We'll talk about that in a moment, but UOD time me nothing to bring man, Thank you for helping out there. We're really looking forward to him in the second hour. But uh, first, we'll just jump in right into the big news from yesterday. I'm gonna go basketball first, odd logue, even though we're excited about so South Carolina. Yes, there was a bomb dropped in the Southeastern Conference about a guy that you and I kind of like a little bit. How about the news that Bruce Pearl stepping down after an eleven seasons seasons at Auburn on the day practice begins. A shocking development from the planes. He's handing it over to his son, Steven, who got a five year deal with no head coaching experience. That's another thing we'll talk about. They claim they did a national search. I don't know if I believe that. It seems that Bruce might have linen this up perfectly with the timeline, But Ron Lemon, did you ever expect anything like that to drop there on September twenty second? As basketball gets around the corner?

Speaker 5: You know, there were some rumblings that Pearl was maybe considering running for a political office in the future. Like I think he's really kind of leaning that way. I guess he decided the time is now. It's not the future. I'm doing it right now. So the timing is stinks. I mean, they had this all set up way to the first day of practice to make the announcement so Steven can hand it over to him as like quote interim coach. That was all set up so they wouldn't do a national search, they wouldn't hire somebody ahead of his own son Steven.

Speaker 4: Yeah, and with all the rumors of Bruce in the Senate run lately, even though he denied it last week, it looks like maybe he's denying it. He says he would even have to step away from Auburn if he were to do that, but instead he's taken on a new role at Auburn ambassador. I think even said I'm becoming a senator for Auburn. So he will be hanging me, believe me, maybe for a year or two. We'll see. I don't completely believe him. It would be perfect for a senator to say one thing and to do the opposite, So maybe he's walking right into that career change. But you know, as I mentioned, we're both kind of Bruce guys. Yeah, you go back to us I covering him in Evansville.

Speaker 5: I was there the day he was announced the head coach at the University of Southern Indiana USI in nineteen ninety four. It was his first head coaching job. He ended up winning a national title over there and went to the final game, the Champs WHI game two years in a row, won the title, and then he went on to Wisconsin Green Bay and then of course Tennessee and where he's been in Iowa. I'm a Bruce Pearl fan. I've always been a Bruce pro fan. I know he's my dad is not a Bruce Pearl fan. He's a little obnoxious, but to me, I like the guy and I wish him nothing but the best.

Speaker 4: Now, yeah, I was pro Bruce in the Kentucky coaching search. I'm not afraid to admit that I even had a ranking and he was ahead of Mark Pope. Now that I know what I know now, I would absolutely not want that. But I've always liked Bruce a little bit, even though he's been in a lot of rival schools, including Tennessee. But I feel like Shannon will have some opinions about how Steven goes from no coaching experience to just getting dad's job at a major program.

Speaker 3: It's interesting how that works. It kind of feels like he backed Auburn into a corner, you know, quitting with what I guess, a month and a half before the season starts. And if you're Auburn, how do you do a national coaching search that soon, right before the season's about to begin. So it almost feels like he left Auburn in a situation to where they really had no other option. But if you're Auburn, why do you sign the guys of five years? That would be my other question. So if Auburn wasn't necessarily happy with the situation, I wouldn't think they would sign him for five years as they did. Interesting to see what happens Bruce Pearl. It shocks me. I thought he would be a guy who would coach until he was ninety, you know. I thought he would be around forever. But he says he's going to be in an ambassador. I don't know what the job description looks like for that. I think that Bruce Pearl would be a great analyst if he ever wanted to do that on TV. But kind of a shocking news story coming out yesterday with this, especially this close to the basketball season starting Drew he.

I think he kind of backed Auburn into a corner because that's why he waited till this first day of practice to do it. I'm sure he knew this back in JUNI or July, but that would have given Auburn a chance to find somebody else.

He was trying to get into medical school, and I had some blog posts that weren't great for him on a Google search. It was more me mocking tennis. I think he even goes back to when he was a player, so he was playing just like respectfully, because we have a lot of mutual friends. I got nothing against Stephen Pearl, but you know, any Kentucky Tennessee game, we're getting our jokes off. So I'm you know, it's like, sure, we'll clean it up. It's also nothing. It went to medal school, medical school, and now he's the head coach of the of Auburn.

Speaker 4: Back to will it worked? Does anyone have any confidence? You know, I mean if you were to make the case for him, he has been a lead assistant there, Yes, since Bruce got the job. Now there's no head coaching experience. But if you wanted a little continuity, yes, you could argue that, you know, this big rise that Auburn has had there just in the final four, just won the SEC He's been there since Bruce flew in on the first day. Is there any you give that any credit?

Speaker 5: Where we're going to, you know, voicing our the will it work? Argument? He if you've watched Auburn the last couple of years, he is doing as big as an active role as a coach as Bruce. You know, he's the one kind of up directing the offense, calling the plays, directing the defense. And when Bruce looks to the bench for advice or you know, a question, he goes to Steven. So Steven, as you said, as lead assistant, has been acting the role as a head coach for a couple of years. I think so that part of it. Don't think it'd be a transition. He knows the locker room, he knows these kids. You recruited a lot of these kids. That will be an issue. I guess the issue is can he continue what Bruce built up there.

Speaker 3: I think he can if he relies heavily on his dad. I don't know how actively involved Bruce Pearl is still going to be behind the scenes. So if Bruce is still heavily involved, you know, and it can help out with recruiting. I don't know what the rules are on that. As an ambassador, if you're allowed to step in and help in any way. But if Bruce is involved in it, I think there is a chance that it could work. But if he's not, then I don't see it succeeding.

Speaker 4: There's one other angle to this is there is a new rule where they get to open the portal for thirty days for all those players and they've got some studs. So much we talk about continuity, but I mean they are able to leave if if they want to. It's just like football. I mean, this just happened to I guess Wawford recently with Perry.

They got a very talented roster, and those guys, by rule, have thirty days to look around if they want to.

I practice started yesterday for everyone, he goes up to twenty hours. They had the early morning when early morning practice we mentioned yesterday where we saw some highlights, got a Trent Noah corner three, and then I had a couple of good dunks from Malachim a Reno and a few unexpected players making highlights. But in the afternoon at two o'clock, they practiced in rap Arena for their there to today and uh, the Kentucky road Show from here in town happened to be there and tweeted out a picture. And in the background where Rondo and Tayshawn watching practice yesterday, we think about that Ryan.

Mark Stoops had his Monday press conference. I think we got our first update to a depth chart in forever. They usually kind of just send the same one out every week. But we addressed this briefly yesterday. But Ryan, as expected, Cutter Bowley is listed as quarterback one. He will get his first ever road start this upcoming Saturday in Columbia. Mark Stoops yesterday kind of said it was a number of factors, the way he played against Eastern Michigan. Kalzas still got some lingering issues, even though he didn't really get into how bad Kalzada's issue is. Did kind of mention that that played into the decision. But there's no more speculating. It's official. It's the Bully Show coming up on Saturday.

You know that he's coming off a bye week, He's had two weeks to work with the ones and need to get ready for South Carolina, a team that's kind of struggling a little bit. We both said South Carolina is the best. I mean, I hate to say that, but that night, the way the sandstorm and the white towels and they just you could tell the team of just feeding off that a little bit. It is it could be kind of an intimidating place to play down there.

Speaker 4: For sure. I'm confident Kentucky's gonna be in the game, just because the South Carolina Kentucky games always seem to be tight. I mean, they kind of pulled away with it last year and likes him, but it was it was closed for a lot of the game. Turnovers really got him. But I do worry that, you know, we haven't even been able to get some plays in on our home field, and we've had the mistakes that we've had better operational game management without roosters crowing in that loud environment. What is Shane. I heard you all say this on the pre show, how many games in a row they won there at night, like seven? They're like seven and.

Speaker 3: Oh seven or eight? I think maybe maybe eight, but regardless, a lot. So it's gonna be tough, we know that. But this is a chance for Cutter Bowley to go in there in a tough road environment and solidify himself as the guy for Kentucky.

But about nine years ago, I worked at ABC thirty six as an editor, first job out of college. It was a great time. Ryan, I think you understand this better than anybody else. When you work for a local news station, you end up wearing more than one hat. Oh yeah. And so this this particular weekend, the weekend sportscaster asked me to get footage, get video footage of the Cats game against Auburn, and so I was like, Okay, we'll twist my arm. Sure, I'll head on down there.

Speaker 7: So I'm I'm down there, and rub I'm on the court pre game for the first time we were. We were just coming off of Hommie Watch. So I was getting footage of Hamado on the court wearing some blue for the first time, and out of out the toe of my eye, I see a figure move and I hear these these stomping feet heading towards me, and I glad it's over. And I see Bruce Pearl looking like a raging bull, eyes locked right onto me, just storming towards me. And I'm wondering if I'm like too close to the auburn bench, am I like, am I in his way or something? And he just keeps coming towards me, And so at this one, I'm going, am I gonna have to post up against Bruce Pearl and defend my camera. I don't know what's going on. He gets with you about three feet of me, stops ed still pivots on his foot, and then this heart's head in the other way, leaving me in the dust. And I have no idea what was going on or why he was doing that, but it's left an impact on me. And I'm I think we're all gonna miss his presence here in the SEC.

They would buy buy Kentucky Wesleyan home season tickets right behind the opposing bench just so they could yell at Bruce Pearl when he came in for USI I mean it was a Stein brothers. They sit right behind. I guarantee you asked Bruce Pearl today. He knows exactly who the Stein Brothers are because they set right behind him every time he came into the sports center.

Okay, I'm in Florida and they're talking about Billy Napier. If he loses another game, he's out. What are your guy's opinion on firing a coach in the middle of a season.

Speaker 4: I appreciate the call when it comes to him. He's been on the hot seat so long I'm even surprised he might still be there. So if they were to let him go, I wouldn't think that'd be crazy at all. They're so disappointed in him. But at the same time, I think with him and the schedule, they have just let him go. Lose a few more times, let him get beat up a few more and then and then do it. I hope he makes it to the Kentucky game in November. I'm worried that's not going to be the case, but I would love to see him here. My big takeaway this summer or my big pick. We do like the predictions for YouTube video and you have to give your hot take, and mine was that Kentucky will beat Florida, and I wanted that to be like a nice upset pick, like wow, I what a call. But now it's looking like that might not even be that big a pig of a win. Obviously, it's nice to beat Florida, but I mean it's Kentucky cant even be favor of that game. Florida looks so bad.

He beat us kind of helped save his job because then they got on a kind of a streak and kind of played well at the end of the season. I'm sure they're hoping that's gonna happen this year, but I just don't see it, man. I mean, so they do have a tough question to make. Who's the ad down there. He's a he's a Scott Strickling Scott Strickland from a Kentucky guy here. So he's got to make that decision. Do we pull the trigger in the middle of the year or do we does he want to stay on as an interim you know, like a lame duck coach. I mean, they got that's a that's a tough call to make because you don't want to lose the recruits. You don't want to lose the fan base. You know, you got to keep everybody engaged somehow, But if you keep losing games, that ain't gonna happen.

They got Lagway issues too, whether it's you know, completely injury or him considering his future. Also, there was one piece of big news yesterday from the NBA. Won't wanted to get to real quickly. Red Shepherd is the starting point guard for a final that. I hate the circumstances for Fred van Fleet, but he tore his acl. Reid was already going to take up a big role. They promoted him to be the full time backup there. But now with the injury, it's the Reid and Durant show in Houston. Ryan woman, what a world are we living in? Read Shepherd, Kevin Durant and a contender in the NBA next year.

Speaker 5: If you're read Shepherd, you got to be thinking, Okay, you know, this is what I've been dreaming for my whole life. I hate that the injury happened, but they're handing the keys over to him. They just made this huge deal to get Durant. You know, Reed's name came up in the Durant deal and Houston did not want to give up Reed Shepherd because in the Durand deal, and obviously it's a good move and they need him now more than ever.

Speaker 4: Well, this summer they had an opportunity to go get another guard, assuming you know, Van Vleet would still be healthy, and they're like, no, we expect a big jump for read Shepherd. We're going all on him with Van Felip, but now with the injury, I mean, it's you got, Amen, Amen Thompson. I think he's gonna back him up a little bit. I think like Aaron Holliday is on the team, but we could be looking at like an NBA Semifinals with Reed Shepherd running the show next to an NBA legend to Kevin Durant. Just a huge opportunity for him. I know last year a little disappointing for a number three pick. He turned it on a little bit later in the year and he had a few games where we got to play some extended minutes. He looked well, but you know, spent some time in the G League. But they're all in on Reeds, So I'm looking forward to it.
