The Boys Of Bummer (S18E18)

Four Finger Discount (Simpsons Podcast)

After costing the Springfield Isotots the championship game, Bart becomes the most hated boy in town. Meanwhile, Homer becomes a mattress salesman at Costington's and helps the Lovejoys with their intimacy issues.

Honestly, the title of this episode is really fitting, as the Bart story truly leaves you feeling bummed out. The Homer/Lovejoys story was a bit of fun though.

Simpson drops the ball any kitchen and he kicks it again and again. Oh
it's horrible flicking. Can't take your eyes away. It's like watching a monkey
swallow a hand grenade. Four finger discounted. Welcome to four figure this gap.
With this week, we're going to be feeling a little bit down because
we're reviewing the Boys of Bummer. I'm Dano, yes, and I am
guying. Welcome to the episode where we do the schlapping. I like that
bit though. Those were my favorite moments. I've got a few. I've
got more favorite moments yeah, from this episode than I imagined I would because
at this episode, I was like, this is the thing A bit of
a mixed bag for me because I liked it. I liked the mattress story
right, I thought it was a bit weird because it's like, why is
I'm not issuing the refund? This doesn't make sense. Wouldn't you return the
matress to the stall? Shouldn't mister Costington's department. I don't go to Chris
from JB High Fine and say I didn't enjoy this movie. I want to
refund from you, sir. You sold me the movie. But you know
what, I mean, But I thought the overall vibe of this episode was
just so mean and cruel that it made it hard to even enjoy the funny
bits. I feel like, if it wasn't so mean and cruel, I
would have enjoyed those funny bits more. It's just the vibe of it just
maybe going I get this is funny, but it was just so mean most
of this. Yeah, there's certainly a way to do episodes where someone becomes
the paria of the town. Yes, it's been done before it. I
think it's been done with Bart certainly. I mean when topping off the head
of the statue exactly, that's the one. That's the one. Yeah.
In this case, however, Yeah, it really is all about executioners.
It are all about the tone in which you do so. And in this
way, it was just like, there's nothing amusing about this. There's nothing
when it's when it's adults being mean to a child to this extent. If
it was if it was home, I don't think it'd affect us as much.
But seeing but when they animated him actually crying, I was like,
but this is just not fun anymore. Yeah, if it's not going to
be fun, then at least make it a lesson, Yes, because I
get what they were going for with the whole And it's true, particularly with
local teams and things, when they win a championship, they are legends,
and the second they make a slight mistake, we just hound them. Right,
But this is a child, and I know that's Springfield and it's meant
to be that's the satire, but it went out for so long and it
was so not un funny. It's just unrealistic certainly to some degree. I'm
not alone in saying this, and I'm not the only person who is.
But I grew up reading Peanuts. Charlie Brown. That was a good visual
with the clothes coming off. Yeah, absolutely, And yeah they paid tribute
that in this as well. So I was wondering if that might actually have
informed some of this episode. But you know, Charlie Brown just copped it
left and right all the time. And I felt so much for that guy.
I related so much Charlie Brown growing up, because you know, I
had receding hairline, poor dress, it's unreguarded. Love the little Redhaired girls
guy and Charlie Brown soul brothers. I got the Charlie Brown Christmas for the
Peanuts Christmas Like it's a foil cover and it's like a colored vinyl for Christmas.
I was like, this is ye, I mean, Peanuts is just
it's one of the great American works of art of the twentieth century. I
don't think it gets as many much credit these days as it should. No,
but it was people here, and people who grew up, say through
seventies, eighties, nineties, still talk about it all the time. But
like, I feel like anyone born after like say twenty ten, maybe even
like two thousand, doesn't really know what Peanuts is. They know Snoopy maybe,
but not really Charlie Brown. Yes, but not so much Charlie Brown.
I think they tried to. I like with every like whever the animated
property is like, Oh, there's there's money in there, let's make a
movie out of it. They made a CGI film, didn't they did.
I don't. I don't really recall it all that much, although going in
I was like, oh, man, don't mess up, Charlie Brown,
don't mess uplying it, don't mess up Lucy. I remember that it looked
good though, and this is not bad. Yeah, yeah, And it
was kind of faithful to the to the tone that charl Schultz created. But
at the same time, I think we were entering a period whereas like,
let's not be too mean, and there's an underlying listing Simpsons writers. There's
another lying melancholy to Peanuts. We're not really talking about the boys Obama so
much because there's not much to talk about. It's relevant and by the way,
we have an awesome male bag that's been sent in. They'm going to
be at the start of this podcast as we finished tucking here, because I
thought this episode is such a down up, let's start off with a with
something positive. Let's get a bit of it. But yeah, but yeah,
so you thought they would be. They weren't being mean enough to Charlie
Beann in the film. It wasn't mean enough so much as look, I'm
not exactly sure where I'm going here. There was always positivity in Yeah,
Peanuts, but it came through occasionally, it wasn't at the forefront. I
think season eighteen, I think Charles Schultz was essentially saying life's kind of rough.
Yeah, yeah, life can be pretty tough, and then people are
going to have a go at, but occasionally there's going to be moments of
friendship, of love, of support, of companionship, all that kind of
stuff. That's the good stuff in life. Look out for it, Chaeriship
when you get it. I feel like that it used to be Disney's model,
even with kids films. Life's hard, Shit's gonna happen, but you'll
get through it. You can overcome it. Yeah yeah, but fus It
died. This wasn't Disney, but The Land Before Time, Big little Foot,
his mother died. It's like when you're a kid, all these movies
you think there's a traumatic but they got through it, you know. Yes.
I always cite that line from Scream director Where's Craven? And he talked
about how movies, horror movies in particular, can be emotional boot camp.
You're watching a horror movie. Oh I'm scared. Wait a minute, I'm
not dead. Oh yeah, okay, that's a fair point. Whatever doesn't
kill me might just make me stronger. Yeah yeah, And I think that
applies to Peanuts. It's like Alliott. He used to always have to have
the hallway light on, and then one day I just turned it off.
I said, no, you'd be fine, He'd be fine. He didn't
really like his, I promise, if you get too scared, I'll put
it back on. And I left it off in about two hours later,
he's asleep and you wake up and he goes, I don't need the light
anymore. I'm like, see, there you go. There's a movie on
Netflix I haven't watched yet, but I'm quite keen to called The Ryan and
the Dark. I haven't seen that one. I haven't seen it. Advertisement
for it. Usually Netflix is like, you must watch this one Netflix front
of the pod? Are they You're You're kind of dropping the ball when it
comes to marketing a fan because there's so much people use Netflix as kind of
the code word or that's the code of streaming right. Essentially, it's like,
well, people my mum's age are just like, I've got the Netflix.
Netflix is like, it's not the WWE of the wrestling world, but
they're the WWE of the streaming world. But with that also comes being a
buzzword for the worst of streaming as well. It's like, okay, yeah,
you've got you know, some crap documentaries or oh, you had a
good show, but you didn't market it all. And I've been that's the
thing with Netflix. I don't really market stuff all that well. Content over
quality pretty much. You know. If they think that something's really going to
hit on the algorithm, push push push it and number one trending is is
it really number one trending today? That looking rom com with what's the name
from Jane the Virgin, it just looks ship the Red Glass. It's like,
I don't think this is number one in Australia today. I think he's
sucking a lot of people into watching this. But this one called a Ryan
in the Dark is yeah, an animated movie, kids movie where a little
boy is basically afraid of everything. He's like, but the thing I'm afraid
of most is the dark. And then the dark comes to life? Uh
comes to life. It's a c g I film. Yeah, Okay,
and it's how the are you gonna mate that? It's not? It's very
much like Monsters Inc. To the best. I think I know what you're
talking about now, Yes, and Dark's like the actor who does it is
a guy named Paul Walter Houser. He's a fantastic actor. He sounds a
lot like Chris Farley in this though. But I'm the dark and I'm going
to show you that I'm actually a pretty nice guy. The ovisinal Shrek.
Yeah, this looks really thought, this looks really good. I'll watch it
when I get around here. I am big upping this thing that I actually
watched. It might be ship. But you know, sometimes though, and
we'll get to this mailbag in a second, but sometimes it's nice to have
things in your list that you're looking forward to watching it, and it gets
to the point where you're like, I just like knowing that it's there gives
me something to look forward to, but you don't actually watch them put aside
for a rainy day very much. That's what Deep Rising was for me,
because you can mention it for months and months and now that night I watched
and I fucking loved it. But I'm just like, you know what,
I've got two hours now, I'm in the mood, let's do this.
And I was excited and it paid off. But I'm thinking this might be
something for you and Elliott to enjoy. Ryan O. R I N and
the Dark and the Dark have looked Oryan and the Dark Netflix. Okay,
yeah, I know the one. Now I actually have seen it pop up.
Yeah, I will check it out with Elliott I think it might be
and thens on what we were talking about, and then he is now afraid
of the duck again. Way it's the dark. It's bad, but this
story right. So this will send in Simpson's mailbag at gmail dot com.
It's from Chris Whitney. It's a bit of a long one, but believe
me, does it pay off, particularly for you and I. We have
a bit of a connection here. So hello, four Finger discounts. Long
time listening to the pod one of my absolute favorites now for about six years
since I first started listening. Keep up the great work. I have a
brief story, so stick with me. Being from Lincoln, Nebraska, were
pretty far away from Australia. However, in third grade, which was nineteen
ninety two, we had an exchange student and his mum come to Lincoln from
Geelong, Australia. All the places right. The mum was our literature teacher
and the son was our age and they would both and they would both be
with us for a year, spanning from January to December. We would usually
play touch football or flag football, which is like American foota for kids in
the States at recess. So there was definitely no physical tackling of any kind.
Well, our exchange student, whose name was James, did not know
this, and one of the first times he played, he absolutely leveled this
poor kid who had the ball. We calmly explained to him through laughter that
you went supposed to actually physically tackle someone in this version of the game.
The very next play they threw a pass to me, and sure enough he
comes James again on the other team, bearing down to me. I saw
this and I looked and looked like he was going to creamy. So I
meekly stepped out of bounds and curled up in case he was going to tackle
me. I look up and he's just sitting there, laughing his ars off
along with everybody else. He was never going to tackle me after the explanation
he received after the previous tackle, but he thought it'd be funny to just
pretend to. James and his mum are great and we were sad to see
them head back to Australia later that year. So we fast forward about twenty
years two twenty and eleven and it's late at night and I'm watching this AFL
Grand Final that popped up on ESPN and it's Geelong taken on Collingwood. You
remember that, you Obviously they keep talking about this fella named Jimmy Bartel,
Oh my God, for Geelong, and I'm like, wait a minute,
there's no way that's him. Sure Enough, the very kid who threw the
fear of gotten to me on the playground in America is leading Geelong to a
championship, win championship. It was him and his mum Diane who were here
in Nebraska so many years ago, and Jim Bartel won the best player a
field in that game. I've meant to send this email for a number of
years since I started listening to the pub, but finally got around to it.
I also watched I always watched AFL when it would pop on our sports
channels for whatever, but that that twenty eleven final was the first time I
actually watched a match in a very long time. Needless to say, it
was fun to see ob the success that James or Jimmy Bartell's we know him
here had made a Geelong fan in the process, and he made me a
Geeong fan the process. If he attacked me, I could have claimed to
be attacked by one of Geelong's icons. Thanks for the pot I hope you're
feeling you're having a great year. How else was that we are definitely now
having a great thanks to that letter. That was fantastic, Chris, thank
you so much for sharing that story with us. What are the fucking odds
of Bartel? I feel like we have to like send this to Jimmy.
We absolutely should. My nephew, yep, gus went to school or did
he go to school with Jimmy? Buttell Joey's yes, yes, yeah,
yeah, so he may have gone to school with him. He definitely played
footy with him back in the day, so I'm not sure they're still in
contact at all, but yeah, Jimmy Bartel, absolute gelong hero, absolute
ledge. This was a fantastic story, Chris, I know right you told
this. I was like James, and then when he's like Jimmy, Buttell's
like, but yeah, if you've got great stories like that, it's gonna
be hard to top that story, obviously, but if the idea that he
went to it was like nah, mate, So yeah, Jimmy, but
I tell, if you're out there listening, get in touch with Chris Whitney.
He wasn't here from you, but yeah, I thought it was a
really fun story to start the show off with. That is really really good
indeed. But getting back to the episode, obviously, so we touched on
the mattress story. I brought up how it doesn't really make sense with Homer
being the one to have to offer the refund, but I just liked the
idea that there's a perfect mattress. My uncle Darren, who was you know,
friend of the pod. He's a subscriber, I was on Patreon.
He had this bet and yet he got rid of it like last year,
but for like thirty years he had this mattress and it was so soft and
it almost felt like a water bed, but it wasn't a waterbed. And
whenever we say, uncle, Damn's like can we sleep in that bed please?
It was like it was the best mattress. We went and bought a
new mattress about I don't know, about five years ago. Changed everything,
not just like sex life, but I'm just meaning like just sleepwise, Like,
yeah, my mattresses can be a bad back, but there's something about
a really good mattress. There really is, YEA. Lu and I went
shopping for various mattresses. I mean, when Lu and I first got together,
it was because we got our mattress, like fifty to fifty. They
made it one way on this half and one way on that half. According
to our back the new one is okay, I believe. Yeah. But
when lu and I first got together and I would stay, it was like
this bit's too sock. I was very much like Goldielogs, like I really
like being with this lovely lady, but at the same time, this bed
is this is untenable. So after we've been seeing each other for a while
and yeah, we're both of you guys, I think we're going to be
spending a better time in the same bed, we should probably get one that's
good for both of us, not you. It's the mattress. Why are
you leaving? Why do you always run away? It's the bed, honey?
Why does this keep heavy? We did buy a new bed and then,
yeah, we were lying on is that we were basically doing a homework,
don't you When you're in a store laying on a bed, it's like,
no, this is what you're supposed to be doing. But still laying
out in a bed, and even in a bed store just feels odd.
Well until you take your pants off. Oh yeah, that makes far more
comfortable. We're are the human? Are you pants on? Pants off?
In the bed? I'm clothes off. I'd never sleep the clothes on in
the bed. Ah, I am clothes on. Well, I'm not pajamas,
T shirt and shorts or whatever. Yes, yes, I can't.
I just can't. I just can't do it. But certainly around this time
of year, it is, it is hot along right now, it's going
to be even hotter eight tomorrow degrees celsius and not the short that is in
fahrenheit, but fucking that's near, and that's near and one hundred Yeah,
pretty sure. I think forty equals are I think fort's a look centigrade or
celsius thirty eight one hundred fahrenheit. I think celsius. You're probably right.
I just confirm at fahrenheit. Look here, you're far can not be accessed
thirty eight degrees. Stop asking about the weather. Celsius. Yeah, more
interesting topic. It's one hundred exactly, and that this is the thing I
remember watching The Sandlot, which we did a movie Guys review for one hundred
and fifty degrees outside. What's one hundred and fifty degrees fairmlise fucking what it's
like you're walking on the sun a sixty five? Did they weigh those sixty
five degrees Outik, that's exaggerations. They were children, they exaggerated. But
I always base my idea of what it must what fucking hot must be,
is one hundred and fifty degrees. I don't think i've ever but continue.
Yes, yeah, uh, naked sleeping, naked sleeping. I tend to
be a either pajama shorts or boxer shorts and T shirt kind of person,
even in this weather. But I'll I'll usually wag them and down sometime in
the middle of the night, I stripped off my T shirt. Yeah,
for the boys or everything. This is the thing I know I'm getting to
towards middle age because I now get excited for a good pair of pajamas,
because I like wearing pajamas around the house. When it's bad to my tack
them off. But I get excited now for oh, the Simpsons pjs.
Like I never used to bother with Peaches, I just wear T shirt and
shorts. Now I like wearing pajamas. And I was talking to about our
dear friends unc Rico, friends of the podcast. They're now looking into Yeah,
it seems pajamas are now the thing. You know, for a while
it was the Woodies and they became that everyone just copied in the oversized jumpes,
oversized hoodies. But now it's pajamas, a themed license set of pajamas.
Onesies were very big for a while, they were yeah, yeah,
then Woodies took a role at the role of that. But now it's just
pj's back to the classics. Nothing like the real thing, baby exactly.
One know how we'll get into the whole love making the naked anyway, But
what do you think of the story in the sense that do you think do
you buy it to the fact that it can impact your sex life A good
mattress, well, a little far fetched, but a little Yeah. I
think a good sex life is good sex life wherever you're doing it. Yeah,
I'm not sure that a mattress really, you know, plays that much
of a role in it. Yeah, it's all about the way you.
I think it's more. I think it's more about your dance, the courting,
let's say. Yeah, I think certainly I recognize as I'm getting a
bit older that oh sleep yes, oh yeah, I've been listening to a
lot of motivational stuff, a lot of self helpy kind of things to ease
my way along the journey of life. So many people are saying sleep just
to sleep. You need it, you really need it. That's why when
sometimes last week I got big, I'll go to bed late, right so
I get a fast sleep. Last night, I was in bed and it
was like two minutes to midnight. It's like hashtag now watching, and I'm
like, why are you watching a movie? Guy? It's because I had
access to the final episode of Monsieur Speed, which is a really really good
show. I was a show. Okay, Yes, I wasn't watching a
whole movie. Yeah, I just watching the last episode of YEA and it
was the final episode really good. But do you put the hashtag now watching?
Is that during or before? You're just about to before? Okay?
Yeah, because I don't know whether. Sometimes I see it really late and
I'm like, is he putting this is? I'm starting this now? But
you're right there sleep. Sometimes it gets like ten o'clock and I'm like,
you should just go to it, and I know I should just go to
bed, but I go, but I really want to watch this thing without
interruptions or I just want to do this. I just want to have me
time, because I very rarely get me time. It's usually come to clean
up the house, or podcasts or kids a while. But yeah, bed
before ten is a good motto. I did that for about two months and
it changed everything. I was just I've had more energy, I was happier.
But yeah, it's really good. But you sound like a fuddy duddy
when you say it's like you should get more sleep. Yeah, I know,
but we should. People keep saying for the right reason. There's a
reason for it. Absolutely. Yeah, Plus it just feels great. What's
the time for you when you go to bed where you're like it's early enough.
We're just like, oh, yeah, I'm gonna get a good night
sleep for me. If I'm in bed before at nine thirty, I'm excited
for that. There are sometimes when it's nine thirty. Absolutely, it's like,
oh, I'm going to I'm going to slip the shit out of this
night. I'm gonna make this note monch. And then and then you sit
on your phone for two hours and it's like quarter to midnight, start watching
something. But I need to toe my phone off when I get a bed.
I give myself half an hour because otherwise I just get lost in time.
I'll get a bed early. I stay awake longer on my phone.
Well, I will have something on YouTube playing, or some sleep sound playing
like some is it as mr or ams R. I know what you mean,
though, yeah, sleep sound. It's not necessarily someone who storm sounds.
I found a really great that loves loves the rain. There are so
many videos of just like ten hours of a thunderstorms. That's my job.
I remember. I remember seeing some tweets that was basically, is anyone else
reads a stage where they slided a bit and just go oh yeah, that's
the stuff. I was like, more than you know, I wonder if
there's a market, right, just say, for example, it's a bit
of thunderstorm, right, if I get the microphones, just record the storm
right and then go Geelong storm from January twenty seventh, nineteen ninety seven.
Right, there was a youtue channel that said you can listen to the actual
storm from nineteen ninety six. Would you listen to that? I probably would?
Actually, yeah, what do you think? I would like? Take
you back? It's like it's just rain, but it's like this was the
actual rain that I was listening to thirty four years ago. That's thirty kilometers
from my house. Yeah, I don't know. Is there a market for
that. I reckon there would be a person. I've got for loop from
one of our anniversaries was you can go online and find this. This was
the night sky on your anniversary. That's cool. That's actually really good because
losing to the stars, Yeah, this would be a nice one. Yeah,
she loved it. She did enjoy it, I think said she didn't.
No, you thought it was a nice kid. That's did she actually
enjoy it though? Look at were expecting a better response. Oh that's pretty
thoughtful, and I think it's a pretty cool present. Yeah. Well,
I mean I augmented that with some jewelry. Okay, flashy blingling. Next,
I said, Mattress also this because I was thinking, yes, my
favorite what are your favorite moments from the episode, mister Davis. I did
enjoy once they won the I guess it was the semi final or the preliminary
final or whatever it was that we caught the prelim but the game to get
into the championship. Yes, where the team is up on the dais and
they're just acting like dickheads. I mean, Bart moons the crowd and never
and starts throwing eggs. Quimby says, these boys are found the right to
act like arrogant arrogant oaks. Yep, that's the way it goes, and
I kind of agree with it to some degree. This is semi related but
not really, or this is not related but sort of is. You didn't
tell it anyways, so just tell it. I met another show that's just
finished up Season four of True Detective. Okay, you saw the best ending
ever or something. I did not put that. Oh oh that was for
season two, which is really good, which you thought was Season four did
not have such a great gay It was fine. But the guy who created
True Detective to begin with, writer Nick Pitzolato, he's not really involved with
season four, but he's got his name on it and I imagine as casting
a sizeable check from it. That still hasn't stoped him being absolute bitch on
social media saying, eh, this kind of sucks True Detective. Yeah.
So he's critiquing the product, yeah wow, and profiting and piss taking.
Yeah, And part of me is going, I don't know. I always
enjoy it. When artists or whoever talk about the smack, it's kind of
fun and it's kind of dishy and interesting at the same time, shows have
got some balls. I'm also thinking you should be above this, my man.
But if I was making true attative season four, I probably would appreciate
the original guy taking the piss. No. The woman who is basically behind
Season four, who directed all the episodes and wrote a lot of them,
has been very diplomatic about it all so of some of the co stars and
say, well, you know that's what they think. Yeah, so it's
a shame, but you know, what are you gonna do? Yeah.
Part of me's going, yeah, tell it like it is. If you
Yeah, if you don't like that someone has in your mind Sully, the
name of something you created, something you're really associated with, go for it.
It's fun, it's dishy. Another part of me is going, you
should be better than this. You should be kind of a be an example,
be a role model. I agree, but I also think if there
was a post from George Luca's shit Canning the Last Jedi when it first came
out, can you imagine how much engagement that would have gone? I would
have done it, so it's just trade tradings. So it's always a fine
line of like being confident enough and celebratory enough in something that you've accomplished,
it should be constructive criticism. Yeah, there's a great line that a lot
of you hear a bit was like be humble, but let motherfuckers know.
Yeah, it was like, yeah, sure I won, but I won.
So I think I thought that line really spoke to It's like taking the
MJ approach a little Lebron approach. Lebron's more toned down. I mean,
he brags back how good he is, but MJ's just sitting there with the
Sigaronese mouth saying, motherfuckers, look at me. But he was doing that
all the time. I mean it was pretty obvious, you know when when
MJ was playing this guy thinks he's pretty good, but at the same time
he's Michael Jordan. So I enjoyed that a bit. There's a gag when
there's a crowd outside the Simpsons place and someone has a you know, like
an out at the hospital. Is that side the hospital but's in the hospital,
and they're saying that they're doing bart. I thought it was outside the
hat. But it's later in the episode someone's holding a sign and then when
I think, Marge says he's just a little boy and hoose and everyone sort
of starts feeling bad. The sign drops and someone brings up saying we're sorry,
and it just happens really quickly, sort of in the back. That's
why I decided to do the fake game. Yeah, yeah, it is.
It is the hospital because Bart falls from the tower. Ah, okay,
yeah, that's it. My apologies, No, that's fine. And
the other thing that I liked it felt like this was a gag that was
a reverse engineer. They came up with the punchline first, and then it's
like, oh, how do we make this happen? How do we make
this happen? And it's when margin Homer are ghosts at the day? Yeah,
oh, let's have go sex. Go sex is worse than nothing?
Well, why are you moaning because I'm a ghost? That's a pretty good
punchline. And it feels like the punchline is that why were you moaning because
I'm a ghost? You didn't need to go there. But I guess it
paid off of having ghost because you're still Yeah, but like that was it
was fine. It's just because I was a ghost. Yeah, it didn't
feel like it wasn't a great gag, but it had a great punchline.
Yeah yeah, I lined Marge making the deal with the coach. How that
sort of it's like, oh, you pretend to be the ghost of the
musment part that I want, let's just stop now. And I liked the
line of now, I'm not a man who believes in miracles, but you
could this bed could resurrect our sex life. And then the slapping just because
I haven't touched on this. The thing I liked about the love Joys here
was that for maybe season or two now, we've been complaining about how they
seemed so unhappy all the time. At least this is a bit of a
payoff to that. Now we know. Next question, you there eating the
beast, all right, mister Davis, It is time for trivia. Okay.
Oh I'm gonna hit you hit me? Okay. The first question we
called it the prelim a little earlier. What was the final score of the
pre limb Ah shit, I'm just seeing five two at some point that's obviously
not it. What was it? It became five to three five three,
Okay, yes, I was initially going to say, what is the name
of the Springfield Little League team? But yeah, I thought they're only saying
this one. I'll stop there, and then they said it all the time.
I don't remember them saying. I remember seeing the word isotots. My
first question is what's the name of the mattress that margin homer give? Oh?
Instead a slap and tickle at something else? Oh? Oh damn?
What do you do when you're having sex? Generally it's bouncing, giggle,
finish early in sleep. I apologize the apology range from a guy that was
a range of bed card. I'm sorry. I totally get one should be
condoms, right, probably. I just think it was Valentine's Day recently,
and I know I have the right batch of social media buddies because so many
were putting up you those little candy hearts that have got little. So many
people are putting out those with things like test negative or your money's on the
dresser. It's like I'm on a list something like that. It's getting more
and more deplorable. Now. The reason I had such trouble with the with
that question because I had a similar one, okay, which is what is
the brand of mattress that Homer sells? The love Joys. I won't cheat,
I do. That's by the Matcham Moses match by Matrimonium. It starts
with s, doesn't it snoke snuggl luffer, snagge luckers, snug lucks snugger
luck. Yes. I was halfway to it when I was like, that's
not it stopped saying that word. My next question is what are the two
headlines in the sports section. One of them is It's just shame. Yeah,
Boy's shame or something just a shame? Is it just shame? Yeah?
Yeah, okay. The other one is Boy's Era weekends dollars alright.
In your final question, my final question to you is when Homer is in
Costington's, how many shopping bags is he carrying around? Oh that's a good
question. Bit off there. I can say five and you'd be very close,
but it is four. I did also appreciate that because when I got
shopping with Nick and I'm just like, where's the chair? I have sat
in that chair more often than shoes shopping in my I'm like two hours.
She walks out one pair, one pear, one pair. Well, I
just didn't like, I don't want to spend money like Nichola were just doing
Nicholas English accent. I just want one pair. She's just like sometimes she
goes, we go shopping and then I'm just waiting for her to I know
what I want. I look up and advance, go jab high five,
fucking get this movie, Ben, grab something else while I'm there, I'm
out. She says that she bruises shoes for like three hours and walks at
one pair because she's like, I don't want to spend too much money on
myself. I'm like, that's why we're here, spend and spend and spend
exactly. My final question is what is the commentator called the link sausage.
He calls it the death Winger Deathener. Yeah, just get that death winer
away from me, which is I've heard more often not my romantic life.

Don't cancels. All right, so let's get into our review of The
Boys of Bumma. Let's do that. The usual edit was April twenty nine,
two thousand and seven. It was written by Michael Price and this was
the first episode directed by my man Rob Olivo, who was the guy who
was basically took us under his arm, under his wing when we went to
the Simpsons studio Nikio Saudia, she was a production coordinator at the time.
She's like, I have to go do some shit here, Rob. These
guys are Simpsons fans. Mastro and he was like, it's like in his
officer. We sent in his office like an hour and he's like, so
do you like stuff? Basically he showed us how to draw margin. The
video for that is on YouTube. That's that's Rob. Yeah, and he
was the man for you Simpsons nerds out there, speaking of him, see
the big couble cut out there the Simpsons Season five release of the DVD's I
see it. I'm pretty sure that no one listening to this podcast can see
you. No, but on social media this week, so you probably can
see it. Yes, that's well, that's me told. It was seen
by like one hundred thousand people on our Twitter page. But basically he was
the man who designed all of the Simpsons DVD cover art box sets for the
box sets. Yeah, Rob, it's good work, muddy, Yeah,
exactly right. All right, So the episode kicks I was a catch game
for this one. It was Yeah, the couches replaced by four wooden chairs
and good chairs. Yes, pop ghost the wheel. Right. So the
episode kicks off with can you remember mister Davis kicks off with, well,
it's the isotopes. It is the tos. What did I say? Isotopes
is the is the ground topes is the grand version of Iso tots, the
younger version of nice plan on there. Yes, and they were at the
ball game or the ball field springfield, a little league park he warned,
your child is not as good as you think. That's a great sign because
it is so true. Even like when Elliot's like really really good at something,
I'm like, I'm becoming that parent that thinks his kids better than everybody
else. I'm like, he's actually pretty fucking good, Like he bowls me
out cricket. But it's like if I if he then goes some place cricket
with other kids, is he going to be just another average joke? Because
at the moment I think he's pretty good. Keep it on. He could
be the next Beckham. You can be the next and dad, dad Beckham,
and your son's like the next MJ walking around with cigars in his mouth.
Took it personally, but Homer is late due to watching all the hot
dogs in the in the roller. I guess I got the corn and Nelson
throws the balls. What's a picture it punch, isn't it. Yeah,
that's a gag that kind of wore out its welcome pretty quickly. Yeah,
and using it. Yeah, Flanders is the coach. They're one went awy
from the Championshi, they didn't really do anything with this. I thought,
Oh, Flanner's gonna be the coach and then Home is going to replace him
again, but no, Flanners was just always the and it's the only time
you saw him as the coach though it was. And also what was the
deal with the black armbands that kept Willy's naughty hands busy? Yeah, I
know that felt like fellow. I know they're trying to go trying to tricky
to thinking that Willy had passed, but it's like they didn't linger on it
long enough for that to even really sink in. Yeah, yeah, it
was odd, but they just wanted to make a I guess a rapist joke
against really, I guess he is ready roddy peeper as we learned. Yeah,
but they Yeah, they're doing it for Willy for making the black bicet
warmers and then Bart hoggs the catch from Millhouse and Homers. This makes up
for everything that's gone wrong in my life and ever will. Honestly, when
your kid does something in sport, that's how not to this extent, but
you feel us like, yes, everything is good now on my jeans.
Yeah, yeah, he gets that from me, you know, he gets
it from me. Now outs time of the town meeting for the team,
they're all just celebrating Nelson's just I think he's just buying kiss it. But
Bart flushes his ass. Speaking of Bart flushing his ass, he does so
in Bart versus Australia yesterday marth, twenty ninth anniversary of that episode airing,
and I messaged my man, Matt Salmon of Simpson I said, man,
we get the Simpsons a revisit down Under for the thirtieth anniversary of Barbur's Australia
and that phone? Who is now? Bart? Stay humble here? Baseball
cap won't fit over a swelled head, Flanders. These boys have earned the
right to behave like arrogant. Oh skew, we egg the crowd in this
modern day Jedwood, you can do anything right? Are missing the phone?
What glorious ghoul? Then Marges are getting dressed. She's picking out address at
Cossington's, isn't she. Yeah, there's a lot of interesting ideas in here
that just would really explored. As the coach, I'm like, that's a
story been before with the football team. But it's kind of a story,
you're right. I mean that could be a thing about no. No kids
are here to play and have fun. You know, Little League is about
learning teamwork and you know, resilience and all that kind of thing. It's
not necessarily about win win win, And then you know you have home with
his football coach hat on no win win win. That could be interesting,
this whole thing about it's not helicopter parents, but the parents on the side
line are like my son, et cetera, et cetera, Oh, my
daughter, that's extremely batronizing girls complete sport two. Apparently it's funny because it's
not funny. But Ali asked the question the other day. We're watching some
as a band and as a girl singing. I was pixies, right,
and he's like, why why is there a girl singer? And I was
like, oh, she's a singer in the band. He goes to girls
singing bands too, and I was like, wow, it starts from such
a young age. I'm like, yeah, of course they do. And
he's like, oh, because they can play football, and I'm like,
they can't play football. I'm like, it's nice. Their kids are starting
to sort of actually acknowledge, Oh, girls can do shit too. Oh
okay then, and it's just and it's just normal because when I was growing
up, it was like once a girl was like ten, no more football
for you know, And it's just it shouldn't have been that way, but
that's just how it was. It's just nice that kids now just it's normal
for them to see girls doing things. It's also good that Elliott was introduced
to Kim deal at this age. Oh yes, yeah, except we're watching
like a recent concert and he was like, she doesn't look the same.
And I'm like, yeah, that's not Kim, that's why. And I
shed a tear. Is it not Kim in the Pixies? Now? Who's
in the new Pixies. No, it's a one with long hairs. Not
Kim anymore. She's she's gone for good now, Kim apparently not in life
but just offteruring with the Breeders. Probably. Yeah. I saw her when
they came twenty ten, I think played at Festival Hall. I was so
glad it was Kim again. Yeah. I love Pixies. Do you like
Pixies? I don't love them. I saw her alive and thought, yeah,
pretty good. I mean they're one of those bands like everyone like likes
Pixies or I had liked a Pixie song. Yes, yeah, that's pretty
much the case. I wouldn't say, necessarily time to crank up some Pixies
on the way, That is me. But I think a lot of bands
Pixies, like, for example, I've got a blue rave Nirvana playing Paramount
Theater or something, and David was wearing a Pixie shirt. I think they
inspired a lot of bands, but they never really like became household names themselves.
It's like that great line about The Velvet Underground. Oh yeah, they
say the same thing. Yea, yeah, It's like only three people bought
The Velvet Underground's first album, but they all started bands. Yes, and
that was a really good band. But as you were saying before, though,
there was definitely a lot of good ideas in this episode that could have
become their own thing, but they just sort of just forgot about them.
They were used as flavor salt and pepper, a little bit of hot sauce,
but not pepper, just pepper, and not even that good hot sauce.
More like, really we caught some wild yeah mild, and then they
end up coming across like filler as opposed to a story which they could have
become. Yeah, actual good ideas that you would talk about after this episode
has unless, of course you're Dan doing Guy doing four finger discount. But
even like, for example, March here buying a new dress and getting caught
up in the in the hype, that's a story in the stuff as well.
It is, yeah, yeah, but they didn't go with it.
So people living through their kids or trying to get a bit of stolen valor
or second ad glory, yep, that's it. Yep. So they mentioned.
She's mentioned the name and batting average numerous times. The work at his
hums while she waffles on Homer is now he hates shopping. He tries to
find the husbands chair, but Hibbit and Wigham take them because Sarah Wigham is
trying to find a bathing that doesn't make it look horsy. Another mean comment.
I mean, it's not too as mean as the other stuff we get
in this episode, but everything's mean spirited. It is. Although I was
watching this on Disney Plus with the with the closed captions and they had Harsey
in quote marks, So I think you can take that to assume that's Sarah
saying that. Okay, you could say Horsey. Yeah. Yeah. He
doesn't think that it's going to be a while, so it's just him sort
of saying, so it's gonna be hard to find it, but it could
be like you spend three hours shopping shoes. You look good, women,
be we be shamming. Homer then sits on the bed, gets under the
covers, and we will do it. We will do it, and we'll
do it Eddie Murphy themed topic and we can pick Eddie Murhy films and then
we'll just wrick it. So it's natty professor, Well, we'll make it
as niche as possible. It's like Dave Chappelle cameos in films. Is there
any others? It's like it's between this and Connie Yes, of course,
fucking Connair. He's pinball. Holy shit, yeah he is too. That's
a movie. I've been sitting there going, I'm going to revisit this soon
because I loved Connye as a kid. But I'm gonna watch it in twenty
years. I've got to do the I want to do the triple feature of
Face Off, Face Off Conne and I think it's the Rock. I think
that the Rocks are that one. Okay, yeah, they're all from the
sort of that same yeah era. I think it was like, there's another
one for me. That'd probably put in there. Maybe I'm ageddon. That's
more of like a disaster film, though, isn't it. Yeah, good
time, it's good time to be your life. Take us back. Why
I want to watch Deep Rising? I said to Nicola, No, I'm
enjoying this. It's because it's easy to buy into this because you didn't have
cell phones. I mean, you had cell phones, but it wasn't like
you couldn't play ot social media. So like you can buy into the fact
that a ship could go under and no one will be able to communicate and
they'd be missing, and no one would know they've got missing because we didn't
have the Internet yet at it at its peak. You know, you've got
so many shows and movies that they say, say, oh, don't have
coverage. I've got no bars. That's the screen, right is easy out,
that's the escape patch. Yeah. But so Homer's now found the bed
and he's sitting on the bed and he's down to the cover. He takes
his pants off, just getting getting comfortable as you would, and then mister
Costing and wakes He mup, he can't believe it. He slipping into my
store. I initially thought, I mean I looked away for a second and
I started hearing the Costington voice. I thought, is it super intended charmers
going? Because it sounds very similar. It's a ringer, but it's just
a combination of He's meant to be a take of the Star Wars guy,
isn't he, what's the what's the fat guy? The fat leader of the
jar Jar? Yeah, that was that was his whod gimmick to I think
there's always been jows, jolly yeah, pale brokers. Yeah, it's fun
to do, isn't it? It is? How are you? It's poo?
How many are you sleeping in the middle of my department store? Well?
Who wouldn't with an incredible mattress like this? It works with my body's
natural curves and supports my back boobs. That's the best endorsement I've heard since
Mickey Mail for Maypole. I'll take five mattresses. I don't work here,
you do now? Shun more hard now that it's off the championship game and
Lisa one as what as my crowds to see teachers inspire children, And I'm
just like, it's crazy town. Not that unneeded the sound necessary gag,
Yeah, just means for the sake of mean Shelbyville. The bases a loaded,
but they spinfer In is one more ass to win the game. They
hit an easy catch to BT, but he fumbles it. Yeah, it
doesn't go well at all. He Li boots it. He does. He's
the original goat, the original meaning of goat. We started calling it greatest
of all time. This is a shower back to Charlie Brown. They always
refer to him as, Oh, you're the goat, Charlie Brown, which
means you suck. Yeah, I am. I hate the term goat nows
groaps of all time and just you're the goat, or people saying you're the
goat's like going loll like, don't do it, don't say that it's over
you, or people just put a picture of a goat as the murder kind
I'm like, unless, of course, you want to refer to a full
finger discount as the ghost of podcast of course. Yeah. I really liked
the setup though before Butt marked it, Upper Markedt caught the ball. Sorry
of him like lady putting his hat down about the championship. That was a
really cool visual. I like that, but did you know so later in
the episode actually we'll touch it later. Its basically there was an incident with
the Cubs where a fan interfered with a catch, which they take off.
Here is that when Homer catches it. When Homer catches it, yeah,
because they designed the guy wearing just what he was and everything. The guy's
last time is Bartman. Can you believe it? Oh my goodness, oh
Steve Bartman. We'll get to that when we get to that. Okay,
but Barter's dropped the catch. Everyone's yelling at him. It's like watching a
monkey swallow a hand grenade. Harry is always great as commentators and things like
that, as news readers, as his thing. It's really good spot absolutely,
and the crowds were booing. And it is true that we just weturn
on athletes. We can be like a guy can kick a match winning goal.
In the following week he drops the mark, you suck. It's like
last week you loved him. You would have had his children. In Geelong,
we call this Tom Hawks phenomenon. The five years of his life,
it was like, boo, why do we have him replace him? And
now it's like hawks, like, oh, hail the hawk. He w
was a great final he did I'm not sure when Tomahawk became the nickname that
we designated him but t bone, but I think once he started actually kick
goals, being the best, yeah, or being more consistent. It's just
even now he's still a little occasionally inconsistent, but it's just one of those
guys where it's just like you're big, but you're also agile. Now too
is just added this extra element to his game where it's like, fucking he
saves us and what he's throwing ocasionally throwing Jeremy Cameron as well, the other,
yeah, the other one of the best sports. It's like thank you.
But everyone's I'm like, I mean he will be lining up to kick.
We're like, I don't think, just kick. Well. We call
the confidence player here as a Geelong fan listeners, because if tom Hawks misses
his first goal, he's going to miss every goal for the game. If
he sees the first one, we're like, we're gonna win. But also
when he's going for goals on the run or something like that, or you
know, from seemingly impossible angl, it's like, yes, yes, it's
like you're three ft away. No, it's gonna end up in like Winch'll
see that's a very very gelong reference. But take it to me and he's
gonna shank cancel his ship out. Tom Hawgan's by the way we love you
come on the show. Is that is that a term for other sports?
When we say shank, we mean fuck it up? I mean it's it's
traditionally a golf term. Right, are you shaking? Is that he's saying
golf when you're shanky when it goes to the side, Yes, you slice
it, yeah yeah, slice or shank yeah whatever, you suck it up,
you fuck it up. And I guess we've started to put that into
other sports. And speaking of sucking up, butt fucks up here and the
crowd turns him. Of course it is correct. We come back from the
commercial and the crowd are all still billing and it comes up on the sign
throw beer at him. Just it's just it's getting too much. I think.
I know it's just satire, it's just an animated show, but I
think, just being a child, it's a little bit too much. They
haven't done, in my opinion, quite enough to build up why it's so
important. It's important. They need to do a Friday Light. Friday Lights
kind of thing where it's like, oh, the town's self esteem and well
being and of tots, you know, yeah, and it's the ice of
tots. Why do you care so much about this? Yeah? This is
something interesting. I mean, particularly American friends, if you want to let
us know why college football and high school football are so incredibly popular. I
mean, the NFL is clearly popular. People tend to know who Travis Kelcey
is these days, but high school football and college football tracks some really rabit.
It's huge fan bases and followings. I think it's just important because they're
very patriotic, especially from what whenever you say someone where you're from, it's
not just the town, it's the state, everything very much so. So
if you'd like to tell us a bit about this, by all means,
get into the mailbag. That mail bag down. Its a Simpsons mailbag at
gmail dot com. You could also do it on one of our many social
media pages, I'm sure, but then we get mo even saying things like
if you's ruty protection, we wouldn't even be in this situation. I'm just
like, oh Jesus christis is mean? Wigham drives back into it, puts
the roof down. So they can throw more shit at him. We're now
at home and Homer is told to hide the sports section that we mentioned earlier.
Margin tells home, I mean, don't you think I do your job
as a mattress salesman? Oh yeah's see how that goes again. And they're
just knowledging that it doesn't really make sense anymore. He doesn't have a job
at the power plant. It's just what we need him to do this week.
It's not necessarily a gag I hate. But see I hadn't even thought
about it until they pointed it out. It's like, oh, yeah,
that's that's silly. But whatever. I think we're at the point now by
season eighteen, when you're watching these episodes in a row, the whole nuclear
power plant doesn't enter the equation of my mind anymore. Not, it really
doesn't. It's just what's his what's his gimmick for this one? Being that
self aware and sort of Fourth War breaking with it? Sometimes I like that,
Yeah, in this case, it was more like, I see what
you did. They're as supposed to see what you did that. Homer is
now selling beds. He's doing a pretty good job. Who wants to get
one? It's like floating in a river of corpses. He wants to get
away from his kids. The love joys here. You know, I've got
a friend of a friend's sex problem. Man. One of my questions was,
where can they hear Homer in? What other departments? China? Find
China, China, Homer, we have a friend, actually a friend of
a friend the text problem. Hey, Homer, please they can hear you
and find China. Relax. I'm a licensed mattress professional, if there were
such a thing, and I've got the answer to your problems. The Snug
Lucks by Matrimonium ooh sold, and remember your most intimate secrets are safe with
me. Okay, who else is dead in bed? I like to hear
that Homer wasn't necessarily judging them for having shit sex off. He He's just
like, no, no, there's a fixing problem. Yeah yeah, so
his solution driven rather than problem oriented. Yeah yeah, who else is dead
in bed? So again coolness KBBL no official. But then then now the
official Bart Simpson Sucks station and we get the takeoff of Love Stinks, which
is now Bart Stinks. Wasn't that funny? Not really not? But again,
all these things, uh, shouting out things that actually happen in society.
Sorry for the sidetrack. Yeah, the Lovely Luis and I were watching
this three pound documentary about disco dico music. Oh you mentioned this actually about
the rise of it, success of it, and the third episode was the
downfall and then inevitable slight comeback. Yeah. But some dip shit radio DJ
in the States who you know, just look like one of those demon and
weasel in the money. That's gonna be us. By the way, heart
sounds on his keyboard and he's going to money. We've definitely got an airhorn.
Gotta love airhorns. Ah, but he was the guy who basically greaded
the whole disco sucks phenomenon. Okay, and enough sort of aggrieved. Nineteen
seventies version of in Cells got on board and say, yeah, that's right,
disco sex. This is new backing. And you know he took this
and ran with it to the one of both. I can listen to two
genres of music. There's a thing on your radio called it die. You
can turn it and listen to another station. One. You tell me which
music you want to listen to that reminds me of Crement, Why don't you
tell me what movie you want to see? I wish I hear a lot
about the Mister Movie Phone guy that they had in the US. I mean,
I wish we had something like that there in Australia. We sort of
do, but not really. Yeah, but he sort of took that and
ram with was like, Hey, why don't we have a like a baseball
when everyone can bring their disc albums and will blow them up? It's really
why why don't you just promote the music you like? I mean, I'm
at the same time, I'm not the kind of person who's like, why
don't we just talk about those things? But to do the Marge thing of
like, so can't I bet that everybody has the time. That's the greatest
thing is it's so good. It's like one of the perfect marginals. I
kind of bet the horses have a great time. I'm all for constructed criticism.
I'm not necessarily for being a hater. There are times when seeing someone
being a hater is actually kind of fun, but often it's just kind of
man, that's pretty weak sauce man. I did see a great quote from
Taylor Swift this week, right, I know you mentioned talyor Swift I think
might be in the South Part podcast or anything. Was it like four Thing
a Discount is my podcast of choice. That guy Davis sounds like a real
hoty. But she said and then she wrote a song about me because the
question was like, do you care if people are making fun of Lot the
Swifties for dressing up? She's like, I never understood why people feel the
need to make fun of people for having for being excited about something. I
was like, that's true, Like what if someone's excited about something, who
are you to bring them down because you don't like it as well? Just
let them be excited. Who cares? There's so much to be excited about
in this world. Yeah. I was on the tram going to mash Box
twenty right, and the tram was feelingful. People are dress up as Taylor
Swift, and I was just like, good, good, having a great
time. You'll think you'll they're going, hey, matchbox over here. Came
in a little matchbox in my bucket. Twenty of them about start at the
time, and one more and one more? How many is that? Twenty?
Well, one goes missing. It's nineteen dickhead right off supermarket. Well,
we're amusing ourself all this episode's not certainly not doing it. But where
were we up to? Mother? There's the song again, Lisa's this is
a surprise for Bart again. So Homer apparently buried his pet rabbit alive.
What's a lot of fucking need for this line. There's a lot of really
yeah, mean spirits stuff, just unnecessarily mean cruel shit. I just don't
get it anyway. But now she he gets introduced to Joe labout who from
the nineteen forty three World series he messed up as well, another mean thing
Eleanor Roosevelt when she was beautiful, And I was like, what the why
is everything so mean in this? What's going on? But then he mentions
here that he's got the car dealership and the seventeen grandchildren, and he's got
a big home, which to most people would be a great thing, that
would be a signifiers of a life World live with. Grandpa makes fun of
him and then he realizes that he's talking to Bart, and then he yells
at him, and I did enjoy the delivery of whoo who indeed, But
but it's where Bar cries and I was like, I can't enjoy this anymore,
because now you've got a child crying, it's not funny anymore. I
really like all these ideas in theory, I really do. I think they
say something. I think they work, but yeah, it's just the execution
was just not quite right. You just need to turn the dial a little
bit. Yeah, just turn it on a bit. It's probably too many
ideas that they need to be in there. Yeah, I mean, I
think the idea of Joe labout a guy who's like, yeah, I really
went through all this, but you know it gets better and you can bounce
back. Oh wait a minute, you suck, Oh you suck. You
could have everyone gets caught up in the in the fuel of like oh oh
you're the scapegoat or you're the whipping boy. I guess yeah, I've got
to get it on that action. The love Joys are now at the Simpsons
home and Homer comes clean about drinking the holy water blah blah blah, and
they mentioned that the matches failed and they want a refund. I was just
like, what what is this logical connotation? Is pffunity? What's happening?
I did like the line about we tried raising cane, but we weren't able.
I love Joyce about me drinking that holy water. Let me tell you
I had had like a million Doritos, you know the ones with the flame
on the bag. Oh, that begging lion. We're here about the mattress.
What's wrong with it? We tried raising caine, but we weren't able.
Oh I can't. I know what you're doing wrong? Have you tried
after this? I know the mechanics of love making, Homer. You always
a refund rack your chick. They start then getting down on home as bed
as he's right in the check And as we said, and I'm not a
man who believes miracles, and this could resiate our sex life. You do
this shopping and just Helen just getting it done, because Helen clearly likes uh,
getting down, getting busy. Yeah, Homer and Marge just not feeling
it now in their own bed. Something's changed. This here thought didn't work
because it's like something's changed. I can't quite figure it out. I got
rid of the mattress, and I was like, that's not a punchline.
Look, you build it up like he's like, oh, he's going something's
gonna lead to a punchline. But No, it's just him going the mattress.
But then he and Marge mentions that there's money in there. He used
to unbling or whatever. Useless. The love joys, though, are now
loving life at church. I'm looking like this, this little having a great
time. Everyone's enjoying church except for Homer. I would go to church if
this is kind of thing was going down. I always say, like you
watched Sister Act and a ship, Like, if this was church, I
would actually go. It's like a little concert. Oh yeah, just getting
down. Yeah, seeing all these awesome Baptist church and Baptist churches in America
where everything's just going right off. I imagine that's what white people think.
That's hill Song for them. By the way, if you go to Hillsong
and that's your thing, hey, we'll power to you. We're not heading
here. On this episode of We'll Figure Discount, we're talking about how good
it is to like things. Homer is muttering to himself about how he's not
getting anything sexual or doing anything erotic with Marge. Then Lisa wakes to I
hate Bart Simpson painted everywhere all over town. Nowson tells Rod and Newson Flanners
tells Rod to fetch the Thinner from the stay away closet, and Lisa points
out the window and says, look at there, and Bart's just painting it
on a tower. Yeah, where it march just manomally. It needs glasses
for why? Yeah, and like never see him again. It would have
been great if there was a callback to was it Last Temptation Home? Of
course, any shout out the Last Temptation Homer, it's going to be okay
by me. But if it was those glasses that Bart had to wear that
time, I'm a nerd, so man, but you were a happy even
before this moment with oh god, they've been mean to Bart, and you
know Bart's being all sad and all that. This was the stage where it
really sort of becomes toxifizing, the self loathing. Yeah, I don't my
actual note for a ten year old, Oh I don't know about this,
no, yeah, yeah, So he thinks that we can be friends of
everybody now because even he hates himself. And then Wigham says jump and he
does, and I was like, oh, what the hell? Like that
joke worked when it was Hermie starting to commit suicide in Futurama, and I
believe it's better, that says, do a flip, that's funny. But
they had the chief of police say to a ten year old jumb who said
that it's like that doesn't didn't work for me. La Boot tries to catch
him, Note drops him, and Grandpa makes fun of him again. When
the cut to Bart who was in hospital, he needs some peace in quiet,
and then we hear the crowd chatting and then he sucks still outside the
window. I was like, it's just it's not funny anymore, because it's
like, why they're still going with this. It just seems silly. Margin
goes out. She yells at them. Then he's got murder novels, which
Stephen King refers to us, what good scary, fust scary good fun,
scary good fun. Stephen kingkindors is. He points at the sign that says
she thought it was just a catchphrase whatever the meanest tan in Spring and USA.
So it says, yeah, but now she realized it's the truth,
and Moe brings up that, you know, maybe we can play a game
over and over again. I did like this back and forth. Are you
sure I had difficulty envisioning it? Let me get this straight. You want
our boys to play a fake rematch against Springfield so your son can make the
catch he missed and feel better about himself. Exactly. I guess I could.
If you pretend to be my fiance when my mother comes to visit,
Okay, if you pretend to be our chauffeur at my high school, fine,
fine, if you pretend to be a ghost in an old amusement park
I'm trying to buy. We should stop now. Yeah, and Lisa tricks
the commentator into re commentating, Yeah, commentating over again. Yeah, by
what's what's the brand of sage link sausage? But it's dance Oh yeah,
okay, yeah, I don't know what the actual brand is. But the
thing is, though I sometimes watch all footy games. What they do now
is they get players or whatever to commentate the games that have already happened.
And I'm like, how can you genuinely commentate a game when you already know
the result. It's like, how can you? Just everything feels like fake
excitement. It's like they're not doing like an audio commentary. They're actually commentated
like the game they're watching for the first time. And I'm like, but
you know who wins this? It's just seemed weird. It's like, what's
gonna happen next? And I was like, we all know what happens next.
You can only win do an audio commentary. It's like, well,
that's good play by someone. So they are always good at this. Yeah,
but they want to actually like commentate like they're in real time. It's
just it's a bizarre concept that mends weird and I don't like it. Margin
Homer and then breaking into the love Joy's house, this whole thing could have
a story, you know, like it didn't need to be tied it's it's
ourn episode. I mean, did they be tied in with this one?
Yeah? It could have been a sort of semi singal to Grandpa, this
is sexual anequacy or something like exactly, yeah, Homer, is it the
Pink Panther music? What's what's No, that's just like general kind of suspense
suspense music. Okay, But did love Joys get home? You put on
the Michael Bolton sayday, I'll get the edible vestments. Oh my god,
how dare you break into our house to file our bed and smash our family
photos with your foot? Well, excuse me for being a powerful yet careless
lover, we lovejoy. Our marriage needs this bad Our marriage needs it more.
Well, I am reminded of the story of wise King Solomon, you
would be. But then they decide they're going to cut the bed in helf,
They're going to share the mattress, and I was just like, I
don't think this works in any form. No, it just I feel like
they did this just so they can make the joke about the creel Chase sandwich
much yeah, which turns home, are on the way home and they decide
to have sex behind the billboard, just like their honeymoon was it or something?
I don't know, but that the same bummers there. Then he calls
him fat. Anyway, it's now time for the fake game, and they
made the excuse of they dusted the plate with a non regulation brush. Millhouse
almost spoils it then, but just keeps dropping the catchers just doesn't doesn't work,
but it's another try. He hit it by excellent accident, not by
design. As the commodator says, it's deja vous all over again, which
I remember, I'm trying to remember the first time I heard that. But
it was done as a joke because deja who is already all over again.
But now it's sort of become a phrase that people actually used, is it
Okay? I don't think I've ever heard it before. I'm trying to remember
a first hurt. It might have been in Scream. I found like,
is that the second time Scream has been mentioned? Yeah, West Craven,
Yeah, I want to watch the new I haven't watched a new one yet.
It's in my list. I experienced deja vu at the Matchbox twenty concept.
I I've experienced like three or four times, not the last month.
It is so weird. It really is. Now. Yeah, I'm not
a big believer in the paranormal or anything like that, but at the same
time, I can't wholly discount it because I've had so many deja vu incidents
in my life. And it's like, I was like, I've seen you
walk down and you were holding that and I told nick Nicko was like,
it's not a thing, and I was like, but it is. I've
been here and it's only for a split second. Ye. Something was like,
that's happened, and you feel it, Yeah, oh that's glitch and
the matrix stuff, and it makes it starts to make you think about it.
I looked around. I was like, what, Yeah, you start
going all god quantum mechanics or you know five D you know universes, and
yeah, bizarre man, bizarre. But it's basically it's Barkkeets sucking up again.
Eventually he catches the ball when it's sunrise, isn't it very How many
times are they like, seventy eight times? Seventy eighth time? Yeah,
that's gonna be one of my two of your questions actually. But then we
cut to the future and Bart is sort of bragging about how it did this,
and Meal has comes clean, bar stunts crying again. Millhouse says,
no, I was just lying that time, and Barsh's a bit of a
jerk, and then Homer and Marge at the ghost, which we discussed earlier.
That's the end of the episode. It is indeed the end of the
episode. So I do I do think like there was plenty there that they
could have run with. I think you take out thirty percent of the meanness
the coolness of this, it probably would have worked better. I just think
it just the vibe of it was just so hard to sort of get behind,
or if you're going to bring in that cruelness which I think actually you
might need because if you're going to make the point about how easily we turn
on our heroes when they fuck up, and we do, Yeah, who's
a hero that you've turned on? For me? It's just footy players usually,
Oh, it's usually footy players. It's very sporting. I think I
think we tend to do it with sport more ball, though you also see
I mean, if you're talking about quote unquote the arch it's usually an actress
or a singer, and it's usually a female performer that it happens to.
Everyone went after Anne Hathaway for a while. Yeah, people turned on Jennifer
Lawrence for a while. Well, Britney Spears is probably one of the best
example they turn on an example body, Yeah, Lindsay Loewen. There's very
few people who have been termed Tom Hanks probably one who's just managed to survive
everything. Rob Williams survived everything. Yeah, oh no, but for a
good long while there. You know, people like look, I was among
them, probably Wims. You're indisputably funny. You're making a lot of shit
movies. You know you're or you'll you really want people to like you,
don't you row and you're making any deeds, which is unfortunate part. And
yeah, then when you look back and I say, oh Jesus Christ,
we were Dick's. Yeah, yeah, you're right about Tom Hanks. But
even then you've got a lot of conspiracy theorists who are really trying to say,
you know, Tom Hanks was in he went to Epstein's private seat children.
Yeah, yeah, he drinks the blood of children. And like you're
going to the most not obvious target, but the most sort of unlikely target.
Mister Rogers is doing it. Yeah, it's just like because people just
know I could be this good, So yeah, it happens. I mean
in Australia we call it the tall Poppy syndrome. To some degree, it's
Australia in general. Yeah, what do we learn, Bomber, What do
you learn from the episode of Davis? What I learn from this episode that
before that poor old baseball incident, Eleanor Roosevelt quite the hotty. I learned
that never have photo frames around the bed, especially when you're a powerful lover,
powerful lover. That's the only thing Hover seems to have going for him
is that he seems to be good in the sack. Go for the gusta.
Yeah, did he say careless but powerful? Careless but powerful? Yes,
strap yourself in and fill the g's. From day forward, your name
will be all right. It is time for the New Name Championship. It
has returned for season eighteen. The current leader board stands at this mister Davis
in first position. We have, of course, our man Philip Jay Hawkins
in twenty three points, Kyle muldoon on sixteen, and Luck McKay on thirteen.
I'm pretty sure that Philip J. Has been sitting through the last few
episodes going when can we get to the fireworks factory? And by which I
mean my inevitable victory? Yes, maybe let's find out what happens this way.
Nothing on earth, nothing in life, is inevitable. But having said
that, let's see if you get three points this time, one point goes
to enemy of the plate. That is clever Kyle. He's now in seventeen
points and he's six behind the Philip J. Hawkins. Keep it up,
clever Carl, There's still more points to be had. Let's see he wins
the next one. By the way, a lot of good names for this
episode. I gave Dando three alternatives just in case, because sometimes double up
because you don't know that's the thing we do, well I do. Sometimes
it's like Philip Jay Hawkins can't get one, two and three votes with staffs,
but he's so good. Yeah, so we do a blind so I
had to throw in a few all turns just in case, and we had
a lot to choose from this time around. Yeah, two points go to
the unnatural That is a newbie newby j Jack Gurdham. Jake, did you
say jet jet or TJ E double T jet jet? Yeah, let's call
it good jet jet. Yeah, we go for two points. Well done.
Jet's been around for a one Yeah, of course, yes, it
was the first time little board for this season though. Correct. Yeah,
but I mean I'm always I remember seeing that name around going having this exact
same just got dajavu. Interesting spelling. So two points to you. Who's
going to get the three though, let's see, let's find out. Three
points go to Lundable it is Jay, Austin Williams, j Philip, it
is Justin Williams. Well so phil Jaden any points this week. So Justin
Williams with the three points, which puts Justin now on nine points. So
he's now outright fourth position. Well done, justin, it's still a bit
of a rad There's still four more weeks to go. There's twenty two episodes
this season. That was season so nineteen twenty year four episodes left, which
means there was plenty of points to be had. And Kyle Weldoon, you're
only six points behind. So you guys still do this, Kyl, you
can do it. You're very clever, clever, you can do it.
Bail is here alright, Mailbey questions, mister Davis will pick a couple because
we're running little bit long on time. I'm here. Uh well, this
one's from Harrison mcaul. Is this the worst episode of the Simpsons in brackets?
Yes, and Andrew JP says, even worse the Guy Davis's favorite episode,
even worse than Guy Davis's favorite episode Simpsons Safari. And then Harrison said
facts. So therese are a lot so much questions as statements. I was
like, we have a lot of questions. Oh no, it's just a
conversation between Harrison and sorry to butt in guys. Andrew JP says, what's
your favorite sports redemption story? Athlete who failed in the big game? It
recovered and became stronger. See what about football inside the episode football quite thou
this podcast? But do you remember in two thousand and seven when Long won
that drought baking, drought breaking premiership? Do I stevj was about to get
delisted for being a rascal off the field correct and ended up winning the best
on field in the Grand Finals. You know, Yeah, they love a
good redemption story in the a I don't they the like you know, what's
his name, Dustin Martin. At one point he was threatened to stab a
waitress with chop sticks and then he's like the greatest player of all not a
role model, kids, but still r DJ for you right, Oh yeah,
absolutely one of the great comeback stories. Yeah, yeah, that would
be the ultimate comeback story, would it not. It really is, And
it's sort of a comebacks iron man. It's a comeback story with multiple levels
as well, because speaking people along for the ride with him as well down
the door he tried with Mel Gibson. Everyone's like, mel Gibson helped me
come back. So it's like he's paying it back and paying it for I'd
like to he had the balls to just do it anyway. You didn't care
about whether people would care that he was like talking up mel Gibson. He's
like, this motherfucker helps me. I'm going to try and help him.
Absolutely, I'm not sure if this actually applies, Andrew JP. It's not
really so much a redemption story, but it's a good underdog story, one
that I really dig going way back into the archives back to nineteen seventy.
But it was the AFL then VFL Grand Final. I think Carlton was behind,
and they brought on this player who wasn't wasn't really much of a star
his a guy named Ted Hopkins. He came on in the final court and
he just fucking blitzed it. He kicked like four goals or something, and
he basically just turned the whole game around. I remember reading that one as
a kids like it Ched Hopkins, you selling married? So yeah, I'm
a sucker for that kind of story. But yeah, yeah, certainly in
non sporting arenas. Yeah, oh DJ, what a redemption yet? One
percent? One more question here before we go this one here, Andrew Andrew
Kelly favorite alternative for a mattress. I guess that means for getting down and
funky, oh or maybe just sleeping. What's your favorite. Do you have
a hammock at home? Maybe? Or couch? I have enjoyed I don't
know about sleeping in a hammock, but I've enjoyed many a lazy afternoon a
hammick. They're great. There's nothing like a good couch sleep. Our couch
is fucked now, so we can't but for a while though, when we
first had Holly, I was on the couch like six months because Holly was
in the room and she was always crying and she couldn't sleep and blah blah.
I used to love the couch, I think because I on it so
often, I fucked it? That could that could well be that? And
getting down of funk and the catch fox it up as well. There is
no question. He's like, where is catch broken? Because I'm careless and
powerful lover. But if you're talking about that alternative as well, I'm gonna
have to quote Humpty hump from Digital Underground. One's got busy in a burking
bathroom? Ooh nice? Really No? I never did? Ah had a
wank at a macis the next episode of season eighteen? We should be reviewing?
What does that line? The people? Please, sir, this is
a Wendy is Crook and Ladder. Now, I remember enjoying this one,
said, look the brief synopsis here for this one Margina Parenting Magazine. But
did I watch this one? I remember I watching through the rest of like
season eighteen. I remember enjoying it. Anyway, It'll be surprised when I
revisit it for the for the podcast next week. So Cook and Ladder with
the next season eighteen episode we would be episode nineteen. This has been our
