Marguerite also dishes on her first job, The Wonder Years, and why getting cast on your favorite show isn’t always a blessing.

Plus, find out what nostalgic gifts Danielle, Rider and Will got each other for Christmas…
And the gang finally takes on the task of assigning TMNT characters.

Speaker 1: So we all exchange our Christmas gifts only only a monthly a month late, but that we wanted to make sure we were in person to exchange. So we got together with our spouses and we exchange our our Christmas gifts. First of all, I'd like to point out before I got in there, I thought we were doing more gag gifts and actually giving each other gifts. So I was the guy with the cheap ones like oh hey, and writer, I was like, hey, here's something really nice, and I was like, oh, mine's funny. Um so, but a lot of our gifts are are references that our listeners will actually get. Yeah, yeah, actually, can I I have right outside the door here, Danielle Okay, okay, yeah, okay, good. So Danielle very nicely got both Rider and I original Thomas Guides. Yeah. Were then open to the Disney Channel to Disney the Disney Disney studio thing we are there, uh and framed for us. It was just really really cool and they're like authentically from their nineties. Um Thomas Guides. I found Disney Studios where it is, I put a little gold star above it, and I said, we were here, uh, and I have one I'm looking at it right now and now, so all three of us have have that little memory. I don't know it was Alex and I really bonded. Writer's wife and I both apparently have the same condition, which is the inability to sleep well, or I guess you could reframe it another way, which is the ability to come up with great ideas in the middle of the process at night. My wife has been known to solve script problems at three in the morning, and she jumps up and writes them down, and then that becomes how she writes her you know, finishes a script consistently. It's amazing. That's how I've solved directing problems. When I go to bed and there's a blocking issue, or I've read the script, you know, the changes have come out, and now there's a blocking problem, and I'm like, oh my gosh, we're gonna have to change that blocking. I have no idea how am I going to get this person over there. I'll go to sleep in At two thirty in the morning, I up and I'm like, I'll just have a renenter from the closet there I go. I figured it out. Oh my god. When I'm directing, I dream I have my normal dreams, but then I'm directing them, so I'll be like setting up the shots so it'll be like, you know, I'm dreaming that I'm in school without my pants on or whenever the normal like bad dream is. But then I'll be like, I should probably get this from another anger, and that's not going to edit with this very well, so I should probably. And it's like I'm and it's like this whole other part of my brain kicks in and I'm like aware that I'm dreaming, but I'm filming it off. I'm gonna have to get a pickup shot of those pants. Yeah, well that's that's Les being the pants at home. And now, really, you know there's a Lucid you can get Lucid dream machines. So what are the light it does? Yeah, in the light in corner of your eye, and you see the light in your dream. That wakes you up in your dream and then you're in control of your dream. There were apparently studies done it was either Harvard or year Yale where they did these kind of things where the students could actually then wake up in their dream and study. So while they're asleep, they were still taking in information for their their their tests and things like that a waste, but we just want to fly you want to do in your dreams. I'd also like to point out another gift though, since we were talking about gifts, and it's on my wall behind me here it is my if you can read it, it's my super Phil Freedel cape uh Phil Freedel missbelt. Of course, as I always said, Daniel got me this. It's got the arm bracers and the the I got because you have it's got to be don't know who it is, so obviously keep my by secret identity. I've got my my mask on as well, and it is on my wall ready to grab. If the Friedel sign sign comes over l A, yeah, then I will get into my super I mean or whoever super fil Freedel is right, don't give it a mild mannered will Fredell by day. Well that was another gift idea. So I got them the maps and and then I was like, well, well, actually what it started was I have these great gag gift ideas. We had talked about writer always getting a leather journal and a scar for a beanie, and so I had this idea for writer's gag gift and in the middle of the night again one of those things that woke me up. And what I really wanted was a dishwashing cape, because you said you love to wash dishes. So I wanted a terry cloth cape with hand pockets so that you could wear a cape and wash the dishes. And I presented the idea to producer Jensen car husband of the d asked, and I was like, do you know, well this cake, that's what I was hoping. I said, do you know where I could have this made? And he looked at me like what is wrong with it? Was like, I've seen that look. I've seen that look from my wife. I know that look. And I was like, okay, okay, you're right. You know what, also, you have a little bit on your plate. I'll take this somewhere else. I'll order the cape, I'll get the customer. I'll just do this other cape. So anyway, well, yeah, we had a great time and I absolutely love it. So anyway, welcome to Pod meets World. I'm Danielle Fishal, I'm right or Strong, and I'm Phil Freedel super super super, Oh my gosh. So before we jump into this episode, I have we have a little bit of a correction, possibly to make we very casually mentioned in a previous Pod Meets World episode that the Boy Meets World House had most likely been torn down. I said that, My bad, My bad. Yeah, it's okay. People make mistakes. We didn't know, writer, and I didn't drive by it to confirm. So it appears that the Boy Meets World House has not been torn down. It is alive and thriving and doing well, and you yourself can rent it if you wanted to. So it is apparently up for rent on Airbnb, and we have some devoted listeners who are going to stay there. So I swear it was gone. I drove by and I was devastated. So they must have changed. And from what I've now heard, there's like a big fancy from and so they changed it enough to where you used to drive by and it just was right there on the road there from and it was just right there. And so there's a very well known recording studio five yards from it. And I was there, you know, doing an animated series, and drove by and went, oh my god, it's gone, and called these two that by me Turtle, the house is gone. Apparently that is not correct. Yeah, I think what you said is right. I think they put up a big gate. There's a bunch of hedges and you can no longer see it from the streets, so it looks as though it's been torn down, but it is still there. So it probably did that because they were getting annoyed by people taking phone yes, or like, because that's what I've heard about the Goonies House in Ashland, Oregon and um ah no, um Storia and then um then the full House Christmas story House. The Christmas story House apparently is like inundated with people all the time. Yeah, but the Christmas story House is actually a museum. My brother has been there. So you go through and they've made it look exactly like it did during the film. Yeah. So the big lamp, the big red lamp like this one is actually there and all that stuff breaking. Bad house has people throwing pizzas on the roof. Oh you're kidding, they hate it. How could you not? What a waste mean? Just pizza from Get Get the pizzas? Yeah, my head goes to what a waste of pizza? Yeah, Well, very excited about our guest today. Another person y'all have harassed in the most loving of ways on Instagram and telling us that we need to have her on. Marguerite Moreau is a beloved actress best known for her turns as Connie Moreau from The Mighty Ducks, which her last They just gave her the same last name. That's pretty yeah, Jason mars I didn't realize that happened so often. I think if you have an easy to pronounce name, it's a lot easier. If you're a Marsden or Moreau, you're a Fredel or a Fridle, it's never it's never gonna happen for you. Although honestly, August Aggie was Aggie on Girl Meets World and that's what you know. Um So she's from the Mighty Ducks franchise and eventually as the iconic Katie and Wet Hot American Summer, and as both a child and adult actress. She has been working NonStop on TV, from The o C to Madman, to Parenthood to Grey's Anatomy to Shameless. The list goes on and on, and then there's my favorite. She starred alongside Aaliyah in the movie Queen of the Damned in two thousand two, but today we are focused on Gail and then Rebecca, the two different characters. She played a different name. She had a different name in the first one, and that's what I said. I was like, that doesn't make any sense. I have a feeling her first name wasn't said in the first episode, and so they just looked at it like, no one will know, they'll think she's just playing the same character. But she was in two episodes of Boy Meets World second season and left quite a mark on both the show and a young Wilfred l. So let's please welcome Marguerite Moreau. Hello, Hello, hi everyone. So I said when I was giving your introduction before you joined us in the podcast, but I did not realize that in the two episodes of Boy Meats World you did you were credited with two different character names. It's exciting, okay, And so did you did you audition for one character name and then like they were just like, never mind, now next week we're going to give you a different character. How did that process happen? From what I remember, maybe I auditioned for the Rebecca character and they said, oh, there's two episodes. Wow, But then that wouldn't make sense because of the only one character. So my memory is failing me already. I imagine I did the first one and they were like, oh, this this can work nicely, let's keep her on as this character. I don't know why they wouldn't keep it the same name. I know it's so interesting, and until Danielle said it, none of us knew that you had two names for the two episodes. That might be a first in Boy Meat World history, especially back to back episode. You think they were back to back. Maybe I don't back to back. The amount of like casting changes, name changes, character stuff that you know we got away with in the lack of the Land of no continuity. Uh, I don't know. I'm not that true. You know that's absolutely true. Yeah, but you will insistent in its inconsistency valid point, especially our show. So before before we jump into the boy Meets World characters and all of that, can you tell us your origin story to Hollywood and how you got into acting. Oh, I had an older cousin that I wanted to be like, who had all the fancy dresses and all the I was in all the tomboys stuff. So I think because she was sort of interested in getting into it, I was too and um and then of course, like when you get to be twelve or thirteen, your parents get you or my mom got me like seventeen magazine and I was like, oh, yes, Paris sounds right. I live in Inland Empire ten like Cindy Crawford. I'm going to be, you know, a model who does hook tour. But I'm also going to be the valedictorian. This is my clear career path. And I actually fell into acting, um and was like, oh, don't give me any lines. This is like, you know, I'm the most insecure. Uh. And but what I found was because I loved TV and movies so much is that I started to learn how to connect and make friends that way. And I it's so deeply. It just made me so happy that I just kept doing it as a practice because it taught me about people. So that's kind of how I just kept going from job to job. It wasn't I mean, I thought I was going into politics after I realized that I was staying five too forever. Oh my gosh, wait, So how old were you when you started acting? Um? I got my first job when I was thirte Like my first film job. I did modeling and stuff before that, yes, but not a flute. What was your what was your first job when you were the Wonder Years? Wow? Okay, we'll come back to that, Okay. So another one of your first jobs was the torkle Sens which originally was known as Almost Home, And that show has come up a few times on our podcast with Jason Marsden, Leon Norris, and the late Brittany Murphy, but most importantly was executive produced by Michael Jacobs. Is that how you really? Girl? I was not paying attention then, but it's real good to you know, go into that audition office, like I remember the Michael Jacobs like, uh all back room. Yeah, and it always felt like, oh, this feels really good in here. Yeah. Yeah, that was nice. Wow. So wait were you on Torkleson's or Almost Home? Almost Home? Okay? So the second one? I think it started Torkleson's and then morphed into Almost Home. Yeah. It was great, but it was like there was similar kind of parent dynamics I think, right as on yours. I think so. I mean again, it was it was very kind of yeah, nineties sitcom nineties Michael Jacob sitcom they were all kind of had that similar type of feel. Was your experience on Wonder Year is not good? It was complicated? Um? I was. It was my favorite show and it was my first job. So the combination of me crashing into these people in real life was so exciting. And I had auditioned for a huge recurring to play the French um the French foreign exchange to and love was at the callback. I remember that because you had the most amazing gears on ever from that, Yeah, the note, they came out and they talked to my mom and they said can she just and I'm like just thirteen, and they said could could she bring a little more heat? My mom was like like, oh my god. You know the girl who got it I think was like twenty one and it was more appropriate, right, And so they gave me this walk on co star part after doing that, just to start me out night. Um. I just knew that there was always something about like I knew what he was. I mean, I was thirteen. I proctually thought I was an adult, but that's not translating in your brain in a way that you can communicate at that age. And then you know on set there was a little bit of the power dynamics of the kids on set and me not really understanding when things were jokes about like let's go out later, baby, and me being like do they mean that? Like I u uh, and then just being scared that I was like doing it wrong or you know, it was my first my first kick. So but it was definitely like, oh, didn't ruin? Did it ruin the wonder years for you know? Okay? Good? That love the show till Yeah, So it wasn't like that. It's just like kind of started to rethink about things in the last couple of years ago. Oh yeah, not being comfortable and feeling safe and having it be about sexual dynamics is complicated for kids. Yeah she didn't. You guys have been talking about that because I always loved well, sometimes, like you said, it's fun and sometimes it's very confusing. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, God, I wish I wish it wasn't such a perfect place to transition into our episode. Unfortunately. Well, I mean it is because we were what we were talking about. I mean, just I remember I distinctly remember that week, and I don't. I mean, I remember certain things about the show. Um, but we're all kind of rewatching the show for the first time in a while, and there's a whole lot that I've forgotten, but I remember some very specific things about that week. Um. One of them, which I've talked about at nauseam, was that you and I got along very well, and I remember having a really I was I was very comfortable with you. I thought we had a good dynamic. But I also remember it was kind of instantly thrown into making out and then us being on the yeah, being on the bed, and then the kind of everyone surrounding us. And do you remember. I don't even want to I won't tell you my side again because I remember. Do you remember the everything that kind of went down in that I don't even know how to say. It's so uncomfortable. Do you remember? Do you remember the blocking for the making out scene and how that came about? Yeah, But in a loose way, I think that, Um, I was excited to do the part and we got along so well, so I felt like you and I were there with all these grown men, and maybe there were some females there, but I don't remember, and we were just doing our best to be grown up about it. And I was also probably a little excited, um, but also like, I hope this is I'm doing this right. Why can't we just figure this out? Like we're smart, like we'll have we have chemistry, we'll get it. And it's funny in in thinking about it, I don't necessarily know what they ended up by having you kind of like try to roll over me if it really added to the story. I thought it looked the same as the macking in the hallways, you know. Um, But but I just remember that that it's sort of like how I remember it well as sort of my reward for that awkwardness is that we got to have fun kisses. Okay, I got through that, and now this is fun, and so I have very fond memories of it, and so I probably just blocked out anything that felt weird. Sure, well that's good. I mean, that's a good thing. And again I don't I don't have bad memories of it. Frankly, it which I think that time it was an awkward, yeah, thing to do with a bunch of grown, grown strangers for me, and to power dynamic of being the guests and not being able to Bengo. That's what That's what, to Will's credit has been actually the thing that that made him re look back at it with different eyes, which is, you know, we all experienced the things through our lenses and now being able to watch it as an adult and seeing it and thinking about, Yeah, I remember thinking that was weird. What must that have been like for her as the guest star, as the you know, if Will was uncomfortable with the job security that he had and with being a male, and I was like what you had? I was like, because it's like you were being polite and whatnot? Sorry much he was uncomfortable. Okay, So well, I mean, yeah, well there's I mean, there's always you go through the layers of nerves. It's it's so strange, so you go through the human layer of I was never popular in high school. So the idea that I would sit there and get to kiss a pretty girl, I mean there's a part of you as just a boy that it's fun and it's we did get along and we had a good time, So that part was was comfortable. I didn't really have a problem with that. Um and then but as you said, it was as actors, then it was kind of like, all right, well, let us work it out. Let us figure out how we're going to do this and kind of get to it. But you know, we're young. It was you were a guest star. I was just starting second season. I still wasn't speaking up about no, we got this, like that wasn't part of the vernacular yet. Um, so yeah, it's you know, you know, if I would have had the words, because I mean, yeah, I mean in the other stuff that I had done that it was kissing before that. I mean, I think for my d ducks it said that there was a kiss at the end for me and my little guy that I was with the whole time, holding hands, and I was thinking about that kiss for the whole six months of the shoot. Right, Oh, it's going to be this moment, this very grown up moment where we're gonna kiss, and it was like two kids bouncing into each other. For years, I was ashamed of this grown up kiss I got to do because nobody said, you know, that's adorable. These are children and it's a chill, childish moment. Like I didn't understand that you and I were We're supposed to be like kids making mistakes. You know, No, I agree, it was it was I'm glad it was you because that certainly made it far more comfortable. And I remember we had we talked about it and you know, all that stuff kind of going into it. And again, at the time, it it was just work. You know, it was enjoyable, but it was still just work. Um. It's not again until later that you look back where you kind of you look at the whole situation as an adult. Yeah, and you kind of say, because then and I put myself in an adult Now that I am an adult, I put myself in the shoes of the adults there, and I try to imagine myself standing around with a bunch of my friends watching to seventeen or eighteen year olds making out on a bed and trying to do wrecked them into how to make it look like it's going to go. And that's where I get creeped out, where I kind of you know, that's where I look back at it and I'm I don't know, maybe it's because I'm an empathetic person where I put myself that's weird. Yeah, that's weird. Weird, kid, it's really and it was of the time in terms of us all accepting. I don't want to put words in your mouth that this was just how it was. You know, it's true, and I think part of our our comfort in that moment, or that we weren't even realizing we were uncomfortable. I mean, it took me a long time to to realize a lot of that stuff was maybe a little questionable at times, but handled with as much grace as as it could be given the time. I mean, I asked my mom actually last night, I was like, hey, are you remembering anything? Um, And She's like, I just have a blank like the one you're almost in You're almost in college, and and I but it was a weird day for me too, because I remember getting the part, and right before I went to set my very first day for rehearsal, I said goodbye to my high school sweetheart who was going to college because he was a year older. And I remember thinking, and I'm sitting in the stands sound stage in the dark, and I'm like looking at my phone or like, oh, I can't believe is it is this bad? Like I'm I got to kiss him in the morning and now I'm kissing Will and this is a great job. Now it's work. I can't believe this. So I think that, however, it was handled from my memory. I thought, I I wasn't kissing someone every week, so this is this was a little special, right, I can't do you remember? This is the thing I couldn't remember. Were we kissing during rehearsals as well? Yeah? Okay, yeah, yeah, that's what I remember. I remember whenever we had like multiple makeout scenes, we would do it from day one because we had to do it for the run through. Um, so we wouldn't we wouldn't be faking it. We would be And I too, I'm thinking about how Carrie Russell said tongue to you. Yeah, I mean, nobody ever told me that you're not supposed to use tongue. And I was on Mad Ben and John Slattery and I are kissing and his tongue is like in his mouth, and I'm like, this is the weirdest kissing forever. And so between takes like two in the morning, I'm like, hey, I'm the next one. What if we like just like really kiss, Like where's your tongue? I mean, you think I would have a little bit more skill than kidding creed into the secordinator. He's like, oh, oh, you don't want to do like a TV kiss and I was like, this isn't like the shock on my face, Like, how many here don't use what's a TV kiss? Isn't that just a regular kiss they film? That's what I thought. It looks good, sonny funny. Have you used an intimacy coach on recent jobs? Um? I did use one, and because I'm so old school, it felt a little weird at first, mostly because I don't like that feeling where the if the guy is newer to work, that they're they have jumped away is super fast. I'm like, there isn't like they're gonna offend you, and You're like, whoa, Let's just keep the keep the vibe chill. So I think it will be more comfortable the more I use them, but I super appreciate that they're there. I've definitely done plays and things too where I was like, no, no, no, no, no, this is I'm in over my head with older people. I don't know how to advocate for myself but also keep the integrity of the material. And we don't we don't have to harp on this for the entire episode, obviously, but I'm very glad it was you. I remember being very very comfortable with you. Um. The whole time, and uh, you know, it got as writer and Daniel were saying the last episode, it got the point across for what it was supposed to have happened. I think I agree with you where I don't think you needed the leg going over as if I was trying to get on top of you. I think it the lot I think being I think lying down, just lying down on a bed takes it to another level than kissing in a hallway. That's all you needed. Also parents bedroom right, which again also for the whole way up the stairs, is so suggestive and so driving the scene less he is there with one intention and she is gonna go get on it right away. Yes, And that leads me to my next question about it, because it has become, you know, kind of I don't know that I would call it a debate, but it has become like a focal point of conversation, the discussion we had where you are right, your character is driving this. Rebecca wants him upstairs. I'm getting that tour and we find out later he says that you pat the bed, She pats the bed like you know, come here. And then after Corey busts in on you guys, there's a real like attitude shift and a real like totally different feeling and energy that your character has when you're getting out of there. It's it it you had been the driving force behind it. Do you remember the discussions, the notes, the like what there was? Was it a performance choice? Was it something? Was it something you were noted about? Do you what are your memories about that? I honestly don't remember any specific notes, but I know my my work at the time and the types of rules I was getting and the things that I leaned into as an actress that um that they all sort of I think that I was playing it. Um, I don't want to get in trouble. I know I was student something wrong, almost like a bad girl a little bit, but a safe thing, right, you know. And And that was as far as I could understand why it would have been written that I'm telling him, I'm never like. We never had anything after that. I think that was like, that was the thing we got. Wait, that was the thing that we made it a little weird for me? Was what. It's not so much the I get the I was caught and I'm glad it didn't go any farther than it should have. I was I'm going too fast. Totally understand that the never wanting to see Eric again is the thing where it's like, wow, that's that's very abrupt to be like and we're done forever, Like wow, okay, that was the one. Yeah, that was the one that threw me. But maybe maybe she's she's gotten caught before this was. I love how you're still going into the back story, Marguerite, You're still I'm still work shopping this character. I've definitely woken up five years later and been like, oh, that's how I should have said that line. Oh yeah, they do it all that's time. Oh man. Again. They always make fun of me for constantly referencing mash, but it's a reference. Alan Alda and Wayne Rodgers were famous for re rehearsing scenes that had already aired. Oh my god, So they they had shot it already, it had aired, and they looked at each other and went, this is how we should have done it, and literally gone back and reblocked the scene on their own. Oh man. Um so just kind of brilliant. But yeah, I get that. I do that too. We always do that too, Like, oh that's how I would have done that performance. So to prep for this interview, we asked you to watch the episode again. What did you think watching it thirty years later? Have you seen it since you did it originally before now or no? I mean as a kid, I think it was so excited. I probably watched it eight hundred times, and I knew all the dialogue, but I didn't remember it. It's just as it was happening. I was like, I gotta watch some other episodes so I have some context because this one. And of course, you know, you guys have mentioned a hair on this podcast, and I was just like, that is a sheet hair? Your hair? I know I mentioned it when I was like you walked in, I was like, her hair, your hair, My god. It was like everybody's hair. The hair was the hair show. I I we really had. Yeah, it was quite a hair obsession. I think that I thought, Um, I was surprised that my character is so angry, and I saw some of my young acting that I mentioned a few minutes ago, like acting like my actually my little sister who's got a little more bite than I do. And and then I was always very fixated on the choice of the white tights as a young girl, it was like white tights, huh, you know. Um, and then just like I would be like staring at Corey's cherubic face and how he's just got perfect skin. And then your cops scene. I really enjoyed the flirting with the tea with the shooters. I've ever seen but shot I thought that was inappropriate. We talked about that felt very It felt very not not cool male gaze I get, but also and boy gays. But but I do like, um, I do just feel that like the relationships all felt very clear to me of who you guys were and what you guys meant to each other and who the parents were. Um. Having seen it so many times, uh and then having the fresh watch, it's like this how it all comes together for the family to have that talk and that this episode about big feelings as we call them, now gets to have a pointed episode where people are making mistakes and trying to make steps instead of like it being separate like hey, let's have the sex stock Oh dad, I already know. Okay, good, we did it. I think got a little bit. They used jokes, humor and mistakes to uh tackle something that that maybe everyone to watch together that would then spark conversation in maybe different ways that I mean definitely thinking of out my unt. He's not all enough to work yet, he's only seven. It's helpful to see it modeled, you know. Yeah, so I really thought it holds up. It's great. Yeah. We watched our entire first season and then jumped right into the second season, and there was such a shift between the two that I think we were still trying to shake off the fog a little bit as we were watching some of the first episodes. Um and then again the stories just kind of came back into my head, but I just remember them. We're still very much trying to find some of our characters, so they're kind of throwing everything at the wall at this point to see what sticks. So we were talking about this was one of the first episodes where Eric is with girls and also dumb. He's done that a couple of times, so it's like, which which way are we going with this? Which way did we end up going? Did you tell me? Because I I, oh, yeah, Eric, Eric ended up well after his second PhD know, he's he ended up. He's the dumbest character r TV. He's up there. Hi, I'm Christine Taylor, and I'm here with my co host David Lasher. We have a podcast called Hey Dude the Nineties called and David, why don't you tell us who our guests are? This week? From a film that I did right in the middle of the nineties called White Squall, Scott Wolf, Ryan, Phillip Bay, Jeremy Sisto, Balthas our Getty, Ethan Embry, and the dude himself Jeff Bridges recount that insane shoot that was six months all over the world. But the the interview for Hey Dude the Nineties called White Squall Cast Reunion is epic. Listen to Hey Dude the Nineties called on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts now. From an acting standpoint, did you approach Gail any differently than you approach Rebecca? You know I'm kidding, but I do think talking about this shift from season one to season two, because we have gotten a few, not a few dozens of emails regarding our feelings um of going from the warm, cozy blanket of season one, where it was maybe a little more sweet and family oriented, into the um maybe sexually more sexually charged teenage angsty second season, and I think, um, and some of those people are saying, I agree with you. It also feels that same way to me, And I also felt that way when I was watching as a kid. And then there are there's the other side that goes, well, I can see what you're saying, but also this is such a breath of fresh air for me when I was a tween, because that is what was going on in my school, that is what was going on in my life, that is what was going on with my friends. And I think we as a cast, certainly the three of us here. I'm not going to speak for anybody else, but um, Writer, Will and I were very sheltered children. Even though we were child actors, and even though we you know, Will lived out here on his own, and Writer a lot of times was living out here on his own. Once he hit fifteen, he was basically living on his own. We were still pretty sheltered kids. And I don't think I don't think that's what was going on in our lives. And I think we felt the jump from season one to season two, but that doesn't mean it's obviously I'm recognizing that that wasn't how a lot of twelve year olds were feeling a lot of twelve year olds were feeling exactly what we're seeing in season two. Yea, yeah, I mean, I'm I'm gonna step out a little bit. I think I was definitely pretty. I don't I wouldn't say it was sheltered because I was pretty, Like I already had a girlfriend, a pretty serious girlfriend by season one. Season two, we're still together. Uh. So I I think this is and I've I've been reevaluating our reevaluation too, um because I you know, I think that that feedback is accurate. I think that a lot of that energy is part of you know, that sexual energy and fear and anxiety about needing to to to go, you know, be partnered out or have a girlfriend or whatever. That is the way a lot of thirteen year olds feel. And I think that I think that we're just we're super sensitive because we are watching it the way we are. You know. As for me, like a grown up with my son, having gone from season one to season two, it fuels really drying. But I'm I'm reevaluating. Especially last night I was watching White Lotus uh with my wife, and I realized, you know, like it's it's a great show. And then I was realizing, like, god, this show is sexy, you know, like and then that that's part of the fun. I was like, I kind of like watching hot people on beaches and like I was just like and I was like, that's okay, right, But it was so funny because I've been you know, I've been so critical of like boy Meets World, but then here I was watching White Lotus and I was like, Oh, that's that's part of the fun. I'm here with my wife, We're watching people get naked and beaches and vacation and beautiful spots. I was like, that's sexy. That's cool. And I think that there's something to be said for a tween version of that too, that um, you know, I feel like maybe i've i you know, I've sort of taken for granted that that is part of the pleasure principle of Boy Meat's World is that it's going to reflect that that, you know, those things that when you're thirteen are maybe kind of exciting, like are you gonna kiss a girl or you know. So, I don't know, I've been thinking a lot about how maybe you know, we're just super sensitive because it's our childhood that we're seeing these awkward moments behind the scenes, you know, um, potentially. It's also again that that going directly from season one to season two was our problem because again, the if you're if you're even looking at your life, your summer from sixth grade to seventh grade, or the summer from eighth grade to freshman year in high school, there are massive changes. I mean, you're a different person in those three months when you go back to school, um so, and it is very sexual and there were kids having sex and hooking up even freshman sophomore year, and so it was very real. Again, had we taken that same break and jumped into season two, I think it would have been less jarring. We went right from a black and white movie right till we woke up in oz and so it was it was just what the hell is going on? What are these colors? It's freaking me out. And that's why I think we're bringing it back to earth a little bit. So, yeah, I don't. It wasn't the subject It's not the subject matter for me so much as we're looking at our personal experiences of how they were capturing some of that subject matter. Well, that's the what question I have from my understanding. A lot of times writers right to the actors after a little bit of time. And so I was wondering if you felt that they wrote to you while maybe you weren't even aware that they were seeing you blossom as as young adults, and threw that in and said, oh, I think we can put some of this in there, and and kind of do you feel that they were following you at all? With that? I think so, I mean, I think, and I think that's part of the craziness of second season is that, you know, I feel like I was actually pretty mature and like Ben still seems like a child to me, you know, like even just physically, like I'm towering over him still. Uh. And I you know, I can tell I'm getting into my adolescence in a way that Ben's not quite there yet. Maybe he'll be there by the end of second season, but just physically you can see. And I know, personally, I think that's what was happening to Like, I think personally, like I said, I had a girlfriend that the writers probably knew that I was probably talking about my girlfriend all the time. I was making up with my girlfriend all the time, you know, like yeah, um, yeah, yeah. In fact, I remember bringing her to the Christmas party uh for um our first season. We had a great Christmas party and it was one of the coolest things. She and I ran off because the there was do you guys remember on the Disney lot there was an old New York Square Do you remember this? It was like it was from Newsies. I had actually auditioned for News. He's on the Square. It was an old New York block with a with like it was just like a series of abilities and made it look like nineteen thirties New York and um, and it had been decorated with Christmas lights for Christmas and I knew that, so I grabbed him. We snuck away from the boy Beat World Christmas party to go make out on this like old New York. It was like super romantic, like Hollywood moment, and I was like, gout. I was only and then I was doing that, so yeah, it was definitely happening in real life. Ben was my first kiss. That was my first The episode where I kissed Ben against the locker was my first kiss. And then you know, I had I had a boyfriend, but like we were not like hot and heavy, make it out all over the place. But yes, I had kissed other people. And then going into second season, it was like we had that summer break. I went to my regular school and no one was like making out against the locker at my regular school. And then I just remember being like, is this what other high schools are doing? Like I did not know. I did not know there would be just teenagers. I was also still in junior high. I had the very traditional six, seventh and eighth grade, so I was now in seventh grade. I was one of the older kids almost in my group, not you know, oh there's going to be seniors next door or in the same hallway as me. So I know. I felt very much like is this what the rest of the world is doing? And I am just not there yet, Like I I do remember feeling very behind. And did you have kissing parties? We had kissing parties in like the six seventh and spin the bottle and stuff. No, it was it wasn't like spin the bottle. It was more you know, well, every everybody already knows this. Buy cigarettes and go hang out in the woods because it's Connecticut. Thank you. Sorry, you have to roll your own cigarettes. Uh no, we would. We would. You go and you would A bunch of us were smokers, all of us essentially, and you go and the girls would kiss the girls and they you know that kind of that was seven grade and there wasn't I wasn't as advanced, So I would hear stories about people making out. How do smoke or how does smoking and the kissing? How is this connected? Because it was adult. We thought it was like adults adult sweet smoke our cigarettes and you you know, you try to hook up like, oh did she hook up with her? Which meant because nothing tastes better when you're kissing something. Both doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, it doesn't matter, it's still it's got to hate it because it's no. I'm with you, I remember. I mean I definitely truth or dare spin the bottle? Just like all that stuff. I mean I would go back even I mean that started in grade school for me, Like that was like sheltered then No, yeah, no, Danielle, we know yours. We know mine was Carrie Russell Marguerite first on screen kiss. Who was it? Oh Mighty Ducks, right, I guess so, yeah, Garrett Henson and Mighty Ducks when the two little hockey players just crashed into each other and it fell over. Okay, First, that's great writer. First on screen kiss, I don't know. I don't know who your first on screen kiss with. It had to have been on Boy Meats World, right, it must have been Boy Meats World. But it hasn't happened yet. I haven't kissed anybody on the shore, or have I was in the locker the first episode of the First Day. See you actually kissing? She just grabs me and pulls me. Yeah, so I guess it's coming up, but we'll see. Really my first because yes something no girlfriend and summertime switch, which I did over the summer. I'm trying nothing at home improvement. When you're on a home improvement or any of that kind of't think. So, No, I was, I had I was. Jessica was my girlfriend on that? Or Julia Julia Child Julia show that you were on That's not no. But the the pilot for Julie was about me getting in trouble for having grabbed a girl's breast at school. That was the pilot, which was super interested and it was it was very well done. It was the whole thing about you know, but you don't see it or anything. You just hear about it. I get in trouble. That was the pilot the show that that that pilot never aired. They ended up reshooting and reconfiguring the whole show. But it was an amazing scene with me and Julie Andrews where she's my mom and I had done it on a dare, like at school. Somebody dared me to grab some older girl and she puts me on the spot and says show me, and I'm like, you're my mom. She's like exactly, and it's like this great scene where like Julie Andrews, it was hysterical. Um, so I had done that. I mean, but you know, here's what I was thinking about. Actually, while we were talking earlier. I do remember in acting classes, and I don't know if you guys actually took many acting classes, but I remember in acting classes as a tween, even as a twelve or thirteen year old, it would regularly people would would get scenes where they were supposed to be kissing. And it was kind of a thing that by the age of like thirteen, if you were in an acting class, you would kiss for the scene. No one else had this experience. All right, well, I just remember that sense of was your acting class in the back of a van? Are they smoking? This would have been Young Actors Space. This would have been in Berkeley, I was taking an acting class. But no, it didn't have. But I mean, I don't think I didn't. And when I was in Berkeley because I was on like eleven or twelve. But I remember older kids in like plays or acting or like presenting a scene, they would commit and you would, you know, have to kiss. Then you think your first kid, the first kiss you see when we see you on boy is going to be probably my first. I've never thought about it. That's so weird. We'll have to nail it down when it happens. Marguerite, You've been in so many things over the years. Do people ever still recognize you from Boy Meat's World? Absolutely? Really? Absolutely. In fact, I just did my first con a couple of months ago and my agent like printed out a picture and was like this, and I was like this really and He's like, watch, totally totally moved. Oh god, I can't remember I was wearing the white tights. Yeah, probably something in the kitchen. I bet something from standing in the kitchen. I think it's like a picture of like you, me, Mama, and whoever was the other person in it. Well, I will see one last thing about this if it's okay. Um. Just thinking about an intimacy coordinator and about how exciting it is to be a young person, or it was for me a young person to be having all these feelings but also being a professional, like, oh I get to do some kissing. I get to practice like in a very safe way. I won't be rejected learning and oh is this how it works? You know, almost like mirroring what the boys are trying to figure out in the show. But that also it was very easy for me to forget it was a job. Like in Mighty Ducks. I think I was shooting one of my first scenes where I'm actually talking, and my mom was like, so you're shooting today, do you know your lines? And I was like huh. I like had looked up out of the scrum of twelve boys who were I was the tallest and getting the attention and be like are what are we? Is this what's happening? I have to I have to memory. Isn't summer camp. We're not just hanging out right, and and so um, I think it's normal to have those feelings and be excited and get a little bit of confused. So to contextualize the intimacy I think would be helpful, because I'm sure a lot of habits that I formed because I didn't really talk and you just know, and you just you know, they simplify everything on television and you don't really go through, like I didn't go through the steps of like getting to know someone as much, you know, like verbally, like I didn't. I wasn't making out at parties with everybody because it wouldn't wasn't that confident, But it could have helped me develop more of a a real connection with the person rather than like we've been looking at each other for like three months. Somebody cast you as my girlfriend. Yeah, yeah, exactly right, as the three of us all did making uh. I mean, I was on all three years of Girl MEA's World. But writer came back and and reprised his role for a little bit on Girl MEA's World, and so did Well. You have also recently returned to Mighty Ducks and you're back with a Disney Plus reboot. What has it been like getting back on the ice after, you know, thirty years being away from it. I wish I was better, but I also kind of get confused. You know, I spent years in that hockey equipment, so I would just put everything on and sit down and on the bench and immediately revert to a twelve year old forget I'm supposed to be playing this mature woman with things because I had just lulling my head and screaming up for somebody. It's a great sense memory. It's such a special thing. You know. You guys know you went through your young adulthood with with your castmates, and so they all know you in a way. Whether you guys are best friends or just keep cabs on each other or not, you guys all did something together that was so special, So to get to come back later is outstanding. Plus, we didn't have social media, we didn't have the internet. All these pictures that we have, all these stories that we had, we never got to share them with a lot of fans and stuff. So it's really special, like going to the comic concert special too, because that connection that you guys get to have them it's nice. Yeah, it is nice. I want to ask you. I want to go back just thinking about you being a child actor, because we've asked almost every child actor this question. Did you ever experience a time of like just total burnout? Like started out hot at thirteen years old, and then by the time your nineteen twenty, you're like, what am I? I'm just I'm done with this, like because I stopped getting work, or because like is there more happening or is for whatever? Did you personally feel like I'm done with this for a while, Like I know for for us, for example, boy Meats World ended and I needed to get ever. I needed to get as far away from acting and from audition, shinning and from projects as I could. And that started off as being like I'm just going to take a year off, and then it became I'm going to take two years off. And then once I was ready to start working again, nobody cared about me anymore and I couldn't get work. So then I had like a forced hiatus um. And then when you do like people do start offering you things, there are things that are like not at all what you thought you were going to be doing, and I just for now, I've had multiple different types of burnout. I am just curious if you ever experienced to burnout. Yes, But I also was kind of given a gift in that um. I was just raised to just go on automatic. You're going to college, and if you didn't go to college, you're like in my normal high school, I went to enough high school that it was still like, oh, that person did not go to college. They're right, Like there was such simplistic understanding of the different types of education that you can get. And so I went to vassar Um on the coast and I did not audition for anything unless it was like massive, like almost famous. It was like, I'm definitely doing that camera crow wants to have a meeting. Great, But otherwise they were like, what, you're not going in for law and order and you're in New York. And I was like, no, I'm going to college. I'm doing the college thing. I'm going to get a degree in political science. I'm gonna see if I even like acting. And of course it was so great because it was all everyone my age. It wasn't about getting paid. I was doing theater in every all sorts of different kinds of scripts, and you know, running to my policy classes like with like sticks in my hair, from rehearsals like life that really helped me choose it for myself as an adult, Like I gave myself that time. And I think that I thought politics was more corrupt than um. And I know, I know, right, but it was lucky. I think that the way I was raised and I didn't find myself in pause Asians where there was casting couches or things like that. So I'm very happy um. And then I think that I just then didn't understand as being a kid actor that like usually when you get better at something, you keep getting cast and so you can like say no to things because you're just not feeling it right now. You're like, oh no, no no, you should have taken that thing. Oh my god, Oh my god. No, no, it doesn't just last forever. It's like you and then it just chills and then it gets very cold. And then I had to pick up the time to try to have a baby for like five years do that, which you know. I look now and I'm like, oh wait, I have all the things I want. So I feel like this is a new chapter for me, um, coming into an older look as well. You guys are also youthful. We're also youthful thinks a while for sort of like our age to get caught up with like where we should be castingwise. I'm kind of think about all that, and I just keep thinking, do I love acting? Doesn't make me happy? What is my purpose? Why do I like to make stories? And is it giving the best of myself so that helps me in the leanard times? Take the ride, I think, great answer, great answer, Thank you for that. My body caught up to my age really quick. That's all I was thinking about. I hurt my I hurt my foot the other day. I still don't know how, no idea. It just hurts. It just all hurts, Marguerite, But look at that, Look at that. Thank you so much for being here with us. Um really interesting and wonderful and sightful to get your perspective on your two weeks on set with us as we entered the new show of season two. Uh so, yeah, thank you for taking the time to be with us, and I hope to see you again soon. Maybe we'll see you at a con. I know I appreciate that you guys are going through your old work with both candor and delight, and just remember to be gentle on yourselves. But also it's really good to do it together as a cast because you guys can support each other because it's a pretty vulnerable thing that you did then and now, do you know that's exactly right? Thank you again, Marguerite. I thought it was really cute. Will that that the majority of the feeling that she had from and her memory from it was just like I was really excited and I got to make out with you, and yeah, it was some uncomfortable like adults, I guess, And then she even said she was like I just kind of looked at it like my prize for all this discomfort was that I got to kiss you. It just so sweet. It is very sweet. It is very very sweet. I remember feeling that too, and it's I I had the same thought earlier this week along with like, you know, the thoughts I had watching White Lotus was like I actually remember being also very excited to like have girls on the show and be able to, like she said, sort of have this safe space to like, you know, where it's like we kind of have to kiss each other. But you also a lot of times I didn't want to kiss people, you know. Um, there was a sort of there was that corollary to it, that scort. It needs to be said, because I feel like we've emphasized so much of the negative um that I think there was some you know, it's almost kissing is always fun. Yeah, of course, I mean, of course it is with it now for instance, though like now, I would be like life and yeah, I mean you know what I mean, I don't really like acting. I would feel more, Yeah, but I feel more as because I'm an adult. I'm so I'm so comfortable in my own body that i'd be I'd be more. It would be me present, more present as an actor, as opposed to like my awkward teenage self kind of going through everything. Um. But no, I mean again, this was the only time, and I will say this, this is we I certainly didn't want to make any sort of it didn't want to make it seem like our set was dominated by a bunch of old, disgusting men, because that's it's not accurate. I mean, it's just not an accurate interpretation. And this in this case, it was odd that there was a bunch of bands standing around us trying to kind of decipher how we were going to do this scene. And it was frankly, the only time that happened normally it was just you. It didn't the scene that you kissed somebody and you end up kissing somebody. Um, that also really stopped for my character. Uh, you know, by the time Eric became dumb, all the girls went away, there were there was I don't think I had a kissing scene after season three or four. Yeah, they gave you Matt Lawrence instead. Exact exactly what about with Maitland. Did you guys ever date on the show? And trying to remember it was Matt and her character that the show she dated Matt. No, I never once. Once Eric became the fun like kind of the funny foil, there was never another kissing scene ever again, which was right around the time where you and Trino were making out like all the time, all the time. Yeah, so it was this was this was a very That's why that's why it was so jarring for me. I guess it's just because it was in the early part of the show. It was when I was younger. Um, but later when it comes back, I wasn't. I didn't do any kissing at all. And by the time we got to the later seasons where Ben and I were already an established couple. But then we'd have like our breakup scene, you know, our breakup episodes, where we would go out with other people and I'd get to make out with somebody else I would get. I would be thrilled. And not that I did not mean that in any sort of a way to sound disparaging to Ben, but it was like Ben and I had very much established that, Yeah, that was the person I kissed every week. It was as if you had had Yeah, I was. I was in a basically married TV kissing relationship. And then like there'd be a new guy and I'd think, I wonder what's gonna be I wonder what he looks like. I wonder if we're gonna have a brush on each other, And yeah, I'd be thrilled. I'd be like, oh, look at this guy. And then you get to be in the schoolroom together and you start thinking like is their chemistry or we you know, Yeah, I mean there's definitely all that. It just I know, for me, I was I guess I was a late bloomer because it just it was not happening for me at twelve, and even at thirteen, I just remember feeling out of my element. But by the time I got to be fifteen sixteen, I was like, yeah, I mean you know, then you then you go to Islands with your mom's after and your mom's take a bunch of pictures of you and you end up with four photo albums like I have of just hot guys in random hot guys, and you know how you hit certain age. So I was also a late bloomer, but now I know I've hit the age were The only thing about your story that resonated with me was how good the fries and burgers were. It man that that they toast the buns and there's a crunch to him and probably probably butter lettuce. That's where you're supposed to use You're right now, it is butter let us get home. That's that's that's the age of Matt now. Or we're talking about making out and the only thing going through my head, it's like when we were going to do our when we were going to do our Christmas Day, I almost said, so, we're just gonna go to like a chain like t g I Fridays or Ruby Tuesday. Where we're going I just I don't know the cheesecake factory. I was like, I know, you guys both love that, So if we're going to do a dinner, maybe we should just do that. Yeah, and we had a good time. I love I'm on page thirty one of the menu, cheesecake. That's good. It gets good. It's getting good. I'm just out of the apps, so yeah, it gets good.
