Speaker 1: I'll say it was a great It was a great time with my boys. Got a chance to see Jim Tomy, Charlie Naggy, my old teammate and roommate, uh, carlos by Erga, Kenny Lofton, Uh, just so many great people. And I got to see a good old friend of mine named Carl Willis the Train who was a pitching coach for a long long time and has been with Cleveland and was with Seattle, and I was with him in Boston. Great people. It was just a really really good time getting back and doing some serious reminiscing and talking about old school baseball and us all commimorating about how the game has changed.

Speaker 6: And I had heard the root of the bad blood was a hilarious story that there was an intersquad game one year in spring training where Viskel hit a walk off home run against Mesa and proceeded to do a cartwheel across home plate and Mason did not take that very well and it started a lifelong feud.

Speaker 1: It is a true story. A couple of different pieces of this story it was a home run, was a walk off, and our man Paul Hoins was the man who actually corroborated your story. But Paul Hoins hopefully going into the Hall of Fame here shortly. Yes, But anyway, Hoynsey's a great, great human being and a great writer for long long time. I'm there for the Cleveland Dealer. I believe in its plain dealer, plain dealer. Anyway, I asked him, talked to him about it, and he said, yes, he does remember that. I did not remember it. I'm not sure if I must have been at the game because it was in spring training, because it was an interest squad game, and there has been I mean, that was a many of the reasons why they've one of the many reasons that these two had some bad blood. Omarvis Scale wrote in his book about how much of a woos Jose Mason was and couldn't finish the deal in ninety seven. So from that point on, Jose was a good adrilling every time he based him, which was a problem for me when I was a GM and assistant GM. Anyway, Yeah, he corroborated the story. It did happen, and apparently as athletic as Omarvis scale was he didn't really even know how to do a cartwheel, so it was like a fake ass cartwheel, Like it.

But then the Phillies answer back on Thursday night, Kyle Schwarber hits four home runs, ties a major league record, and then they win Friday night, they win, Saturday night, they lose Sunday. So as we wake up on Monday morning, the Phillies have a six game lead over the Mets in the National Leagueest because guess what the Mets did against the Marlins.

Sky is falling in Philly on Thursday morning. Now the sky is falling in New York on Monday. And the Phillies of course have a big series against the Brewers beginning on Monday. But would you guys think of the little bounce back. How the Phillies answered that that awful, awful week in New York.

Speaker 6: I thought it was tremendous on the Phillies part. You take three, three or four. I know the Braves are not you know, the Braves were accustomed seeing they're not going to make their annual trip to October this year.

Speaker 6: You know, the Mets series, you got to view it as a snapshot. You can't view it as the as the you know, the entire season. And they, you know, it started. The bounce back started in Game one against Atlanta. Noly gives up three in the first, but they come back with three home runs in the bottom of the first and they kind of made a statement. And Thompson called it a character win, and indeed was a character win. And then they go out and they grind out a second win. They get a great start from Sanchez and they get a walk off from Turner and all in all, you know, the sky ain't falling anymore.

Speaker 6: Some days, some days you are as low as you can go and and other days you feel great about yourself. That's why it's always important to keep perspective and view it through the long range prism. It's okay to be concerned about how they play against the Mets. They the Phillies certainly do seem to bring out the best in the Mets. But you know they're gonna have another shot next week to to change the narrative narrative a little bit, and I think it is important. But you know, first things first, they got a big series against team with the best record in baseball, and then a big series in Miami against the team that would love to mess you up a little bit, so you cannot take your eye off, you know, that day in Major League Baseball. And I think the Phillies did a pretty good job of that over.

Speaker 5: The weekend against the Braves.

Speaker 1: It's hard to under think about a nineteen run game, you know, where you beat a team by, you know, by a whole boatload of runs as a character win. But it would be really easy for them when Nola stepped on the mound after they got blown up in New York for them to fold after the three runs he gave up early because he wasn't sharp early, but they didn't and they kept pounding the baseball and they, you know, they sort of put that game out of reach. But a couple of things that I see in that series that were big. One Nola bouncing back and finishing that game strong. That was big for them. Two having Sanchez bounce back and pitch as well as he did after his blow up. And number three Lizardo pitching his ass off in a you know, unfortunately he should have got the win. They couldn't score any runs for him, and they ended up succumbing to a big home run by the kid who was a Barwin, the left handed hitting catcher who's really impressive. He's gonna be a pain in the ass for a long long time for the Phillies. I love that kid. I love the way he swings the bat. There's some there's some good young hitters in this league that the Phillies are gonna have to contend with for a while. But I view those three games, those four games, that three taking three out of four, as you know, a bigger picture there. Even though the Atlanta Braves are not having a good year. You know, it's not. They still have a lot of talent on that team. And it's the Braves and you beat three, beat them three out of four after getting demolished in New York, that's big.

Speaker 3: Well yeah, I mean you say, you know, I think that's some fans might look at this series and mention that, like, yeah, they're not the same Brave team as they were in the past. Well, I mean the Marlins, the mar Yeah, exactly, like the Mets should have taken the Marlins to town. I know the Marlins are playing a little bit better baseball, and they have some talent on that team as well. But you know what, you know, if you're if you're a Mets fan right now, you're going, how can you not do anything against the Miami Marlins after coming off that series against against the Phillies. I know Ron Darling was I think it was on MLB Network maybe he called the the first game after the Phillies series or trap game and said, you know, coming off that, but that whole weekend they did they didn't answer the bell. So good, good, good bounce back for the Phillies.

Speaker 6: It's a week away, and like I said, you've got to focus on today. But that series against the Mets next week. Citizens Bank Park is going to be rocking. You're gonna get a little October preview. I have a feeling.

Speaker 3: Yeah, if you look at the you look at the so the if the season ended today right now, the Phillies would have the two seed and the Dodgers would have the three seed. The Mets would have the sixth seed. So there's a potential. Well yeah, if the season ended today, the Phillies in the second round the NLDS could be playing either the Dodgers or the Mets in the NLDS, which would either way it's a heck of a series. You have the Dodgers, who everybody anointed as the no doubt about it, two times World Series winner based off the offseason they had in the town that they currently have on the roster. So you have that matchup in the NLDS, which would be fun. Or you have the exercising the demons the Phillies exercising the demons of the New York Mets.

Speaker 1: So you remember, I mean they struggled with the Atlanta Braves a couple of years back, and then they beat up in the Braves in the playoffs. So I mean, listen, it's all about how you're playing at the time, the circumstance. Clearly, it's better for the Phillies to be a team that has home field advantage because they play so well at home, and so it'll be it'll be fun. It's gonna be fun, fun, fun, fun. Gotta love these Septembers.

And you think about, Jim, I think you might have talked about it last week, a month and a half from now, two months from now, two months from now, if the Phillies ended up winning the World Series, for instance, people could be talking about that was, I mean, just a huge moment in the season. Coming off this week against the Mets, Kyle Schwarber on Thursday ties a major league record with four home runs. He sets a franchise record with nine rb eyes becomes the twenty first player in baseball history to hit four home runs in the game. And I mentioned these stats last week from Sarah Langs at MLB dot com. Most home runs in the team's first one hundred and thirty four games in Philly's history, Kyle Schwarber had forty nine. Ryan Howard had forty nine. So he has a chance to set the franchise record in home runs before the end of.

Speaker 6: A gem on Sunday night, and as Ruben mentioned, deserved a better fate over his last seven starts. And this is a guy who's been you know, had that great run at the beginning. Then he was a little up and down, a little uneven, maybe had times a lot on even he's really put it together his last seven said like one pour outing in that stretch. But over his last seven he's got a two point five to nine ERA and he's only allowed twenty eight hits and forty one and two thirds innings.

Speaker 6: I would assume Rangers in there because I think he just profiles more as a starter, But hey, you never know. Do you use Lozardo's firepower in the in the bullpen or do you have him start because he's been so valuable lately. Where does Nola fit in? And oh, by the way, they made some transactions over the weekend. But getting ahead of ourselves here, I'm gonna go with his lo Wizarto. You know, your job is to make it tough on the decision makers, and he's doing that.

Speaker 1: Yeah, and Zeus actually had some great quotes afterwards saying this is as good as he's felt all year long. And then he's really happy about him being healthy number one and throwing the ball as well as he is this late in the season based on you know, his issues he had as far as health is concerned from last year. So that's good stuff. Well, I'm going to go with my man, Trey Turner. Man. I got to give him plenty of love. He put on a performance on the on both sides of the ball the other day after he walked him off on I guess it was Saturday. He had a big, big hit. He had a chance to blow it up and that before, but then he got another opportunity and and came through the big walk off base hit. But his defense has been spectacular. I have been critical of him I have been one of those guys who has been on the soapbox saying, this guy may not be able to help this team win a championship playing shortstop. Well, you got to give this man a boatload of credit. This is the best shortstop he's played his entire career. You got to give he and Bobby Dickerson a ton of love for the work that they've put in and the fact that he's gotten his confidence level, which you can see it's very obvious that he is making plays, range plays from the whole six hole all the way behind second base that have been just spectacular. Not only has he been acrobatic and athletic, but he's been consistent on the routine ball and that combination of defense, which is what they sort of paid for, that athleticism. They wanted to shore up their defense with him when they made that big signing because they felt like they could be a more athletic team. Well, he is showing why. Obviously he's got a chance. You know, he's going to have the most hits in the National League. Maybe in baseball, he's gonna end up being a contender and may end up winning the batting title. He's a guy that right now, as far as war and all that other stuff is concerned, He's a guy that you got to think about as far as MVP is concerned, because he's stealing bags as well and doing some other things, scoring runs, doing what exactly what Rob Thompson is that ask them to do. I got to give it to uh. I got to give it to Trade Turner as the best of the best in this week the manco manco best.

Speaker 5: You know, over the many years of covering.

Speaker 6: Pro sports, you know, sometimes you wonder, especially I think in baseball, you wonder how coachable guys are once they get to the big leagues. You know, I think a lot of guys are setting their ways. I think they kind of feel like they know what they're doing and they know what they have to do to be successful. So you wonder, is this guy coachable? And I think it's very important to remain coachable throughout your career. Trade Turner has proven to be very coachable. He has absorbed everything Bobby Dickerson has said and it's made him better. And you mentioned Bobby Dickerson, Rubin being a big part of this, and he is, you know, also coming into the season, they asked him to change his approach offensively a little bit. Rob Thompson did, Kevin Long did, and he responded by changing his approach, coming a tougher out, getting on base, more using a little little field, more relying more on contact. He's done a heck of a job on both sides of the ball, and I think it starts with his being open to coaching and being receptive to advice and coaching and then implementing it. That's where it's on him. That's where he's done a great job. So it's not enough accolades for the response he has had to you know, good honest critique and the performance he has had and the way he's playing for this team.

Speaker 3: Well, I remember we had we had Bobby Dickerson on what and maybe it was May we had him on the show here, and remember Bobby kind of lamenting the fact he's like, I wish I could have gotten my hands on him when he is twenty years old to twenty one years old coming out of North Carolina State. I wish I could have worked with them for just a couple of years to get rid of some of these bad habits he had gotten into. So you know, in Bobby Dickerson's mind, this is something that could have been worked on years ago. But to your point, him, Trey saw his shortcomings on defense and he's like, all right, let's get this ironed out and let's work on some things. And he's worked it out, and you look at the eye test matches up with the analytics, the metrics that are out there in terms of his a drastic improvement defensively.

Speaker 1: It's gonna be dovetail on one. What you said, Jim also about the great what the great players do, and that this is where I really feel like the great Hall of Fame type players. I'm not saying he's going to be in the Hall of Fame. He could be because his numbers are going to be great offensively as a short stop. But the reality of it is when you start thinking about Hall of Fame players and making adjustments in their careers, Ozzy Smith became a very very good hitter, a very tough out later on in his career after making some offensive adjustments over the over his career, Mike Schmidt made a drastic change in making trying to make more contact because he was a strikeout guy than strike out nearly as much. So later on in his career, as bat slowed up, he shortened up, he leveled off, he did different things that that changed him. So there's there's some great players. I'm sure I'm missing a touch. Sure is a perfect example. But you talk about some of the great players who can can see some of their uh, some of their shortcomings, make the adjustment and get better even though they don't have to in this day and age. They're bazillionaires, not there. They're set up for life. They're set up for life. Even I mean even guys like Clayton Kershaw. He continues to pitch, he adjusts, he changed the way he you know, he had to pitch.

Speaker 1: And uh. And I think about those guys and why they separate themselves because they have competitive edge. Not only are they great talents, but they also have the competitive edge and the pride it takes to to really be great.

Speaker 5: I mean, there's times when you have to make that play, but he's.

Speaker 6: Coming off that back foot and firing and over the top, and it's true, and it's getting that quicker, and he's just throwing the ball better. He's playing all around better defense. And I think that started with an openness and a willingness to listen to people you trust and be coachable and then you know, go out and make the changes yourself. So you know, a lot of people deserve some credit there, and there's no limit to what you could accomplish if you don't mind who gets the credit right exactly.

Speaker 3: It is going to be interesting to see if if both Schwarber and Turner finish this season strong, and there's no reason to think they won't where they finish in the nl m VP voting, I still think Otani will probably win it. He's probably, I mean, he is the favorite at this point, but you know, there's a very strong case to be made for Schwarber and people I think will also give Tray some serious consideration based off, as you said, rubin the war numbers, some people just starting.

Speaker 3: This is some and it's almost surprising that it was even kind of an issue, or seems to be an issue that it's It's a no brainer. If you're trying to win games, close games, you take one of your your your worst defensive outfielder out of the game, eye test, analytics test, and you put in one of the best defensive outfielders in the game in Harrison Bader. You move Max Kepler over to right, Brandon Marshall left. Total no brainer. It should be done in any close game between now and the end of the season, assuming Nick spot in the lineup isn't coming up, or there's you know, those types of circumstances.

They did it with Greg Luzinski way back when they did it with Pat Burrow. He didn't nobody bitch, you complained about it. It's what you do and the manager runs the show. And I'm actually surprised it's taken a little bit a little bit longer for this to happen. But I mean, this is something that has to happen now. It's something that I think was addressed with Castianos a couple months ago, that this is something that's gonna start to happen. And uh, you know, he had his last at bat. They needed the best defense out there with one run lead, and they took him out of the game. And you know that was that. Now, I will say this, I guess cas Anders was upset because you know, Rob Thompson wasn't the one who said it something to him. Well, he made an out, he was on the base pass. What typically happens when you take a guy out of the game when you had a double switch or defensive move is you have the coach let the player know so he doesn't run out to the field so he doesn't go round to his position. They tell him, the coach tells him, the base coach tells him, Hey, uh, they're gonna you know, you're gonna be swapped out. And so, you know, I think the fact that Cassie said something about it, you know, no one told him that was happening or whatever. That's that's not how it works. And you know, listen, this is about the team. The manager made the right move. I can understand why, with his pride, he would not want to come out of the game. I get it. He's worked hard at his craft, he's gotten better, he's made himself. He's made himself, you know, an average outfielder, he just doesn't have the same foot speed and the overall ability to flag down a tough fly ball as as Max Kepler does. And you have to have your best defense out there when you're when you're trying to guard for a win, especially here in September, when every single game means something. So I got no problem with it. I think it's the right thing to do. And uh, you know, cass and Cassie can be upset about it, but but the reality of it is, this is the right thing to do. And it's best for the team.

Speaker 3: So a lot of other stuff happened. What Phillies made a couple of roster moves. Uh Sunday, they signed Walker Buehler to a minor league contract. Walker Buehler, who is let go by the Red Sox, he's going to make a start in Triple A and then he's going to join the Phillies rotation on September twelfth against the Kansas City Royals. Give the Phillies a little bit of a six man rotation, Give a guys a little bit of a breather, which we have talked about for months and months and months. So is this going to happen? The Phillies indicated it's going to happen. We what's finally going to happen. It's not going to be Andrew Painter, It's going to be Walker Buehler. They also claimed left hander Tim Masa off of waivers from the Pirates. He is joining the Phillies bullpen on Monday in Milwaukee, and Garrett Stubbs is going to be one of the two extra men. Maz is one of them, and then Stubbs is going to be the third catcher down the stretch. So Bueller significant move. Did not pitch well for the Red Sox. He did not pitch well last season for the Dodgers in the regular season, and when the postseason turned came on, he pitched very well in the NLCS and in the World Series. Got the final out of the twenty twenty four World Series. So what do we think about these moves?

Speaker 6: I kinda look at them as almost like tryouts. I mean, they're gonna need another lefty in the bullpen with not having Alvarado. So you take a look at Maze over the final month, see what he's got. Maybe it works, I mean, low risk, high potential reward. Same thing with Bueller. I mean he's gonna give everybody a blow by making that start in Kansas City or against Kansas City, you know, So that's helpful right there, just to get an extra day for everybody. And if he pitches well in Lehigh and then pitches well here, you know, maybe he figures in beyond that, who knows. So it's kind of a These are tryout scenarios, low risk tryout scenarios that you know, I think make a lot of sense to give it a shot, see if they could be potential options as you try to put together the best twenty six to go into October with. So you know, Bueller, who will see I mean, he hasn't pitched well, but sometimes a little bit of change of scenery, stranger things have happened, So I'm totally okay.

We thought he was going to be a down the stretch difference maker and it has not happened.

Anytime you can try to add it doesn't matter how whether it's a position player or a pitcher. In this case, you know this is a guy. Anytime you can get someone who's had the experience of what Walker Bueller has done, how he's pitched in the postseason, how he's got the cohonees to be able to do it. Pitched made the last pitch of the season last year, if I do recall properly. And so when you have a guy like that and have an opportunity to get a guy like that, why not give it a shot? The lightning in the bottle. Someone has been there, done it and obviously has some Vanderbilt ties to Caleb Cotham, And so that combination is pretty important. And I think, uh, you know, bringing Tim Mason's important too. As far as Alvarado and some of the issues that Oriyan Kirkeran's going through right now, he's not real confident with his stuff. Uh, he's got to sort of bounce back to The more depth you can create in that bullpen, the better. And Uh, I like the moves. It's they're veteran moves. They're high risk, I mean, low risk, high reward type moves that could help them win a World Series. Maybe a move like we made getting a guy like uh, you know our left handed hitter Stairs, Matt Stairs. I mean he ended up doing one thing which was to hit a home run, and he did it. And then if Walker Bueller gets gets two important outs or Mason gets to get one or two important outs to win the World Series, then it's all worth it, baby, Absolutely.
