[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Forty K-Lorecast.
[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Forty Kaylor Cases to me John Barsodian, Brad Chester.
[SPEAKER_00]: On today's cast, we're jumping into the fleets of the Imperium for the second time because we've recorded this before.
[SPEAKER_00]: And yeah, we're doing it again because my audio didn't come through.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think as much as you're trying to make the difficulty level come up because you're like, Brad, how are you feeling?
[SPEAKER_02]: That time, and I was like, really good John, we should rock this up.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're super excited about everything.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then John went, hey, how are you today?
[SPEAKER_02]: And I'm like, I got hit by a bus.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, you know, we don't have any audio.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Forty K. Laura cast is a weekly podcast focused in the lore of the Warhammer Forty K universe releasing every Monday at seven PM Eastern time.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you like the show, please comment on it and like it and following us on Spotify and whatever you listen on really does help us.
[SPEAKER_00]: Additionally, we have now launched a Patreon for our fans.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Patreon simply gives you access to the show ad free for four dollars in ninety nine cents US.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to take the time to learn them in other nationalities because that's what most of our Patreon's actually are.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that also according those.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also in the show notes, you'll see links to our merchandise, but more importantly, to our discord.
[SPEAKER_00]: We have a wonderful discord that I could not be more proud of despite costly throwing the burn to the ground if it ever ceases to be amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: But our discord is designed for all of our listeners in mind.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is meant to be a place that people who find forty-k interesting and enjoyable can go and interact in a healthy environment to get advice for hobby and painting, reading.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's also a really the best place unless you know, see me on the street to explain to talk to me about the cast themselves.
[SPEAKER_00]: Brad and I are both in there.
[SPEAKER_00]: A ton, so please join.
[SPEAKER_00]: Big thank you to Query, Kathulu, Gersback, Nougal, Steve, Doc, Maestro, Snaz and Salasia for moderating that discord.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're doing a hell of a job keeping it not just moderated in the sense of
[SPEAKER_00]: you know what we allow don't allow but also keeping it organized and structured it really is a very easy to interact with discord let's talk about ships because it's cool last week we covered how warp travel is done all the components to it and in some of the structure lightly of the imperium
[SPEAKER_00]: This week we want to spend a bit more time on to kind of two main parts of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: First is going to be the merchant fleet, which is the largest, and then the Imperial Navy, which I think has the bigger play in the lore.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why we structure it that way.
[SPEAKER_02]: The merchant fleet isn't just bigger.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's like saying that
[SPEAKER_02]: I'm slightly shorter than the Empire State building.
[SPEAKER_02]: The merchant fleet is a massive, massive fleet.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to go into it more and more, but there's, it is the most diverse elements amongst our weaponry includes such the first elements as.
[SPEAKER_02]: And if you don't know the reference, what are you doing with your life?
[SPEAKER_02]: Also, there's just so many shifts because this is the people that do everything for the Imperium from bringing widgets to food to making sure everybody doesn't die.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep, it's the way that the imperium is structured.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's covered in the last fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's broke up into segmentums.
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of them are kind of fun, like the sole segmentum, and some of them are nightmare zones, like the ultimate segmentum.
[SPEAKER_00]: But in each segmentum, travel and trade moves through within the merchant fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's controlled in each section by what's called the segmentum fortress.
[SPEAKER_00]: In a segmentum fortress is the hub of all trade, but also all military will get to them in a minute in this portion of the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the merchant fleet, the Navy fleets, civilian fleets, inquisitorial fleets, admiques, basemrines, all of them interact with a segmentum fortress.
[SPEAKER_00]: Think of it like an air traffic control for the entire segmentum.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, because they want to know who everyone is.
[SPEAKER_02]: air traffic control, but you're always flying into a military zone because if you do not respond back, they're most commonly just blowing you up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and we could let's jump into the segment in fortresses.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the segment in fortress itself, as Brad was just saying, this is a fortress in a imperial that is on a war footing.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that these segment in fortresses first and foremost are a full-blown naval fortress.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is not, it is a trading depot, but it's a trading depot surrounded by the largest military force you'll ever see.
[SPEAKER_00]: Possibly in history, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: But it's, yeah, I was just about to say it's
[SPEAKER_02]: If these are fortresses and you just think, oh, it's a fortress.
[SPEAKER_02]: No, these are mobile moon slash planets that are fortified with every possible weapon, every possible defense.
[SPEAKER_02]: Also surrounded by a ton of large ships.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have everything from battleships to frigates.
[SPEAKER_02]: Everything are all around these because these are such wildly important hubs.
[SPEAKER_02]: They also have a ton
[SPEAKER_02]: on of everything you need to resupply from food to resources to fuel to actual troops and people to get into your ships.
[SPEAKER_02]: One of the biggest things about these fortresses is they are ready to resupply a huge amount of fleets and everything else because they have to be.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're in a war society like the entire economy is based on war.
[SPEAKER_02]: When things go badly, which they frequently do, even though we tell everyone when every single battle.
[SPEAKER_02]: This has
[SPEAKER_02]: supplies, be it munitions, be it people.
[SPEAKER_02]: And that includes, they actually have extra, extra path navigators in here that are four other ships.
[SPEAKER_02]: They basically can have the ability to poach navigators, and that's because almost every big ship has extras because of the fact that especially if you're in obscures, that's one of the biggest things that
[SPEAKER_02]: The cast forces try to do their experts at trying to cripple ships.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, by just killing the astronauts and killing navigators.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it gives you a hub situation to build off of because exactly your point.
[SPEAKER_00]: If all of a sudden the battleship will cover them later loses its navigator.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to then not be able to use the battleship for a while.
[SPEAKER_00]: This way you can actually either, you know, if it's nearby, you can come back to the hub or more importantly, you can throw the extra navigator on a frigate and fire the frigate really quickly over the battleship to then, you know, re-supply effectively.
[SPEAKER_00]: These things, because again, when we talked about the segmentums, they're meant to all operate almost independently.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, it's not even almost independent.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's pretty much independent, unless you get, unless Bobby G shows up or bold, stormy carriers type things to show up, you're operating independently of each other.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another key thing about these fortresses, though, is they're also used for trading.
[SPEAKER_00]: As we said, within the segmentums, all the trade occurs, but there are some supplies that have to go back to, so like, impossibility, or whatever, you know, no, not, not because there's plenty of adamantium obviously.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's not enough on obtaining them, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: On obtaining them.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the one I'm thinking.
[SPEAKER_00]: I said a possibility.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know there's one in there.
[SPEAKER_00]: On obtaining them.
[SPEAKER_00]: So those ones have to go back to salt, but those are very special or not just so even other segments.
[SPEAKER_00]: Those are very special journeys.
[SPEAKER_00]: So these fortresses serve as a holding point for those ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: So stuff comes in, gets load up, and then the ships that do those travels, that's where they come through.
[SPEAKER_00]: Obviously, there's a very critical fortresses.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is also why they tend to be positioned in really key areas.
[SPEAKER_00]: For example, in Seoul, the fortress sits right above Mars.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's the biggest and most important trading hub.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's what it really is in the entire imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: On in obscurs, it sits a, there's a forge road, they'd site from Monday, and several Monday's one of the largest forces.
[SPEAKER_00]: Galaxie.
[SPEAKER_02]: You were really not given its justice.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's, it's big.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not necromancy.
[SPEAKER_00]: It might be number two behind Necramanda and Necramanda's got a lot of issues.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're being honest.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is what was the police fortress?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so each fortress is ruled by a pair of individuals.
[SPEAKER_00]: The first one is called the administrative master.
[SPEAKER_00]: This person is just a pure bureaucrat.
[SPEAKER_00]: They oversee all logistics
[SPEAKER_02]: I think that they're bots to be honest.
[SPEAKER_02]: So I really think that no matter what, because everybody's in hands that does any of these things.
[SPEAKER_02]: So these guys have to, they're bureaucrats and you're put them down a little bit, but man, they are in charge of, yes, like just crazy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are bureaucrats, but their job is to oversee all the logistics moving around their system.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is air traffic control, police officer, Coast Guard, everything, all rolled into one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Interestingly, their job is to enforce all the rules and regulations, but they don't have the ability to grant overrides or anything at that level.
[SPEAKER_00]: That has to come back from the made administrative.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, for example, if you are operating within the segmentum, it's not this individual who gives you your charter.
[SPEAKER_00]: That still has to come all the way back from the main administrative, but this is the individual who would say, you know, your driver's license is not valid.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's kind of their job.
[SPEAKER_00]: Also, on the same fortress, though, is the inverse of this person.
[SPEAKER_00]: This person, come up more later.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a Lord Hayatma.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Lord Hayatma is a naval officer.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're the highest ranking naval officer in the entire segment at this point.
[SPEAKER_00]: They have ultimate authority over the area.
[SPEAKER_00]: They decide, you know, where the naval fleet goes.
[SPEAKER_00]: They decide in the engagements.
[SPEAKER_00]: They decide the movement of troops.
[SPEAKER_00]: They can even, they actually do believe, can override charters on that mistake.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they have pure, unadulterated power.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is because each Lord high admiral, they're ranked out by segment.
[SPEAKER_00]: The highest ranking Lord high admiral is the one is the Lord high admiral for the sole system.
[SPEAKER_00]: That person's a high lord of terror.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did mildly strong position versus Captain Burek resting on the other side?
[SPEAKER_00]: True.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, with that set up, I wanted to kind of die a bit more into the merchant fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I kind of zeroing in on what makes up the merchant fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you have
[SPEAKER_00]: Inside the segment, the merchant fleet itself operates.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then within that segment, there is what administrator who watches over it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the actual breakdown of it is kind of interesting to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: So every single ship in the entire imperium has to have some sort of charter on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, your charter could be a road trader charter, the word of trade.
[SPEAKER_00]: It could be inquisitorial, space marine, R-Bite, ad-Mec, they each have their own.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that the same is true for the merchants, which is called a fleet charter, also known as forklift certified, or the Imperial Galleries.
[SPEAKER_00]: You drive.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's pretty cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's more impressive than someone who's not forklift certified, but it's forklift certified.
[SPEAKER_00]: What a fleet charter gives you the ability to do is it simply means you can be the captain of a ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: But that ship, you don't really get much say over and over where it goes, because you're the captain of a ship that's part of a fleet.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is a big deal because they actually stayed it in some of the writings that the fleet commander, whoever is leading this.
[SPEAKER_02]: can strip them of their title as a captain and it'll be wrote and they give it to another person, but they can do it at any time.
[SPEAKER_02]: So like if you're standing there and the flea commander decides, you're not doing a good job, they do the whole punch.
[SPEAKER_02]: Who's the head grip?
[SPEAKER_02]: Punch a good grab.
[SPEAKER_01]: Punch the face.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hard.
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's gross man gets to tell that what's going on while he's doing his dance, but like these guys just get shot sometimes.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, you got delayed in the warp.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is for sure your fault.
[SPEAKER_02]: First in command, shoot guy in the face.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's not you're the captain now.
[SPEAKER_00]: He doesn't Vader on him.
[SPEAKER_00]: in the eight, one hundred percent and so all because that's all these guys are they're just a guy who's allowed to be the captain, according to administrative, but this person has no seal for the trade routes that they go or anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: Basically flying the small ship near the big ship that's got the guy who has the real charter on it.
[SPEAKER_02]: But you're also
[SPEAKER_02]: You're the fall guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's be honest, a lot of these guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: A lot of times.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I like these guys are full guys, but let's get to one that's actually entering.
[SPEAKER_00]: So in in ranking, these guys are the next up from the bottom, but I find them the most interesting and it's called the free chart.
[SPEAKER_02]: These guys are this is this is actually.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is one of the many things that I think that Cavill's fortication could be around because these guys show up everywhere.
[SPEAKER_00]: The free charter is a charter given to a captain of an independent vessel.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's not part of a larger fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: This independent person is allowed to do kind of whatever they want with their vessel within reason, obviously.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they decide where they go.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what that means is they actually are truly out there emergent.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're going out there finding out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Well,
[SPEAKER_00]: Planet X needs someone to take goods over to planet Q, and they're willing to pay this much for it.
[SPEAKER_00]: The planet F is willing to pay this much, takes up the planet E. And this is this becomes their goal, because a key thing about this is that the Imperium itself, trade within the Imperium occurs on a mostly of very macro scale.
[SPEAKER_00]: We are moving food, water, supplies for the military footing weapons.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what this is.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everything's designed around, hey, we've got this mining world on planet Y. And they are mining all day.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we need a fleet of ships to take stuff from that to a forge world.
[SPEAKER_00]: These guys don't touch that.
[SPEAKER_00]: What these guys do touch is on planet, you know, mercurial, they have actual beef.
[SPEAKER_00]: And very wealthy people would like to eat that beef.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't make enough beef for the Imperium to really create a trade route for them, so these free charter guys would then be the ones who take those from one place to another.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's a big deal because they're going, hey, everybody can eat corp starch.
[SPEAKER_02]: We're not restricting it to only be corp starch, but also as long as everyone's alive there, we just don't care at all.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, well, well, well, to be fair, I went too far for the appearance.
[SPEAKER_02]: They said everybody's alive there.
[SPEAKER_02]: What I meant to say was as long as they're still meeting their quotas, I don't care.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: But this is, I think Brad and my love of this also may come for the fact that we both played win commander private here back in the day, which I just looked up and discovered when it came out.
[SPEAKER_00]: And third that's getting a big no it's more it's more it's more
[SPEAKER_00]: Well, actually barely more.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's that thirty two years ago.
[SPEAKER_00]: The.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like this.
[SPEAKER_02]: This makes me think of that, but it also makes me think of firefly.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, this is where you can get the even though the Imperium's a nightmare.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is where the excitement comes from because these guys also get the shism some shenanigans because you're talking about very small level operators that are a lot of times taking the dangerous.
[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks.
[SPEAKER_02]: Those are also the things those pirates want to hit because you're taking a expensive good that also if you don't make it the Imperium's not super like the actual Imperium.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're not even they'll take care of they don't want piracy, but also like the actual food got there you just didn't get the better food there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and my guess is there's a little bit of this, like the game star field becomes the play and this a little bit too.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a few little different ways that this one, the other way is this one can manifest itself.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the free charters are super cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: Beyond the free charters, you get to what's called the heredity charter.
[SPEAKER_00]: And these ones are both good and bad.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the heredity charter is a trading charter that can then be passed down from generation.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you now are you and your family are now ship captains.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, but there's two things.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we'll go into the bad.
[SPEAKER_02]: We'll go into the good because these also have a lot of disparity between them because our red and each charter is often, these, some of these families are, but Nian has rich.
[SPEAKER_02]: You're talking about, yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know,
[SPEAKER_00]: The Hilton's and all this, you know what I mean?
[SPEAKER_00]: The key thing about a heredity charter, though, is that unlike the free charter we just covered, where they can go anywhere they want, the heredity charter means you and your ancestors can take the following route, you know, World A to World D. That's it.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's for the rest of your family's existence.
[SPEAKER_00]: You are going to trade from World A to World D. There may be a couple extra routes in there, but effectively, that's what you do.
[SPEAKER_00]: the problem with that is that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes, World A or World D ceases to be a place you want to be going to.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the Imperium doesn't really care about that because your charter says World A to World D. And if World D becomes an awakened tomb world, then you and all of your family and until you're out of ancestors will continue to fly your ships to that Necron tomb world.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know, maybe you get lucky.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe, you know, tracing the infinite will decide to trade with you instead of blowing you out of the sky.
[SPEAKER_02]: In my mind, I do have, like you usually, you get a lot of people killed, but occasionally the macrones just go.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right, what's actually in the ship?
[SPEAKER_00]: Man, this is crazy that you're doing this.
[SPEAKER_00]: So screw it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just check that.
[SPEAKER_00]: At the fiftieth ship, I showed up.
[SPEAKER_00]: They belong to the sky.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, all right, fine, like how much?
[SPEAKER_00]: They're just throwing up.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're like, do you take whatever currency we invented, sixty five million years ago?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is this still working?
[SPEAKER_00]: Is this a gold de blue?
[SPEAKER_00]: Can we use those?
[SPEAKER_00]: They just get so confused that they might just go, all right, just works.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fine, like you know, if it's just this feels mean at this point.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's the heredity charter.
[SPEAKER_00]: The next tear up from them is the ultimate.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is basically the best you're going to do outside of being a rogue trader.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is the heredity free charter.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now the heredity free charter is very rare.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is only given to people who operate large fleets themselves.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's a very powerful family that usually have had to use the wealth they've gained to get influence all the way back to the lords of terror to get this type of thing.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I have the best analogy for this.
[SPEAKER_02]: I actually think this is like the spice traders for doom.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is one of the major houses, and this is a hereditary free charter.
[SPEAKER_02]: When you get this, you are unbelievably wealthy.
[SPEAKER_02]: You have a lot of power because they don't give these to up and coming merchant, you know, this crappy.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, no.
[SPEAKER_02]: You have to have
[SPEAKER_02]: They have small, I can't even say small.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have military fleets of their own to protect the fleets.
[SPEAKER_02]: These are given to powerful houses that can take care of themselves and are given just like the spice and tune, a very important role of transporting things.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's a great analogy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so one of the key difference I'm going to point out between the heredity free charter and the heredity charter.
[SPEAKER_00]: As the Heredity Charter is linked to a trade route.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Heredity Free Charter, you still end up linked to a trade route, but you bid on it and they can change.
[SPEAKER_00]: In the example I used before, where one of the worlds are going to became a Necron Tombworld, everyone with a Heredity Charter would die.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're already free charter.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be able to say, yeah, I'm not going there anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they could then bid for other routes.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they could then get them.
[SPEAKER_00]: And therefore, these are the bread's point.
[SPEAKER_00]: These become floatillus.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we are talking massive British East Indian tea company.
[SPEAKER_00]: That would have been a heredity free charter.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think you're going for more like the Koreans floating around with their float till that.
[SPEAKER_02]: No, but the flarrings don't do trade.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's not doing the wedge.
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't, not really.
[SPEAKER_02]: You will accept the Koreans are awesome and Tally's the best companion you can have.
[SPEAKER_00]: We both know that's not true.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like we both.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever, you're probably favorites, Jacob.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just play the whole game.
[SPEAKER_00]: Jacob or Dye, you got to roll Jacob.
[SPEAKER_00]: No, that doesn't everyone use the sniper and the big angry reptile.
[SPEAKER_00]: Big angry reptile.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's Rex, but I just love the big angry reptile.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And did anything I say make you not think of her?
[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's curious of Rex.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I describe Garrison Rex perfectly.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at me go.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: But let's talk about the merchant fleet experience though.
[SPEAKER_00]: As we talked about before, the merchant fleet functions in a lot of ways, the way intercontinental trade in the Earth happened in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.
[SPEAKER_00]: GW needed a good influence and it was just sitting there.
[SPEAKER_00]: So as colonies are built up around the globe,
[SPEAKER_00]: trade exploded.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is an honor.
[SPEAKER_00]: The main thing about that as this trade exploded for a lot of the citizenry, a lot more money is made unmoving of the goods around the globe than there was actually creating the goods back at home.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you start getting this massive independent merchant fleets are popping up all around the world.
[SPEAKER_02]: We have to go for a little bit of why, though, because in Forty-K, the Imperium has made certain worlds, and we've talked about this previous cast, widely more than any other civilization or even race.
[SPEAKER_02]: We've made certain planets completely not viable unless an Imperium exists around it.
[SPEAKER_02]: We have planets that don't provide any food or they have no food or water on the planet.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's just a
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's clearly.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like the Baron wasteland behind your facts.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
[SPEAKER_02]: And we have to have these planets supplied with food and water and everything else.
[SPEAKER_02]: And also we have.
[SPEAKER_02]: A ton of these other planets that not only do they not have that, they also don't have the raw materials anymore.
[SPEAKER_02]: So they get sent all of rock A. They get sent all the unobtaining.
[SPEAKER_02]: They can possibly do.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's because their planet only makes tanks, guns, whatever.
[SPEAKER_02]: So like we have to have these merchants moving things from point A to point P, because we've isolated these planets of you only do this.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now,
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's kind of actually, but Nana's efficient for a war economy.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's terribly inefficient for anything else because you want to just have these guys put out last gun rifles.
[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever they're making, you get them here and you just straight them go.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think a cool thing about this, the merchant fleet is made up largely of volunteers.
[SPEAKER_00]: In fact, almost exclusively of volunteers who want to take part in this trade, Brad was just talking about in order to keep the imperium alive because they can make a lot of money.
[SPEAKER_00]: But there isn't that much money in it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when I, the reason I bring that up is these merchant fleets, what makes them so lucrative, what makes it such a a way to make money is you don't have navigators.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't have astropath.
[SPEAKER_00]: You barely have gather fields like not strong ones.
[SPEAKER_02]: So it depends on the size.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're talking that her ready to say, some of those just have elevator houses, hitch to them, ninety, ninety, eight percent, ninety, nine percent, do not know.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's like this is all right.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now you have giant business.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_02]: We have, but the majority are, and this is one of one of the reasons why I think that we talked about the fortresses in excitement.
[SPEAKER_02]: Why those people are so powerful is they have all this information that might not even make its way back to Tara in the Lord's of Jordan, Tara in this.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's these guys have such a huge position because they're in charge of all of this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so the life on these ships, that's why I wanted to talk about is interesting to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because what you have is these fleets are jumping across the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Even the free charter guys, they're sitting there trying to get as much trade as they can in a lifetime.
[SPEAKER_00]: But some of these trips can take a while because you're doing blind hops.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it could be a six week journey.
[SPEAKER_00]: It could be a two year journey to bring this stuff across and not just like two years hanging out safely traveling.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's two years of ducking pirates doing work jumps, readjusting yourself, all of these things.
[SPEAKER_02]: For John's point on this, it's such a big deal because what the appearing does is, hey, I need to send whatever to plan a D. Well, I know that these workshops are some ships are going to not make it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Shamships are going to take too long.
[SPEAKER_02]: So the appearing just loads up a bunch of ships every week, every day, every couple months, and they just sling a whole bunch of them at there and some of the stick.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then we keep going, and that's actually kind of, there's a, I mean, some of that's crazy too, where you might be at a port city, you and the ship next to you, you're drinking at the bar, and you're both getting loaded with the same supplies to go to the same place, and you might get there four years before they do.
[SPEAKER_00]: Three years after they do, or they may never arrive, and you just know that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the odds of the two of you leaving at the same time, transient of the work at the same time, and arriving at the same time, is not existing.
[SPEAKER_02]: It has to be one of my favorite, just Brad, can't believe it.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, a ton of stories for this is you get sent with war gear.
[SPEAKER_02]: You need to get here with the resources to fight this.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then you get lost in the warp and you show up and they're like, hey, man, that's was done for a couple hundred years now.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, exactly.
[SPEAKER_02]: Also, why do you have this?
[SPEAKER_02]: We haven't needed any of this for forever.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is vital for the war, you like, that handed like a long time ago.
[SPEAKER_00]: So one of the things that's cool about this is that as these ships come into port and move to the next spot, they pick up these shiphands and the shiphands are there to do a number of different things.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes it's just a person who just hates the world they're on and wants to go to another one.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they're effectively hitchhiking across the galaxy, but they're working in order to get there.
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, hitchhikers got to the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe the best sci-fi book ever written.
[SPEAKER_00]: What happens though is that over time some end up joining the ships and never leaving.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whens of happening is that this creates almost a new civilization that lives amongst the stars.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't live on planets.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they be over time or called the void boring.
[SPEAKER_02]: These are really interesting to me because they start to get highly specialized.
[SPEAKER_02]: You saw a little bit of it in the expanse with the belters.
[SPEAKER_02]: By the way, if you haven't seen the expanse, go get that fantastic.
[SPEAKER_02]: Also, the books are good too.
[SPEAKER_02]: But in Forty Kay,
[SPEAKER_02]: The Voidborn become wildly specialized and also highly adept at what they're supposed to be doing.
[SPEAKER_02]: A lot of these won't let's go farther into this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about the Voidborn.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the Voidborn are really cool because they do appear in novels and game and games a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Since I always spend some time talking about them to cut of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: to answer some questions people have like what is a void point.
[SPEAKER_00]: So a void board is not just someone who's born on a spaceship.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's how happens.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we're doing multi-year journeys.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're gonna have sex and have to make kids.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's going to happen.
[SPEAKER_00]: The void is a culture of, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why you terms civilization.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the voidborne are their own many civilization within the Imperium because the voidborne are only live in space.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll touch down on a planet for short period of time.
[SPEAKER_00]: The thing about the voidborne being born generation in generation in space, according to GW, this is enough time for them to actually evolve to be more space-faring.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now GW admits it's because of radiation and exposure to warp,
[SPEAKER_00]: because you don't evolve in like a thousand years, guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: But whatever, what makes them interesting about that is that they're also somewhat abhuman because they look like a being that only lives in the space.
[SPEAKER_02]: So the void point are thinner, they're gone.
[SPEAKER_02]: They also are heavily but well they're mutated, but they're also heavily augmented for whatever it is that they do on the ship.
[SPEAKER_02]: So you see actually different levels of the ship.
[SPEAKER_02]: They do a great job of this and road trader the game and they have a lot of
[SPEAKER_02]: short stories about this in travel in the acquisition books, which is you have these very tall, very gaunt, but very heavily augmented to, and you can tell, like how a couple of the books talk about the inquisitors, meeting some of these voidborn, and instantly know that they are from this particular section of the ship, because they have the augments to work on this part of the ship.
[SPEAKER_02]: And they are also, I have to give you, then credit, this is pretty cool.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have their families are on these same ships for thousands of years sometimes and they have heavily modified the ship also because they have to make this thing work through generation and generation and generation.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is what makes the void born so interesting, because they're both shunned and embraced by the Imperium.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is basically where do you live?
[SPEAKER_00]: If you live on a planet, you don't like the void born, because the Brad's point, they're odd-looking.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they also think to be sure to mention, they also don't like being on planet.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are people who live their entire lives, living in bulkheads of spaceships.
[SPEAKER_00]: Suddenly standing a planet aside from the gravity starts crushing their bones immediately.
[SPEAKER_00]: They also are terrifying.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh god.
[SPEAKER_00]: Excuse me, I'm claustrophobic.
[SPEAKER_00]: You put me in a small confined space.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't really like it.
[SPEAKER_00]: These people are the inverse.
[SPEAKER_00]: They've only been to small confined space.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then you put them somewhere where the sky never ends and they just freak out.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it also means a lot of times what I like about this is that their interactions with people on planets are largely negative because they're freaked out at the time.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're basically having a panic attack and are incredible amounts of pain.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody talk to anybody.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they get along very well.
[SPEAKER_00]: However, the Imperial Navy and anyone who works in orbit loves the Voidborn because, to Brad's point, they are masters of this technology.
[SPEAKER_00]: And a family, for example,
[SPEAKER_00]: within a much like within a hive, or most of the imperium, where your born is where you will die, unless you join the guard.
[SPEAKER_00]: The void born, yeah, the void born, what they do, is they're going to be born, let's say near the engine compartment, for example.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they and their entire family will work on that engine.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's all they ever done for generations.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are better at work on that engine than anyone.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's even stories of the ad-Mac coming down into the bowels of ships to meet with the Voidborn to learn how some of the technology works because the ad-Mac have a schematic for an engine.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then they look at said engine and say, that's not the schematic anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's because it's been modified over the years by the void point.
[SPEAKER_00]: The void point pushed the mechanical in their knowledge.
[SPEAKER_02]: And the thing is that a lot of times these ships are thousands of years old and they've been in constant.
[SPEAKER_02]: active duty, especially on a lot of these military.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, on the military ships, a hundred percent, but the one, a lot of these, maybe the road trader ships and some of these larger hereditary ships and stuff like that, you've been doing these routes for since, hey, when it was the ship,
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's still in operation right now.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it's still running and you go, hey, let's get it.
[SPEAKER_02]: I've got the schematics for the ship and you go, this doesn't look like anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is why in games, if you are a void borne.
[SPEAKER_00]: It actually gives you a bonus to your ship's performance because the thing with the voidborne is this knowledge they have is tends to also just be space ship knowledge because the voidborne don't just serve in the bowels of a merchant vessel or even the bowels of a naval vessel they will become naval commanders
[SPEAKER_00]: they will become breachers, they will take on numerous roles, you know, some of them may become road traders with time.
[SPEAKER_00]: They can get a lot of power and what they are masters of space because it's all that they know.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're masters of ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get some cool stories where like you'd have something going wrong on a ship, but luckily a random guy in the ship is void born and just kind of runs over and fixes it while the imperial mechanics are struggling.
[SPEAKER_02]: And they're fantastic for especially again in the dark space, you know, dark future.
[SPEAKER_02]: There is only war.
[SPEAKER_02]: These guys are great for combat.
[SPEAKER_02]: Fixed.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_02]: They're just like, yeah, whatever, man.
[SPEAKER_02]: We, my whole family's been for the last couple, a hundred thousand, seven years, whatever.
[SPEAKER_02]: We are all a void born.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, of course we fix this stuff because we had to know how to fix it because everybody dies if you don't.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I love some of the stories about the void born are great because they just assume that other people have this balance.
[SPEAKER_02]: So they're like, of course you do this.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I like, nobody knew this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but let's take up because from the void borne, let's go into the Imperial Navy.
[SPEAKER_00]: If it gets a good chance to the lot of the void borne are also part of this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the Imperial Navy, the final thing about this is in the scheme of ships that make up all of the Imperium, the merchant makes up about ninety to ninety two percent of all ships are out of the merchant fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: But five percent of that overall hundred percent is made up by the Imperial Navy.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Imperial Navy is three to ten times the size of the Imperial Guard.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is the largest force that the Imperial has by a wide margin is the Imperial.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about a little bit of why, though, because the casualty rate for one is wildly lower, because yes, we lose ships, yes, we have space battles.
[SPEAKER_02]: But the Imperial general, the motives of operandas is
[SPEAKER_02]: shove Imperial guardsmen into a wood shipper until it jams the wood shipper.
[SPEAKER_02]: You don't do that with ships because well, ships cost money arrows.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's also sick.
[SPEAKER_00]: The last gun and the quote unquote flag armor.
[SPEAKER_00]: Very heavy quote unquote on the armor word there don't cost very much and the person costs even less.
[SPEAKER_00]: the ship's expensive.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we could wage naval combat where we could keep the ship and lose all the crew.
[SPEAKER_00]: They do that all day every day.
[SPEAKER_00]: But they can start firing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they will be thinking of his bullets.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were good.
[SPEAKER_00]: But we'll keep this going.
[SPEAKER_00]: So as a result, the Imperial Navy is a lot larger.
[SPEAKER_00]: And also, you know, the ships are a lot bigger too.
[SPEAKER_00]: They have to carry a lot more stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: But before we do that, I want to talk a bit more about some of the structure of the Imperial Navy, because it's, again, it's broke up into segments in the galaxy.
[SPEAKER_00]: So each segmentum has its own Lord Hayano.
[SPEAKER_00]: Each High Lord Commander commands their battle fleet, which has made up of a hundred vessels.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes, the gastroids.
[SPEAKER_00]: Brad Brad's correct.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a big gastroids here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see, a hundred vessels.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's a hundred vessels of note.
[SPEAKER_00]: It doesn't include all the small little guys on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's with a hundred battleships, cruises, and frigates.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's what they have.
[SPEAKER_00]: And some places there can actually be more than that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And within this structure,
[SPEAKER_00]: their job is to keep their segmentum safe with that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So less than fifty percent of their battle fleet is around the fortress at the rest of its out on patrol, depending on what the segmentum is and what the region is, the size that patrol will vary.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is because they're responsible for pirates, they're responsible for small enemy incursions.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of this, it has to get handled, it has to get handled quick.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you allow pirates to kind of get a hold of a system, then you're got to require a lot more.
[SPEAKER_00]: muscle will deal with them later.
[SPEAKER_02]: So they're supposed to knit these in the bud because if you have to radio out, I love that I'm going radio for this.
[SPEAKER_02]: If you have to radio out that you need some help with the larger, the bigger guys in charge are annoyed that they have to stop pushing the crusade for, to unify the galaxy and come back to deal with the thing that you need help with.
[SPEAKER_00]: And this is a big deal on that.
[SPEAKER_00]: And let's talk about the two biggest ones you're going to have here.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to be orcs and true card.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I don't want to break this down a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: People are saying why these exploratory leads matter.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you've got a small orc incursion occurring and you just slap it down hard.
[SPEAKER_00]: Then it doesn't draw other works, the battle because the battle is over.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's no problems anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the same with true curry.
[SPEAKER_00]: If true curry rate in area and they don't get a lot of resistance, they'll hit harder and harder each time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And when you finally do want to go deal with them, you may find yourself with a much larger rating force than the small little encouraging.
[SPEAKER_02]: It might be a couple of leaning multiple other couples and come in sandwiched.
[SPEAKER_02]: But if you make it difficult, they just look for somewhere else.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't bother.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the flip side though is you also might encounter an awakening to a world or find you hit town space.
[SPEAKER_00]: But or something like, you know, when you do hit like an elder craft world in those scenarios, you're going to smoke no matter what.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't want to have a large force.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cause imagine if you have a larger battle group that all of a sudden finds itself above what's the storm lords that run to.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, he's attack.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So yeah, if it's all of a sudden, you said there is a saw attack.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're done.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's something where you need to go bring a full crusade into.
[SPEAKER_00]: You don't want to lose a bunch of ships just because you made a wrong turn at Albuquerque, which doesn't hold reference for Brad.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: Thanks, bugs.
[SPEAKER_00]: Sure.
[SPEAKER_00]: Turn left.
[SPEAKER_00]: So that's why these patrols are so important.
[SPEAKER_00]: But they also have to do other tasks escort duty.
[SPEAKER_00]: So when the ad make exploratory fleets go out, I mean the ad make make them their ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the deal ad make it has is we will make you all the battleships.
[SPEAKER_00]: But when our exploratory ships got looking for STCs in which case by the way, they always cause problems when they do that.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's the job of the Imperial Navy to escort them and make sure that they get their STCs back home safe.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about one of the others when an important person has to go from point A to point B. They have to be escorted, but also they have the time.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's about fifty percent other things and fifty percent.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah, the Lord's a tarot terrible.
[SPEAKER_02]: So they're probably trying to kill some of the rivals because they left their fortified base for eight seconds.
[SPEAKER_00]: Another big piece in here on the AV has to do is actually escort their own craft, their new craft.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, forage world, for example, as we said earlier, it's going to build a battleship.
[SPEAKER_00]: But a forage world is primarily housed with the, that is mechanical.
[SPEAKER_00]: that they don't have a million troops just sitting around waiting to go on in.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they have to then collect it and then bring it back to the fortress where at the fortress it'll get staffed with people.
[SPEAKER_00]: The problem obviously is that, you know, they don't have enough crew on it to fire the guns or do all that stuff.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have big Earl and his five is barbershop quartet trying to get the ship from point A to point B. Not a lot of people are ready to stab these.
[SPEAKER_02]: The population of some of these giant vessels is crazy to make these things very much.
[SPEAKER_00]: So very, very much.
[SPEAKER_00]: But what I will say is from that though, I do want to have some fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's transition to be just talk about a pair of war vessels into the Imperial Navy at war because
[SPEAKER_00]: I find this part, and again, it's because I've enjoyed battles with Gothic a lot, but also they have this within the trader and a bunch of other ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a super fun thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: So let's talk about, let me how he's out quick and talk about.
[SPEAKER_01]: The Ethereum and its theatres of war will be right back after a quick break.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so the Ethereum has two styles of engagement.
[SPEAKER_00]: Style one is space to space combat, style two is space to surface combat.
[SPEAKER_00]: One of them is very easy to cover and talk about put ship in orbit fire guns with gravity at thing, not complicated.
[SPEAKER_00]: The bigger one, though, is the ship to ship combat.
[SPEAKER_00]: And for those of you by the way who play the game and wondering why I'm so into this, check out Battlefleet Gothic.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really cool turn based style and it covers as well.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about the equipment on these ships here.
[SPEAKER_00]: See which and how grand a scale this combat is.
[SPEAKER_00]: And we'll start with defense.
[SPEAKER_00]: The first one is what's called.
[SPEAKER_00]: These actually also come up on the table.
[SPEAKER_00]: Top a little bit void shields.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to want to void shields.
[SPEAKER_02]: Can we do the void shields?
[SPEAKER_02]: But I really want to talk about it.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, let me jump in after that.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I'm all excited.
[SPEAKER_02]: John's holding me back.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's basically doing the big brother with a little brother.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's got my hand.
[SPEAKER_02]: His hand on my hand.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because I want to talk about how big stuff is.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, Brad likes the offense.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like the offense.
[SPEAKER_00]: It actually is why we work well, although not when I play the game because I just run my looks forward.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tizzy, I have strategy.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was just about to say that.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I thought they're just just orcs go that way.
[SPEAKER_00]: Anyway, what's what's my deployments zone?
[SPEAKER_00]: What's my opponents deployment zone?
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going that way.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the first thing I talk about is avoid shield.
[SPEAKER_00]: Avoid shield is the force field of forty.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but
[SPEAKER_00]: They explain how it works.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a gallery field in reverse.
[SPEAKER_00]: Whereas a gallery field projects bubble of material around the ship and including the ship itself, a void shield, projects a layer of immaterial all around the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that way, when something from the material, like a shell or a last cannon blast or whatever, interacts with it, like a matter antimatter, it explodes.
[SPEAKER_00]: deflects the blow.
[SPEAKER_00]: The thing I like about them a lot is that they require constant energy to keep in place.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the more of these impacts interactions happen, the more energy gets pulled.
[SPEAKER_02]: I love that you're like constant energy, like you need like a that diesel generator you got.
[SPEAKER_02]: Now, these are massive amounts of power because as we'll go into the offense of this, people are shooting some big stuff at each other to make these void shields powered.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have
[SPEAKER_02]: huge amounts of power consumption that are gone.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's incredible reactors, but the reason I like it this way is that one cool thing about the void shields, it gets us to where we're going to next is that a void shield doesn't actually fail.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's more like a breaker trips.
[SPEAKER_00]: You put enough energy into it and eventually the breaker trips and the void shield turns off.
[SPEAKER_00]: At which point you can reset the breaker and the void shield will come back on.
[SPEAKER_00]: But there's a period of time between those two things, and that period of time horrible things can happen.
[SPEAKER_00]: One other note about void shields, though, is that void shields have varying levels of power, and you could actually find yourselves in a little bit of an issue with them.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you turn the void shield up to an eleven,
[SPEAKER_00]: The problem you have is that the immaturium around your ship becomes so dense and thick that you can no longer use Vox communication and ship to ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: This would usually only happen with a battleship or something at that size, could find itself actually silenced in battle if it wanted to bring its defenses all the way up.
[SPEAKER_00]: which is a cool and there's some stories of this happened to it creates weird dichotomy for a captain where he's now got a fly and fight a lot effectively blind because he's surrounded himself in a tear him he can shoot out of it but that's about it the next piece down in this is of course how all the ships are constructed and they're constructed of two materials one of them is the plastic and that's just the
[SPEAKER_00]: Forty-K version of metal.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is your basic structure, but they're also covered in a layer of Wolverine.
[SPEAKER_02]: Whoa, whoa, you're saying, Lair, don't say it like they're gold plating things.
[SPEAKER_02]: These are meters, sticks at a Antium on ships that are kilometers long.
[SPEAKER_00]: These guys went in and got all of the different versions of Wolverine, which if you haven't seen the latest Deadpool, you're missing out.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then melt to them all down and then coat it their ships in them.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Adam Antium of his course, of course, the bigger the ship, the more the Adam Antium.
[SPEAKER_00]: The thing about this that was GW does do a kind of a clever thing here in the writing.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't just say, well, these ships are covered in dense armor because you can still crack armor.
[SPEAKER_00]: They added something else and it's called a field brisk.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love
[SPEAKER_00]: I love the field grace.
[SPEAKER_02]: This is so cool because, okay, the, the period is not the highest level of tech in the Forty-K world.
[SPEAKER_02]: However, we build the biggest stuff.
[SPEAKER_02]: And when we build, we redundancy everything.
[SPEAKER_02]: And I love this and with the field braces, because you have layers upon layers of fortifications, but
[SPEAKER_02]: structural force fields, you have these ships that can just go into it, but I love it in the example of when you see it, especially in the games of the writing, the ships that are almost completely in half that are fully functional, still fighting in a battle.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and that's what it feels braced us.
[SPEAKER_00]: The field brace is a energy weave that goes throughout the entire hull of the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: So should the ship get hit with something that could crack it and put a seam through it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Remember, you are in outer space.
[SPEAKER_00]: There is inverse of gravity.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if the inside of a ship is pressurized and it crack appears, the ship will actually explode afterwards.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's how the laws of physics work.
[SPEAKER_00]: What the field braces do, as even if that crack is there, it forces the pieces back together and holds them there, which allows the ship to almost bend with impact, should the void shields be down.
[SPEAKER_00]: This also is called later with about Nova Cadence, and helping the ship fire some of the biggest guns, but the field braces are really cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: So your void shield goes down, but the breakers trip, you go to reset the breaker,
[SPEAKER_00]: As the void shields are coming up, you're going to be taken.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're about to talk about some of the guns.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to take some hits.
[SPEAKER_00]: And those hits are going to be centralized to crack your hull.
[SPEAKER_00]: But even if you're whole cracks, the field braces may allow at the state intact.
[SPEAKER_00]: So then when your void shields come back up, you're still as able to fight in maneuver, maybe a little bit slower as you were before.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I've held Brad back long enough.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's talk about guns.
[SPEAKER_00]: Boom, boom, big guns.
[SPEAKER_02]: They have, I love my Imperium ships, but while my elders ships are sleek and look cool, and they probably make more sense.
[SPEAKER_02]: The Imperium packs more guns for square inch than anyone else in the game.
[SPEAKER_00]: the gun and fifth element is basically helping period makes every guess.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's how this has to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's amazing.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll start off with the biggest, was actually not the biggest, it's still the biggest.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's the side batteries.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the side batteries use something called macro cannons because GW for under a time restriction to write them down really quickly.
[SPEAKER_00]: They say, hey, what's a big gun?
[SPEAKER_00]: Macro.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a macro.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now that that's what we have.
[SPEAKER_00]: We have macro cannons.
[SPEAKER_00]: These, I like these side cannons.
[SPEAKER_00]: They do vary a little bit, but effectively it's the same gun they used for orbital bombardment.
[SPEAKER_00]: They use for ship to ship bombardment.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a man of war's battleships, all the stuff from the, you know, like in the British Navy, or any one's Navy in the the seventeenth, nineteenth century, bring the ship alongside.
[SPEAKER_00]: put up to stick everyone out of every hole.
[SPEAKER_00]: Fire all of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Some of it's going to hit and when it does, it's going to suck.
[SPEAKER_02]: Because these things all ordinance their firing is bananas.
[SPEAKER_02]: It is so crazy on this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, and they've got you because they've got me and it is just like, you know, you expect they have a varying level difference of shells.
[SPEAKER_00]: I can put in there depending on the opposition.
[SPEAKER_00]: It can be void weapons, plasma, melta, whatever we're dealing with.
[SPEAKER_00]: For example, tyrannids don't have void shields.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you don't need to fire and tie void weapons at terrains.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have to hire fire things that melt organic material.
[SPEAKER_00]: But Necrons have their own style of force.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the ordinance can be changed out obviously, but the main goal of the side batteries to pull up alongside.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the problem with that, though, is when you pull up alongside something, it also has guns all along the side of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: If it's their burial vessels.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you've got a little bit of a challenge in how you want to use them, which leads to the imperium and most using little small little smaller craft that are designed to go quick so you can never get along side of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they stay in better areas.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they just kind of heck at you with their
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, they're trying to put down a lot of your weaponry.
[SPEAKER_02]: Although they're trying to put a lot of times they focus on your weaponry on certain parts of the ship.
[SPEAKER_02]: Effective with creating blind spots.
[SPEAKER_02]: And to deal with this, they have three, sixteen mounted laser weapons.
[SPEAKER_00]: And these are called a lance battery.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is the lance battery that you'll see on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is the interesting degree mounted.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it is designed to do two things.
[SPEAKER_00]: One screw up small craft.
[SPEAKER_00]: But also, it can be used to what Brad was describing really well, kind of pinpoint certain parts of enemy vessel, maybe take out their engines, take out, you know, a communications tower.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's going to, because it's much more like with these side batteries, are just almost blind fire.
[SPEAKER_00]: You just get along close, fire them all, what hits hits, and what misses sucks to be somewhere else in the galaxy, whenever it gets there.
[SPEAKER_00]: But these ones are designed for their shields or low enough, we can get through them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's pick out them.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the Lance batteries will up, but Lance batteries are for little pupi.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let's talk about with your mouth a gun to the prowess ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that go, well, how big's the gun?
[SPEAKER_00]: This weapon is over two hundred meters long.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it's two non-American football fields to an American.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is two Costco's.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, but as I say, I love you when you go past it.
[SPEAKER_00]: These cannons are galskans.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, and they fire a warhead that can be fifty meters wide, which for an American that's two basketball courts.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
[SPEAKER_00]: It's, which, by the way, when you read that, you go, yeah, no one needs no one shoots anything that big.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, that, that would probably do enough damage to a planet, let alone for ship the ship, but I think that's ridiculous on that because the dawn have a dawn brought
[SPEAKER_02]: his original planet killers out and that's what they were just forward shooting.
[SPEAKER_02]: But one of the biggest things of this I see three for one is that when you mount something gigantic that you have to go hey if we push a ton of force back.
[SPEAKER_02]: We probably need to force forward.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is actually one of my favorite things because every now and then GW does I can tell sometimes there's someone right in the rules who has a degree in physics and I can tell when I read the rules.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is one of the good ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: They've realized there's a recoil every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
[SPEAKER_00]: The use of the Nova Cannon causes two big problems.
[SPEAKER_00]: First is the vibration, and second is the counterforce.
[SPEAKER_00]: And for this reason, the Nova Cannon's can only be mounted on battleship or higher vessels.
[SPEAKER_00]: We should mention also that the Nova Cannon can crack a cruiser with one shot with the devoid shields up.
[SPEAKER_00]: It'll go right through the void shields and blow the cruiser in half.
[SPEAKER_00]: So these things can sit at the back of the battle and just pick off enemy craft.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, the reason it has to be on a battleship is, well, as we talked about earlier, the field braces.
[SPEAKER_00]: This requires a level of field braces that are so powerful that only a battleship would have them because as this gun fires, it's going to effectively shake the entire ship and it would actually shake the ship apart if you didn't have a strong enough field braces.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the funnier one is firing this projectile.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's two basketball courts wide out the front.
[SPEAKER_00]: Makes the ship want to go in the other direction.
[SPEAKER_00]: And if you put this on something, you could actually fire the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it wouldn't be a light year, but it might be a couple miles backwards where there might be other ships in the way.
[SPEAKER_00]: So instead, in order to fire the Nova cannons, you have to take your battleship and turn it to full forward force so that when you fire, the ship doesn't shoot backwards.
[SPEAKER_00]: The other part I love about these is that the Nova canons, how messed up this weapon is, was never used until the Horus heresy.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was actually Petarabo, who was when he was chasing Corax, fired at an A even Corax, went, what the hell was that?
[SPEAKER_00]: Because he missed, because it's Petarabo, because of course he missed.
[SPEAKER_00]: And after the show went past, Corex went, what the hell was that?
[SPEAKER_00]: And it was after that moment that the loyalists, the traders began using them, and they're still used to this day.
[SPEAKER_02]: This has caused a lot of collateral, because you miss and you're like, oh, something behind me is going to be getting ruined.
[SPEAKER_00]: it is it's space so it's got to get slowed down by gravity or if it doesn't it might just slam into a planet and then they have a dinosaur extinction event.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then the most used torpedoes.
[SPEAKER_02]: So each side, each all actually factions in Forty Kay have different torpedo types between Plasma Void, Melta, they've got space wall space wall.
[SPEAKER_00]: We've got everything from boarding to damaging.
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I like this a lot because they have tons of different.
[SPEAKER_02]: And this is the catch all torpedoes are a lot of the things that they use in the stories to do something specific for us.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a concept of the torpedoes to independent projectile.
[SPEAKER_00]: But in the forty-k universe, they have void torpedoes, plasma torpedoes.
[SPEAKER_00]: They've got all those ones, but they also have hollow ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they're primarily used to either board a ship or put something on a ship that the ship doesn't want on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: In my favorite example of this with the boarding torpedoes is they're used by all different groups.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if you watch the very first studies video ever made, that's a boarding torpedo, where they come in, they go to the ship and the Space Marines pop out and begin fighting.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's been a few animations around this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know why I love these animations.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've guys just riding a ship and doing other ship and then jumping out and blasting their way through.
[SPEAKER_00]: What they'll do is once they're inside because this is a cool way to get a ship out.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're thinking about a cruiser or a battleship style vessel.
[SPEAKER_00]: You want to do one of two things in combat.
[SPEAKER_00]: You want to blow it up or take it over.
[SPEAKER_00]: And trying to fire through all the armor to blow it up is actually pretty hard to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the best thing to do is actually just get onto the ship and go to the reactor and flip the overload switch and jump out.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if it's not that scenario, you want to capture the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's say it's a blackstone fortress, for example.
[SPEAKER_00]: you can't just shoot at it and expect that the but the chaos marines inside will say fair enough guys we surrender go ahead and have to ship yeah no they're gonna crash into cadia so maybe next time instead of doing that board the ship and stab abadon and this is
[SPEAKER_02]: This is such a cool thing though for the games in the lore though, because of the fact that this is where you get these heroic boarding parties by the Marines that come in and just fight against all odds and fight their way all the way to the bridge and or blow the ship up.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's funny because the Marines go to the bridge more often and like naval breachers and stuff almost always go somewhere to put explosives leaf.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're just going to blow this thing up.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're good guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: This thing's, like, I don't, but this ship's full of space marines.
[SPEAKER_00]: I wasn't going to go well for me or chaos cultists.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'd say we'd blow it up.
[SPEAKER_00]: That actually makes more sense.
[SPEAKER_00]: From there, though, let's talk really quickly about some of the ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, the goal here is if you want to know more about this by the way, guys, I said before you can download the PDF of the Imperial Fleet Gothic rules.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one of years old now.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're not really stealing anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: As I think there's so much lore in there, but what I do want to do is I'm the goal of this cast was to kind of give people some interest, and they don't know a lot about, but also for people who play the game and read the novels to know when they say something what it is.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because I know when I read the books, a lot of them go Google stuff, where it's like, wait, this is a frigate, or this is a Corsair, like, what is this?
[SPEAKER_00]: So real quickly, I just want to kind of run through some of these, explain what they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the largest obviously are the phalanx, those ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: So skipping them, things that are actually produced.
[SPEAKER_00]: The largest is the battleship class.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the class has goes down in size, all the way from the apocalypse, down to the graya and the adjudicators.
[SPEAKER_00]: Those are names of ships, those are sizes of ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: These things are huge, so eight kilometers long, so which is about the distance.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one and a half times the distance that someone goes for a run and it tells you about and you have to pretend you're impressed.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, you know what I am impressed about is the cruise size we were talking about for some of these are in the millions.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, you can have other battleships can be upwards of three million people who's sitting on them, that these are, they create their own gravity, this size, these are incredible.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there were not very many of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Every segment only has a few of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: However, the return of Gilman has shifted that a little bit.
[SPEAKER_00]: Gilman and Carl are now overdriving the admec and they're realizing that they need, especially after the fall of Cadia.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cadia would not have fallen, had the Imperium had more battleships, able to handle some like a blackstone fortress coming in.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was only because the Blackstone fortress was so large and only the failanks got there in time, but they needed more firepower.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is shifting, but for now, the battleships are very rare.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so in battle, what they do is they tend to keep the battleships a bit further back so that it can then deploy.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's no of a cannon and all those things.
[SPEAKER_00]: And just rip apart an enemy fleet.
[SPEAKER_02]: But what are the things you go to the next sizes?
[SPEAKER_02]: Because battleships can't be deployed solo.
[SPEAKER_02]: They need all their auxiliary escort ships to handle all of the nonsense because while they're possibly powerful in huge, you could just stick and move them for a long time.
[SPEAKER_00]: If they're so slow, they are so slow.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, and this is, it's just like we do today in modern era, we have carrier groups, not battleships anymore.
[SPEAKER_00]: Syncomps is a concept as a carrier group.
[SPEAKER_00]: The aircraft carrier itself can level a sea, but a bunch of small little BS crafts that kind of pain the ass for the carrier to handle it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you have to bring down the next class.
[SPEAKER_00]: The next class down is called the cruisers.
[SPEAKER_00]: which is actually four different classes.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have grand cruisers, battle cruisers, heavy cruisers, and light cruisers.
[SPEAKER_00]: The cruisers used to make up about eighty percent of the imperial naval fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like I said, that's diminishing now because there's more of a focus on battleships.
[SPEAKER_00]: They were so common because the cruiser is the rhino tank of the imperial navy.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's one basic chassis that they just tweak a little bit and add some extra crap to.
[SPEAKER_02]: And everybody had, I mean, this is actually an STC.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's right.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is an STC.
[SPEAKER_00]: The core of the cruisers in STC and they make fast maneuverable firing platforms.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are the kind that would, you know, you've deployed against other cruisers or against battleship to kind of maybe go after their engine compartments.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they stay out of range of their big guns.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'd have heavy platforms that would actually, you know, they couldn't handle a battleship.
[SPEAKER_00]: They could blow up other cruisers really easily.
[SPEAKER_00]: They also have what they're just stripped troop transports.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, hey, we, you know, we have to get the Imperial Guardic into conflict.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're at the land of this ship on a planet that's going to be firing orbital cannons at us.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just, you know, load it up and more of the group, though, interestingly enough.
[SPEAKER_00]: The light cruiser is the most produced, which is the smallest.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's all basic chassis, but they put the least amount of crap on it.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a dauntalist, the endeavors fall into this, and they're called a scout class.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's because what they do is they tend to this scout out at the front of the formation, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut, to cut,
[SPEAKER_02]: crap for weapons, but they actually have fairly decent defenses besides being super fast if you read about them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, they're fast with good voids shields and good, you know, anti torpedo technology, all that stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the goal of them is to bits of harass a little bit and then things like, you know, the Armageddon and Mars pattern grand cruisers then are behind pouring themselves in position to then wreck the enemy force.
[SPEAKER_02]: which I love these because these are exactly the opposite.
[SPEAKER_02]: Where you're like, how are your fortifications?
[SPEAKER_02]: Man, but I have a truckload of guns.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I also just wanted to point something out.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Imperial Navy's tactics are so much better than the Imperial Guard tactics.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like, it's the same difference.
[SPEAKER_00]: First of the Imperial Guard of, hey, how many more regiments do we have?
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, fifty.
[SPEAKER_00]: Uh, next one up.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's see what happens.
[SPEAKER_00]: Beyond the cruisers, though, there is one more class down which is the frigate.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now the frigate class, these are destroyers, core vets.
[SPEAKER_00]: These guys are never alone.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're usually only used for small patrols.
[SPEAKER_00]: So as we said before, the Imperial Navy's job is to also patrol the segmentum, do small escorting duties, those types of stuff.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's where you're going to see more of your cruisers.
[SPEAKER_00]: Your cruisers are going to come along with maybe a couple frigates.
[SPEAKER_00]: somewhere in that range and they're going to be handling, you know, oh, hey, we heard there was a disturbance on world four seven three two five.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll go out there because it's probably a pirate incursion and there's more than a firepower here to deal with a pirate incursion.
[SPEAKER_00]: But if they get there, and it's a Necron Tomb world, they'll be an astrapath message back.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's all that's coming back.
[SPEAKER_00]: But they'll be an astrapath message back.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think if you like this stuff, that's kind of a, you know, we just kind of lightly touch the surface there of this.
[SPEAKER_00]: Again, battle fleet Gothic Armada, too, is available on Steam right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: I do have it.
[SPEAKER_00]: You can download, if you just want the book, the Google Battle Fleet Gothic Rules PDF.
[SPEAKER_00]: You will find it.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's available out there.
[SPEAKER_00]: I don't feel like we're stealing.
[SPEAKER_00]: My game is twenty seven years old.
[SPEAKER_00]: It hasn't had enough.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a really cool game.
[SPEAKER_00]: I like it a lot, but you like turn based the last bit I want to get into and this goes to tie into the lore and the books is the rankings and the people within the imperial navy because when you're reading
[SPEAKER_00]: God's ghost.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're reading eyes and horn.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're reading kifescane.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're reading any book where they're in a they tend to interact with the imperial navy a lot and they just throw out like guys.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but they never explain what they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm gonna do that now.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but that now so we'll start off with the imperial navy the very top you have the Lord high admiral and the Lord high admiral is as we said.
[SPEAKER_00]: This is a Lord of terror.
[SPEAKER_00]: This person is
[SPEAKER_00]: Completely a figment of lore.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I don't think they have a name, but it doesn't matter who they are.
[SPEAKER_00]: This kind of means is they are the average person to Santa Claus.
[SPEAKER_00]: And just as you probably can't get it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: He exists.
[SPEAKER_00]: His job is to make sure that the admec provides ships, the lords of terror approve funding.
[SPEAKER_00]: The Imperial Guard, the Ecclesiarchy, whatever major crusades they have to agree to, that's their job.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, they are, the next group down though is more interesting.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's where you through the Lord Hyadros.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are the guys that run the segmentum.
[SPEAKER_00]: These ones are more interesting to me because they actually do have an interaction more, because these are the ones who will decide the size, the battle fleet.
[SPEAKER_00]: They will decide what goes where, how much goes there.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they start actually getting more involved in the planning and the structure.
[SPEAKER_00]: They may even have
[SPEAKER_00]: a vested interest in a certain crusade that is going on, because perhaps it was even their idea to launch said crusade.
[SPEAKER_02]: The references, guys, quite a bit on this in some of the codices, especially when you talk about the guard, go to some of that, which is, and they kind of just go, which ones are good, which ones are bad, because if you have a great Lord high admiral, he probably kept in his proactive on keeping the peace and putting things down.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then you have the bad ones.
[SPEAKER_02]: Things happen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And beyond them, you have admirals, vice admirals, rear admirals.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of these are people who run the ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so that these are sometimes you'll have interaction with them.
[SPEAKER_00]: You'll, sorry, sometimes you'll read about interaction with them from the main character of the book who's having an issue on the ship happens.
[SPEAKER_00]: I think the second God's Ghost book, I'm not mistaken, where he has to go to the Lord and say, hey, we're having a war inside of your own ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: Is that cool?
[SPEAKER_00]: No?
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's still happening.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the next tier down are what are called the warrant officers.
[SPEAKER_00]: The warrant officer has a title, a shipmaster, gun captain, sergeant at arms.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are the things that they're in charge of.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the warrant officers job is to oversee a critical part and function of the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: But what I love about the word officers is that function that they're overseeing is always handled by the enlisted class.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the warrant officer comes from the enlisted class.
[SPEAKER_00]: I love this because every warrant officer only has their warrant because they rose up within the enlisted class to really show themselves to be experienced and knowledgeable.
[SPEAKER_00]: But it also means that whatever they're assigned to as a warrant officer is what they were as an Adlystic class.
[SPEAKER_00]: So if you are the gun captain of this ship, that means you were a gunnery soldier.
[SPEAKER_00]: Or if you're the Sergeant Arms, you were security.
[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a shipmaster, you were in navigation.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so it does two things.
[SPEAKER_00]: One.
[SPEAKER_00]: it greatly improves the efficacy of whatever they're controlling, but also makes for cool stories.
[SPEAKER_00]: Because now this is somewhere where hey, this gun is failing and the Warren Office is the one who runs over and fixes it and gets it moving.
[SPEAKER_00]: I just think it's a cooler narrative when the guy in charge is like, yeah, I'm also the best mechanic you guys have ever seen.
[SPEAKER_00]: Check this out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're going.
[SPEAKER_00]: below them, though, we move into what are called the ratings.
[SPEAKER_00]: These are just the general troops of the ship and the ratings.
[SPEAKER_02]: You need everyone else, the entire crew.
[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: They are the workforce of the Navy.
[SPEAKER_00]: They drive the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: They fire the guns.
[SPEAKER_00]: They cook.
[SPEAKER_00]: They clean.
[SPEAKER_00]: They also fight.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now get to the voidsman in the second.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cool thing on them before I jump in is these guys are almost all volunteers.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually, well, these really well, being on these imperial, that's what we're comparing.
[SPEAKER_02]: We've got to think a lot of these, again, life, we've did this before, life of the imperial for a lot of these worlds is a nightmare.
[SPEAKER_02]: And being on a ship for this is considered
[SPEAKER_02]: widely better than what you're doing right now.
[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's not even close.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to live longer.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're probably going to have, you actually have believe that living on this ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: You'll have a larger space to live in.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know, your quarters are probably better.
[SPEAKER_00]: Everything's better.
[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, they're well paid.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're well compensated.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually pretty good gig.
[SPEAKER_00]: So they actually
[SPEAKER_00]: do very well.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's why there's so many of these ratings are tend to be easy to find because every planet's like, yeah, I'd like to leave now if I could go there.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, wait a second.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do I want to leave my nightmare world?
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, whatever you're offering.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm good.
[SPEAKER_00]: that within the ratings, there are really ninety percent of them are just the workers in the ship, but the last ten percent have models in the game and I own a bunch of those models.
[SPEAKER_00]: Those are forotsman.
[SPEAKER_00]: I've paired on the AV breachers and forotsman actually I, buddy, I have both of them and a good number of them because I feel weird army.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's, I build weird armies, but the voidsmen, Brad and I were discussing earlier about when we fire boarding torpedoes into a ship and Space Marines pop out, or Imperial Navy breachers voidsmen do.
[SPEAKER_00]: That's this other group.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so these guys are masters that ship to ship combat, and they do two things.
[SPEAKER_00]: They defend the ship against invaders, and they invade other ships to blow them up from the inside.
[SPEAKER_00]: Big fan, they're also the security force in the ship, but that's the lazy person here.
[SPEAKER_00]: Really good sanitors.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, there is one other class though.
[SPEAKER_00]: Remember how I just said that it pays really well to be there?
[SPEAKER_00]: It does.
[SPEAKER_00]: But there are some jobs you can't pay someone to do.
[SPEAKER_00]: And that's what the indentured workers are for.
[SPEAKER_00]: The indentured workers are
[SPEAKER_00]: taken in via press gangs off penal colonies.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you did something bad on your world or were accused of doing something bad and got convicted of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: But either way, you're there and a big ship lands and you think, hey, that's kind of interesting.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then all of a sudden, you find yourself in the bowels of said big ship working on their engines while they're still running.
[SPEAKER_02]: or for their super toxic guns, because sometimes we fire crazy things that are supposed to break up the ship and everything else.
[SPEAKER_02]: Hey, welcome to rad guns, add back thanks.
[SPEAKER_02]: But also remember, you know, I'm giving this.
[SPEAKER_02]: I did this on our first one that didn't get out and I'm doing it again now, which is one of my favorites is yes, they get the penal colonies, but like if they've taken heavy losses or people who died they need to replace,
[SPEAKER_02]: Don't go out to eat or go for a drink near the docks when the big ships.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah, no.
[SPEAKER_00]: They'll grab anybody because once they're off world.
[SPEAKER_00]: Come find me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Exactly.
[SPEAKER_00]: The cool thing about these indentured workers though is the lore they do come up a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: They're copying in two areas.
[SPEAKER_00]: First off, they become really good knowledge centers for like the inquisition and whatnot because they know what's going on in the bowels of the ship.
[SPEAKER_00]: is the endangered workers' work in places that the rest of the ship doesn't want to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, like the void, the guard, the voidsman guards basically stand outside of the section that the endangered workers' work in.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they'll go into they have to, but they tend to hang out with the outside.
[SPEAKER_02]: So let's talk about another reason when they come up with the stories quite a bit, because this is also just a prime breeding ground for canned cultists.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, this is why the voidsman have to stand on just on the outside because they're going there and deal with the chaos cult that just formed on the inside of the show or the jeans dealer called we're a primary show something goes so no one's gonna come down here and I can just infect everybody.
[SPEAKER_02]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: This seems fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: So the dentured workers are kind of, again, they don't, they're super messed up, but they get used in the lower a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I wanted to bring them up.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that's probably a good enough coverage here.
[SPEAKER_00]: I hope all of you did find this interesting, because as you can tell, I like it a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's a cool autonomy.
[SPEAKER_00]: But the goal here was just to kind of cover space travel enough and explain some of enough so we can do
[SPEAKER_00]: everything we've been doing over the course of the cast because it was always building towards more stuff we can cover every piece information we give you means it's something that we don't have to recover again later when telling a bigger story and next week we're going to do just that next week we're going to begin our coverage of the war of the beast
[SPEAKER_00]: probably about three casts.
[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't written them all yet.
[SPEAKER_00]: I never know how long it's going to go.
[SPEAKER_00]: The idea is to start from the very beginning, actually the pre the pre history of the war, the beast all the way up through the conclusion of it and the way that it just completely changed the imperial.
[SPEAKER_02]: Great story, but you know what it also includes a lot of.
[SPEAKER_00]: lords of terror.
[SPEAKER_00]: Plural because we're going to have to cover some changes to the lords of Harry and it's a result of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: There's a lot of news, a lot of dice.
[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I'm cool.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of them, Brad.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, but they don't know.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: All of them died.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got put back in.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_02]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then they got new ones.
[UNKNOWN]: And
[SPEAKER_00]: So next week Brad's gonna complain a lot, and that'll be fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: But this has been John Barsadian, Brad Jester.
[SPEAKER_00]: This guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: We'll see you guys next week.
[UNKNOWN]: you
