TGI - Episode 217 “On The Air”

Pod Meets World

While Mr. Feeny pulls the plug on Cory and Shawn's pirate radio show in 1995…Will, Danielle and Rider use their present day podcast to guess which cast member is sick. They also wonder why they don’t remember anything about Robin Leach and if this episode is a “good romp,” or a “bad romp.” Also, which music festival would Feeny feel most comfortable at?

And it wouldn’t be a Pod Meets World episode if they didn’t talk about feeling old!

00:00:27
Speaker 4: Then we're going to Disneyland.

00:00:49
Speaker 3: There's this great writer if you're writes for The Atlantic names Jennifer To put out this article a couple of weeks ago that I've been thinking about so much, and I wanted to ask you guys. It's about the difference between how old you are and how old you feel. And she, you know, cites a few studies about how mostly people feel twenty percent younger than they are once they're over the age of like thirty five, but that before that people either feel older than they are. Did I say that right? I said, if you're over thirty five, you feel younger than you actually are?

00:01:23
Speaker 1: Yeah, four thirty five you feel older than you are?

00:01:25
Speaker 2: Yes?

00:01:26
Speaker 3: Or you want to be older than you actually are? Are you trying to be?

00:01:28
Speaker 1: Yeah?

00:01:29
Speaker 3: And I've always had this weird issue where I always felt like an old man, like from when I was a kid. Where do you guys land on this issue?

00:01:38
Speaker 5: I have wanted to be an old woman from the time I was little. I thought being old was exactly was exactly what I wanted. I just want to be old.

00:01:46
Speaker 3: But how old do you feel now? Do you feel good?

00:01:49
Speaker 1: Question?

00:01:50
Speaker 5: I don't really know if you ask me how old I feel like physically in my body, I feel probably right about my age. I have more aches and pains now than I did before, not a ton.

00:02:01
Speaker 1: I'm not like you know, but like I Will.

00:02:03
Speaker 5: Will and I sat in the same seats on the long flight home that we had recently. We sat next to each other and I was talking to Will. We said we weren't going to talk, but we talked the whole time we talked, and he sat next.

00:02:15
Speaker 1: To each other and I was so I was.

00:02:16
Speaker 5: I sat at the window and he sat in the aisle, and so my neck has a kink from just looking at Will on the plane. For however many hours I was looking that direction, I kept going, oh, my neck hurts.

00:02:25
Speaker 1: So you know, that's a that seems like.

00:02:27
Speaker 5: A forty one, almost forty two year old thing to have that I wouldn't have had as a kid.

00:02:31
Speaker 1: I have some low back aches, you know.

00:02:33
Speaker 5: But like as far as youthful orn mentally, well, again, I feel like I forget more stuff now. But I also feel like some of that is having children that are still young and my mom brain, where so much of my brain power goes toward taking care of small children and thinking ahead for them and their schedules and their plans. Maybe I'll get some of the maybe I'll get some of that back. So I don't know, but I I do also surprise myself that I'm going to be forty two. I'm like, that can't be. I'm not I'm not going to be forty two. I have to be thirty two or something.

00:03:10
Speaker 1: So, well, what about you.

00:03:14
Speaker 2: I always wanted to be older when I was younger, and I'm like the same, you know, I just did. I was always attracted to older women. I always dated older women. I just wanted to be older.

00:03:25
Speaker 4: Than I was.

00:03:26
Speaker 2: Also, we grow up very fast in the business we were in, So by ten years old, I was smoking cigarettes, I was going down in New York City by myself. I was just I was older for my age. But it's funny as I'm getting older and I'm the oldest of the crew. I'm going to be forty seven this year, I have the same feelings as you, Danielle, where I'm like, that.

00:03:44
Speaker 3: Can't be right.

00:03:45
Speaker 4: I can't be forty because in my head I'm thirty five.

00:03:49
Speaker 2: Yeah if that frankly, I mean, I'm like in my late twenties.

00:03:53
Speaker 4: And it's funny because as.

00:03:54
Speaker 2: Our parents' age, I think to myself, where God willing I get to my parents' age. The thing that's so interesting as you're living that chapter of your life is your body is shutting down in a lot of ways, and your mind is still. You might still feel like you're twenty twenty five if you're lucky. So it's like there's a disconnect between the body and the mind. And what you were talking about, writer, there's a quote that I have on my refrigerator. I have all these different quote magnets, and one of them I look at every day and I think it's from Satchel page was how old would you be if you didn't know how old you are?

00:04:27
Speaker 3: Right?

00:04:27
Speaker 2: So it's like if you've never Yeah, if you never knew how old you were and somebody asked you, what would your answer be? Yeah, So it's yeah, it's that same kind of kind of thing.

00:04:36
Speaker 4: What about you writers? Are you where you are in your mind?

00:04:40
Speaker 3: Or yeah? I actually think I'm pretty pretty pretty because I've always wanted to be older, but I do think that as I get older, I want to make an effort to be younger because I yeah, I feel like I feel like when I was growing up, I always wanted to be older, you know, act more mature, and now I want to act more more immature. So I want to be less mature because like, you know, for instance, when I talk to my college students, I'm like, their way their brains work, just like it's so they're so open, you know, and they're so there's still like absorbing new ideas and you know, watching movies and reading scripts and being like what that can change the way I think about movies, And I'm like I always want to be that way, you know, because that happened naturally. But now as I get older, it gets harder and harder. You know, you start becoming like an old man where you're just like, no, I'm let me tell you what good movies are, what a good book is, and I just don't want to be that. So now I want to make an effort to try and be younger.

00:05:37
Speaker 2: Actually, well, that's what I always say. I've always said, I live by this. There's a very big difference between childish and childlike, and so childlike is a wonderful, wonderful thing. Last night, I you know, we've been traveling this whole weekend. We're around people all weekend. I love being at the cons dungeon and dragons talking all that kind of stuff, and I wanted to relax last night, so I put on the new Batman animated movie and I got to watch a nice animated film and I hate some popcorn, and it was like, I love that stuff that, to me is is just so enjoyable. And video games in which I don't play a whole lot of, but you know, tabletop and stuff like that, it's it's fun, it's enjoyable. It's you know, hanging out with Indy at Disneyland, that day, right.

00:06:17
Speaker 3: When you're with a kid, it's so yeah, it happens. It just happens because you know, it's something my dad always said. You know, he was encouraging me to have kids all throughout my life, but he just always said, you get to live for your childhood over again. You get to have a second childhood. Yeah, and it's so true. And you know, and what I have to remind myself as a parent is to just allow myself to do that, because you so easily get caught up and like did you brush your teeth? Did you do this? Did we we got to get to school on time, or take this class? And what I realized is that what Indy really wants and what I actually benefit the most from is like just playing together and just being like as as much of an eight year old in my brain as I can. And it's so beneficial for him, it's so beneficial for me, and we just have so much fun. But it takes a lot to the sort of like flip that switch and not being we should be doing something constructive or productive, you know, and so it'd be like, no, we're just gonna you know.

00:07:10
Speaker 4: Say Adler with Adler that.

00:07:14
Speaker 5: Was a ton of fun, I know, and I we were actually just talking about the fact writer that one of the ways I want to stay that I want to stay young, and that kids help you is by staying active and staying physical too, because will we also talked about this. As you age, it becomes easier and easier to just sit on the couch more. And I really think that as far as staying young and staying healthy is staying physically active. And it doesn't mean you need to be weightlifting five times a week or doing you know, running a marathon, which is great if you can, but even just going outside and walking and and and my kids are keeping me young in that way that I am constantly running after them and anyway, Yeah.

00:07:52
Speaker 2: Dogs will do that too. Get a dog, take a dog for a walk, take dogs in the park. It's like, yeah, it's great stuff.

00:07:57
Speaker 1: Absolutely love it.

00:07:58
Speaker 5: Well, let's uh jump into our recap today.

00:08:02
Speaker 1: Welcome to Pod meets World. I'm Danielle Fischel, I'm.

00:08:05
Speaker 4: Rather strong, and I'm Wilfredell.

00:08:07
Speaker 5: So let's jump into our recap. This is season two, episode seventeen on the air. It originally aired February tenth, nineteen ninety five. The synopsis is that mister Feene makes the decision to pull the plug on Corey and Shawn's radio program at school when their format takes an inappropriate turn. Eric enters the publisher's clearing how Sweepstakes.

00:08:31
Speaker 1: It was directed by David Traynor.

00:08:33
Speaker 5: It was written by Mark Bluman and Howard Buskang, and it guest starred Jonathan C.

00:08:37
Speaker 1: Kaplan as Alvin Nice Back.

00:08:40
Speaker 3: He's back again, aln Is this the last time?

00:08:43
Speaker 1: Or does he keep this is the last time?

00:08:45
Speaker 3: This is insane that we didn't have more memories of I mean, I know it was like season two, one of our most recurring guest story.

00:08:51
Speaker 4: What do I did?

00:08:51
Speaker 2: So?

00:08:52
Speaker 4: Is this three? Four?

00:08:53
Speaker 1: This is as three? Yeah? I think this is four. I think this is for yeah, four episodes.

00:08:56
Speaker 4: Yeah, it's half as many as Danny did, right, yeah?

00:09:01
Speaker 3: Crazy?

00:09:02
Speaker 4: Yeah.

00:09:02
Speaker 5: And then writer's good friend Hillary Tuck appears as Sarah she will return later in our Disney World episode, and Justin Thompson as Ludwig. So I thought maybe you guys would think this was as interesting as I do. He was also in an episode of Quantum Leap in nineteen ninety two where he played Donald Trump.

00:09:26
Speaker 4: Really I remember that episode.

00:09:29
Speaker 3: But there's a Quantum Leap episode where somebody.

00:09:32
Speaker 1: Ninety two where somebody was Donald Trump.

00:09:34
Speaker 2: I remember that of such a good show, funny show, such a I did too.

00:09:40
Speaker 3: That's weird. That's like one of the few television shows I really loved as a kid.

00:09:44
Speaker 1: Right, Quantum Leap rewatch here?

00:09:46
Speaker 4: I would love it? Are you kidding? I would love it? I would love it. What I did not love was this episode. I'm totally honest with you.

00:09:53
Speaker 3: I thought you might like it. I didn't like it either, but it was just kind of a romp, so I figured, like.

00:09:58
Speaker 2: But to be a good row, it's a romp that made no sense, made no sense.

00:10:03
Speaker 4: This story made no sense.

00:10:05
Speaker 2: There's a lot of Daz story with the I totally forgot that Robin Leech was on this episode.

00:10:10
Speaker 3: I wondered, I was like Rob Lee on this side.

00:10:14
Speaker 2: I remember, had none of this and we'll get into all this, but there's stuff that's happening.

00:10:18
Speaker 3: I was going to be the only detractor because because this episode does kind of loom large just because of the whole like that, because that was just like in my mind, we had fun, like I think we had making this a fun episode.

00:10:32
Speaker 5: It's not like there's a lot going on and you guys don't it's not like, you know, yeah, I can see how it's not your favorite, but it's also just kind of a fun episode.

00:10:41
Speaker 3: It's I don't know, I thought it was just kind of dumb, dumb it was. It was just felt dumb to me. I feel like, you know, and I know dumb Sean is funny, but it's also like dumb Sean drives things, dumb Eric drives. It just felt like and then it just kind of felt like easy journ.

00:10:54
Speaker 2: There was also dumb Cory in this one. It was just kind of like everybody was dumb.

00:10:59
Speaker 4: It was just weird.

00:11:01
Speaker 3: It was a nice return of Phoenie likes driving, which great and I saw that was cool to see.

00:11:08
Speaker 5: But well, I think also, you know, we talked about this before where you talk about the steaks in a kid's show, when you can't really up the stakes too much because you're then promoting stuff that families don't want kids doing. So I think this suffers a little bit from what the stakes could be. But I think if you think about the idea of doing a kid romp fun episode about free speech and what that means and what and what free speech, but you also have responsibilities, like if you think about it from that standpoint, like I like the I like the message of the episode, and I think it was a fun way to get there.

00:11:45
Speaker 3: Yeah, I know, you do something where you're talking. The fact that we're just doing it to meet girls is just don't it's just like it.

00:11:52
Speaker 5: It was just little things for me though, like well, okay, I'm not even done talking about who's in this episode. Glory Fortier as Jasmine. She was Agatha in The Walking Dead. Still working, Oh, Grant Guilt as Spencer, another Sandlot actor.

00:12:08
Speaker 1: He played Bertram Grover weeks.

00:12:11
Speaker 4: Okay five times fast.

00:12:14
Speaker 1: Robin Leach as Robin Leach to.

00:12:18
Speaker 3: Either I believe we did that and I don't remember it.

00:12:21
Speaker 2: And for all the younger people out there that are Podmeats World fans and Boy Meets World fans. Robin Leach was on a very popular show at the time, corn Live Styles of the Rich and Famous, and he'd always yell, here we are, Champagne dreams and Cavy all wishes and it was.

00:12:36
Speaker 1: It's really good.

00:12:37
Speaker 4: And it was like that.

00:12:38
Speaker 3: Indy watched this one with me and just did not did not get the storyline at all. He still laughed at you will, he still thought you were phony, but did not like there was no understanding of what these Matt He's like he got every magazine. He's like okay, and I'm like, because they used to.

00:12:53
Speaker 5: Never mind that that, I don't remember what that connection was with.

00:12:58
Speaker 2: The you had to buy Like they say, you didn't have to buy the stuff to win this the publisher's clearing house and it would always say like you might have won ten thousand.

00:13:05
Speaker 4: You know, and they'd come to your house with the Robin Leach.

00:13:09
Speaker 3: He didn't do that now, of course, not somebody else, famous person mc McMahon.

00:13:15
Speaker 4: Was publisher's clearing house. Yes, yeah, it's a little they.

00:13:18
Speaker 3: Could not they couldn't get ed McMahon. So they yeah, you know that they wrote this one way and then they were like who else can.

00:13:23
Speaker 2: We get possibly, And yeah, it was just kind of like, let's get it, let's get actually.

00:13:27
Speaker 5: Okay, Right, So we start the episode in the radio studio. Mister Feoeney is launching the John Adams High radio station after a ten year absence. He accidentally triggers a pig sound effect instead of the horns blowing. Alvin Meesi is his co host on a morning Zoo show, but poene is hogging the mic from Alvin, but he does have a funny joke nobody likes a hike cog and then Phoeney decides to play his first song, Michael Bolton. I love Michael Bolton.

00:13:56
Speaker 3: It's interesting that Michael Bolton is like what we're making fun of because popular still.

00:14:01
Speaker 1: Yes, and it was huge cool and he's so good.

00:14:04
Speaker 4: He's the bolt come on, yeah.

00:14:06
Speaker 3: But I feel like he was really at a peak in like ninety to ninety two, so at this point. And I guess the other thing is he was very like adult contemporary, So for teenagers, Michael Bolton would have been cheesy. I loved him even back then.

00:14:24
Speaker 4: Exactly what they wanted.

00:14:26
Speaker 2: The funnier were It would have been Kenny g That's exactly what they were looking for, but that for kids would have been even worse.

00:14:34
Speaker 3: Sing They said, Harry Como next, right.

00:14:37
Speaker 2: Right, which well, that's one of the things we need to talk about because in.

00:14:40
Speaker 4: Thirty seconds he plays three songs.

00:14:43
Speaker 3: Yes, oh yeah, and.

00:14:44
Speaker 4: You never know songs.

00:14:45
Speaker 2: It's like what what, Yeah, it's how did you play all three songs in thirty.

00:14:49
Speaker 5: Seconds, right, Yeah, what was the point of that? But we cut to the school cafeteria. Sean is trying to clip the wires to the speaker so they don't have to hear the song. Sean is wearing an incredible album. I think he's actually, yeah, so beautiful. It is a heazard cream shirt with an awesome Paisley button down and then like quilted vest and it's a cool look.

00:15:17
Speaker 3: Man. Look yeah this is it kind of fits me better. Yeah, it's like all the all the Sean ideas coalesced.

00:15:24
Speaker 5: Have come together exactly. It really, I was really like, nah, chef's kiss there.

00:15:38
Speaker 4: I am.

00:15:39
Speaker 2: I'm going to just start by saying something that I very but I don't think we've ever really done on the show, and I think this is the first time I'm going to do it. But I'm going to have a criticism of Ben's performance.

00:15:49
Speaker 4: Interesting this entire episode, he seemed really mellow.

00:15:55
Speaker 3: Well I know what I was he sick.

00:15:58
Speaker 2: You can tell you that I thought he was sick or something because he knows.

00:16:04
Speaker 3: An episode about your voice and I could hear the second he started talking.

00:16:07
Speaker 2: Okay, so I wrote, is he's sick, because he's like, it's so clear a cold subdued this entire episode.

00:16:15
Speaker 3: He could have been medicine man. You could hear it in his voice the second he started talking. That's what I wrote down. I was like, oh my god, that's the whole episode about using your voice and he's sick. It's such a bummer.

00:16:25
Speaker 2: Yes, the entire you could tell he's off. He's just off. He's off. He doesn't have the energy.

00:16:30
Speaker 5: It's such a shame that we worked together so closely for all those years and we just don't know each other at all. You know that all three of us have written in our notes Ben has a cold.

00:16:41
Speaker 4: Ben's got a cold. We knew it right away. Yeah, yeah, figured, but I didn't know.

00:16:46
Speaker 1: But there you go.

00:16:47
Speaker 3: Off.

00:16:47
Speaker 4: Ye.

00:16:48
Speaker 5: So mister Turner hands Shawan a plastic knife. The boys accept it, and then they do their gasp when they realized it was Turner. He tells them to get down. Feene then follows up the smooth Sounds of Bolton with Perry Cuomo, which is great. That is what they should have gone with first, because I think my I think they were trying to go for this is your parents' music. And right, that is what Perry Como feels like.

00:17:09
Speaker 3: But it also should have been like nineteen thirties. It should have gone like so old, like more fish, you know that correct? Funny?

00:17:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it's less bound in his band of renown stuff like that.

00:17:20
Speaker 4: Exactly. Both of you looking at me like I'm crazy exactly. Maybe that's the.

00:17:23
Speaker 3: Problem is that then they would have been too obscure, so they wanted it to be a.

00:17:28
Speaker 2: Because he also he also says Menudo, which is which is weird.

00:17:31
Speaker 3: I don't get that. Yeah, but like.

00:17:32
Speaker 2: Ernudo's a boy band from from eighties.

00:17:35
Speaker 1: I was thinking it was still early nineties. Okay, yeah, okay.

00:17:38
Speaker 5: So mister Turner says, if Corey and Sean don't like what they hear, they should get on the radio station themselves. Sean doesn't like this idea, but Corey starts to like the idea of being on the radio, so he convinces Sean to do it. I did think it was kind of stupid funny that you guys both get into the idea of what you have, like pressing the button.

00:17:56
Speaker 1: We're just like, yeah, you.

00:17:58
Speaker 4: Could tell you guys were playing at that that was like.

00:18:02
Speaker 5: Playing and having fun and I like that even if it's not a joke that like gets a big, huge guffa laugh.

00:18:09
Speaker 1: It's just that's just fun to me.

00:18:10
Speaker 4: You're just riffing. Yep.

00:18:12
Speaker 1: Uh so I like that.

00:18:13
Speaker 5: Corey says he has a radio voice, and Sean says he has a radio face.

00:18:19
Speaker 1: If they're serious, shirt of just my face.

00:18:22
Speaker 5: It says that face for radio, if they're serious. Turner says he will talk to Feenie later. Mister Feenie then starts playing Mnudo through the speakers, and Turner concedes that he will talk to him now.

00:18:36
Speaker 4: In thirty seconds.

00:18:37
Speaker 1: That's right. And then we're in the Matthew's kitchen.

00:18:40
Speaker 5: Corey come comes downstairs, giving the weather report to his family. He's on his way to his first day on the radio. Eric asks if he's taking requests and then tells Corey to swallow.

00:18:49
Speaker 1: His head and leave.

00:18:53
Speaker 5: Isn't to swallow your head a little bit of like a from a mister Feenie era insult, swallow your head?

00:19:00
Speaker 2: It's like, yeah on this, yeah, exactly right, exactly exactly.

00:19:05
Speaker 4: You're not George like that kind of stuff.

00:19:07
Speaker 2: I think George was cool back in the day, right, right, But that's.

00:19:10
Speaker 3: Like a classic. This is like the classic. I don't know. This is why this episode is not that interesting to me, because it's like insult. Okay, it's somewhat cleverly worded insult, but all Eric is doing is just insulting Core, and it's like, okay, can we do something more? Could Eric have something to say about Rio or music.

00:19:29
Speaker 4: Or so tacked on?

00:19:31
Speaker 2: This entire everything I was in there, it was just like it seemed like they wrote a script and they might, oh, wait, he's guaranteed to be here this week, We've got to write something.

00:19:39
Speaker 4: It just seems, you.

00:19:40
Speaker 3: Know what, It felt color by numbers in a lot of ways I see it. It was just like the obligatory and sometimes that worked, like you know, the line that we've always talked about maybe you know, maybe he doesn't see us. It's so funny. It's like they could be once you have that situation, it can be any line, but that's a good one. But I feel like throughout this episode there's a lot of zingers or like they just fall flat.

00:20:02
Speaker 5: I'm not like, oka, yeah, I get the idea, but yeah, well it's another one of those situations too, where it's like Ben comes down and says like, oh, radio, I'm going to the radio. And then they were like, how do we get him out of here? And it's like, he really isn't needed in the scene. This is supposed to be the setup for the best story, so get him out of there, or don't even have him in it.

00:20:23
Speaker 3: But part of the problem is part of the problem is we're following Danger Boy, which was an episode that I think while it had its surreal and absurdist, you know, roller coaster moments, literally, it also just had that that grounding stuff between Ben and Feenie that was so smart, yeah, and it was so character based and grounded and relatable, and I just this didn't have any of that. So it felt like we just you know, and yeah, it just felt like we're kind of like ping ponging between shows, you know, different different tones.

00:20:54
Speaker 2: And I think that I think that coupled with Ben obviously giving a much more mellow performance because he didn't feel well, and all just compounded into kind of a episode for me all the way around.

00:21:06
Speaker 5: Well, Corey takes off for school, saying Eric just doesn't want him around. When he weasels mom and dad for money, Eric sits down at the kitchen, and Alan asks Eric to give it his best weasel, which I took it could mean one of two things. Either give me your best weasel, as in go ahead and give me your best weaseling me for money, but also you nickname Morgan. And she's then the first one who speaks. I know he hasn't called her that, and so then I was like, maybe, yeah, I'm not sure what that joke is.

00:21:37
Speaker 4: Yep.

00:21:38
Speaker 5: But so Morgan calls out Eric for blowing his money on babes, and Eric says his allowance has not kept pace with inflation and that Alan has no idea what it costs to take out a pretty girl. And then, after a death glare from Amy, Eric decides to try that again. But then Morgan hands Eric a letter from Robin Leach and the National Family publisher says he's the winner of ten million. Eric believes it, and his family obviously tries to tell him that's not realistic. Alan plays along and says he can finally get the brain surgery he needs.

00:22:08
Speaker 1: He asks Amy if she knows what jokes.

00:22:11
Speaker 2: It's so basic, it was like it was written by somebody. It's just so different.

00:22:15
Speaker 4: This way.

00:22:16
Speaker 5: We also have jumped immediately into Eric being dumb as a box of rocks.

00:22:22
Speaker 4: All of a sudden, he's just he's really stupid.

00:22:24
Speaker 2: Also, does he work because Alan eventually says, come to the grocery stores play so does is he not.

00:22:30
Speaker 3: Working there anymore?

00:22:32
Speaker 1: He's not working there anymore?

00:22:33
Speaker 5: You say, no, no thanks, I'm gonna get rich this way, and so I think you're not working there anymore. But they also were acting as if you've never worked there, yeah.

00:22:42
Speaker 4: Which is It's just it's it was very confusing.

00:22:44
Speaker 2: The whole thing was very weird, and he is he's totally dumb now, and it was it was just kind of they're going into that instant.

00:22:51
Speaker 4: I don't know, it was very it's the whole thing was just very odd.

00:22:53
Speaker 3: It feels like I'm married with children scene or something. You know, it's sort of like by.

00:22:59
Speaker 2: Like, yeah, it was very by the numbers, very by the numbers, and the numbers weren't all that great, so it was just kind.

00:23:04
Speaker 4: Of like.

00:23:07
Speaker 5: He asks Amy if she knows what's inside his head, and her response is life is like a box of chocolates.

00:23:12
Speaker 3: And Eric said, yeah, and did you guys know at Will's did you hear just our writers laughing, Yeah, of course, like one of our It's like the audience wasn't as with it, but you could. I could hear like the chorus of dudes laughing, which the dude so familiar, right, And I know what happened. I know that Will. You probably had done it differently every time, and so they lost it because that was the first time you had done it that specific way, and they laughed harder than the audience. And but it's kept the audio of.

00:23:41
Speaker 4: Our five Forrest Gump preference.

00:23:45
Speaker 2: Also, it's very like yeah, yeah.

00:23:49
Speaker 5: Well, Amy tells Eric to go wait by the front door for Robin Leech, and then we are back in the radio studio. Corey and Shawn are starting their first radio show. Sean is wearing the Atlas Heart shirt again.

00:24:00
Speaker 3: M hmmm, you're.

00:24:02
Speaker 1: Is this now two episodes in a row? See it in Danger Boy?

00:24:06
Speaker 3: No, I think it was one before. Yeah, okay, but it's definitely becoming my my go to one of my.

00:24:11
Speaker 1: Already your go to.

00:24:13
Speaker 5: So they are interviewing Sarah from the student Council to discuss the cancelation of the ninth grade spring dance. Sarah says, there's no story here. They just ran out of money and they're going to have a bake sale to save the dance Corey.

00:24:25
Speaker 2: And they never, by the way, never once talking to the microphone. Not a single time are either of them actually addressing the microphone at all.

00:24:34
Speaker 5: You don't really need to hold the whole You don't need to talk into a microphone.

00:24:37
Speaker 4: No, this is this sounds sorry.

00:24:39
Speaker 3: I'm sorry you guys.

00:24:42
Speaker 5: You guys, you don't need to talk to the You don't need to when you're sitting totally fine.

00:24:45
Speaker 1: Everybody is a great episode of pod. Do you guys like this show?

00:24:52
Speaker 4: Everybody having fun? Everybody the entire episode. I'm just going talking to.

00:24:56
Speaker 3: Them, Okay, hold on, I wasn't going to bring this up yet because it actually did ocur to me until the dancing at the end. What school radio show goes over the PA throughout the entire school?

00:25:08
Speaker 2: Like?

00:25:09
Speaker 3: What is that?

00:25:10
Speaker 4: Who are they trying? You get?

00:25:15
Speaker 2: Who's gonna call in?

00:25:17
Speaker 3: It was constantly playing music over all the pas during class. But what is happening when you have a radio station that that people can tune into, right, you don't actually just play it over the whole loudspeaker in the cafeteria.

00:25:31
Speaker 5: No, you we only did that for the morning announcements. The morning announcement we had.

00:25:37
Speaker 3: But this is a radio show where people can call in. That is just broadcasting throughout the entire school constantly. Yes, that would be so annoying.

00:25:45
Speaker 4: Is gonna call?

00:25:45
Speaker 2: I'm sitting there and yelling at my screen the whole time, going, who are you trying to get to call in?

00:25:50
Speaker 1: There's no call in?

00:25:52
Speaker 3: Who's calling in the middle of the school day.

00:25:55
Speaker 4: It's like, what the hell is happening?

00:25:57
Speaker 3: It made no sense.

00:25:58
Speaker 4: It made no sense.

00:25:59
Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no logic to this entire.

00:26:02
Speaker 4: It does none none.

00:26:04
Speaker 3: It's that's where to get past.

00:26:07
Speaker 4: Yeah, it was so bizarre.

00:26:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, Well, Corey pushes Sarah for more of a story, to see what she's hiding. It's very boring, and then there's some feedback this show is bad. Corey asks what is the profit margin on a cupcake? And everyone in the cafeteria listening groans. Corey asks Sean for help, but he gets none. Corey begs people to call in, and when no one does, Sean wants to go home. Corey tries to grill Sarah, but she says, I don't know, man, I'm just a kid.

00:26:37
Speaker 3: I love that line.

00:26:40
Speaker 5: Sarah says, no one else wanted to do Corey's radio show, and then Sean notices that they have their first caller. They pick up the phone and it's someone speaking German. Corey informs him that the German hour is the next hour.

00:26:53
Speaker 1: They hang up.

00:26:54
Speaker 2: Sarah then every hour in this high school books for a radio show.

00:27:00
Speaker 3: Over all the pas.

00:27:02
Speaker 4: The hell is happening right now? Is my question. I don't get it.

00:27:06
Speaker 3: There's no reality, none, It's like none, It's so weird.

00:27:11
Speaker 5: Sarah then tries to leave, but Corey picks up a call from Spencer. Spencer asks Sarah if she's still going out with Joey Deruza. Corey tries to go back to the bake sale, but Sean knows they're onto something. Sarah says they broke up last week. Sean convinces Spencer to ask Sarah out. She says yes, and they head to meet by the Soda Machine.

00:27:29
Speaker 4: Now this I did.

00:27:32
Speaker 3: Like, and I think that there's a kernel of a really cool idea in this episode baked into this episode, which is that if you you know that, if you could, you can cater to an audience and get more ratings It's sort of like a commentary on what you do when you have a television show, which is if you go for like the sleazy easy thing, you you have a show that might be popular, but it's not good for the world. And I feel like this this episode could have gone that direction, but it didn't quite get there for me. Instead, it has this like free freedom of speech stuff, which is okay, but like I like the lesson that Corey and Sean should have, you know, they can do like a dating show or whatever.

00:28:13
Speaker 4: Become Howard Stern exactly. That would have been a great lot where it should have gone.

00:28:17
Speaker 2: It's like it gets so sensational and so crazy that it then ends up they have to do some kind of stunt in the school, somebody gets hurt.

00:28:26
Speaker 4: It goes nuts.

00:28:27
Speaker 2: As opposed to somebody just asked this girl out and then people started listening to it.

00:28:30
Speaker 4: It wasn't that big a deal.

00:28:32
Speaker 1: It is exactly what you guys just said should have happened, is exactly what happens.

00:28:37
Speaker 5: It starts off with a girl just being asked out, and then the next thing that happens is talking about hip waiters in a bikini top, and then the more escalation above that is that they have a rave in the school, which again ties into what I was talking about, which is you can only have elevated steaks for kids programming so much you couldn't do a crazy, wacky stunt where someone dies because you're a mill matters, or where someone even gets really hurt. The problem with these kinds of stakes in a kid's show is that you can only go so far, and so they did. I actually that's exactly what my point was at the beginning of the episode, where I kind I like that idea that there's this idea of free speech, but you get wrapped up in the ratings and the success of it, but you should have a responsibility with the speech that you are with your free speech.

00:29:27
Speaker 3: So I like that idea. I don't feel illustrates that well, I feel like it it ends up being more I don't know, it just doesn't feel like that that message isn't resonated throughout the actual action. For me, it felt it felt more about like the high jinks of you know, hiding in the closet or running around here or turn or flipping on the switch when we didn't and it just didn't feel like that conversation landed for me. I don't know.

00:29:51
Speaker 4: I agree. I agree this whole thing I thought I found.

00:29:54
Speaker 2: I felt like, I just what you're saying, Danielle, I see what they were going for.

00:29:58
Speaker 4: Yeah, it just never got for me. Yeah, and then they got.

00:30:02
Speaker 1: There for me. I got it. I got it. I feel like I feel like Will was a little wasted.

00:30:07
Speaker 5: You're funnier than this, and the BT story is a little like, let's keep better on. Yeah, but I think knowing the constraints of the raising of the stakes for the first storyline and it being just kind of fun, and the way Turner and Feenie are on just the right amount of opposing sides before then very much being on the same side. I thought all of that was really strong, you know, other than Ben being sick, which I could tell. I liked the I fought like Corey and Sean it was kind of fun. So I don't know they worked for me. I'll be the only one. I'll stand on an island alone.

00:30:42
Speaker 4: When when do you? When are you part of this show?

00:30:45
Speaker 3: All?

00:30:45
Speaker 1: I have no idea. I'm just I've never been on Boy Meets Worlds.

00:30:48
Speaker 2: I was going to say, I thought you're on way more episodes in this second season, like, way more episodes in this.

00:30:54
Speaker 4: Again, I sat there, like, guys, another one that she's not in. It was so strange.

00:30:58
Speaker 1: I think it must be season three.

00:31:00
Speaker 3: I remember that fact. It's funny because I always know that Danielle, that it was more retro retrospectively, retroactively that Tapanga became this like legendary essential part of our show. In the actual reality of first and second season, she just wasn't there. Thought I know.

00:31:18
Speaker 1: I mean, I remembered that too.

00:31:20
Speaker 5: I think what I'm what I'm realizing is how few I don't remember how many I do if it I end up doing eleven or thirteen this season. But what I think I'm thinking is how few thirteen feels yeah.

00:31:32
Speaker 1: Yeah, in the scheme of twenty two.

00:31:35
Speaker 5: But I think part of that is because sometimes I'm in the episode, but I'm there to say two things, you know, and then it's like, well, no, wonder that episode doesn't I don't really remember being there for that episode.

00:31:44
Speaker 3: They just land so heavy, like I mean in a good way, Like you know the fact that the Who's Afraid of Corey Wolf ended with the two of you kissing. The episode of the dance ended with the two of you dancing. It was like it, you know, so it feels like, oh, the tapanga storyline is the storyline, but the reality of you being there week to week, it's just then you're not there.

00:32:03
Speaker 2: Then all, yeah, it's very strange.

00:32:15
Speaker 5: So Corey tells Sean, no one is interested in this, But then we cut to the school cafeteria and everyone is cheering. Sean says, the flat phone lines are blowing up, and I really felt like we could have had.

00:32:26
Speaker 1: An insert shot of the phones blowing up.

00:32:28
Speaker 5: You pointed down to them, and we had already done another insert shot where like the one or two people were calling, and I really.

00:32:33
Speaker 1: Felt like I'd like to see all those nights.

00:32:35
Speaker 3: A conversation with David Traynor.

00:32:37
Speaker 1: Okay, time machine.

00:32:39
Speaker 4: Time machine, First we have to invent Okay, No, it's great.

00:32:41
Speaker 2: It's because because what you do is you obviously run to the bank of phones at your school, of course, to call into the local radio.

00:32:49
Speaker 1: Absolutely calling who's calling.

00:32:53
Speaker 4: Anyway?

00:32:54
Speaker 5: Gosh, Corey doesn't think this is an interesting idea, and he says it's just a bunch of lonely guys calling in. Corey says, this is the first idea ever. And then suddenly a line full of girls walk into the studio today to get on the radio and tack to the boys.

00:33:08
Speaker 3: She also looks like she's twenty four years Oh.

00:33:10
Speaker 4: Yeah, absolutely does.

00:33:12
Speaker 3: She looks like high schoolers do.

00:33:14
Speaker 5: Just look exactly. She's I think, supposed to be maybe even like a senior I.

00:33:17
Speaker 3: Know, but maybe it's just the way she's dressers. I don't know.

00:33:20
Speaker 5: I was like, well, yes, we have another woman in high high pantyhose.

00:33:23
Speaker 4: Yes, yeah, yeah, exactly right.

00:33:28
Speaker 3: It was a kitten on her shoes.

00:33:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, crazy, exactly.

00:33:32
Speaker 5: So Corey goes fully into it, and they start promoting Jasmine Fontana, who is single and she's on the show, and they are now calling the show Lunchtime Lust. A bunch of guys from the cafeteria run toward the studio when he says she likes to fish and nothing but hip waiters and bikini bottom and a bikini top.

00:33:51
Speaker 3: What is the what is this joke? It's repeated twice Jasmine when she says.

00:33:55
Speaker 1: Her name right, and then he goes, if it's not, it should be right.

00:33:59
Speaker 3: What don't understand think it.

00:34:01
Speaker 2: Kind of sounds like a porn star name is I think the joke they're going for.

00:34:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think, or like a stripper name, like if that's not her real name, it should.

00:34:09
Speaker 2: Be, like should be Jasmine Fontana. Yeah, you are like, that's the joke.

00:34:14
Speaker 3: You are just like, I don't get it.

00:34:17
Speaker 1: It's like that you say, if it's not, it should be.

00:34:19
Speaker 3: And the next one is then Ben said, or we say it again, we do it? Yes, And I was like, I don't understand this joke.

00:34:25
Speaker 4: Is this stripper porn name I think is what they're doing for.

00:34:29
Speaker 1: Yeah, the roxyar it all exactly. Yeah, Okay.

00:34:35
Speaker 5: Corey says callers are asking if she's a good kisser, and she says there's a way she can answer this question, and she goes in to kiss Corey. Corey closes his eyes and then boom, he opens them and it's mister Feene.

00:34:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a funny joke that you look at different, look different, you look different up close.

00:34:53
Speaker 4: I thought that is a funny, like.

00:34:55
Speaker 3: Closing your eyes, but it is.

00:34:59
Speaker 4: I agree, It's this is so pain by numbers this episode. Yeah, I agree.

00:35:05
Speaker 5: So Phoene is with a German kid, Ludwig, and tells him to take over for the newly popular Corey and Joan show.

00:35:12
Speaker 3: Yeh yeah, I love I love the poor German kid getting tied up. I love that whole storyline, like I'm on board. Yeah yeah.

00:35:22
Speaker 5: He plays only German music and he takes no request. And then we're in the school hallway. Mister Phoene kicks the boys out of the studio, but all the students in the halls are clapping, and he tells Corey.

00:35:35
Speaker 3: Always set is this I went the same hallway? I don't think it is because we're not coming out of the boys bathroom. It's like a whole new set, and you never see the actual hallway, like there's nothing behind us, like normally behind where if we were coming out of the boys bathroom, I think there would be that, like the upper level behind us, But it's not in.

00:35:54
Speaker 4: This, is it not?

00:35:56
Speaker 3: I just what Hallway said? Is this because it seems like it's its own?

00:36:02
Speaker 1: Is this the only time in the show you see it?

00:36:03
Speaker 3: Yeah?

00:36:04
Speaker 5: Oh okay, I don't remember seeing I don't remember even the set that this was on, Yes, I don't.

00:36:10
Speaker 1: And then we're in mister Feenie's classroom.

00:36:11
Speaker 5: He's teaching Principal Feenie's teaching his class.

00:36:15
Speaker 1: Mister Feenie is uh.

00:36:18
Speaker 5: Says they were going to be studying the Bill of Rights tomorrow and then says, oh, dear. Corey hears that from behind him and asks Feenie what the first Amendment is. Corey and Sean pretend to not remember, and they ask Phoenie in a playful manner. Feenie mumbles, freedom of speech. Corey asks if it applies to everybody, and Phoene says no. Mister Feenie says that what they said on their on the air was inappropriate and the rights of the Constitution were intended for those with responsibility. Sean says, if it doesn't apply to us, then why do we have to learn it? Everybody's question when you're in school as a kid, when am.

00:36:52
Speaker 4: I ever gonna need this? Lots of times? By the way, you don't.

00:36:57
Speaker 5: Just for the record, one hundred percent, but it never needed trig But you yeah, exactly.

00:37:02
Speaker 3: But the point of the point of most of your education is to learn how to learn.

00:37:06
Speaker 4: Sure, yes, I don't disagree.

00:37:08
Speaker 3: It's a worthwhile exercise, you know, to learn I agree, math and science, even if you're not going to use those.

00:37:14
Speaker 2: Like going to find you're also going to find the people that have the scientific or mathematic aptitude to then make that their career. That's also how you find like, wow, I speak in math. It's like, okay, that's I'm going to go into very well yeah, which I just never did.

00:37:29
Speaker 3: So this whole freedom of speech thing just does not make sense to me, Like, I just don't get what the First Amendment has to do with because to me, it's about the quality of the content. That's the point, right, It's not the like right to say any of this.

00:37:43
Speaker 4: He's not trying to silence them.

00:37:46
Speaker 3: He's not saying like you're not He's saying, don't do this crappy Like they had the right to have a show, and no one was shutting them down just for the sake of shutting it. Like it's it's just weird, Like and I don't know, I always feel this way about freedom of speech stuff. It's like, if you're using the First Amendment, the First Amendment is about the legal right to say something right, right, But that's not the same as like whether you should or should not, or whether you offend people or not, Like you should have consequences for the things you say.

00:38:13
Speaker 2: That's the thing you said the exact word. To me, freedom of speech is not speech without consequence. Those are two very different things.

00:38:19
Speaker 3: You completely, and yet it always gets caught up in this way, and I feel like this episode falls prey to the same argument. It's like, yeah, you have the right to stand up and be a Nazi or whatever, but that doesn't make you a good person or doesn't make it a good radio show right like right now.

00:38:32
Speaker 5: And if you work for a place that then wants to fire you, if you work for like a private you know, the right school, they have the right to fire you. Yes, yes, I agree with you. I agree with you in principle, but we're doing ABC TGIF.

00:38:48
Speaker 4: But there's a better version of this, I think is what we're saying, and I don't agree.

00:38:52
Speaker 3: So oversimplified, and I was just like, what does First Amendment have to do with like what they're actually because the point shouldn't be we have the right to say this is the point should be do better shows, you know.

00:39:03
Speaker 2: But that's where Phene turns around and the messages I'm not telling you you can't say, I'm you know, if they should come to the idea themselves that they are appealing to the lowest common denominator. Yes, and so that's the thing where it's Phoene kind of going, I'm not going to silence you.

00:39:17
Speaker 4: You've got to figure out why this is not okay.

00:39:20
Speaker 5: Well, yeah, and I agree with you that what they end up learning is like, oh, we can get great listeners just by also being ourselves. So it still comes down to I just want I just want listeners.

00:39:31
Speaker 1: I just want good ratings.

00:39:33
Speaker 3: Right, So they not about the responsibility to do something interesting. It's just like, you can be honest, don't try and be not be yourself. Was that a problem? Like being ourselves? We were horny little boys, Like, that's not being ourselves. Let's be honest. I don't know.

00:39:47
Speaker 2: It's so weird, but have something to say, I think is what this should have been about. And it didn't seem to be about that at all. So yeah, I agree, it was very strange.

00:39:56
Speaker 1: So we're in the school hallway.

00:39:57
Speaker 5: Jasmine Fontana tells Corey and Sean all the earls in the locker room we're talking about their show, and then asks when they'll be on the air again.

00:40:04
Speaker 1: Corey says real soon.

00:40:06
Speaker 5: But when she leaves, Corey and Sean have no idea how to do this, and then Corey says, Hi to mister Turner and his response is I don't know you. Mister Turner says Feenie gave them responsibility and they abused it. He can't do anything about it. Corey and Sean tried to convince Turner to talk to feene for them. Sean says, Feenie is totally ignoring the first commandment. Turner tells them to stay away from the radio station, but he's gonna talk to mister Feenie to see if he can give them a second chance. Cory and Sewan really want to get back on the air, and Corey knows they have to do it by themselves, and Sewn agrees and says they'll need.

00:40:40
Speaker 1: Some help, which okay.

00:40:44
Speaker 5: Jas they see Alvin in the hallway and ask him if the radio. They ask him if he knows about the radio station. He says it's his baby, and then they grab him and they go take a go take a look at the radio station, which he calls Junior.

00:41:00
Speaker 1: And then we're in the Matthew's kitchen.

00:41:01
Speaker 5: Amy is going through the mail and finds a ton of magazines for Eric. Eric is convinced Robin Leach is going to show up and give him millions of dollars, especially since he is buying so many magazines. He's bought one for every letter of the alphabet, so they can't miss him.

00:41:15
Speaker 4: I remember Chester, I remember that, Joe.

00:41:18
Speaker 3: I love that joke.

00:41:19
Speaker 4: I've heard from that magazine. This was the amazing thing.

00:41:22
Speaker 2: Though, as I'm watching this, I've now said Robin Leach ten times, and I still didn't remember that Rob le showed up.

00:41:28
Speaker 3: On the show. No, I was watching it going we're talking about Robin Leach an awful lot, and you know it was definitely a pre tape Robin Leach y and so I bet you, like, I might not have even been there when that happens, right, So like, I think that's why I don't remember it. But it's weird because I, of all the people we had on our show, I knew who Robin Leach was. Like everybody I remember.

00:41:51
Speaker 2: That, you just weren't there for it. It must have been one of those things where you're right, he showed up. We shot this once or twice and disappeared. So it's a you know, a total of an hour of our lives And I just didn't remember this at all at all. Yeah, and I do remember Chester.

00:42:07
Speaker 1: Yep magazine.

00:42:08
Speaker 5: You had to change your name in order to get it. It's a magazine for guy's name Chester. By the way, in this episode, I thought was going to be the one where you called yourself Kyle.

00:42:16
Speaker 3: I did do, I said to myself. I was thinking to myself and I was like, oh.

00:42:20
Speaker 5: This is the joke exactly watching that scene, and I went I also.

00:42:26
Speaker 3: Thought when this line was said, I had to change my name. I thought for sure when Robin Leach showed up that she's going to be written to Chester and that that's why you couldn't get it. And I was going to be like, oh nice. The payoff is that by you know, doing this scheme, and that makes more sense to me and actually builds on it than what does happen. We're just sitting very strange.

00:42:50
Speaker 5: Uh So Alan tells Eric he should earn money and work at his store. Eric is still convinced and he as he leaves the room, Alan says he's glad he changed his name. And this was really when I realized Eric is just one hundred into full blown dummy hood.

00:43:06
Speaker 2: Ye.

00:43:07
Speaker 4: All of a sudden and uh, I guess we're there.

00:43:10
Speaker 5: Yep, here we are, And then we're in mister Feenie's classroom. Mister Turner comes into Tel Feeni he heard his students were pulled off the air by censors.

00:43:18
Speaker 3: You guys, get a good look at Tony's pleats. These are.

00:43:24
Speaker 4: Cavalies, like sliced cheese on them.

00:43:27
Speaker 3: I was just like, I remember those kinds of pants, Like they're not cool anymore, but are they going to come back?

00:43:33
Speaker 1: They are cool again?

00:43:34
Speaker 5: Are they?

00:43:34
Speaker 1: Ze Cavalricci style pants, at least for in women's wear.

00:43:37
Speaker 3: Are very cool. I don't understand what that is. Is that a brand name.

00:43:42
Speaker 1: Or is it a brand name?

00:43:43
Speaker 5: But they were like a very specific Here I'll show you a picture of z cava Ricci's.

00:43:49
Speaker 1: And you will, you will remember them.

00:43:51
Speaker 4: It meets world sponsored bys.

00:43:53
Speaker 5: Like here's a pair of z Cavalricci pants. Well that's a bad picture, but they're now I mean they're currently available. These are real onesurrently available on Poschmark for three hundred dollars because they are true vintage z Cavarecci pants. But they were just extremely pleated, Like here's a good picture of one, like this is a picture of a pair of like z Cavalrici's on a wall women.

00:44:14
Speaker 3: Yeah, but I feel like there was a period where men had those Like I remember thinking like those are cool grown up, yes, that I would never that I would someday get to wear. And now I feel like if you have pleated khakis, people make fun of you.

00:44:26
Speaker 2: Uhats are just the are the slice in the in the front?

00:44:30
Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, so it's like to make it to take the excess fabric and like bring it in. So it's actually like a way to be slimmy, right, it's to.

00:44:39
Speaker 5: Show Well, actually it's the other way around. It's that it's it's to add fullness to a certain area. So they sinch material in at the top that makes it grow because of the pleats, so you can add fullness.

00:44:51
Speaker 1: It's one of the you know, it's yeah, it's.

00:44:53
Speaker 5: It was just cool. It was the style. I had a pair of z cavalcies. I thought they were so awesome.

00:44:58
Speaker 4: It's different than Sergio Valente correct.

00:45:00
Speaker 5: Correct, Okay, but yeah those pants are pretty awesome. And he really he pulled him off.

00:45:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, He's had like the tiniest waiste in the world, so it's very flattering on him.

00:45:10
Speaker 1: Very flattering.

00:45:11
Speaker 3: Yep, I remember thinking those kinds of pants were cool.

00:45:13
Speaker 4: And still in that shape. The man is still in that shape, and say.

00:45:17
Speaker 5: Well, Turner says no, his aunt Ruth was a hippie and Phoenie says his papa was a rolling stone. Phoene says the kids showed bad taste on the radio. Turner asks who decides what's bad taste and Phoenie says, you're looking at him. Mister Turner fights for Corey and Sean. The students really loved the show, but now that they but now they can do it with adult supervision. Phoenie asks which adult adult will be supervising and Turner says, you're looking at him, You're looking at him. Phoenie says he will take it under consideration. Then, as Turner's about to leave, Phoenie asks if his aunt Ruth was at Woodstock. Turner says no, and Phoenie says, well, it must have been a different Ruthie.

00:45:54
Speaker 1: Turner.

00:45:54
Speaker 2: Then two very important jokes happening there. One Foenie was that Woodstock, and two there's a good chance he was sleeping with women while he was there, so that and one of them may have been they made turners on.

00:46:11
Speaker 3: But now, actually, just age wise, does Phoenie being a Woodstock make any sense?

00:46:16
Speaker 4: Woodstock has been sixty eight nine.

00:46:20
Speaker 3: Eight sixty nine, so if he's like sixty five, it would have been in his thirty ninety Yeah, okay, see he would.

00:46:26
Speaker 4: Have always used to matter you learn in school on.

00:46:29
Speaker 3: The older side of addition subtraction.

00:46:31
Speaker 2: Yeah, well he would have been one of the security guards that was our parking or something like that.

00:46:35
Speaker 3: Because has Woodstock were like eighteen to exact four? So absolutely this is such a touchstone joke, by the way, like I feel like every time you don't hear this anymore. But it used to always be like, well I was at Woodstock or like characters being at Woodstock would be like a way to reference, like I used to be hip. But it's such a.

00:46:54
Speaker 4: Generation, so what would that be?

00:46:56
Speaker 3: Now?

00:46:56
Speaker 4: What would this generation's.

00:46:58
Speaker 3: Woodstock ninety nine?

00:47:02
Speaker 2: I tried to go to fire Oh wow, what is probably what it would have been?

00:47:06
Speaker 3: You know, I do think I think nowadays, if you want to be counter cultural, you've been to Burning Man. Yeah it's right, yeah, but Coachella's colla, Well, it depends on what you're saying, Like after in the day. No, going to Coachella nowadays just means you're into popular bands and you like to call a music festival.

00:47:27
Speaker 4: But when it started, wasn't it like an underground kind of.

00:47:31
Speaker 1: Way, more indie back in back in the day.

00:47:34
Speaker 4: Maybe I've never been. I would also.

00:47:37
Speaker 5: Music festival in the desert with Free Love is definitely they.

00:47:43
Speaker 3: Say free Love to meet Coachella culturally says we paid a lot of money to go be in the heat and watch bands we like. Like, there's nothing alternative about Coachella in my mind, maybe it started that way, but I've never thought of Coachella as anything other than a giant popular music festival, whereas like Burning Man is like it's subversive in some way, It's it's anti mainstream in the way that Woodstock was, right, Like that was the point of Woodstock is that it was the you know, the long haired hippies coming together and like counter Yeah, it was countercultural. Coachilla doesn't have a countercultural vibe at all.

00:48:18
Speaker 2: It's just did Lallapalooza have a countercultural will that have been one?

00:48:23
Speaker 5: If we talk about any more music festivals where none of us actually know what's going on with them, I'm gonna stab myself and the eyeball.

00:48:28
Speaker 3: Will we know what Lilith Fair was all about? And that was definitely you know, there's a there's a vibe and a culture surrounding Lilith Fair that we can reference, we can all acknowledge. Okay, okay, Lallapalooz. I think was more grunge, right, that was more alternative music. No, it was slightly alternative rock, all.

00:48:46
Speaker 4: Too loud and outside for me. That's all I know.

00:48:50
Speaker 5: Just then, music starts blasting through the overhead speakers as Corey and Sewn announced the Bad Boys are back.

00:48:56
Speaker 1: And then we're in the school hallway.

00:48:58
Speaker 5: Foenie and Turner walk in from the back of the hallway and head towards Turner's classroom to see that all of the students are excited. Turner and Feeney are angry that the boys went behind their backs, so they split off to find them. Now this is not an important thing, but it really bumped me that they come from back where the radio station is. We saw you guys take Alvin Meaes in that direction to go to the radio station, and yet Feenie and Turner come running around the corner and head down the hallway, only then to split up, and like, it's almost as if they know you guys were not in the radio station, but there had been nothing to give that away.

00:49:32
Speaker 3: Yet, right right.

00:49:35
Speaker 1: I actually went.

00:49:35
Speaker 5: Back and watched it again to see if maybe I missed At the top of it, you guys saying the bad boys of radio are back from a secret location. Like I was like, there has to have been, but no, somehow they were on a search for you, even though it should have been assumed that.

00:49:50
Speaker 1: You were, of course in the radio station.

00:49:52
Speaker 3: So your directorial brand is taking over. I was like this order, yeah, No, it didn't bother me on It was like, yeah. I also think something that we haven't talked about is like a very popular movie was Pump Up the Volume. Do you remember, Oh sure, Christ And that was all about a pirate radio station and like, and I feel like there was a sort of in the culture in a way that you don't hear that about that movie that much anymore, but back in the nineties, I feel like that movie was like loomed large, and so this whole idea of us like broadcasting from a secret location kind of would have just made sense to your average person watching the show.

00:50:31
Speaker 5: Well, Turner and phoene stop in their tracks when Corey says Phoenie wanted them to talk about the spring dance, but instead they're going to give them a spring dance right here and right now. Sean tells everyone to dance. And then when Corey and Sean are looking for a particular tape, Sean says out loud into the mic, it's behind the janitor's mops and they've just given away their location.

00:50:51
Speaker 3: And then I give a dough.

00:50:53
Speaker 4: You got a dough in there?

00:50:54
Speaker 3: Yeah, Simpsons weird, just be completely riffing on Simpsons because you had done it in an episode in first season.

00:51:02
Speaker 4: Yeah, I did it.

00:51:03
Speaker 2: I ad lived it at the table read and it got a big laugh, so they put it in. And then Rusty ad lived it during the run through, so they put it in right sore, So we do. And I've also noticed your is now taken over for your ha like they're trying.

00:51:15
Speaker 4: It's now the Corey and Sean thing. You're trying to get the double, the double going. Yeah.

00:51:21
Speaker 5: So two seconds later, mister Feeney finds them in the closet and Sean says, don't move. Maybe he doesn't see us.

00:51:27
Speaker 2: Were you going to bring this at the beginning of that, I thought so, yeah, yeah, I mean it's.

00:51:31
Speaker 3: So funny, Yeah yeah, I thought this was funny and it's.

00:51:34
Speaker 4: A great line.

00:51:34
Speaker 2: It's a great line, obviously, brilliant comedic beat, really really great.

00:51:49
Speaker 1: So then we're in the radio studio.

00:51:50
Speaker 5: Mister feoene brings Corey and Sean back into the studio to talk to mister Turner. They asked Turner if he listened to the show and if he has any constructive criticism. Mister Turner is upset they didn't go with what they agreed on, and Sean said mister Feeney wasn't going to listen to him anyway. Turner says he was on the verge of giving them a second chance, and then they demonstrated why they don't deserve it. Corey says they were exercising their freedom of speech. Mister Turner asks them to explain why they turned the school into a rave and explain why it was so important they had to shaft him. Corey says he wouldn't understand, so Turner says, explain it like I'm stupid. He also accidentally flips on the radio light and we see it in glary.

00:52:31
Speaker 2: Possibly miss it, but you're sitting down and talking slow to him, so funny.

00:52:38
Speaker 4: I laughed out loud at that.

00:52:39
Speaker 2: That was really really fun I didn't remember it, but I was I didn't either.

00:52:44
Speaker 1: That's funny.

00:52:45
Speaker 4: That was really really funny.

00:52:48
Speaker 1: I also love his response.

00:52:49
Speaker 5: Sean starts talking super slow to him, and Turner says, pretend I'm smarter.

00:52:53
Speaker 3: Smarter.

00:52:54
Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought that was funny. Sean says, they were trying to find their place, and they're only seventh graders, They're no buddy. Turner turns on the mics. As we've already said, they are honest with mister Turner about being lost, and he says that's all they need to do. He reveals that they are on air and a lot of people are calling in, and then we do get the insert shot of all the phones calling in from.

00:53:14
Speaker 1: Where where are they calling from?

00:53:20
Speaker 5: Their first caller is mister Feenie, who compliments how mister Turner handled it and then says he has a question, what do you think is a proper punishment for these students? Turner says one week detention. Phoene says, I'm sorry. The radio signal must have gone out. Turner changes his answer to one month, and Phoene says he hears him loud and clear. And then Eric is the next caller who says to lock them up and throw away the key. Turner says they actually got off easy, and then Ludwig comes in with his father from the embassy and tells them Corey and Sean are the ones who tried to lock him up, and you guys jump up and have your frozen little faces and.

00:53:57
Speaker 3: Does this have to do with anything? It's what does this have to do with anything? Weird?

00:54:01
Speaker 4: So wah.

00:54:03
Speaker 3: It was scared that what the German embassy are gonna what like we've learned our lesson.

00:54:13
Speaker 4: Now, but now the Germans are after us, like what the hell is happening?

00:54:18
Speaker 3: So weird. I know exactly what happened. I know that they just the writers just love that the Ludwig character, you know, and you know what built throughout the week. It was probably like a one off joke about the phone call the German hours next and they're like, what if what if we saw the German kids right? And it did? It naturally evolved? And I totally, like I said, I actually really loved that kid after and I think it's funny, But then to have it be the end of the episode, Oh god, that's just wo Well.

00:54:46
Speaker 5: Then we're in the Matthew's living room. Eric is on the couch watching TV. Alan says, it's Friday night, go hang with girls and friends. Eric says, no money, no girls, no friends. Alan says, at least he has his magazines. The doorbell rings and Alan opens the door to see Robin Leach and some security guys. Eric thinks he's pulling his leg. And I'm going to assume they had to have asked ed McMahon to do this first, and he just couldn't do it, and then they just filled in Robin Leech heer.

00:55:13
Speaker 3: Maybe, and now what does this? I was trying to figure out why this. I kept thinking, Okay, this is going to be a dream sequence. That's why first they and it really should have been, because it makes no sense and none of it actually makes any sense.

00:55:27
Speaker 1: But why aren't there cameras right?

00:55:29
Speaker 3: Why is Robin Leach narrating to nobody? He is narrating what he's doing. Even at the end, after everybody leaves, Robin Leach is on the couch and he's narrating for no reason.

00:55:40
Speaker 4: There's no cameras, right, I.

00:55:41
Speaker 2: Guess the cameras are supposed to still be in front of Dorothy's house waiting for her to.

00:55:46
Speaker 3: Yeah, but then why is he narrated? Why is he talking?

00:55:49
Speaker 4: None of it, None of it makes any sense.

00:55:51
Speaker 5: It's absurd unless part of the joke is that he's so into the bit.

00:55:55
Speaker 1: It's not really even for the cameras. This is just all just.

00:56:00
Speaker 4: Going to the bathroom.

00:56:02
Speaker 3: But that's how you make that a joke. Yeah, don't just do it.

00:56:05
Speaker 2: I'm now turning on the thirty one install of it, Like you do like that?

00:56:08
Speaker 4: Yeah, yes, that would have been funny.

00:56:10
Speaker 3: I did love how you guys dismiss him completely once you know it's not for you. I thought that that you go from like two like.

00:56:17
Speaker 5: All right, I guess, and you're right for sure that this would have been funnier. And a way to keep it not in a dream sequence is oh my gosh, I'm going to win, and then it's to Chester and it is his alter ego, but he doesn't get to keep your money Chester.

00:56:30
Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.

00:56:33
Speaker 2: Well.

00:56:33
Speaker 5: Robin Leech has a lot of lines. He says them all very fast too. Eric asks to see the check. Robin opens it and Eric starts jumping up and down until he realizes the name on the check says Dorothy Muldoon. Alan says, that's not you Chester. Robin says it's their neighbor who isn't home and asks if they can just sit and wait at their house until the winners get home. Robin talks about the great sofa and how wonderful the family is and details the thirty inch console television set, his Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous stick, and then we go to credits.

00:57:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, which again with Egg McMahon thing like, what does Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous have to do with showing up with a check? Like these are two different ideas that are completely just merged with a guy on TV with a voice.

00:57:16
Speaker 2: Yeah, it was an odd episode for me, and I was we were on a run for a while where I was liking most of them coming out, and this one to me felt.

00:57:24
Speaker 3: A danger boy. It just really was a solid classic boy. Yeah, this felt like a sort of pestige.

00:57:31
Speaker 4: Also, And I think you kind of touched on this a little bit righter.

00:57:33
Speaker 2: I remember this being kind of a pivotal episode, and I don't think it was. And I think the reason I remember it being so important was simply because of that one line of dialogue that we have quoted for thirty years.

00:57:48
Speaker 3: Well, but I also just think the idea of like taking over a radio station, right like, we had a lot of guest stars, you know, it's it's just that thing. But between the the experience of acting in something, and I know I've mentioned this before, like and then other times, like like when we talk about danger Boy, right like, what we remember is the roller coaster right right now watching it, it's that moment when Ben breaks in the classroom and says, everything's fun I'm doing It's like and it's like that probably didn't even register that was happening that week for most of us, because it was just Ben's amazing performance and Corey, you know this line and then this seemed so like what what actually is like lasts from an episode wasn't what sticks in our memory the most often because we were so into this the immediacy of what was going on, and I think the immediacy of this episode was super fun for us. I think like we were all happy, fun, like it's the obviously you and Rusty were just bantering and loving me, you know, all of this, so we we think about this episode as like with fond memories. But now we can watch it and be sort of critics.

00:58:50
Speaker 4: Yeah.

00:58:52
Speaker 5: Well, as someone who wasn't there that week and someone who wasn't in the episode, I think perhaps you guys are being a little too critical of it.

00:58:58
Speaker 3: I didn't definitely. I mean it's a romp, right, Like, the idea is that it's supposed to just be fun.

00:59:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, and the fact that you know, when you actually dissect what free speech means and it blah blah blah. I mean, truthfully, a lot of a lot of people don't understand the difference between no I gets the right to say something versus whether you know more.

00:59:18
Speaker 3: I wanted to bring it up because it's one of those things that bothers me.

00:59:21
Speaker 1: That right, right, culturally that was still that right. Yes, still don't understand.

00:59:25
Speaker 3: I didn't deal with it very well back then. You know, I'm not blaming the show. I'm just no, I just it's one of the many things that I'm like, really, this episode's a little mixed.

00:59:33
Speaker 4: I just think we've done better romps.

00:59:35
Speaker 3: We've done that.

00:59:36
Speaker 2: I've been involved with better romps than this previous rom Guys.

00:59:40
Speaker 5: I once did a show where I was covered in honey and there was a bear and it was great, sad.

00:59:46
Speaker 1: I just remember it being an amazing romp.

00:59:49
Speaker 4: That never happened.
