I could only immatt well, I don't even know if I could imagine what it was like or is like after what happened yesterday. Uh, the women's team also losing gold medal to the United States. That was expected yesterday was not expected. And I think there were to a man the Canadian team saying we were better, and yes, they probably were more talented, and for most of the game it felt like they always had the puck. They always had, you know, some kind of scoring opportunity. But all it takes is one or two you have a great goaltender and then all you need is one other person to make a play, and that's what you had. And it sounded like this.

But this is three on three hockey, and yes, do we want three on three hockey in the Olympics for the gold medal?

But that one was devastating because when you think, like the United States should be better than what they are if you look back on forty six years ago, we should be and Canada has been great and dominating. And I really thought, the way that was going in the first two periods, how does Canada not win this? And all it took was a couple of brilliant saves and then all of a sudden, you know, you start to realize all it takes is just one play. That was it. When you get to overtime, it's just one play? Could it be fluky? If you played ten times, would Canada win nine? I'm not so sure about that. Now, if you go to the Miracle on Ice Al Michael's join us next hour. If they played ten times, the Soviets are winning ten times. They were that good. But those were professionals USA with Mike Eruzioni and Jim Craig, I mean that they were college players. This is these are professionals against professionals. But I did love the attitude, the spirit. It just it felt big and it lived up to it. And you know, when you're watching the Olympics, when you think, oh, that person's going to win, the quad god is going to win, and then the quad God doesn't win. You're like, wait a minute, that's not supposed to happen. Lindsey vonn is going to be one of the big stories until she's in a hospital then. But they the Olympics has a way of birthing new heroes like Jack Hughes. I mean, he's a great player for the Devils. I don't know if you're tuning in on Wednesday night on ESPN Plus when the Devil's play the Sabers to watch Jack Hughes maybe or his brother maybe. But I thought this was a great showcase for the NHL. And I know it's tough to do that. It's tough to do that in the middle of your season. I understand that, But you got a chance to showcase your sport. Yes, mar Hockey to me is kind of like soccer.

Speaker 2: Well, curling is that way too, that you're watching it and then all of a sudden I become an expert, you know, and you know it's kind of really simple with what you do in curling, and you do feel like, of all the sports in the Olympics, you kind of feel like you could do that one. Speaker 2: Sport when it's played at its highest level, when you have the Stanley Cup final over time, I think it it supersedes all other sports.

Speaker 9: And I think because you sort of you need like the skill, like the technical skill of a soccer player, the toughness of a football player, and the I don't know, like speed or endurance of a basketball player maybe or something. All of that back and forth and then you're on and then you're off or whatever. It just combines some of the best parts of all these other sports into one.

Speaker 2: And they're the best athletes when you think about what they do. And you get to have a stick, and you got a stick and you're doing it on skates, people are flying around, you're allowed to punch somebody. I mean, you do go to the you know, the sin bin. You get a time out, they don't. They don't spend you, and it used to be they encouraged you to go out there and punch somebody. It was just when it's played at its highest level, I think it's better than any other sport just because of the action with that. And a friend of mine sent me a reminder of just how close Toronto came to winning the World Series the force out of the plate and then just how close there were a couple of goals that should have happened. And you think about just how close Canada came to winning the World Series Toronto and winning the gold medal.

Speaker 10: Yeah, Paul, I've got an Olympic wrap up article that says curling got the most airtime because how the sport takes a long time. It's like ten rounds or ends as they call it. Curling got more airtime than any other sports nationally, and.

I'm watching like I don't even know what the You know, there was some kind of cross country skiing yesterday, but I didn't know exactly how long it was supposed to go, but it felt like it was going on for hours, going through the countryside there. I mean that now, those guys if they're animals when you're out there, those are athletes. If you've ever tried to cross country ski, your lungs are burning like in the you know, first thirty seconds. Yeah.

Speaker 9: See, it's so weird how you could watch especially it seems like the Winter Olympics, and every year there seems to be a new sport that I don't remember or like, is this new this year? Have they always done that? Curling had that sometime in the last I don't know ten years or so, ten twelve years, where curling all of a sudden jumped down. We all loved curling. That ski mountaineering thing where you're skiing uphill doing that, that's crazy. I don't remember that one. I don't remember that getting much attention. That is a crazy sport.

Speaker 11: I'm a first time calling a longtime listener. My best of the weekend, obvious is the US men's team bringing home the gold on the anniversary of Marical on Ice. My better of the weekend was what it meant for hockey as a whole in this country. Uh, these men's and women's teams are going to inspired entire generation of young players across this country. And I must say Mike Tarico's message after the game said it best. Uh, these teams are going to make these kids want to pick up a stick and play. Just such a good weekend for the sport of hockey in this country. I'm the hockey player myself VP. I grew up watching the Red Wigs dominate the nineties, which inspired so many kids here in Michigan to play, And as a Michigan I couldn't be prouder of how well our state was represented. Yeh bark and help the Hughes brothers, Megan Teller. The list goes on. Just incredible. But my bestest of the weekend by far was the moment where the whole team huddle around with Goodreau's jersey for the winning photo and it's with this kids out there on the ice. Such a tragic story, but that's the moment that his family will cherish forever. I still get goosebumps thinking about it. To free Bird and thanks take for taking my call.

Speaker 2: Yeah, that was their theme song, was Freebird, but Johnny Hockey and they had his jersey there, his parents were there, and it kind of came out of nowhere. It was like wow. And then they were carrying his jersey around the ice. They brought the kids out on the ice and he and his brother were tragically killed by a driver who might have been drunk. And it was just well done. It was just well done my team USA. Yeah, Pauling, Like.

But Jalen Brown and I came in and I wanted to know where DraftKings had him for the MVP. SGA is the big favorite. Then it's Nicola jokicch then it's Kid Cunningham, and then it's really a I guess it's a two man ray. I mean, maybe Kid Cunningham, but SGA is minus one forty Jokers plus three hundred, Kate Cunningham plus five point fifty, and then it's Victor at plus twenty five hundred. Then it's Luca at plus four thousand, same odds as Jalen Brown. And I thought Jalen Brown might be up higher than Luca because, you know, and Peyton Pritchard's played really well. I mean, they've gotten a lot of contributions there. They're the number two seed, and okay, we can talk about the East, you know, not that competitive. Detroit's been great. If the Knicks get some defense out of Brunson and Cat, they're going to be there. In the Eastern Conference Finals. Yeah, sorry, I have it. Yeah, but Jalen Brown has been great, been great for the Celtics, so maybe those odds improve just a little bit. She had three straight fourth place finishes. That's tough and it's probably her last Olympics, I think. But man, you go three straight races and you finish in fourth of each of those. Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he had two golds in a silver maybe, but yeah, you know, there there's always these names that come out, they surface that you don't expect. I mean, that's the beauty of the Olympics, is you know, And the pressure that's on when you're favored to win a gold. It's nice to be that good that your favor to win a gold, but I'd hate to have that pressure that you know you gotta win. And even if you do win, can you really truly celebrate the way others, you know, when they win a gold medal or any metal, it's well, you're supposed to win. And I think you saw that in men's figure skating. The pressure was enormous and the quad God talked about it, and he knew it. He knew it going in and that was, you know, a shamed to see when you put in all of that effort, your parents and all of that money to get you to that point. And then you follow a couple of times, Uh, Brian in South Carolina? Hi, Bry, what's on your mind?

These coaches who embarrassed themselves on the sidelines being demonstrative throwing things. You're supposed to be the one who has decorum.

Like, at some point you have to look at yourself and say, how could I ever criticize my players. If I act this way, react this way. Same with Bob Knight. You know when coach Knight would be talking about his players, you know, telling them to have composure and settled, and he's going crazy. And I never understood that that I as a coach, I'm the one that has to be under control. And Mick Cronan throwing out one of his players. Okay, I understood it. He does like attention, and then you have a press conference and then you're dressing down somebody. I just don't have time for it. I find these people very boring that they want. You know, look, I've criticized Danny Hurley, but he knows that he's trying to fix that. Slowly, but he's he's trying. At least he gets a couple of national championships out of this. But I'm watching these coaches and it. You know, they get all fired up in the face of an official a player, and you're the one that has to have composure and you and you don't have it. It's like Doug Gottlieb. Doug at his press conference, he's slamming the table and he's yelling, and I'm going I know, you're upset, but act like a professional. Act, act like a coach. You're you know, these temper tantrums. I'm gonna kick something, I'm gonna throw something. I think this is the anniversary of Bob Knight throwing a chair in a game against Purdue. Uh might have been made. I think it was on this day where you're going, what are you doing? Yes, Todd?

Speaker 2: Well, I would say Malcolm Butler. I mean having been right there, you know, twenty five yards away to see it happen, and it won a Super Bowl, So I would say that that moment. I mean, Lebron's chased down of Andrea Gudala is a wonderful plague. People forget the Michael Jordan's strip of Karl Malone because he came down and then hit the game winning shot that won the championship. But there have been a lot of incredible defense it plays. Speaker 2: I'm not aware of the severity of the injury. I know that I saw quotes where he said he thought he could go. That might have been a situation where like, you don't want to hurt your team. We get caught up in Willis Reid came out and he had a couple of jumpers and well he didn't stay on the floor, but he came out and gave you that emotional lift. You know, Kurt Gibson hits the home run, but it's not like you were going to have him play the field, and like he had one moment there that you could use him for I don't know if there's a moment for Sidney Crosby where you could have had him come out, maybe give you an emotional lift. But you had so much talent on that team it didn't feel like you needed Sidney Crosby.

I think the first question the commissioner got had to do with tanking. He's got a real problem because these teams are overt, they're blatant. And somebody brought this up because when I was growing up, there used to be a territorial draft where players who played at the University of Cincinnati would play for the Cincinnati Royals. Oscar Robertson played at Cincinnati and therefore he went to the Cincinnati Royals. Bob Coosey played at Holy Cross, he went to the Boston Celtics. So you had a territorial draft. And somebody brought this up. Could we get rid of the draft as we know it and tanking and have a territorial draft. Well, let me pose this to you and why it would never work. Let's say aj Debanza, who might be the number one player in the country, he plays at BYU. Well, then he would go to Utah. He'd play for the Utah Jazz. So what would stop the Utah Jazz from saying to BYU. We're going to give you as much money as you need for NIL to bring in the best players in the country, because we will get them on the Utah Jazz. You could have a collective helping BYU, which would allow that player or players to then go to the Utah Jazz. So it wouldn't work because you would get professional teams who could then help finance college teams. So those players would then have to go to you know, the team that was in their city. The territorial Draft, Yes, Martin.

Speaker 2: Yeah, they get too many players. But you know, Territorial Draft while you know, I guess it worked back in the sixties, but it can't work now. Just too much money at stake for these teams NIL. And then all of a sudden, Aj Debnsa is on the Utah Jazz just because he went to BYU. But people proposed that there's there's just so many What if everybody's in the lottery. What if your picks aren't protected, every team has the same odds. That's been brought up. What if and this is something I brought up to the commissioner, and that is after your team is eliminated, the wins that you get by being competitive will help increase your odds in the lottery. Therefore, you're not shutting down Zach Levine and some bonus if you're Sacramento or you would like for them to be able to play. But also understand this with these players, the players, you know, you're going to be bringing in somebody who's going to take somebody's place on that team, and you know, getting everybody to have a common goal that's challenging here. But there's so many different facets attached to this that I just I don't know if there is a is they are a soft landing spot for this topic where everybody is going to be satisfied, And I don't think that's going to be the case. And you know, even if ratings go down, understand they're in the midst of what a ten or eleven year deal worth billions of dollars. These players, they don't care what's happening in ten years from now or the ratings go down. You got all this money there. The commissioner and the owners are the ones who have a problem here now. The players. Players are going to, Hey, I'm going to play fifty five games and maybe extend my career by two extra years and maybe make an extra forty million dollars. So I don't know if there's a oh, okay that makes the most sense. I don't know if there's that moment yes, hud.

Speaker 3: And what if the team is really trying and they're just not good enough and you want to have parody, But this team that's actually not tanking, they just don't have a good enough roster and now they have the equal chance of getting the top picks as the better teams than Where does that leave you in terms of trying to make teams more equitable or have a chance in the next couple of years to win a title like the NFL tries to do.

Speaker 2: Yeah, they're looking at lottery odds allocated based on two year records. Lottery extended to include playing teams, flatten the odds for all lottery teams. No longer allowing a team to pick in the top four in consecutive years. Teams can't pick in the top four the year after making the conference. Fine, they're just throwing out as anything and everything.
