<v Speaker 1>Welcome back everyone to the Game Informer Show, a weekly
<v Speaker 1>podcast covering the video game industry. Join us every Friday
<v Speaker 1>for a discussion but the latest gaming news, reviews, and
<v Speaker 1>exclusive reveals, alongside Game and Former staff and special guests
<v Speaker 1>from around the industry. I'm one of your hosts today,
<v Speaker 1>Alex van Aiken, and today I'm joined by Marcus Stewart.
<v Speaker 2>How you doing, Hey, I'm doing well. How are you.
<v Speaker 1>I'm hanging in there, Marcus. I'm feeling good. It's good
<v Speaker 1>to be back. I've been traveling on a bunch of
<v Speaker 1>work trips lately, and yeah, yeah, a lot a lot
<v Speaker 1>of global travel.
<v Speaker 3>Happening at GI.
<v Speaker 1>But we're back. I did go to Magic Con in
<v Speaker 1>Las Vegas. Magic the Gathering convention for those who think
<v Speaker 1>it's actual magic. I'll get into that in a second.
<v Speaker 1>But we're also joined by Charles Hart.
<v Speaker 3>Hey, Charles, Hello, I went to a real magic con.
<v Speaker 3>Like I can cast spells.
<v Speaker 1>Now, that's cool. So you know, it's funny enough. Same here,
<v Speaker 1>because the latest Magic the Gathering set is Secrets of
<v Speaker 1>Strickxhaven and so it's a bunch of it's a bunch
<v Speaker 1>of cards about like wizards and like it's a school
<v Speaker 1>for here's a here's one of the cards I pulled
<v Speaker 1>the quandrics proof.
<v Speaker 3>That's a D and D H they've crossed over. That's
<v Speaker 3>like a D and D strick saving book. No one's
<v Speaker 3>that's really overpowered.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah that makes sense. I mean both published by Wizards
<v Speaker 1>the Coast.
<v Speaker 2>Now I have to ask, like, as someone that is
<v Speaker 2>a magic the Gathering ignorant, is that any different than
<v Speaker 2>I would imagine at least fifty percent of the existing
<v Speaker 2>cards involve magic and wizards.
<v Speaker 3>It's a great question as someone who doesn't know there's
<v Speaker 3>a lot of so Magic has planes walkers who are
<v Speaker 3>kind of like magic has made up of a bunch
<v Speaker 3>of different universes within itself or like world and there
<v Speaker 3>are like planes walkers who come from those worlds, and
<v Speaker 3>they're the ones who can walk between the realms essentially
<v Speaker 3>the planes they're planes walkers, And so you'll see them
<v Speaker 3>like crossover and like go into other places that they're
<v Speaker 3>not normally at. And some of those places are like
<v Speaker 3>sci fi.
<v Speaker 1>Like last year they had Edge of Eternities that's like
<v Speaker 1>a very much like it was set in space and
<v Speaker 1>it's like all these like it's like Star Wars kind
<v Speaker 1>of you know, Gundam, but they do have like some
<v Speaker 1>areas like Strixhaven is a place is a realm, like
<v Speaker 1>it takes place in a realm. In magic, there's also
<v Speaker 1>I mean, yeah, there's like witches and.
<v Speaker 3>It's like a school. It's a school. Yeah, it's a
<v Speaker 3>school of magic.
<v Speaker 1>And there's there's all sorts of I wouldn't say it's
<v Speaker 1>fifty percent magic and wizards. I would say, you know,
<v Speaker 1>maybe you know, it is a a sub sect of magic.
<v Speaker 3>There's definitely was therds and such.
<v Speaker 1>But I mean there's there's like Bloomborough was like a
<v Speaker 1>red Wall. It's like a red Wall style realm, or
<v Speaker 1>like Secrets of Nim where like it's a bunch of
<v Speaker 1>like mouses and.
<v Speaker 3>There are a lot of like warlocks and stuff.
<v Speaker 1>I don't know, Marcus, it's complicated.
<v Speaker 3>I wouldn't because.
<v Speaker 1>There's vampires, there's birds, there's dragons, There's there's so many
<v Speaker 1>things the others.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, empires, birds, dragons.
<v Speaker 2>Final fantasies and there. Now, I went to the target
<v Speaker 2>the other day and I saw ninja turtles or in
<v Speaker 2>the universe.
<v Speaker 1>Is beyond those are not within the universes of magic itself.
<v Speaker 3>The lore of Magic.
<v Speaker 2>Oh, I know that, but it kind of fits your
<v Speaker 2>description of like there was there is in game loar
<v Speaker 2>for Hey, we can jump to other dimensions and other places,
<v Speaker 2>and this is our finally veiled excuse to bring in
<v Speaker 2>another ip like Avatar. And I don't know eventually, I'm
<v Speaker 2>waiting for him to just get the wrestling, like at
<v Speaker 2>some point gonna.
<v Speaker 1>Come out and you won't see that in a lot
<v Speaker 1>of those, like really wacky ones are like the Dwight
<v Speaker 1>shout from the office. Those are type of secret layer.
<v Speaker 1>Oh yeah, there's a Dwight shrewt secret layer set secretly
<v Speaker 1>the office. It's five different cards of just him. He
<v Speaker 1>didn't know that and very hold on, let me let me.
<v Speaker 2>Pull it up.
<v Speaker 3>Let me pull it up, Dwight.
<v Speaker 2>I was like, if there's an office like starter deck,
<v Speaker 2>I would have already I would have paid so much
<v Speaker 2>money for that. I would have learned magic to play
<v Speaker 2>the office deck.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, so they've got this podcast started about how we
<v Speaker 3>we want to keep it quick and we've immediately.
<v Speaker 1>White Okay, really quick, I'll just read this and we'll
<v Speaker 1>move on. So the secret Layer and the office collaboration
<v Speaker 1>was just Dwight. There are seven cards. They're holographic well
<v Speaker 1>secretly can do hollow or foil but whatever. And they
<v Speaker 1>are usually like repri of already existing cards.
<v Speaker 3>They aren't like brand new cards.
<v Speaker 1>Like it's just like there's a Dwight altar of like
<v Speaker 1>alter not not like prayer.
<v Speaker 2>It's like an existing effect but it's Dwight them yeah.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, and it has the name of the original card underneath, right,
<v Speaker 1>so you know that it's like what card it is.
<v Speaker 1>But there's Dwight a lantern, there's Dwight shrut hay King,
<v Speaker 1>there's Dwight's weapons stash, there's Dwight Assistant to the King. Uh,
<v Speaker 1>there's Recyclops Eco Friendly, Recyclops, Nature's Revenge, Nature Vengeance, and
<v Speaker 1>then Swords to Plowshares, which is just him on his
<v Speaker 1>farm farming beats. But these are all like, you know,
<v Speaker 1>variations of magic cards that exist with special Dwight treatment.
<v Speaker 1>But yeah, it's very silly and we've gotten off the rails.
<v Speaker 1>But uh, before we get into the show proper, I
<v Speaker 1>do you just want to say, Hey, if you want
<v Speaker 1>to support the show, please head over to gaminformer dot com,

<v Speaker 1>best way to support the show. Second best way is
<v Speaker 1>to share the show with a friend, please. And so guys,
<v Speaker 1>let's get into the show. Like I said, I went
<v Speaker 1>to Magic Con Las Vegas and had a great time.
<v Speaker 3>One Jeff Cork.
<v Speaker 1>You know fans of Game and Formerabile remember a long
<v Speaker 1>time Game of former editor Jeff Cork. He's doing pr
<v Speaker 1>over there for Wizards these days, and he was there
<v Speaker 1>so I.
<v Speaker 3>Got to hang out with him.
<v Speaker 1>But but yeah, we saw a lot of we saw
<v Speaker 1>upcoming looks at the new Hobbit set coming out.
<v Speaker 3>The you were talking about.
<v Speaker 1>All the we were talking about all the realms of
<v Speaker 1>magic earlier. There's a new one called Reality Fracture that's
<v Speaker 1>coming later this year, where it's like it's kind of
<v Speaker 1>like a what if set within magic, and so you know,
<v Speaker 1>people who are typically fire wielders are now like ice
<v Speaker 1>and like there's a lot of there's a lot of
<v Speaker 1>lore what if fun stuff. And the cool thing about
<v Speaker 1>that set is they're like, well, we want it to
<v Speaker 1>make sense even if you don't know the lore of magic,
<v Speaker 1>Like if this is your first set, you need to
<v Speaker 1>know in order to understand the what if, you need
<v Speaker 1>to know the original. So every pack in that set
<v Speaker 1>is going to come with two versions of a character
<v Speaker 1>or like a spell or something, or a place like
<v Speaker 1>a land or something. And so you'll get the original
<v Speaker 1>like what they're supposed to look like, and then another
<v Speaker 1>card will will be there what if version, so you
<v Speaker 1>kind of appreciate the difference, which I thought was cool.
<v Speaker 1>They also were saying, like, I think naturally a lot
<v Speaker 1>of people are like, how the hell did you figure
<v Speaker 1>that out? Logistically within a product that you have to
<v Speaker 1>ship out, you know, but they wouldn't spill the beans,
<v Speaker 1>but they said they will, they will soon. But yeah,
<v Speaker 1>we got to look at the Marvel the upcoming Marvel
<v Speaker 1>Superhero set. The actor for Vision came out on stage. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>yeah he was there, and.
<v Speaker 2>He was he a full vision garb.
<v Speaker 1>No, he looked very normal, but he did have a
<v Speaker 1>vision the Mindstone and he put it into a gauntlet.
<v Speaker 3>Wow. Yeah, unlike Vision. Yeah, I would never do.
<v Speaker 2>Would would be pretty traumatic for him to relive that.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, he didn't make a joke about that. But yeah,
<v Speaker 1>Magic Cop was really fun. I played in a few
<v Speaker 1>like really wacky ticketed events that were I played a
<v Speaker 1>lot of everything I like wanted to play was like
<v Speaker 1>Strict Saving, which is, like I said, the new Magic
<v Speaker 1>School set, And yeah, it was just a ton of fun.
<v Speaker 1>I pulled some great cards I'm excited to add to
<v Speaker 1>my deck. And then I got home and they had
<v Speaker 1>shipped me out some product of the new sequence of
<v Speaker 1>Strick Saving set. So I opened those up and I
<v Speaker 1>pulled some cards I'd been really wanting a lot of.
<v Speaker 1>I'm building a dragon deck, and so I finally pulled
<v Speaker 1>like several dragons I'd been wanting this is probably look
<v Speaker 1>at this guy, PRIs MARII the inspiration very cool dragon.
<v Speaker 1>I got Quandricks the Proof another dragon and they are like, uh,
<v Speaker 1>they kind of represent the school, like the schools are
<v Speaker 1>kind of named after them, after the dragons. So it's
<v Speaker 1>been a good weekend. But I'm glad to be home.
<v Speaker 1>But yeah, Magic hom was fun, had a lot of
<v Speaker 1>good times. Saw John Carson, hung out with him a
<v Speaker 1>bunch former game former editor and hung out in a
<v Speaker 1>lot with the why Though folks, blessing Hi from kind
<v Speaker 1>of Funny, and of course Tom Casswell from Game Spot.
<v Speaker 1>Joseph Bradford. I don't know if you all have met him.
<v Speaker 1>I met him during the Iceland trip for eve FanFest
<v Speaker 1>last year. But it was and I see some familiar
<v Speaker 1>faces and it was a good weekend.
<v Speaker 3>But uh, did you did you perform well when you
<v Speaker 3>played Magic? And did you did you do honor by
<v Speaker 3>the game of former names?
<v Speaker 1>I won all of my games that were like official beautiful. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I did drop out with There was one event that
<v Speaker 1>was like really wacky. It'd be far too complicated to
<v Speaker 1>explain on this podcast, but it was supposed to be
<v Speaker 1>like a three or four hour event and it was
<v Speaker 1>turning into like a six hour event. So I won
<v Speaker 1>my first game, and I was like, holy crap, it's
<v Speaker 1>been three hours and we just finished one game. There's
<v Speaker 1>supposed to be three more games, two more games. I'm
<v Speaker 1>dropping out. So I dropped out of the competition. But
<v Speaker 1>I had won some prize tickets and I went and
<v Speaker 1>exchanged it for some packs.
<v Speaker 3>Cool. But yeah, it was a good time.
<v Speaker 1>But Charles, you went somewhere, and I want to hear
<v Speaker 1>I did about where you went.
<v Speaker 3>You kind of talked about it last week. I kind
<v Speaker 3>of did. So. I talked last week that I went
<v Speaker 3>to play Lego Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight, which
<v Speaker 3>I'm very excited about. I talked about all the goodies
<v Speaker 3>I got in the film props and uh, all that, Marcus,
<v Speaker 3>I didn't you weren't here, so you didn't see.
<v Speaker 2>I did listen to the episode.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, I have I have framed Lego Batman villain posters
<v Speaker 3>now and I couldn't decide if they were cool or
<v Speaker 3>kind of cringe.
<v Speaker 2>Wait, hold up the Joker one again. I mean that's
<v Speaker 2>kind of close. I think it's cute, like it's I
<v Speaker 2>think it's funny, Like, I think it's cooler than I mean.
<v Speaker 2>I'm a huge Batman fans, so like a regular Joker
<v Speaker 2>poster would be cool, But I think the lego version, like,
<v Speaker 2>that's that's so specific. I think you said this last week,
<v Speaker 2>like it's specific enough to be on the cooler end
<v Speaker 2>of things, and I agree with that.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, good Marcus approved. Well, so I went and I
<v Speaker 3>also got to play two hours of the game, and
<v Speaker 3>I can talk about that now.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I'm so excited to hear about this. I can't
<v Speaker 1>wait to play this thing.
<v Speaker 3>It's really exciting. I had. I had a great time
<v Speaker 3>with it. I think that the headline for me going
<v Speaker 3>into it was, uh, it's it's basically a lego Arkham game,
<v Speaker 3>and people were really emphasizing the Arkham of it all.
<v Speaker 3>It has like that kind of combat system. There's a
<v Speaker 3>lot of a lot of those elements. Yeah, I think
<v Speaker 3>the thing that stood out to me was how much
<v Speaker 3>it was a lego game, Like there is a lot
<v Speaker 3>of cool modernizations of it, but it's also extremely goofy.
<v Speaker 3>There's a part where Batman starts dancing, uh and literally
<v Speaker 3>says this is how Batman begins to dance and then
<v Speaker 3>does a bunch of dance moves. Voice. Uh, it's not
<v Speaker 3>it doesn't feel like any particular Batman. It's honestly not
<v Speaker 3>the best because that is the Lega movie. It's a
<v Speaker 3>high bar.
<v Speaker 1>And I was like, yeah, I kind of wish they'd
<v Speaker 1>continue to have him voice him because he did such
<v Speaker 1>a good game in the movie.
<v Speaker 2>I think it's a weird thing where like because I've
<v Speaker 2>heard his performance, and I think they're trying to thread
<v Speaker 2>the needle between goofy Batman and serious Batman and they
<v Speaker 2>can't commit to one either way, and I think the
<v Speaker 2>performers trying to kind of like cater to both sides.
<v Speaker 2>I think if you get will Arnette, it has to
<v Speaker 2>go full goofy Batman.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I don't want to do that.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah that's fair.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah. It's also he does so a thing also I
<v Speaker 3>didn't I didn't fully understand about the game until I
<v Speaker 3>played it, is that it is one linear Batman story
<v Speaker 3>and they just kind of pick and choose what makes
<v Speaker 3>the most sense from an existing Batman movie to fit
<v Speaker 3>in that part of the journey. So it's like when
<v Speaker 3>he starts out, he goes and he trains with the
<v Speaker 3>League of shadows. That's all from Batman begins, and then
<v Speaker 3>he comes back and he's hunting Carma and Falcone, but
<v Speaker 3>Carmon and Falconi is also who he hunts early on
<v Speaker 3>in The Batman twenty twenty two. So we get like
<v Speaker 3>a transition and now everyone is the Batman in that
<v Speaker 3>like character design and all that. And then later I
<v Speaker 3>actually saw an example of like when chapter three starts,
<v Speaker 3>we get like a montage scene where everyone basically like
<v Speaker 3>changes their outfits to match what the next movie that's
<v Speaker 3>coming up is. Yeah, so Batman changes into his Batman
<v Speaker 3>and Robin thing. We see the flying Grayson's flipping around,
<v Speaker 3>we see that two face who was he's woken up
<v Speaker 3>in the hospital like in the dark Night. But then
<v Speaker 3>he changes into like Batman Forever Garb and then we're
<v Speaker 3>playing in Batman Forever and Batman and Robin as the
<v Speaker 3>character Robin is introduced. So they tell it in one
<v Speaker 3>arc if you hadn't seen a Batman movie, it would
<v Speaker 3>it would make sense to you. Yeah, but it is
<v Speaker 3>like often pulling and like remixing a bunch of stuff,
<v Speaker 3>which I think is really cool and I'm really excited
<v Speaker 3>to see how how they how they choose to introduce
<v Speaker 3>some of the characters that maybe come up in like
<v Speaker 3>multiple different forms.
<v Speaker 2>And it's never felt like jarring to you, because that
<v Speaker 2>would be My only concern is just like cause it's
<v Speaker 2>it's blending in so many different adaptations, Like it never
<v Speaker 2>feels like thematically jarring at all.
<v Speaker 3>It's I don't think, so it surprisingly works because of
<v Speaker 3>I don't know. It's it's often hard to unless there's
<v Speaker 3>like a really strong set piece, like so the level
<v Speaker 3>I play, the levels I played, I played in the
<v Speaker 3>Iceberg Lounge, which is sort of the opening level, and
<v Speaker 3>you plays Batman and Jim Gordon. Then I played as
<v Speaker 3>Robin's introduction in the the Flying Grayson's in the Circus
<v Speaker 3>and that's when two faces there. And then it did
<v Speaker 3>boss Battle with Batman and Robin versus Poison Ivy, which
<v Speaker 3>was like Batman Forever, and they got to do some
<v Speaker 3>like open world stuff. So Batman and Robin the Poison
<v Speaker 3>Ivy fight was like barely like it referenced some lines
<v Speaker 3>from it, but it didn't like look like the scenes.
<v Speaker 3>I also just watched some of these movies to like
<v Speaker 3>refresh my memory, specifically Batman and Robin.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I think I heard you say last week you
<v Speaker 2>had watched Batman Forever for the first time, which was fascinating.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, and uh, Batman Forever is also like more or
<v Speaker 3>less just from that one movie. But like my favorite scene.
<v Speaker 3>I wrote about this in my preview, But it's like
<v Speaker 3>Batman goes to confront Carmen and Falcone and he's being
<v Speaker 3>served a drink by Selena Kyle, who's Catwoman, as if
<v Speaker 3>she's in the Batman, but he's having a conversation with
<v Speaker 3>the Red Hood as if it's the Joker having conversation
<v Speaker 3>with the Bus in Batman nineteen eighty nine.
<v Speaker 2>Oh god, red Hood. Joke Joker red Hood, not Jason Todd.
<v Speaker 3>Right, correct, the Joker red Hood. So they're having conversation.
<v Speaker 3>But then as he leaves, he says, this town deserves
<v Speaker 3>a better class of criminal, which is a reference to
<v Speaker 3>the Dark Night Right. And so if you know all
<v Speaker 3>these things are happening, you can have kind of like
<v Speaker 3>the galaxy brain, like, oh, they're doing this and this
<v Speaker 3>and this are firing everywhere. Yeah, but if you don't
<v Speaker 3>know the references, or you don't know all the references,
<v Speaker 3>it's still like a perfectly coherent scene. It was just
<v Speaker 3>one that stood out to me because it was like,
<v Speaker 3>not a particularly pivotal moment, but I was surprised by
<v Speaker 3>how much all of these different things have blended together.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>Maybe the most surprising thing is they were in the
<v Speaker 3>Iceberg lounge and the penguin did not appear. It's always
<v Speaker 3>his place, it's named after he's a penguin, he's on icebergs.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, it feels like the video game equivalent of like
<v Speaker 2>a collage of like we're gonna cut out pieces of
<v Speaker 2>like texts from different like newspapers and different books and
<v Speaker 2>then string them together into a coherent sentence, even if
<v Speaker 2>it's all technically derived from different places.
<v Speaker 3>Yes, yeah, it very much. It very much is like
<v Speaker 3>someone is trying to remember. They're like, I saw a
<v Speaker 3>Batman movie once and I think this is what happened,
<v Speaker 3>and it's just all the Badman movies meld together. The
<v Speaker 3>Arkham stuff. Though there's a good reason why people compare
<v Speaker 3>to those games. It has a basically identical combat system.
<v Speaker 3>It's a little bit simplified. It's not as intense or difficult,
<v Speaker 3>but you can change the difficulty up to dark Night mode,
<v Speaker 3>which gives you less health and introduces more like special enemies,
<v Speaker 3>so it'll be more enemies and a higher percentage of
<v Speaker 3>them will be like shield guys or gun guys or
<v Speaker 3>sword guys that you have to like hit from behind
<v Speaker 3>or dodge around or something like that. Cool, and then
<v Speaker 3>the open world feels very Arkham Night like it is
<v Speaker 3>just you're flying around Gotham City. They'll be random, like
<v Speaker 3>random crimes on the street you can stop. I'm pretty
<v Speaker 3>sure there are Riddler trophies. There's a bunch of other
<v Speaker 3>side quests. There's a ton of like vehicles to collect,
<v Speaker 3>so it's very much like a game. I'm excited to
<v Speaker 3>see the story, and I also like, I want to
<v Speaker 3>try one hundred percent this game when it comes out.
<v Speaker 3>It gave me that fine of like I just want
<v Speaker 3>to play this game forever.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, yeah, Batman forever. Perhaps there you go, we did it, Charles. Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>I watched the NGT that you did with Kyle, and
<v Speaker 2>like immediately, like you said, seeing the open war and
<v Speaker 2>you're just like, oh, this is this is Arkham Knight.
<v Speaker 2>And it's exciting because I feel like and probably like
<v Speaker 2>a lot of Batman fans, like I've been chasing the
<v Speaker 2>Arkham High since Arkham Knight ended, and there's been like
<v Speaker 2>like Gotham Knights didn't do it for me personally, and
<v Speaker 2>then Suicide Squad did even less for me. Like it's
<v Speaker 2>been a lot of just like I just want to
<v Speaker 2>feel that again, and this feels like the closest we've
<v Speaker 2>gotten to that since then, and so I'm hoping it's
<v Speaker 2>the one that finally, you know, like like scratches that
<v Speaker 2>itch that we've been feeling since what like twenty fifteen. Yeh,
<v Speaker 2>twenty fifteen was Arka Night. It's been eleven years.
<v Speaker 3>Been years, geez, yeah, I've I remember every time I
<v Speaker 3>say a memory, it makes everyone feel old. So I
<v Speaker 3>just want to understand. I am not trying to make
<v Speaker 3>you guys feel old, but I have a distinct memory
<v Speaker 3>of being in eighth grade and on the school computers
<v Speaker 3>watch one of the revealed trailers for Batman Arkham Knight
<v Speaker 3>and being like, oh my gosh, this is going to
<v Speaker 3>be the best game ever. See this still like a
<v Speaker 3>year or two before it came out.
<v Speaker 2>I think when you get into when you start referencing
<v Speaker 2>the twenty tens, it's like, well, I was already an adult
<v Speaker 2>by then, so like it all flattens out. It's when
<v Speaker 2>you when you treat the nineties like a period piece,
<v Speaker 2>then yeah, then the dust like I become the Matt
<v Speaker 2>Damon meme of him rapidly Asian.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, there is a game that we're going to talk
<v Speaker 1>about a little later that Charles referenced yesterday in the
<v Speaker 1>morning meeting as a period piece, and it's historical fiction.
<v Speaker 1>I think everyone died a little inside.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I mean even even Batman Forever. We were talking
<v Speaker 3>about with Kyle and he was like, I saw that
<v Speaker 3>movie twice in theaters and I was like, oh, that
<v Speaker 3>came out five years before I was born, so you
<v Speaker 3>were you were old enough to see it in the
<v Speaker 3>theaters and I was my parents weren't married yet.
<v Speaker 2>It's like I had a similar memory where I saw
<v Speaker 2>it in theaters too, as I had the Batmobile toy
<v Speaker 2>from that movie and the awful Sega Genesis game that
<v Speaker 2>is a piece of garbage that I played way too
<v Speaker 2>much because it was the only bad game I had.
<v Speaker 3>Oh. The other thing I just wanted to say is
<v Speaker 3>like it it's fun. I like the spirit of it.
<v Speaker 3>It's very much a Lego game, so it is still
<v Speaker 3>very silly. We do have like cooler the combats much better,
<v Speaker 3>but there's still gonna be parts where you're like in
<v Speaker 3>a room and you just have to smash all the
<v Speaker 3>items made of Legos and then build some contraption that's
<v Speaker 3>going to get you into the next room. There's still
<v Speaker 3>lots of like light puzzle solving and stuff like that,
<v Speaker 3>but there's all there's I think there's like just enough
<v Speaker 3>complexity that it makes it a lot more like universal,
<v Speaker 3>where I think a lot of Lego games, especially early
<v Speaker 3>Lego games, are simple enough that it's like, once you're
<v Speaker 3>like in you know, thirteen plus, I can see someone
<v Speaker 3>being like, ah, this is like too simple for me
<v Speaker 3>to actually enjoy.
<v Speaker 2>This.
<v Speaker 3>One has like you can upgrade all your gadgets to
<v Speaker 3>do different cool things. There's like combat skill trees, There's
<v Speaker 3>lots of collectibles and stuff and things to do. So
<v Speaker 3>I think they've done a good job from what I played,
<v Speaker 3>of making it very universal, which is cool. And if
<v Speaker 3>you want to hear more of my thoughts and Kyle's
<v Speaker 3>thoughts and me making Kyle feel old, we do have
<v Speaker 3>an n GT up on YouTube channel right now that
<v Speaker 3>will like show you some more specific game plan on Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, well cool, Well I know Charles, you have something
<v Speaker 1>else you wanted to cover Batman related?
<v Speaker 3>I do. So We've got another another episode of Everyone's
<v Speaker 3>Everyone's Favorite show, and it's called GIANTA Know. There we go,
<v Speaker 3>g I oughta know. We're back with our listeners.
<v Speaker 1>He did play a sound put a time stamp in
<v Speaker 1>you want a time stamp in. He did play a
<v Speaker 1>Discord soundboard theme song of g I know that I've
<v Speaker 1>haven't heard before.
<v Speaker 2>You never have you never been part of.
<v Speaker 3>If you haven't been on this is the two or
<v Speaker 3>three oh of Ia. No, yeah, this is my this
<v Speaker 3>is my show that I made up. It's just a
<v Speaker 3>trivia game. We're gonna go. We're gonna do some trivia
<v Speaker 3>for Lego Batman. Specifically, I was gonna do Batman trivia,
<v Speaker 3>but I was like, yeah, that's not really fair. So
<v Speaker 3>we're a new trivia of the Lego Batman games. You
<v Speaker 3>guys are going to be competing and we'll see who
<v Speaker 3>comes out on top. Okay, you guys.
<v Speaker 2>I just want to note that Charles is wearing a
<v Speaker 2>green shirt, so he's basically the Riddler right now.
<v Speaker 3>That is crucially a blue shirt, Marcus, It's definitely blue.
<v Speaker 2>It looks green on my screen like a like a,
<v Speaker 2>you either need to.
<v Speaker 1>Calibrate your screen or your eyes. This is like has
<v Speaker 1>Verry blue.
<v Speaker 3>Pretty close to Alex's.
<v Speaker 2>Alex's and alex denim looks more blue than that shirt.
<v Speaker 1>They are the same color, my friends.
<v Speaker 2>This is the first question.
<v Speaker 3>Actually, riddle me this not including Legacy the Dark Knight
<v Speaker 3>and excluding mobile games, in how many games is Lego
<v Speaker 3>Batman a playable character? And this is multiple choice. We've
<v Speaker 3>got A three, B, four, C, five or D seven.
<v Speaker 3>One more time, the question of not including Legacy of
<v Speaker 3>the Dark Knight and excluding mobile games, in how many
<v Speaker 3>video games is Lego Batman a playable character? Mark the
<v Speaker 3>answers three, four, five or seven.
<v Speaker 2>I just buzzed myself and as a Ben Hanson's host,
<v Speaker 2>thing is what I wait say it was? Which one
<v Speaker 2>was B?
<v Speaker 3>There's three, four, five or seven? I was gonna go five,
<v Speaker 3>I'm gonna go seven. I'm gonna go seven. Final answers, Yes,
<v Speaker 3>Alex is correct. Seven instances of playable Lego Batman. This
<v Speaker 3>is Lego Batman one, two, three, the Lego Movie Game
<v Speaker 3>one and two, Lego Dimensions, and Lego DCS. I couldn't
<v Speaker 3>remember which other games he appeared in but I knew
<v Speaker 3>he appeared and other Lego games.
<v Speaker 2>I forgot they did games based on the Lego movies.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, without those, it would be five, you'd be correct.
<v Speaker 3>The Lego Batman game A question two? Where don't meet
<v Speaker 3>this again? The Lego Batman game center around a suit
<v Speaker 3>swapping mechanic. Which of the following suits was available in
<v Speaker 3>Lego Batman one. We've got the demolition suit, the power suit,
<v Speaker 3>the speed suit, and the magic suit. Again, that is
<v Speaker 3>the demolition suit, the power suit, the speed suit, and
<v Speaker 3>the magic suit.
<v Speaker 2>Marcus, Marcus, which one of these was available?
<v Speaker 3>Which one is is available?
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna say the power suit.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, Strategically, I'm also going to go for the power suit.
<v Speaker 3>I don't like great answers. Final final answer, You're both
<v Speaker 3>unfortunately incorrect. The power suit is available in Lego Batman two,
<v Speaker 3>but in Lego Batman one it is the demo I was.
<v Speaker 1>Gonna say that was gonna be my guest Dan.
<v Speaker 3>They upgraded the demolition suit to the power suit, so
<v Speaker 3>it gave Batman super strength and you could still do bombs.
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna let the viewers know in case I in
<v Speaker 2>case my performance does not improve. I have never played
<v Speaker 2>a Lego Batman game, so this is all new to me.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, I was like, I don't played one of them. Okay,
<v Speaker 3>uh three Lego Batman one was inconsistent with how often
<v Speaker 3>each suit was used, which if Batman's suits was only
<v Speaker 3>required in a single level, so suit only appears to
<v Speaker 3>be required one time. Got the Arctic suit, the heat
<v Speaker 3>protection suit, the Sonic suit, or the glide suit.
<v Speaker 1>I'll be a better I'm not gonna just pick Marcus's
<v Speaker 1>answer every time to win. I'll be a better sports player. So, Alex,
<v Speaker 1>I'm gonna go the Frozen suit, Arctic suit.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I'm gonna go the So I'm trying to think
<v Speaker 2>of like his villains of like Arctic. You might use
<v Speaker 2>that against mister Freeze. I feel like you could maybe
<v Speaker 2>use that in ping. Maybe maybe in those games the
<v Speaker 2>iceberg lounge is actually sub zero temperatures. He needs to know.
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna go Sonar. I feel like you would use
<v Speaker 2>Sonar maybe against Man bat And then that's about it.
<v Speaker 3>Maybe this is d the Sonics suit is what that's called.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, assuming I have no idea how it actually functions
<v Speaker 2>in the gates, I could be well off I'm just
<v Speaker 2>gonna go say, sonar.
<v Speaker 3>Uh. The answer was be the heat protection suit. It
<v Speaker 3>appears for like literally one puzzle and then you switch
<v Speaker 3>out of it and you never turn into well. But
<v Speaker 3>the games advertised as Badman having five different suits.
<v Speaker 2>I thought it was gonna be like, oh, it is
<v Speaker 2>a fighting firefly and that's how he counters them.
<v Speaker 1>So I do have a question, what what What are
<v Speaker 1>the typical scores at the end of this game for people?
<v Speaker 3>This is a harder one, specifically you like the past
<v Speaker 3>ones we did. It was based on like the Game Awards,
<v Speaker 3>This is the history of game Awards. I did one
<v Speaker 3>based on like Game Reforms. Ten out of ten scores. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>this is one that I do remember listening to.
<v Speaker 2>This is definitely the hardest you've ever done, because we
<v Speaker 2>have maybe maybe someone.
<v Speaker 3>Might have played Lego Batman and no uh question four.
<v Speaker 3>Each story arc and Logo bobmin one is led by
<v Speaker 3>a different primary villain name each of them. You'll get
<v Speaker 3>a point for each one.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, Marcus, there's three.
<v Speaker 3>Three chapters and each one has a different primary.
<v Speaker 2>I need to get a pen and write this down
<v Speaker 2>in one game or throughout the series.
<v Speaker 3>Lego Batman one has like three yeah, three chunks of
<v Speaker 3>five levels each, and they're each led by like a
<v Speaker 3>big bat.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, can I start rattling mine off?
<v Speaker 3>Go for it.
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna say the Joker, I'm gonna say two face,
<v Speaker 2>and I'm gonna say h it's like it's it's probably
<v Speaker 2>some like real basic be answers. If it's only it's
<v Speaker 2>the first ones that are gonna hit, like the big ones.
<v Speaker 2>I'm trying to dee who the third would be. I'm
<v Speaker 2>torn between two villains. Mmm, you know, I'm gonna say,
<v Speaker 2>who would I say? I said Joker, two face Penguin.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, hmmm, Alex, what are your pulls?
<v Speaker 1>My first one is gonna be Riddler, okay. My second
<v Speaker 1>one he's going to be Joker, and my third one
<v Speaker 1>is going to be mister Freeze.
<v Speaker 2>Interesting.
<v Speaker 3>Interesting, you went Riddler, Joker, mister Freeze, and Marcus went Joker,
<v Speaker 3>two face Penguin. Yeah, okay, you each get two points.
<v Speaker 3>Oh the three are it is the Joke, The first
<v Speaker 3>one is the Riddler, the second one is the Penguin,
<v Speaker 3>third one is the Joker.
<v Speaker 2>I was torn on Riddler and Catwoman at one point.
<v Speaker 3>Oh sure, I think uh I just also have kind
<v Speaker 3>of like a sidekick. So it's like Riddler and two
<v Speaker 3>Face weirdly Penguin and Catwoman and then Joker and Harley Quinn.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, two Joker and two Faces at that moment together.
<v Speaker 2>That's funny.
<v Speaker 1>I was just like, you can't. I mean, like, the
<v Speaker 1>Riddler is such like a when you're making a game,
<v Speaker 1>I feel like he could just be a you can
<v Speaker 1>make so many levels that are just like, oh, and
<v Speaker 1>it's the Riddler.
<v Speaker 2>I feel like he's a supporting Maybe it's because the
<v Speaker 2>Arkham use of him, because he's even in the comics.
<v Speaker 2>In the show, he's like a notoriously tough character to
<v Speaker 2>write because you have to come up with riddles for him.
<v Speaker 2>So it's like it's hard to like, instead of dedicating
<v Speaker 2>a whole chapter him to keep him as like a
<v Speaker 2>side villain where you just can put some little challenges,
<v Speaker 2>instead of being like, we have to come up with
<v Speaker 2>a elaborate mystery around him. I guess yeah.
<v Speaker 1>I imagine the Lego games though, like can kind of
<v Speaker 1>like cheat a lot of that stuff under the guys
<v Speaker 1>of somebody.
<v Speaker 3>Lego. Lego Batman one was pre Dialogue and Lego games,
<v Speaker 3>so he had no real backstory. It was just kind
<v Speaker 3>of and I forgot about that.
<v Speaker 2>He's like Panto Mining was the first Lego Star Wars game.
<v Speaker 3>Also like that, Yeah, it was up until a long.
<v Speaker 3>Batman two was actually the first Lego game to have voicing,
<v Speaker 3>and that was in That would have been a good question. Oh,
<v Speaker 3>it's it's one of the questions. It's actually the two
<v Speaker 3>questions from now well about it's about that. Well, let's
<v Speaker 3>let's go. I want to forever on this number five.
<v Speaker 3>Mister Freeze is super overpowered in Lego Batman one. Which
<v Speaker 3>of these abilities does he not have? Got super strength,
<v Speaker 3>immunity to poison, underwater breathing, and freeze gun does he
<v Speaker 3>not have?
<v Speaker 2>Trying to think of the silly Lego version and not
<v Speaker 2>the actual canonical comic version.
<v Speaker 1>Alex chiming in, Uh, what was d freeze gun?
<v Speaker 3>Oh? It was super strength, immunity to poison, underwater breathing,
<v Speaker 3>and freeze gun.
<v Speaker 1>I'm gonna say immunity to drowning because.
<v Speaker 3>The underwater breathing is the answer.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, community to drowning.
<v Speaker 3>I can't you can't breathe. It's just a drowning can't
<v Speaker 3>kill you. So it's kind of a state of sustaine
<v Speaker 3>the whole time. I just can't die.
<v Speaker 2>That's terrified. He has a terrible life anyway. Yeah, I
<v Speaker 2>was actually leaning towards underwater breathing too. Yeah, I'll say
<v Speaker 2>that too.
<v Speaker 3>You both are correct. He cannot be water. He is
<v Speaker 3>immune to poison and has super strength.
<v Speaker 2>Though.
<v Speaker 3>How did the.
<v Speaker 1>Poison mechanic work? Was there a mechanic?
<v Speaker 3>Like what There's like pools of acid on the ground
<v Speaker 3>and certain characters can walk across them without being harmed,
<v Speaker 3>like the Joker, mister Freeze maybe Harley Quinn.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah what mister Freeze makes sense. He's like in a
<v Speaker 2>full like has Matt suit basically?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah? So yeah, yeah yeah uh. Question six. Lego Batman
<v Speaker 3>two was the first Lego game to have original voice acting.
<v Speaker 3>Who did they cast to play Batman? A? Will Arnett, B.
<v Speaker 3>Matt Mercer, C Troy Baker or D Nolan North.
<v Speaker 2>Marcus d oh.
<v Speaker 3>Alex Alex says Nolan North Marcus, what do you say?
<v Speaker 2>I'm gonna say Matt Mercer.
<v Speaker 3>Matt Mercer. Final answers Yes, Yes, as always it was
<v Speaker 3>Troy Baker, really dam Troy Baker. He played Lego Batman
<v Speaker 3>and then he wanted to play the Joker in Oh no,
<v Speaker 3>he also played Batman in Arkham Origins.
<v Speaker 2>No, no, no, no, he's played he played Joker.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, yeah, no, only nore.
<v Speaker 1>Than been done voice acting for games for so long,
<v Speaker 1>and I was just like, oh yeah, and I'm sure,
<v Speaker 1>I'm sure it's him.
<v Speaker 3>Part of the reason I like doing these quiz is
<v Speaker 3>because I like coming up with correct sounding wrong answer.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, yeah, that was one of them.
<v Speaker 3>All right, this is my favorite question Number seven, Tim Drake.
<v Speaker 3>This is Robin's alter ego is playable as a civilian
<v Speaker 3>in only two of three Lego Batman games. Which game
<v Speaker 3>is he excluded from? A Lego Batman one because it
<v Speaker 3>didn't have playable secret identities, b Lego Batman two because
<v Speaker 3>Robin in this game was actually Dick Grayson Grayson sorry,
<v Speaker 3>or see Lego Batman three because Robin isn't in this game, so.
<v Speaker 2>He's not specifically he's not playable as a civilian or
<v Speaker 2>he's just like not present in the game whatsoever.
<v Speaker 3>And Lego Batman three, the questions he says it would
<v Speaker 3>be like and three because there's no Robin and Lego
<v Speaker 3>Batman three.
<v Speaker 2>I'm just sorry, Sorry, I might be misunderstanding though.
<v Speaker 3>So the Lego Batman three to to choose C, you're
<v Speaker 3>saying he wasn't in Lego Batman three because Robin wasn't
<v Speaker 3>in that game. That would be agreeing with that question premise.
<v Speaker 3>If you're choosing the other one, you're saying Robin is
<v Speaker 3>in Lego Batman three.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, Okay, I'm gonna say I'm gonna say one A
<v Speaker 2>I I I believe he is in the third game.
<v Speaker 2>So I'm gonna say A were it's they just didn't
<v Speaker 2>have side characters.
<v Speaker 3>They didn't have secret identities or secret I'm gonna go
<v Speaker 3>with that one. Hmm. I'm gonna go B, which was.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, well he was, but it was it was Grayson.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, that's what. That's what the question was. Final answers, Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>Away, hold on it. B does some kind of a
<v Speaker 2>feeling I could see. No, I'm gonna stick to my guns. Okay,
<v Speaker 2>go down with the ship.
<v Speaker 3>Alex is correct. That's four two. So it's a weird,
<v Speaker 3>a weird thing. In that game, when you select Robin's
<v Speaker 3>alter ego, it is listed as Dick Grayson instead of
<v Speaker 3>Tim Drake, even though it's Tim Drake and Lego Batman
<v Speaker 3>one and Lego Batman three. I believe that at some
<v Speaker 3>point the developers came out and said, yeah, that was
<v Speaker 3>a mistake. He should have been Tim Drake. It's supposed
<v Speaker 3>to be the same character, but for whatever reason, it's
<v Speaker 3>swapped out like.
<v Speaker 2>It should have always been Tim Drake.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, all right, I'm gonna skip two of my questions
<v Speaker 3>about Lego Batman three because I don't think you guys
<v Speaker 3>will have any idea what they are.
<v Speaker 1>Because we get end here if you want you know, well,
<v Speaker 1>and well, I've got one.
<v Speaker 3>I'll do my closer question. So, which of the following
<v Speaker 3>Batman villains appear in every mainline Lego Batman game but
<v Speaker 3>was excluded from DC Supervillains. So this is a villain
<v Speaker 3>that was in Lego Batman one, two, and three, but
<v Speaker 3>for some reason was not in Lego DC Supervillains. Okay,
<v Speaker 3>you've got Killer Moth Hush, Solomon Grundy or Mad Hatter.
<v Speaker 2>Hush is a wild villain for kids. To what I'm
<v Speaker 2>just gonna say.
<v Speaker 3>All of these characters do appear in at least one
<v Speaker 3>Lego Batman game.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, so, but this particular one was in all three
<v Speaker 2>but not the villains one. Okay, you said, hush, Killer Moth.
<v Speaker 2>What are the other ones?
<v Speaker 3>Solomon Grundy and Mad Hatter.
<v Speaker 2>And Mad Hatter?
<v Speaker 4>Hmm?
<v Speaker 2>In all three?
<v Speaker 3>The real question is here, who do you think was
<v Speaker 3>in Lego Batman one?
<v Speaker 2>That's what I'm thinking.
<v Speaker 3>That one had fewer fewer villains than the other ones.
<v Speaker 2>But these are all just sort of like it's like
<v Speaker 2>they're not necessarily the A tier Batman villains or the
<v Speaker 2>most extreme right. They're all like the next tier down
<v Speaker 2>of like if you are a real Batman fan, like hardcore, that's.
<v Speaker 3>Even even C tier for some of these.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, yeah, Matt Hatter might be CE tier. Yeah, Solomon
<v Speaker 2>Rooney is weird because he's exclusively a Batman villain.
<v Speaker 1>But yes, Alex, I am going to go.
<v Speaker 3>Mad Hatter, Mad Hatter.
<v Speaker 2>So Mad Hatter isn't all three but not the villain game.
<v Speaker 3>That's what Alex thinks. They cut him from decently. Can
<v Speaker 3>I change sure?
<v Speaker 1>Killer Moth Okay, hmm, Killer Massa get answered to.
<v Speaker 2>I'm like stuck on hush for some reason. He's gonna say,
<v Speaker 2>I's gonna say hush, hush. He's like more of a
<v Speaker 2>closer Batman villain than Killer Moth and Solomon Grande. But
<v Speaker 2>I'm just gonna again stick to my guns and go
<v Speaker 2>down with the ship and say hush yeah.
<v Speaker 1>Final answers, Uh, the answer was Killer Moth.
<v Speaker 3>Alex gets it again weirdly in Lego Batman one, two, three, Alex,
<v Speaker 3>are you making noise?
<v Speaker 2>There?
<v Speaker 3>Is it?
<v Speaker 1>Just no just silence, silent, silent victory.
<v Speaker 2>He's screaming like a bat like we can't perceive the.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, Killer Moth. Weirdly, he gets his own level in
<v Speaker 3>Lego Batman one, he's in two, he's in three, and
<v Speaker 3>then he's not in Lego Batman The DC Supervilles. Hush
<v Speaker 3>is introduced in Lego Batman two. Interestingly, I don't know
<v Speaker 3>whether or not he comes back in other ones, but
<v Speaker 3>he stood out as like a weird character to just
<v Speaker 3>add in that game. And then Mad Hatter is the
<v Speaker 3>closest second answer because he was in all three, wasn't
<v Speaker 3>in four You're Sorry, wasn't in DC super Villains, but
<v Speaker 3>then was added as DLC later.
<v Speaker 2>I should have known Killer Moll just because, like maybe
<v Speaker 2>it's because of the time, like I think of him
<v Speaker 2>and teen Titans as like a record villain, like the
<v Speaker 2>episode where he makes Robin take his was his daughter
<v Speaker 2>to prom or whatever it was.
<v Speaker 3>Do you remember something like that?
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, Wow, feels good to win my first g
<v Speaker 1>I outa.
<v Speaker 3>Now there you go, and once again that was ge
<v Speaker 3>I odda know gerfect.
<v Speaker 1>Well, uh, let's take a quick break and we're gonna

<v Speaker 1>Johnny Graviton and his team right their new game? Correct,
<v Speaker 1>Gavatron Gravitron. Sorry, it's all it all sounds like a transformer.
<v Speaker 3>So yeah.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I've listened to him and interviews in the past.
<v Speaker 1>He's really entertaining guy, and I love to hear him
<v Speaker 1>talk about game design. Yeah, so I'm excited to hear
<v Speaker 1>him talk about Mixtape. Yeah that was I did actually
<v Speaker 1>not hear him talk about Mixtape here you talk about Mixtape,
<v Speaker 1>a game that he's gonna make.
<v Speaker 3>I did interview him for the Soul Frame issue. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>that's like one of my favorite interviews I've done. He
<v Speaker 3>was very, very entertaining a lot of character. Yeah, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>totally Mixtape rocks. I gave it a nine out of ten.
<v Speaker 3>I love it so much. It's uh easily in like
<v Speaker 3>my top three games of this year so far. Wow,
<v Speaker 3>I don't know, it's just it just scratches a very
<v Speaker 3>particular itch for me. That is like just one of
<v Speaker 3>my favorite kinds of games, and I haven't gotten to
<v Speaker 3>play something like this in a while. So what is Mixtape? Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>Mixtape is a it is a coming of age like
<v Speaker 3>narrative driven game, and it is the gameplay is essentially
<v Speaker 3>it's a pretty light on gameplay, but when you are playing,
<v Speaker 3>you are essentially participating in what are like playable music videos.
<v Speaker 3>So you'll the game opens with you guys skating down
<v Speaker 3>a hill and you're just doing skating, but it's kind
<v Speaker 3>of synced up to the music. The characters are like
<v Speaker 3>clapping in time with the music. Cool. Later, you might
<v Speaker 3>be driving down the coastline and there's fireworks and press
<v Speaker 3>buttons to make the fireworks go off as you like
<v Speaker 3>conduct them. There is a part where you're just making slushies.
<v Speaker 3>There's a part where you're in like a photo booth.
<v Speaker 3>There's a part where you're throwing toilet paper at the
<v Speaker 3>principal's house. It's a lot of like very simple things
<v Speaker 3>just kind of make you a more active participant in
<v Speaker 3>what's otherwise like a very passive experience, which is cool
<v Speaker 3>and I it's also all it's called mixtape because it's
<v Speaker 3>all set to a playlist that the main character, Stacy Rockford, makes,
<v Speaker 3>and you're basically playing through what is her last day
<v Speaker 3>with her friends in her town, right before she leaves
<v Speaker 3>after graduating high school to go pursue her dreams to
<v Speaker 3>become a music supervisor. That's cool and it's very it's
<v Speaker 3>very whimsical, but it's also very earnest and it's a
<v Speaker 3>game that is like, uh, does a thing that I
<v Speaker 3>really like in coming of age movies where it's like
<v Speaker 3>as as adults or as people that are not in
<v Speaker 3>their specific situations, you kind of have an awareness of like, well,
<v Speaker 3>things will work out, like things will be fine. You know,
<v Speaker 3>this stuff do seems like a really big deal, but
<v Speaker 3>it's not that big of a deal. But for them
<v Speaker 3>it is like they're at a point in their life
<v Speaker 3>where's like, no, this is the biggest deal. This is
<v Speaker 3>essentially like they kind of reference it once or twice,
<v Speaker 3>but to me, it's kind of like this is the
<v Speaker 3>last day that their friendship is alive because it will
<v Speaker 3>die when Stacy Rockford leaves town.
<v Speaker 2>They reference it constantly, kind of like as you're you're
<v Speaker 2>hanging out with them, and then every now and then
<v Speaker 2>one of them because you have two other friends, and
<v Speaker 2>they'll almost like somewhat passive aggressively or just like slightly
<v Speaker 2>mentioned like yeah, it'd be great if we could do this,
<v Speaker 2>but you're leaving us.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, Marcus. You've also played how far did you get?
<v Speaker 2>I not like like far far, Like it's only like roughly.
<v Speaker 2>I think you told me like about three hours or
<v Speaker 2>so to get through it, So I'm still like within
<v Speaker 2>the first hour. Like the last thing I did was
<v Speaker 2>which I had heard people play this during SGF last year,
<v Speaker 2>Like I did the shopping cart sequence, okay, and I
<v Speaker 2>think I'm on the next sequence after that. So it's
<v Speaker 2>like hanging out in Stacy's room with her two friends
<v Speaker 2>and they're sort of like reminiscing about just like I
<v Speaker 2>seem like the previous school year and all the hyjenks
<v Speaker 2>they got into as they're, like you said, sort of
<v Speaker 2>confronting the reality that their dynamic is about to change,
<v Speaker 2>potentially forever. As Stacey is getting ready to head to
<v Speaker 2>New York to chase this dream of hers.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah. Yeah. The one that's particularly mad about it is
<v Speaker 3>her friend Cassandra.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah's, and that's kind of passive aggressive about it.
<v Speaker 3>Yes. Part of the reason is because they had a
<v Speaker 3>plan to they they live in like northern California, and
<v Speaker 3>she's going to school in southern California, and so they've
<v Speaker 3>had a plan like all through high school that they're
<v Speaker 3>going to do a road trip from northern California down
<v Speaker 3>to southern California, and Stacy's leaving before they can do that.
<v Speaker 3>So they've been playing for years. Yeah, and Stacy's like, actually,
<v Speaker 3>I have to go follow my dreams. And Cassandra's like
<v Speaker 3>fully not not over it even a little bit. Slater,
<v Speaker 3>the other character, Van Slater, is a lot more chill,
<v Speaker 3>a lot more go with the flow, and they'll have
<v Speaker 3>like different approaches to like their lives. Where Stacy is
<v Speaker 3>like free to like decide and pick her dreams. She's like, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>I'm just gonna go for it. I'm gonna go where
<v Speaker 3>the playlist takes me into the future. Cassandra, you'll you'll
<v Speaker 3>see that she has her life confined a little bit
<v Speaker 3>more by her stricter parents. She's kind of fighting against
<v Speaker 3>this destiny other people have given, whereas Slater is just
<v Speaker 3>kind of like go with the flow. He's like, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>I'll just stay here forever. I like this town. I'm
<v Speaker 3>gonna rent till I die. That's what he what he says.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, just like a really.
<v Speaker 3>Really nice dynamic, really good vibe of a game. The characters,
<v Speaker 3>I just went through them all, but they were like
<v Speaker 3>written very very well uh, and yeah, I really really
<v Speaker 3>liked it.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, it's the dialogue. I think it's great, and the
<v Speaker 2>performances are really strong. Also just the it's worth noting
<v Speaker 2>just the the animation is very much in the sort
<v Speaker 2>of like Spider Verse, sort of like stop motion style
<v Speaker 2>that I think really works for this game. Uh Like,
<v Speaker 2>like I think it just looks nice and general like
<v Speaker 2>it's not and and you know, it looks the best
<v Speaker 2>when you are playing through the sort of musical vignettes,
<v Speaker 2>because it gets so like it starts like grounded and
<v Speaker 2>then very quickly becomes a lot more dream like and
<v Speaker 2>surreal as it kind of matches sort of like the
<v Speaker 2>tempo of the song that's playing, and it just becomes
<v Speaker 2>a lot more fantastical in a way that because I
<v Speaker 2>don't think you mentioned this, Charles, but it's worth noting
<v Speaker 2>that this is the team that made the Artful Escape
<v Speaker 2>Beethoven and Dinosaur like so like so there's a lot
<v Speaker 2>of that DNA of just taking music and sort of
<v Speaker 2>presenting it in if very like Grandy Oisse way, like
<v Speaker 2>this game does that. Yeah, extremely well, from like the
<v Speaker 2>vignettes I've played so far.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, and I think also it's worth clarifying two things. One,
<v Speaker 3>it's it's a licensed soundtrack, so this is like real
<v Speaker 3>songs that you might know, you might have heard of before.
<v Speaker 3>It's artists like Devo, Smashing Pumpkins, Iggy Pop. I think
<v Speaker 3>there might be a song from The Cure in there somewhere.
<v Speaker 3>But it's all this sort of like seventies, eighties, nineties
<v Speaker 3>sort of vibe that says.
<v Speaker 2>All the bands that you grew up with Charles.
<v Speaker 3>Right, all the bands that are disbanded for is Born.
<v Speaker 3>And the other thing I do want to clarify, it's
<v Speaker 3>not a rhythm game. So this is not a game
<v Speaker 3>where you're like you're necessarily doing things in time to
<v Speaker 3>the music. The music is very much like the background
<v Speaker 3>that scores the vibe of what's going on.
<v Speaker 2>It's like you can if you want to, Like there's
<v Speaker 2>this when you're in the car listening to a song
<v Speaker 2>and you can hit buttons to make them head bang.
<v Speaker 2>But you're not being prompt in to like you have
<v Speaker 2>to head bang to the beat. You're you can freely
<v Speaker 2>if you want to sink it to the beat, or
<v Speaker 2>make up your own beat, or make them do it offbeat.
<v Speaker 2>It's up to you.
<v Speaker 3>I I played it with my field. I've played that
<v Speaker 3>section several times. I like played it Summer game Fest,
<v Speaker 3>I did a demo when I wrote the feature, I
<v Speaker 3>did the review and then so I played that sequence
<v Speaker 3>several times. And then my fiancee, Alyssa, I was showing
<v Speaker 3>her the game and she played that sequence and when
<v Speaker 3>I played it, I would head bang in time, so
<v Speaker 3>it would be.
<v Speaker 4>Like Turner, no no no, no, no no no, and
<v Speaker 4>Alyssa would be like Turner like it was. It didn't
<v Speaker 4>I can't even do it how she did it, but
<v Speaker 4>she just thought it was really funny that they would
<v Speaker 4>just go like, yeah, and you shook it for audio.
<v Speaker 3>Listeners, I'm just shaking my head frantically randomly, but yeah.
<v Speaker 3>I Also the last thing on A Calla is that
<v Speaker 3>Stacey Rockford main character. I think is especially well written,
<v Speaker 3>and it's very much a thing of the concept of
<v Speaker 3>a mixtape game. I think is an interesting enough premise
<v Speaker 3>of just someone makes a playlist and they listen to
<v Speaker 3>it and that's how the day goes about. Shurely, what
<v Speaker 3>takes this game to the next level for me is
<v Speaker 3>that Stacy is defined as a person that needs this
<v Speaker 3>playlist like she is a person that was like what
<v Speaker 3>kind of person would structure their last day together, score
<v Speaker 3>the whole thing and feel very strongly about existing in
<v Speaker 3>that structure and having kind of always a direction for
<v Speaker 3>what your emotions to be and how do they feel
<v Speaker 3>when maybe things don't go to plan and the baddess
<v Speaker 3>gets changed, or just elements like that where it's a
<v Speaker 3>thing that it could have been a very simple, straightforward,
<v Speaker 3>backseat sort of thing. Yeah, and instead they very much
<v Speaker 3>wove her character into like the fabric of the game
<v Speaker 3>in a way that I think makes this game I
<v Speaker 3>really succeed.
<v Speaker 2>I think it's a cool way to also be introduced
<v Speaker 2>to maybe a bunch of songs or bands that maybe
<v Speaker 2>you're not familiar with, like whether if you didn't grow
<v Speaker 2>up during that time or you just you just weren't
<v Speaker 2>exposed to it because of how much of a of
<v Speaker 2>a music nerd that Stacy is, Like the way that
<v Speaker 2>she introduces each track as like like, hey, this means
<v Speaker 2>a lot to me, but also I can tell you
<v Speaker 2>exactly like this is the name of the song, this
<v Speaker 2>is the name of his band, I can tell you
<v Speaker 2>the year it came out, Like She's skyrocketed towards like
<v Speaker 2>she's the best video game character of the year for
<v Speaker 2>me now because she had like a line of dialogue
<v Speaker 2>with Cassandra where she gushes over moving Pictures by Rush,
<v Speaker 2>which is a top ten album for me. And I'm
<v Speaker 2>just like, Stacy, you know ball Okay, all right, all right, Stacey.
<v Speaker 3>My I wanna we do a dork of the Year
<v Speaker 3>as one of our awards Game of Former at the
<v Speaker 3>end of year. I do want to nominate Slater for
<v Speaker 3>Dork of the Year. There's a there's a line where
<v Speaker 3>Stacy's like, if you guys had powers, what do you
<v Speaker 3>think if I had a power, what do you think
<v Speaker 3>it'd be? And they were like, I don't know, referencing
<v Speaker 3>movies no one's ever seen. What do you think Slater's
<v Speaker 3>power would be? And so it was like noodles, They're
<v Speaker 3>like what he's like, noodles, I exceed my time and
<v Speaker 3>that's like the whole thing you get. And I'm just like,
<v Speaker 3>I love him. He's so dumb good.
<v Speaker 2>Speaking of Van Slater like it we talked about this
<v Speaker 2>amongst ourselves, but like it's crazy how much he just
<v Speaker 2>looks like a fellow editor, Wesley LeBlanc, Like it is
<v Speaker 2>really tripping me up this game because this all I
<v Speaker 2>see is Wesley, Like I can imagine, like this was
<v Speaker 2>Wesley as a teenager. This is him right here. Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>I just want I need to talk to him, just like,
<v Speaker 2>does any of his characterization fit what you were at
<v Speaker 2>the same age at all?
<v Speaker 3>That's a great question for Wes. I don't see no overlap,
<v Speaker 3>you know, yeah, Like, yeah, Wes is kind of chill
<v Speaker 3>and uh just around for a good time. He definitely
<v Speaker 3>has more going on in his head than I feel
<v Speaker 3>like Slavey does at any given moment.
<v Speaker 2>Well, we're talking about eighteen, like roughly said, that's true.
<v Speaker 1>When I go to Japan with Wes for work trips,
<v Speaker 1>I'm like, what do you want to eat? He's like, middles,
<v Speaker 1>I see my time.
<v Speaker 3>Classic West Line.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah yeah, well cool, that is mixtape. I can't wait
<v Speaker 1>to play it. We'll have a hopefully a video review
<v Speaker 1>going up soon. It's been busy, so we didn't We
<v Speaker 1>didn't have it up quite at embargo, but we're working
<v Speaker 1>on it behind the scenes. If you're wanting to see
<v Speaker 1>some additional gameplay and like a formal review, of course,
<v Speaker 1>you can go and you can go and read Charles's
<v Speaker 1>review but if you want to wait and watch the
<v Speaker 1>video review that should be going up sometime soon, maybe
<v Speaker 1>up by the time you're listening to this. Actually, I
<v Speaker 1>do also.
<v Speaker 3>Want to call out it is I'm pulling up the
<v Speaker 3>price right now, oh Steam, but it is. It is not.
<v Speaker 3>It's not an expensive game. It's only like three hours long.
<v Speaker 3>So it's a thing that if you set aside like
<v Speaker 3>a Saturday afternoon, if you definitely play the whole thing through. Cool.
<v Speaker 3>It's seventeen ninety nine on Steam, right. Oh wow, Oh
<v Speaker 3>that's great. So it's a shorter game and more condensed experience,
<v Speaker 3>which is always that's always a thing I prefer, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>to be focused and good.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, well, Marcus, really really quick, I wanted to hear
<v Speaker 1>your thoughts on mouse Pi for Hire. We haven't talked
<v Speaker 1>about on the podcast yet. We of course did a review,
<v Speaker 1>video review and all that, but I wanted to hear
<v Speaker 1>what you thought of the game really really quick, five
<v Speaker 1>minutes or less, because then I have to go and
<v Speaker 1>take Wilson, my cat, to get his haircut.
<v Speaker 3>Willson.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, yeah, mouse Pi for Higher. I guess I should
<v Speaker 2>preface I'm still playing through it. I'm only a couple
<v Speaker 2>hours in But I was excited about this game since
<v Speaker 2>it was announced Scott years ago, someone that likes cartoons,
<v Speaker 2>old tiny cartoons and shooters. I like it so far.
<v Speaker 2>It's not like knocking my socks off. But as I
<v Speaker 2>was playing, I was like, this is like a good
<v Speaker 2>comfort food game for me, because it's like tapping its
<v Speaker 2>a two very different types of nostalgia for me, Like
<v Speaker 2>one the sort of boomer shooter angle, because this is
<v Speaker 2>very much inspired by like nineties doom or like shooters
<v Speaker 2>of that ilk Like you're you know, you're firing from
<v Speaker 2>the hip, there's no a Yeah, you're walking into just
<v Speaker 2>little rooms and just guys are pouring out of closets
<v Speaker 2>and you're just shooting your heads off with a bunch
<v Speaker 2>of really cartoony guns, and you're like, this is just
<v Speaker 2>good old, good old fashioned fun. And the other angle
<v Speaker 2>is just like, hey, it looks like a nineteen thirties
<v Speaker 2>black and white cartoon, which Charles I believe, you know
<v Speaker 2>I was alive for during that era.
<v Speaker 3>Uh yeah, I don't know. Yeah, that's nineteen hundreds nonsense.
<v Speaker 2>I was born in the nineteen hundreds. That is not incorrect.
<v Speaker 3>It's so last century.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, Marcus was around for the dust Bowl.
<v Speaker 2>Still still cleaning my ears from that.
<v Speaker 3>But yeah, just like this was playing Doom and then
<v Speaker 3>tuning the radio in too hear FDR's latest Address of
<v Speaker 3>the Nation.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah yeah, this is like now gradually becoming more and
<v Speaker 2>more ageous towards me.
<v Speaker 3>He's not even that all, but yeah, so like, I.
<v Speaker 2>It's cool to see, Like that's one of the reasons
<v Speaker 2>why I love Cuphead, right, Like Cuphead took that and
<v Speaker 2>and ran with it, and this is probably like like
<v Speaker 2>my favorite example of someone adapting that old style sense Cuphead. Uh,
<v Speaker 2>just seeing like the way enemies die, and also just
<v Speaker 2>like how it's the juxtaposition of like how hyper violent
<v Speaker 2>it actually is, but it's very much in the lens
<v Speaker 2>of like how violent cartoons were back then. It's like
<v Speaker 2>maybe slightly more violent than some of the more most
<v Speaker 2>violent examples of those cartoons, because you're like showering rooms
<v Speaker 2>and bloods, but then at the same time you're like
<v Speaker 2>blowing your heads off and you're just like whoa, they
<v Speaker 2>just like react for a while or like slate exactly,
<v Speaker 2>or you're like inflating their heads and their eyeballs become
<v Speaker 2>all big like a tex Avery character. It's like that
<v Speaker 2>stuff is really fun. The probably the thing that I'm
<v Speaker 2>a little maybe not disappointing. I don't think I expected
<v Speaker 2>much from this element of the game, but I wish
<v Speaker 2>it was still a little bit more of it is
<v Speaker 2>the actual detective side, because the idea of these games
<v Speaker 2>that you're playing as a private detective who is kind
<v Speaker 2>of like in this noir mystery, like it starts with
<v Speaker 2>the disappearance of this magician that he's friends with, and
<v Speaker 2>sort of like gradually, as any good detective story does,
<v Speaker 2>it sort of expands into a grander conspiracy. But like
<v Speaker 2>you're exploring these levels and as you're murdering every villainous
<v Speaker 2>mice that you run across, you're collecting clues and you
<v Speaker 2>bring them back to your apartment in between these missions
<v Speaker 2>and are sort of putting them on sort of like
<v Speaker 2>you know, like a flow chart board.
<v Speaker 1>Sure, and I.
<v Speaker 2>Wish there was a little bit more agency there, like
<v Speaker 2>because you're just kind of pacting the evidence that you
<v Speaker 2>find and then but it automatically sort of matches up
<v Speaker 2>the evidence like like like you have no there's no
<v Speaker 2>deduction needed on your side. So I kind of wish
<v Speaker 2>it lived up to that part of the the game's
<v Speaker 2>title a little bit more. I'm not saying it needed
<v Speaker 2>to be like the root trees are dead or anything
<v Speaker 2>like that, but I was kind of maybe like I
<v Speaker 2>was thinking like something in the Vein of the Mind
<v Speaker 2>palette and Alan Wake two would have been good where
<v Speaker 2>that's that's streamline, but you're still having to figure out
<v Speaker 2>where things go on your own. I think that would
<v Speaker 2>have been like the right balance for this game instead
<v Speaker 2>of having be automated. So that's kind of, like I said,
<v Speaker 2>that's probably my my biggest sort of like let down
<v Speaker 2>at the game by I said, I still have like
<v Speaker 2>plenty of game left to go, but I'm enjoying it
<v Speaker 2>so far. Like it's it's it's like I said, it's
<v Speaker 2>just like good comfort food, just like like a really
<v Speaker 2>competently made an enjoyable shooter with like a killer presentation
<v Speaker 2>on top and the voice acting strong and the music
<v Speaker 2>and stuff. Like it's just like I said, it's like
<v Speaker 2>playing through like an old cartoon, which is you know
<v Speaker 2>that it's the idea, but it's like the presentation really
<v Speaker 2>helps scary because like I just like looking at it.
<v Speaker 2>Thing in that game that's very fair to go to
<v Speaker 2>a level. Yeah, just seeing how these characters are animated
<v Speaker 2>and stuff. So yeah, I'm liking it so far. I'm
<v Speaker 2>gonna I'm definitely gonna see it through D again for sure.
<v Speaker 3>Cool.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, it seems like that kind of like visual novelty
<v Speaker 1>can really carry, especially a shorter, single player kind of
<v Speaker 1>shooter campaign.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, because I think it's like twelve hours.
<v Speaker 3>I think from what I've heard, Oh that's longer than
<v Speaker 3>I thought it was.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, that's what I'm hearing. I don't know how if
<v Speaker 2>that's like a completionist run, but I'm here like probably
<v Speaker 2>between ten and twelve hours.
<v Speaker 3>Nice.
<v Speaker 2>I think Charles's looking up on how long it.
<v Speaker 1>Go?
<v Speaker 3>Charles go, Yeah, twelve hours? How long to beat?
<v Speaker 2>Wow?
<v Speaker 3>Okay, well that's gonna do it.
