Episode 81 - Knights - their origins and survival of the long night

The 40k Lorecast

On Today’s cast we begin our coverage of the Knights of 40K. We start with their origins in the Golden age of technology from the early colonists heading out into the galaxy with their STC’s. From there we talk about the Age of Strife separating the colonists from the rest of human civilization, but with a focus on how the Knight worlds survived. We than talk about the throne Mechanicum and the ritual of becoming, focusing on how they change the psyche of the pilots. More importantly, we talk about how this change affect the knight pilots to become better leaders and protectors of their subjects. We then close with a breakdown of the noble culture and knights themselves.

[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Forty K-Lorecast.
[SPEAKER_01]: Welcome to the Forty Kaylorcast with me, John Barsati and Brad Chester.
[SPEAKER_01]: On today's episode, we're going to start our coverage of Knights and Knights.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just really their history and some of that stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: That is cool tightens, but continue.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we get the tightens later.
[SPEAKER_01]: For those new Forty K lower castes, a weekly podcast releasing every Monday at seven PM Eastern Time with a focus in the lore of the Warhammer Forty K universe.
[SPEAKER_01]: In our show notes, you'll see links to our website, the Forty K lower cast.com, our Patreon and our Discord.
[SPEAKER_01]: For those of you who haven't, please follow and comment on the cast that helps us out a ton and improves our algorithm a lot.
[SPEAKER_02]: What does this episode?
[SPEAKER_02]: So it took what?
[SPEAKER_02]: Sixty episodes for you not to say like and subscribe.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm proud of you.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know, I've just, you just, you know, monkey, see monkey do people keep saying like and subscribe.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I realize we're not on YouTube.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there it is.
[SPEAKER_01]: But on the more comments and the follows that we get, the more we're spreading new listeners, which is a big deal, everyone.
[SPEAKER_02]: For whatever reason, the algorithm, if we can get people talking, you can talk,
[SPEAKER_02]: Crafter us if you want to.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it legitimately helps.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, honestly, it's whatever is kind of my thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not doing this for me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm doing this for fans like I hope people like what we're doing or making this for you, but I am kind of a competitive boob.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so, at its core, then when I ask everyone to make comments and follow, it's not because I actually get anything out of it, it directly, what I get out of it is that we get ranked ahead of people who I don't like.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I get to know that that made them sad, and that makes me happy.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I desperately hoping that someone will like and appreciate anything that I do before I die.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, Brad's on that boat.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just, I just really enjoy.
[SPEAKER_01]: We had a little bit of a run there where we got ahead of some pretty big podcasts.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I just hope we're so happy about people with specific individuals.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, I didn't care.
[SPEAKER_01]: Brad was like, we're like, forty if in the entire world, I'm like, I don't just like, I didn't care because all I cared about is we were ahead of some people who I severely disliked and stopped drinking that hatred.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was great.
[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, if you go to our website, you can find links to our merchandise, which is awesome.
[SPEAKER_02]: Please get some of my merch.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's so good.
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually is very good.
[SPEAKER_01]: Brad's coaching services, Brad cheating on me with Allen with his other podcast.
[SPEAKER_01]: And also links to our other events.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you go to my other cast, please leave a comment.
[SPEAKER_01]: Our discord is also the available.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a totally free server as built with you all in mind.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was designed as a place so you can interact with the cast itself.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I'm not that self-important.
[SPEAKER_01]: It also is about forty-k literature, forty-k gameplay, hobby means.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're just general for the idea was to give a place if you like what we're doing here and it's because you like the topic and I hope you're not just only here because you love my voice so much in which case seriously see a doctor.
[SPEAKER_02]: I overthink the other way around if you're here just for my voice.
[SPEAKER_02]: I love everything about you also.
[SPEAKER_02]: John's bannerman get out of the legend of bread channel.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's too many of you.
[SPEAKER_01]: people like me more.
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, with the discord though, it really is a wonderful place.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's very healthy in a good community.
[SPEAKER_01]: So thank you Kevin, Nick, Maisie, Brian, Ethan, Steve, Ryan, Trevor, and David.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sometimes you change that order up a little bit.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just keep copying, pasting it every show note.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks to you guys, we have a discord.
[SPEAKER_01]: So huge.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you to them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Lastly, if you want to play the game of Forty Kay on the table top or online via TTS, Brad has coaching services available, you can find information on our website or you can link to it through our Discord.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thirty years of experience, Brad's not bad at it.
[SPEAKER_01]: You want a few events.
[SPEAKER_01]: One every year since, two thousand.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see.
[SPEAKER_02]: I'll still win something in shape.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll see, exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: But no matter your experience level, Brad actually has more and more on the experience coaching a person like you, and that's what makes him a very good coach.
[SPEAKER_01]: No matter he's not going to make you on day one, be like, okay, well, here's your prep for a forty-two round.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and then Jerry in Las Vegas, where the lights only work half the time.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, type set up.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's his, Brad designs his coaching around the needs of his customers.
[SPEAKER_02]: Nothing makes me sadder and happier at the same time than Kevin and Nick.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, literally handling all the things with Brad has health issues, so they may take a little while to contact you.
[SPEAKER_02]: And like, thank you.
[SPEAKER_01]: But also, I told him just make the bot say it automatically.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks for your contact.
[SPEAKER_01]: Brad's currently in the hospital.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, let's dive into nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: So imperial night origins are pretty interesting.
[SPEAKER_01]: They actually come back from the age of technology.
[SPEAKER_01]: So M. fifteen.
[SPEAKER_01]: So this is fifteen thousand years before the emperor left in the twenty five thousand years before current forty.
[SPEAKER_02]: Right, it was twenty six.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's true.
[SPEAKER_02]: Which is funny because this time you're like, you're a thousand years off.
[SPEAKER_02]: That seems like a big deal.
[SPEAKER_01]: But in forty kids.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this was a really good time.
[SPEAKER_01]: kind of for the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is before the Eldar, so the Eldar civilization that is at their peak, the pleasure cults are just beginning to form but not heavy.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the warp was mostly tranquil.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a good time for humanity because we're at our pinnacle of technology and we haven't, we're about to, but we haven't had any
[SPEAKER_02]: It's internal, we have an internal strike, but also this is at the height of the elder civilization, but it's also at the height of their giving no shifts.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, the elder civilization at this point are in their peak, but they're not, the reasons are good for humanity.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're not an expansion at all.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were, they have the, this is, they've got enough of the galaxy that they're just content and they're focusing on their things.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're apathetic now because they've gotten to that point.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is where the pleasure culture about to stone.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a great time for humanity because Eldar could rack us at any time, but they don't because they're so apathetic they don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's all the way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Although it's the way the Eldar spread through the galaxy is they actually were pretty close to Saul, which is interesting, but that's a side note for me.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, they're real close.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we're in the front of the cast.
[SPEAKER_02]: But they just don't they don't bother, which is a great time for us because
[SPEAKER_02]: We're just putting it on there and we kind of just don't go where the original humanity was really good about we'll get into that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I X disagree with that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we did go there, but just they're all dead.
[SPEAKER_01]: They didn't matter.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was smoking.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we probably expanded out in the circle that part of that circle got got clipped real quick.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: That was also when they went, we would reprise that we were very lucky that all of our were such doucheys because they were like, we do something about it.
[SPEAKER_02]: But why?
[SPEAKER_01]: They're wife, father.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was snaddy with their monoclonne.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's what that's kind of what I think.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the rest of the galaxy though also is equally in check.
[SPEAKER_01]: The orcs are kind of a little bit stuck on the other side of the Eldar and the Eldar and more importantly with the orcs were very aware because they came up together of how dangerous the orcs were.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're doing so they were hundred percent preempt to structure all your all the time.
[SPEAKER_01]: There were no was affected.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were smoking them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm storing that there were no orc was until basically around the time of the Great Crusade.
[SPEAKER_02]: I wasn't charred because they couldn't do it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Tyrannys are not in the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Votan, no matter what the origin story don't exist, town don't exist.
[SPEAKER_01]: How actually do not exist at this time?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's without town do not exist.
[SPEAKER_01]: Not even you making fun of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: They really, it was a really good time for the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_01]: The... Sorry.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sorry, that was just me.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, good.
[SPEAKER_02]: John, coming in from left view, knocking it out of the park.
[SPEAKER_01]: the necrons are all asleep, even I think, Trajan at this point is still asleep.
[SPEAKER_02]: The person is, the, the silica is the only one that's right.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, but he's on dark.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's pouting.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he's out in dark space.
[SPEAKER_01]: The moving his way to a totally different.
[SPEAKER_01]: The millions of years of meditation, but the most important part though, outside of the town, not existing is that there's no chaos.
[SPEAKER_01]: And when I say chaos, I mean,
[SPEAKER_01]: The chaos gods, obviously, are being to wake up, but Slonesh has not been born yet.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're still in their infancy.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's no demonic incursions occurring into the galaxy, obviously, no chaos space marines.
[SPEAKER_01]: So for humanity, so long as they didn't, as we were just announcing, bump into an L-d-r world, they were kind of free to conquer it.
[SPEAKER_01]: There were obviously other Zenos that probably would have put up a fight, a early raggedon.
[SPEAKER_02]: But we're not going to stop smoking them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, I mean, we don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're probably.
[SPEAKER_02]: But they say the age of technology, we had pretty bananas.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Actually, it wasn't even military tech.
[SPEAKER_02]: We were so much better at analyzing worlds back.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's talk about that because that's actually a really good transition to STC's.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we've talked about it before an STC stands for Standard Template Construct.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thank you.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a geek.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's what it is.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you don't know what a geek is, stop listening to the cast, go download Fallout One, and just be an enjoy the better life I just made for you.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because now you've lived your life after playing Fallout.
[SPEAKER_01]: Also, you're welcome.
[SPEAKER_01]: Your life is legitimately better.
[SPEAKER_01]: So these STCs or gecks were designed so that when mankind could go out, they were fully capable of colonizing and controlling the worlds.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I like this a lot.
[SPEAKER_01]: The concept of an STC is that when you land somewhere, you turn the STC on.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it contains all the stuff it needs to build whatever is meant to design.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're all unique in purpose.
[SPEAKER_01]: So one would build like a chair.
[SPEAKER_01]: Another one would build a toast.
[SPEAKER_02]: They didn't hold full habitats and everything like that.
[SPEAKER_02]: But they can be as expansive as you want, because some more in charge of, hey, you need to build the infrastructure of a city.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they went, no problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: An STC would build an entire factory at one STC.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, well, the funny thing is is that there's some of them because they talk about it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, add necklaces.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Some STCs are like, what does this STC do?
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like, it makes ice cream.
[SPEAKER_02]: And the other one made a full city's infrastructure.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, and these were the same thing in the next one built a plasma cannon that's that could crack a planet.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, they're all next to each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, what did you roll the dice on each one?
[SPEAKER_01]: and both of the record they add next to press the on button on all of them the exact same way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like this will work great.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is ice cream.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have a mouth.
[SPEAKER_01]: This thing sucks.
[SPEAKER_02]: Screw you call.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the biggest piece is the STC's used for the planets.
[SPEAKER_01]: The first big one obviously was terraforming.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the terraforming of the planets, so they would actually build the terraformers because they would land the planet and it's a galaxy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Every planet's a little bit different, but humanity isn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we have very narrow band that we can survive in.
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we're issuing anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's too hot or it's too cold.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's sci-fi.
[SPEAKER_01]: This none of this would ever actually work in reality.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's impossible.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was the best part about the STC's old-man kind.
[SPEAKER_02]: Age of technology.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: was terror forming things like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was a nothing thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: However, the terror forming is.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's the reason we have millions of worlds is because of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because most of the worlds were terror formed.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, also they were skyhooking.
[SPEAKER_02]: Fenders.
[SPEAKER_02]: STC's onto every.
[SPEAKER_01]: Fenders was a goofy attempt at a weird, uh, terror form.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, that's actually a lot of the worlds that were discovering also the, the vacant ones were terror formed.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, but the thing is, is that they terraformed a ton of worlds that they never even colonize.
[SPEAKER_01]: They just put ST, they, they effectively just see, I just, I've read that, I just, I actually think they fully colonize those worlds and everyone died.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, possibly.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just saying, but we have a ton of tendency to rewrite this, or you're like, yeah, we just sent a terraformer there, you know, with no people whatsoever.
[SPEAKER_02]: There's like, there's like, there's, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a little, there's a
[SPEAKER_01]: I was I was wandering through you know the fertile crescent and there was this thirty foot statue just kind of leaning with with a big free sign on it discovered something yes I'm doing air quotes again I can't see it
[SPEAKER_01]: The bigger piece, though, with the STC's for Forty-K lore, is the weapons.
[SPEAKER_01]: And, oh, no, quickly, as we just said, it's the ad-Mac want nothing more than to find all these weapons, and more often than not, it's terrible when they find them, because they will just flip the on-switch, which, I mean, it might be a planet cracking laser, that happens to be positioned aimed at the current planet.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they flick the switch and go, oops.
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to talk more about the concept of the STC, because it really is genius.
[SPEAKER_01]: The STC, so mankind, when it first began its expansion, didn't have war of travel.
[SPEAKER_01]: They do get it actually in this period.
[SPEAKER_01]: But when it first built the STC, they had no war of travel, which means you had to go at sub-light or just barely above light speed.
[SPEAKER_01]: So these journeys would take generations before they would reach their target.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's impossible, functionally, to hand down manufacturing technology through multiple generations without them physically.
[SPEAKER_02]: Having to do any.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: A theory is just, it doesn't translate.
[SPEAKER_02]: And abstract concepts.
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so what would happen is you, if they'd done it without STC's, the conjugate would just land.
[SPEAKER_01]: and some great great engineer when you try to figure out how to turn a plasma cannon on and then they would all die.
[SPEAKER_01]: So instead this was designed that you just kind of just kept the colonists alive and not in like the wally style.
[SPEAKER_01]: And movie mini cry, by the way, it was so good, but I have only seen it once because it was so sad.
[SPEAKER_01]: The idea is that with the plants land, the STC's kick-on, and then it makes them the colonists need it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Even later when the navigators were created, which we don't know where they're coming from, so I say created, because... Also, humanity's been douchees.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: By the entire time, there's a hundred percent chance that we thought there was a...
[SPEAKER_02]: mutation, and we went, cool, only let these people talk about their mutation.
[SPEAKER_01]: Even with work travel, though, as we discussed before, and I was going to bring up work travels not instant.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we went from what was what might have taken a two hundred year journey is now down to a eleven year journey, which is a lot better than two hundred years, but in eleven years, you still do have turnover of population.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the STC still are critical.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, this is a cast about nights, so let's talk about the STC's and nights.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about the fact that nights weren't just the awesome
[SPEAKER_02]: robots of war originally.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like the original form of a night was, yes, it had a bunch of these offensive.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was a devastating thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: But it also had three different shoveling.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, if you build a night when you buy a night kit for the most part of me, some are different.
[SPEAKER_01]: But if your night kit has arms on, you could build a night that has no weapons on it.
[SPEAKER_01]: You shouldn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: But you could.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, that's how they all were.
[SPEAKER_01]: There are multifunctional things.
[SPEAKER_01]: So during the age of technology,
[SPEAKER_01]: mankind was sending probes basically around the galaxy, as well as high-powered telescopes, that's kind of scalp potential systems.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they knew kind of where they could land and colonize, and they have the terraforming capabilities.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the issue with that is that you don't know what's there, what's truly there till you get there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so part of that is twofold.
[SPEAKER_01]: One, defensively, the more importantly the work you have to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: So you'd land on a planet and the STCs would kick on.
[SPEAKER_01]: And these massive ships I actually should mention, the ships, the colony ships had people in them, but they also had a horde of raw materials for the STCs.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yo, humanity, by the way, one of the things that we do is we
[SPEAKER_02]: Are they the best ships?
[SPEAKER_02]: Nope.
[SPEAKER_02]: Nope.
[SPEAKER_02]: But are they the biggest wildly by far?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the ships were designed to land with all this cargo in this ship and actually the ship themselves would be cannibalized into the original settlement.
[SPEAKER_01]: So within a couple weeks of landing, you've got a small city.
[SPEAKER_01]: And not just like, you know, like housing, you've got manufacturing and agriculture forifications.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the nights are one of these big pieces because at their core, a night's nothing more than a bipedal robot.
[SPEAKER_01]: which allows, and that's important because tracks are better for a lot of things, but moving across unpredictable terrain, legs are better.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so these things would come, the nights would come through and actually do a lot of the initial work.
[SPEAKER_01]: They would, you know, like the, the loader, Ripley's in in aliens, same concept.
[SPEAKER_01]: It would pick up heavy things.
[SPEAKER_01]: I love this, cause you're just like,
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's an Victor Wersu.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, that's right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah, the Victor Wersu is a one hundred percent rip off of the aliens like it's not even subtle.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have the same has a same like the way the guys the guys arms are in it and the cage around it, which I also want to point out.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just shoot the dude.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why is it not high toughness?
[SPEAKER_01]: Why can't I just roll a six to shoot the dude?
[SPEAKER_02]: I saw matrix.
[SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes you got to put a screen door in front of that guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just throwing it out there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the nights, the original nights help the original colonists with a lot of activities.
[SPEAKER_01]: The arms would pick up heavy structures or slabs.
[SPEAKER_01]: The actual affair, one is the chain sort that they have was actually designed to clear forests.
[SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, it could clear other things.
[SPEAKER_02]: One of my favorites is some of the most powerful weapons in a night who are actually mining.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're mining lasers.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a hundred and mining lasers.
[SPEAKER_01]: They also had some drills, too, but they had miners to blow apart rocks.
[SPEAKER_01]: So these giant knights would walk over to became a quarry.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they're really cool killing other stuff, but they were meant for boring into mountains.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were also built for war, obviously.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the age of technology,
[SPEAKER_01]: This came up a lot, because this was also the age of the meta-viron, which just FYI, I think we're got to do a cast soon on the age of technology.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they just started because writing these notes, I got into it.
[SPEAKER_02]: So, we had a problem with AI, click just plainness.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so ends up happening.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're talking about the, Brad was discussing earlier, how important this part of history was from a technology standpoint.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is M-A-T-N-M-Twenty-Two.
[SPEAKER_01]: In that era, we have the highest level of technology in the Imperial.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a pair that it is right now.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, by a wide one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Volkite plasma.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's coming from this era.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the impuronites armaments followed this because as much as we talked about the night being helpful, they also would land on building the settlement.
[SPEAKER_01]: They also would land on planets that were under claim or occupation from Zeno species.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is a period of time where mankind is just mankind.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's no space Marines, there's no custodes, Simon Skittari.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you know, they had some genetic alteration, but not enough.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's one thing that we're, we actually did progress farther than them.
[SPEAKER_02]: They were much better in everything that was in civilization, regular civilization.
[SPEAKER_02]: But even back then, very squishy.
[SPEAKER_02]: Humanity was still
[SPEAKER_02]: Very excited.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're excited.
[SPEAKER_02]: Squishy, but also let's go with the, why do we make nights?
[SPEAKER_02]: Because every time we met somebody that wasn't humans, we have bed and we always will be dicks about me.
[SPEAKER_01]: We've had some differences of opinions.
[SPEAKER_02]: And so we eliminated everybody we met.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, and that's what would happen is effectively mankind would make planet fall on a non-elder planet because if it was an elder planet, they don't get to make planet fall.
[SPEAKER_01]: You have other races would kind of come to fight at this point if they're on the planet.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think they would have bumped into orcs if they had orcs or what did they have to do?
[SPEAKER_02]: Really far away at this point.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I don't, the raggedan weren't that far off though.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's the question, but this is well, there's a real thing there.
[SPEAKER_02]: We could have met the raggedan early because raggedan was
[SPEAKER_01]: eight is an inch right is but we don't know it's all those all of them we don't know where they're from but the nights at their side the humanity really could just colonize anything they wanted to colonize again unless it was the elder because the elder were just like that's an adorable night meet our version of it he just he did three backflips he's it's literally like you have like robby the robot and we have certainly yeah we have a power Ranger
[SPEAKER_01]: But all of this in M- twenty two starts to get weird.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, let's talk about why it started here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: He made it.
[SPEAKER_02]: He started it has some issues, but all that broke the sky.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's beginning.
[SPEAKER_01]: So M. twenty two is when the warp starts to really start to shift around a lot, which is when they're already breaking.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they have no, they broke the sky in M. thirty.
[SPEAKER_02]: They started to break the, well, they started to break at the upside down.
[SPEAKER_01]: There we go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that better.
[SPEAKER_02]: We get the first Cycras start to appear and you're like,
[SPEAKER_01]: Is that their fault?
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the moment that the first Cycars begin to pop up and this is like This is a problem because first off the early Cycars are like thirty percent helpful like seventy percent terrible.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that's a terrible percentage.
[SPEAKER_01]: You think it's way more the other I think it's terrible.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now any of the five percent every story we get from old the original origin of Cycars is Cycars murdering everybody who knows who wrote those stories
[SPEAKER_01]: Just saying, like, according to the Ecclesiarchy, the letters are bad.
[SPEAKER_01]: Thanks.
[SPEAKER_02]: Have they ever put on a falsehood?
[SPEAKER_02]: Teracy, John.
[SPEAKER_02]: Heresy.
[SPEAKER_01]: will be right back after a quick break.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the colonies, what ends up happening is that this starts to lead the first chunk, which is civil war just in the colonies.
[SPEAKER_01]: So these cycles, a lot of places become warlords, and they start trying to get control of the planet, which starts devolving this age into, you know, just anarchy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Then it gets a lot worse because in M- twenty three, what's called this cybernetic revolt begins.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is when the men of iron turned on humanity.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's pause on that because we're going to do a whole thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to do a whole cast.
[SPEAKER_02]: The amount of iron aren't just our fighting force.
[SPEAKER_02]: The amount of iron did, yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, that's a great thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Agriculture construction, everything.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the amount of iron went on strike, which wouldn't have been as bad as the fact that part of them going on strike was also murder.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a lot of some pretty good amages here to Karl Marx.
[SPEAKER_01]: And like, oh, just what if the proletariat completely stood up and murdered bourgeoisie?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, well, we completely gave our civilization over to the men of iron as far as everything that's day to day function.
[SPEAKER_01]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so what happens is humanity goes to war with these robots, which unfortunately,
[SPEAKER_01]: double hits them because first off, they're trying to kill robots, which has never goes very well.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they're getting slaughtered by them.
[SPEAKER_01]: At the same time, though, the robots aren't producing food.
[SPEAKER_01]: So even if you beat them, you starve to death.
[SPEAKER_01]: But then the last and worst part hits right after.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is an explosion of warp storms.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, around this, just as a cybernetic revolt is really kind of going, Solanesh starts to form in the warp.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this turns the warp into like an apocalyptic level storm.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you turn the blender on frappings.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't see anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: So in a matter of about a few years,
[SPEAKER_02]: every human colony in the entire galaxy is, well, there's a complete AI revolt and you have no information.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: And so you basically went, you got an email that said, hey, all of our society, the AI is revolting.
[SPEAKER_02]: And you will get no, and you're on your own.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the response for the happens is basically every single human colony that's not really in the same system as other as another colony is totally isolated.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the ones that are in the systems are isolated.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, and by the way, some of the ones that are in the same system go to war with each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: This whole thing just sucks.
[SPEAKER_01]: Unless you were on a night road.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is actually crazy and I'm going to give props to this because I'm not a huge night guy, but during this time, nights and when ended up being the cast and the families of nights.
[SPEAKER_02]: became badass.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the nights have a very interesting mechanic.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the machines into utilization.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't just pile it a night by sitting on a cockpit and moving lever.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're not coming.
[SPEAKER_02]: You had so many opportunities to say one does not simply pile it a night.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Come on.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was lame.
[SPEAKER_02]: That was awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was lame.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like fuck.
[SPEAKER_01]: This isn't me messing with Brad because he's all excited about something and I used to do this to make him sad and say, this is terrible.
[SPEAKER_02]: This one.
[SPEAKER_01]: So all the nights have a basic means of control.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like function.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can actually use it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Instead, the pilot is hardwired into the night and they become one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Basically like Pacific Rim, but just one person.
[SPEAKER_01]: which side know, I really want to like Pacific Rim.
[SPEAKER_01]: I really do.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's got some great scenes in it, but the acting is so painful.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just, it's hard to watch it.
[SPEAKER_01]: The second one's even worse.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just so like the entire, everything about Pacific Rim except for the monster fight was terrible.
[SPEAKER_02]: And they could have just did it that whole and kind of an half of the sword.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it just, we're good.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's all I'm saying.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, so I do a lot of stuff that people can't see.
[SPEAKER_01]: You do.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, it's a, Brad's a very visual.
[SPEAKER_01]: We should do podcasts.
[SPEAKER_01]: There has to at some point in time.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I don't feel like we have to get, I get cameras.
[SPEAKER_01]: It just works.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you guys want to see what Brad looks like in the dark, you can go to his other cast.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're always in the dark.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because lights hurt my head.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, I just want to point out, like, you know, it's really good for you with migraines, a big bright light in front of their face.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's the worst.
[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, back to the nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: So kind of the black carapuses for the space marines, the pilots able to interact completely with a night around him and control because especially night has two arms, two legs, but it's also like eleven weapons systems and a bunch of other things.
[SPEAKER_01]: So you have to be hard-wired to be able to take it all in.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now, the flip side, though, is there is a side effect to this.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how you become a pilot of a night.
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to sit in something called the Throne Mechanicum.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Throne Mechanicum is just a pod.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the pod is sensory deprivation pod.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but it's super cool because a pod that you separate from a night where like by this is that the way you, you, this can we're jumping ahead, but it's a cool thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: the way a pilot pilots a night which better way for you to say that probably anyway is they get into the pod and all the linkages connect to them then the pod itself is inserted into the night and it connects that way which makes a lot of sense because nights are between nine and twelve meters thirty to forty feet tall
[SPEAKER_01]: And you have to have a bunch of servants loading the pilot in to the Thorn Mechanicum.
[SPEAKER_01]: So just do that basically on a ground floor and then drop it into the night versus having to have everyone climb all the way up with you and do it that way.
[SPEAKER_01]: So yeah, it's clever idea.
[SPEAKER_01]: Way to go, GW.
[SPEAKER_01]: But on the Thorn Mechanicum, not everyone can get into it.
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to go through training in order to interact with it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Although it'll be honest, the training's not that involved.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like they wrote this whole thing out about you, I feel like you have to train for it's always practice.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's one day.
[SPEAKER_01]: you go and you sit in it and you have to you test out to an aspirant goes and sits on a mechanical and they're plugged into it for one evening.
[SPEAKER_02]: You also forgot the fact that occasionally people.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we're going to get there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I hear me come from the same.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're like the space for that process is like a year.
[SPEAKER_01]: These guys like, it's a really involved process to become a pot for a night.
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to do some cardio.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Then you have to like, you know, do some studying.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to go into this if you locked if you locked into the throwing mechanic him.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh my god.
[SPEAKER_01]: Is it like a month?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like we go in at night and then and then a son up we open it and see how you're doing.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they basically plug you in and if you don't die, they they then you're good.
[SPEAKER_02]: However, they just hose that off.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just been still, it's eight hours.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting it.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Anyway, so over the course of the night, the aspirants mind in this situation will kind of basically wrestle with a throne itself.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this is because the throne is a machine spirit.
[SPEAKER_01]: What they're actually doing is they're actually merging themselves with a machine spirit and a mind meld.
[SPEAKER_01]: And over the course of the night, the Brad's point, some are driven insane.
[SPEAKER_01]: Others just are just killed.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is the machine, somebody just melts their brain.
[SPEAKER_01]: Interestingly, though, the fatality numbers for this can be as low as ten percent.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel that these are lies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Some, it can be some.
[SPEAKER_01]: But certain certain night families just say that everything works out because the other part is, it can be up to fifty percent of people who go in their die.
[SPEAKER_01]: But when up out, that versus custodes and space Marines is still there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a pretty good, especially custodes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a pretty good return investment.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's all I'm getting at.
[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway, there are two outcomes of this process.
[SPEAKER_01]: The first one is the aspirant now can interface with a throne mechanic.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they can now, you know, as their past is ritual, it's called a ritual of becoming.
[SPEAKER_01]: After they pass that, they can forever link and take control of the night without these dangers happening again.
[SPEAKER_01]: The second one, though, is more important.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're actually changed mentally.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, forever.
[SPEAKER_02]: Wildly so.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so the process of this implanting with the Throne Mechanicum is a two-way process.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, really, it's actually just one way, but I'm going to say two way.
[SPEAKER_01]: The pilot.
[SPEAKER_01]: What's the other way?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, the pilot has to, you're right, because the machine spirit is taking anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: Basically, you're right, it's a one-way process.
[SPEAKER_01]: The pilot takes on the machine spirit into their own spirit and being.
[SPEAKER_01]: and this spirit actually changes their brain.
[SPEAKER_01]: So what we first thing you see is once an individual goes through this process, their personality flips to being more like
[SPEAKER_02]: They have they completely come on they it doesn't just you're like by personality change right now.
[SPEAKER_01]: They become sass when you're genuinely obsessed.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, anyone who's read like a book on like a fantasy story about nights in shivori.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's that which I want to make a I'm going to do a little john side title.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to make everything sucks.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because we need to, this drives me nuts.
[SPEAKER_01]: They talk about like, oh, it's, I'm about night and shivari.
[SPEAKER_01]: And who's red history knows medieval nights or a freaking nightmare.
[SPEAKER_01]: They are horrible.
[SPEAKER_01]: The code of shivari actually really only applies to battling other nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is, but it also durable people.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everything, the King Arthur stories are adorable.
[SPEAKER_01]: The original, not the one with like, I'll fight you if you bring up all this stuff.
[SPEAKER_02]: What?
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't, don't besmirch the good King Arthur.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, which good King Arthur?
[SPEAKER_01]: There's the King Arthur books and there's the better one who has an exceptional knowledge of the flight patterns of Swallows, be with African and European.
[SPEAKER_01]: Again.
[SPEAKER_02]: I didn't even want to change that quote.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't remember every chance I get.
[SPEAKER_01]: But this, the obsession with honor and duty for these nights, yeah, comes out of nowhere.
[SPEAKER_01]: It is, it, it, it appears immediately after the ritual is over and it's a true obsession becomes their singular purpose.
[SPEAKER_01]: The second piece they take on as part of this is really weird ego boost.
[SPEAKER_01]: They start to view themselves as selected for greatness by a higher power.
[SPEAKER_01]: The machine spirit shows them not another to be able to power what is a god machine.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so this is because of their own superiority.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, this does become a little bit of a, when you're trying to fight with other nights, because they're a little competitive.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're wildly competitive.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this competitive spirit is interesting, because they become massive ego tests.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so they focus all their efforts on proving they are the most honorable and most loyal.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this will definitely cause a ton of problems later.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know what I want to say unless as much as I sometimes don't like nights on the table, the nightly honors, the imperial nights, the loyalist forces nights have great lore to table top the nightly
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, they're pretty good.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're due to me.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have to choose, you know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they're weaponry doesn't, but yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, no.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just saying this.
[SPEAKER_02]: I just laugh at that.
[SPEAKER_02]: The old thing you have to choose and everything else we can't remember.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like a night with a goldsmith.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just a funny concept.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have the last guns.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, with the last guns.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I will say lethal hit last guns.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, taking stumps, taking stumps out of the game.
[SPEAKER_02]: is a kind of a strategy, but it also made, it made so much sense that my night that nights in eighth and eighth and ninth didn't could just walk up to you as guards in the just step on you and kill you and move on with the fact that a twenty man actually just go with a fifty man conscripts and just go first rank second rank yeah and put lethal hits on them at a night would die the night would know that landscapes are being fired at it
[SPEAKER_01]: Number of eighth edition when you can tag a night and it couldn't shoot weapons because there was a single grot near its toe.
[SPEAKER_01]: So none of its weapons systems were so stupid.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oops.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: I might not even know you're there.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm about back to the cast.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the cool thing about these changes mentally, they're happening to the power of the night is it appears that they were done intentionally.
[SPEAKER_01]: not a side effect, but actually, like something that was built in the CSTCs.
[SPEAKER_01]: And this makes sense, because when we talk about honor and duty and these types of things, and this is a person plugged into a war machine.
[SPEAKER_01]: They are a massive threat.
[SPEAKER_01]: You could wipe out the entire city that you're there to protect.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_02]: And they would have, you want this guy to have duty and honor as his girlfriend, so that he doesn't go, hey, I'm now warlord Ted.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so what they into the belief is that the early, I mean, this is before the mechanic, this is the, the ordinance even further back.
[SPEAKER_01]: Again, yeah, twenty thousand, twenty one, twenty six thousand, twenty six thousand years.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they built this with the pilots would have this weird duty and honor to everyone around them.
[SPEAKER_01]: This would prevent them from ever turning on the population.
[SPEAKER_01]: So as we said, not all human colonies had nights by the way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Very few.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it was a, it's a very small percentage.
[SPEAKER_01]: However, all the night worlds ended up in a similar situation.
[SPEAKER_01]: The implant print of the ritual created this kind of uniform psyche amongst all the night pilots.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's kind of hard for me to explain this in a linear fashion.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm going to GW wrote this all in terms that from a full history standpoint are positive.
[SPEAKER_01]: But again, I'm going back into this again, actual history, they're horrifying.
[SPEAKER_02]: So they became feudalism because they had houses.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, and so let's just get the right to get this royalty.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, or it's I wasn't royalty.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was no ability.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let me get this out of the way because I need to do this.
[SPEAKER_01]: We have because obviously thanks the disc or I do know we have quite a few people who let's know our cast who are pretty serious history buffs.
[SPEAKER_01]: feudalism was an absolute nightmare.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, being out of the kings and the lords exploited anyone and everyone below them that at a horrifying level that made that it was slavery effect.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was effect.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was effective slavery.
[SPEAKER_01]: Um, the great nights of legends are actually nothing more than brutal mercenaries that would actually rape and pillage.
[SPEAKER_01]: Blessed settlements constantly make everything stop.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because people are going to listen to this, and I can't, from a moral standpoint, talk about feudalism.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, wasn't it great?
[SPEAKER_01]: It wasn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: It got its sucked.
[SPEAKER_01]: It sucked.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were basically pirates more than they were nobility.
[SPEAKER_01]: But the feudalism of legend is one of positivity.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, nobleman going on quest to kill evil kings, acquire lost relics, write the wrongs of society.
[SPEAKER_02]: just saying my Britonian army in fantasy with sweet ass banners and cool colors looks pretty awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: He does, but in reality, they were a nightmare.
[SPEAKER_01]: So when we use the term feudalism here, we're using the feudal term that's associated with fantasy, like King Arthur, not with anyone who's right a book.
[SPEAKER_01]: So anyway.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is John, making things terrible.
[SPEAKER_01]: I need to do this.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's just, it's something that's always driven from, you know what I think's awesome?
[SPEAKER_01]: Sweet banners.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's an option.
[SPEAKER_01]: The psyche that infected all of the pilots of the Knights made them view society from an awesome them perspective, but in kind of, but with a positive swing.
[SPEAKER_01]: The pilots of these nights were nobles, but they viewed themselves as being tasked with protecting and caring for all their subjects.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the subjects job, which is to live their lives and help grow the kingdom.
[SPEAKER_01]: Knowing they were safe from harm, thanks to these noble nights that were always watching over them.
[SPEAKER_02]: This kind of worked though.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, because again, it's not real, so it works perfectly.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the nights did it.
[SPEAKER_01]: They looked over the population where their giant walkers, they would kill
[SPEAKER_01]: There's also things actively trying to kill.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and they did a great job in these massive warmen.
[SPEAKER_01]: And not only actually, not only would they kill the enemies of the people, but they also used their giant machines to help with the work of the settlement by these earlier mining, agriculture, whatever, clearing a forest with their giant chainsawed.
[SPEAKER_01]: These were great.
[SPEAKER_01]: So over time, all of the night worlds turned into these feudal kingdoms where the nobility class had an attachment nights, and they just looked over.
[SPEAKER_01]: The population, because obviously over time these polytes had kids, and then those kids joined the ritual of becoming, and so the family became a family of knights, but they also became a family of protectors.
[SPEAKER_01]: And these worlds lived in a true symbiotic relationship.
[SPEAKER_01]: as opposed to, and I'm going to call a book out here, Simplicityus Simplicityus.
[SPEAKER_01]: And for the one or two of you that may know what that is, you'll know what I'm referring to, because dear God real feudalism is horrible.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a book, literally written by a guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a, it's a, the simplest and simplest one of my favorite books.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's written phonetically.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's, it's so hard to read, but it, it, it, it, this guy's talking to his life being like kidnapped and like his watching his mother and sister get raped to death and all these things.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: will be right back after a quick break.
[SPEAKER_01]: So over centuries, these houses and no traditions grew.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll touch more on this later about the fifteen thousand years.
[SPEAKER_01]: So in current forty-k, these noble houses are based on the same as they were back then.
[SPEAKER_01]: Which is kind of a nice piece of evidence of how powerful the machine spirit imprint is in the minds of these pilots.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because no matter who goes to the ritual becoming, they all come out the exact same unless they fall into chaos.
[SPEAKER_02]: So we just accept the fact that the machine spirits and AI.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not though.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not an AI.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's not because it's beyond an AI.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's actually just scarier than an AI.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's totally an AI.
[SPEAKER_01]: When we do our cast on the age of technology, I will make a ton of movie references to what I think machine spirit is, but it's one more man comes to mind.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, good movie.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's a better story.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, not good movies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Two, two, not good movies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Cool concepts.
[SPEAKER_01]: Two, not good movies.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, maybe you get it.
[SPEAKER_02]: So now James Bond was in that one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, I mean, not good James Bond.
[SPEAKER_01]: All right, so there is a really important side effect though of this feudal rule, as circles back to how we were discussing earlier.
[SPEAKER_01]: All these societies had a very strong leadership structure, and this society were structured, there was true symbiosis between the nobility and the rule class.
[SPEAKER_01]: So when these first cycles start to appear, they got snuffed out on the knife.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, it was just snuffed out.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, quick quick.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because it was a two for the nobility didn't want Mike, these upstart's great getting powers, but also the ruling class were writing the map because they were like, hey, we've got a good gig going and I don't really need a revolution right now.
[SPEAKER_01]: So as a result,
[SPEAKER_01]: The age of technology turned into the age of strife.
[SPEAKER_01]: The night world's really weren't that effective.
[SPEAKER_01]: So long as they had, you know, even though even the men of iron rebellion or demon possessed, you know, they had nights, they were able to deal with them.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think the night world's even do about demonic possession because they killed the psychers so fast.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it probably was like some psychers.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a villager on the side of the planet.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they were like, you got a bunch of weird things.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know,
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, when you've been a psycher for six days of night shows.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he can't even go burn.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he didn't with a volcano cannon.
[SPEAKER_02]: Was he a psycher?
[SPEAKER_02]: Was he a demon?
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a crater there now.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I want to go look.
[SPEAKER_01]: So what happens is, as long as the planets had enough food to feed themselves, they survived.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so from there, I actually think we should spend a little bit of time talking about the structure of a night world and how these societies are designed.
[SPEAKER_01]: So list of the structure of the night houses and the societies that they're a part of.
[SPEAKER_01]: So effectively, there's multiple types and styles of nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're just organized big to small.
[SPEAKER_01]: The largest platforms are the rarest.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I might talk about titans, just big nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: We'll talk about titans in next cast.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, your largest hit your case, this pattern, these are just massive hooking nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're incredibly rare.
[SPEAKER_01]: They would only have gone to a world that was being held as basically inactive combat.
[SPEAKER_01]: They mostly only consisted on Mars itself.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but Lance here's an atropeless.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, but those are small, then this.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the case this is even is that's those are the, um, it's like the, the largest trace.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the next one of yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: The next one are the dominance, which, um, in addition, had castlins, which I believe are missed by no one.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think anyone is like, man, I wish we still had castlins at table time.
[SPEAKER_01]: after that is what you would have to think of.
[SPEAKER_01]: The serrest is pattern was pretty cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were this like they're a super fast night.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were made for it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, which is don't know why.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, you had a lot of, a lot of the, any of these, they appear.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're actually really, really fast.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: You have something that can answer.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're, one of actually the better looking notes in my opinion.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have the most common balance.
[SPEAKER_02]: The answer looks so awesome when that, I mean, it's stupid, but it's awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's done shield.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: It looks cool though.
[SPEAKER_01]: It does.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you're like, oh, it doesn't, it's not very big.
[SPEAKER_02]: Also, it has a power shield around the entire thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, the entire thing has an eye on shields, but at least there's a dude holding something.
[SPEAKER_01]: It looks awesome.
[SPEAKER_02]: It does look cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: The most common variation of the quest tourist pattern.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is when we think about forty k-nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is where this is this is it's a quest tourist.
[SPEAKER_01]: And by the way, all these, I should mention these are all chassies, every single one of them.
[SPEAKER_01]: So every, every world you got this chassie, and then you would customize it based on your needs.
[SPEAKER_01]: The last one, though, actually, I'll bring us at this one because I'm bringing this up in a second.
[SPEAKER_01]: Is it armagers?
[SPEAKER_01]: Which are just baby nights?
[SPEAKER_01]: These are maybe a fast skirmish.
[SPEAKER_01]: Sure, you know, it's able to hunt and pack effectively to achieve the same value as a big night because they would use their mobility instead of armor for protection.
[SPEAKER_01]: The reason I bring this up is it has to do it the way a society ends at getting ranked out, because the bigger the night, the bigger the deal.
[SPEAKER_01]: Night, I could be wrong on this, but I do believe that once you've done, if you can interface with, with any, with one night, you can interface with all nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't believe that the different, I think it's the same path.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's weird though, because I thought you were semi tied to that machine spirit.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but that's what.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's your night can blow up and you could do another night, but I still think you don't leave your existing night.
[SPEAKER_01]: What's what I think is, you're, I think the machine spirit is in the throne you sit in.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's throne plugs into the nights.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's got to have a lot of the small, like, drivers become big nitrous.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's why.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, because the way that society is structured in these worlds, the bigger the night, the more important you are.
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you're like, you know, a,
[SPEAKER_01]: lowly, you know, new, noble.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're going to drive an armature, but if you actually become successful, you could end up being running a castellin.
[SPEAKER_02]: Is that why people running work lives go crazy and run at you at my own thousand?
[SPEAKER_01]: I just wait people with the play nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: This does, although the funny thing about this though, is that
[SPEAKER_01]: Remember, all of these people who are driving these things do have just a fun little side note.
[SPEAKER_01]: Have a little bit of a challenge or mentally they're all obsessed with honoring glory and being the best and honoring.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the smaller the night, the more psychopathic the driver probably is to try and prove themselves to get further up, which means the small week nights are the least reliable because they're not going to follow up plan.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're going to fly at it and go anywhere and try and get glory for themselves.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you overextending work life.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, and I'm going to make two comments at one.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's still the case in the for the first millennia in the lower and two as soon to plays against nights every now and then.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: All you night players, you don't have to come.
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have to charge forward with every single baby night the first time.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, you do.
[SPEAKER_02]: Makes it so much easier to win.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Brad and I both play combat armies.
[SPEAKER_01]: It actually is kind of good for us when all of my models are hidden behind a wall and you put everything in your army and a charge distance.
[SPEAKER_01]: You with your power fist and you with just my orcs.
[SPEAKER_01]: Power claws.
[SPEAKER_01]: What if I just kill all of them?
[SPEAKER_01]: All of these nights though, do have one thing in common.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that is that they're built by an STC and that STC builds the night.
[SPEAKER_01]: The night then from a societal standpoint has to be maintained and improved.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so after conflicts and battles, the nights themselves begin to take damage.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so as we said, all the nights were originally kind of
[SPEAKER_01]: They're basically identical.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they were designed as take all commerce.
[SPEAKER_02]: But they're not because after a few battles, the nights look like fast and the furious cars because they have to add more pieces to it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, but not like that, but even before the battles, they have to be customized because you land on a planet and depending on the climate, the terrain, the type of enemies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they would customize the nights up.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so when we talked about before, all the night pilots, their nobility ranked, you know, top to bottom, big night to small night, you know, either, you know, the big night is the king and the king's thirty second, you know, removed and nephew is riding an armature, probably aggressively, you know, probably way too far away and way too fast.
[SPEAKER_01]: The next tier down is this subclass of nobility who became the masters of working on the nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: And to Brad's point, they would, you know, upgrade the armor to add a man to him, because always add a man to him in sci-fi, apparently every ship had a bunch of add a man to him on it along with the STC.
[SPEAKER_02]: The funny thing is it's supposed to be this rare element, but everyone has just stockpiles of it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's also, like, apparently they can make it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't
[SPEAKER_01]: They never go into it, which is actually a good call because they've gone into it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I could just, I'd crap all over it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm kidding.
[SPEAKER_01]: So these people would then also upgrade the armaments.
[SPEAKER_01]: They would use the STCs and they would actually change weapon retooling, better chain source because the forestry's denser.
[SPEAKER_01]: More focused cannons for blasting through harder rocks.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why do we count?
[SPEAKER_01]: volcano cannon, concept awesome, table top, and man without thing misses.
[SPEAKER_01]: It just hurts inside.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's worse than the railgun.
[SPEAKER_01]: They would also make like wider Ray cannons though for the Lord's of enemies.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, this is great.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think Stubbers shoved all over all of these nights because they just had horns to deal with.
[SPEAKER_02]: You think that if these guys would have went to the Ad Mac, they would have been in charge because in the night society, they just don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: They get there.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're jumping.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's true.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Originally.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, cause that's really interesting point.
[SPEAKER_01]: Initially, these artificers never gained any real prominence in society.
[SPEAKER_01]: They were critical for the nobility without them.
[SPEAKER_01]: There were there are no nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: And all, but they seemed, they took a very distant back seat to the rest of it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Wildly missed it.
[SPEAKER_01]: My theory on that though is I think that they viewed it as a self-serving task because if they kept the night more powerful, they were safer.
[SPEAKER_01]: So they mean greater than that.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, this is your at night world.
[SPEAKER_02]: If your nights are better, you will probably... Yeah, safer.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I would also admit that probably the works of Pete Seagur and Wooden would have got three, weren't being listened to with this era.
[SPEAKER_01]: And if you don't know what I'm talking about, sell down her attack.
[SPEAKER_01]: All the overtime, these artificers did pick up a second role, which is kind of cool, artist.
[SPEAKER_01]: They began decorating the nights with symbols and logos, just like any feudal house.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a fantasy and real.
[SPEAKER_01]: They did have batteries.
[SPEAKER_02]: I want to go into Forty K though.
[SPEAKER_02]: Some of the most beautiful free hand is on some of the larger nights in Forty K. Because we have the space to do it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, just saying a lot of the best painters in the game.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, we'll move.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's what we'll paint.
[SPEAKER_02]: Throw crops out to know, but don't, Josh Ford, just people that just do wildly beautiful artwork.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, it looks insane.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's some nights out there that you're just, you look at, you know, please not put on the table top.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, I don't want to be in, I don't want to be in the presence of that night moving around.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I want it behind the display, the display.
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't look at anywhere near.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm worried.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm worried.
[SPEAKER_01]: One of my dice will hit.
[SPEAKER_01]: That being said, the Knights themselves, as they took on the roles of nobles, also changed a lot.
[SPEAKER_01]: They became less warrior and more diplomat.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because as a noble of a society, you have to handle all the manners of state, allocation of resources, setting up settling local disputes, arranging marriages to strengthen and weaken other houses, and all the Machiavellian stuff also has to come into play here.
[SPEAKER_01]: And what's kind of cool in the stories is that these just aren't these weren't the passions of these nobles because at their core, their psyche's been changed.
[SPEAKER_01]: The right of becoming has made them, they just want to be warrior kings.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they can't.
[SPEAKER_01]: They have to go do BS all day.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so one of the things that they talk about a lot in the books is
[SPEAKER_01]: These nobles are at their happiest when they're piloting a night joyous when they're at this where they want to be and so because all the weights and all the weight of the decisions and the state disappear they operate their war machine and do what they do best.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's come up more on our next cast, but you know, sometimes a noble just hops in the night and leaves becoming a night of legend.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we're going to deal with that on our next cast a bit a bit more, but just calling it out now.
[SPEAKER_01]: One flip side of this though, there is an issue the night Lords have, and this is rival factions.
[SPEAKER_01]: So over thousands of years of darkness, the nobility classes grew and grew.
[SPEAKER_01]: And, you know, the first night pilots were not necessarily all related to each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: So when I started having kids and making no bit noble families at the quarters, only going to be one king.
[SPEAKER_01]: So you've got numerous families that all compile at nights.
[SPEAKER_01]: How does this get settled?
[SPEAKER_01]: always the word competition comes up somewhere more positive than others.
[SPEAKER_01]: So sometimes they would just hold big actual literal competitions among the night warriors.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, they kept coming up with different, well, competitions.
[SPEAKER_02]: And what's even the same competition?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, well, because any world was different, but some of the big, like, hey, we're going to go on a grand hunt, whoever can kill the most like Xenos wins, or there'd be like a game, it's like, you know, like the, it's almost jousting basically now.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I don't like game jokes.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like game jokes.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't like it, but that's a mistake you'd injure the night.
[SPEAKER_01]: I want it the more with the Scottish Highland games where it's like chasing stuff.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just who can, whose night can you can run the fastest, whose night can throw the heaviest tree over its head?
[SPEAKER_01]: It to me is more at more entertaining.
[SPEAKER_01]: And what they would do is this is more at the way the functional worlds, whoever won the competition would then take the mantle of King for a set period of time until the next set of games came around.
[SPEAKER_01]: This, for the most part, by the way, was on the up and up.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's not, there are some rumors now that somebody had some cheating at playing a few of them, but for the most part, it was pretty even.
[SPEAKER_01]: But not on all worlds.
[SPEAKER_01]: At some world, the rival factions couldn't come to terms with each other.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they just kill each other.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then, yeah, best case scenario is just subterfuge, but off more for the not pure war.
[SPEAKER_01]: a lot of these worlds didn't survive.
[SPEAKER_01]: Luckily, though, for the ones that did survive, Slanesh was born.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I say, luckily, because when Slanesh was born, World Travel was born.
[SPEAKER_01]: World Travel comes back on the table, came to the first time in about five thousand years.
[SPEAKER_01]: Or more, depending on where you were, and the Azure Activision.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: The ad mech, and as soon to be dawned in pairing of man, are about to break into the stars.
[SPEAKER_01]: The crusade.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think we're going to break there because next week we're going to pick up the nighthouses from that point about the discovery by the Imperium being brought back into the fold and a lot of that changes to their structure and that kind of that came as a side effect of that.
[SPEAKER_02]: and the alignment with the mechanic and well, depending on what house, because some are allied pretty close and some are not.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, what's it?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, some just aren't allied with the mechanic.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, but until next week, this has been John Barsodium, Brad Chester.
[SPEAKER_02]: This guy.
