In north central NM, we live in a Juniper forest and must line the bottom of the bed or else thirsty tree roots grow up into the bed and interfere with plant roots. The company who built the bed (3 tiers of concrete blocks with a 12” kiln dried Western Red Cedar “bed” on top) also placed a 4’ x 8’ sheet of Medex board under it to keep the tree roots out primarily. Then there’s approximately 3’ of high-grade (bulk) raised bed mix. Then plants to beautifully as long as protected from our ongoing strong winds with either a summer or winter cover. It also has micro drip, which clogs easily and I do not recommend. Since we receive little rain, i simply hand water every other day. With multiple beds, a functional irrigation system would need be devised. But, hardware cloth (1/4” grid?) would be a good, and maybe better, solution that also allows for earth worms to get in. My biggest problem is Rolly Pollies. Theynlove the moisture and can be seeing almost covering the top of the soil. I wish I knew what to do about them. Anyone?
