<v Speaker 1>Hey, everybody, welcome to Game Mess Mornings with Me Jeff Grub,
<v Speaker 1>your host from giant bomb dot com.
<v Speaker 2>Thank you for tuning in.
<v Speaker 1>In this episode, we're gonna be talking about one of
<v Speaker 1>the biggest switch to games of the year that is
<v Speaker 1>now not coming out until next year, and it's Sony
<v Speaker 1>changing how it's releasing games again. We're gonna talk to
<v Speaker 1>Baron Jones about this. That's how you know it's gonna
<v Speaker 1>be a good one. Baron, how are you doing?
<v Speaker 3>You know what I am.
<v Speaker 4>I don't have brown pants on anymore. Resident Evil is
<v Speaker 4>no longer on my screen. You're safe, so we're safe.
<v Speaker 4>You know, I'm definitely having a typewriter next to me.
<v Speaker 4>I'm in a secure space. There's no giant creatures banging
<v Speaker 4>at the door, so we're lated.
<v Speaker 2>You careful, be careful in those spaces.
<v Speaker 1>I'm just saying, like, that typewriter isn't as safe as
<v Speaker 1>you think it is, so watch out, buddy. Uh yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I am glad that everyone's able to get there on
<v Speaker 1>this game. Now, what did you just turn it on
<v Speaker 1>last night at midnight and you're a plan?
<v Speaker 3>Oh?
<v Speaker 4>So, thank god for Pacific Standard time. So it was
<v Speaker 4>it was it was nine pm. I definitely was running
<v Speaker 4>it around like nine thirty because of course, I I'm
<v Speaker 4>gonna try to keep this brief as possible. Long story short,
<v Speaker 4>I pre ordered a physical deluxe back in November and
<v Speaker 4>it won't be delivered until March twenty fifth.
<v Speaker 2>Yay wait wait that's next month.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, so they got my money twice.
<v Speaker 3>Let's go count.
<v Speaker 2>I'm like, but is there a word of what happened there?
<v Speaker 2>That that's crazy?
<v Speaker 4>Well, you know what, oddly enough, and I thought we
<v Speaker 4>were going to talk about this there. It's almost impossible.
<v Speaker 4>It's almost impossible to get a hold of a physical copy.
<v Speaker 4>We've read on yesterday's show. Yes you catch up? Yeah, yeah,
<v Speaker 4>it's it's almost impossible. And I thought I was getting
<v Speaker 4>ahead of that because of what I experienced with a
<v Speaker 4>Monster Hunter Wilds, because I had to go to a
<v Speaker 4>best Buy like out of town to pick up a
<v Speaker 4>physical copy. So I pre ordered it as soon as
<v Speaker 4>it went available deluxe. You know, it's got the Requiem
<v Speaker 4>on the cover, big dog steelcase.
<v Speaker 1>I was ready, So why aren't you getting it until
<v Speaker 1>March twenty fifth? You were first one in line and
<v Speaker 1>all this stuff?
<v Speaker 2>What's up?
<v Speaker 3>You know what?
<v Speaker 4>I said the Hunger Games. I was I was chosen
<v Speaker 4>this tribute, you know, for those who come, for those
<v Speaker 4>who come after, and it's you know, I'll fall on
<v Speaker 4>this sword.
<v Speaker 3>I was gonna buy this game all three shads anyway.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, hey, I'm gonna I'll be getting it again,
<v Speaker 1>like if I had to buy, I already got a COVID.
<v Speaker 2>It's like I definitely would have bought it twice for
<v Speaker 2>Switch and PC.
<v Speaker 1>So I'm gonna be playing it on PC today after
<v Speaker 1>I already playing it one and a half times on
<v Speaker 1>Switch to Yeah, you know, before we get into things
<v Speaker 1>and before I introduce the show and all that stuff.
<v Speaker 2>Have you been on Game mess Mornings? I can't remember if.
<v Speaker 4>No, this is my first time I've been on the couch, though.
<v Speaker 1>You've been multiple times. We've hung out a bunch. It's
<v Speaker 1>always been great to have you on there. So for
<v Speaker 1>people that might not know you for Games Mornings, but
<v Speaker 1>why didn't you tell people about your off and stuff
<v Speaker 1>like that, I appreciate that.
<v Speaker 4>So yeah, yeah, yeah, So I'm baron J six seven.
<v Speaker 4>That's uh, you know the handle, but I am the
<v Speaker 4>co owner and what am I the communications director? You
<v Speaker 4>could tell the leader the leader.
<v Speaker 3>Leader of lv one Gaming.
<v Speaker 4>We are a gaming website that focuses on news, reviews,
<v Speaker 4>and everything in between. So you like, one month, our
<v Speaker 4>biggest article might be about gaming shoes, and then the
<v Speaker 4>next one will be about what game Baron hasn't finished.
<v Speaker 4>But yeah, so right now we have two shows running
<v Speaker 4>so Fridays at three pm Pacific Standard time, we have
<v Speaker 4>the lvy one Gaming Podcast. That's where we get That's
<v Speaker 4>where you're gonna get your general news, whatever's the hot
<v Speaker 4>topics for the previous week. And then of course on
<v Speaker 4>we're bi weekly show, we have the backlog Barbarians shout
<v Speaker 4>out to g Style Magazine and Geek Life, Mike Yo,
<v Speaker 4>Nat Gaming, Uh, Julian over at True Nerd. These are
<v Speaker 4>all great people, and we have a show where we
<v Speaker 4>get together in literal really talk about our backlogs.
<v Speaker 3>Like that's it.
<v Speaker 4>We don't do news. We just sit there and talk
<v Speaker 4>about what games were working on, which games we finished.
<v Speaker 4>I finally finished the Witcher three, Yes, shame me. Uh,
<v Speaker 4>that doesn't mean I didn't have it. I had the
<v Speaker 4>Witcher three five different times. Don't ask how, but yes, uh,
<v Speaker 4>and I finally finished it now, don't ask if I
<v Speaker 4>did all the DLC because those are different games in
<v Speaker 4>my book.
<v Speaker 2>But wait, how'd you feel about the Witcher three when
<v Speaker 2>you were done with it?
<v Speaker 4>I it felt really good, and I'm glad I finished
<v Speaker 4>it now because I think I would have been angry
<v Speaker 4>if I would have finished it back when it first launched,
<v Speaker 4>because that's a long window for the way it ended.
<v Speaker 4>It ended like like a TV show, like like like
<v Speaker 4>season two's around the corner, like that's yeah, yeah, that's really.
<v Speaker 3>How it ended.
<v Speaker 4>And I would have I'm it it's more enjoyable because
<v Speaker 4>I know what's on the horizon. Sure, but if I
<v Speaker 4>did not know, and you know, especially with the way
<v Speaker 4>gaming is gone from the when that point to now,
<v Speaker 4>I would have been kind of mad. I could just
<v Speaker 4>being honest, No spoiling an eleven year old game, no,
<v Speaker 4>but but yeah, no, it's knowing where we're going with
<v Speaker 4>the Witcher series.
<v Speaker 3>It was a great ending.
<v Speaker 1>Cool, excellent, uh well, very good LV one gaming. People
<v Speaker 1>are posting links in chat. People should follow that. Go
<v Speaker 1>check out Baron and the Crebit on the show a
<v Speaker 1>handful of times. It's always excellent, so much fun. You
<v Speaker 1>guys got some good sound clips.
<v Speaker 3>You got to come back. Yep.
<v Speaker 1>Oh yeah, absolutely, anytime man, you say the word, I'll
<v Speaker 1>make it happen. As far as all this goes, we
<v Speaker 1>should explain ourselves. Hey, we're giant bomb. It's uh, we're
<v Speaker 1>in internet video game douficis. We're making dumb stuff on
<v Speaker 1>the internet, and then we're talking about video game news
<v Speaker 1>and we want to keep doing all that in the
<v Speaker 1>best way possible.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah. Yeah, there's the there's the three Dead. Yeah, that's amazing.
<v Speaker 2>Mine dissolved. Yeah. I know. So as a big white people,
<v Speaker 2>how to do laundry? I need this?
<v Speaker 4>Okay, So as a big man who it's very hard
<v Speaker 4>to find clothes in my size, you know, wear three
<v Speaker 4>x four X. So whenever when I don't dry my clothes,
<v Speaker 4>I do not dry my clothes.
<v Speaker 3>So I washed all I got old.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah yeah, I wash on cold and I hang dry
<v Speaker 4>or air dry all of my T shirts. My T
<v Speaker 4>shirts are never this shirt. I'm wearing this red Sox shirt. Yes,
<v Speaker 4>done on them baseball season. But this shirt is over
<v Speaker 4>fifteen years old. I used to work at the mall
<v Speaker 4>before I had kids and before I had married. My
<v Speaker 4>oldest is about to be ten years old, and this
<v Speaker 4>is before I was even married, So yeah, like I see.
<v Speaker 2>That's why.
<v Speaker 1>That's why I got like confused, because I definitely have
<v Speaker 1>T shirts that old fort old fart shirt I wear sometimes.
<v Speaker 2>The chat always laughs at.
<v Speaker 1>I got that thrift shopping in high school. So that
<v Speaker 1>is two thousand and one. That's twenty five goddamn years
<v Speaker 1>old when I got it. And I got it from
<v Speaker 1>a thrift store, and I dry that in a dryer
<v Speaker 1>all the time, and it stood up to time, stood
<v Speaker 1>up to all this time, no problem. It feels like
<v Speaker 1>all these new shirts you can't. I think that's what
<v Speaker 1>I'm learning is I got to like recognize that they
<v Speaker 1>have they're using cheaper quality, and I gotta I got
<v Speaker 1>a drying wreck because I knew this was the problem.
<v Speaker 1>It's just nice to get it confirmed and see that
<v Speaker 1>you have the exact same shirt that I have.
<v Speaker 4>And yeah, look the black is still black, you know,
<v Speaker 4>it's not all gray like in this. I got this
<v Speaker 4>when it first dropped, so and believe me, I'll wear
<v Speaker 4>it a lot. Whenever I play horror games, Mike always
<v Speaker 4>looks after me.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, that's that's the way to do it.
<v Speaker 1>What does that mean? I'm oh my god, Jeff is
<v Speaker 1>only five years older than me. You should what she said.
<v Speaker 1>Oh man, I can't believe we're basically the same age.
<v Speaker 1>Am I that much older? Saving anyway, you can check

<v Speaker 1>later with chapters and timestamps on YouTube.
<v Speaker 2>Hello YouTube.
<v Speaker 1>All right, we have a lot to get into, so
<v Speaker 1>let's start the morning mess with that. February twenty twenty
<v Speaker 1>six Pokemon Presents Pokemon Day Recap of announcements.
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna go through what is basically the email from
<v Speaker 2>the Pokemon Company.
<v Speaker 1>There were new games, Pokemon Wins and Pokemon Waves now confirmed.
<v Speaker 1>These are the new openworldish RPGs that they've been doing,
<v Speaker 1>and it looks pretty impressive, relatively speaking, because it's switched
<v Speaker 1>to only and not coming out until twenty twenty seven. Baron,
<v Speaker 1>what do you think about that? Because I was I
<v Speaker 1>was a great Mike was kept telling me that was
<v Speaker 1>gonna be the big holiday game and Sewn then of course,
<v Speaker 1>rightfully pointed out Pokemon Company operates on its own, separate
<v Speaker 1>schedule from Nintendo. They don't care necessarily care about Nintendo's needs.
<v Speaker 1>They do what they need to do, and so they
<v Speaker 1>might be releasing this game when it's done, which is
<v Speaker 1>something very new for Pokemon. I'm getting a little bit
<v Speaker 1>encouraged by what I'm seeing here. Baron, how about you?
<v Speaker 4>You know what I was told, and I'm gonna throw
<v Speaker 4>them under the bus. Ahead of Level one Gaming LV
<v Speaker 4>one Gaming Fame Fame, he said that these Pokemon look
<v Speaker 4>like they're getting ready to get a seasoned tosist from
<v Speaker 4>the Pokemon company.
<v Speaker 1>Oh, they look like they look Is that just like
<v Speaker 1>the first time you see a Pokemon, you're like, I
<v Speaker 1>don't know, it doesn't look right, and then six months
<v Speaker 1>later you never think that again.
<v Speaker 4>I personally, when I've seen it, I think it's just
<v Speaker 4>thirty years of Pokemon, like how many? How at some
<v Speaker 4>point we were gonna hit this wall, you know, when
<v Speaker 4>when you started seeing like wind chimes and ice cream.
<v Speaker 2>Cones and real Pokemon.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, you know, once we once we got to that point,
<v Speaker 4>it's like how much more?
<v Speaker 3>You know?
<v Speaker 4>And I think they I think Pokemon jumped too early
<v Speaker 4>with the missing no, you know, with the back, with
<v Speaker 4>the with the unknowns and the letters, like I think
<v Speaker 4>they they should have saved.
<v Speaker 3>That for when they didn't know what to do.
<v Speaker 2>They probably didn't know what to do back then. We've
<v Speaker 2>already got like five dogs? Can we do it?
<v Speaker 1>Are we still gonna be doing a dog in thirty years?
<v Speaker 1>And I think Pomban is great this is this is
<v Speaker 1>fun stuff. Yeah, I bet that stuff fades away quick.
<v Speaker 1>You get used to it, and then suddenly it's like
<v Speaker 1>especially once you pick one and you play a whole
<v Speaker 1>game with them, it's like, oh, yeah, I built up
<v Speaker 1>this relationship and now this also just feels like authentic
<v Speaker 1>Pokemon to me as well. Those three starters are Brout,
<v Speaker 1>a grass type bird owl Pokemon.
<v Speaker 2>Uh.
<v Speaker 1>And then there's palm Bond, which is a Pomeranian fire
<v Speaker 1>fire dog Pokemon, and then Gekua, which is that's water
<v Speaker 1>lizard uh, like aqua but gecko and Yeah, I thought
<v Speaker 1>all of them are pretty solid, and I saw in
<v Speaker 1>chat there was a lot of people like already selecting theirs,
<v Speaker 1>and there was good representation across the board. Although I
<v Speaker 1>think palm Bond seems like an early favorite for a lot.
<v Speaker 1>I think I'm going with Brout. I like that bird.
<v Speaker 4>I'm going Gekua because the name just sounds cool, uh.
<v Speaker 4>And maybe it's just the way you pronounced it. I
<v Speaker 4>don't know if that's all I pronounced, because I didn't
<v Speaker 4>get to see hear the name. But you know, maybe
<v Speaker 4>maybe we might get a hint of voice acting in
<v Speaker 4>wins and Waves like you know.
<v Speaker 2>Do you really believe that?
<v Speaker 3>No, I don't, I don't. Could you imagine? Could you imagine, like.
<v Speaker 4>I think the first voice acting we're gonna get in
<v Speaker 4>a Pokemon game, Uh is gonna like a psychic type
<v Speaker 4>Pokemon is gonna talk and it's gonna blow.
<v Speaker 2>Out and he's just like a psychomantasis voice. Yes, yeah, I.
<v Speaker 1>Can sell here. You like Castlevania. What are you talking about?
<v Speaker 1>You're just a Pokemon Why are you saying these things?
<v Speaker 4>Three hundred hours in Mario Kart?
<v Speaker 1>All right, Pokemon Champions, This is coming in April twenty
<v Speaker 1>twenty six.
<v Speaker 2>It is Sean helped me.
<v Speaker 1>This is the the battling game, the one that's like
<v Speaker 1>the Battle mode, but just like a standalone version of that, right,
<v Speaker 1>and it's coming to mobile eventually.
<v Speaker 5>So basically the competitive side of Pokemon that people play
<v Speaker 5>within the games right now and everything. You know, they
<v Speaker 5>take the multiplayer mode, they took it very seriously. It's
<v Speaker 5>kind of like Smash. Eventually, competitive modes were added to
<v Speaker 5>the game. That's getting separated out into its own thing,
<v Speaker 5>its own app. It's being done by Ilka, you know,
<v Speaker 5>who has supported the Pokemon Company in game free for
<v Speaker 5>a while now, and so hopefully this will take some
<v Speaker 5>of the stress off of game freaks out they can
<v Speaker 5>do things like focus on making an actual decent modern
<v Speaker 5>single player game, right.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, man, And then that's the hope With Wind, Winds
<v Speaker 2>and Waves.
<v Speaker 1>We only kind of touched on that a little bit,
<v Speaker 1>but I mean, there really isn't much to know at
<v Speaker 1>this point.
<v Speaker 2>It's like it.
<v Speaker 1>Looks better for sure, it's coming to switch to exclusively,
<v Speaker 1>so there's a lot a lot of reasons to be excited.
<v Speaker 1>And then when it comes to stuff like Champions, there's
<v Speaker 1>gonna be a lot of stuff in the meantime for
<v Speaker 1>people to play, including Pokemon Pacopia, which is out next week,
<v Speaker 1>cozy multiplayer adventure game made by the people that did
<v Speaker 1>Dragon Quest Builders. It's looking very similar to that, and
<v Speaker 1>that's parentheses positive. And then it has some Viva Pinata elements,
<v Speaker 1>because that's how you've got to attract Pokemon to your
<v Speaker 1>to your town, your village, your farm, whatever it is. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I'm like this last look at it, it's like, Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>this looks really cute and it looks very like juvenile
<v Speaker 1>and I think also in a pretty good way where
<v Speaker 1>it's like, oh, they are going for a younger audience
<v Speaker 1>with the visuals, but I bet the game is going
<v Speaker 1>to be pretty deep and complex, especially with them promising
<v Speaker 1>always online share.
<v Speaker 2>Servers for worlds.
<v Speaker 1>Like oh wow, that's wasn't expecting them to kind of
<v Speaker 1>think about this game in that way, and here they are.
<v Speaker 1>I'm probably gonna jump in there with some friends and
<v Speaker 1>try to spend some time there.
<v Speaker 2>What do you think about Pacopia?
<v Speaker 4>Do you think? Okay, I'm gonna tell you. I wonder
<v Speaker 4>if is this gonna be the turning point for Pokemon
<v Speaker 4>that because I think this is gonna even though Pokemon
<v Speaker 4>has already reached one of the widest audiences ever, especially.
<v Speaker 1>With it's spinoffs, always feel like it's like just for
<v Speaker 1>like a subset of the freaks, right.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, But the problem, not the problem, but the positive
<v Speaker 4>of this is the core of the game is something
<v Speaker 4>that a majority of people already love.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, it's like a good spinoff in a court, like
<v Speaker 1>there could be like another tier over here on the
<v Speaker 1>side for them to like work on for a long
<v Speaker 1>period of time, Like they've already kind of done this
<v Speaker 1>with Za with Legends, Like that's like, oh, this is
<v Speaker 1>another a pathway for Pokemon to take and we can
<v Speaker 1>kind of do these side by side, and then we
<v Speaker 1>have a bunch of spinoffs down here. It always felt like,
<v Speaker 1>why are there more spinoffs that are like just shooting
<v Speaker 1>up and being just as popular as some of these
<v Speaker 1>other games, you know, Like that was the logic I
<v Speaker 1>had for I counterpicked Vampire Crawlers in Fantasy Critic, and
<v Speaker 1>it's like, they already made that one really good game.
<v Speaker 1>What are the chances that this other one's going to
<v Speaker 1>be amazing? And now, of course it's going to be.
<v Speaker 1>It's like, oh, indie developers do this all the time.
<v Speaker 1>I think it's now we could expect Pokemon. If this
<v Speaker 1>game hits pretty hard, the Pokemon Company to be like, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>we are going to be an investing in that long
<v Speaker 1>term because it's just if it feels like a good
<v Speaker 1>fit for that the kinds of people who like Pokeon
<v Speaker 1>and those kinds of people who like these kinds of games.
<v Speaker 4>I think I think it's going to do like Marvel
<v Speaker 4>Rival style boom. I really believe so, because you're hitting
<v Speaker 4>what the you have, all the namesakes you have, the
<v Speaker 4>lore is already there, the world's already established. Now you're
<v Speaker 4>just throwing in mechanics from games that are already successful,
<v Speaker 4>and it I think it's we're going to see that
<v Speaker 4>type of boom.
<v Speaker 2>Yep.
<v Speaker 1>There are some updates and releases as well for other
<v Speaker 1>games that Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green versions. They
<v Speaker 1>you know, just go reminded people that's out now you
<v Speaker 1>can go get those. The Legends Za Mega Dimension got
<v Speaker 1>re revealed of this one. Even the people who are
<v Speaker 1>in the no seem confused. A new mystery gift unlocks
<v Speaker 1>a special battle to obtain Mega Gar chompite Z for
<v Speaker 1>a new form in Mega Man for Mega Gar chomps
<v Speaker 1>Z whatever. I don't even know what I'm reading anymore,
<v Speaker 1>but people were just like, wasn't this already out? I
<v Speaker 1>guess it's like a small little part of that DLC.
<v Speaker 1>And then they had updates for Pokemon Go, the trading
<v Speaker 1>card game, Pocket Pokemon Sleepy Night Poke, Pokemon Masters Ex,
<v Speaker 1>and Pokemon Cafe Remix as they always do in these
<v Speaker 1>Pokemon Day streams. And then there was events and merch
<v Speaker 1>They are going to continue that advertising campaign they've been
<v Speaker 1>doing that started at the Super Bowl and then was
<v Speaker 1>a huge part of the Olympics, the Who's Your Favorite
<v Speaker 1>where they keep bringing celebrities on to talk about their
<v Speaker 1>favorite Pokemon. They are spending money on marketing for Pokemon
<v Speaker 1>this year. And then there's the XP event in Pokemon
<v Speaker 1>World Championships, So a lot of in person events. Uh,
<v Speaker 1>those are happening in SF. We're gonna's gonna probably go
<v Speaker 1>to that, Sean. You're thinking about going to one of
<v Speaker 1>these things, right, maybe the Championships It.
<v Speaker 5>Would be that one. Yeah, because Pokemon XP is happening
<v Speaker 5>the same weekend as Worlds, and so like Worlds has
<v Speaker 5>become so big that's kind of like a convention of
<v Speaker 5>itself and Pokemon XP they're kind of separating out a
<v Speaker 5>little bit of that so that can be its own
<v Speaker 5>standalone event that fans can kind of show up at,
<v Speaker 5>hang out and not necessarily worry about the competition as much. So, yeah,
<v Speaker 5>if I hang out with Jan for Worlds this year,
<v Speaker 5>that was kind of the plan. Then I would be
<v Speaker 5>going to XP as well.
<v Speaker 3>Grab some pins please, oh you guys of course.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, last two things here in Sean, Why I have
<v Speaker 1>you talking? Were you able to suss out exactly what
<v Speaker 1>was going on with that expansion for the trading card game?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah?
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, yeah, I kind of I kind of forgot about
<v Speaker 5>this pokea Beach shut Outs. John does incredible work over
<v Speaker 5>there with like Pokemon TC journalism. He suused out a
<v Speaker 5>while back from a trademark that, yeah, we are getting
<v Speaker 5>a thirtieth Anversary set this year, like a celebration set.
<v Speaker 5>They always do this for anniversaries, where they invoke old
<v Speaker 5>cards or reprint old cards or something like that. That
<v Speaker 5>seems to be what they're doing here. They're they're gonna
<v Speaker 5>reprint them old favorites. They did this not too long
<v Speaker 5>ago for the twenty fifth Anversary I believe, but they're
<v Speaker 5>doing that again, bringing back some clastic cards as well
<v Speaker 5>as introducing some new cards, and that'll be all in one,
<v Speaker 5>like one celebration set that, as Jam pointed out, you know,
<v Speaker 5>the weirdos will like try to be each other death
<v Speaker 5>in costco for meanwhile, the rest of us would just
<v Speaker 5>like buy them piecemeal from our local cards up pikachuw.
<v Speaker 1>Oh yeah, yeah, he's super cute. We love our fat Pikachu's.
<v Speaker 1>And then finally, of course, they had a stupidly cool
<v Speaker 1>and probably expensive piece of merch, the Pokemon Red and
<v Speaker 1>Pokemon Blue game Music.
<v Speaker 2>Collection colon game Boy juke box.
<v Speaker 1>It is a little game Boy looking music player in
<v Speaker 1>which you put in what are effectively hit clips versions
<v Speaker 1>of the Pokemon soundtracks, and then you put in this gameboard.
<v Speaker 1>It starts to play in and it's like what man, okay,
<v Speaker 1>of course Nintendo monetizing hit clips in twenty twenty six,
<v Speaker 1>I said, Nintendo, I know it's the Pokemon company, but
<v Speaker 1>they would do the same thing.
<v Speaker 2>I want the stumb thing.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, oh yeah, I absolutely want it. I want the
<v Speaker 4>game Boy legos. I want all of these things. They
<v Speaker 4>as you can see, I have no room and know
<v Speaker 4>where to put it. So I gotta negotiate with my
<v Speaker 4>loved one to see if she can let me mount
<v Speaker 4>it up in its glory in the main.
<v Speaker 2>Start taking over other rooms in the house.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah. Yeah, it's it's time to move.
<v Speaker 1>You need room to breathe exactly. Yeah, let's see. I
<v Speaker 1>thought it was a pretty good stream Pokemon days it
<v Speaker 1>You know, it is what we always expected to be
<v Speaker 1>because they, as Sean was saying as we were getting
<v Speaker 1>ready to go into the stream, they operate on obvious patterns.
<v Speaker 2>They do the same thing for these things. They have
<v Speaker 2>a blueprint they followed. They did that.
<v Speaker 1>Here there was just I think the surprise that Pokemon
<v Speaker 1>Wins in Waves is not coming out until twenty twenty seven.
<v Speaker 1>What do you think that means for the switch to
<v Speaker 1>this year?
<v Speaker 4>Barn Like every other game company in the world right now,
<v Speaker 4>I think everybody's fearing Godzilla, that is Grand Theft Auto six,
<v Speaker 4>Like I really think that's all that is, and I honestly,
<v Speaker 4>I really think that's all it is. Like everybody's just
<v Speaker 4>trying to maneuver past that. And I feel like there's
<v Speaker 4>like three or four companies, and the Pokemon Company would
<v Speaker 4>be one to know the official release date.
<v Speaker 1>I also think talking about companies, just like they operate
<v Speaker 1>in such different circles, they might I think there might
<v Speaker 1>be something with Sean was saying about like they just
<v Speaker 1>want to like get the game right because they have
<v Speaker 1>operated Those patterns weren't just like for marketing. Those patterns
<v Speaker 1>were for how they released games like they would forever.
<v Speaker 2>It was Everyone's like.
<v Speaker 1>Oh, yeah, we'll just get one this year because we'll
<v Speaker 1>get a new gen this year because it's been three
<v Speaker 1>years and they kind of recently have just been waiting
<v Speaker 1>three years and then we get a new gen and
<v Speaker 1>uh and this they've broken that now it's already been
<v Speaker 1>longer than that, and now it's going to be even
<v Speaker 1>longer than what was expected. And it's like, I think they,
<v Speaker 1>now that they've kind of given themselves this extra time,
<v Speaker 1>they're taking the extra time, like, why don't we see
<v Speaker 1>kind of how far we could push it, especially since
<v Speaker 1>we did just have a pretty like a very successful
<v Speaker 1>legend Za and what could turn out to be a
<v Speaker 1>very successful Pacopeia. So yeah, I think they're trying to
<v Speaker 1>like re establish new norms for how they push out
<v Speaker 1>their games.
<v Speaker 2>And then the you know, it probably.
<v Speaker 1>Doesn't hurt that they can avoid the mailstream that will
<v Speaker 1>be this holiday. Yeah, although you know that game is
<v Speaker 1>not going to be on Switch to Grand Theft Auto six,
<v Speaker 1>so it's like a kind of kind of a very
<v Speaker 1>different thing for people considering how to release games.
<v Speaker 2>On that platform.
<v Speaker 1>All right, let's do this next one, the story behind
<v Speaker 1>the failure of High Guard. This is from Jason Schreyer
<v Speaker 1>at Bloomberg. Yeah, we were kind of waiting for him
<v Speaker 1>to drop this story. Seemed like early on like he
<v Speaker 1>was talking to people there. It is what a lot
<v Speaker 1>of the conversations have kind of nailed this so far.
<v Speaker 1>According to the reporting, he's kind of confirming what we've
<v Speaker 1>known for the most part, but it is nice to
<v Speaker 1>kind of see it all just laid out. Wildlite Entertainment,
<v Speaker 1>founded in twenty twenty one by former Apex Legends developers,
<v Speaker 1>has nearly completely folded shortly after the launch of its
<v Speaker 1>first game, the multiplayer shooter High Guard. The studio was
<v Speaker 1>initially created with a profit share model and funded to
<v Speaker 1>some extent by Tencent Developed. Development pivoted from a survival
<v Speaker 1>focused shooter for High Guard to the raid shooter format
<v Speaker 1>in early twenty twenty four. Despite positive internal and external testing,
<v Speaker 1>High Guard was complex and lacked necessary voice chat for
<v Speaker 1>an optimal experience. Leadership opted against an open beta direct
<v Speaker 1>so they could replicate the surprise launch of a launch
<v Speaker 1>of Apex Legends, resulting in no community buzz. When the
<v Speaker 1>game was announced in December and launched in late January,
<v Speaker 1>High Guards saw high initial concurrent players a high initial
<v Speaker 1>concurrent player count upon it's free to play launch on
<v Speaker 1>January twenty sixth, but suffered from a catastrophic ninety percent
<v Speaker 1>player retention loss. It's more than that now, well, I
<v Speaker 1>guess that was within one week. Critics criticized the game
<v Speaker 1>for confusing mechanics in overly large maps. And this report
<v Speaker 1>also says like.
<v Speaker 2>Hey, they.
<v Speaker 1>Just kind of didn't test this thing in any real
<v Speaker 1>world setting at all, Like they didn't want to do
<v Speaker 1>public testing because they didn't want to ruin the Apex
<v Speaker 1>Legend style launch, which people are confused about why they
<v Speaker 1>wanted in the first place, because it's like people at
<v Speaker 1>EA knew that they did that Apex Legend style launch
<v Speaker 1>because they were kind of forced into it. They didn't
<v Speaker 1>want to have months of drawing out conversation about not
<v Speaker 1>doing another Titan fallse They just wanted to drop Apex
<v Speaker 1>Legends on people. But because this test for High Guard
<v Speaker 1>Baron was internal, they had kind of had things in
<v Speaker 1>the best case scenario developer there to answer questions, voice
<v Speaker 1>check forced on for every match, so players were communicating
<v Speaker 1>perfectly as opposed to how it works in the real
<v Speaker 1>world where often you're in there with other people who
<v Speaker 1>do not have microphones. Once it got into the real world,
<v Speaker 1>those problems were much bigger than this team were anticipating,
<v Speaker 1>and it caused this game the game to kind of
<v Speaker 1>skid to a halt in that first week, and then
<v Speaker 1>in that first week, the game did not hit its
<v Speaker 1>initial retention numbers as laid out in the contract with Tencent,
<v Speaker 1>so Intenseent was going to come through with more money,
<v Speaker 1>as like, Okay, the game is launched, let's go to
<v Speaker 1>the next step. And the team's like, oh and we
<v Speaker 1>have months and months of funding and runway here to
<v Speaker 1>iterate on the game that went that evaporated in an instant,
<v Speaker 1>went away, and the studio has.
<v Speaker 2>Effectively all but folded.
<v Speaker 1>So anything new here to you, any like extra color
<v Speaker 1>to like explain what like the story?
<v Speaker 2>What do you think?
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, them choosing to try to do a surprise, like
<v Speaker 4>I like them debating back and forth and internally like
<v Speaker 4>come on, you you live in a different time now,
<v Speaker 4>Like you know, everybody wants to lead with you know,
<v Speaker 4>at least on social media when we all know perception
<v Speaker 4>is reality, right, the negativity, Like you know, everybody wants
<v Speaker 4>to bash on something and uh you you gotta put
<v Speaker 4>stuff in people's hands.
<v Speaker 3>Now, give people a chance.
<v Speaker 4>Let's especially a free to play clearly wouldn't hurt you.
<v Speaker 4>Let people try the game, and then seeing the tencent
<v Speaker 4>thing and them pulling the money, it just it's it's
<v Speaker 4>spooky to have a game that's clearly looking to thrive
<v Speaker 4>off of longevity, have that type of like quarterly deal
<v Speaker 4>and then you know, let's surprise drop. You think that
<v Speaker 4>would have meant like, let's have a great release, let's
<v Speaker 4>have a you know, it was like they were working
<v Speaker 4>against themselves.
<v Speaker 2>Yep, yep. Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>I think that they didn't realize it, and then it
<v Speaker 1>only became obvious in that first week that they made
<v Speaker 1>some choices that weren't going to benefit them in this
<v Speaker 1>very different market. As you pointed out, things have changed
<v Speaker 1>since Apex Legends is launched, and they really they just
<v Speaker 1>absolutely have like that they launched in a world where
<v Speaker 1>we were kind of like, could there be another battle Royale, Like,
<v Speaker 1>obviously there's going to be more premium price Call of
<v Speaker 1>Duties in Battlefield, and there's probably gonna be some other
<v Speaker 1>others in that space, and it's like no, Fortnite kind
<v Speaker 1>of took over, and then really they're just is Call
<v Speaker 1>of Duty and then the occasional.
<v Speaker 2>Battlefield that does pretty well or.
<v Speaker 1>Extremely well as this last one did, and it's like, okay,
<v Speaker 1>so where do these other games try to fit into
<v Speaker 1>this space? And there's no obvious answer, and High Guard
<v Speaker 1>ran right.
<v Speaker 2>Into that wall all right, So I mean that kind
<v Speaker 2>of wraps it up for High Guard.
<v Speaker 1>I think that there's probably not much more that it's
<v Speaker 1>going to come out of that game. I would expect
<v Speaker 1>them to sunset it here pretty quickly. It doesn't feel
<v Speaker 1>like they're going to be able to rescue it, but
<v Speaker 1>who knows. We'll see if they do. We will talk
<v Speaker 1>about it. In the meantime, we got to take a
<v Speaker 1>break for some ad messages. We got plenty of more
<v Speaker 1>headlines to get into after that, So if you want
<v Speaker 1>to skip out on these, you go to GiantBomb dot com,
<v Speaker 1>slash join, become a premium member, get the ad fre
<v Speaker 1>version of the audio and video show there. In the meantime,
<v Speaker 1>we will be right back. It's Game mess Mornings, Baron Jones,
<v Speaker 1>Jeff Grubb.
<v Speaker 2>Let's do this.
<v Speaker 1>Next story here is Sony is backing away from their
<v Speaker 1>exclusive console stuff on PC. This is from Jonas Mackie,
<v Speaker 1>a game reactor. For years, we have been moving toward
<v Speaker 1>more multiplayer and greater openness between formats, with almost everything
<v Speaker 1>coming to PC and sometimes even competing platforms, but perhaps
<v Speaker 1>the pendulum is swinging back a little. Over the weekend,
<v Speaker 1>we reported that that new Xbox boss Asha Sharma responded
<v Speaker 1>hear you to fans who asked about exclusives coming back
<v Speaker 1>to Xbox and Now. Journalist Jason Schreier says in the
<v Speaker 1>Triple Click podcast that while he believes Sony's multiplayer titles
<v Speaker 1>will be released across platforms in the future, single player
<v Speaker 1>titles may not. He believes that Sony is currently quote
<v Speaker 1>backing away from putting their exclusive console stuff like traditional
<v Speaker 1>single player stuff on PC. Therefore, he argues PC gamers
<v Speaker 1>should not take it for granted that they will get
<v Speaker 1>to play Marvel's Wolverine, and he called that one out specifically.
<v Speaker 1>All right, Baron, I agree with the assessment here by
<v Speaker 1>Jonas Mackie in the story that it feels a little
<v Speaker 1>bit just like the pendulum swinging back. It's still going
<v Speaker 1>to be a pendulum. The pendulum is an average of behaviors.
<v Speaker 1>I think there will be some weightedness where it's like, Okay,
<v Speaker 1>maybe exclusives are a little bit more back because of
<v Speaker 1>this Wolverine game. Super Important isn't going to ever come
<v Speaker 1>to PC for whatever reason. I still think some games will.
<v Speaker 1>They just got through announcing death Stranding too for the PC.
<v Speaker 2>Very quickly.
<v Speaker 1>Now that's a slightly different circumstance. It's a Kojima joint.
<v Speaker 1>He has a lot of ownership over that, if not
<v Speaker 1>all ownership. I know that early on Sony did own it.
<v Speaker 1>I can't remember if they still have some ownership over
<v Speaker 1>that brand, but either way, it is a different situation.
<v Speaker 1>That's not one of their internal studios. Still though, they
<v Speaker 1>are doing that very quickly, and they agreed to that.
<v Speaker 1>Now maybe things have changed since they made that initial
<v Speaker 1>agreement for that game. Seems like they probably have at
<v Speaker 1>the very least. Here's what I could say, Baron, based
<v Speaker 1>on looking into this myself. This is a conversation they
<v Speaker 1>have all the time still inside of Sony, and the
<v Speaker 1>conversation is kind of back to a point where it's like, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>we probably should continue to rethink some things where it's going,
<v Speaker 1>like where the decision falls. I don't know if it's
<v Speaker 1>that simple, because I think it's going to be a
<v Speaker 1>case by case basis.
<v Speaker 2>It's kind of what I'm thinking.
<v Speaker 1>But there's certainly smoke and I bet there's fire to
<v Speaker 1>this conversation.
<v Speaker 2>What do you think?
<v Speaker 3>So?
<v Speaker 2>I think just it.
<v Speaker 4>People say they don't like exclusives, but Let's be honest.
<v Speaker 4>Exclusives will make you go and pick.
<v Speaker 3>Up a console.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, it's special, it is it simply is that or
<v Speaker 4>if it's a big enough ip, are a big enough story,
<v Speaker 4>a big enough game, you want to experience it, and
<v Speaker 4>you will go in if you if you can, you
<v Speaker 4>will go out and pick up this this thing. And
<v Speaker 4>I could see could you imagine if Wolverine was exclusive
<v Speaker 4>to only the console Wolverine is a big enough ip,
<v Speaker 4>like people would go out and buy a console. I
<v Speaker 4>could hear kids, now you know, like I want Wolverine.
<v Speaker 2>I want Wolverine.
<v Speaker 4>You know, come on, look, spider Man did it like
<v Speaker 4>it's it's.
<v Speaker 2>Hey.
<v Speaker 4>If they want to sell consoles, which I always believe
<v Speaker 4>PlayStation and Sony always has, they've always wanted to move consoles.
<v Speaker 4>They want you to buy their their box, this is
<v Speaker 4>the best way to do it.
<v Speaker 1>And honestly, we might be in like the kind of
<v Speaker 1>a perfect storm situation right in this moment where it
<v Speaker 1>might make sense for Sony to emphasize that again because
<v Speaker 1>Xbox might be changing things up, Xbox might be launching
<v Speaker 1>a new console here in the next year and a half,
<v Speaker 1>two years or something like that, and they want to
<v Speaker 1>be prepared for people maybe making a whatever reason to
<v Speaker 1>choose that if you can right now say hey, this
<v Speaker 1>is the only place you're ever going to be able
<v Speaker 1>to play Wolverine, so buy our system for that, and
<v Speaker 1>then you'll be ready for Grand Theft Auto six. And
<v Speaker 1>this is one of only two places you can play
<v Speaker 1>that game for the at least the first year probably,
<v Speaker 1>and the other one is Xbox, And like, why would
<v Speaker 1>you buy an Xbox when you just get Wolverine and PlayStation?
<v Speaker 1>And then they really set themselves up for like we
<v Speaker 1>all know, like I mean, everyone watching the show knows.
<v Speaker 1>We talk about it all the time, We talked about
<v Speaker 1>it for years. We kind of been deemphasizing it because
<v Speaker 1>things have changed. But these companies make a lot of
<v Speaker 1>money from selling micro transactions and selling other people's games
<v Speaker 1>and content. Sony's half of their revenue from PlayStation apparently
<v Speaker 1>comes from doing that. So why wouldn't they want to
<v Speaker 1>be bullstam that? And the only answer we had to
<v Speaker 1>that question Baron was well, they're not doing it anymore.
<v Speaker 1>They're putting the games on PlayStation and maybe even more
<v Speaker 1>games on Switch. They put a couple of games on Switch,
<v Speaker 1>Lego Horizons. Now, maybe those games didn't perform very well
<v Speaker 1>and that kind of reframed this conversation internally, and I
<v Speaker 1>bet that was definitely part of it as well. It
<v Speaker 1>just seems like the more they invest in making PlayStation
<v Speaker 1>feel important, the more they reap that reward, as opposed
<v Speaker 1>to just be like, oh, let's you know, games are
<v Speaker 1>going to feel special somewhat, but they'll be on PC
<v Speaker 1>in like six months that maybe you know, they've made
<v Speaker 1>money by putting those games on PC, But did they
<v Speaker 1>make enough to sort of offset the excitement that they
<v Speaker 1>might have diminished on PlayStation?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah? What do you think?
<v Speaker 4>And no, I absolutely I don't think it was worth
<v Speaker 4>it in the sense of, yeah, you have more people
<v Speaker 4>playing your game, like that's obviously that's awesome, right, But no,
<v Speaker 4>but we would rather take half of that or a
<v Speaker 4>quarter of those people and have them plan on our console,
<v Speaker 4>because then after you're done with that game, we're gonna
<v Speaker 4>update our library and show you that, hey, we have
<v Speaker 4>this game that's in our Classic pack and you if
<v Speaker 4>you get our PlayStation plus, you could get this and it,
<v Speaker 4>like you said, lean into the micro transactions and further, look,
<v Speaker 4>we want you here like That's that's really what it is.
<v Speaker 4>All these companies they want you here, and they've always
<v Speaker 4>had one of the best ways to get you to
<v Speaker 4>come to the PlayStation and be home with the US,
<v Speaker 4>and it was their exclusives. Like I mean, look how
<v Speaker 4>they ran Last of Us, uh, the Last of Us dry, Like,
<v Speaker 4>you don't do that for no reason like that, That's
<v Speaker 4>that's not an accident.
<v Speaker 2>Clearly it worked.
<v Speaker 4>So why wouldn't you want to do that with Marvel? Right, yes?
<v Speaker 4>Or second step further Disney, you want to do that?
<v Speaker 4>I remember, and I go back to Hogwarts Legacy, and
<v Speaker 4>I bring this up. A lot A lot of people
<v Speaker 4>thought Hogwarts Legacy was an exclusive to PlayStation, Like I
<v Speaker 4>remember being in game stops and Best Buys, and once again,
<v Speaker 4>I gotta say this, I've never seen any only consoles
<v Speaker 4>I've seen purchased in person have been PlayStations, you know
<v Speaker 4>with the flimsy box. You see people and they always
<v Speaker 4>tell them make sure to hold the bottom and then
<v Speaker 4>walk out. And I remember people picking up PlayStations for
<v Speaker 4>Hogwarts Legacy, you know, right, yeah, how Slytherin, you know,
<v Speaker 4>we bleed green here in this home and it's us.
<v Speaker 4>It's a real I've seen people buy consoles for one game.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, I mean I think that's more common than than
<v Speaker 1>I certainly realized.
<v Speaker 2>For sure. I'll say that. It's like, I'm not.
<v Speaker 1>Too worried about this because I don't think this is
<v Speaker 1>some like permanent thing. I think this is them sort
<v Speaker 1>of just reassessing real quick, and it will be a
<v Speaker 1>small gap.
<v Speaker 2>And I do think Wolverraine will be on PC eventually.
<v Speaker 1>It just might be the more traditional two or three
<v Speaker 1>years as opposed to like what it seemed like it
<v Speaker 1>was gonna be, which is like six months or shorter.
<v Speaker 2>Everything's gonna be six months or shorter.
<v Speaker 1>They're working on a PlayStation launcher, launcher for PC, and
<v Speaker 1>they're gonna have PC crossby and all this stuff, all
<v Speaker 1>these rumors of things that they were working on, which
<v Speaker 1>they certainly were, and it's like, okay, maybe they just
<v Speaker 1>reassess that and they're kind of pausing.
<v Speaker 2>But they've done that work. They know what it looks like.
<v Speaker 1>And I bet as things oscillate and the pendulum swings,
<v Speaker 1>we're gonna go back in the other direction again very quickly.
<v Speaker 2>Oh, I don't think it's much longer.
<v Speaker 1>After Grand Theft Auto six comes out that things sort
<v Speaker 1>of get reassessed. The the hard hardware situation sort of
<v Speaker 1>iron and irons itself out slowly over the next several years,
<v Speaker 1>people reassessing these companies go, wait, why do we why
<v Speaker 1>are we stopping putting stuff on PC?
<v Speaker 2>Uh.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, that's my belief. That's why I'm not too worried
<v Speaker 1>about this. As someone who certainly plays most of my
<v Speaker 1>games on PC. At this point, I was loving this trend.
<v Speaker 1>This was a very this was the best case scenario.
<v Speaker 1>But I certainly see why Sony is making this decision
<v Speaker 1>if they are, and I just don't think it's going
<v Speaker 1>to be that draconian of a thing where it's like
<v Speaker 1>we are at locking this all down. The walled garden
<v Speaker 1>is back one hundred percent. It's just not that's not
<v Speaker 1>the genie.
<v Speaker 4>The genie is out of the lamp, like you know,
<v Speaker 4>we're not going like, yeah.
<v Speaker 1>All right, let's keep going here. Sony confirms a major
<v Speaker 1>PS five Pro upgrade is rolling out today with Resident
<v Speaker 1>Evil Requiem.
<v Speaker 2>This is from Andy Robinson at VGC.
<v Speaker 1>A major update is rolling out for PlayStation five Pro
<v Speaker 1>today in the form of improved pisser upscaling tech. Sony
<v Speaker 1>is confirmed, which debuts in Resident Evil Requiem That's pretty exciting.
<v Speaker 1>Pisser is Sony's answer to an invidious DLSS, a machine
<v Speaker 1>learning based upscaler that improves game resolution without impacting performance.
<v Speaker 2>Announced the last year.
<v Speaker 1>The improved Pisser is based on AMD's Fizzer for and
<v Speaker 1>arrives as part of Sony and AMD's Project Amethyst initiative
<v Speaker 1>where they are working together. Basically, they kind of list
<v Speaker 1>some stuff that it does better at It's better because
<v Speaker 1>it's the new transformer technology model as opposed to the
<v Speaker 1>old convolational neural network. Basically, they had an old version
<v Speaker 1>of these upscaling texts that all these things used previously,
<v Speaker 1>and then all the other ones DLSS a long time ago,
<v Speaker 1>FSR relatively a long time ago, switched to this new
<v Speaker 1>way of doing things. Pisser was still on the old way.
<v Speaker 1>Now it's on the new way. They did it with
<v Speaker 1>the help of AMD. So just necessarily it's going to
<v Speaker 1>be better, excuse me, for small details like hares and
<v Speaker 1>like big wide angle scenes where you see a lot
<v Speaker 1>of distance all at one time, it'll be better at
<v Speaker 1>handling that. It'll be better at handling sort of temporal data.
<v Speaker 1>So as things move through a space in three D
<v Speaker 1>space time, it's better at like understanding that movement because
<v Speaker 1>it can use data from a timeline. So yeah, overall,
<v Speaker 1>like this is pretty cool news. It's surprising that we
<v Speaker 1>are kind of really getting what feels like a pretty
<v Speaker 1>major update for a console this far in. It's something
<v Speaker 1>I always thought like, oh, maybe that'll happen with the
<v Speaker 1>Xbox One. Microsoft has all this machine learning stuff, maybe
<v Speaker 1>they'll find a way to make these games look better
<v Speaker 1>and kind of give it a faux Xbox Pro upgrade.
<v Speaker 1>Halfway through, this certainly feels that way. Now, this is
<v Speaker 1>just for the PS five Pro. This stuff is not
<v Speaker 1>on the standard PS five, but either way, people paid
<v Speaker 1>a lot of money for the Pro getting more of
<v Speaker 1>their money's worth out of it, right, Yeah, And.
<v Speaker 4>You know what, because I'm the average gamers average gamer,
<v Speaker 4>So when you're speaking all the acronyms, and I was.
<v Speaker 2>Like, yeah, yeah, yeah.
<v Speaker 4>But no, and I'm glad you broke it down. So hey,
<v Speaker 4>if it's gonna make my game look prettier and it's not,
<v Speaker 4>and then you're gonna give me that real value that
<v Speaker 4>I paid for Because I remember when the PS four
<v Speaker 4>pro PS four When the PS five Pro launched, a
<v Speaker 4>lot of folks were complaining on social media about not
<v Speaker 4>feeling the difference. Ye see, yeah same, I don't have one,
<v Speaker 4>but uh, getting that value you know, personally, I think
<v Speaker 4>that kind of extends the life of this bad boy, like,
<v Speaker 4>you know, especially with the way everything's going with the
<v Speaker 4>chips and markets and development and one third of the
<v Speaker 4>industry backing out from the public. Like, you know, stuff
<v Speaker 4>like this is a positive and hopefully, like you said,
<v Speaker 4>it does go across. Uh grow Xbox kind of picks
<v Speaker 4>that up and makes a shift as well, because I mean, hey,
<v Speaker 4>who knows when we're gonna get the next consoles are
<v Speaker 4>if r if they'll even be a true leap, because well,
<v Speaker 4>they have the capacity to make that.
<v Speaker 2>Leap, you know, at a reasonable price.
<v Speaker 1>Right It's like it would be a leap if they
<v Speaker 1>were willing to make one that costs thirteen hundred dollars
<v Speaker 1>anything less than a thousand, Like, what can they really
<v Speaker 1>get away with.
<v Speaker 2>It's gonna be tough.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I think you're right that this helps them position
<v Speaker 1>the consoles to last longer, which is something they definitely want.
<v Speaker 1>Right now, this will be the only game for now
<v Speaker 1>that supports this. Fifty games support the standard PISSER, which
<v Speaker 1>is PlayStation Spectral super Resolution. Just made up a made
<v Speaker 1>up term. Everybody doesn't It doesn't mean anything. Yeah, exactly
<v Speaker 1>fifty games support that. Many of those will get upgraded
<v Speaker 1>to this new version of pisser in starting in March.
<v Speaker 2>I believe.
<v Speaker 1>So, yeah, it's not gonna be immediate other outside of
<v Speaker 1>Resident Evil Requien, but hey, Resident Evil Wrequien, we'll talk
<v Speaker 1>about it at the end of the show.
<v Speaker 2>Here in a second. That's an event game.
<v Speaker 1>That is a game people are showing up for, you know,
<v Speaker 1>kind of on that one tier below Grand Theft Auto.
<v Speaker 1>And it's like, okay, the people are gonna want it
<v Speaker 1>in this game. It's good that you launched it with
<v Speaker 1>this one, right, yep?
<v Speaker 2>I agree? What all right?
<v Speaker 1>Speaking of hardware, Nvidia promises very tight graphics cards supply
<v Speaker 1>won't improve anytime soon as prices continue to spike. Basically,
<v Speaker 1>he's just like, yeah, this is I'll just read the quote.
<v Speaker 1>As much as we would love to have more supply,
<v Speaker 1>we do believe for a couple of quarters it is
<v Speaker 1>going to be very tight. CEO Jensen Wong said during
<v Speaker 1>this week's earning skull. If things improve by the end
<v Speaker 1>of the year, there is an opportunity to think about
<v Speaker 1>what that is from a year over year growth point
<v Speaker 1>of view, But it is still too early for us
<v Speaker 1>to know at this time.
<v Speaker 2>We will get back to you as soon as we can.
<v Speaker 1>Now, I want to give another story here, real quick
<v Speaker 1>baron to show you just how bad things are actually. So,
<v Speaker 1>Samsung makes memory, and they make memory for a bunch
<v Speaker 1>of different things, but one of the vendors they work
<v Speaker 1>with is Apple. Apple buys a lot of memory for
<v Speaker 1>iPhones from Samsung, and Samsung was hoping that they were
<v Speaker 1>going to be able to raise the price sixty percent
<v Speaker 1>of across the board for these companies. It's selling its
<v Speaker 1>low power DDR RAM. It's a DDR memory for and
<v Speaker 1>so okay, so they opened up negotiations with Apple at okay,
<v Speaker 1>what if it's one increase in price? And Apple went,
<v Speaker 1>how dare you we accept right away?
<v Speaker 2>Right away?
<v Speaker 1>They accepted, no negotiation, no counter offer, right away. Want
<v Speaker 1>a doubling of price to provide memory for iPhone, one
<v Speaker 1>of the best selling computers every year for the last
<v Speaker 1>twenty years. That is a bad sign, uh, because what
<v Speaker 1>that tells me is Apple, which is the company that
<v Speaker 1>has one of the best supply chains in the world.
<v Speaker 1>These are so that's what they really have done better
<v Speaker 1>than anyone else. That was Tim Cook's job with supply chain.
<v Speaker 1>They know what things are going to cost. To me,
<v Speaker 1>that says to them, we're getting a deal. Yeah, we
<v Speaker 1>only have to pay twice is more right now, as
<v Speaker 1>opposed if if we get in line right now we commit,
<v Speaker 1>as opposed to if we waited a couple of weeks
<v Speaker 1>and it would be three times is more. They jumped
<v Speaker 1>on that. That says they know something. It's gonna keep
<v Speaker 1>going up, up up. It's bad out there, right baron.
<v Speaker 4>It's always absolutely horrible, And honestly, it wouldn't surprise me
<v Speaker 4>if they extended the deal, extended that deal in terms
<v Speaker 4>of the timeframe, just to lock in that price for
<v Speaker 4>at least a few generations on at least a year
<v Speaker 4>or two, because it's like, hey, we'll take that like
<v Speaker 4>that that is scary, like folk like seeing the ram
<v Speaker 4>market go from what would be one hundred dollars to
<v Speaker 4>three hundred dollars, like across the board.
<v Speaker 3>I'm so glad.
<v Speaker 4>Okay, So the only reason I upgraded my computer my
<v Speaker 4>PC is because it broke and are cash in on
<v Speaker 4>my insurance And it was like two months before all
<v Speaker 4>of this went down.
<v Speaker 3>That's the only reason I did it.
<v Speaker 4>And it's I seen somebody rocking like a fake gold
<v Speaker 4>chain and it was like ram like.
<v Speaker 2>It hit some gold. I am d d R four.
<v Speaker 2>That's a question. Can make a necklace out of that?
<v Speaker 4>I'm telling you because that you're you're walking around with
<v Speaker 4>gold bricks, sir. You need security, you need a team.
<v Speaker 4>But no, this is this is insane. I don't know
<v Speaker 4>how else to put it. It's scary because the bottom
<v Speaker 4>line us as consumers, we're gonna be the ones to
<v Speaker 4>feel this like there there's no way these companies are
<v Speaker 4>gonna eat this. No way we're we're gonna be paying
<v Speaker 4>two thousand what was it, a thousand dollars for a phone?
<v Speaker 4>Now it's gonna be two like it's it.
<v Speaker 3>These are the.
<v Speaker 4>Type of numbers and it's not I feel like I'm
<v Speaker 4>not even being dramatic enough for how bad this is
<v Speaker 4>gonna be. First off, how bad it is and how
<v Speaker 4>it's going to equate across the board, like.
<v Speaker 1>It's horrible and it's uh, it's what they're all companies
<v Speaker 1>are already finding ways to uh creatively raise the price.
<v Speaker 1>Something I've talked about a bunch. Another expert is now
<v Speaker 1>kind of confirming as well. Nintendo already made a subtle
<v Speaker 1>switch To price hike. Expert says this is from Thomas
<v Speaker 1>Franz's at GameSpot. Nintendo's discontinuation of the five hundred dollars
<v Speaker 1>Nintendo switch To bundle with Mario Kart World is akin
<v Speaker 1>to a price hike, according to expert video game industry
<v Speaker 1>consultant Matthew Ball, speaking to the Game Business following the
<v Speaker 1>release of his The State of Video Gaming in twenty
<v Speaker 1>twenty six report, the conversation drifted toward the d ram
<v Speaker 1>crisis the video game industry currently faces in all the
<v Speaker 1>price hikes that have been happening. As a result, Ball
<v Speaker 1>argued that while the base price of switch To hasn't
<v Speaker 1>gone up yet, the discontinuation of the Mario Kart World
<v Speaker 1>bundle is essentially a price increase for most people. Man,
<v Speaker 1>from day one, we were having conversations on this show
<v Speaker 1>when they announced that that was the skew model, where
<v Speaker 1>it's like here's four fifty, here's five hundred with Mario
<v Speaker 1>Kart World, and we're telling you right now it's temporary.
<v Speaker 1>It's like, oh, this is them building in a trapdoor
<v Speaker 1>so that they can stealthily raise prices when they need to,
<v Speaker 1>and if they want to, they could reintroduce that bundle
<v Speaker 1>whenever they want at five twenty and at that point
<v Speaker 1>it's like, okay, so now we've effectively gotten twenty more
<v Speaker 1>dollars out of most people, because this is how they're
<v Speaker 1>gonna buy it. In the meantime, you have to buy
<v Speaker 1>the game separate from the four hundred and fifty dollars version,
<v Speaker 1>so they already are getting twenty more dollars out of
<v Speaker 1>you if you are buying Mario Kart World, and certainly
<v Speaker 1>if you're buying a game, you're just going to be
<v Speaker 1>paying more. Yeah, this is how they have been thinking
<v Speaker 1>ahead on these things. Now, Baron, I do think they
<v Speaker 1>are probably already maximizing like what they can do stealthily
<v Speaker 1>and creatively, and they are also probably still feeling pressure
<v Speaker 1>to raise prices because things are going up so much
<v Speaker 1>more than anyone predicted. Right, so this quiet little price
<v Speaker 1>increase could quickly turn into a very loud one, right.
<v Speaker 4>Oh, a million percent. I remember when they first announced
<v Speaker 4>the price this price point. The first thing we were
<v Speaker 4>saying you had of scene was like, oh, go buy
<v Speaker 4>it now if you're thinking about buying it like this,
<v Speaker 4>we live in a world now where you can almost
<v Speaker 4>guarantee the price of the console is going to go up,
<v Speaker 4>not down, Like we're we live.
<v Speaker 2>In a different world now for a long time now.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, yeah, like this is a new world and things
<v Speaker 4>don't get cheaper. Blame nostalgia, I don't know, but it
<v Speaker 4>so knowing that if you're thinking about getting in and
<v Speaker 4>get in, are go you know, McCary or something or eBay, and.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, or go get go, get your illegal ROMs
<v Speaker 1>on on myriant the website I would never say out
<v Speaker 1>loud until now, because they announced they're shutting down yesterday.
<v Speaker 2>Uh they're shutting down in March.
<v Speaker 1>Everybody so cool, I'm gonna go walk into the fucking ocean.
<v Speaker 2>Uh. We can't have anything, you know. You know.
<v Speaker 1>One of the reasons that the people who run Myrant
<v Speaker 1>game for shutting down this incredible resource for downloading ROMs
<v Speaker 1>ram prices.
<v Speaker 2>It's coming for the old games too. It's too expensive
<v Speaker 2>to host the goddamn website. Who I'm in hell?
<v Speaker 4>No, No, it's bad across the board.
<v Speaker 1>So it's like if if we can't afford to run
<v Speaker 1>our old rom sites, uh, and those have to go away,
<v Speaker 1>You bet your ass. We're getting price increases on stuff
<v Speaker 1>like a switch to at some point. So yeah, I'm
<v Speaker 1>not gonna tell people to go rush out and get
<v Speaker 1>these things because don't make them earn it. But I
<v Speaker 1>mean they're also going to make you pay more while
<v Speaker 1>they make you earn it, so you make them money.
<v Speaker 3>So what future are we are we closer to? Is
<v Speaker 3>it Dune? Is it cyberpunk? Is it?
<v Speaker 2>Right?
<v Speaker 1>I mean I wish we were closer to Dune in
<v Speaker 1>some ways because then at least we get a little
<v Speaker 1>bit of a nice little technical, technocratic jihad and.
<v Speaker 2>We can.
<v Speaker 1>Take Now.
<v Speaker 2>No, yeah, we could go get Luigi.
<v Speaker 1>And do something about this, but yeah, I don't think
<v Speaker 1>we're that.
<v Speaker 2>Close to that unfortunately.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, all right, let's hit these last couple of stories.
<v Speaker 2>We're going long now.
<v Speaker 1>Guitar Hero Studio Red Octane returns with Spiritual successor Stage Tour.
<v Speaker 2>This is from Chris Scullion at VGC.
<v Speaker 1>A newly reformed Red Octane Games revealed its upcoming Spiritual
<v Speaker 1>Success You're to guitar here z Row. The studio has
<v Speaker 1>revealed Stage Tour, a new music title currently in active
<v Speaker 1>development with plans to release by the twenty twenty six
<v Speaker 1>holiday season. According to the studio, Stage Tour will be
<v Speaker 1>a long term platform created in conjunction with the community,
<v Speaker 1>and will continue to evolve following its release. It's kind
<v Speaker 1>of the way this thing probably has to go, because
<v Speaker 1>I mean, I think the only alternative to something like
<v Speaker 1>this baron is you position it as a plug and play.
<v Speaker 1>Just plug it into the Here's an HDMI box. You
<v Speaker 1>plug that into the back of your TV. It's got
<v Speaker 1>twenty five songs on it and a controller string is
<v Speaker 1>connected to a core through the back in one person
<v Speaker 1>plays and it's in Walmart in the as scene on
<v Speaker 1>TV section for seventy nine to ninety nine.
<v Speaker 2>That's the only other way they're going to be able
<v Speaker 2>to get away with this right now.
<v Speaker 1>And this is much more respectable and probably easy to
<v Speaker 1>make money long term. If you can really build a platform,
<v Speaker 1>what do you think the appetite is for a Guitar
<v Speaker 1>Hero platform to return?
<v Speaker 4>People want to field things again. This is why game
<v Speaker 4>informers back at doors. This is why you know, people
<v Speaker 4>are buying physical you know, this is where I com forum.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, you know, you know. Yeah.
<v Speaker 4>See people want to feel something, so in saying that,
<v Speaker 4>they they definitely maybe this is where they can partner
<v Speaker 4>up with Pokemon and do the hit clips and create
<v Speaker 4>a hit clips guit hard thing where bluetooths to the screen.
<v Speaker 4>You just slide in the track on a chip.
<v Speaker 2>Cut the check.
<v Speaker 3>I just did. I just give everybody a billion dollar
<v Speaker 3>right now.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, you go in on that.
<v Speaker 4>You go to the store and there's like, instead of
<v Speaker 4>CD racks, it's a hit clip rack, and it's like,
<v Speaker 4>what game do you want to what song do you
<v Speaker 4>want to play?
<v Speaker 3>One?
<v Speaker 4>I want yeah, because because guess what, You'll own the forever. Yes,
<v Speaker 4>you'll own that song forever because it will be on
<v Speaker 4>that chip and as long as.
<v Speaker 3>You got a little battery, you be able to read
<v Speaker 3>yellow and green.
<v Speaker 2>I want to.
<v Speaker 1>I want I want the songs to come on the
<v Speaker 1>E card reader thing for the Game Boy Advance and
<v Speaker 1>just like that to swipe like fifteen car cards to
<v Speaker 1>hear call me baby, all right, call me maybe I'm sorry.
<v Speaker 2>That was bad. That's where I'm at today.
<v Speaker 1>Everybody Marathon Server Slam gets big player numbers on Steam.
<v Speaker 1>I'm trying to find the exact number. Yeah, one hundred
<v Speaker 1>forty and twenty one concurrent players. Not bad, right, This
<v Speaker 1>is like a pretty This is their opportunity to prove
<v Speaker 1>to the world Marathon is going to be a thing.
<v Speaker 2>And this is how you start it.
<v Speaker 1>Right, You get an initial big bang, and then on Saturday,
<v Speaker 1>if that grows a significant amount, something's happening in marathon land, right,
<v Speaker 1>and they could next week begin charging for this game.
<v Speaker 1>They will, and people might show up if they're excited
<v Speaker 1>from what they play.
<v Speaker 2>Right now, what do you what are you thinking?
<v Speaker 4>I think this is also a great way to address
<v Speaker 4>some of the issues that high guards skipped on, like
<v Speaker 4>you know, pivoting, like bigger, bigger teams. Maybe you add,
<v Speaker 4>you know, add a different number of players in the
<v Speaker 4>map at the same time. Like these are the things
<v Speaker 4>you can test out and make adjustments for. And then, honestly,
<v Speaker 4>I've always I've been a firm believer that that forty
<v Speaker 4>dollars is that magic price point in today's world, Like
<v Speaker 4>that's that that's that three meals at McDonald's money and
<v Speaker 4>you can go and have a game. It's all horrible
<v Speaker 4>oh dude, Yeah, that's why I'm with you with the
<v Speaker 4>technological god, I'm all with you doing that because we
<v Speaker 4>are you know. But that forty dollars is that sweet spot,
<v Speaker 4>and that's enough money for me to roll the dice.
<v Speaker 1>Like, right, that's a that's a number that you can
<v Speaker 1>reasonably approach your friend group and make that argument three
<v Speaker 1>meals at McDonald's, right, you get beyond that, it's really hard.
<v Speaker 1>Obviously the friends slop corner of guys, it's seven bucks,
<v Speaker 1>let's fucking go. They have they have that cornered and
<v Speaker 1>it's like that's working really well for them. That is
<v Speaker 1>not viable for a big game like Marathon.
<v Speaker 2>So what is there? What is there?
<v Speaker 1>You know, what was the game that was eight dollars?
<v Speaker 1>Is five dollars still or whatever? Yeah, it was that peak.
<v Speaker 1>I can't remember what it was. I think it was
<v Speaker 1>peak mar Yeah, it might have been peak. It's like, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I think for these games, forty dollars still feel like
<v Speaker 1>thirty two dollars in some way, especially like it when
<v Speaker 1>it watches on Steam and it does have that ten percent,
<v Speaker 1>but you know, a discount right on day one and
<v Speaker 1>it's thirty.
<v Speaker 2>Two dollars, that makes it a little bit easier.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, last thing here, Resident Evil Requiem arrives to an
<v Speaker 1>immense bang on Steam smashing series all time play a record.
<v Speaker 1>I'm telling you this game, like event game, is the
<v Speaker 1>way to I'm gonna keep positioning it. It feels like
<v Speaker 1>it was set to go off like a bomb.
<v Speaker 2>Here.
<v Speaker 1>It is two hundred and sixty seven thousand concurrent players
<v Speaker 1>on Steam as it arrived overnight. That was midnight eastern,
<v Speaker 1>nine pm Pacific. Yeah, I think this game has earned it,
<v Speaker 1>Like the buzz is pretty high around it, it has
<v Speaker 1>great reviews, and now people are gonna get get.
<v Speaker 2>A chance to play it.
<v Speaker 1>It certainly feels like another moment for the series that's
<v Speaker 1>had multiple moments at this point.
<v Speaker 4>Right, And I have to say, what makes this game
<v Speaker 4>so amazing is the pacing. It does an amazing I've
<v Speaker 4>only I have about two hours into it, but the
<v Speaker 4>pacing is beautiful.
<v Speaker 2>Two hours, yes, don't. They're relentless. They go back and forth,
<v Speaker 2>just can't wait to see what's next.
<v Speaker 4>Yeah, it does a good it and that's that's what's
<v Speaker 4>really gonna grab folks.
<v Speaker 3>Like it's Resident Evil is all the way back and.
<v Speaker 4>It gives you everything you everything you liked about the
<v Speaker 4>previous Resident Evils gives it to you.
<v Speaker 3>In spades, like it it's there. Oh my god.
<v Speaker 1>I mean it's like it's worth pointing out, like of
<v Speaker 1>course it's back, right, but now this is the first
<v Speaker 1>like Leon Kennedy new new game since like you know,
<v Speaker 1>the five and six era, and so oh now this
<v Speaker 1>really does put us like a period on the end
<v Speaker 1>of the sentence.
<v Speaker 2>Resident Evil is back.
<v Speaker 1>It's like, yeah, those Ethan Winter Games Winter's Games were
<v Speaker 1>awesome in their way, and this is like, oh no,
<v Speaker 1>this is like that but better and also like the
<v Speaker 1>old Resident Evils but better who very cool stuff.
<v Speaker 2>So yeah, I all I recommend it. Loved it.
<v Speaker 4>All I have to say is black spot. For those
<v Speaker 4>who know, you know.
<v Speaker 2>We are going to wrap up the headlines with that.
<v Speaker 1>Everybody, We have a poll question we should get to
<v Speaker 1>from yesterday as we do kind of run into the
<v Speaker 1>hour here, let's see here, I'm going to refresh and
<v Speaker 1>get the most recent results. Are you getting Resident Evil
<v Speaker 1>Requiem this weekend?
<v Speaker 2>Yes?
<v Speaker 1>No, and not yet but I will soon. Not yet,
<v Speaker 1>but I will assume it was twenty five percent of respondents.
<v Speaker 1>Then thirty three percent was no, meaning our number one
<v Speaker 1>response was yes, forty two percent of the thirty five
<v Speaker 1>hundred people that voted on this planning to get it.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, and you could see that.
<v Speaker 1>Apparently it's already above three hundred thousand concurrence right now
<v Speaker 1>on Steam and we are in the morning time, still
<v Speaker 1>in a lot of this a lot of parts of
<v Speaker 1>this country. So yeah, by this evening that game is
<v Speaker 1>going to be maybe at like eight hundred thousand concurrents
<v Speaker 1>something crazy.
<v Speaker 2>It really feels like we could do that. Yep, all right,
<v Speaker 2>we did that.
<v Speaker 1>There is no new poll question because we're going to
<v Speaker 1>wrap up the week with the bomb twelve piece to
<v Speaker 1>E three. May it rest in peace, of course, Barren.

<v Speaker 4>you got puzzles, you have a map with inputs, and
<v Speaker 4>then an infinite dungeon and it just if you.
