The Golf Smack Down Seen Around The World with Ex-NHL Player Nick Tarnasky
Former NHL enforcer Nick Tarnasky joins the mic to set the record straight on the viral July 4th golf course brawl at Alberta Springs Golf Course in Red Deer, Alberta. He reveals how a slow‑play dispute escalated when an intoxicated golfer, Trevor Ogilvie, challenged his group—then physically charged at him. Now, Tarnasky addresses the fallout: comments from his NHL and coaching peers, the RCMP investigation that ended with no charges, and how this incident has thrust him back into the spotlight long after retiring from pro hockey .

[SPEAKER_01]: Today, on Misunderstood with Rachel Yucatan. [SPEAKER_01]: Guy playing multiple hockey levels, tosses ass in the pond after telling him he's gonna do it. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna tell you, I'm gonna tell you in this water you watch him out. [SPEAKER_01]: And this is a nice warning. [SPEAKER_02]: It's very rare that you see a video like this where the person doing the hitting gets so much support from people. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm glad everybody got a good laugh out of it, and I had a good experience watching it. [SPEAKER_02]: In the moment, did you recall that you were narrating while hitting him? [SPEAKER_02]: Have you seen the apology video he made? [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was great. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was pretty well received by everybody. [SPEAKER_01]: It made people laugh. [SPEAKER_01]: It made people enjoy their day. [SPEAKER_02]: If you could say anything to Trevor now, what would you say? [SPEAKER_01]: It's great that he came out of the video. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not going to be a whole dryer. [SPEAKER_01]: He just gets a person that came out and said, hey, I screwed up. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm happy that you've been able to release that video that part of you can hopefully move on to it for himself as well. [SPEAKER_02]: Nick, thanks for joining me today and misunderstood. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, you have been one of the most talked about people this week. [SPEAKER_02]: How does that feel? [SPEAKER_01]: That means been a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: It's been a little overwhelming. [SPEAKER_01]: You're honest, not really much of a social media person. [SPEAKER_01]: I just kind of keep to myself in the most part. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's been a lot. [SPEAKER_01]: Obviously. [SPEAKER_01]: kind of nice to hear from a ton of people that I haven't talked to in years or, you know, from my past, it's actually been kind of cool in our regard to catch up with some folks and kind of even regardless of what the conversation is, catch it up and have touch-based with people from the past and make sure that everybody's still doing well. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: That's got to be the upside of it for sure. [SPEAKER_02]: So before we get into kind of what happened, really briefly, can you, for people that don't even know the story, don't know you, can you just tell people a little bit about who you are? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so former NHL hockey player, also former minor league hockey player played in Russia. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I spent thirteen season spent professionally from two thousand four to two thousand sixteen. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's kind of my background, you know, play hockey for every group of small town here in Alberta, Canada and just kind of ran with it to ultimately like my mid-thirties. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, amazing. [SPEAKER_02]: And are you still involved now, are you a coach? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so now I'm coaching you seventy triple and red deer and the red deer minority association. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's good opportunity there to give back a little bit of communities that are in the province. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm from and you know, open mentor kids and become kind of what they want to be amazing. [SPEAKER_02]: I love it. [SPEAKER_02]: So before we get into what everybody is seeing, can you talk to us about that day beforehand? [SPEAKER_02]: What led up to that day? [SPEAKER_02]: What were you doing? [SPEAKER_02]: What was the plan? [SPEAKER_02]: Who were you with? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, there's not, I mean, it's, I do a pretty much the same thing every day. [SPEAKER_01]: Go to work and then that I'm going to be a Friday. [SPEAKER_01]: So we ducked out early just to get up a bit with, with our buddies as my buddy Chad and his buddy Kyle. [SPEAKER_01]: It was a normal day, like we, we get only a short golf season here in Alberta. [SPEAKER_01]: So if you can duck at a work at three o'clock, no, things will be around that it's nice to get out and enjoy sunshine. [SPEAKER_02]: So you guys obviously got it on on video, which was awesome for everyone to see. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you guys normally film what's going on or did one of your buddies start to film when he saw what was happening? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I might buddy chat guy to this phone and just video tape. [SPEAKER_01]: You just obviously, you never really know what's going to come of it. [SPEAKER_01]: So you grab the video just to kind of be sure of, you know, there was some facts that that weren't straight or whatever. [SPEAKER_01]: The case may be so we grabbed that just kind of well, you know, this looks cool. [SPEAKER_01]: So I better grab this on film just you never know. [SPEAKER_02]: right you never know what's going to happen so can you can you tell us what that moment was I think you were at whole fourteen or fifteen right and and you had been getting annoyed for the last couple of holes because the guy was taking too long can you tell us a little bit about what happened [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and also he was having a he's having a self a day and I think he just kind of lost track of kind of what was going on having a course kind of in terms of how that the etiquette and the the pace of play and how you treat people and yeah he was just having a self too much fun and understand that and [SPEAKER_01]: So by the time we caught up on all the fifteen, we were back, you know, back logged with three or four groups there and it was taking so much and yeah, whatever came of the camera that it wasn't really something that you planned to leave the golf course with that story or with that experience. [SPEAKER_01]: So, and normally the golf course that just kind of went to shit really fast. [SPEAKER_02]: So are you normally like a hot headed person? [SPEAKER_02]: Are you somebody that's confrontational or did this kind of come out of nowhere? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's one of the things, right? [SPEAKER_01]: I fall for a living for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for [SPEAKER_01]: No, never. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay, so can you tell people a little bit about what happened? [SPEAKER_02]: Did he start provoking you? [SPEAKER_02]: Was he fighting with everyone or how did it come down to that moment where we finally see what happens? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I think it sounds like it kind of has the day when it sounds like he had, he was kind of looking for a fight with anybody that would doubt fight in and there was several people that kind of were, you know, somewhat nervous about what was going on in the course. [SPEAKER_01]: So I just thought, you know, a little bigger than I know, I could probably just maybe maybe the few situations get to get the fellas moving along by just saying, Hey, let's get moving along here and, you know, I see in the video that kind of escalates into what happens in the video, but [SPEAKER_01]: It's just a situation where I honestly think the guys were just having too much fun and it really got blown on her portion with kind of the way they're acting. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, of course. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, and then at what moment did you realize? [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, was there a second that you kind of feared for your safety? [SPEAKER_02]: And that's why you decided to lose it and start hitting him or like what was going through your mind at that moment? [SPEAKER_01]: I guess it's one of those things where you sound like you're always kind of thinking you've got to protect yourself first and it didn't I don't know the guy. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know what was going on in his mind. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: Um, kind of what he's capable of and says, well, I just, you know, protect him, protect myself first and like even look at my friends, you know, it's like, is this really going on like, uh, this is, I'm glad everybody got a good laugh out of it and you know, had a good experience washing it, but it was, you know, it's just a strange, strange data, strange experience on the golf course. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: When it was happening at any point where you like, oh my god, this is going to become a big deal or where you just did you not even think that would happen. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like they said, I'm not really a social media person. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't really know how it works. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's one of those things where like, was this really happening? [SPEAKER_01]: I really, it's not something I think of like, oh, this is going to be a great video. [SPEAKER_01]: It's more like, man, I don't really know. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm so confused as to how this is happening and what's going on around me that like, I just kind of protect myself first and, um, and finally just go from there. [SPEAKER_02]: How did the video actually come out? [SPEAKER_02]: Do one of your friends end up posting it? [SPEAKER_02]: I forget what happened. [SPEAKER_01]: We had no idea. [SPEAKER_01]: It's from a group chat to a group chat or something. [SPEAKER_01]: We don't know where it came from. [SPEAKER_02]: And someone, someone somewhere saw it. [SPEAKER_02]: And then it got bigger and bigger. [SPEAKER_01]: Exactly. [SPEAKER_02]: And do you recall, I mean, in the moment, did you recall that you were narrating while hitting him? [SPEAKER_01]: No, it's like if he says one of those things are so bizarre that I was like, you know, like it's just kind of like just kind of what they're just kind of trying to enjoy a stupid situation like I don't I really don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just kind of came out of nowhere. [SPEAKER_01]: I just I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: It's just I just tell a few bodies like, you know, you go bowling or something. [SPEAKER_01]: We always buy out a bag if you get a striker something funny or you just kind of get in the moment and have a fun kind of run with it and have a bit of a decent time. [SPEAKER_01]: And though, you know, the whole time it was kind of like I'm trying to diffuse the situation and it's not working. [SPEAKER_01]: I don't know, it's just kind of, you know, I think that's not been just for a good laugh. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, what was the fallout after like the cop showed up, what ended up happening? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so just they came talked about this and explained to him that, you know, it sounded like, you know, he had been threatening a few other people and he had been kind of looking for fighting, which like I like we say, you know what, you have, you have yourself a day, you had a lot of fun, you made some mistakes, hey, people understand that. [SPEAKER_01]: So the cops just said that you know what I've been talking about it and it's like, you know, like they had already received several complaints. [SPEAKER_01]: So they just said, hey, you know, enjoy the rest of your day. [SPEAKER_01]: There's not really much here for you. [SPEAKER_01]: You didn't, you know, you didn't, you know, it was a, [SPEAKER_01]: You know, ultimately, you both agreed to fight and had happened. [SPEAKER_01]: So there's not really something we can do about it. [SPEAKER_02]: Did Trevor, that's the guy's name, who you hit, did he get kicked off the course? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he went home after that. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's the last scene of oh my, I mean, and was he like apologizing? [SPEAKER_02]: Was he like, oh, I want to press charges? [SPEAKER_02]: Like, what was his reaction when the cops came? [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, he was already gone in the cops came. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he was. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he'd already hit it home. [SPEAKER_01]: So I don't know what happened to them. [SPEAKER_02]: Got it. [SPEAKER_02]: So have you seen the apology video he made? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And what do you, what do you have to say about that? [SPEAKER_01]: I thought it was great. [SPEAKER_01]: I think he, he came out and made a pretty cool video to kind of, you know, put a little bit of, I think a little bit of humor on his side into it and understood kind of what happened. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think that's all, all of us could ask a fan. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think I think it was pretty well received by everybody and ultimately kind of just, you know, hopefully just kind of put this whole thing in the bed that you know, he doesn't seem to bad dude. [SPEAKER_01]: came with pretty pretty good video. [SPEAKER_01]: I think I've really got a pretty good chocolate to that to and he understands like why what happened happened and you know that it probably could have been avoided but I mean I thought it was pretty good spirit for him and you know that was that was probably good enough for me. [SPEAKER_02]: It's very rare that you see a video like this where the person doing the hitting gets so much support from people. [SPEAKER_02]: I know that like even, you know, Pat McAfee was talking about you so many people have made memes about this. [SPEAKER_02]: What does that feel like? [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's great. [SPEAKER_01]: It's great in the sense that it made people laugh, it made people enjoy their day. [SPEAKER_01]: I really don't care about the pads on the back that kind of thing. [SPEAKER_01]: It's not like I said it. [SPEAKER_01]: We don't go to the golf course to make viral videos and get on the internet. [SPEAKER_01]: We just go to golf and for something to comment that I don't know. [SPEAKER_01]: Hopefully there is a good lesson learned, but ultimately like [SPEAKER_01]: No one was served seriously and people got a good laugh out of it and it's, you know, ultimately, it is what it is that in that sense that I don't really care about memes and those things, I don't really use them. [SPEAKER_01]: But people enjoyed it and that's no one's served. [SPEAKER_01]: That's kind of in the story. [SPEAKER_02]: Totally. [SPEAKER_02]: Was there any negative fallout like was anyone from your work like, what the hell are you doing or it was? [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I mean, we have some discussions with people who kind of explained what went on, but yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: It's obviously when there's a video that so many people see that'll call for discussion to kind of make sure everybody's understand what happened and that obviously could have been avoidable from both sides. [SPEAKER_01]: However, it did happen and as long as people understand why and that's what we're working you do. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: If you could say anything to Trevor now, what would you say? [SPEAKER_01]: I'm not just, I just think it's great that he came out of the video. [SPEAKER_01]: Hey, whatever, it's not something that I'm not going to be a whole garage. [SPEAKER_01]: He's got some person that came out and said, hey, I screwed up. [SPEAKER_01]: We all saw the video. [SPEAKER_01]: He's probably not feeling great about it. [SPEAKER_01]: So hey, good for you to come out and say, hey, I screwed up. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I was only saying thing, right? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, that's part of part of being in a video like that in my opinion that you came out and owned it and what more can you ask a someone that [SPEAKER_01]: He's going to take some negative feedback that he's took it with a grain of salt and it seems like the best he could do. [SPEAKER_01]: That's why I'm happy that he was able to reset video of the apology and hopefully move on to it for himself as well. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think what the internet, the only other thing we could ask for is if, you know, next time you guys are at the golf course, maybe you'll run into each other and play around with each other. [SPEAKER_02]: That would be super, super funny. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, we'll feel the hat. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we'll see about that. [SPEAKER_02]: All right. [SPEAKER_02]: Do you're not striking up any friendship anytime soon and ask him to play golf, I guess? [SPEAKER_01]: I'll probably just keep it my same group of golf friends for the time being. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_02]: Awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: I will. [SPEAKER_02]: I appreciate you being on the show. [SPEAKER_02]: Good luck with everything.
