<v Speaker 1>six times on the show. I get to be a
<v Speaker 1>part of the What the Heck Happened? Series, and when
<v Speaker 1>I'm not taking care of the film by podcast, I
<v Speaker 1>am an avid listener, a Patreon supporter, and a huge
<v Speaker 1>fan of the Shirley you Can't Be Serious Podcast. So, guys,
<v Speaker 1>first off, thank you for giving me this opportunity for
<v Speaker 1>this very special episode, because it's something I've been hoping
<v Speaker 1>we would get at some point, you know, a little
<v Speaker 1>peak behind the curtain at the Shirley You Can't Be
<v Speaker 1>Serious Podcasts. I kind of want to dig dig in,
<v Speaker 1>and I want to ask you some some questions about
<v Speaker 1>how this show makes it to us week in and
<v Speaker 1>week out.
<v Speaker 2>Absolutely, man, thanks for doing that for us.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, we were talking and Jason had told me that
<v Speaker 5>remember who it was, that maybe you had talked to
<v Speaker 5>about people like a little behind the scenes peak of things,
<v Speaker 5>and I was like, well, yeah, that's what we do, Like,
<v Speaker 5>that's our whole stick is we give every behind the
<v Speaker 5>scenes story of interest that we can on all these albums.
<v Speaker 5>Why wouldn't we do it for our own podcast?
<v Speaker 1>I guess so well, Yeah, I just I love the
<v Speaker 1>behind the scenes featurettes, the audio commentaries, and you guys
<v Speaker 1>do such an amazing job giving us the details on
<v Speaker 1>some of our our all time favorite movies, are all
<v Speaker 1>time favorite albums, and I thought, well, I want to
<v Speaker 1>behind the scenes featurette on the sureley you can't be
<v Speaker 1>serious podcasts. So I appreciate you guys taking the time
<v Speaker 1>to to answer some questions that I feel, I know
<v Speaker 1>I'm curious about, and I think a lot of your
<v Speaker 1>listeners would also be curious about.

<v Speaker 1>Yeah, let's get into this guys. Now, For someone that
<v Speaker 1>hasn't listened to the Surely you Can't Be Serious podcast,
<v Speaker 1>how would you describe the show or better yet, entice
<v Speaker 1>someone to become a new follower.
<v Speaker 2>Well, we've always kind of said that our podcast is
<v Speaker 2>a podcast for the MTV generation. So there's a period
<v Speaker 2>of time from about nineteen eighty one until about the
<v Speaker 2>two thousand mark probably where we as a culture shared
<v Speaker 2>so many common experiences movies, pop culture moments, albums, music videos,
<v Speaker 2>and we like to celebrate those moments. We celebrate that
<v Speaker 2>we do it political free, and we do it with
<v Speaker 2>just a lot of fun. And that's kind of what
<v Speaker 2>I would describe us as.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, I mean, I think the best way to put
<v Speaker 5>it is, we're like having a conversation with your good
<v Speaker 5>friends about the things that you love the most.
<v Speaker 1>I like that you say that. D The banter between
<v Speaker 1>you to I think is one of the highlights of
<v Speaker 1>this show. Where does that chemistry come from?
<v Speaker 5>This goes back to kind of the origin of everything.
<v Speaker 5>When Jason and I first really started hanging out, we
<v Speaker 5>started running together and I'd never run more than three
<v Speaker 5>miles in my life, and Jason got me out not
<v Speaker 5>only to run, but found a hill for us to
<v Speaker 5>run up, and I kept telling him I was not
<v Speaker 5>afraid to quit, and we just talked. You know, it
<v Speaker 5>was just like guys talk, but like we're running on
<v Speaker 5>the road. And I got done with our distance and
<v Speaker 5>I was like, that wasn't that kind of went by
<v Speaker 5>because it wasn't boring and tedious. I was talking with
<v Speaker 5>a good guy about stuff that we both enjoyed. And
<v Speaker 5>then we just kept doing that over and over and
<v Speaker 5>over again, and longer distances didn't seem to matter because
<v Speaker 5>we always had something to talk about. You know. The
<v Speaker 5>kind of the sparkle moment that we didn't realize was
<v Speaker 5>a sparkle moment was until like ten years later, was
<v Speaker 5>that he would say something. You know, I would say
<v Speaker 5>something about Thriller being the best album of all time,
<v Speaker 5>and he would say, well, you know everybody thinks that,
<v Speaker 5>but Bad was actually a better album.
<v Speaker 4>And I don't know.
<v Speaker 5>It was like, you're crazy, dude, And and we had
<v Speaker 5>those similar type of things, you know, for various things
<v Speaker 5>that would pop up and then life goes on. Ten
<v Speaker 5>years later, I've moved out of the neighborhood, but we're
<v Speaker 5>still very good friends. And he called me up and said, uh, well,
<v Speaker 5>I'm thinking about doing a podcast. Which I had talked
<v Speaker 5>to him about this already because I had gotten a
<v Speaker 5>microphone thinking I'm going to do a podcast too, just
<v Speaker 5>trying to figure out what it was going to be about.
<v Speaker 5>And he said, do you think people would listen to
<v Speaker 5>a podcast? This is going to hit home for you, Jeff,
<v Speaker 5>do you think people would listen to a podcast about Frasier?
<v Speaker 5>And I said no, I.
<v Speaker 2>Still think you're wrong about that though, but keep going, Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>I don't know about that.
<v Speaker 5>So I so I said, you know, if you did
<v Speaker 5>a podcast about Cheers. I mean, that's an iconic series
<v Speaker 5>of the eighties. That's something that I absolutely think, even
<v Speaker 5>though it's been you know, not running for years and years,
<v Speaker 5>that people would totally tune in for that. And he said, well,
<v Speaker 5>I kind of think that Fraser is actually better than Cheers,
<v Speaker 5>and I was like crazy. And then ten minutes after
<v Speaker 5>we hung up the phone and I called him back
<v Speaker 5>and I said, why don't we do a podcast together
<v Speaker 5>where we do something like this, where we take something
<v Speaker 5>that you think is better than something that I think
<v Speaker 5>is obviously better, and we just make the podcast about that.
<v Speaker 5>We put two things against each other, and initially it
<v Speaker 5>was kind of gonna it was going to be like
<v Speaker 5>I was going to defend my side the whole time
<v Speaker 5>and he was going to defend his side the whole time.
<v Speaker 5>But what it ended up being was just another one
<v Speaker 5>of those conversations like we had when we were running,
<v Speaker 5>where we would just kind of nerd out and go, hey,
<v Speaker 5>did you know about this? And the other guy would
<v Speaker 5>be like, no, but did you hear about this? And
<v Speaker 5>so we just we kind of made some fun out
<v Speaker 5>of trying to wow the other guy with this new
<v Speaker 5>piece of information that we had, and I think everybody
<v Speaker 5>else seemed to kind of enjoy that as well, just like, Hey,
<v Speaker 5>I didn't. I've loved this whatever album or movie since
<v Speaker 5>I was a little kid, and I had no idea
<v Speaker 5>about these stories behind it. And that's we've just it's
<v Speaker 5>been a joy to try to learn these things and
<v Speaker 5>then share that with everybody else.
<v Speaker 2>By the way, before you started, Jeff, my good friend
<v Speaker 2>and yours too, Jeff Johnson made a good point. He
<v Speaker 2>brought this up to me No. Two three weeks ago.
<v Speaker 2>He said, I went back and I re listened to
<v Speaker 2>your very first like the trailer episode. Oh yeah, like
<v Speaker 2>before we started the podcast and were putting out those previews,
<v Speaker 2>and he's like, you've done everything that you teased up
<v Speaker 2>in that trailer except for one matchup?
<v Speaker 5>Was it?
<v Speaker 2>Fraser and Frasier and Cheers is the one that we
<v Speaker 2>haven't done.
<v Speaker 5>We have yet to put a TV show against a
<v Speaker 5>TV show And yeah, it's always just been out there
<v Speaker 5>hovering out there like that. It's a hard one.
<v Speaker 1>A movie versus movie, album versus album, but we've never
<v Speaker 1>had the TV show versus TV show. And this is
<v Speaker 1>the origin of the show that you can't be serious.
<v Speaker 1>I for one would love to hear it, because, uh,
<v Speaker 1>I'm a big Fraser fan, but I don't know that
<v Speaker 1>I'm gonna be a team Fraser when it's all said
<v Speaker 1>and done. Has Di has won me over many times already? Well,
<v Speaker 1>this happens every time we do this. Sometimes though he's
<v Speaker 1>made I told you recently, you guys did last season.
<v Speaker 1>You had this amazing breakfast club versus Santamo's fire episode,
<v Speaker 1>and Jason, I think I told you I was devastated
<v Speaker 1>because d won me over to his way of thinking.
<v Speaker 1>I went home, I watched Sanamos fired. I was like,
<v Speaker 1>oh my god, He's right. It just broke. It just
<v Speaker 1>broke me, man, And so you never know where you're
<v Speaker 1>gonna land. I love that about what you guys do.
<v Speaker 1>I have to ask, though, how much of what we
<v Speaker 1>hear is planned versus spontaneous.
<v Speaker 5>I will tell you that we deliberately do our best
<v Speaker 5>not to talk about what we're gonna talk about before
<v Speaker 5>we talk about it. We tried very hard, but we're
<v Speaker 5>also very good friends, and we talk on the phone
<v Speaker 5>about every single day, and we kind of slipped a
<v Speaker 5>few times and occasionally Jason or I will say, hey,
<v Speaker 5>don't let me forget to talk about whatever the girlfriend
<v Speaker 5>of whoever or whatever you know, But honestly, most of
<v Speaker 5>it is most of it is completely off the cuff.
<v Speaker 5>We've got stories that we want to tell. Like I've
<v Speaker 5>I've done my research, I've picked out the stories that
<v Speaker 5>I want to talk about. He's done the same thing.
<v Speaker 5>But we will. We we riff off of each other.
<v Speaker 5>That's I don't think it would be good to listen
<v Speaker 5>to if we had it scripted out, I.
<v Speaker 2>Would say that we're very We care a lot about
<v Speaker 2>our research. We do a lot of reading and studying,
<v Speaker 2>but our conversations are spontaneous.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, okay, so, uh, you know you got you. You
<v Speaker 1>mentioned the friendship a little bit here across social media.
<v Speaker 1>I'm talking YouTube and your Patreon page. You guys have
<v Speaker 1>built this amazing family culture with your listening audience, and
<v Speaker 1>many of them have connected with each other. Uh. How
<v Speaker 1>do you feel about that? Was that always the intention?
<v Speaker 1>Or has it has it all been happenstance?
<v Speaker 5>You know? I the super Bowl just got over. I
<v Speaker 5>don't know when this episode will air or anything, but
<v Speaker 5>the super Bowl just got over. A couple of days ago,
<v Speaker 5>and when it was done and they were interviewing the guys,
<v Speaker 5>I immediately thought about Bull Durham and like every single
<v Speaker 5>guy is like, oh, these are my brothers. Man, I
<v Speaker 5>couldn't have done without my team. You know, we've we've
<v Speaker 5>overcome adversity and we don't know these things. And this
<v Speaker 5>coach has been the best leader I've ever had, and
<v Speaker 5>just you know, it's always about the other and it's
<v Speaker 5>it's silly because you know, those guys have worked incredibly
<v Speaker 5>hard to get where they are and they've got to
<v Speaker 5>want to go. Man. I really worked hard to get here,
<v Speaker 5>but nobody says that in this particular circumstance. I mean, yeah,
<v Speaker 5>we put in a lot of hard work. But man,
<v Speaker 5>we couldn't. I could not have possibly imagined when we
<v Speaker 5>started this thing, how amazing the people that would tune
<v Speaker 5>in touch base with us, become our friends, become our
<v Speaker 5>close friends, that we would have this opportunity that we
<v Speaker 5>all get to go to a place together and eat
<v Speaker 5>and drink and laugh and play games with people from
<v Speaker 5>literally all over the country. And we've got people who
<v Speaker 5>contact us from all over the world. We've got we've
<v Speaker 5>got to guy guy in Sweden who hits me up
<v Speaker 5>on Facebook routine, le Jimmy, Jimmy. I mean it's and
<v Speaker 5>he's he's showing me pictures of where he's living and
<v Speaker 5>what and you know, this big animal crossing across the.
<v Speaker 2>Pond his place is awesome.
<v Speaker 5>But oh it's beautiful, it's it's incredible, and I'm just thinking, man,
<v Speaker 5>I just need to find an excuse to go out
<v Speaker 5>there and hang out with Jimmy for a little while.
<v Speaker 5>So this crazy unexpected thing is what I would say
<v Speaker 5>is the best part about the podcast is that we
<v Speaker 5>have We've met people from all over the world. We've
<v Speaker 5>gotten not just to meet them, to get close with them,
<v Speaker 5>and they are the coolest, most wonderful people. Like I'm
<v Speaker 5>sure everybody says about their fans, but I mean it's true.
<v Speaker 5>Our our fans are the best effing fans out there.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, it's been really I mean, I mean, you've been
<v Speaker 2>a part of all this stuff, and you know, we've
<v Speaker 2>met people from all over the place and and become
<v Speaker 2>friends with them. We've gotten to meet people that that
<v Speaker 2>I looked up to, John Reid and Pat Cannagallo and
<v Speaker 2>Jeff Mazuka and those guys over at the thirty Sething
<v Speaker 2>Movie podcast. They helped us get started. We've actually haven't
<v Speaker 2>been in the room with Pat or Jeff yet, but
<v Speaker 2>I have. We hung out with John Reid over the
<v Speaker 2>weekend and you have to so we got to meet
<v Speaker 2>the people who helped us, influenced us. And then we've
<v Speaker 2>also kind of been a part of other people who
<v Speaker 2>who we've kind of been a part of their origin story,
<v Speaker 2>who kind of helped them a little bit get their
<v Speaker 2>thing going.
<v Speaker 1>So he yeah, I don't mind saying it right here.
<v Speaker 1>And now I know we were we were a struggling
<v Speaker 1>show until you guys came into our life and just
<v Speaker 1>just the fact that you opened up and said, hey,
<v Speaker 1>let us help. And by the way, you know you
<v Speaker 1>we're cool. You're cool. Let's let's let's make something of this. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>you definitely we the film by podcast. It was a
<v Speaker 1>lot to both of you for for helping launch us
<v Speaker 1>and get us where we're at. So I can't think enough.
<v Speaker 1>I'm everything. And to D's point, it's it's it's always
<v Speaker 1>great when that when you get that kind of success,
<v Speaker 1>But at the same time, the true success is the
<v Speaker 1>friendships that have happened here, Like you know we've we're
<v Speaker 1>kind of talking about hanging out that you know, Shirley
<v Speaker 1>Fest is It's the highlight of my year now. I
<v Speaker 1>look forward to it every every every September. It's like
<v Speaker 1>I can't wait, you know. So it's an awesome time.
<v Speaker 2>By the way, back to what I originally said, you
<v Speaker 2>can get ten people from my hometown and they won't
<v Speaker 2>agree on politics, religion, schooling, how to raise your kids,
<v Speaker 2>but you can start a conversation on whether bad is
<v Speaker 2>better than thriller or thriller is better than bad, and
<v Speaker 2>people from around the world have opinions and are ready
<v Speaker 2>to talk about it. And I think it's one of
<v Speaker 2>the cool things that maybe maybe the last cool thing
<v Speaker 2>of our generation, is this ship experience that we could
<v Speaker 2>all talk about, hang out, celebrate and have fun with.
<v Speaker 1>Now, Jason, you you talked about the research a few
<v Speaker 1>minutes ago, and while you both seem to be subject
<v Speaker 1>matter experts on music and movies from the eighties and nineties,
<v Speaker 1>I imagine the research a lot. There's a lot that goes
<v Speaker 1>into each episode. Can you walk us through your your
<v Speaker 1>prep process.
<v Speaker 2>Well, here's what I'll tell you.
<v Speaker 5>It's very different for the both of them.
<v Speaker 2>This is why we get along. This is why I
<v Speaker 2>show works. I think is because he cares about things
<v Speaker 2>that are not as important to me, and I care
<v Speaker 2>about things that aren't as important to him. And when
<v Speaker 2>we put them together, it's kind of the chocolate and
<v Speaker 2>peanut butter thing. But yeah, there's there's a lot of reading.
<v Speaker 2>We spend hours getting ready for each episode.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, and I've I've changed a lot over the last
<v Speaker 5>seven years. I spent a lot more time doing the research.
<v Speaker 5>But you know, you just kind of hone your process
<v Speaker 5>a little bit and you figure out what's working for
<v Speaker 5>you and what's not. And so, you know, when we
<v Speaker 5>first started doing this, I would probably I would spend
<v Speaker 5>ten hours of research per episode, and then I would
<v Speaker 5>go and I was I was editing all of the
<v Speaker 5>episodes to begin with, and I'd spend another ten hours
<v Speaker 5>doing that. Now, fortunately Jason has taken over the editing process,
<v Speaker 5>and you know, he's become incredibly good at that and
<v Speaker 5>make it. It's much faster for him than it was. I'm
<v Speaker 5>sure when he first started doing it as well. But
<v Speaker 5>now I've got it down to maybe half that. You know,
<v Speaker 5>for I was talking to I was talking to a
<v Speaker 5>class We actually actually actually got to go talk to
<v Speaker 5>my son's high school class about podcasting because they had
<v Speaker 5>a podcasting project. And that was one of the questions
<v Speaker 5>of how much you know, how much time do you
<v Speaker 5>have to prepare for an hour long episode? And I
<v Speaker 5>was like, well, I'm going to spend four hours and
<v Speaker 5>at this point four to five hours doing research. He's
<v Speaker 5>going to spend four to five hours doing editing. So
<v Speaker 5>for one hour long episode, you're talking about a full
<v Speaker 5>work day eight to ten hours.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, aside from the editing, has anything over the years,
<v Speaker 1>has anything else is kind of kind of change in
<v Speaker 1>your process? How you go about it?
<v Speaker 2>Jason, Well, we finally found a home. Like we record
<v Speaker 2>in my upstairs bonus room. Now, as you can see,
<v Speaker 2>we've got the Shirley wall.
<v Speaker 1>The wall, it is just the Shirley wall is amazing.
<v Speaker 2>But you know, when we started, I had young kids
<v Speaker 2>at home and they were loud and rambunctious, and I
<v Speaker 2>had a barking dog and all that other stuff. And
<v Speaker 2>now you know, we used to move. We've done it
<v Speaker 2>at your office, We've done it at my church. We
<v Speaker 2>did it at the library, like the law library one time.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, our first our very first episode we recorded in
<v Speaker 5>a private room at the law school because I was
<v Speaker 5>able to get that because I knew that would be
<v Speaker 5>I mean because I have small had small kids too,
<v Speaker 5>I knew that would be a place that would be quiet,
<v Speaker 5>be quiet. So we did a handful of shows at
<v Speaker 5>the law school. Then we found the church. Jason's church
<v Speaker 5>had a fantastic room. Then that went under construction, and
<v Speaker 5>so we had to find a new place. I had
<v Speaker 5>an office that we went to recorded a whole bunch
<v Speaker 5>of episodes down there, and then things happened and we
<v Speaker 5>ended up over here, and here's been great. We had
<v Speaker 5>no idea that the whole time this upstairs room would
<v Speaker 5>be the perfect sound booth for the podcast.
<v Speaker 1>Now, looking back over the last year, and I know
<v Speaker 1>you guys might have different opinions here, but looking back
<v Speaker 1>of the last year, which episode do you both feel
<v Speaker 1>best represents what the podcast has become? And more importantly why.
<v Speaker 5>We haven't actually talked about it to see if we agree.
<v Speaker 5>But I'll throw this out there to see if Jason
<v Speaker 5>agrees with me. I for last year, last season, I
<v Speaker 5>would say to a definitive pair of episodes for us
<v Speaker 5>and what we've become now is going it's going to
<v Speaker 5>be the Eagles' greatest hits versus Jimmy Buffett. I don't
<v Speaker 5>know if that's thought or not, but you have two
<v Speaker 5>absolute powerhouses. We had great stories on all of the
<v Speaker 5>guys involved in those things, and we also had a
<v Speaker 5>lot of fun with it. You know, we dressed up
<v Speaker 5>in Wholewaiian shirts and had mocktail margeritas while we talked
<v Speaker 5>about Jimmy Buffett an ative cheeseburger, you know, in Paradise
<v Speaker 5>because that's where it was. But uh, and the Eagles one.
<v Speaker 5>The Eagles one has been absolutely the biggest hit of
<v Speaker 5>last year, like as far as downloads go, and Away
<v Speaker 5>earn away the best biggest hit.
<v Speaker 2>So I agree. I think that's our best matchup of
<v Speaker 2>the of the year. And it was in the middle
<v Speaker 2>of summer, and the Hawaiian shirts were fun and the
<v Speaker 2>got we got the fancy drink cups and you know,
<v Speaker 2>we had the little umbrellas and that was to me,
<v Speaker 2>if you're going to listen to one set of episodes
<v Speaker 2>from last season, that's the one I would recommend to somebody.
<v Speaker 2>H But maybe the one I'm most proud of that
<v Speaker 2>is kind of maybe off the beaten track a little bit.
<v Speaker 2>I had one episode in particular that I kind of
<v Speaker 2>edited with my dad in mind, okay, because we covered Chicago,
<v Speaker 2>and Chicago has been around long enough that he was
<v Speaker 2>a fan and they drifted into the MTV generation and
<v Speaker 2>I picked up on him on the seventeenth album, right
<v Speaker 2>Chicago seventeen. And so when we did that, man, I
<v Speaker 2>needle dropped a whole bunch of early stuff because I
<v Speaker 2>knew he would be listening and I wanted him to
<v Speaker 2>enjoy it. And it was a great It was a
<v Speaker 2>fun episode. So, by the way.
<v Speaker 1>That was a great episode. I love that one.
<v Speaker 5>Thank you.
<v Speaker 2>There is one set of episodes and I told thee
<v Speaker 2>this maybe six months ago. That doesn't get a lot
<v Speaker 2>of downloads, and it wasn't from the season, but I
<v Speaker 2>think Dee and I were like on point. It was
<v Speaker 2>maybe our most fun conversation we did any which way
<v Speaker 2>you can, versus every which way but loose a couple
<v Speaker 2>of seasons ago. Yes, we we cracked up. We laughed.
<v Speaker 2>We had a ball doing that and we talked, you know,
<v Speaker 2>talking about monkeys flipping off cops.
<v Speaker 5>And and that one, I mean, to Jason's point, that
<v Speaker 5>was the one I had my dad in mind because
<v Speaker 5>he loved, loved Clint Eastwood love those movies. I can
<v Speaker 5>remember watching them all the time with him when I
<v Speaker 5>was a little kid. And I think, I mean, it's
<v Speaker 5>been a little while since I've looked at them downloads,

<v Speaker 1>you guys, you cover content that boasts a lot of
<v Speaker 1>eighties and nineties nostalgia. Why do you think movies and
<v Speaker 1>music of these two decades still connect so strongly with
<v Speaker 1>today's listeners.
<v Speaker 5>I don't know really how to answer that question. The
<v Speaker 5>guys that are listening to podcasts grew up with those movies.
<v Speaker 5>That's that's kind of a key factor there, right, the
<v Speaker 5>gen X guys who are in the somewhere in between,
<v Speaker 5>you know, thirty five and fifty five, this is what
<v Speaker 5>we grew up with, right, And so there's that factor.
<v Speaker 5>There are still good movies that get made, but not
<v Speaker 5>nearly as many. I mean, it doesn't. It's not. It
<v Speaker 5>doesn't take a cinematic expert to go and look at
<v Speaker 5>one summer any pick any summer of the nineteen eighties
<v Speaker 5>and compare it to a whole year of any year
<v Speaker 5>of the twenty first century, and you're gonna go, why
<v Speaker 5>are there so many great movies in one summer that
<v Speaker 5>are more than there are in the whole year for
<v Speaker 5>the twenty first century. It's just, I mean, things changed
<v Speaker 5>in the in the studio world, things changed in the
<v Speaker 5>production world. There was there was a transition that occurred
<v Speaker 5>at that time that was just a magic moment. And
<v Speaker 5>my kids will even say it. They're like, Dad, you're
<v Speaker 5>born in nineteen seventy five. I was like yeah. They're like,
<v Speaker 5>you got to be a kid during the eighties and
<v Speaker 5>I was like yeah. And they're like, you got to
<v Speaker 5>be a teenager during the nineties and I was like yeah.
<v Speaker 5>And they're like and there wasn't any like social media
<v Speaker 5>or cameras or anything like that going on, and I
<v Speaker 5>was like no. And they're like, and you.
<v Speaker 6>Got to kind of just run around and do whatever
<v Speaker 6>you wanted to do. And I was like yeah, pretty much.
<v Speaker 6>And they're like, man, I wish I could have grown
<v Speaker 6>up then I'm like, yeah, you do. It's pretty awesome.
<v Speaker 6>I mean we didn't appreciate.
<v Speaker 5>Maybe how good it was at the time, but looking back, yeah,
<v Speaker 5>I wouldn't trade places with any of those folks. You know.
<v Speaker 2>It also goes back. We've talked about this before, but
<v Speaker 2>we all listened to a common radio station, if you will, TV, right,
<v Speaker 2>MTV was our radio station for kids across America, and
<v Speaker 2>it was this That's how we learned our musical taste
<v Speaker 2>and that's why we all share a common experience.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah, yeah, I mean that's true. And the movies that
<v Speaker 5>you saw were the movies that would fit into the theater.
<v Speaker 5>You didn't have hundreds and hundreds of things to choose
<v Speaker 5>from from dozens and dozens of streaming services. You didn't.
<v Speaker 5>You didn't have that option. Everybody like HiT's the commonality,
<v Speaker 5>that's right. Everybody was listening to the same stuff. Everybody
<v Speaker 5>was watching the same stuff, and most people were going
<v Speaker 5>like going to the same concerts or going to the
<v Speaker 5>same places to hang out. Everybody had a mall to
<v Speaker 5>go to, everybody had a video arcade that they wanted
<v Speaker 5>to go hang out at, and just none of that
<v Speaker 5>exists like it did.
<v Speaker 2>Or a combination of like you watched Pour Some Sugar
<v Speaker 2>on Me on MTV before you jumped on your Hoffey bike,
<v Speaker 2>rode it to the mall, played the arcade, watched Roadhouse,
<v Speaker 2>and then rode home. You know, I mean it was
<v Speaker 2>That's just what a summer day was, you know.
<v Speaker 1>You know, as long as the porch light has not
<v Speaker 1>come on yet, you're free to roam and get into adventures.
<v Speaker 5>Right, that's right, that's right now.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, this is like the making of the shure
<v Speaker 1>that you can't be serious podcast. We're behind the we're
<v Speaker 1>behind the scenes here. So I got to ask. I
<v Speaker 1>got to ask questions like this, let's talk about off Mike.
<v Speaker 1>Have there ever been moments off Mike, be it during
<v Speaker 1>research or maybe you're recording or you're about to record
<v Speaker 1>where either one of you, like completely changed your opinion
<v Speaker 1>about a movie or an artist.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>I don't know if it was off Mike, but for sure.
<v Speaker 5>Yeah it was, it was. It was on Mike for
<v Speaker 5>me because I mean, that's kind of the beauty of
<v Speaker 5>what we're doing. Because a lot of these a lot
<v Speaker 5>of these albums, I would say, probably more so for
<v Speaker 5>me I've never listened to the whole album before. I
<v Speaker 5>wasn't a guy who went out and bought albums. Most
<v Speaker 5>of the time I was listening to singles. I was
<v Speaker 5>listening to what was on the radio. I was listening
<v Speaker 5>to what was on MTV. And so, I mean, the
<v Speaker 5>thing that springs to mind for me. God bless Amanda Janic.
<v Speaker 5>She called us out to do the cure, and I,
<v Speaker 5>for the last thirty years had said I freaking hate
<v Speaker 5>the Cure. I don't want to listen to any of
<v Speaker 5>their music. I can't stand it. But she was so
<v Speaker 5>incredibly persuasive in her plea for us to cover it
<v Speaker 5>that I was like, Okay, well let's do it. And
<v Speaker 5>I mean, I put the I put the album on.
<v Speaker 5>Listen to the first thirty seconds of the first song.
<v Speaker 5>I push pause. I called Jason, I'm like, holy cow,
<v Speaker 5>this is really good. Like I was like, what the heck? Like,
<v Speaker 5>how come I haven't heard of this stuff? And it
<v Speaker 5>was it goes back to that all I had heard
<v Speaker 5>were they're popular songs, which I still don't care for
<v Speaker 5>that much, but you go to their album tracks and
<v Speaker 5>it's incredible. So I went from I can't stand the
<v Speaker 5>cure to. I listened to them regularly.
<v Speaker 1>Now, I mean as a listener, I gotta be honest,
<v Speaker 1>like one of the things that is magical for me.
<v Speaker 1>You guys will hint it like hey, next next week,
<v Speaker 1>this is what we're doing, and I'll be like, well,
<v Speaker 1>let's it's not even a fair fight, like I'm not
<v Speaker 1>gonna that band. I've never liked that band, or I've
<v Speaker 1>never liked that movie. But then you guys start talking.
<v Speaker 1>You know, I'll point out last season you had the
<v Speaker 1>the Alantis Morrisse set versus Jewel versus No Doubt, the
<v Speaker 1>three way match up there, and I was like, there's
<v Speaker 1>I mean, yeah, No Doubt was amazing, is amazing, and
<v Speaker 1>Atlantis that's what that album's iconic. But Jewel doesn't have
<v Speaker 1>a chance. And then they listen to d just speak
<v Speaker 1>about her, her, the songs and the music so passionately.
<v Speaker 1>I was like, hold on, and you know, I hit
<v Speaker 1>pause because sometimes I'll do this. I imagine a lot
<v Speaker 1>of people do this with your show. I love what
<v Speaker 1>they're saying, but I got to hit pause because I
<v Speaker 1>now I want to hear the song or I want
<v Speaker 1>to hear the album, and I by gum I turned
<v Speaker 1>it on, I was like, this is incredible music. I
<v Speaker 1>was there. I don't know why I was not paying
<v Speaker 1>attention to Jewel when this happened. So, you know, you guys,
<v Speaker 1>you do a great job of moving the needle, as
<v Speaker 1>you say Jason, like, hey, if we can move the
<v Speaker 1>needle for someone, we've done our job. And I think
<v Speaker 1>you guys do that a lot. But I'm curious when
<v Speaker 1>you take into consideration all the final judgments, all the
<v Speaker 1>spiking of the footballs as it were, that you've delivered,
<v Speaker 1>have you ever looked back and said, hmm, I got
<v Speaker 1>that one wrong.
<v Speaker 2>For me, it goes back to which matchup was the closest, okay,
<v Speaker 2>And so if it's if it's fifty fifty or fifty
<v Speaker 2>one forty nine, you know I could go either way then.
<v Speaker 2>So the one that comes to mind for me is
<v Speaker 2>the George Michael Faith versus an Excess Kick album, where
<v Speaker 2>both of those were such powerhouses for eighty seven. Both
<v Speaker 2>are packed with hits, both very impactful special albums. To me,
<v Speaker 2>I loved both. It was about equal, and I think
<v Speaker 2>I could probably go either way. You know, you were
<v Speaker 2>asking what album maybe moved the needl the most for
<v Speaker 2>me over the years was probably Synchronicity. We started out
<v Speaker 2>with Synchronicity. I had not a lot of interest in it.
<v Speaker 2>It's kind of dry, dusty music to me.
<v Speaker 5>I can remember having the conversation. I was sitting in
<v Speaker 5>a school gym watching my kid play basketball, and he
<v Speaker 5>brought up Journey and I was like, oh, this is
<v Speaker 5>when the Police Synchronicity came out. And he's like, that's
<v Speaker 5>not even a fair competition. I was like, are you
<v Speaker 5>saying you like the Police better? And he's like, no,
<v Speaker 5>they're not. It's terrible. And I'm like, oh, we have
<v Speaker 5>to do that.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, we have to. In fact, I'm really I'm kind
<v Speaker 2>of anxious to do Ghosts in the Machine to go
<v Speaker 2>through it, you know, to make myself come through. And
<v Speaker 2>also when we did Nickelback, I love that well in

<v Speaker 5>get off that Creed concert. Just deciding to do that
<v Speaker 5>was wonderful. It was just happenstance that we decided because

<v Speaker 5>Creed got back together and started touring again. And the
<v Speaker 5>fact that happened, I was just like, well, good, this

<v Speaker 5>was the show we went to see. Yeah, it's the kickoff,
<v Speaker 5>and I was I was fantastically entertained by Creed. But
<v Speaker 5>just that that got us to see Three Doors Down,
<v Speaker 5>who opened for them, and I got to see Brad Arnold,
<v Speaker 5>and I feel like, even though I was a million
<v Speaker 5>miles away from him, got to know him on a
<v Speaker 5>personal level, because that was the way that he talked
<v Speaker 5>to the audience. It was like he was your friend
<v Speaker 5>and getting to getting to experience that, not knowing what
<v Speaker 5>he was going through at the time, heard about what
<v Speaker 5>he was going through later on, I was like, oh, no,
<v Speaker 5>I genuinely hope that because he was such a genuine
<v Speaker 5>and kind and faithful guy, I mean, inspiration, inspirational and
<v Speaker 5>too yeah for him to have left. I mean he's singing,
<v Speaker 5>he's singing a better song right now. But but it
<v Speaker 5>was I'm so glad that we just happened upon that
<v Speaker 5>kind of ye meeting. Yeah.

<v Speaker 5>Pyramanea Hysteria, I was like, Okay, I'm going to pretend
<v Speaker 5>like I just bought this album, put my big headphones
<v Speaker 5>on over my ears, crank it up, it blew it
<v Speaker 5>out of the water. Pyromania Blue Hysteria out of the
<v Speaker 5>water for me, and I was just like, Wow, I
<v Speaker 5>had no idea. So that was something that I had
<v Speaker 5>made a decision beforehand, but I still my final judgment.
<v Speaker 5>Still it was still Pyromania, And I don't think I
<v Speaker 5>would change my mind on anything that I picked. The
<v Speaker 5>great thing is the great thing is this we pick winner.
<v Speaker 5>I mean, there have been a couple of genuine landslides
<v Speaker 5>that we've had. I would say groundog Day versus Multiplicity,
<v Speaker 5>and that was just a matchup because of other factors,
<v Speaker 5>not because they're both winning movies. But in almost all circumstances,
<v Speaker 5>you're not gonna go wrong picking either one of these things.
<v Speaker 5>I mean, I'll say that Jason's wrong when he picks

<v Speaker 5>I mean there we picked. We pick good movies, we

<v Speaker 1>I think that's the biggest shock I've ever had, and
<v Speaker 1>I was so excited. I was like, he's never seen
<v Speaker 1>First Blood or Rambo two. He's gonna lose his mind.

<v Speaker 5>chopping at Dollar General in gold to Be, Oklahoma last
<v Speaker 5>month and this kid at the register who looked like
<v Speaker 5>he was maybe nineteen, maybe twenty, It is like, anybody
<v Speaker 5>ever told you you look like the Tulsking guy? And
<v Speaker 5>I was like, only for about the last forty two
<v Speaker 5>years that I was surprised that I was a movie
<v Speaker 5>over a sly movie. But that was a no brainer,
<v Speaker 5>that was an easy Yeah, Okay, he.
<v Speaker 2>Missed the moment better.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, ten year old D, I think has a different opinion.
<v Speaker 1>If he sees it, then I really do.
<v Speaker 5>But now ten year old D doesn't know what the
<v Speaker 5>heck he's talking about.
<v Speaker 1>That's As of this year, there are now over four
<v Speaker 1>and a half million registered podcasts, with only an estimated
<v Speaker 1>four hundred thousand actively producing new content. Can you share
<v Speaker 1>something about what it takes to create and run a
<v Speaker 1>successful podcast that listeners would probably never guess unless they
<v Speaker 1>tried to do it themselves. Because everyone thinks they can
<v Speaker 1>do it until you try to do it. What's something
<v Speaker 1>that you guys can give us, like, like, hey, this
<v Speaker 1>is what you better think about before you start.
<v Speaker 5>So I just looked at list of notes earlier this week.
<v Speaker 5>We're in the top one percent of those four and
<v Speaker 5>a half million podcasts, which means we're in the same
<v Speaker 5>category with forty five thousand other podcasts, which doesn't sound
<v Speaker 5>so impressive. But the answer to your question, as far
<v Speaker 5>as I'm concerned, we got blessed. We just what I
<v Speaker 5>wanted to do before we even knew that this was
<v Speaker 5>going to be a thing, was I was like, I
<v Speaker 5>want to do something with somebody that I genuinely enjoy
<v Speaker 5>being around and enjoy talking to. And the first guy
<v Speaker 5>that popped in my head was Jason Colvin. And so
<v Speaker 5>I was like, Okay, how do I find something Like
<v Speaker 5>I was thinking job stuff, you know, like some business
<v Speaker 5>enterprise something. How do I do something with Jason Colvin
<v Speaker 5>that maybe as successful as a business. And that was
<v Speaker 5>the only factor. I just want to do something with
<v Speaker 5>Jason Colvin. That was it. And that's all that I
<v Speaker 5>can say we had going for us, Like everything else
<v Speaker 5>is just just blessed, just dumb luck, just sunshining on
<v Speaker 5>the dog's butt. You know, it's just not anything that
<v Speaker 5>we necessarily did by design, but just we like being
<v Speaker 5>around each other. I think a few people in the
<v Speaker 5>world that I'd rather be around than this guy. We
<v Speaker 5>love talking to each other. We've been doing it for
<v Speaker 5>seven years on the air, and like seventeen years total,
<v Speaker 5>and I still ain't tired of it yet. So, I mean,
<v Speaker 5>that's so if you want, if you if you want
<v Speaker 5>the magic formula, find somebody you love being around and
<v Speaker 5>talking to and do something with them. Whether it's a
<v Speaker 5>podcast or eliminade. Stand, it doesn't matter. You know, if
<v Speaker 5>you're doing something with somebody that you truly love being
<v Speaker 5>around and love talking to, it'll be successful in the
<v Speaker 5>matter how many people listen to it.
<v Speaker 2>Personally, thank you very much. That makes me feel very special.

<v Speaker 2>do because we like hanging out, we like having fun,

<v Speaker 5>So, yeah, seventeen years, I can't think of one angry
<v Speaker 5>word that I've said to this guy or that he
<v Speaker 5>said to me. And we obviously have been doing a
<v Speaker 5>lot of stuff together for a lot.
<v Speaker 1>That's special. Yeah, but surely you can't be serious. Podcasts

<v Speaker 5>there and see hidden tracks play. And he's been a
<v Speaker 5>close with us, I mean, and has helped my kid
<v Speaker 5>with a ticket in Louisiana. It's just it's just but
