Matt Barnes Calls Out Pat Bev Over D-Wade Disrespect
Matt Barnes opens up ATS Unplugged by calling out Patrick Beverley over recent comments about Dwyane Wade, saying the energy behind the debate feels more like clickbait than basketball analysis.
Matt and Vernon “Mad Max” Maxwell also break down why Wade still gets the nod over James Harden for many fans, react to Duke’s late-game collapse in March Madness, debate whether Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Luka Dončić, or Victor Wembanyama deserves MVP, and discuss why Joe Mazzulla belongs in Coach of the Year conversations.

00:00:00 Speaker 1: Welcome back to Unplugged. I got my brother Mad Maximus with me today. 00:00:05 Speaker 2: Max, I appreciate you, bro. 00:00:06 Speaker 3: Hey Man, I appreciate you Man. I have me on him, Matt. I look forward to it every day week. I look forward to you. 00:00:12 Speaker 2: I have me Max you How can I not? Max? They love O Max. 00:00:17 Speaker 4: You better know it. He keep reaching. 00:00:19 Speaker 2: Mad appreciate. 00:00:22 Speaker 5: Uh. 00:00:22 Speaker 2: Today. I wanted to start the show before we get into it. 00:00:26 Speaker 1: And I've just seen been seeing this Pat Bev situation and in the d Wade disrespect, and I just wanted to. 00:00:36 Speaker 2: Talk about it. 00:00:37 Speaker 1: And obviously everyone has their rights to their opinion, you know. And to say that James Harden is better to guard than Dwayne Wade is obviously his opinion. I don't think facts back that up. And that's no knock on James. I think James is one of the greatest scores point guard. I think he's on the top ten where's the top ten and assists top ten scoring? Yeah, I mean James is absolutely incredible, and I think it's a fair, fair argument. I think why d Wade possibly gets a nod by a lot of people's because d Wade played the other end of the basketball as well, you know, three all differensive teams, and I think he's an all time leader in shot blocks for a two guard if I'm not mistaken. And you know, when you talk about the hierarchy of two guards again, it's just an opinion. You put MJ, you put Kobe, you put d Wade, and then you know it's a conversation between James Harden and Alan Iverson. So to me, it was less about the rankings of the players are talking about, and more just about Pat Bev's energy. 00:01:42 Speaker 2: I mean this gets well, still gets yeah. 00:01:46 Speaker 1: I mean he gets kicked off his own show and replaced on his own show. He goes to legal troubles which you never you never really want to laugh about. 00:01:53 Speaker 2: I'm glad they were able to their legal troubles out. But you get kicked off your own show. Yeah, you get kicked off your own show. 00:02:00 Speaker 1: Bar stool plays in your face, your partners don't want you back, and you figure, now, let me let me try to go viral. Let me try to get my own shit off the ground by by by shooting at d Wade, who doesn't fuck with no one stays in his own lane. 00:02:13 Speaker 2: And I was glad d Wade says something. You know what I mean? 00:02:15 Speaker 1: Because D Wade is very non confrontational. He's chilling, he's living his life. He's a Hall of Famer. He doesn't need to do this. 00:02:22 Speaker 2: And now I saw Pat Bev switch the conversation to a three. 00:02:27 Speaker 1: He's not a three. Who gives a fuck if he's a three point shooter or not. The motherfucker did it on the highest level. Three time NBA champ average, what thirty six in the finals at one point is the finals MVP? You know, eleven or twelve time All Star And again both James and and d wait, it's it's it's definitely a debate. But I think, you know, in my opinion, Wade gets the nod. But I just I think Pat Bev is doing what people hate about sports media is you're trying to do the clickbait. You're trying to take shots at people to try to put yourself back in a spotlight that you lost. You know, you went a way to play, then you got in some trouble, you get kicked off your own show. I just you know, and I like I've seen Pat. The one time I said something to Pat, he tried to do say some slick shit about CP a while back, and I had to check him on ESPN. But overall, I think he has a lot of talent. He adds insight to it. But just don't become adjacent shiplock. Don't try to rebuild your reputation or your platform by trying to ship on people like rebuild your platform by talking real ship and giving real opinions on and again. Your opinion of James is your opinion. I respect it, but I just think the way you're trying to attack the Waighte as weak as fuck and it's not going to work. People see the bullshit look in your own comments. Your people in your comments are telling you your fullo shit bro. So anyway, Max, I just had to get that off my chest. I don't know if you want to add anything to. 00:03:47 Speaker 6: It or not now past my guy man and I like that Pat. He was out of pot, you know, I mean, come on, man, I mean you you know you know better than that man. 00:04:01 Speaker 4: You know how to handle the situation. 00:04:03 Speaker 3: Man, You ain't got to use a mother motherfucker that you know to get you know what you're trying to get, you know what I mean? So fat know what he did man fat us wrong man, stand up on that man right. 00:04:15 Speaker 2: Stand up, yeah and get back and yeah. 00:04:18 Speaker 4: And do it the right way. Just do it. Just do it. 00:04:22 Speaker 1: And he's got the basketball knowledge and I to do it the right way. So you don't like to say you don't have to shoot on somebody to try to get your number. I looked at his page and that's the highest looking that. It just got dropped this morning and it's three hundred some thousand views, and I'm just like, Bro, you don't have to go this route, Like you know the game well enough to just speak your truth and in the fact, so trying to shut on someone else to try to raise your platform that shit is weak. But anyway, Max, the final four is set. You can Illinois, Michigan and Arizona. I think this your u n CUAA tournament has been incredible. Yes, that you can't do game was crazy. Would have been some of your favorite moments thus far in the tournament. 00:05:07 Speaker 3: A Cup at first of all, just seeing him what he did in the tournament, man. 00:05:12 Speaker 4: That was incredible. 00:05:13 Speaker 3: I mean, I mean just I mean that was I mean just what he did was incredible for me to see that part right there. A Cup and one more thing. Man, damn to see Duke lose the way they did. Man, that was crazy. Man, that was a crazy loss. But I mean we got to you got, I mean, now we they had to lead by two points, and they passing the ball around like it's a fucking hot potato like it like motherfucker's scared to go to the free throw line and close. 00:05:42 Speaker 4: The game out. 00:05:43 Speaker 3: Man, hold the ball, Man, where you throwing the ball for? I don't know, I mean, first, sorry, I got it, but I mean, you gotta. I mean, but like I always say, man, you gotta. That's coaching too, Man, that that's that's coaching part right there too. I mean, I mean, I don't know if they had a time, I don't know fuck was going on, but I know they just hit a big shot and it was kind of went crazy and then they got there real quick and Sar got it and then he threw it up to Caden. 00:06:10 Speaker 2: The big boozer. 00:06:12 Speaker 1: Big boozer got it to Caen, so Cam got the inbound or Cam and then went back to saarrow right sorrow went to Caden. 00:06:21 Speaker 2: And then that's. 00:06:22 Speaker 3: Why why are we throwing this motherfucker so much? I mean it's ten it's ten seconds, I think on the shot. I went on the on the game plot. So why are we doing all this ship? I mean, I mean, so hold the ball, they gotta foul you. So I mean, I ain't understand that part, but I mean I blame the damn coach all that. And then because first of all, you got to have slim up there, the best ret throw shoot. 00:06:46 Speaker 4: You got him way down there on the other side of the court. 00:06:50 Speaker 3: It's gotta be you gotta be somewhere in there were setting a screen for Isaac Evans to get the ball, and. 00:06:55 Speaker 4: I mean, he's the best rethrow shoot on the team. 00:06:57 Speaker 3: He's got to be able to get that ball and hold that ball where they could file and the game's over. 00:07:02 Speaker 4: It shouldn't even came to that fan. 00:07:04 Speaker 3: But I mean, sometimes we got to look at these high profile ass coaches that we be like praising all the goddamn time. 00:07:11 Speaker 2: Too. They make mistakes too, So Braidlon Mullins. Is that his name? 00:07:15 Speaker 1: The kid that he had shot out to that it was a hell of a shot foremost. And then I want to be a little bit of a devil's advocate because I think that that's a split second decision. Cayden had to make that pass. And if you think about it, he caught the ball coming left on the move and he sees two guys coming at him, and keep in mind, Max, if he gets the ball over the fingertips, it's a dunk in the game is over. And I think a lot of times, I mean everyone's saying he could have held the ball, which is right, he could have held the ball got fouled into the foul line. But I'm thinking nine out of ten times, guys are going to try to make that pass because you have two guys coming at you. You know, if you get that ball over the top of their hands, they dunk it and you're in the final four. 00:08:01 Speaker 2: So I got a chance to reach out to Booze and just obviously. 00:08:07 Speaker 4: Cut you off. 00:08:07 Speaker 3: I'm not I'm not never saying Kaytening did nothing wrong. I blame that coach. That's the coach. I blame that coach. 00:08:14 Speaker 1: Yeah, but yeah, I know I'm saying I reached out the Booze just to tell him, man, he's got to help protect Cayden's mental because I know how nasty social media is and the way they're going to try to dog him, and he had a really good game. If I'm not mistaken, he missed one shot. I think he had thirteen or fifteen points, five assists. Play really well, obviously, Cam twenty one, ten uh and and four over. Is that the tournament? Over the tournament? You know that's probably his last college game. But you know, I just want to tell Cayden to hold his head up. 00:08:44 Speaker 2: Man. He he came in with old boy, got hurt. 00:08:47 Speaker 1: The kid that went to not or not Notre Dame? Was it Notre Dame? Foster went to Notre Dame? I think out here in the Mission League. He came in and played well. And it's just an unfortunate situation. Wa and what social media, It's gonna be a bunch of fucking dick heads. They're going to try to tear his you know, his mental down and his character down. But I just want to tell you bro, both you twins. I mean, Cam, hell of a college career. 00:09:11 Speaker 4: Bro. 00:09:12 Speaker 2: You know you're gonna be a top three pick in the NBA. Good luck, and then cade man. 00:09:16 Speaker 1: Use this situation as fire and fuel when you get back out there to drive you in and block all the other bullshit out. Because the bullshit doesn't matter. You did a great job. You're gonna have a you know, a wonderful career dues and continue to push forward. 00:09:29 Speaker 2: Max a couple of things that were interesting. I like Hurley. I love his energy. 00:09:33 Speaker 1: I got a chance to talk to him at a eybl tournament I think a couple of years ago. 00:09:38 Speaker 2: But the shot was huge. 00:09:40 Speaker 1: You saw the ref and Hurley go face to face and it wasn't necessarily a had but but their foreheads kissed each other. Is that as anybody else man? And then also you got to think about when when they hit the shot, motherfuckers ran on the court game about hey, the shot was so big that I kind of think for a second everybody was out of bodies, so no one was really within their right mind to think I've never seen a coach. 00:10:13 Speaker 2: Go forehead to forehead with a rend ever nothing. 00:10:17 Speaker 1: And then to have players jump on the court and people coaches on the court, and it's just like damn. But also you gotta think like it's always been this way, probably even back when you played, Like Duke is a program that people don't like just it just kind of is what it is. 00:10:31 Speaker 2: It's not it has nothing to do with the players. It's just kind of. 00:10:34 Speaker 1: The history of Duke is Yeah, is a program that people. So it was just a very interesting, great game. Obviously Duke gave the lead up and but but at the same time, you can't took that ship, you know, you can't took that ship. 00:10:48 Speaker 2: And Mullins. 00:10:50 Speaker 1: Mulleins hit that shot at the end, and it's gonna go down in n C double a history man. 00:10:54 Speaker 4: So absolutely. 00:10:55 Speaker 1: Yeah, the Final four set, Max, who do you have? So it's it's Arizona versus the Noise, right. 00:11:01 Speaker 2: Yeah, it's Illinois Yukon, Illinois Yukon, and Michigan in Arizona. 00:11:08 Speaker 1: In Illinois favor in those games, Michigan is favored over Arizona. Really, so wow, that's interesting. 00:11:19 Speaker 2: Michigan's playing well, don't get me. 00:11:21 Speaker 4: Wrong, Michigan. They got all them old last men over there too. 00:11:25 Speaker 2: Now they got they got some grown ups, child support. 00:11:27 Speaker 3: Already, kids, got families, got kids in the back. 00:11:35 Speaker 1: I'm excited about this Final four. I think it's gonna it's gonna be great. So definitely looking forward to it and we'll recap it after it happens. 00:11:43 Speaker 2: Max. 00:11:43 Speaker 1: Moving on to the n b A, the MVP race is heating up. The Lakers hottest fish grease Lucas thrown itself up in that s g A and winby conversation, Lucas been killing. Lucas is forty points, eight rebounds, and seven assists over the last twelve games. Those are Kobe type numbers only only only Laker to ever average those number. Of those stretch, they won fifteen out of seventeen games. I think they're locked into that third spot in eight. It's pretty safe to say they're locked in the third unless something crazy happens. SGA is thirty one points on fifty five percent shooting from the field. Okay, see is the one seed. Only other personal compass those type of numbers is yours. Truly the only motherfucker you had to get rest for. 00:12:30 Speaker 4: You had Michael, Joe, and I get telling you Michael. 00:12:35 Speaker 1: And then Wemby twenty four to eleven. Obviously the numbers aren't in the thirties and forties like Luca. But at the same time, the other two guys I had mentioned aren't the same. The same presence they have in the offensive end isn't the same presence they have on the defensive end. And Wemby has that presence. He should be the defensive player of the Year this year. They're twenty five and two over their last twenty seven games. He's at twenty four and eleven with about two weeks to go in the season. Max, I'm gonna put you on the spot, Luca, s g A Wemby, who's your MVP. 00:13:12 Speaker 4: Hell, we're talking about man SGA. You see that ship that man did last night. Man, that's g s g A. 00:13:18 Speaker 2: Man. 00:13:18 Speaker 4: Oh that's my guy, Man s g A. I mean, it's it's close. Now, don't get me fucked up. Man, it's close. 00:13:28 Speaker 3: This s g A, Man, s g A and them, they just gotta he just gotta. You see, they've been They increased his minutes. You know, he never played this many minutes, s g A because he had. They had to because when he is right on his ass. Yeah, he's right on his ass. 00:13:45 Speaker 4: So but s g A is the MVP. 00:13:48 Speaker 3: Man, I mean, how many we got two weeks left of the ship, So Man, s g A, Man, this s g A and my guy. 00:13:55 Speaker 1: I have no and and particularly because the guys were talking about are one two three in the Western Conference. I have no issue with either of those guys. 00:14:03 Speaker 2: Winning. 00:14:04 Speaker 1: I agree, I think SGA will win, but I wouldn't be mad at Luca getting it for the first for the first time, which I don't think he will. But there's gonna come a time where Wimby is going to be the m v. 00:14:15 Speaker 2: P and the Defensive Player of the Year. MJ did that. 00:14:20 Speaker 1: MJ did it once, right, Yeah, I think yeah, MJ did it when I was in second grade. 00:14:26 Speaker 4: I think. 00:14:27 Speaker 3: I think Kendrick Perkins says something to day on the show that David Steven. He said that, hey, he's gonna. 00:14:36 Speaker 4: Be on Mount wesh Moore top four. Yeah, yeah, he's there. 00:14:41 Speaker 3: He said, women's gonna end up being up there, so somebody's gonna get removed from up there. 00:14:47 Speaker 4: So he said he's gonna be up there. That's what he said. 00:14:50 Speaker 2: The time. 00:14:51 Speaker 3: By time his career is over with, he's gonna be one of those guys. 00:14:55 Speaker 2: Wemby's only twenty two years. 00:14:57 Speaker 4: That's what I'm trying to tell you. 00:14:59 Speaker 1: It's I mean, the future is so bright. Guy willing able to stay healthy, his mindset. He's brought the competitive juice back to the All Star Game. He throws his heart into every single game. He doesn't give a fuck about being cool with other people, Like he's in here to play basketball and to be. 00:15:18 Speaker 3: The best team. Nobody else they don't want to be friends with you. 00:15:23 Speaker 1: As shout out to Jason Tatum, fresh off in Achilles, comes back Eastern Conference Player of the Week. And he's only been back with three weeks. If I'm not mistaken over this three game span twenty six ten and seven assists. Boston is three and oh, I think they're locked into that second spot. You know, you look at who is it? Detroit is won in the Eastern Conference, right. 00:15:52 Speaker 2: Boston and New York? I don't know who? Who? 00:15:56 Speaker 1: Who do you have coming out the East? Actually, you know Cleveland can get hot. Detroit they haven't been playing their best basketball towards lad and it's all about getting hot at the right time. I think Boston has been there. They've done that, they got Jason Tatum back. There hasn't been any chemistry issues like everyone was trying to say there would be. If you had to pick one team to represent the Eastern Conference two weeks before the playoffs start, Max, who would be your squad? 00:16:22 Speaker 4: Oh man? 00:16:23 Speaker 3: I mean if Kate the punction long, I don't know. I mean they're long. I don't know something with the long issues that wouldn't. 00:16:31 Speaker 2: How much longer? 00:16:31 Speaker 3: Is he outs no timetable, but they don't even know so, And so I gotta go with Boston Celtics. You know what I mean, because I mean Tatum's getting back in the rhythm. I mean they I mean defensively, offensively, I meant Brown over there. 00:16:49 Speaker 4: I mean so, I mean you got. 00:16:51 Speaker 3: White, I mean, I mean you got I mean they just gotta I mean, you gotta go with those guys. 00:16:56 Speaker 4: I got I like Boston coming out the East? 00:17:00 Speaker 2: Is what's the coach's name? Forgive me? It is blink? Is Missoula? Can Missoula be coach of the Year? 00:17:04 Speaker 1: Name another team that your best player has been hurt eighty percent of the season and you're still in the second seed and a lot of people say Jalen Brown as this He's final MVP, respectfully as possible that Jason Tatum was the best player on that team. Is there another team that can lose their best player? If Shay's out, whereas okay, see if Wemby's out, if Luca's out, if these, if these best player on the team is out. Name another team that can keep the ship afloat, stay at the second seed. I think Missoula's coach. 00:17:37 Speaker 2: Of the Year. 00:17:38 Speaker 4: I don't think. 00:17:39 Speaker 3: I don't think there's another team can do that. But what I'm saying about what Missoula said, though, Missoula said, fuck that shit. He said the coach of the year. That ward is overrated. He said that award, he said, that's what he said straight out of his mouth. Missoula said, fuck the water. 00:17:56 Speaker 2: They're gonna take a look at that. I want to hear it. Matt picked this year for Country. 00:18:02 Speaker 3: I was wondering what winning that award mean to you, and if there's anything in particular that you've taken pride in accomplishing from a coaching perspective. 00:18:09 Speaker 5: This year, however, there's a way to make sure that the staff and the players you don't get the appreciation, you know. 00:18:19 Speaker 2: I think it's a stupid award. 00:18:22 Speaker 5: They shouldn't have it. And it's more about the players, and it's more about the work that the staff puts in. And it's just that simple. I really don't ever want to be asked or talked about it again. 00:18:32 Speaker 2: It's just that dumb. 00:18:33 Speaker 5: So the players play, it's about them, staff works their ass off. 00:18:36 Speaker 2: I'm grateful that. I respect that. 00:18:38 Speaker 1: I thought he said that award, man, you just threw that funck word in there just for a little color. 00:18:42 Speaker 2: And see he. 00:18:43 Speaker 4: Said he didn't care about that award. It was overrated, you know, almost. 00:18:47 Speaker 3: Like how Max be, you know, added a little ship on it. 00:18:57 Speaker 1: The Pistons, I mean, they've they've had a great season. Obviously, we spoke to Caid. They've been ten and three without him, which is solid, but we know to make a real run they're gonna need him during during that time twenty three and twelve. We know he's a young star in the making. He got his first All Star NOD, that's his first All Star DOT this year. He's about to get paid. He's about to on hisself. Yes, but Pistons have done a great job without him, without Cad in the lineup. What are your thoughts on this team? I love it because this team has built the right way. They got a really good coach who got fucked at his last stop. And Detroit basketball is I love it when they're good. 00:19:38 Speaker 2: I mean, the home court advantage is amazing. 00:19:40 Speaker 1: Your thoughts on Detroit, uh, and just what they've done up to this point. 00:19:45 Speaker 3: You know, the coach maker style. Loved Noah's dad, same net agree come from. I mean the cloth is I mean, they just have he coaches just liking mom. 00:19:58 Speaker 4: I love what he built over there. 00:20:00 Speaker 3: I mean, but I swear to God, they got to get CA's got to. 00:20:03 Speaker 4: Get back healthy. I mean, I mean, I mean that's I mean, I. 00:20:06 Speaker 3: Know that's a that's not something that's an injury that you can just like go and get something health and yeah, okay, yeah you gotta take your time with that. But but they got to get him back. 00:20:17 Speaker 4: But during man is. 00:20:18 Speaker 2: A he's a dog man. 00:20:19 Speaker 3: I mean, like you said, he betted on himself and a great damn the motherfucker that motherfucker May seven and eleven coming out he hit, he did roll, he was he hit the seventh eleven coming out. So that's a blessing for him. 00:20:35 Speaker 4: Man. 00:20:35 Speaker 3: But now kudos to the uh. I mean, they're gonna be tough though. I mean, if Ca can get back, I mean, just all the other players that's coming off the bench, man, they're playing so well, they have to step up, man. So that's a lot of guys and that's the that's that's that's a that's something we got to say about. 00:20:53 Speaker 4: The coach man. 00:20:53 Speaker 3: You know what I mean by bigger staff man, because I mean to bring those guys together, and those guys still winning and playing and as hard as they plan and they play the hardest hell on defense. That's what the game's won at Matt. We know that men, You know that mean so and they play hard every night. So I mean to have those guys are buying it this ship and do this every night without k They lead it out there on the floor. 00:21:14 Speaker 4: Man. That's amazing. 00:21:16 Speaker 2: Man. 00:21:16 Speaker 1: So back to the game, Max, the Spurs nine game winning streak definitely are contenders. They are four and one against the Thunder, two and a half games back from first. What do you think a seven game series between OKC and the San Antonio Spurs would reveal? 00:21:41 Speaker 3: Well, I don't know, but the way it's been lucky through the regular season, I like Spurs, man, because they match against very well, very I mean I mean everything, Okay got ship, Spurs got it too. I mean, especially the perimeter players. The Spurs are long of the I think the Spurs are longer. I don't know, bigger, but yeah, bigger, yeah, but I mean I really, I mean what I've been seeing them in the regular season, man, I just gotta but I know it's different now in the playoff. You know, it slows down, Matt, Now it slows down. And okay, say they don't Okay, see they haven't been there. They done this ship, So now that part right there, that's an advantage. But shit, I mean, I mean, you got that motherfucker whatever they call him Lurch or whatever the fuck they call him, Wendy. He he's I mean, ship, He's gonna make a difference man on the defensive band man when they player. I mean, he's just he's just, he's he's I mean, I gotta say the Spurs, man, if I mean, I gotta say the Spurs. 00:22:41 Speaker 1: Yeah, I want to shout out miss Johnson to Seattle guy. Uh, first year coach who's done a great job. Obviously, filling pop shoes is no easy feet, no pun intended. But to go into this organization and and you know, I remember, you know, I see Jamal and guys like Nate, they all had great things to say. So I know he's a solid dude. But he's gone in there and done a great job his first year. Man, So I'm really excited to see what san Antonio can do this year around. This could be I think they might still be playing with house money. I think they're still early to the dance. 00:23:15 Speaker 2: You know. Oh, second season, excuse me, second season for shit. 00:23:19 Speaker 4: He can he can be shit. He can be coach of the year. Shit, look what he's doing for me.
