought it was you two or something, and there were and somebody was like, no, you never were at a grave site with Chet, and I was like, I swear I was. So I had like convinced myself that this never happened, or that I do.

00:20:14
Speaker 1: Remember that conversation. But it was with someone who has seen all the episodes. Yes, someone was like, oh, it may have been somebody in the audience even.

00:20:22
Speaker 4: Yeah, they were like, no, there's never an episode where you were by the grave, and so I then was like, oh, we must have like rehearsed a scene that never got into the final episode or whatever. But then so when I saw this, I was like, yes, see, I have vindication remember it. It's it's a pretty cool set in the in the sense that like it has depth. Like the way that it goes up in elevation is pretty rare, do you know what I mean? Like you don't usually have sets go up like that, but it's a really smart way to add depth without having to go far back in the stage. So I was impressed with that. I didn't love the lighting. The lighting bothered me, but it which is always the problem when you're shooting an exterior interior right likes fake but especially at night like this. But I was impressed with the set in that regard. But yeah, why not just have the grave in the foreground facing Fuss, like just to show his name, Like.

00:21:13
Speaker 1: I know, we believe you, we believe you, and we're.

00:21:16
Speaker 4: Going to see the ghosts, so we figure it out.

00:21:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, were you were you all trying to read the other headstones to see if they put on like writers' names or I was looking to see if it's like, all right, am I going to know any of the other headstones?

00:21:26
Speaker 3: Nothing that I saw, but I was like, I'm figuring they're going to do something that's funny.

00:21:31
Speaker 1: Now in the cemetery, Sean finds Chet's gravestone and yells at it. Hey, you having a good time in there, hiding all your secrets, like the fact that you've been married sixty two times and never never bothered to tell me who my real mother was. Okay, so at least you I do.

00:21:45
Speaker 4: Yeah, some anger, Yeah, what.

00:21:47
Speaker 1: Possible reason could a father have not to tell his boy who his mom is? And then from beyond the grave, we hear Chet maybe the father was trying to protect the boy, And we get an even bigger surprise when Sean sees Chet standing by a nearby tree. He walks over to his tombstone and thanks his son for planting some flowers. You keep the place real nice and pretty for all my many visitors. Sean wonders, why didn't you tell me who my mom was? Chet shrugs your mother's verna, Sean shakes his head. No, the woman who gave birth to me, Chet waves it off. She took off when you were born. I said, honey, it's a chet looks around, honey, But don't blame her son. She wasn't really the mother type. She was more how can I put this delicately, a stripper mom's mom. No, No, definitely, no.

00:22:36
Speaker 5: You're she was a leather She was obviously a leather jacket girl in high school.

00:22:41
Speaker 3: Leather jacket.

00:22:42
Speaker 4: That happened in high school.

00:22:44
Speaker 3: You go from leather jackets to the pole. Everybody knows that.

00:22:47
Speaker 1: And you could never then have children because how dare you know?

00:22:52
Speaker 3: Or if you do, you're going to abandon them.

00:22:55
Speaker 4: You're going to be a bad mother.

00:22:56
Speaker 1: Yeah, obviously obviously, Well the women are men, So just be a father. Just don't be a mother.

00:23:04
Speaker 3: You don't need one mother, you need two fathers.

00:23:08
Speaker 5: You need don't get rusty, but you need two heterosexual fathers, which is literally.

00:23:14
Speaker 4: The part of Michael's other show, right, two dads. Yeah, we literally just came around to the pitch of like, what.

00:23:23
Speaker 1: If we didn't have to weigh down a show?

00:23:25
Speaker 4: How can we How can we have two men love each other and be a family without any women except the women we have sex with outside of the house.

00:23:33
Speaker 5: Let's add another layer of that to helping raise other kids. Charles in Charge, Charles Church, So you need a man to help raise all the other kids as well.

00:23:46
Speaker 4: Wow, it's literally like the recurring theme is the erasure of women and the role of domestic labor.

00:23:53
Speaker 1: And how important men are for providing it and raising the family.

00:24:00
Speaker 4: One of the best versions of domestic labor. And yeah, oh my god, that is so intense every show and literally what is what is the what is actual? One is not the mama, the mama, not the mama, Mama stripper, she was a stripper.

00:24:16
Speaker 5: Story.

00:24:25
Speaker 4: Wow, did we just like crack some kind of code? The earth just just shifted slightly?

00:24:31
Speaker 3: Just, oh my god.

00:24:34
Speaker 2: I just want to go on record and say that's the funniest five minutes. And podcasts may literally pretty intense, the perfect five minutes I've ever heard in podcast.

00:24:42
Speaker 3: Hitty.

00:24:44
Speaker 4: I'm glad we got it. We got there. It's like it took us, took us seven seasons.

00:24:50
Speaker 7: But we really just got the whole DNA boy meets Borrow, I mean yeah, like psycho analysis.

00:25:01
Speaker 4: God damn, that was his taste.

00:25:04
Speaker 1: Thank god I have therapy. Later.

00:25:05
Speaker 5: I was gonna say, yeah, when you don't want Michael laying on the couch.

00:25:08
Speaker 3: When Freud says, so, tell me about your mother.

00:25:14
Speaker 1: Sean clarifies, my mom was a stripper. Chet nods the best. Sean wonders if he loved her, Chet nods, I did. I did love her. Wasn't enough to hold her though, Sean says, well, neither was I. I guess I wasn't enough to hold her. I wasn't enough to hold Verna. Chet assures him, no, you were adorable. He had that little butt that Verna loved to powder. Women did not find my butt adorable. However, they kicked it around pretty good during my life.

00:25:41
Speaker 5: Them.

00:25:42
Speaker 1: It's on them, not that he was not a good partner.

00:25:45
Speaker 3: No, no. They also allude to the fact that he would drink.

00:25:49
Speaker 1: Oh yeah, he had never had a side.

00:25:52
Speaker 3: Because of them, because of the women.

00:25:55
Speaker 2: Uh.

00:25:56
Speaker 4: Surprising non use of the word tushy. This would be a great time.

00:26:02
Speaker 3: You're not in a cemetery, writer.

00:26:05
Speaker 4: Talk about in the summit.

00:26:07
Speaker 1: The truth is you had a lousy mother and a lousy father.

00:26:12
Speaker 3: Okay, thank you.

00:26:14
Speaker 1: You come from a long line of lousy boy Sean says, he's aware Chet size, and they take a seat next to his grave. You got delta bad hand son, I'm sorry about it. Sean reveals that the matthews have offered to adopt him, and Chet's blown away. That sounds like a sweet deal, but Sewn's not so sure. Chet says it doesn't get any better than the Matthews and it would be a real trade up. Sean reminds Chet he's his father, but Chet points out the obvious I'm dead. Look, take it from your dead dad. Become a Matthews. Put it to bed. Sean admits, you know, I always thought you were the black sheep of the family, but you weren't. You stayed, you raised me. Hmm okay, Chet states.

00:26:56
Speaker 4: Now would would would would we have?

00:26:58
Speaker 5: Would it have been worse if okay, so say he had this entire conversation, we keep it all exactly the same way. Maybe you should go to the Matthews because this is all an internal struggle for Sean and just have just add the line, well, I can't tell you about your my mom did if you can't find her, I can't help you, you know, instead of actually he's literally giving him the information like you said before, writer, where it's like, by the way, here's where I buried money, Like what what.

00:27:24
Speaker 4: Like you're actually giving.

00:27:25
Speaker 5: You could have easily just been having this internal conversation with yourself right about the Matthews, about yes, you got Delta bad hand in life, and it's coming from Chet, but he's not actually telling you anything you don't know already.

00:27:37
Speaker 1: Yeah, and and saying knowing who your mother is won't change anything in your life. You've got everything you need already. You've got great friends, You've got the Matthews. This is a mystery that's best just left a mystery. Yeah, but I guess once they once you buy into the idea that the ghost can talk to you, why can't Why wouldn't the ghost just answer you?

00:28:00
Speaker 5: I also give you information you didn't have before, which doesn't yet, it doesn't make any sense at all.

00:28:04
Speaker 1: Chet states the obvious. I came and went. I tried. Seawan insists you did a good job with me, Dad, people like me. I even have friends. I even have someone who loves me. Chet demands he hold on to her, and Sean promises he will, just like I'm holding onto you.

00:28:18
Speaker 4: For five more episodes.

00:28:20
Speaker 1: Chet doesn't get it. Why would you want to do that, Sean explains, because I'm proud of you. You're the one who started to turn this family around. Chet doesn't believe him. You're proud of me, Sean nodds, couldn't be prouder. Chet laughs, Ain't that a kick? Sean says he tried to tell him at the hospital, and Shed admits, well, I couldn't really hear you. You know, I was going oh, but Chet assures him I hear you now. Sean thanks him for being his father. Chet nods, you love me. Huh. Sean jokes, ain't that a kick. Chet puts a hand on his son's face. Maybe I can finally get a little sleep. Sean watches him go, and then Corey appears at the cemetery entrance. Sean, you do what you needed to do. Staring at his dad's gravestone, He nods, yeah, I did. Then Corey makes his way over to Chet's resting place. Hi, mister Hunter, how you doing? You know me and Topanga got married. Wish she could have been there. Corey assures Chet that Sean will be okay, and he hopes he's happy. Sean lets him know he is core and he grabs his best friend now brothers and walks him out the entrance. He thanks him and they walk out arm in arm. Back in the matthews living room, Sean is facing Alan with everyone watching on. He breaks the news. I'm sorry, but I can't be in Matthew's Alan nods. I understand. The invitation is always on the table. Sean smiles, thank you, but I have a feeling there's too much repair work I got to do for the Hunter clan. He throws an arm around Jack and they share a smile. The idea that in this In ninety nine, we were doing an episode about healing generational trauma, which is something that's very in the lexicon now and very is very progressive. I do not remember knowing of even understanding the concept of breaking generational cycles of that kind of thing. I really don't. I wish this episode had been more about that had been because that is that's the storyline of Sean that is kind of tragic, is and also the storyline of Angela that's maybe a little tragic that escaping this.

00:30:51
Speaker 4: Idea is in both cases a woman wanting her own life right. Well, you're not allowed to get to this case and Mike the story the trauma that they they they ruined their children by divorcing or not being there, like by not doing their role as a wife, mother person, right, Like that that is and that's why Topeka can't go to Yale. That's what like, you should not avoid. You can't avoid your responsibility as a good wife, mother figure. Yeah, that's it, Like that's the that's the logic. Though. It's like because if like if Vernon had an addiction problem, if fell in love with somebody else, if Sean's mom, But no, it's that they were sexually loose and didn't want to have the role of a mother. It's it's like they rejected irresponsible, and that's abdigating your responsibility as a as a woman. Like that's the generational trauma. I know what you're saying, which I totally get and I I doin that interesting and I think it's cool that our show even broke the subject. But the logic of the actual gender.

00:31:54
Speaker 3: Roles is pretty that's where it went to.

00:31:58
Speaker 5: But I think what they were trying to do, quote unquote trying to do with his search of his family was like, oh, and the guys on this side slaughtered an entire village, like we've got hundreds of years of bad hunters. But then it's about the women. But then at least Chet does say you had a bad mother and father, like, oh, there was a weird pause that you put there, but okay, where it's just like instead of like you had a bad.

00:32:23
Speaker 4: I regeche I said you were you were actually great.

00:32:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm going to be more like you and less like her.

00:32:31
Speaker 4: You broke them as you stayed.

00:32:33
Speaker 5: And then it's and it's the whole thing. Yeah, it's very very patriarchal.

00:32:37
Speaker 1: Yeah.

00:32:38
Speaker 5: Yeah, So it's called boy Meets World. It is from the male perspective, and our writer is a man, and I hopefully we wouldn't be hypocrites and if it was all female heavy be going like, well what is a man writing for a woman? You know, like we might be arguing that point as well. So I get where we're kind of it's a little bit of a catch twenty two, but it it does become so glaring at times where it's like, wow, there is a very specific point of view of what a woman's place.

00:33:07
Speaker 1: Is when it comes to Yeah, he throws an arm around Jack and they share a smile. Corey pipes up. If you change your mind, you know you have family here, Sean says, he knows. He turns to Alan, wants more and says, I'm so sorry I ruined your party. He hands Alan a gift wrapped in newspaper Happy Birthday. So, did you guys stop at home or no, you already had this? Where was this?

00:33:30
Speaker 5: Maybe it was in the car. He left it in the car, but then did he drunk drive over?

00:33:33
Speaker 3: And he's also sober.

00:33:34
Speaker 4: Now, oh, this is all the same night.

00:33:36
Speaker 1: Yeah, no, it's still the night.

00:33:40
Speaker 3: No, because he said I'm sorry I ruined the party. Everybody's still there.

00:33:42
Speaker 1: Everybody's still there. It's the same night. You guys, you leave, you talk to Sanna, you go to the cemetery, you talk to Chet.

00:33:49
Speaker 4: And then you go back with something that I went right.

00:33:53
Speaker 1: With a birthday gift. So I guess you stopped at home, and.

00:33:55
Speaker 5: You must have stopped at home and hopped in with Corey.

00:33:59
Speaker 1: Corey, yes are which they walked from the house. It seemed like with Sanna.

00:34:03
Speaker 5: So yeah, okay, and it's Christmas, Merry.

00:34:10
Speaker 1: Christmas, Merry Christmas everyone. He hands Alan a gift wrapp in a newspaper Happy Birthday. Alan excitedly unwraps the gift to reveal a homemade ceramic circle with handprints carved into it. Eric laughs and whispers to Corey that is such a stump gift. Watch how mad dad gets. Alan reads the words choking.

00:34:27
Speaker 4: Up to not gonna lie. I got emotional.

00:34:31
Speaker 1: I did too, totally.

00:34:33
Speaker 4: As much as we can talk wrap about this episode, I completely teared up at this moment. He was like, oh, Sean giving this to Alan. I don't think this episode quite earned it, but the show earned this, you know, like the over overall seven seasons. This moment is such a huge payoff for me. Like I can remember it and I just loved it.

00:34:55
Speaker 5: Like he just told Chet you're my dad, and you're dad and told Alan I can't be part of your family, then handed him something that said to my dad.

00:35:04
Speaker 4: I know it's it's it's having your cake and eating it too, right.

00:35:07
Speaker 1: It's like having your dad is because there is a difference between I don't want to legally be a Matthews, but symbolically your your might you have always been a dad to me, and my dad is no longer here for this little handprint of mine that says to my dad, so symbolically you're my dad. Even so, it is having its cake and eating it too, and I love it. Give me more cake.

00:35:33
Speaker 3: Cake unless it's PANATONI.

00:35:35
Speaker 4: If I just wish the scene had ended like at this beat, like he could have literally just been like, oh my god, we thank you. I'm going to check you forever. End of episode.

00:35:45
Speaker 3: Yeah.

00:35:47
Speaker 1: Eric changes his tune and runs over, Oh that's actually for both of us, Dad. See. He holds his hand up to the pottery and it doesn't fit, so he walks away. Sean tells Alan that there is one thing he can do for him. Alan tells him to name it. Sean tells him to yell at him, like he yells at Corey and Eric. Alan laughs. Is that what he wants? Sean swears he can take it. He's not afraid now this, I have no doubt. Is the network note about their needing to be repercussions.

00:36:13
Speaker 3: Or drinking drinking? Probably?

00:36:17
Speaker 1: Everyone eggs Allen on, so he gives it all he's got. He warms up, untels Sean, maybe you should be afraid because I'm a Navy goddamn seal, he says.

00:36:25
Speaker 4: Did he say goddamn? Did I miss that?

00:36:27
Speaker 1: He said goddamn? I think that's what he says.

00:36:31
Speaker 5: Yeah, Wow, that would be the harshest swear we've ever said.

00:36:37
Speaker 3: I know on boy, were by far? Goddamn is is that's a harsh one.

00:36:41
Speaker 1: Maybe he just got you know, like as a god. Damn, I don't know.

00:36:48
Speaker 4: Right, you suck. We weren't allowed to say suck.

00:36:52
Speaker 3: We couldn't say.

00:36:53
Speaker 5: My original take was when Alan grabs me and says, get off your and get a job.

00:36:58
Speaker 3: We couldn't do that, so God Dad, we.

00:37:00
Speaker 4: Said sluts last week or two weeks now, which's weird.

00:37:03
Speaker 1: Yeah, Eric is thrilled. Hey, that's where I got that from. He used to yell that at me all the time. Alan keeps giving Sean a piece of his mind. You want another beer? Why don't you go in the fridge. Huh so maybe you can lose an arm Corey oohs, and Alan calmly asks Sean how he's doing. Sean admits great, you're doing great. Alan continues sternly, don't do these things anymore. It scares your friends. Angela agrees, I know what scares me, Alan adds, and they love you. Angela and Sean embrace. She assures him, Yeah, I do. Sean grabs her hand. Never leave, She tells him, I won't. Alan stands nearby and lets them know, someday you may want to buy a house, and you're gonna come to me. Corey leans down to Tapanga and whispers, I think this is about us. Alan tells Sean, I got news for you. Get a job. Sean grins, yes, sir, thank you, Sir. Alan puts a hand on his head and gives him a light slap. You're welcome, and there's no.

00:38:00
Speaker 3: Tech question did anybody? Does anybody know?

00:38:03
Speaker 5: Because I know that I think one of the four or five episodes that Disney wouldn't show Disney Channel wouldn't show was the drinking episode. Oh so he's drunk in this episode. Did they not show this episode either?

00:38:14
Speaker 3: I don't know.

00:38:15
Speaker 5: I don't know if this is one of the it would be weird if this is one of the ones that was the forbidden episode. But he's clearly drunk and they're talking about drinking in this one.

00:38:22
Speaker 1: Maybe he doesn't they don't show it because he says.

00:38:25
Speaker 4: God damn.

00:38:27
Speaker 3: Maybe that's what it is.

00:38:29
Speaker 1: I don't know. I feel like I need to go back and verify.

00:38:33
Speaker 4: That it was just the Prong episode and the drinking episode.

00:38:36
Speaker 2: I have it so there's three episodes. Season five episode eighteen, if you can't be with the one you love due to underage drinking. Season five episode twenty two promises promises for sexual theme and season six episode twenty truth about honesty again for sexual theme.

00:38:51
Speaker 5: Not the honeymoon where they actually have sex and she's under the covers naked.

00:38:55
Speaker 1: We're married, but you're still under.

00:38:57
Speaker 3: The covers naked.

00:38:58
Speaker 4: You're married.
