<v Speaker 1>the episode. Okay, before we get going, I have to
<v Speaker 1>celebrate the fact that we have an anniversary. It was
<v Speaker 1>three years ago that we first sat down on your
<v Speaker 1>porch and said, what are we going to do for
<v Speaker 1>this podcast?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, that's right.
<v Speaker 1>It was an amazing moment. We sat down, we explored movies,
<v Speaker 1>we explored comparisons. We came up with our first season
<v Speaker 1>and about a million ideas for the seasons to come.
<v Speaker 1>And I want to give some credit to some guys
<v Speaker 1>who are inspirational thirty something Movie Podcast. We had been
<v Speaker 1>listening to them. We had taken some cues from stuff
<v Speaker 1>that they were doing, and so I gotta say, guys,
<v Speaker 1>if you are not listening to the thirty something Movie Podcast,
<v Speaker 1>you need to be Shirley fans go look up the
<v Speaker 1>thirty something movie podcast. What they do is they go
<v Speaker 1>and they look at movies that are thirty years old
<v Speaker 1>this year. So right now they're covering nineteen ninety two movies.
<v Speaker 1>They've been doing it for like six years now. I
<v Speaker 1>think they started in eighty five, seven years now. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>but I mean, gosh, they just covered Patriot Games, they
<v Speaker 1>covered The Bodyguard, they covered the Last the Mohicans, they
<v Speaker 1>covered Scent of a Woman.
<v Speaker 3>Who Who.
<v Speaker 1>Man, these guys are awesome. It's John and Pat and
<v Speaker 1>Jeff and Dennis and Bo and it's like hanging out
<v Speaker 1>with your best friends for an hour and a half.
<v Speaker 1>It's fantastic.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, we love these guys. These guys have actually become
<v Speaker 3>our friends. It's really cool, it really is. You know,
<v Speaker 3>we really need to go up to Chicago and see
<v Speaker 3>these guys. But they're great guys. Their podcasts are fun
<v Speaker 3>and entertaining and definitely recommend them.
<v Speaker 1>You guys need to go subscribe right now. Okay, so

<v Speaker 1>good man? Yeah, I did. Pat's not a fan of

<v Speaker 3>Tom Cruise character was not stepping in line with the
<v Speaker 3>chain of command, and that, you know, he has had
<v Speaker 3>that little Maverick arrogance there. But it's very interesting stuff.
<v Speaker 3>Those guys aren't great friends of ours. Go check them,
<v Speaker 3>especially Jeff. Jeff is the best one. He's the greatest
<v Speaker 3>guy of them all. We are just ripping Jeff a
<v Speaker 3>little bit. We love you Man, we love you guys.
<v Speaker 1>We love Jeff, we love Pat, we love Bo, we
<v Speaker 1>love Dennis, and we love our good friends John Reid, who.

<v Speaker 3>Whitney Houston's The Bodyguard soundtrack. Wow. Yeah, that's forty million copies.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, Titanic didn't beat this one. No, man, no,
<v Speaker 1>that's incredible.
<v Speaker 3>It was the largest selling album of all time until
<v Speaker 3>Thriller came around. Oh my gosh, this is the thriller
<v Speaker 3>of the seventies. Oh my word, that's crazy. Seventeen tracks
<v Speaker 3>on this one, seventy tracts. We're gonna have to move fast.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, ready to jump into the history.
<v Speaker 3>Now, let's go.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, I thought we weren't doing the false stuf. Yeah, okay,
<v Speaker 1>I'm going to start in the Isle of Man in
<v Speaker 1>nineteen forty six, where a young English boy named Barry
<v Speaker 1>Gibb is born. Okay, three years later he has little
<v Speaker 1>fraternal twin brothers named Robin and Maurice, and then they
<v Speaker 1>move to Australia. Now interesting, let's do another shrimp on
<v Speaker 1>the Bobby. Oh, thank you so much for doing that.
<v Speaker 1>Oh my gosh. So interestingly, at the same time that
<v Speaker 1>they're moving to Australia, there's a guy who grew up
<v Speaker 1>in Australia, born in nineteen thirty four. In nineteen fifty five,
<v Speaker 1>he moves from Australia to the United Kingdom. So they
<v Speaker 1>basically kind of switch sides of the ocean if you will. Okay, Now,
<v Speaker 1>what's really interesting is that in the articles that I read,
<v Speaker 1>it says that this guy, Robert Stigwood, after he was
<v Speaker 1>down with college nineteen fifty five, he hitchhiked to England.
<v Speaker 1>I don't know how you do that, Like, I mean,
<v Speaker 1>this isn't just the Australia. Yes, this isn't just the
<v Speaker 1>Wikipedia page. Like there's a legitimate article out there that's
<v Speaker 1>like he hits I don't know, I don't you know.
<v Speaker 1>Did he thumb a ride on a barge of I
<v Speaker 1>don't even it's weird.
<v Speaker 3>Well done to him.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, good job. So in fifty five, the Ghib Brothers
<v Speaker 1>they start a little rock and roll slash skiffle band.
<v Speaker 1>Have you heard the term skiffle before?
<v Speaker 3>No?
<v Speaker 1>I don't think so. Okay. So it's this music that
<v Speaker 1>was kind of the precursor to what a lot of
<v Speaker 1>rock and roll guys did, which is a combination of
<v Speaker 1>American folk, jazz and blues. So they're starting off in
<v Speaker 1>the same way that the Beatles are starting off a
<v Speaker 1>bunch of other big bands from the UK. But they're
<v Speaker 1>down in Australia and they're young men fifty five. The
<v Speaker 1>oldest one Berry would have been eleven and the other
<v Speaker 1>two would have just been eight. But they're getting some
<v Speaker 1>TV appearances, they're starting to make some singles that they're releasing,
<v Speaker 1>but nothing exciting is happening yet. So since they're not
<v Speaker 1>doing anything exciting in Australia, let's see what's happening with
<v Speaker 1>mister Robert Stigwood up in the UK. Okay. He goes
<v Speaker 1>up there and he does a few odd jobs, ultimately
<v Speaker 1>ends up working with a theatrical agency, convinces a businessman, hey,
<v Speaker 1>will you finance my theatrical agency. I'm going to get
<v Speaker 1>some of these theater actors and have them be in
<v Speaker 1>TV commercials in the UK. Okay. So it's doing okay,
<v Speaker 1>and he's got this client named John Leyton. John is
<v Speaker 1>in this like Oxofamily commercial and doing these little bit parts.
<v Speaker 1>But he goes to Stigwood and he says, hey, you know,
<v Speaker 1>I really wanted to be a pop star. I mean,
<v Speaker 1>I like acting, but I'm really a singer. And Robert
<v Speaker 1>stick was like, well, let's just go take you to
<v Speaker 1>the record company. He said, well, I've already been, you know,
<v Speaker 1>and they all turned me down. So Robert stick Wood
<v Speaker 1>was like, Okay, I'm going to take you over the
<v Speaker 1>recording studio. We're going to have a professional engineer do
<v Speaker 1>one of your songs, okay. And so they go over
<v Speaker 1>there and they record this song called Johnny Remember Me. Okay.
<v Speaker 1>Then Robert Stigwood goes to the director of this TV
<v Speaker 1>series that his client is acting in, and he says, hey,
<v Speaker 1>you know this guy's playing a singer in the show.
<v Speaker 1>Why don't you have him actually sing this song? And
<v Speaker 1>the director like great, sounds like a great idea. Yeah. Well,
<v Speaker 1>the song becomes a hit from the TV show, and
<v Speaker 1>now the record companies that had rejected him are now
<v Speaker 1>beating a path to his door so that they can
<v Speaker 1>sign him. Well, of course Robert Stigwood is managing him,
<v Speaker 1>and Robert Stigwood's rock and roll career begins, and this
<v Speaker 1>song not only goes to number one. I hadn't heard
<v Speaker 1>of it, so I checked it on YouTube. YouTube three
<v Speaker 1>point two million downloads of this song. We'll play it
<v Speaker 1>for you here, he yes, sign up, screamman. Yeah. I
<v Speaker 1>hadn't heard it either, but it made Robert Stigwood a name. Okay,
<v Speaker 1>So fast forward to nineteen sixty six, couple of other
<v Speaker 1>bands that he's managing aren't really feeling like they're vibing
<v Speaker 1>too well anymore. The guitarist from one of the bands
<v Speaker 1>is like, Hey, I saw these other guys that were
<v Speaker 1>in a trio. I kind of would like to do
<v Speaker 1>something like that. Was like, Hey, I know a couple
<v Speaker 1>other guys from one of my other bands. You guys
<v Speaker 1>can all work together. And so the guitarist was Eric Clapton,
<v Speaker 1>Eric Clapton. The two other guys were Jack Bruce and
<v Speaker 1>Ginger Baker Woo, and they went on to form the
<v Speaker 1>band Cream Holy Smokes.
<v Speaker 3>Right, So Stigwood is off to a fantastic start exactly.
<v Speaker 1>So this is sixty six. He says, Hey, you know,
<v Speaker 1>I'm the booking agent for The Who. They need an
<v Speaker 1>opening band. Cream becomes with the opening band for The Who.
<v Speaker 1>By the time they get done with their tour their
<v Speaker 1>world famous.
<v Speaker 3>Wow. Hey, you mentioned that that song went to number one. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>let me just prepare myself for this episode. Okay, Okay,
<v Speaker 3>that song hit number one. That's another hit the hit
<v Speaker 3>number one, and that's another song that hit number one. Okay,
<v Speaker 3>I think I'm ready to go. Now we're going to
<v Speaker 3>talk about eight ten number one hits.
<v Speaker 1>It's absurd the amount of number one hits. Now to
<v Speaker 1>jump back if you will, to our Beg's friends. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>nineteen sixty six they record the first song that comes
<v Speaker 1>a chart topper for them, and it's a song called
<v Speaker 1>Spicks and Specs.
<v Speaker 4>Where is the song that show.
<v Speaker 1>Hits number four okay on the top fourty in Australia.
<v Speaker 1>I got a question for you. Can you tell me
<v Speaker 1>what the songs Physical by Olivia Newton, John, Genie in
<v Speaker 1>a Bottle by Christina Aguilera, and Hard Habit to Break
<v Speaker 1>by Chicago all have in common? No, I can't. They
<v Speaker 1>were all written by a guy named Steve Kipner, who
<v Speaker 1>in his very first gig was singing backup vocals on
<v Speaker 1>Spics and Specs by the Begs.
<v Speaker 3>That is a fantastic nugget right there, rabbit.
<v Speaker 1>Hole that I go down right hey.
<v Speaker 3>By the way, yes, you know he's playing guitar on
<v Speaker 3>Olivia Newton John's Physical right deve look a.
<v Speaker 1>The they had all ties together, all ties together, and
<v Speaker 1>Olivia Newton and John of course comes up a little
<v Speaker 1>bit later on with Robert Stigwood's productions. We'll get to
<v Speaker 1>that in a little bit. So by this time, obviously
<v Speaker 1>the Beatles have become huge, right, and the Begs think, hey,
<v Speaker 1>we want to go be a part of this British
<v Speaker 1>invasion that's happening. So in January of sixty seven they
<v Speaker 1>go back to the UK and they start pumping themselves.
<v Speaker 1>The dad is their manager and he's really trying to
<v Speaker 1>get them out there. So one of the guys that
<v Speaker 1>they end up talking to is the manager for the Beatles,
<v Speaker 1>Brian Epstein. I mean, he's the guy who made the
<v Speaker 1>Beatles famous. Incredible name, and he says, hey, you know,
<v Speaker 1>I'm a little busy. I don't think that you're probably
<v Speaker 1>right for me, but I just merged my company with
<v Speaker 1>this guy named Robert Stigwood, and he's from Australia. You
<v Speaker 1>guys should talk to him. Wow, do you see how
<v Speaker 1>the stars are? Okay? So Stigwood says, I love these guys.
<v Speaker 1>They sound just like the Beatles, and if you listen
<v Speaker 1>to their sixties recordings, they have a very Beatles style
<v Speaker 1>of their music. And so they decide, hey, we're gonna
<v Speaker 1>go check out some musical venues. They go over to
<v Speaker 1>New York City. They happen to catch Otis Redding playing
<v Speaker 1>at the Apollo Theater. Now, I watched the documentary that's
<v Speaker 1>out right now on the Beg's, and here's the way
<v Speaker 1>this story goes. In the documentary, Robert Stigwood takes them
<v Speaker 1>to New York, they see Otis Redding, they love Otis Redding.
<v Speaker 1>They decide to write a song for Otis Redding, and
<v Speaker 1>unfortunately Otis Redding dies that same year, and so they
<v Speaker 1>end up recording the song themselves, and the song is
<v Speaker 1>to Love Somebody.
<v Speaker 4>Got so love Somebody, So Love Somebody.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, So I'm like, wow, that is a fantastic nugget.
<v Speaker 1>I got to talk about that on the show. The
<v Speaker 1>only problem is when I started looking at it, they
<v Speaker 1>recorded the song in April of sixty seven. Motus Writing
<v Speaker 1>didn't die until December of sixty seven. So I'm not
<v Speaker 1>sure if the memories are off or or the release
<v Speaker 1>dates are off on the internet swebs. But it's a
<v Speaker 1>good story. So let's just go with to Love Somebody
<v Speaker 1>was supposed to be an Otis writing song that became
<v Speaker 1>a beachy song. Okay, I can go with that. So
<v Speaker 1>also in sixty seven, they record a song called the
<v Speaker 1>New York Mining Disaster of nineteen forty one. This happens
<v Speaker 1>when they first go to the recording studio. They get
<v Speaker 1>there and suddenly the power goes out in the building.
<v Speaker 1>They're all sitting around waiting for the power to come
<v Speaker 1>back on. They're in pitch black. They're playing a guitar
<v Speaker 1>and it's got this kind of weird echoe effect in
<v Speaker 1>the place, and suddenly they're kind of taken to this
<v Speaker 1>idea of being trapped in a mine. And so they
<v Speaker 1>just got this kind of idea that in their head
<v Speaker 1>of what it would be like to be stuck inside
<v Speaker 1>this dark mining shaft. What they ended up with was
<v Speaker 1>a song that they named New York Mining Disaster of
<v Speaker 1>nighte forty one. There was no disaster in nineteen forty
<v Speaker 1>one in New York. There was in Pennsylvania. But I
<v Speaker 1>don't think that they really that was a part of it.
<v Speaker 1>It was just, hey, this, you know, paints the picture.
<v Speaker 1>That song becomes a top twenty hit for him. Shortly thereafter.
<v Speaker 1>August of sixty seven, they record Massachusetts. Witch goes on
<v Speaker 1>to be a huge success, and then later that month
<v Speaker 1>Brian Epstein drops Dead Gosh. Sixty seven is pretty impactful
<v Speaker 1>year for these guys, Yeah for sure. Okay. So suddenly
<v Speaker 1>the manager of the Beatles dies and so the question is, hey,
<v Speaker 1>is Bob Stickwood going to become the new manager for
<v Speaker 1>the Beatles? And it looked like he was the guy
<v Speaker 1>who would be the heir apparent right to me. The
<v Speaker 1>only problem is the Beatles said, f you, no way,
<v Speaker 1>not going to happen. And so, since they've got this
<v Speaker 1>company together and the Beatles are refusing to have him
<v Speaker 1>as a manager, he is asked to leave the company.
<v Speaker 1>But it's not a bad deal for him. He goes
<v Speaker 1>out with what they call a golden handshake. You've heard
<v Speaker 1>about the golden parachute for executives, you know it. It's
<v Speaker 1>pig severance back. Well, the golden handshakes like a step
<v Speaker 1>above that. Like he gets all the money, all the retirement,
<v Speaker 1>everything all at once. And he goes on to form
<v Speaker 1>his own RSO Records, which now has Cream and the
<v Speaker 1>begs RSO.
<v Speaker 3>I remember RSO Records when I was a kid. I
<v Speaker 3>just remember the little bull on the record label.
<v Speaker 1>Nice good throwback. Okay, all right. Unfortunately, in nineteen sixty eight,
<v Speaker 1>Cream disbands. They're done, right. Eric Clapton goes on to
<v Speaker 1>form Blind Faith in sixty eight. They had some great stuff,
<v Speaker 1>but it just wasn't popular at the time. Next thing
<v Speaker 1>that he puts together is Derek and the Dominos, Right
<v Speaker 1>Huge Album, Right Huge, Leyla and other love.
<v Speaker 3>Songs, the flashback jar Goodfellas episode.
<v Speaker 1>Thank You Always waiting for that? Okay? The only problem
<v Speaker 1>is it also doesn't do very well when it first
<v Speaker 1>is released, and so wow. Eric Clapton has now gone
<v Speaker 1>through three bands, has had not the huge success that
<v Speaker 1>he thought he would have, and his best buddies Jimmy
<v Speaker 1>Hendrix and Dwayne Allman both so he spirals in depression.
<v Speaker 1>The same time, the Beg's are breaking up. Robin is
<v Speaker 1>tired of Barry. Barry is tired of Robin. Robin's like,
<v Speaker 1>you know what I'm done, and he leaves. So Cream's
<v Speaker 1>falling apart. Begee's are falling apart. Robert Sigwood is in
<v Speaker 1>a predicament, it seems, and Eric Clapton has gone into
<v Speaker 1>this huge depression from the loss of his friends, the
<v Speaker 1>bad album reviews, and his unrequited love by Patty Boyd.
<v Speaker 1>You know Patty Boyd is right.
<v Speaker 3>Patty is George Harrison's wife.
<v Speaker 1>Correct, Yes, you nailed it.
<v Speaker 3>Wow.
<v Speaker 1>So at first, obviously she's married to George Harrison. She
<v Speaker 1>is not going to return his love, and so he's depressed. Now.
<v Speaker 1>Ultimately she ends up divorcing Harrison and Mary and Clapton.
<v Speaker 1>But that's a story for another day. But the song
<v Speaker 1>Layla is about her and the fact that she is
<v Speaker 1>not returning his love. She's got him mind his knees, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>begging please.
<v Speaker 3>Hey. Eric Clapton was supposed to join the Beatles at
<v Speaker 3>some point in this whole thing, right, yeah, I mean
<v Speaker 3>they Is this the Eric Clapton Podcast.
<v Speaker 1>I'm sorry, Yeah, no, no, it's but it all comes back.
<v Speaker 1>I'm bringing it full up. Just wait, just wait, right,
<v Speaker 1>And so the Beg's put some albums out that are
<v Speaker 1>just Barry and Maurice in there, none of them very good.
<v Speaker 1>So even though all of Robert Stigwood's world is falling
<v Speaker 1>apart right now, he is having some success stories outside
<v Speaker 1>of rock music, with a production of a few Broadway hits,
<v Speaker 1>one of which is Jesus Christ Superstar nineteen seventy three.
<v Speaker 1>Young man comes into audition for him. You brought this
<v Speaker 1>up on our last podcast. Can you tell me who
<v Speaker 1>that young man was?
<v Speaker 3>That young man's name was John Travolta, and he didn't
<v Speaker 3>get the part.
<v Speaker 1>He did not, but Robert Stigwood remembered him. So Stigwood
<v Speaker 1>is thinking, Okay, what you need, Eric Clapton is a
<v Speaker 1>change of scene. So in nineteen seventy four, he's like,
<v Speaker 1>I'm gonna take you away from the bad influences that
<v Speaker 1>you have, get you in a nice sunny place so
<v Speaker 1>you can't be sad. We're gonna go to Miami, Florida,
<v Speaker 1>and you're gonna record an album. He records an album
<v Speaker 1>and titles it The Place Where Stayed four six' One Ocean,
<v Speaker 1>boulevard which has a little song you might have heard
<v Speaker 1>of on there CALLED I shot The. Sheriff and at
<v Speaker 1>this point he sees the success that he's been missing
<v Speaker 1>his whole, life and he, says you know, What, robert
<v Speaker 1>maybe the begs need a change of scenery, Too and
<v Speaker 1>So robert, says, yeah let me see IF i can
<v Speaker 1>get them Over. Miami they bring Back, Robin robin's with,
<v Speaker 1>Them maury's is with, Them berries with them all. Together
<v Speaker 1>we're going to record this album In miami called Main,
<v Speaker 1>course which has another song you might have heard of Called.
<v Speaker 3>Dove talking The falsetto's.
<v Speaker 1>Back, yeah so that is How Eric clapton resurrected The beg's.
<v Speaker 3>Career thank You Eric clapton for saving The beg's and
<v Speaker 3>giving this this fantastic album we're going to talk about.
<v Speaker 3>Today SO i want.
<v Speaker 1>To talk about a couple of things with main. Course, Okay,
<v Speaker 1>first it has is the first appearance of the logo
<v Speaker 1>that is totally recognizable as The beg's. Logo, now okay

<v Speaker 1>you know who the album the artist was for that?
<v Speaker 1>Album you, know a young guy who had been doing
<v Speaker 1>some other albums but hadn't really hit his major success
