<v Speaker 3>from this scene, right, you know, we got We've got
<v Speaker 3>Miley Crue, we got Van Halen, Poison, Poison, I mean,
<v Speaker 3>so many bands that were doing this slle scene, guns
<v Speaker 3>and roses, and it seems like the story is kind
<v Speaker 3>of the same, Like everybody that was there had one
<v Speaker 3>shitty apartment that the whole band lived in, and every
<v Speaker 3>time the show was done, everybody would come back to
<v Speaker 3>that little hole, that rat infested hole and party with
<v Speaker 3>the band until all the sun broke through on the dawn.
<v Speaker 2>Absolutely, the rat Mansion West. We're going to talk about
<v Speaker 2>that today, right, absolutely, So what do we what's our
<v Speaker 2>comparison this week and next week?
<v Speaker 3>So it's kind of weird because we're kind of comparing
<v Speaker 3>bands that have a lot of incest going on between them. Really,
<v Speaker 3>I mean, like two thirds of this band played for
<v Speaker 3>Docin at some point. It's crazy, and so why not.
<v Speaker 3>They both had big albums in nineteen eighty five. We're
<v Speaker 3>going to compare Invasion of Your Privacy to doc and
<v Speaker 3>under Lock and Key. Under Lock and Key, it's gonna
<v Speaker 3>be great, man.
<v Speaker 2>These are crunchy, pop friendly rock riffs that are a
<v Speaker 2>bit grimy, you know, yeah, And it's gonna be fun
<v Speaker 2>to kind of get down and dirty with these.
<v Speaker 3>So, just for all of our audience out there, I
<v Speaker 3>was not super familiar with either one of these albums.
<v Speaker 3>This album we're covering today, Rat, I at least know
<v Speaker 3>the hits that came off of this album Docin. I
<v Speaker 3>got nothing. I have no source, no frame of reference,
<v Speaker 3>and so sometimes that can be a bad thing. Like Rambo,
<v Speaker 3>you missed the moment, yeah I did. But then when
<v Speaker 3>we did the Cult, I absolutely loved that album. Had
<v Speaker 3>never heard that album before, and at this point I
<v Speaker 3>still haven't heard under Lock and Key. I don't know
<v Speaker 3>if I'm going to like it or not, but I'm
<v Speaker 3>ready to go. And for Rat, I got to listen
<v Speaker 3>to the whole album instead of just the hits, and
<v Speaker 3>so I'm excited to talk about it. See how we got.
<v Speaker 2>Here, Well, before we dive into it, you touched on
<v Speaker 2>something there.
<v Speaker 3>You know.
<v Speaker 2>We did talk about the cult last summer and we
<v Speaker 2>matched it up with Great White, who was another dirty,
<v Speaker 2>grimy LA band.
<v Speaker 3>For that's right.
<v Speaker 2>So let's get into it. Rat Invasion of your privacy.
<v Speaker 3>Here we go. Track one, You're in love, So right
<v Speaker 3>out of the gate, I'm getting some really heavy Eddie
<v Speaker 3>van Halen Ain't talking about love vibes going on from
<v Speaker 3>this one. Love the strong, full punchy guitar, dut d
<v Speaker 3>d d da du du du du. Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>I think you can definitely feel the Van Halen influence.
<v Speaker 2>I don't think they would shy away from that at all.
<v Speaker 3>No, I mean it was there. It was their inspiration
<v Speaker 3>for moving to LA like this. This was a San
<v Speaker 3>Diego band initially, and they were doing great on the
<v Speaker 3>San Diego scene and then Steven Piercy and Robin Crosby
<v Speaker 3>decided to go up to LA and listen to this
<v Speaker 3>band called Van Halen, And I mean they're they're still
<v Speaker 3>playing in the Troubadour back then. But he said they
<v Speaker 3>were playing as though they were playing for an arena
<v Speaker 3>full of people, like huge speakers, David Lee Roth jumping
<v Speaker 3>off of the speakers. I mean it was they said,
<v Speaker 3>we got to get up here and do that too.
<v Speaker 2>Van Halen, one of the most influential bands of all time,
<v Speaker 2>basically gave birth to all these hair bantl bands from
<v Speaker 2>the La Strip.
<v Speaker 3>Absolutely.
<v Speaker 2>Have you seen the video for your in Love?
<v Speaker 1>No?
<v Speaker 3>I have no.
<v Speaker 2>Okay, I've got to show this to you because the
<v Speaker 2>introduction clip is so funny because it has a familiar face.
<v Speaker 2>Let me know when you recognize this character who's very
<v Speaker 2>prominent eighties person.
<v Speaker 1>Are you in love with him and not with me?
<v Speaker 1>I guess I am Jones.
<v Speaker 3>Are you gonna marry him? Wait a minute, I can
<v Speaker 3>have a list proposing from mass Okay, you really mean that.

<v Speaker 2>You recognize that guy? Yes, mister Reagan, mister Ronald Reagan.
<v Speaker 2>That comes from a movie that I've seen. I've seen
<v Speaker 2>two movies listed.
<v Speaker 3>Uh huh.
<v Speaker 2>That intro clip where he's like, are you saying you're
<v Speaker 2>in love with him and not with me?
<v Speaker 3>Yeah?
<v Speaker 2>Could be from a movie called Santa Fe Trail from
<v Speaker 2>nineteen forty.
<v Speaker 3>Or from Brother Rat Uh well, thirty eight gotcha.
<v Speaker 2>Pretty interesting, see good old Ronnie.
<v Speaker 3>Uh yeah, I mean right at the height of the
<v Speaker 3>Reagan era too. Yeah, nineteen eighty five.
<v Speaker 2>Man, So I don't know if you've heard the story
<v Speaker 2>behind this particular song lay on me. Okay. So the
<v Speaker 2>producer for this album is a guy named bo Hill.
<v Speaker 2>Bowhill produced Out of the Cellar, which came out the
<v Speaker 2>prior year. Out of the Cellar has wanted man lack
<v Speaker 2>of communication. I mean, their biggest song, their signature song,
<v Speaker 2>Round and Round. Right, So Bowhill was brought back in
<v Speaker 2>as producer. Now, they didn't really get along so well
<v Speaker 2>with him.
<v Speaker 3>He was he ran a tight ship and this is
<v Speaker 3>not a tight ship kind of band.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, you know I heard him talk about that.
<v Speaker 3>He said.
<v Speaker 2>So we'll talk about Warren D. Martini in his youth.
<v Speaker 2>I mean he's twenty twenty one or so when this
<v Speaker 2>album comes out, Yeah, join the band at eighteen Yeah,
<v Speaker 2>basically overnight.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>So Bowhill was like, you know, he knew what the
<v Speaker 2>budget was. He said, Warren kind of had this image
<v Speaker 2>that he had a suitcase full of cash and then
<v Speaker 2>whatever he didn't spend he gets to keep. He's like, no,
<v Speaker 2>I just like kept track of the receipts and like
<v Speaker 2>they would reimburse, you know, the Rat corporation. He's like,
<v Speaker 2>they had it all wrong, but they all it was
<v Speaker 2>always concerned about budget.
<v Speaker 3>Okay.
<v Speaker 2>But Doug Morris was the president of Atlantic Records, okay,
<v Speaker 2>and bo Hill was kind of his friend, kind of
<v Speaker 2>his go to guy, and was really good at keeping
<v Speaker 2>bands on track and on budget. And he said that
<v Speaker 2>when he called after they had kind of put all
<v Speaker 2>these songs out, Doug Morris was like, so, what song
<v Speaker 2>do you think should be the lead track? Bo Hill
<v Speaker 2>was like, it's clear, it's lay It Down. It's the
<v Speaker 2>best song on the album. And Doug Morris goes, I
<v Speaker 2>think it's going to be You're in Love, and he said.
<v Speaker 2>Bo Hill was like devastated. He's like, we got to
<v Speaker 2>come out with our best foot forward on this one.
<v Speaker 2>And Doug said, you're overruled, right.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah.
<v Speaker 2>But here's the interesting thing, I can't find any evidence
<v Speaker 2>that that was actually the case. Bo Hill was recalling
<v Speaker 2>this story, but I think that lay It Down was
<v Speaker 2>the first video really.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, Well, so It's interesting. You know, we text each
<v Speaker 3>other and call each other as we're preparing for these episodes,
<v Speaker 3>and you were telling me about bow Hill, and you
<v Speaker 3>were like, here's this with this band called Shanghai, and
<v Speaker 3>you give me the story about you know, had they
<v Speaker 3>had one album and it didn't sotle. It didn't sell
<v Speaker 3>any right.
<v Speaker 2>He said it sold exactly zero copies.
<v Speaker 3>So I was like, man, I've I know, I've heard
<v Speaker 3>of Shanghai the Band before. Somehow it's come up in
<v Speaker 3>the last six years of searching music. Shanghai the Band
<v Speaker 3>has come up before. And so just a few minutes
<v Speaker 3>after our phone conversation, I sent you a text and
<v Speaker 3>bow Hill was the keyboardist that came in and took
<v Speaker 3>over when they changed the band's name to Shanghai. But
<v Speaker 3>he took over for someone named Holly Knight, who we've
<v Speaker 3>talked about a million, ga jillion time because she's written
<v Speaker 3>so many incredible hits, lots of pop hits. Oh absolutely,
<v Speaker 3>Milli Vanilly blame it on the Rain, among many others. Yeah,
<v Speaker 3>but oh yes. So I was like, I knew I'd
<v Speaker 3>heard Shanghai before. So he was keyboardist for them, but
<v Speaker 3>he had also already started producing at this point and
<v Speaker 3>obviously a good producer. All of these songs have a
<v Speaker 3>similar sound, and that I would call the Bowhill sound.
<v Speaker 3>But talking about Warren D. Martini, like when they first
<v Speaker 3>got together and started the recording process, he had had
<v Speaker 3>he had no idea about how different things were, and
<v Speaker 3>he couldn't find the right sound for his guitar. And
<v Speaker 3>the sound for the guitar is huge, like you can't
<v Speaker 3>just only be a great player, which he absolutely is,
<v Speaker 3>I mean, unsung guitar god, guitar guy. And how is
<v Speaker 3>he not more talked about. I mean with a name
<v Speaker 3>like D Martini, that's a fantastic name. Yeah it is,
<v Speaker 3>I do you know? But anyway, he was he you know,
<v Speaker 3>he comes in and they've got these Marshall half stacks
<v Speaker 3>that are huge, ready to go, but it doesn't sound right,
<v Speaker 3>and he's like, you know, I just wish it could
<v Speaker 3>kind of sound like my practice amp at home. And
<v Speaker 3>he's like, well, bring it over and he's like, you
<v Speaker 3>could do that. You could just put the practice amp
<v Speaker 3>in the recording studio. He's like yeah, So they literally
<v Speaker 3>take the amp for the practice amp and they hook
<v Speaker 3>it to the speakers the larger cabinet speakers that they're using,
<v Speaker 3>and that's how you find his signature sound on all
<v Speaker 3>these albums.
<v Speaker 2>That's great, that's great. You know, I heard Bohill tell
<v Speaker 2>his story. So Bo was constantly at odds with the
<v Speaker 2>guys in rat, Right.
<v Speaker 3>He said, first of.
<v Speaker 2>All, every one of them thought they were great songwriters,
<v Speaker 2>and so they would bring in all these songs and everybody,
<v Speaker 2>of course one of their two or three songs on
<v Speaker 2>the album, well, Bo had to kind of make the
<v Speaker 2>list and say these are our best, these are not
<v Speaker 2>going to make it. These are going to make it.
<v Speaker 2>And so he said, at all times, at least two
<v Speaker 2>of the guys, two of the five were just over
<v Speaker 2>the top pissed at him all the time, one hundred
<v Speaker 2>percent of the time.
<v Speaker 3>Right.
<v Speaker 2>But he also would get in trouble because he said
<v Speaker 2>one time they left they had to take a break
<v Speaker 2>to go on tour, like they's got this opportunity to
<v Speaker 2>go to Japan and tour. And so he's left working
<v Speaker 2>with the track and he's mixing and he's like, gosh,
<v Speaker 2>I really need Warren to play another decord. And he's
<v Speaker 2>like he looked over and he's like there's Warren's.
<v Speaker 3>Guitar and I'm here.
<v Speaker 2>He's like, I'm not a great guitar player, but I
<v Speaker 2>can play a decord.
<v Speaker 3>You could play a dcord, right, So he's like so
<v Speaker 3>he went up.
<v Speaker 2>I was like oh, And then they were like, you
<v Speaker 2>dared to play his stuff on the out and so
<v Speaker 2>they were just like always mad at him for something.
<v Speaker 2>I did watch this video in the era of hair
<v Speaker 2>bands and you know, showing babes and you know, showing
<v Speaker 2>rock and you know, I mean, you're struck by lightning
<v Speaker 2>is one of the lyrics in this, right, you only
<v Speaker 2>live to have fun. They're they're they're advertising their brand
<v Speaker 2>of fun.
<v Speaker 3>Rock here, right.
<v Speaker 2>Gabauchery, yeah, oh my gosh, debauchery. Yes, But in the
<v Speaker 2>video there's a girl holding up a sign says eat meat,
<v Speaker 2>I'm cheese.
<v Speaker 3>That's what we're dealing with here. Is this the one
<v Speaker 3>where like Robin Crosby pulls off a bra or something
<v Speaker 3>that somebody has thrown at him. Probably probably in this video.
<v Speaker 2>So you've got the Ronald Reagan clip at the beginning,
<v Speaker 2>You've got a clip featuring Betty Boop, Buster Keaton, Mickey Rooney,
<v Speaker 2>Frank Sinatra, Lucy like I love Lucy Bob Hope. And
<v Speaker 2>then you have the kind of infamous clip from e
<v Speaker 2>T where Elliott is like and Erica Alaniac are like,
<v Speaker 2>he's getting ready to kiss her and he's releasing the
<v Speaker 2>frogs and he's learning how to like you know what
<v Speaker 2>I'm talking about.
<v Speaker 3>That is watching the Romantic movie and it's getting translated
<v Speaker 3>to Elliott at the school.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, that clip is in this video.
<v Speaker 3>So either this was an absolute licensing nightmare or they
<v Speaker 3>just use all that stuff without permission. And I'm going
<v Speaker 3>with probably option number two.
<v Speaker 2>It's possible. Yeah, And of course at the very end, yeah,
<v Speaker 2>you have a clip between Groucho Marx and a smoking
<v Speaker 2>hot Marilyn Monroe when she's still a redhead the.
<v Speaker 3>Little Norma Jean Playboy days. That will not be the
<v Speaker 3>last time that Playboy comes up in this episode.
<v Speaker 2>Yes, all right, I love this song. What a great
<v Speaker 2>song to kick off.
<v Speaker 3>With a great opening track. Yeah, I agree. I don't
<v Speaker 3>know that it's the first single you release, but it
<v Speaker 3>is definitely a fantastic opening track. Next song, yeahlet's do it.
<v Speaker 2>Next song on the album is called never Use Love.
<v Speaker 3>Okay, another fantastic killer Crunchy guitar opening. The great thing
<v Speaker 3>about this is that you really get to hear the
<v Speaker 3>two guitars going of Robin Crosby and Warren D. Martini
<v Speaker 3>at the same time, you know, kind of answering each
<v Speaker 3>other back and forth with this. Now, you know, we
<v Speaker 3>talked just a bit ago about Robin and Steven really
<v Speaker 3>being the originators of this band, and several of the
<v Speaker 3>band members and we'll talk about it in a minute,
<v Speaker 3>played with other bands, including docin Yes, and ultimately they
<v Speaker 3>get this, they get their lineup together, but their lineup
<v Speaker 3>includes Robin and another guitarist named Jake E. Lee as
<v Speaker 3>the other guitarist, right, Yeah, Now, Jake E Lee was
<v Speaker 3>a little bit older than Warren D. Martini and at
<v Speaker 3>the time that they are that rat is just about
<v Speaker 3>to hit it big, Like they're really just about to
<v Speaker 3>go big. Jake gets this opportunity that you just can't
<v Speaker 3>say no to.
<v Speaker 2>So he gets an opportunity to replace Randy Rhodes in
<v Speaker 2>Ozzy Osbourne's band.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, so go back and check out our No More
<v Speaker 3>Tears episode to hear the Randy Rhoades tragedy story. But
<v Speaker 3>obviously Ozzy's in full tilt when that event occurs, and
<v Speaker 3>so he needs a replacement guitarist.
<v Speaker 2>Right, So Jake E Lee goes and auditions for Ozzie's
<v Speaker 2>band yep. And you know who else is there besides
<v Speaker 2>every other guitar player in town is George Lynch.
<v Speaker 3>George Lynch, the guitarist for Docin.
<v Speaker 2>For Docin, and George Lynch said that he really felt
<v Speaker 2>like he did well in the audition, felt like he
<v Speaker 2>killed it. He felt like he was kind of the
<v Speaker 2>leader in the clubhouse. And he said he was standing
<v Speaker 2>there and he was talking to Jakie Lee and they
<v Speaker 2>were just kind of conversing about their audition or whatever,
<v Speaker 2>and he said Ozzie walked right up to him and said,
<v Speaker 2>he turned to Jake E Lee, He's like, do you
<v Speaker 2>want the job?
<v Speaker 3>Mate?
<v Speaker 2>And Jake said yeah, you know, and He's like, great,
<v Speaker 2>you got it. He's like, you blew it. I kept
<v Speaker 2>on walking, Yeah, he said. George was just like stunned,
<v Speaker 2>embarrassed and devastated. Yeah, and he had to take his
<v Speaker 2>tail and go back to Docin.
<v Speaker 3>Good old Ozzy man, Yeah, God rest his soul. He
<v Speaker 3>just passed.
<v Speaker 2>We lost him yesterday.
<v Speaker 3>Yesterday. Man, that's a tough loss. By the way, yeah.
<v Speaker 2>I got to tell you the story how Robin Crosby
<v Speaker 2>got into Rat Okay.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, So Stephen Piercy.
<v Speaker 2>Had been in multiple bands, right, including I think one
<v Speaker 2>called Fire Doome, one called Crystal Pistol.
<v Speaker 3>Crystal Pistol, with the pistol spelled like a with a y,
<v Speaker 3>like crystal Crystal pistol, not subtle, right, yep.
<v Speaker 2>And so so Stephen Piercy's from San Diego, Jakie Lee's
<v Speaker 2>from San Diego. Actually, Warren de martiniz from San Diego. Well,
<v Speaker 2>Robin Crosby's from San Diego.
<v Speaker 3>Okay.
<v Speaker 2>So Robin had been hanging around. He was a guitar
<v Speaker 2>player and he started bugging Jakie Lee. He's like, hey,
<v Speaker 2>don't you want this to be a two guitar band guy?
<v Speaker 2>And Jake's like, dude, I think I can handle it.
<v Speaker 2>And he just persisted, and Robin was like, hey, listen,
<v Speaker 2>you get all the solos, you do whatever. I'll just
<v Speaker 2>stand over here. You tell me what to do, I'll
<v Speaker 2>do it. And so finally Jake felt bad for him.
<v Speaker 2>It's like, all right, Robin, you can come in, but
<v Speaker 2>you got to do what I say. And he said
<v Speaker 2>as soon as Robin joined the band. He's like, okay,
<v Speaker 2>now which solo? Am I getting on this too? And
<v Speaker 2>just used his leverage to get in there.
<v Speaker 3>And he's six', five built like a brick, house, massive
<v Speaker 3>like a football, player with a. Guitar so hard to
<v Speaker 3>say no to this.
<v Speaker 2>Guy, Yes and while we're, THERE i, mean do you
<v Speaker 2>know who his high school sweetheart?
<v Speaker 3>Was, well she's involved in several of these songs and.
<v Speaker 3>Albums it's Miss Tawny.
<v Speaker 2>Katine This Tawny kataine back again after we covered her
<v Speaker 2>extensively during Our White snake.
<v Speaker 3>Episodes oh, There god rest her. Soul but, So Jake
<v Speaker 3>ely is the lead guitarist who's now sharing lead guitar
<v Speaker 3>With Robin. Crosby and one of the band names Was Mickey,

<v Speaker 3>There But Steven piercy wanted something more punchy and taking
<v Speaker 3>the cue From, kiss he just took just the rat
<v Speaker 3>all capitol, letters double letters at the. End you know
<v Speaker 3>it styled it that. Way. Yep But jake E lee
<v Speaker 3>gets the job to take over For Randy rhoades For. Ozzy,
<v Speaker 3>okay so they need another guitarist and they need another guitarist,
<v Speaker 3>fast and So JAKE E lee, says you need to
<v Speaker 3>Call WARREN. D martini and they're, like isn't he still
<v Speaker 3>in high school and he's, like, no he graduated last.
<v Speaker 3>Year he just started junior, college, Right so he's living
<v Speaker 3>with his, mom going to junior. College and they call
<v Speaker 3>him up and they're, Like, warren how'd you like to
<v Speaker 3>come play guitar for? Us and he's, like, okay let
<v Speaker 3>me think about. IT i BET i can come next
