And you've got Clay Holmes, You've got Matthew Boyd. You've got some relievers too, including Mason Miller. The WBC is looking like it's going to be a lot of fun.

Speaker 1: Big market and have a lot to do, and frankly, it's a little bit concerning where some of these clubs are, maybe all of them for that matter.

Speaker 1: Now, the Yankees are entering a season in which Aaron Judge will turn thirty four years old. Guess what, Aaron Judge is not going to be great forever. They need to win a World Series when he is still in his prime.

Speaker 1: They've signed Ryan Yarborough, They've signed onmed Razzario, both one year, two point five million dollar contracts. They've lost Luke Weaver and Devin Williams, two of their relievers, to the Mets of all teams, and they still need that big bat to go with Judge, and they still need as well a starting pitcher because they have some questions injury wise in that rotation. Obviously, when Gary Cole comes back and Rodin comes back, they'll be in a better position. But you don't know exactly how those guys are going to perform and what they'll be capable of. So look for the Yankees to be active. They've been on Bellinger, we all know that, but they need to do some things, certainly to be the team that they want to be in twenty twenty six. The same can be said for their biggest rival, the Boston Red Sox. We've seen the Red Sox trade for Sonny Gray, We've seen them trade for Johann Oviedo. But what about the offense. We've heard them talking about adding two bats. Well, Alex Bregman is their main target. He is still out there. There are any number of possibilities for first base. You can trade for Wilson Contreris, you can trade for Ezach Parades. You didn't sign Pete Alonzo, so there are a lot of things they can do. Bobashett is another option for the Red Sox, but again we have yet to see them.

Speaker 4: And that's what I was going to ask you, Ken, There's only two teams right now that sit out there that haven't made any sort of big free agent signing. The pairing is interesting, Ken. It's the Color Rockies, which I guess that is to be expected just based on history of the franchise, but it's also the Boston Red Sox. They've not done that big free agent signing now. They missed out on Bregman, they missed out on Pete Alonzo or not Breagan, excuse me. They missed out on Pete Alonzo and Kyle Schwarber.

Speaker 1: Some other teams I want to mention here as well, National League teams, the Mets. We talked about them a little bit already. They get Devin Williams, they get Luke Weaver for their bullpen, good moves. You can't really question that. Even though they did lose Edwin Diaz, they make the trade Nimo for Marcus Simeon, and of course they lose Pete Alonso as well.

Speaker 1: Even though they have signed Jorge polan Go, they have to get more offense too, and someone who is going to compliment Juan Soto. He is younger than Aaron Judge, but he too is in his prime years right now. He is a guy you want to take advantage of while he is still at this level. I expect him to be at this level for a number of years.

Speaker 1: So the Mets, we talk about that for one thing, the compliment to Soto in the lineup, but the starting pitching is another issue. You've got Senga and MacLean and Sprote. Those guys are not going to be heavy.

Speaker 1: You've got some spots to fill. You've got David Peterson still, they've talked about possibly trading him along with Senga. They've got Sean Manya coming back. There are a lot of things going on here, a lot in play. But is this a championship rotation right now? I would suggest that it is not. The San Diego Padres. We've talked about them as well. I talked about them at length on our Monday show, Alana, because they've been talking to the Mets, talking to all twenty nine other teams. As Aj Preller always does, they have lost Dylan Cees, they have lost Robert Suarez, they could lose Michael King, though they still might be in the mix for him. He is a free agent who likely will sign this week. So the Padres obviously need to fortify their rotation. They were going to be without you Darvish as well. He's out for the season. They need to supplement their bullpen, and other than that, they're losing Luisa Rise, so maybe they find somebody in the infield to help them along. They're an interesting team. Aj Preller, as we've said many times before, capable of anything. And finally the Chicago Cubs. Now, the Cubs have taken some steps to improve their bullpen as well, film Aytion, Caleb Thielbar and Hoby Milner three additions that should help them. Of course, they are a team that has a big hole though as well, and that's Kyle Tucker. And Kyle Tucker is a free agent not expected to sign re sign with the Cubs, So where's their bat coming. They've been linked to Bregman. They can do some other things as well, but they need another hitter and they need a starting pitcher as well. Because of just where they are in their rotation. They could use one more, even with Shoda Immenaga returning on the qualifying offer.

Speaker 4: What about the Arizona Diamondbacks entering the twenty twenty five season, Ken, it was the largest payroll that they have ever had. Ken Kendrick says, let's go for it. Let's ask I'll ask you this. Do they sign Alex Bregman? Apparently they're in on the conversations. And does that mean they move Katel Marte or is Katel Marte and Alex Bregman a tandem deal?

Speaker 1: A lot of both excellent questions, And I can't say I know the answer is. But the fact that they're in these free agent discussions with Bregman is fascinating. And you remember March of twenty four they signed Jordan Montgomery out of nowhere.

Speaker 1: End of twenty five, for they signed Corbyn Burns out of nowhere. He has had Tommy John Obviously it hasn't worked out yet, but you still have Corbyn Burns, he hasn't opt out after this year.

Speaker 1: Oh but then Ken god aggressive and that is kind of how they operate. But yes, they are in on Bregman. The question is, and the bigger question to me is what happens with Marte If they get Bregman. You want to keep Marte? You put him with Perdomo and Corbyn Carroll. You've got a heck of a position club. But Marte is the player they can trade to get the pitching that they need, while Burns recovers from Tommy John, while Justin Martinez and aj Puck in their bullpen recover from Tommy John. So it's a fascinating team to watch. It's an owner who is routinely a great in a way that most other teams do not emulate in their market position. Now, Phoenix is a big city, but in terms of baseball markets, we don't consider it to be one of the top ones. It's not New York, it's not LA or Chicago, even Philly. So Ken Kendrick hats off to him. Now, they haven't done anything yet, but the mere effort should be applauded. Ken.

Speaker 4: Who has the pitching depth that the Arizona Diamondbacks would be looking for in order to trade kateel Martelet's do's take Bregman out of the equation. If Katel gets moved, what's the pitching call?

Speaker 1: Seattle has it, but I think they're more focused on Brendan Donovan. There are other teams, the Mets being one of them, that have it. They don't necessarily need katel Marte. With Marcus Simeon. You can look at a team like the Tampa Bay Rays even now, the Rays might not want to take on six years of katel Marte, even at a discounted rate, when it's ages thirty two to thirty seven seasons.

Speaker 1: I don't know that they be in but they do have pitching, and there are other teams as well. It's a fascinating guy because he is one of the best players in the game at his position second base, no question about that. He had the clubhouse issues last year, which were not small if you want to read about it. I've written about it, a lot of people have. And he's on this contract while he's a little bit older. It's a luxury tax hit of fourteen point six million per season, which is for a player of that caliber, very small. So I don't know how this turns out. Maybe they don't sign Bregman and maybe they don't trade Marte. That is a possible outcome here. The range of outcomes is what is what is so fascinating Alana with the Diamondbacks right now.

Speaker 4: Biggest domino still to fall after it was Schwarber, after it was Pete Alonso, is Alex Bregman. We know Alex Bredman is an Arizona in the offseason. He likes the Arizona lifestyle and the climate. I would imagine how much, if at all, Arizona being where it is, would would make Bregman want to go there instead of an American League team or a national team that's spring trains in Florida.

Speaker 1: It's a good question, and the Diamondbacks have one unique advantage. They are the only team that trains in the same metropolitan area where they play. No other team does that. None of the Florida teams do that. So that is something that is appealing to players spending spree training in the same place where they're going to live during the season. Now, Bregman is a little different than Corbyn Burns. Corbyn Burns signed with the Diamondbacks in large part because he wanted to stay in the Scottsdale Phoenix area. He just had twins with his wife and he's got a young family.

Speaker 1: Too, But Bregman, from what I'm told, is more willing to go to other places.

Speaker 1: Comfortable staying with the Diamondbacks or joining the Diamondbacks, He absolutely would be comfortable doing that. But he was quite happy in Boston last season, and I don't know that that geographical consideration is going to be as strong with him as it was with Burns.

Speaker 1: My colleague Will Salmon of The Athletic wrote a fascinating story about Murakami today and I encourage everyone to read it. And the gist of the story is this Murakami, at twenty five years old, might be the next Kyle Schwarber.

Speaker 1: He plays first, he plays third, But from what I understand, from what everyone is saying, he's not a great defender. He has a lot of swing and miss in his game. That's the concern teams have. The other concern is will.

Speaker 1: But he has incredible power, the power that teams crave. So if you sign him, you're betting that maybe he is the next shorever, but maybe he doesn't want to necessarily settle for a long term deal that will not pay him what he thinks he might be worth. Maybe he prefers to go short term, and maybe teams prefer to go short term because he is the boom bus player in this market. So what Will Roton got into was all of those details. And this is going to be really interesting on Monday to see exactly what happens here if you sign him short term.

Speaker 1: Or two years, that complicates matters somewhat. So it's a fascinating player. It's a player who hit fifty six home runs I believe in twenty twenty two and has continued to show great power in Japan. The question is how it's going to translate. It's always the question with Japanese hitters who come over. Some have done quite well. I would think it back to hed Hideki, Matsui and of course Saya Suzuki. Now some have not done so well, so Tsugo a couple of years ago, even Yoshida with the Red Sox. So the pitchers generally have been better bets coming over from Japan. Murakami represents perhaps the biggest gamble of all of the hitters who have come so far, and yet also he has massive, massive upside.

Speaker 4: The downside Ken, in my opinion, is that are they going to pay the posting fee and a short term deal for a d H he doesn't play on both sides of the ball? Does that factor into anything? Second part of the koestion is how long can you wait until he gets acclimated to playing baseball in the United States versus in Japan?

Speaker 1: Too, So he's not a pure DH necessarily. That's something we should consider when we discuss the comparison to Schwarber. He does offer some positional value if he doesn't play the position well. He doesn't offer much positional value, but at least right now he can man a position. And sure the question about the posting fee is a good one. You don't want to lose this guy right away if you're paying the extra money to get him. So obviously long term is the better way to go for a club, but long term is a bigger risk as well. And it's just a lot going on with this free agency with him. It's just really interesting to me and I'm fascinated to see how it all turns out.

They've signed Josh Bell, they plan to keep Joe Ryan and Pablo Lopez and Byron Buxton, and that alone seems to me to be an encouraging sign. But now you've got to build around them. You've got to build an entire bullpen. Pretty much because you gutted it at the deadline.

It seems he's now saying Cubs are content with current pitching unless deal fits their small market spreadsheets. My paraphrase, that's Mike's paraphrase. Do they at least feel shame? Mike is bummed, He's upset about his cubbies.

Speaker 1: Ken, Mike's not alone among Cubs fans, and there's been a lot of frustration over the past several years with the way they've gone about it, with the spending and just their approach in general. It's not an all out approach by any stretch of the imagination. They ultimately might just want to play the market for starting pitching. But in my opinion, there's a guy like Zach Gallan who's out there, There's Rangers Suarez who's out there. There are others now some of them are going to go for prices that might be beyond the cub's comfort level and other teams comfort level for that matter. That's fine, but they do need one more starter, and they.

It was such an exciting tournament. So you've seen commitments now from Aaron Judge, from Paul Skins, from Trek Scoogle, and DeRosa has worked hard to secure them. The players deserve credit too, but Mark de Rosa for that is my Dude of the week.

Look at this, Trey Is Savage high and of course Tyler Rogers way low. You take a look at the release points, the arm angles, all the things that they're now teammates. But to me, for a team of that caliber to commit like that to a rookie at a prime defensive position, that is a risk. And it's going to be really interesting to see how this outfield plays out. I believe it was Mike Petriello of MLB dot Com the other day who said this could be one of the worst outfields in the major leagues. Garcia will replace Nick Castianos. We'll see how it all plays out. But the Phillies could use one more right handed hitting outfielder to pair platoon with Brandon Marsh, then I think we'll be looking at something better. But there is a lot of risk in that outfield. That's I remember.
