Speaker 2: Show, Donnie Baseball. Five and one Phillies on a roll since they made the managerial change last week. Jim Salisbury rubin tomorrow, Junior. I'm Todd SOLEUCKI. It's the Phillies Show. It's Monday, May fourth, twenty twenty six. The Phillies have won two out of their first three this weekend in Miami and Jim don manningly, we've gotten a chance to uh talk to him quite a bit over the past week. Obviously he's he's in the manager's seat and let's talk Donnie Baseball, and it is time welcome back. It is time for first pitch. Speaker 1: Hey, they made the move because they needed to shock this team's system. You know, it's like when you have a swimming pool and it's green, you shock it and all of a sudden it looks better. I think they shocked this team and it looks better. Everything looks a little sharper. They're five and one under done, maddingly, and that's what they need stack the wins. I wouldn't even look at the standings. I really wouldn't. I just worry about picking off series. You know, have this kind of quiet goal of winning and six out of every ten ball games win series, and just look up in five or six weeks, see where you are. Keep it going, you know, because right now the standings might frustrate you because the Braves they just hate to lose. They don't lose. They they just went into Colorado, Spencer Strider's back didn't pitch good, but they beat beat Colorado, so there's still ten and a half up. Accooni went down with a little bit of an injury, a hamstring, so that's something to watch. But I do believe that looking at the standings will frustrated. Take care of your own clubhouse, take care of your own business. And you know, I've kind of sensed that a little bit. The team, you know, looking at them in Chicago before the managerial change was made. You know, the losing beats you down like nothing else in pro sports, and they looked like a bunch of zombies. And just because they were beaten down by the losing and the underperformance and everything just is ticked up here in the last week, so five and one, and you know, Monday night they go for a series win. It's a four game series. They've already taken two out of three, and I think it would be very, very good for this team to head home with a series win under spelt. And one of the real promising things for me is a couple guys that have been a little cold of swinging it better. But the number one thing for me is starting pitching. In those five wins, four quality starts. So right, this is the team that's bread and butter's always been pitching, and it seems like it's starting to round it to form a little bit.

Speaker 2: So I crunched some numbers, Jim, because you know, I like to crunch numbers, and this is the These are the Phillies' numbers since Don Maddingly took over as intern manager last Tuesday. Now we've talked a lot over for several weeks. Offensively, they were maybe on a good day, they were like twenty seventh in baseball in a category on a good day, you know, rotation eer. I think after that loss in Atlanta was the worst in Major League Baseball. So here are their numbers again, This is super small sample size alert time. But I'm just just for argument's sake here. They're batting two fifty since last week, eleventh in baseball, on base fifteenth, slugging eleventh, ops twelfth runs per game. That's what it all boils down to, their averaging four point eight three runs per game. That's eleventh in the big leagues. Now, the pitching has gotten better too, you just mentioned it. And what a difference the pitching makes er seventh in Major League Baseball. Again, just in the last week, rotation era third two point one eight innings pitched by the rotation fourth. They've thrown thirty three innings. And if there wasn't that opener used in Game two of that double header, would probably be even to tick higher. They might even lead Major League Baseball. And then Bullpenny Ray that's kind of the we saw what happened the other night kind of hold on for dear life, Jim. But you know they you've seen some better you've seen some better performances, and you're right. I was. I wasn't in Chicago, but I was in Atlanta robs last weekend, and you could just.

Speaker 2: Weren't unpleasant and miserable, but you could just tell, like, this team is losing a lot of baseball games. You could just say that was the vibe.

Speaker 1: And the numbers, those are great numbers, and they wants to tell the biggest story of the starting pitching. I mean, last year, the Phillies had the second best starters ERA in all of baseball. I think it was Texas number one, Philadelphia number two. The Phillies led major League Baseball last year with eighty four quality starts, twelve more than the next closest team coming out of Atlanta. They were dead last and starters ERA five point eight to zero, and they had in those twenty eight games, they had a total of six quality starts. So that tells a story right there. Their strength was not a strength. And even if starting pitching is is not the thing you're building your team around or your team is built around in Major League Baseball, you still need it. You still need to get it, and they weren't getting it, and they've gotten it here in this short run. Like I said, only six quality starts in the first twenty eight games, and now in the next in the next five wins here they've gotten four of them, so that's they have a lot of money sunk into that starting rotation. They have a lot of money sunk in a lot of places when you have a three hundred and twenty or fifteen million dollar payroll or whatever it is. But they have a lot of money sunk in this rotation. You know, between Wheeler at forty two million a year, the top single season salary for starting pitcher in Major League Baseball this year, Between Sanchez and Lozardo who recently got big extensions, between Nola who a few years got a big extension, and you're trying to, you know, work in the young guy painter. They need those guys to perform, and we've seen it lately, so very very good. Signed. I think Wheeler Wheeler's return, I don't know, I really I always believe in the in the mental side of the game and and and the feel and how players look around and they feel a sense of, uh maybe strength or confidence from maybe even one guy. And I think Wheeler's return is, you know something that the rotation they depend on him, and I think it's good that that he's back. Obviously physically on the mound, but also his presence means something.

Speaker 2: Yeah, he get that. Gave that great quote after Friday Night start. He said, you know, I think Jim, you asked the question just you know, the rotation coming together, and he said, you feel the pressure. It's early in the season, but you feel the pressure. He's talking about the rotation's performance. So we're really good staff and we've got to pitch like it. They pay us for a reason. We're the core in a sense. So it starts with us putting up zeros and kind of making the statement. You know where we go from there. It starts with the rotation. It absolutely does.

Speaker 1: I thought that was and then he went on to say, you know, Braves are a good team and we you know, we can't We've fallen behind a good bet and we need to We can't fall behind much more. I thought it was a remarkably frank interview. He's usually pretty frank, but even this was a little bit of a cut above. Just it reflected some urgency, which you know is important given where they are.

Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt, you know don Maddingly. You know, as I said, we've gotten a chance to talk to him a lot more obviously over the past week every day, twice a day every day for the past week, and he's had some interesting things to say. Jim. He said before Saturday's game, we were just talking to him or I'm sorry, Sunday's game, we were talking to him and he mentioned and I think we started asking him about like defensive positioning and the defense and whatnot. And he says that when they get back to Philadelphia, they're gonna have They're gonna get everybody together and have have a little team meeting of coaching staff, front office staff. And I'm not going to read you this entire quote, but he says, honestly, it's not something about anything that we've done to this point, but it's something that they do in Toronto. It's something that I like, it's just kind of like, where are we as a group? You know, uh, these are the facts. This is where we are in reality. You guys, hear me talking about playing good baseball? Are we playing good baseball? Are we not? What are we doing? Accordey League? Where do we rank? All that stuff? And so they're going to get together and do that, and you know, he basically said, Hey, if I go somewhere and I hear a somebody has a good idea, it's now my good idea. But what I like that idea of getting getting together. And I'm know they meet all the time, and there's always meetings and after every gay game, Dave den Browse can press and Manningly go talk to the manager and they talk about stuff. But maybe every three to four weeks, Don says he wants to do this, get together and talk about Okay, what's going on with this, what's going on with that? And defensive positioning was kind of spark that conversation, but kind of be kind of interesting to hear Don talk about that, and that's something new that they'll they'll be doing over the next I guess over the rest of the season.

Speaker 1: Yeah, like a little checkpoint every three weeks to a month, see where you where you stack up maybe in some of the less obvious categories statistically against the rest of the league, and where you can make tweaks and try to make improvements. You know. I think it's a good idea to always hash things around and get a different set of eyeballs on things as you as you seek solutions. And I think it it shows great humility if that's the right word with Don Mattingley, or a great willingness, willingness to get better bet her and to learn and never be satisfied, because I this the guy who's accomplished a ton in the game as a player, and you know he's been a long time manager. He's managed in the playoffs. But you know, clearly he saw something he liked in Toronto. He wants to bring it with him. So I think that's that's a sign that you know, you never stopped learning. So it's it was good to hear, and you know, I commend him for being open and talking about it. He I find him to be to be open like he he he hit Alec Baum clean up on Sunday, and you know, he said he was giving Garcia a day off and that's the way the lineup worked all that day. Uh, that's the way the lineup worked that day, worked best that day. He could have he could have put a period there and stopped. And then he said, but you know, I also think the guy's a good hitter and he's going to come around. I want to show some confidence in him. You know, not not a lot of guys would have said I want to show some confidence in him, they would have kind of stopped there and and uh, but I thought that was you know, I thought that was good little bit. He's kind of open and so far, you know, so good in the in the team's performance.

Speaker 2: Obviously, he's comfortable in his own skin, you know, like he's he's done manningly, he's got a great career, you know, arguably a Hall of Famer. I think he should be in the Hall of Fame. Not there yet, but he knows what he's accomplished. He's he's managed a lot of games. And Jim, you.

Speaker 3: Asked him on Sunday about Lizardo and how good he's been, and you ask him something about something mechanically, and he kind of went, I mean he not kind of when he goes listen, I don't know a lot.

Speaker 2: About pitching mechanics. I know about hitting. I know hitting is hard against good pitching. But it was just an honest moment, you know, He's not like in a BS he and go like, yeah, you know, I feel like there's some mechanical things that da da, da dada. He's like, listen, man, if you're going to ask me about if he's flying open, is he flying open. Was he flying open the last his first three games?

Speaker 1: Yeah, we kind of kind of took that old Jim Palmer quote and twisted a little bit about himself. Like Jim Jim Palmer has that famous quote about Earl Weaver when he said the only thing Earl Weaver knows about pitching is that it's hard to hit, and Donali kind of used that, but you're right, real, there's a real he's comfortable. Yeah, and why shouldn't he be. Why shouldn't he He's seen, he's seen everything, and you know he's here to try to help this team through a bad stretch. And they got a lot more miles to go, many more miles to go. But the first you know, a few hundred feet have been pretty good.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny. It's funny to hear his perspective on hitting. When we were talking to Boom again about Boom again the other day, because Boom is really struggled against hitting the fastball, and he hit one on Friday night. It was like the hardest fastball he's hit all season for bass hit and asked him a little bit about like, you know, when you were slumping, you know, what do you try to do? Like what was your mindset? And he said, I love this quote. It was hit it hard. Basically it's like fit. Although it was great because he goes, You're gonna have to take this part out, but it was basically, I'm going to square some stuff up. I don't care where it goes. I don't care if I get a hit, but I'm gonna square up some balls and get back to competing. So and some players have mentioned it's like it's cool to have that perspective from him, knowing that he's been in the batter's box and and you know, he he knows what it's like to be like Kyle Schwarber. Maybe not like Kyle Schwarber struck out eight consecutive at bats, you know, or earlier this weekend, but he's been through the grind before, so he knows.

Speaker 1: So Schwarber strikes out eight consecutive at bats here in Miami, right, and then Sunday he draws a walk in his first appearance, first played appearance, and he looks over at the dugout and the dugouts on the top step clapping. If that was in Wrigley Field a week ago when they were losing every freaking night and they were tight as a car, everybody was miserable, nobody, he wouldn't have looked over and they wouldn't have been clapping. But that tells you what a couple of wins will do. They get everybody to breathe and exhale, and all of a sudden, you can kind of laugh at a moment like that, or at least have a you know, a quick chuckle. And I think that's really healthy, because this game will grind you up. It's every day for six months, really for seven months if your account spring training, and eight months if you're lucky enough to get in the postseason and last a little while. You need those moments because if you are too tense and too uptight, this game will put you right through the wood chipper.

Speaker 2: Right, no doubt about that. And one other thing that jumped out yesterday we were talking about this gym last night, was uh, it was in the third inning and and this is something that that Rob Thompson did as well. But in the third inning, Felix Reyes was on second base, two outs, single to right field, and it was shot through the ball, shot through the whole a little bit like a low line drive, and he hesitated and he broke back to second base. He forgot how many outs there were. And then he came comes back into the dugout after that inning and uh, the camera caught. You know, if you can see this if you're watching us on YouTube, Don Downey pulled him aside, Felix Reyes aside, and I had a little chat with Felix basically saying, hey man, you gotta know how many outs there are on the basis if you're running the bases, you gotta you gotta know that that that stuff. So he's definitely loosing guys up. But you know he'll give people talking.

Speaker 1: That's a little inside joke. But I do think when we talk about this stuff, people people draw comparisons. And I want to say Rob Thompson addressed this stuff too. He just would take it down the tunnel and when nobody could see it. He was a more behind the scenes type guy. We're not making a point that this stuff doesn't get a dressed. Didn't didn't get it dressed, But it doesn't. Yeah, Donnie, he didn't wait and and this is a kid who's still learning the game. Yes, at the big league level. I'll tell you what he powdered that ball. Hit that one ball to left at double uh. He had a lot of top spin on it. Hit off the wall one hundred and ten miles an hour. If he had had a little loft to that ball, it would have went all away to a little Havana, Jim.

Speaker 1: Well, I probably could name those three guys, but i'll zero went on one, and that is the guy who uh pitched seven innings of two run ball yesterday, zero walks ten k's in his last two starts, zero walks eighteen k's two quality starts and a bit of a rebound because in mid April struggled with control and ran a high ERA over three starts. But in his last two he's really been brilliant, and I think he's such an important piece. Jesus Lozardo. Give him a slice of the Manco Manco. He's my best of the week.

Speaker 2: That's a great one. I mean, he's uh getting him back on track, huge, huge, huge. They need that. They need that starting rotation and get going. If I was going to go under the radar Jim, maybe I would go with Chase Sugart. Oh, he had he had two wins coming out of the bullpen on Thursday the doubleheader. I just love guys like that in the sense of you know, like yeah, under the radar. Yeah, people coming into spring training, you know, they pick him up. It's like who's Chase Sugar. Next thing you know he's getting. He's getting two wins in a doubleheader. First pitcher in major in the major leagues to do that since Brian Dansing with the Twins in twenty thirteen. First Phillies pitcher to do that since Terry Adams in two thousand and two. Great performance by him. You know, you need those guys to step up, no quesh, frawl back into it. You can't just be the big boys are important. Yes, the big boys are important, but you need those little complimentary pieces to step up and help you get a win every once in a while. If you're going to get back into this postseason race.

Speaker 1: No question. And he's a great pick, great great pick for Americo Americo Best of the Week. He you know, he gets the he takes the ball and two wins of a double header, which is like a lot of times these days, if you ask a guy to do that, he's on the phone with his agent saying this is child abuse. You know, like like, no, give me the ball. I want to stay in the Big Leagues. Great job. And then Sunday, Lozardo's up to one hundred and two pitches a little shaky there, and the seventh gives up hits a batter, It gives up a two run home and a double, and Don Mattingly brings Sugar in there with a man on second base and he quells it. And just the fact that he's in that game. I know it's seven to two, but the game is getting a little hairy there. So manically, I thought showed confidence in him, and I thought the young man delivered. I like him. He's got a little Texas tough to him. And this is how you stick around and you keep getting the ball by getting big outs late in games. So great pick there on Chase Sugar.

Scott had a Stott had a tremendous week. He's had two home runs, two three run home runs, triple front and the game tying triple in Game one, the double and the bunt. Bryce and Sis had a great week.

If he had gotten a nine there, he would have tied Dylan Cousins for the most by a Phillies position player in the expansion era. That's since nineteen sixty one. Of course, Dylan Cousins did it over like the span of five months back in whatever year that was, twenty seventeen, twenty eighteen, twenty nineteen. So good job to everybody. Manco Manco, best week. We love Manco Manco. We're going to be doing a show there, I believe sometime in July. So when we get more details on that, we'll let you know. But there you go, Manco Manco the best of the best, and it is the best of the best.

Speaker 2: That's right, You're right, one hundred percent, one hundred percent. So all right, let's let's a few more things that I want to address Jim before we roll. Is the Phillies made a roster move on Saturda, a couple of roster moves on Saturday. They activated JT real Muto from the injured list, and it was kind of like, what are they gonna do here? Well, they ended up dfang Dylan Moore and keeping Garrett Stubbs on the team. So now the Phillies have three catchers, and I think I have what Don said on the catchers. Let me pull that up. He says he likes it. He says it's a little more freedom, pinch hitting, running. He said Stubbs isn't your traditional catcher and that he can't do anything else, which is true. You can play second, third, left, you can run, you can steal, and of course you know we know that he's a great guy in the clubhouse, but so that was I think that is a move that a lot of people were in the clubhouse were happy to see. People love Garrett Stubbs. He does bring a lot to the team. It's not just the music and the laughs and the fun, but that stuff is important. But they do like kind of what he brings in the clubhouse, in the dugout, on the field, and then right away after down Manningly says, I would pay it. He's like, listen, I'm not looking to start the guy in left field, but he can play out there in a pinch, you know, if we need, if we need to make a move. If he said, if the game gets crazy, we could throw him out in left field. We can have him play some third base, but I'm not looking to do this. And then an hour later he's a starting left fielder because Justin Crawford had a migraine and finds him first pitch of the game or first batter of the game, he makes a catch at the wall.

Speaker 1: So this is not like, you know, just picking a guy you like he's there because he does bring value. I mean, he fits in the clubhouse, there's no question about that. But this guy, if he's a valuable twenty sixth man, I'm not going to overstate it. He's not gonna be in the starting lineup. But you know, in a pinch, in a pinch, he can play the corner in field spots, he can play second base, he can play the outfield on a corner in a pinch, And that's what you want in your twenty sixth man. A guy who can wear a lot of gloves and you know he can run a little bit. For a catcher, you can pincher on him. And now with a third catcher on board, if you're playing march On, like we had that situation the other night he called for I mean, don didn't want to pinch it because he didn't want to lose Marshaan with Wheelers still in the game. But if JD is on the bench and you have a third catcher, maybe he would have. So now if Marchn starts, you can pinch it with j T and still have a third catcher. So in the with the versatility and the fact that this is an organization doesn't have a lot of catching depth. Who knows, if they tried to get subs through waivers again, they might have lost him. They might I don't know, they might have So having that catch depth is very valuable. But this guy, he does a lot of little things for a ball club. I mean, how many times are we standing in the dugout at you know, three o'clock in the afternoon, empty ballpark and he walks by you with all his catching gear heading out to catch five guys in the bullpen, right, you know, he's working, and then he gets a start the other day, makes a good catch. Oh they got one hit and he had their only hit. So I understand why they kept him. I think between the catching depth, the fact that he can do a lot of things, the fact that he fits in that room with this group of guys, which to me is important, I just think they thought it through and it makes some sense keeping him over Dylan Moore. It's a tough business, and Dylan Moore had a very tough job. It's tough to stay this is an everyday game and it's really tough to stay sharp when you're not playing, and tough to put your best foot forward when you're not playing. So hopefully he'll land somewhere else and get a little more pet.

Speaker 2: Yeah, no doubt. And and and Don said to you, if you look at how we've used that twenty six man, it's not a lot. There's so you know, keep keep the catching depth, keep the good guy in the clubhouse, keep the guy that you know he can bounce around enough. And so it may it makes sense. It makes sense to me, why why you keep a guy like that? So yeah, and uh, Juan Duran could be activated soon.

Speaker 2: Don Don goes, hey, how was u Doran's bullpen yesterday? He's like, eh, I don't want to say it. I don't want to say too much. But he did hit one hundred in the bullpen yesterday, like oh okay, And so Doran's coming off. He was doing his pregame work yesterday and we stopped him on the field before he went in the dugout and said, oh, you're throwing a hundred yesterday. And then what'd you say, Jim?
