You'll never go be bad. It's the Internet. You're busy. Let's do this from March fourth, twenty twenty four, for the next hour or so, let me help you sort through the world of gaming on Game Mess Mornings Live with me Jeff Grubb Today, don't forget to get those Mario Day presents for your loved ones before it's too late. But first, please join me and welcome you today's co host to Game Mess Mornings. It's Emma Fife. Everybody, Emma, how are you doing? Hello, I'm great. I'm debuting my new hair today. It's like a shade of blonde. Thank you so much. I suddenly got interested in my natural hair color, so we're experimenting and bringing it down to see if we can get it back to what it probably naturally is, which is maybe even a teeny bit darker than this. But this is pretty close and I'm a big fan. I'm loving seeing people in chat talking about they've played Final Fantasy seven Rebirth for twenty hours and are still in the grasslands. I salute you. I am with you. This is my life as well, and also apparently Roche's best boy now, so oh okay, with everybody else, wants the sequel to be about him. If there's a shifting tier list among faves in the community, is that what's happening. Yeah, there's a shifting tier list. It seems like everybody's team roche. Now. I still stand by Zach being best boy, but you know, and now and now spoilers, but we're allowed to talk about it because the game is out. At the beginning of the game, you immediately play a Zach and it's just like, yes, oh, stabbed right to the heart right off the bat. But yeah, that's that's that has nothing to do with how I'm doing. That's just me. It seems like it has a lot to do with how you're doing. Let's keep you guys, it really does. I've played so much Vital Fantasy seven Rebirth. I think I've played like one hundred hours now, So yeah, you beat it? Do you have you you've gone back? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, so I yeah, I finished the game, and then I was like, you know what, I'd have to load up the game again on the chapter select because I've got to stomp every fool in the land in Queen's Blood. So that's what I'm currently doing, all right, excellent and I got started. I got to Queen's Blood. That is a very good game. That Queen's Blood. They did a very good job at that. It's so fun. Yeah, it's like very quick to get the hang of it. And then you start seeing like okay, here's some clear strategies and you have options in however direction you want to take that strategy. It's it's very cool. Well, my current my current deck is so sick, like ugh, it's so good. Apparently they did actually test out a physical version of it, and I'm like, okay, they should just make right. Oh yeah, we need some stuff to put on the board. Yeah, I would like to have a ton if we can get that done, like if that exists and we can get it from Square by the time, say, like I don't know, Summer games. Wouldn't it be amazing if they were demoing that at Summer Games? Best like the real Queen Slide don't join it at our studio for when we do our Giant bomb at night. Yeah, that would be so sorry, okay, or cammed up for in between segments, yes, and to see who's playing and stuff. Yeah, I'm putting that out into the universe now. I'm manifesting that. Let's explain what we do here most weekdays, I, Jeff Grubb, will help piece your gaming life back together. That includes breaking news and maybe even some of our own original reporting. For all these topics, I'll get the input of a bona fide expert who will make me look smart. If you were watching live on twitch welcome, you can always listen to the show later on podcast feeds by searching for Game mess Warnings, or find the RSS on giant bomb dot com. You can also catch the show later with chapters and timestamps on YouTube. Hello YouTube. All right, we have a lot to get into, so let's start the Morning Mess with Piuro implies March tenth as in Mario Day, we'll see Nintendo share paper Mario and Luigi's Mansion two info. This is from my Nintendo News. Just a quick little tip here. Prominent leaker Porro or Payoro as hinting that we could get more information about the paper Mario the thousand Year Door remake and Luigi's manch too on March tenth or around March tenth, which which is Mario Day because mar one zero looks on zero. Yes, we haven't heard much about either title as of late, so March tenth would be an ideal time for Nintendo to vulge more. Nintendo has yet to ann's any plans for Mario Day this year. This is something that could happen, but Mari, like March tenth is a Sunday, So if they're gonna do it, I imagine they'll be like, well, you know, we're celebrating Mario Day this year this weekend, and they'll probably have some news on Thursday or Friday. Nintendo, you know, well, a company that loves celebrating Mario Day, company that typically doesn't do stuff on the weekend very often, especially something that feels like a little stunty like this, right, one hundred percent? Yeah, I mean I don't think that it would be as you say, on March tenth, just given the fact that it is Sunday, and and it is a weekend, like it's a weekend in Japan, and also and more likely, as you say, it would be in the week leading up to that, that there would be a Mario specific Nintendo direct. That all seems very very likely. It's just the actual timing of it that is up for debate. Yeah, it's the kind of thing where also like, hey, that they could drop this stuff in tiny little Twitter announcements that doesn't have to be some big production behind it, so that I suppose they could just drop a tweet on Mario Day. But also I think they want to like get a little bit of buzz going, so that would necessitate them, at least to a certain degree, just starting to talk about it this week. But hey, I'm I'm happy to get news about these games if we do. If we do get more information, like we get the release dates for Paper Mari and Luigi's Nanser two, I think that puts us back at a situation where we do have just about all the information about Nintendo's announced games. Besides obviously I guess Metroid Prime four tchnically getting announced seventy five goddamn years ago, but beyond that, like everything else that's been announced recently should then have a release date kind of like makes us wonder what's gonna happen next, She's what's gonna happen next? And yeah, a lot of reasons to suspect we should get some more news about Nintendo stuff here soon ish, Yes, And also, I mean, you think about the fact that Super Mario Brothers Wonder kind of came out of nowhere last year. It's like they announced it and then it was out a few months later. So I do wonder also if there's going to be some additional Mario adjacent title, like I don't know, like a Yoshi centric title like give us, Give us a Yoshi's Island for Switch or something. They're going to make it. They would make another good Yoshi's Island. I would be all for that. One of my favorite games, although none of the sequels have really done it for me. Yeah, I mean we know that, you know, based on a lot of reporting now that the Switch to likely March of next year at the earliest, probably does come out March and next so they can get it out in the current fiscal year one way or the other. But that's ways off. That opens up this massive gap for the holiday. And we just found out last week with the Pokemon Direct that there's not necessarily going to be a new Pokemon game released this holiday. Now, they could still announce something that's a possibility, that is something that is that while wasn't the Pokemon Direct. Maybe they do have a remake coming out this year. Probably not, but I'm not like completely writing that office possibility. But as it stands right now, no Pokemon for the holiday, So even the thing that was like the safe assumption not happening for switch. So it's like they probably will start dropping some other stuff here pretty soon, but not not anything too major, like you said, maybe some other smaller things they might have already had in the works and they might pull the trigger on it right. Yeah, definitely. And you know what, in two Pokemon's credit Let's Go ev and Pikachu, which were effectively red and blue, Red and Green remakes with a Pokemon Go aspect to them, were way better than they had any right to be. So even if Pokemon does re release something as like a sort of remake version of it, you know, they're still pretty fun. Yep. Yeah, for sure, and you know I would welcome something like that, that'd be cool. Yeah. I'm trying to think what they've done for Mario Day in the past. It's never been too huge, but I mean, at the very least, like you know, they do have two Mario games that are coming out. Yeah, it seems like they probably will mind us up with that. That makes some sense, and then maybe some discounts on games but they've been actually putting a lot of the big Mario games on sale pretty frequently frequently recently, so I guess that's not going to stop them from doing it again. Yeah, it seems they do sometimes have like Mario themed hardware. I suppose they could do that as well, right, Yeah. I mean the other thing that I'm sort of speculating here is obviously Mario has broken out of merely being in video games, so I wonder if we might get like a teaser for a second illumination Mario film. Certainly they're going to make one, then you might drop a date for that that does happen for me, Yeah, yeah, for a couple years ahead of time totally. Or also because I mean they announced the Mario movie during a Nintendo direct, which was insane, Like it was a film announced during a video game showcase, which was unheard of at the time. But I also think too maybe there's a because I feel like I've seen I don't know, i'd have to look up and see if they already have them in Japan or not, but I've seen like the prototype drawings of the power up bands for like Warrio and Waalawigi, like the villain ones. So I wonder if maybe there could be some sort of light theme park announcement. Yeah, that makes it. Yeah, you're right, like sprinkle in a bunch of different stuff, like a here's how the partnership with Illumination is expanding to like to evolve more stuff. Mario and hear some theme park news. Even if the theme park news, like even if they start talking a little bit more about the Donkey Kong stuff, that still would be under the umbrella of Mario in some ways, I think in Nintendo's opinions. So yeah, maybe you know, I'm not expecting the world, but it's cool that I think even though Mario Day on a Sunday, we should still expect something fun this week. Speaking of announcements this week, Ghost of Sushima's PC port could reportedly surface this weeks from Jordan Miller at VGC. A PC version of twenty twenties Ghost of Sushima could be announced next week, it's claimed according to Xbox Era era as Nick Baker. Hy Nick, who accurately predicted a majority of Sony's recent State of Play presentation, posted to Twitter claiming that news on the unannounced but widely expected port could arrive as soon as Tuesday March fifth, So tomorrow I'm hearing that we might get something about the Ghost of Sushima pcport pretty soon, maybe around the fifth, he posted to Twitter. Ghost of Sushimo was widely expected to arrive on PC at some point, following in the footsteps of the majority of Sony's current first party output from that era. Ghost of Sushimo was released in twenty twenty on PlayStation four and later received a director's cut for PlayStation five. Yeah, we all agree that this seems inevitable. And also we're getting to a point where it's like, I'm surprised this happened. Hasn't happened already for games from that era, it was about three years before they ended up on PC. Now. I think a big part of that is like, well, when you start up a Spider Man and you know that that is going to be very popular, like you could see what we're going to get that to PC, let's let's prioritize that. And Ghost of Sushermo I think surprised them how successful that was. That doesn't mean it was never going to happen if it wasn't successful, but it was very successful, and I think they were like, well, let's folks keep focusing on upgrading and for PlayStation five, and we have these other games that will prioritize, and we only have a limited number of teams that could port things to PC like Nick C's and things like that. Let's have them work on these other ones and they'll get the Ghost of Sushimo eventually. And now they're getting into Ghost of Sushima and it could come out, and it feels like it's going to come out, and then like next year after this, like twenty twenty five, Sony says they won't have any major franchise ips that are sequels to existing in France. It's like, well maybe after that, very quickly we get Ghost of Sushima two and excitement will be reignited because of this PC port. That makes a lot of sense, right, yeah, I mean timing wise, it's like you think about something like The Last of Us getting a PC port, and I feel like that that happened. Are not so long before the TV show? How you know, It's like they're they're very they're very smart about their timing on some of these titles. So yeah, I mean it does seem very likely that it would be PC port and then an announcement of Ghost to Shuma Part two. Yeah, I mean, it's it is interesting because obviously like that, Sony works that way a lot, where they have these titles that basically have these limited exclusivity deals and then they are open to bringing them back on PC. So they're actually getting more of a news life cycle out of those games because suddenly they're being available to other people. I mean, you know, the Final Fantasy series is a perfect example of this, where it's like they basically have a year of exclusivity on PlayStation and then they come to PC and this is well known. Yet no matter where there's any sort of advertising about these games, there's still always people being like, bring it to PC immediately. It's like, that's not it works save an exclusivity deal with Sony PlayStation trust me. So yeah, I mean again, like that, as you say, it's it's inevitable that this is going to get a PC port given the success of the game. It's a little surprising it hasn't already happened. But again, you were talking about an original ip, which is something that we don't necessarily see a whole lot of because companies aren't really willing to gamble on new stuff. And this is across the board. This isn't just in gaming, this is in TV. This is in movies as well. You know, the only place where you're really getting fresh IP is in like books basically. So look at something like Ghostushima, which was totally original and to have it be so successful is very encouraging. And bringing it to PC, you're just opening it up to an entire additional audience that will then be hype about it potentially getting a sequel. Yeah, and this is you know, Ghost of Sushimo. We talk about the synergies with like a sequel. You talked about the synergies with like a Last of Us and it's the TV show Ghost Sushi made last I heard that movie was happening like they I think that like they had a director and I thought it actually started filming. Uh, maybe maybe that's not the case, but hey, there could be news with that like relatively soon as well. And totally you know, Sony Pitchers wants to have that that that you know, one hand, you know, clapping the other. However they're saying goes, but like like we want to like make one thing to prop up another, and so having the game ready to go on PC. Uh So, like you said, get it back in the news. Maybe that gets a little bit more attention to the movie, and then the movie brings people back into buying these games. And now the game is available where you just about anyone can get it, whether it's PlayStation or PC. At that point, it's and we've seen over and over again now successful movies, it's especially successful shows get people excited to go play games. That happened with The Witcher, it did happen with the Last of Us, and they're like, well, now we are set up and ready to capitalize on that because it's on PC. Yep, maybe at the very least, at the very least, I'm excited to like really dive into this. I played a little bit of Ghostsushima when it launched, I think at the time, I think Mike did the review when I was working at games Feet, so I was like, I'll let him handle that. I'll handle something else. But I enjoy what I played here. It seems like a better Assassin's Creed in some ways, and like kind of what you expected some others and a lot of people really loved it. It is like extraordinarily popular in Japan. It like really took off there to the point where you have I think people were like, oh, thank you with these Western devs for making something that really respects this culture inst and likes like, okay, well, hearing that stuff gets me more excited to play it. And now it's got like major updates that they've done where they added cooperative multiplayer things like that, Like, yeah, there's a bunch of reasons to go back to this game, and now I'm going to use this as an excuse to do exactly that. I'm excited about it. Yeah, and I mean it. It has its roots completely in Japanese cinema and you know, like the films of Ocuratoryama and things our that's the creator of Dragon Ball Sally. Yeah, curse, it's Monday, everybody listen. Respect to paramas Onto. But uh but anyway, Yeah, it's like it is a lot of basis in like Krosawa's films, and and so it makes sense that that is something that would be very easy to adapt for the screen as well, and then also just kind of like brings that world to a different audience who might get curiosity about the games. They might not actually play them, but hey, you know you're getting you're getting eyes on the IP yep, uh real quick, a little hot off the presses. Xbox Partner Preview is going to happen on March sixth. This is a looks like this. It's going to stream to YouTube and Twitch at ten A and Pacific time one pm Eastern. Uh. It'll have it's going to have a thirty minute run time, and they're promising to feature titles like The First Berserker causon Tales of the Canzera Zal, which is that game looks very good, Khnitsugami, Half of the Goddess, which is that Capcom game that looked really good. Yes, that looked sick. So we'll get more information on Path of the Goddess, which is coming to like Game Past Day one. That's I always point. I think that's a pretty big deal, a new Capcom IP debuting coming to game Pass. I think it's like Microsoft making a really good play with Capcom. There and other great titles coming to Xbox Windows or Game Pass. So that'll happen this week. At the very least, Path of the Goddess is exciting to me. Any like third party games that you want to see show up at this. Oh man, you know, I love everything that Xbox has been doing with Atlas, with the Persona and shooting my tense titles. I mean, obviously that that seems unlikely given the fact that like Persona three reload just came out, but you know and stuff like you know, Persona four already got the Golden treatment. It's not quite as like upscaled as Persona three is, because that's like fully looks like Persona five. But yeah, I mean that's I think that. Yeah, Xbox has been smart about their partnerships because you know, they're they're casting a wide net in terms of who they're going to appeal to. And again it's like, I'm with you that like Path of the Goddess looked super sick, so I'm stoked to see more about that. Yeah, people are like saying and like Silk Song that actually actually could show up here, because last time we saw it was at an Xbox event. It could show up here. I think maybe, especially if it's coming out like relatively soon. If that game's still not coming out to like the second half of this year, they probably just wait for a bigger showcase and going there because if that game has earned its like, you know, space in a bigger showcase. So if they want to, that could be in Microsoft's Juna E three equivalent at that point. Sure, all right, Uh, this next story is going to be a jumping off point. Speedy SD Express cards have gone nowhere for years, but Samsung, Samsung could change that. This is from Andrew Cunningham at Ours Technica. Basically, this story is just saying that, hey, this new format, the new standard for SD cards, SD Express, hasn't caught on. Instead, people continue to use the old format that gets about eight has a read speed about eighty to ninety megab bytes per second. There are faster standards that professionals use for like recording four K footage at sixty frames per second that's about two two hundred and fifty megabytes per second, but that shows up almost nowhere in most consumer electronics. This was meant to do that, and it has a read speed of eight hundred megabytes per second. That is exciting because there is a device that does have some connections to Samsung called the Nintendo switch to that would greatly benefit from this being a thing. Now we don't know any like, There's plenty to talk about with the switch to im improved visuals, all these things that we're hoping for a bunch of Nvidia technologies that could push resolutions and frame rates. We don't know where that stuff settled. We definitely don't know about like what SD card slot is going to be on this thing. It seems like a possibility though, that that Nintendo could be looking at something along these lines, because they are when they showed off reportedly, when they showed off the Switch to developers, I believe at games Com something along those lines. They were showing Breath of the Wild running on the switch to and there was no load screens. That was one of the big highlights of the demo that they were showing. In order to get that off of expanded media, they are going to need something faster than eighty to ninety megabytes of REED speed on the device, and there are options developers of them. One is you get the cartridge or you download the game and you have to install it to an internal hard drive or SSD, which maybe does have faster speeds. They could have an SSD built into this thing with five hundred gigabytes of storage and that would solve it. But if they aren't going to have massive internal storage, they're going to have to get people away to expand it. This seems like a good solution. I might just be this might be like hopeful thinking them up, but I don't know, it seems like it could work to me. At the very least. They're gonna have to come up with something, right, because games are getting bigger's getting bigger. Yeah, go ahead. We've already seen that games that are on the Switch and that are on other systems, namely Mortal Kombat one. You know, it looks like a totally different game on the Switch simply because of the limitations of the switch is hardware and how fast it can read. This is very exciting to me as somebody who films a lot off. Right, Yes, if this becomes the standard and I can just walk across the street to Staples and get a super SD that reads up to eight hundred megamus per second, like I'm in because we're I mean, that's always the thing is like transferring footage is so much of the gig when you're filming stuff, and like this would change the game in terms of just like this would put it in enough switch two's that the economy of scale would kick in and we could be expecting to see like this being available in more places. Yes, exactly, exactly. Yeah, if this becomes like the mass market thing, then like, uh, like the relief I feel just thinking about it, the hours spent transferring footages to hard drives, because it's like, we already have the SSDs, which read a lot faster than your sort of standard hard drive, but then if you're also copying off of an SD card that reads that fast, like it's just going to make everybody's lives so much easier. Yeah, And it's the kind of thing where SATA SSD drives are a little bit slower than eight hundred megabytes per second. So it's like you could have one of the Zoo SD express things be the main storage I like a Raspberry Pie or a really tiny computing device. Yeah, and it would like, yeah, it's not going to be in vm E SSD speeds, but it's going to be way faster than you need for just about anything. And so it's like, now we have cheap small Windows drives on these SD cards, so we could pop into stuff and it's like that would be a huge leap or you know, or Linux or whatever. If you're on a Raspberry Pie. That would be excellent for a whole number of reasons, and then it would start here. It's like you need a big company to adopt it to kickstart, and like Apple's not like putting SD card slots on their devices. That's something that like would have helped, but they're not going to be doing that, and most phone manufacturers have gotten dropped to SD card slots and micro SD card slots. So it's like, well, a switch to is like one possible device that actually could change this. So yeah, I'm with you, Like there's a number of work like scenarios that I would really want one of these things. And it does start for me with hey, hey my game's run fast on a switch to because of this thing. Yeah I'm happy, But then I want to be able to go buy one of these things and put it in any number of devices, including like future commuting devices. So yeah, fantastic. Absolutely. Uh A final thing before the break eas Star Wars Strategy game is still in development following RESPAWND cancelations. This is from Jordan Midler at VGC. The Star Wars Strategy Game, currently in development at Bitreactor, will continue despite recent layoffs at publisher EA. That's according to a post from the developer on Twitter following news that Respawn's first person shooter was canceled this week, It wrote, the studio wrote, last week was difficult for the edustry, and more so because of our strong relationships within the other teams at Respawn. But for those asking, we are still hard at work and our game was unaffected by last week's news. We still don't know a ton about this game, but it was one of several projects like announced as part of a batch of like Star Wars things happening at Respawn, including that Star Wars first person shooter was confirmed at the same time. So when that got canceled, people were wondering about this bit Reactor game. But at the time it seemed like no news was good news, and that seems to be the case. What this sounds like to me, Emma, is they already have a contract studio bit Reactor that they're working with here that probably has reduced costs for them. It's like they are only committed for what they've already committed to this company to make the game, and then respond is working with them on it. But it's like that those resources are probably minimal compared to starting up a whole new game where it's like, no, Respond is making an entire Star Wars first person shooter, yes, and it's still two three years away from coming out, so they're only going to have to scale up. It feels like, no, this is already part of the cost cutting measures, right, Yeah. I mean, as you say, it's like they've already basically contracted out to another developer to work on the strategy title and so that is that is a completely separate entity effectively than Respawn building a first person shooter from the ground up. So yeah, I mean at this point, it feels like that game is definitely, you know, still going to go forward because, as you say, EA has actually contracted out to somebody else, not to Respond specifically, So that's like, yeah, it's happened. We don't know anything about it. It's a ways out, but it's happening. It does like I do wonder what's going to happen with Respawn. They you know, Apex Legends is in a certain like like kind of end of life, a very long end of life scenario, but they're not like looking to reinvest in the Apex Legends in a major way. They're not like gonna turn it off tomorrow, It's going to take years, but they are like we have I think I think they believe at EA that they've seen the peak of Apex Legends, and and that they don't believe that they can change the fortunes of that. I who knows games continue to grow over time, but Apex Legends didn't burn pretty brightly out of the gate. So maybe they are looking at numbers and seeing things different than what I can imagine. It's like, oh, I look at what is that game that there's a lot of like free to play games that like, oh, every time they put out new content, it's like, we have more players than we've ever had before. And I'm like, well, Apex Ledgends, you probably could do that. Maybe not, I don't know, but everyone's looking okay, So Respawn in EA are now saying, or we say, EA saying, hey, we want to get away from licensing IP that that's expensive, and that gets everyone thinking what about Yes, it absolutely absolutely is. So it's like, well, you do own titan Fall? What about Titan Fall three? And now there's been a lot of conversation this past weekend. Once again about it. There's always conversation about titan Fall three. Whenever I do look into it, it's like they're not making titan Fall three. They just straight up aren't they are. They do have another team that has been like kicking around a like skunk Works project that is that was in like very early. There's like different phases of prototyping. There's a very early, very small team prototyping phase, and now there's they're they're going to go to a wider like this is a real project now, but still in the prototyping phase. And that that has happened with that game. And that's from the director of the original titan Fall. This game I as it stands today, as far as I understand, is it is a titan Fall game. It's again the titan Fall universe. But everyone I talk to you keep saying, well, it's not. But it's don't get in your mind that it's titan Fall three. Like a game with a online multiplayer in a single player campaign. I'm like, well, wait, what then, how is it? Like? What is this game? I don't still don't know, but it feels like, man, if you are trying to go all in on your own IP just expand that into being titan Fall three. Figure out a way to make that happen, and then I'm reminded that, hey, they were working on titan Fall three essentially with Titanfall Legends, which was going to be a part of Apex Legends, and they pulled the rug out from underneath that. So it's like it it seems very unlikely that they would change their strategy and go back and actually end up making titan Fall three. But I don't know, Emma. I just love titan Fall two so much and Titanfall one. I hope that they can change it here. But like, if they're not going to make license games or make fewer license games, and they're not going to make titan Fall three, I mean, what are they going to do? Well? Yeah, Emma, what do they do? I don't know. I don't know well because, as I mean, I brought it up before that people aren't taking chances on new IP. But you look at something like Ghostsushima, which did extremely well, which was a new IP. Now granted it was very smart about the way that it did a new IP because it was living in something that already existed, you know, the sort of you know, the Japanese cinema. So I wonder then if it's like, Okay, well we're not going to do a titan Fall three and we don't want to license Star Wars, do they do they go full Zack Snyder on this with his Netflix series that is clearly Star Wars. You know, yeah, well, I mean I would I pondered that, like, hey, you have that Star Wars first person shooter that is supposed to be like you play as a Mandalorian at least for part of it, and he's gonna have a jet pack and they're going to like do cool wall maneuversis like Wall running all these things. Take that and turn it into a titan Fall game or titan Fall three or just something. And it's like, well, no, no, that that while that team has not been laid off, they are getting. The likely scenario for them is they're getting put in on to other teams at EA, not just at Respawn. And it's because there was a budget to make that game. And it's like they're not just canceling that game, they are taking away the budget that went along with making that game, and they're not replacing it elsewhere in Respawn. It's like, no, we are spending less money on Respawn now going forward, so it's like the money to make a game like that is just not there, so they have to reallocate those resources those people. And I mean, I just I get bummed out because it's like I feel like, if respond has not earned their autonomy within EA, who has And it's you know, they've been the breadwinner for this company now for the last five years, and this is the reward they get where it's like, hey, the thing that you were making And again I'll say it, I know it breaks everyone's heart. Titan Faule Legends. Everyone who played that thought it was really cool. Everyone who played the Star Wars first person shooter said it was something amazing. Now. It wasn't like some imagine everything that was going to be amazing one day. It was awesome now. And it's like, man, if they have something awesome and they can't see it through, I don't know. I don't know what to say about a company like yeah, yeah, I mean they couldn't figure out enough micro transactions to make the game sustainable. Yep. Really if it feels I mean, and Apex legends on it's like, you know, it had its bumps in the road with that stuff. They figured that out. You almost never hear anyone complain about that now for the last year, so I'm sure in the community they probably are complaining a lot, But like that wider news of like, hey, the monetization in this game is completely busted. No one really talks that way about the Apex legends these days. No, all right, we're gonna take a quick break. When we get back. A lot more headlines, including a seven hundred dollars Xbox. We'll get into all that right after this. All right, we are back, and yeah, seven hundred dollars Xbox. Xbox is launching a seven hundred, seven hundred dollars SpongeBob Special Edition Series X Console. This is from Tom Ivan at VGC. Microsoft is launching the Special Edition SpongeBob SquarePants Xbox Series X Console Bundle, priced at six hundred and ninety nine dollars. The Xbox Series X Nickelodeon All Star Brawl To Special Edition Bundle includes a custom design console and wireless controller, plus a digital download of Nickelodeon All Stars Brawl Too. A limited supply will be available to purchase at eight am Pacific time on March seventh, Microsoft said it looks like SpongeBob. Like that is that's the thing here. It is painted to look like SpongeBob. It's pretty neat. I mostly bring this up, though, Emma, because I wonder if we will start seeing more of this leading up to whatever happens next with these consoles where they do special editions, they do variations that cost more and more to begin setting up the price for what the next generation is going to be. Where it's like, well we got a handful of Xbox Series X is that we're set one hundred dollars, So when the next gen launch is at seven hundred or eight hundred, if Xbox goes that route of trying to be like super powerful, it looks a little bit less strength. They're slowly stepping us up the ladder, and you know, I might be seeing patterns where none exist them up. What do you think? No, I think that that's very reasonable because and the way that they're going about it is they're targeting very specific fandoms. I mean, Nintendo does this already. They have their their various themed switches. You know, there's like an animal crossing switch, there's a Mario O lead there's a breath of the wire or a cheers of the kingdom O lead, So you know this is this is not a new practice. And as you say, that does set expectations of well, there's already people that spend seven hundred dollars on a SpongeBob xbox, so you know you're getting something even better than those people got for the same price point. Yes, I think it's you know, we definitely see these companies thinking this way before. I think the O lead from Nintendo being three instead of three hundred and moving everything else down. They're like, no, let's step everybody up. First of all, we can get away with it because people aren't going to pay this price for because of inflation, any number of things, whatever it was, we can get away with it. That's the number one factor. And then the other factory I think is like, hey, as we step these people up, they will become more accustomed to prices moving in that direction. And I mean I think, you know, having a pro come out from PlayStation five, I think that's probably also going to cost more, which you know, they haven't lowered the price of the PS five, they have had a lot of sales on it, but I mean, I think they probably won't permanently lower the price of that. I think they'll step up the price, and that will be part of setting up the next generation as well. Know my Microsoft even has like a revised Xbox Series X reportedly coming out soonish this year. Next year, we'll see. They said they're going to have a hardware announced this around this holiday. Whether it's for this holiday or beyond, they'll have something to announce this holiday that very well could just be an Xbox Series X with a ton more store ridge that is also fifty dollars more expensive. I think that this slow sort of manipulation of perception of value is something that these companies think about a lot. Now. I do look at the SpongeBob Xbox and I'm like, it's probably just because maybe I am being a bit too a tinfoil hat there. It's probably just because there's very few of them and it looks like SpongeBob and I would pay seven hundred dollars for that. It's very cute, I mean. And that's the thing is, like SpongeBob is such a great fan base to target for this because they are dedicated and you know you're gonna have people as well, that there's the collector aspect of it who maybe like didn't get an Xbox up to this point, and they're like, well, now I gotta, now, I gotta. I'm glad I waited because I got to get this SpongeBob. So I'm I'm I might just watch the drop on this just to see how fast they go because I'm really curious. Yeah, and it's like, you know, they haven't done on of these custom exposes this generation, and you gotta start thinking, like, coming out of the pandemic, probably is it like a ton of excess manufacturing lines that you could just go and say, hey, we want to have a bespoke Xbox for the SpongeBob for the Nickelodeon All Stars Brawl to game. So it probably is significantly more expensive to make this Xbox than to make the standard Xbox. Where it's like, Okay, well we're going to add a whole new part of the assembly line here where we're going to add this skin or whatever. It's like, well, no, you you got to have to go actually find someone new to do that, and they are charging a premium because a lot of those places either closed down or don't have enough workers these days, So yeah, I imagine there's a lot of like logistical reasons why this is also more expensive to manufacture. I am curious though about like what differentiates this from getting like a skin for your Xbox, you know what I mean. Maybe it's just like the the official licensing of it all from a collector aspect, right, I mean, yeah, it's got like that's definitely part of it, right, because like there is the cannon, you know, game Boy Advances where it's like, oh, this one is from the Pokemon Store and it looks like Pikachu and it's like, you know, that one's worth way more than some custom one that someone made with with either stickers or even if they got a custom one where they sent it to an artist and had it done like that. You know. That's cool and I like that, But I think in terms of collectors collector's value and perceived value having it be official, I think you nailed it. I think that's a big part of it here. Yeah, uh all right. Blatro was removed from several several digital stores due to mistaken ratings change. This is from Jordan Midller at VGC. Shout out to Jordan. Popular Poker based roguelike Blantro has been removed from several digital storefronts in an apparent ratings mix up. The game, which has been frequently occupying Steam's top ten most popular game since it's released last month, was removed from several storefronts due to the game's ratings suddenly jumping from three plus to eighteen plus, which I think is the rating scheme in the UK. Exact statement to the publisher to publisher Playstecks at Twitter page reads, we are aware that Blatro has been temporarily removed from sale on a number of digital stores in some countries on console platforms, meaning that some new customers will be unable to buy it. It continues, This is not an issue with the stores themselves, however, a reaction to an overnight change to Blatro's age rating from three plus to eighteen plus by a ratings board without any advanced warning, due to a mistaken belief that the game contains prominent gambling imagery and material that instructs about gambling. Blatro does not allow or encourage gambling, and we fundamentally believe that the ratings decision is unfounded. Bilatro was developed by someone who is staunchly anti gambling and took pain sticking care or has taken painsticking care to ensure that the game does not feature gambling mechanics of any kind. Perhaps most notably, the publisher claims the concerns about the game being highly rated due to potential gambling imagery were raised with Rating Sports before the release, and then the Rating Sports assured them to the publisher that this would not be an issue, And so for it to be an issue, that's got to be especially frustrating. Now, am I played a lot of billatro and if there's one thing you can't do in the game, it is gamble. Yeah, there are chips, and there's chips, sounds, and there are things called antis and blinds, and those are it's that's gambling terminology, and that's that's as far as it goes. That's a s from post because antis and blinds don't work like antis and blinds in actual gambling. And then you can't risk, you can't even risk any of the virtual currency that you make. That's not how it works. It's just a measure of like the difficulty level, that's all it is. This is really unfortunate and it feels like the game's sort of viral popularity did not actually help it here where it's like suddenly people are like, what what is this? And to be fair, I was playing it. My wife looks over my shoulder, She's like, are you are you playing poker online? I'm like, no, here's this game. I think that the trouble here really just comes from the fact that it has those recognizable card faces that sort of identify it as being gambling, even if it isn't right gambling. Yep. I mean if it was Pokemon cards, we probably wouldn't be here. What was that? Yeah, yep, if it was Pokemon cards, we wouldn't be here. If they had done their own card faces, original, whatever, wouldn't be here. But yeah, as you say, it's like, unfortunately, it's just the design of the game that puts it in a place where you could look at it at a passing glance and go, is this gambling? But but as you say, there's actually no gambling mechanics whatsoever in the game. So it's unfortunate and it's unfair to the developers. Yeah, they just they just took some existing game mechanics that exist in card games in the real world, including ones that you know, you would typically gamble in. But all they're using is the gaming mechanics, not the gambling mechanics, right exactly. And it's you know, it clearly benefits from from its relationship to poke, which has obviously it's a gambling pastime, but it does so in a way that is very delineated from gambling itself in just about every way. And I clearly shouldn't be rated this way. This is a game that I would happily hand to young people and be like, no, this is this is not at any risk of harming you the way gambling could it is. It's, in fact, it's a fair way of understanding odds and how things work and how you can change odds with just a few card changes here and there. Yeah, one hundred percent. And I mean I think back to my own childhood and it's like I played blackjack when I was a kid. We just didn't gamble, right exactly. Yeah, right. And it's like, at the very least, like by definition, this is not gambling because because you're not putting money on it. But it's not even virtual gambling. It's not even like a social casino on Facebook or whatever. It's completely away from all of that, waiting to see if there's some update here. You know, this is going to affect their ability to sell things. Yea, and eighteen plus rating is the kind of thing I think in a lot of countries they just don't allow those on some stores without exception, or if you do get an exception, it requires a lot of effort. And so yeah, this is going to cut into their sales. To be like, as it stands now, I think it's still available on Steam everywhere. Steam like obviously lets people buy eighteen plus games. There's games butts all over the place on Steam, So yeah, I think they'll they'll be fine there, but this has got to be very frustrating for them, especially after doing all that work working with regulators and rating sports beforehand. To say this is what the game is. Are we sure this is not a problem, and to get the no, this isn't a problem, and to have that change after the game is released, that is especially annoying, I would believe. Yep, all right, Ransomware Groups Group admits it's Epic games Hacks was a hoax. Excuse me, a hoax. This is from Chris Sculling at VGC. The so called ransomware group that recently claimed to have hack Epic Games has omitted it was a hoax. Last week, the group, which goes by the name mcgolovich, posted a message on its darknet leak site giving information on its claimed data breach of the Fortnite and Epic Game store company. The group claimed to have compromised email, passwords, full name, payment information, source code, and many other pieces of data amounted to a total size of one and eighty nine gigabytes. However, unlike when Insomniac Games was hacked by Recita Group in late twenty twenty three, mcgolovich failed to produce any actual proof that it had successfully hacked Epic Games. Epic then sent VGC a statement saying that it was investigating but had zero evidence that these claims are legitimate. We talked about this last week read Epic Games. The statement said, Yeah, there's definitely a chance that this is just a hoax, And here we are. I guess they're probably trying emma to get people to like pay up before people realize what's going on here. And these leaks and these hacks are so frequent at this point that maybe some of those will fall through the crack and you'll get away with it. They just didn't get away with it in this case, right, Yeah, absolutely, yeah, because I was I was thinking about why, and it truly is just the hoping that they will bet on the side of safety and you know, pay up whatever their demands are, et cetera, before they realize, oh, actually they didn't breach any data whatsoever. So man, people are bad. Yeah, it's like something you already had to be pretty vigilant about, and yeah, it's just gonna be even worse. It's just the Internet just exists now to fool you at every turn, whether it's with you know, the fake stories and bots conversing with one another to make you think like someone's having a real conversation, to artificially boost like the rating on various stores. All this stuff. It's all just fake and and everyone's like trying to make a quick buck because because everything else is broken when it comes to the economy, and the people feel like, you know, I'm being taken advantage of by any company I go to work for. Why shouldn't I get in on some of that action and take advantage of people. It's just nihilism all the way. Down. It's broken. It's very discouraging sometimes yeah, yeah, I can't remember any more passwords like we gotta stop, we gotta stop, yeah, we got we got to figure something out here. People, it's getting out of hand. Uh, let's see a final store here in Nintendo E Shop to delisting of Octopath Traveler is only temporary. This is from Sophie McAvoy at Games Industry dop is. Nintendo Is confirmed that Octopath Travelers delisting on the E Shop is temporary. On its customer support page, the publisher noted that as of March first, the game will be temporarily unavailable on the E Shop and My Nintendo Store, but will be available to purchase again soon. It clarifies that users who have previously purchased a game could still redownload it from the E Shop, as reported by VG twenty four to seven, There was no announcement when the twenty eighteen Square Enix title was delisted by Nintendo, and it's still available to purchase on other digital storefronts such a Steam. Goodmatsu noted on social media that the de listing may be due to the game's publisher being changed from Nintendo to Square Enix. On the e Shop in recent that makes gold makes some sense where it's like, oh, you know, Nintendo system could be back so backward. That's like, actually they're like change whose bank accounts associated with this or something? We actually have to take it down, right, you know what. I'm fully guessing that that's one hundred percent what it is, because I mean, the thing about Nintendo is that like their online support is it exists, but it's not the greatest uh integration, shall we say? So, I think that it is very likely that that is the case. Is that, like the source code itself is just so backwards that they have to completely delist the game, go in, change a bunch of stuff on the back end before they can relist it as being published by Square Enix as opposed to being published by Nintendo. Since Octoba now lives on a bunch of different platforms and is not a Nintendo exclusive, So yeah, that seems extremely likely. Yeah, how do you feel about the state of non Final Fantasy RPGs like Octopath Traveler? Yeah, I mean, look, I have not played Persona three reload yet because I got it basically it came out and I got the code for Final Fantasy seven Rebirth, so I was playing that, but I'm very excited to go back and play Persona three reload because I've really enjoyed all of the sort of revamps of Persona titles that have been happening, and even you know, I mean, I fully was like with Persona five, I was like, do I really need to play Persona five Royal? I played Persona five and everybody was like, yeah, you really do, and people were right. It was freaking awesome. So yeah, I mean, there's lots of other really good, you know, JRPG's out there, and the Octopath series. I got tired of the first Octopath Traveler, but everybody has told me that I need to go back and play about Traveler too. Yeah, I've heard that two is a big improvement. I also love. I also really enjoyed Triangle Strategy, which is some of the Octopath Traveler team that was a term ased Strategy RPG, which is more sort of in your Fire Emblem Realm, which I also really enjoy Fire Emblem games, not all of not necessarily all of them. You know, they're they're a mixed bag in terms of how good they are. You know, Three Houses and Awakening being the peak for me. But but yeah, I mean again, but then also like you look at stuff that isn't actually JRPGs but is JRPG inspired, Like see If Stars was awesome. It was very you know, crono trigger, which I really enjoyed. And so I think that you know, there are where the other JRPGs are really thriving, are not necessarily in those big like Triple A fancy graphic titles. They're the ones that are very much an homage to the more classic style of JRPG and I think that, you know, there's a lot out there to enjoy, and that particular style works so well on a handheld console, so they're like a perfect perfect fit for the switch. So yeah, I mean, you know, I think that Final Fantasy still definitely is showing up as being the big giant when it comes to your big state of the art graphics, Triple A kind of stuff, But there's a lot of really great stuff out there, and I think that you know, making but again, we're talking about the first Octopath Traveler here, not Octapath Traveler too, which was immediately published as being published by Square Enix, so that's still available, and by and large, I hear is the superior Octopath, Yes, and is much of it is like improved, and people assessed it as being so. It also felt like it kind of came and went, which while I'm like a little bit like concerned, I'm not concerned. I think square Enix is right to focus in on and its biggest franchises. That is what's worked for Capcom, and every publisher, especially the ones in Japan, should be like looking to mimic what Capcom is doing. I think that said, I think Squaringix did a lot in the last several years of like putting out a bunch of different games from all into like new new ips, deal Field Chronicles and all these different things, and some of them had like a lot of interesting gameplay quirks, and some of our like great revitalizations of old franchises. I do wonder if that stuff will begin, you know, it becomes less frequent from Squaring in X, which I guess I wouldn't be too surprised by because a lot of it did also come and go, even more so maybe than Acopath Traveler too. Well. Yeah, but it's interesting though, because you then, but they are also in an interesting position of Atlas and their partnership with the Xbox and particularly game Pass and putting out all of the Persona titles. So it feels like they're in a position wherein it would be beneficial for them to keep putting out, you know, those remasters of these other games, and they're sort of not top tier final Fantasy games. I mean, there's another uh mana game coming out soon as well, like yeah, Dragon Quest three hds coming out, Yeah, yeah, exactly. So yeah, it's but but they have the disadvantage of it not being a game pass you pay for a subscription kind of things, so it's a it's yeah, it feels like the RPG audience is growing constantly and growing fast, but it also feels like Squarens doesn't always know how to take advantage of that. So and you know, and very the very least, Atlas seems like they have a better grab grasp on that surprising rising because for a while there they were like, we're just gonna put it on a PlayStation. That's cool, right, and everyone's yeah, switch, what is wrong with you? Yeah, you finally are getting the hang of that. So yeah, last little tidbit here before we get to the polls. Matt Cautelo points out that hell divers to US sales. We talked about you, it's UK sales going up week after week. It's US sales went up yet again during its third week in the market, and honest to goodness, in verse decay curve so far. He says, it's like Steve Irwin citing a rare bird or something rare and amazing. He says he wants to do it in Australian accent. That is, it's cool news that a game like that could come out and catch on in such a way that it's like more people are buying it every week. Feels like it does feel extremely rare these days, and the game has clearly clearly earned it. Yeah, I want to get back to it and play a lot more of it. Really enjoy that game. All right, all questions we got from last week, we're gonna do two because we didn't get the one up from Thursday up for Friday, So we'll do both of those right now. Starting with are you losing interest in buying video games? This was in a reaction to a lot of people claiming that there's a market crash and that and that's what's leading to people or if these companies having to lay things off and thirty five percent of people say yes, they are losing some interest in buying video games, sixty five percent say no, And that's four point five thousand votes. That's a bigger number than I was expecting him. Do you think, like the bad news the trend of there being fewer big games to vibe because they're taking so long to make and getting news from like Sony that it's going to take all of twenty twenty fiscal twenty twenty five, so through March twenty twenty five before they have another one of their big franchise IP sequels come out. Like the people, a lot of people show up to games for those kinds of things, and if they're less frequent frequent, why wouldn't they be less interested. Yeah, it's interesting because I think that games for me, especially because so many of these games are so gigantic, that it puts me in a place where I feel like I have a lot of backlog games that I want to play. And also, you know, there's the game pass of it all as well of there's you know, lots of eight other titles to explore in there, and games are expensive, so yeah, I mean, I I I actually fully get why people are saying that they're losing interest in buying video games. It doesn't mean that they're losing interest in games. That's a good point. And then but that would still at the end of the day manifest in the same way for these companies, where it's like, if people feel like they have a glood of good games, maybe they do buy fewer games and that's bad for us. So yep, interesting, all right, other poll question, have you ever bought something from dk oldies? Three percent said yes, ninety seven percent said no. Do you know what dk oldies is? What it is? It is the CarMax of retro games. It is Walmart. It is like this big store that will have everything. It's always marked up significantly, and they got kind of a weird reputation. But only three percent of people have ever bought anything from there. And so all those YouTube videos I see about how dk oldies is scamming all of gaming, I think might be blown a little bit out of proportion. So yeah, I mean, if ninety seven percent of chat has not purchased anything from them, I think people are smarter than decay. People are pretty savvy to it yeah, that said. I bought Superman for in sixty four for Dan from there, and that's why I was talking about him. That worked just fine. Whatever that was. That was doctor Fandom's money, So fair enough, doctor Fandom, the heir to the Fandom family fortune. All right, amending doctor Fandom's money. Yeah, I mean, listen, it's part of the job. Why didn't I just use eBay because I didn't want to do a listing and I didn't want to buy Now I'm kind of sick of eBay. Sean's not my money. All right. That does it for the poll questions. I have a new poole question. We'll get to here in a second. Before I do that. And while we get that set up, am I Why don't you tell people where they could find you on the internet what you have going on? All that good stuff. Yeah, you can find me on the internet. I exist there, I'm at m Fife everywhere. I really only used by instag anymore because I'm just overwhelmed by how many social media platforms there are, and my life is so much better without Twitter slash x constantly being in it. I took that off my phone a long time ago, and it has truly significantly improved the quality of my life. I've got final fantasies having rebirth videos come into game Spot throughout the week, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled and those will be there. They'll be fun and possibly a little crazy. Yeah, and that's me. I'm you know, I'm out here working. Hell yeah, I spent too much. Well the weekends. I like because I will. It's easy to get off Twitter on the weekends because when I tweet so much, it's because I'm sitting here at this computer and I'm just my brain's firing off exhaust that I can't control, and that all just goes on to Twitter and that I'll get to the weekend and I'm like, man, that was nice. I went all Saturday most of Sunday without checking it, and then by Sunday night, I'm like, well, I got to start getting back on see what's happening. And then suddenly I'm back and I'm like, oh, can't control myself. I will say that that is the downfall, is that I never know what's happening anymore. Well, you should be happy not to know what's happening. Boy, it is. It's monetized faux outrage kind of constantly now on Twitter, and there's a fucking stupid one happening right now that's reminding me of fucking game or Gate, and I'm like, oh, try to give it no as little oxygen as possible other than say, these are fucking idiots and they should feel bad about themselves Jesus. Yeah, maybe I'll start using TikTok or something. Also, I just want to give one short shout out here, which is that my fiance spent his entire week last week and into the weekend making a whole series of tiktoks about uh a genre of game called the funny little guy game, and it's doing very well. And yeah, so it's just Gabe Durham on TikTok and they're very fun videos if you want to check them out. Yeah, let's check that out of everybody, that's fantastic. I love funny little guy guy. Know what's an example of a funny little guy? We have a like a little sneak peak. Yeah, Kirby is a funny little guy. Okay, the funniest little guy. Yeah. Mario is a funny little guy who exclusively surrounds himself with other funny little guys, Pickman, Funny Little Guys. Yeah, that might be my genre. Funny Little Guys might be my primary video game genre, and I'm happy to hear it all. I'm gonna check out this TikTok immediately. All right, new poll question. Have you ever played Ghost of Sushimo? Yes or no? I'm curious. We'll talk about it on Game This Mornings on Wednesday here on Giant Bomb. Speaking to Giant Bomb On Tuesday Tomorrow, the BombCast is back. Look forward to that. It'll be a bunch of great discussions about games and the news of the last week. We will have plenty of other fun stuff happening this week. Wednesday, new season of Blake Club starts with Dan Reiker playing Super Super Dan sixty four The Dan of Steel. Oh, look cord to that. That does mean that Mike Mitchkoo beat Mortal Kombat Mythology sub Zero. I can't recommend enough going and watching that. I had some friends mentioned that they were watching it and really enjoying it. They I saw Ambron Kahn saying he was watching Mike play it and like the game is a crime. It is you have to see it for yourself. I was Rena book right now, Emma, about Apollo eight called a Rocketman. It's actually a book that Mike recommended to me, and it's like they always talk about how they're going out and exploring things and finding things out for all human race. And that's what it feels like Blake Club is we are going in and we are seeing what these games are for everybody, so no one else has to We will go to the edge so you could save yourselves. And we're gonna do it again with Superman. Looking forward to it all right, plenty more. We'll have probably a tweet later day talking about what's happened this week. I'm gonna go to a meeting and find out right now. In the meantime, Emma, thank you so much for spinning today talking with me about video games. I really appreciate it. Oh, thank you so much for having me always a delight. Thank you everybody for watching. You're the best audience of gaming. And until next time, have a good one, take care of yourself and goodbye. Fade the Black. Oh yeah,
