Speaker 1: Hi everybody, and welcome to the Renee Stubbs Tennis Podcast. Guys, I'm alone again this week, but that's okay because you've sent in a lot of questions for me to answer on the old social network. I do appreciate you writing to me, I really do. It's it's time out of your day and I know that you like to get answers on these things, and so I'm here to provide that for you. But can I just say, what a fabulous two weeks or a couple more week really for I mean, I wouldn't say week, I mean say a month for Yannick Sinner. I mean he's just playing off his face, he is playing. I mean I did say I don't know if you know this, but I did say that he's my favorite to win the French Open. I just feel like he's got something to prove after what happened last year year. I really do feel like he knows that he let one go by not winning the French last year. But credit to Carlos who never, never, never gives up, and there was the other way around this time. Janick came back in the second set in Monte Carlo and got the job done. Just I feel like he's hitting the ball a little bit bigger. Feel like carlos Is serve is not doing enough damage, you know. And I know that he changed his serve at the start of the year, but you have to think maybe, I don't know, it's just he doesn't quite have the same pop as Yannick. And clearly Yanick, you know, has just a little bit more firepower, not only in the serve but in the forehand. He was just crushing balls all over the place and taking advantage of certain things. And I and the and the interesting thing is the variety that Carlos Alcarez possesses, which makes him so good on clay and grass and all these sorts of things and the natural surfaces, because you have do have to come up with some you know, a little bit more ingenuity, you know, a little bit more sort of crafty stuff. It usually helps Carlos. But having said that, the dude kind of messed up with the drop shots. And as good as the drop shot is on occasion, oh my god, he hits the four hund drop shot, it's just like out of this world how good it is. And you have to be able to hit that shot on any surface really, but particularly on clay, because when players get so far behind the baseline, you know, it's hard to hit through them, right, And it's very hard to hit through someone like Yannick because he's so good at moving from the back of the court. He slides really well. He course can turn defense into offense so easily, so quickly. But Carlos kind of there was some drop shots that got him into trouble. There was one I believe it was too all in the first set tiebreak. He chose to hit the drop shot, did not hit a good one. Yanick runs up, wins the point, gets a mini break, and then runs away with it. I mean his serving, Yannick's serving in tie breaks, and the way he's playing tie breaks these days is just it's like Novak, you know, six years ago, when he could barely lose tie break. It was just unbelievable how well we played that. And that's that's a sign of confidence. That's a sign of somebody who knows, in the biggest occasions he can come up with the goods, that he can play solid, that he'll beat somebody trying to be more creative or whatever it is. And you know, look if Carlos can pull those shots off, sure he's going to win a lot of those matches. He's probably going to beat Yanick. But but you know, if they're not on and they're a little bit off as they were. You know, he tried to hit a drop shot on break point in the second set and he missed that drop shot, And a lot of it is because Yannick, you know, he runs everything down. He tries to run for the balls. Even when Carlos would hit a great drop shot that you know anybody in their right mind wouldn't even try and run for, Yanick would try and run it down. And that just builds pressure over time that every time you go to hit a drop shot, your opponent's not just quitting and they're just not giving up. They're not just like, oh, too good and not trying for it. I mean, Yanick is running for There was one in particular, on a really big point and he had no chance of getting to this drop shot, and he still tried to run it down. And so every kid at home has to understand just because you think you might not be able to get there, it doesn't mean you don't run for it. And it drives me crazy when I see kids or players that don't run for drop shots. I mean, it's one thing if you're twenty feet behind the baseline, hit an amazing drop shot and you know you have no chance of getting it. But if you have even the remotest chance, the remote chance of getting to a drop shot, you run for the ball. It drives me crazy when I work with players that don't do that. I mean, there was one player I worked with and I said, if you don't run for that, I'm going to make you. I'm going to drill you. So you have to run them down. And the funny thing was, once we sort of highlighted it, then she started running those down really well. So there is this thing called practice, and if you don't then there's threats. But having said that, look, Janick just closed the match out. He came back and broke back in the second. He served it out beautifully, and it's just got to give him so much confidence. But can I just say, and this was kind of being highlighted a little bit on some social media people that have never played tennis or you know, commentate on tennis or podcast on tennis or whatever it is, and some people are sort of giving Carlos shit for like, he's too nice, he's taking the loss too well. It's like, listen, if any of you watched the Netflix documentary, one of the things that's very important for Carlos al Kaz is that he must be happy when he's playing tennis, because if he's not happy, he's not playing well. And he talked about that, and his coach talked about that recently when he didn't play well in Miami and he lost, and one of the reasons was because he said to his coaches, like basically, he didn't want to be there, he didn't want to play. He was not in a good friend of mine. And if he's not in a good friend of mine, he's not a machine. He's very much a very feeling, emotional young man. And I mean, listen, I can honestly say, I look, I don't know him like a brother, I don't know him like a best friend. But I feel like I know Carlos in some regards. I mean now and again we do. He actually writes me back on Instagram when I write to him. You know, when I see him in person, he is the nicest guy you could possibly ever meet. Yanick is the same they're very different. Yanick is more stoic, more quiet, more reserved. He's from northern Italy's sort of more Austrian type of personality, whereas you know, Carlos is your typical very Spanish, fun loving, outwardly emotional, emoting person. And so for people to say, oh, he's you know, he's too nice, and he's watching Yannick jump into the pool and you just feel like he's not taking the lost very well. It's like, listen, one of the things that I know I learned from Roger Federer is that look, Roger hated losing as much as anybody, but he didn't take it on. It wasn't like he was going to be depressed about losing. And I think the most important thing for Yanick for Carlos is to be happy, and if he's not happy, he's not going to play well. Now you can argue all you want that he lost the final, it was certainly wasn't because he's not a nice because he's too nice a guy. The bottom line is these two both are incredibly nice guys. And Carlos's words to Yanick when he shook hands with him was clay hard caught grass. It doesn't matter. You're like basically on any surface, you're kicking my butt these days and you're winning on every surface. To me, that's just a sign of respect. Because let me tell you something, Janick Sinner knows in a couple of weeks time, if he's going to win the French he's more than likely going to have to go through Carlos Alcarez in five sets, and five sets is no joke, and Carlos al Karaz will go into the French Open knowing that to beat him in five sets is the toughest test in the world, okay, And so the most important thing for Carlos going into any big tournament, he has to be in a good frame of mind. And so for me, if he's happy, if he's giving him kudos and he's like happy for Yanick and saying the things that he's saying to him at the trophy ceremony, then that's on him. If he wants to do that, Like, if he wants to be happy and he's happy for somebody else, then all the power to him. Look at the way Yana candled losing the French Open last year. I have never in my life and I can honestly say this, I have never in my life seen a person, man or woman lose one of the most traumatic matches that you could ever lose at a major being two sets to love up dominating five to three love forty on your opponent's serve, and I don't think he had lost serve in that match. Then goes down, loses his serf and loses the game and loses the set, and then subsequently loses one of the greatest matches I've ever seen, and gets up onto the mic and is the most gracious kind human being I've ever seen and heard after losing a match of that magnitude, after having that many match points and serving for the match, losing, What did that do for Yanick Sinner? Oh? That just made him a month later when Wimbledon. Because these two guys, they don't see a loss as like a terrible thing for them. They see it as a learning opportunity to get better. And both Carlos and both Yanik have had these moments over the last few years where you think, oh, one's got the upper hand. I mean, you would say six months ago that Janick was kind of losing it a little bit. Didn't win the US Open. Carlos wins the US Open. You know he doesn't win, you know the Australian Open, Carlos Windsley Australia. Oh, Yannick's having a bad year. I mean I was saying it a little bit. I wasn't saying it, but I was like pointing it out that he wasn't having the year that he would want it. And look what's happened. He's a dominating force now in men's tennis again. Now I would go as far as to say in three months time, we could be saying the same thing about Carlos. The bottom line is these two both have to be happy. They have to keep working hard, and they have to keep one upping each other because nobody else is doing it. That is for damn sure. So for me, I love that these two respect the hell out of each other, that they handled their losses and wins with incredible grace. And so for me, I can't get enough of these two playing against each other because it's just spectacular tennis. It's handled so beautifully between the two of them, And so for me, I can't say enough about both of them. And if Carlos wants to smile and be happy and encourage Janick Sinner to jump off that plank into the pool then let him do it. So for me, that's just awesome. Another little person that sort of put her hand up again and said, don't worry, don't forget about me. It's been a bit of a disastrous six to twelve, you know, eight months since dominating at the start of last year. But Mira Andreva gets a win in a really tough three set match, and I got to give a lot of kudos to Popopova for getting to the final. You know, she was playing great the first set. She was playing off her face. There is no question that it looked like for a second or two there that she might be winning in her home country because she represents Austria, and so for me, that was like a really great effort from her to almost get the victory there. She's young, she's twenty five years of age. Obviously mir Andreva's younger than her, but she's had so much more experience. So for me, it was just Mia Andreva sort of keeping her shit together. We know that she's had these issues over the last eight months of getting very down on herself, but she didn't get down on herself. She was a little bit, as we say in Australia, it's a little stroppy in the first set, but I would be too, getting my ass handed to me six' to. One but you, know Poto pover kind of fell off a little bit very early in the second set. There it was like about two wall WHERE i think Poto pova just missed an opportunity to sort of get ahead in that second set early because she felt like she needed, to just because of the experience Of andreva, winning you, know not only a tournament Like lynz but even bigger tournaments than. That you, know she has the ability to be able to step up and she did, that and she handled the pressure early in the third. Set you, know the crowd was certainly on pot Of pova, side as they should being a hometown. Player BUT i just thought That mira handled all of that, really really. Well it was interesting That conchita wasn't, there but you, know obviously we Know conchetas and her usual team weren't, there And zula as well as a, trainer but sometimes you need to have that space away from your coach and having someone else there to give you sort Of and she talked about that they were watching on, television and you, know can she can't go every single. Week she does have a life of her. Own BUT i think it's sometimes good to have that separation away from each other so you can sort of because you, Know conchie's rud like a second mum to, Her so you start yelling and screaming at people that you you tend to yell and scream at the ones that you love the, most which is kind of, crazy but you, KNOW i sort of understand her. Crazy but so a good week For Potter, pover you, know a week that she's going to really. Remember that'll help her ranking very much. So but for, Me Mira andreva sort of letting everybody know that she. Is she's back in some. Ways one THING i do want to critique pot to pover. OUTFIT i, KNOW i can't Believe i'm doing. THIS i can't Believe i'm even talking about. This you, know we shouldn't critique one another as, women BUT i come, on you got to wear a. SHIRT i don't understand this bras sports bra, thing like when you're playing a, match like that's what you wear under the. Shirt and, look she got a great, buddy so most tennis players. Do BUT i don't. Know give me your. THOUGHTS i know you're gonna give me your. Thoughts you're probably gonna rip me for saying, this but and it's not BECAUSE i, mean that's when you get at the. BEACH i just think on a tennis, court it's JUST i don't. Know and she's not the only one that does, it by the, way there's a lot of players that do. IT i just, THINK i don't. KNOW i don't. Know come at, me give me your. THOUGHTS i just think that you, know at some point you've got to put a shirt on and play some tennis and not necessarily be all about showing the abs. Off all, right let's get to your, questions because she had some good ones today today And i'm, really AS i, said thankful for you sending them in. Slice and what is your biggest regret from times of your playing? Career? Oh good, Question, HM i have so. Many one of the biggest regrets is THAT i didn't believe in myself and my singles early enough in my. CAREER i may HAVE i could have probably worked a little bit, harder but it wasn't so much working. Harder it was more along the lines of not having the right people around. Me WHEN i was, younger And i'm talking about like eighteen nineteen, TWENTY i was a little bit lost. THERE i didn't have the money to be able to pay for you, know great. Coaching but then ONCE i started making a bit of, money AND i MEAN i was always a good doubles, player SO i was starting to make a bit of, money AND i started sort of investing in, myself AND i bought a house In florida AND i started working out there with a coach Called Ray, ruffles AND i was surrounded by great. Players BUT i guess my biggest regret is THAT i didn't sort of invest a little bit earlier in. That and another one is a semi finals of The French. Open it's a Story i've talked about quite a. BIT i got a little bit a tated to, stay say the, least and tried to tube an opponent because she basically lied about me hitting her with a ball and you, know cost us the point and all this sort of, stuff and it really really pissed me off so much because she was quote unquote you, KNOW i wouldn't say close, friend but definitely a. Friend And i'll. NEVER i sort of never really got over, that and THEN i tried TO i tried to hit her at some point on a really big point and it cost as the. Set it was set point and then it went on to losa set in the. Match and it was the one major title THAT i didn't win was The French open AND i was playing With Lisa. Raymond she went on to win it later on in her, career but you, know it stopped me winning the calendar grants at the all Four Grand, slams and it was just a it was a mental lapse and it helped me in the future BECAUSE i didn't let it something like that ever affect me like that ever. Again but there's certainly a massive regret in my. Life so, YEAH i, MEAN i have a, view but those are two THAT i can think of at the top of my. Head there's some decisions THAT i made to play with certain players and, things and WISH i could go back and change some of. Those but look, overall after a twenty two year, CAREER i GUESS i didn't make too many terrible, mistakes but, certainly certainly those few ones THAT i do, remember all, right Garam, HAWA i think that's how you say the name at Garam. Hawa can you speak to the different the difference Between european And South american players on. Clay both regions produce the best clay, quarters yet they have different, techniques, Mentalities any thoughts beyond the obvious economic disparities between the two, regions tar much anyella? Anyali. Nyally, wow that's a great. Question that's Something i've never really thought, about to be, HONEST i think a lot of it is social economics in a lot of, ways AND i think one of the reasons, is much Like, Australia South america is a long way away from really a lot of like really good tennis Nest you can go From South america and go to The United, states for, example to get tournament, play but to go To europe it's really expensive to fly over. There so you, know you're basically playing against people in your own. Country and you think About, EUROPE i, mean if You're, swiss you're driving two hours and you're playing In, italy or You're, french you're driving four hours or two hours and you're In, Spain and SO i just think the proximity in the ease of being able to get Around europe is you're playing against the best of the best In europe from all, countries, right and SO i think that that really does help you think About, italy think About, Spain france and all these countries that they just can get in their car and drive to a junior tournament and play against the best players in the. World that's hard to do In South, america you, know if you're In Buenos, AIRES i mean it Is South america is. Massive it's Like. Australia it's like trying to go and play the best player and you Know perth and when you're in live In, sydney that's a six hour, flight, right SO i, think and you, know then when you want to go and play In, europe it's a twenty four hour flight For. Australians it's a long flight for someone In Buenos aires to fly over To. Europe SO i think some of that has to do with. It and it does get you, know rather cold down there as, well so you, know playing a lot indoors as you are In. Europe but you, know it's a great question something THAT i hadn't really thought about, it BUT i think maybe that's part of it is just the proximity of how close everything is In europe and you're playing against the best all the, time so that could be part of. It but a really good, question all, Right Gary, lindbergh in your playing career, singles did you ever receive a serve so deep that it hit you on the fly and the point was awarded to the? Server, Gary, no IF i got hit on the fly by a, SERVE i probably should not be a professional tennis player because you should be able to see that come off your racket real, quick to be able to get out of the. WAY i have been hit on the bounce of a. Serve When Bob bryan absolutely tagged me on a serf in my, GUT i couldn't get out of the. WAY i didn't know whether to go left or, right and you, know you had that beautiful lefty serve AND i kind of panicked AND i was like back and forthand, ah and it just whacked me right in the. Gut and he was so. Apologetic he's, like oh my, God i'm so, sorry And i'm, Like, bob you just hit me on a. Serf you don't need to. Apologize i'm more embarrassed at. Myself So, Gary, No i've never been hit on the fly with a. Serf, Okay Jim nast twenty three? Simple would you consider Coaching Sloan? STEVENS i would consider coaching any player if they asked. Me, Look sloan's A Grand slam. CHAMPION i always felt like she should have won two or three at Least grand slams in her. Career BUT i think she's still getting coached by my Buddy Kamal. Murray so you, know, listen say. Never let's put it that, way all, Right, phil The aussie versus gb, Tie where do you think it went wrong for? Us why Does ellen And storm not play together on the? Tour should Have jones played Over? Berrel? LISTEN i never question any decisions that Captain Sam stozer or Coach Nicole pratt. DECIDED i, actually to be quite honest with, you YOU i didn't see the, matches BUT i would imagine that when you play your first match For australia Like talia or you, know you, know one of your first matches For, australia it's nerve wracking and it doesn't matter how good you're. Playing you, know it's a lot of, nerves a lot, of you, know and and and, look sometimes you handle it and sometimes you. Don't emerson's a great young, player but you, Know Kim berrell's had a lot of experience playing Fed, cup playing For. Australia you, Know it's it often depends on head to head matchups and how players, feel and also so how they're playing in the. Week they practice against each other all the time in the, week and Maybe kim was playing, better and so you have to make those decisions really. Quick and as far As ellen And, storm they, do they have played on tour. Before they just don't play great. Together so, yeah it's. Unfortunate it was an unfortunate, loss that's for. Sure And i'm sure all the players feel terrible about not getting the job done In. Melbourne, Okay Mark, Tessier when Will mouhova finally Beat? GoF does Indoor clay give her a chance assuming they meet this? Week Indoor, CLAY i guess helps her a little. Bit AS i, SAID i think she needs to junk it up a little bit. MORE i think she needs to use a slice. MORE i think she needs to hit some higher balls from time to time. HERSELF i think she just needs to junk it up a little bit, more and you, know she has to take chances Against coco because if she, doesn't she's gonna get chopped again Because coco's so comfortable in, clay and she's clearly very comfortable playing Against Carolina. Makova SO i did talk about this a couple of weeks, ago BUT i think That carolina needs to use the slice a lot more and vary the pace of. Ball, Okay Leslie, broadhead why do women not alter positions by going back like the men do aka against the big server Like. Rebakna that's a good. QUESTION i don't understand why players don't vary their return positions all the time. Either you. Know the one thing is that the guys have more top spin on their, groundstrokes so it's kind of like it's a little bit easier for them to hit that shot deep and then run to the open. Court and you, know, look the guys are a little bit. Quicker they are able to cover the court sometimes a little bit. Differently but to be quite honest with, YOU i don't understand it. Either you, Know rebeckina can just hit a corner of the court so, well so if you go out too, far she can find the corner and just ace. You but it is a bit of a conundrum for me that players don't vary where they. STAND i know that some players do try and do that from time to. Time someone Like coco can do it because she's so bloody fast and she has that, nice, high loopyforehand returns from time to. Time but, yeah it's a good, question and it's a question THAT i think more coaches need to sort of figure out for their players how to change. It it also depends like someone like A Jess pagoola is never going to do it right because she hits them all so. Flat it's very difficult for her to return from that far back in the. Court and you, know she's an attacking, player so she can't let the ball get you, know she can't be that far behind the. Baseline that's just not how she can play good. Tennis, OKAY, Jk let's get to the next. ONE. Jkv what do you think of eagers coaching? Change, well time will, tell my, friend time will. Tell, look, obviously this is a guy that worked with many, players Including Ruffhiel, nadal and you know he's a clay court. Guy he sort of understands that, thinking AND i always say we'll wait and see the results will tell the story more than. Anything BUT i, think, Look i've Been i've spoken about it quite a. BIT i think that there's no doubt that she needed a, change you. KNOW i think that she probably would have had that change if she had Won wimbledon last. Year but, yeah we'll. See time will, tell, Friend time will. Tell, Okay Aretha. Connery shouldn't tennis ban mts all? Together shouldn't it just be survival of the, fittest no antics? Allowed and how about THE. Hc Clay grass? Split shouldn't it be well? Revised, well first of all that, look the medical timeouts are a difficult, one, right because how do you distinguish if someone falls over and, say, look this happened to. ME i THINK i probably called the trainer in about the twenty two years THAT i played on. TOUR i THINK i called the trainer two or three, times and one was one time WHERE i, thought, WELL i did actually tear ligaments in my finger WHEN i fell on the, court and so the trainer came out and taped it up and wanted to make sure it was. Okay AND i think in the. End the bottom line is most players use the medical timeouts legitimately and have sort Of AND i understand what you're, Saying, well too. Bad you, know if you've hurt, yourself then you should have to just deal with it and get on with. It and, yes you could ultimately say, that but for the benefit of the player and the benefit of the, sport it's better to have them, around, right not have them further injure themselves OR i, mean whatever you want to say about. IT i, mean, yes you, could sure we could throw that out, there but it would be a, shame wouldn't. It because we've had trainers go out and actually work on players that legitimately have an, issue and you, know they come back and win a match and maybe go on to win the. Tournament do we want to change that? ASPECT i don't. KNOW i, MEAN i always believe in the good in, people AND i always believe that most of the time when you do call a medical time, out hopefully it's for the right. Reasons but, unfortunately, yes there are. PLAYERS i know a, player former player that used to do it all the time and we ended up calling a sort of like a joke a rule after her because she used to use it so. Much but, yeah, unfortunately so there are players out there that take advantage of, it and you use it in a way that's. Terrible as far as the hard, court clay and grass, SPLIT i, mean that's a tough, one right because you, know we're In europe And european clay is so amazing and then the grass is so. Amazing could we split it? Up, yeah but how are you're going to go from clay to? GRASS i, mean clay to hardcourt to back to. Grass, look it's just you, know we players, adjust and we adjust as, surfaces and hopefully everyone's taking care of themselves to the point that they can take care of, themselves you, know and do it. Well, okay next, question let's get to. Undress. Romero what are your thoughts On Roland garrere still not adopting electronic line calling? Undress your question is, great AND i don't understand it. Either and the people that, say, well it's a little bit more difficult on clay because of this and this reason and that, REASON i don't. Care, honestly the machine is going to call it right way more than a human, eye AND i have had it so many times where an umpire will come out of the chair look at a ballmark and be like be able to, out And i'm, like what do you what it's touching the line or you know the, Opposite, oh it's it's in WHEN i know it's. Out and SO i would rather a machine tell me because Then i'd had no one to argue. With AND i think that's the thing about electronic line calling that is so awesome for these players, now is that you can literally get on with the match and like there's no. Arguing there's no because and also it can happen to my opponent like someone's, like, well you, know the machine's not always. Correct, well that might be the, case but at least it's correct most of the time for the same for the different. Players, no you, know and no. One because the thing is linesmen choke as, well like if it's a big point and they're like sitting there and they're, like see the ball and SOMETIMES i mean the amount of times you, know a player would hit a kick, sir for, example and in their eyes and a linesman may see that and be, thinking, oh it's going. Out you, know they've already pre. Judged they're just probably going to go, out and then sure enough it lands in and they've already and they call, it and you're just, like how do you call that? Out you, know because in their mind they're already, like, oh that looks like it's going to go, out or the same with the baseline. Shot, so as far As i'm concerned to answer your, QUESTION i don't. Understand and it would, really as a, player really pissed me off THAT i had to deal with that still and deal with these umpires running out of the chair and being, like, yeah that ballmark's. Out i'm like what? Anyway so, YES i don't. Understand, Okay Ohio amy. Eight why didn't top us or Net pro ever make A Renee dubs sports? CARD i don't. Know that's a good. Question maybe BECAUSE i wasn't good. ENOUGH i don't. Know let's let's, uh let's contact them and see if we can get a retro og card out there of. Question, look you got to give him a month or two to get his sort of you, know feet wet again and get out there on the cord and trust the. Leg BUT i certainly, hope you, know he can win a few, matches get his, confidence but it's going to take a. WHILE i would certainly if he comes back and wins matches and gets right back into it like riding a, bike. Kudos he certainly has pushed the barriers like big. TIME i, mean the things that he's been doing has been. Incredible so it'll be nice to have him back out. There but, honestly it's hard to really say and speculate on how he will. Do but he's, young so he should bounce back pretty pretty. Well Grant arabus's, Error i'm, sorry, Sorry, Grant i'm going to completely screw up your last Name Erebus, Solbla. Dobbler, Dobbler, yeah, ANYWAY i fuck that. Up, OKAY i want your honest assessment Is runa coming back too? Early he has taken a whild card To hamburg Before Roland. Garris he said he wants to come back to be dominant and be able to play long. Matches i'm definitely not an, expert but at this his young, age wouldn't you want to be more. Cautious, YES i would probably want to be more, cautious but he is, young AND i will say that if he is physically you would never play a tennis tournament unless you were one hundred.
