My Vacation Was Almost RUINED...

Katie Van Slyke - Katching Up With Katie

Vacation recap time. 🌓✨ I’m finally back and catching y’all up on Antigua (and the whole ā€œhow do you even say it?ā€ debate), our very questionable fishing excursion, and why I’m not sure all-inclusives are really for me.

We’re also talking spa days, couples massages, facials, and the funniest parts of traveling with other people around you… including some truly unhinged plane stories. šŸ˜…

Then Nate catches us up on his trip back home to Arkansas, testing Starlink on the road, and a Christmas prank that still makes me laugh.

If you watched the KVS Christmas special, you’ll definitely want to hear the behind-the-scenes ā€œcouple weeks recapā€ right after. šŸŽ„

Intro / Welcome back
0:00
Welcome back to Katching Up With Katie. It’s been a couple weeks. I actually went on a little vacation. So, we went to Antigga. We’ve been back for a few days now.
0:09
This will be airing after the Christmas Cup, the KVS Christmas special. So, if you haven’t watched that, go watch that.
Vacations and travel catch-up
0:17
So, I guess let’s just catch up, because Katching Up With Katie. I know that Nate
0:23
went on a vacation. I went on a vacation. So, I guess it’s just like, let’s chat about it.
0:31
Antigga, were you trying to prove that I was saying it wrong? No. That’s how every I was not trying, I was not trying to prove that you said it wrong. I
0:45
say it wrong. Antigua. That’s how I thought it was. And that’s what everyone thought it was. But I thought you just came back from there. There’s no way you’re saying it wrong.
0:53
Well, I found out there’s an Antigua city and an Antigga country. They’re spelled the same.
1:01
Oh, okay. And so depending on where you are, it’s said differently. Okay. I could have got my wires crossed, but I was
1:08
like, Antigga. I was just in shock and disbelief. I had to double confirm my incorrectness.
1:15
I just remember, but that was, I was also on the trip. You learn something new every day.
1:21
Are we doing that? Sure. Okay, real quick, how we say it. Are we like, we ran into Abigail while we were there.
1:28
No, they were dating. I don’t care. I actually, like two days ago, on the way to Christmas, I told him, I was like, I’m going to post some pictures of us.
1:38
Okay. It was a really fun, relaxing trip, honestly. Needed that sleep. I slept a lot on the trip, honestly. We didn’t do any excursions.
1:52
Jonathan and his brother did a fishing trip. Like they went on a horrific fishing
1:57
trip. It wasn’t good. Oh no. That’s a bummer too. No. I felt so bad. So we had decided, hey, if y’all are going to go fishing,
2:08
we’re just going to go to the spa. We’re going to go get a massage while y’all are gone.
2:14
Hey y’all, it’s Katie. Did you know that you could bring a little piece of Running Springs into your home? And just so you know, if you’re a paid subscriber on TikTok, Facebook, or Instagram,
2:24
you will always get a 25% off discount with your subscriber code on the merch store.
2:30
We’ve got the cutest merch featuring all the farm favorites like our mini cows, mares, and foals, goats, donkeys, and of course, the mini horses. You’ll find t-shirts,
2:39
cozy hoodies, zip-ups, mugs, and so much more. Some of the designs are limited edition,
2:44
so when they’re gone, they’re gone. But don’t worry, a few favorites stick around at least until the end of the year. We’ve also started adding fun new things like
2:52
diamond art kits, paint by number sets, shoe charms, and even coloring books. And trust me,
2:57
there’s a lot more coming later this year, so check back often and don’t forget to join the email list so you don’t miss out on the new drops. So head over to katyvanslyke.net to get all
3:06
of your favorites before they’re gone. And now back to the video. So, I have a lot of things about this trip because I’ve now been to two Sandals. I don’t
3:18
think I warrant an all-inclusive because I don’t drink. And so, I think a lot of the cost that’s built into the trip is the drink package, and I don’t think that’s… yeah, I think
3:29
I could probably plan a trip a little bit more accordingly to what I need. For the same money.
3:34
But anyway, so they booked an excursion to go fishing. Jonathan asked profusely trying to
3:43
figure out some sort of details on this trip. He was like, ā€œWhat are we fishing for? Where are we going? Can we have some details?ā€ And every time he’d be like, ā€œCan I get
3:53
some details on this trip?ā€ And they’d be like, ā€œYou leave at 7.ā€ And he’s like, ā€œOkay. What else?ā€ Like, something else. And so what it ended up being was it was a
4:04
big boat, and it was I think six people fishing with the guide, or the captain, whatever.
4:13
And I don’t know if it was due to the waves. There was like 10-foot waves the whole time.
4:19
Oh, it was due to the waves that they were trolling. Yeah. So trolling, if you don’t know fishing, you can either cast, jig, or troll. Trolling is where
4:30
you literally put the fishing lines on the end of the boat and you just pull it through the water
4:35
and you hope something gets it. Just drive around. And so because they couldn’t cast because it was
4:40
so horrible weather-wise and wave-wise, they just sat there getting beat to death.
4:48
There was three fish caught the entire time. And Austin and Jonathan were trying to be the nice guys, so they let the other people do it first, and then they didn’t catch anything else again.
4:57
Well, I guess Austin got one. But yeah, they came back sick. It
5:06
was like an hour car drive there, hour back. It had to be plum across the whole island.
5:12
Jonathan probably. Yeah, it’s not very big. No, Jonathan was like, I sat there and I heard the captain say, ā€œWe’ll be back 10
5:21
to 12,ā€ or something like that. And he said, I sat there and I kept looking at my phone. It was like in five-minute increments because I was just trying not to throw up. I’ve never been
5:29
sick in my life on a boat and it was just rough. There was a husband and a wife. Jonathan’s like,
5:35
ā€œThey’re divorced now.ā€ One hundred percent. Like, it was the worst. The other guy, I think there was four people. The other guy was just there by himself,
5:44
and he said his wife was going to come, but he that day was like, ā€œYou’re not allowed
5:51
to come because we’re going to get into an argument,ā€ and he didn’t want it to happen. And he was like, ā€œI’m so glad she didn’t go. I would have to have a helicopter come pick us
6:02
up if my wife had come on this trip.ā€ And Jonathan’s like, ā€œI think same.ā€ And I’m like, I’m so glad. And then I accidentally, I didn’t ever
6:12
say ā€œcouples.ā€ I just booked it on our room to go get massages and facials. Because we were like, if
6:21
they’re going to be gone for four hours, let’s go. And so we walk in, they’re like,
6:27
ā€œCouples massage,ā€ and we were like… and they’re like, ā€œThat’s what we booked for you.ā€ And I was like, oh. So we had a couple’s massage. I was like,
Abigail and I had couples massages
6:39
you don’t have to, because me and Jonathan had one too, I was like, you don’t have to put our hands together at the end. So we just got massaged right next to each other,
6:48
but it was fine. So a couple’s massage is just a regular massage in the same room. You’re just in the same room. And then they join hands at the end. We didn’t do that.
6:59
But also, when you go into the room, they’re like, okay, hang your robe on the door and then go get
7:07
under the thing. And the door is across the room from the bed, a ways away. So we’re like,
7:13
okay, well, who goes first? Oh, it was good though.
7:24
The only thing is that I have an issue with this massage. It was fine. And the facial I
7:30
actually really enjoyed. I need to force myself to go do more facials and stuff.
7:37
We asked for a head massage as part of it. It was supposed to be 30 minutes as a scalp
7:42
massage. You can only, with just your fingertips, no nails, you can only do
7:48
this for so long in the same place before I’m like, this is nothing. All right, let’s just…
7:57
And so at one point I was like, do you mind just playing with my hair? Because I was like, just do some scratches. Some spoke. I spoke. I was like, I heard it. I was
8:10
like, can you just play with my hair or something? She’s like, okay. Starts slicking it back, just like petting me like a dog. There’s oil in it at this point too. And so it’s
8:19
just like, wow, I can’t believe you spoke. I’ve only gotten a massage a few times in
8:27
my life. And I mean, they probably could have beat me up with a hammer and I would be like,
8:33
they’d be like, ā€œToo rough?ā€ I’d be like, ā€œNope.ā€ See, maybe it’s because Jonathan and I,
8:40
we’ve been doing this for years, our date night. Sometimes we go months without it, and then sometimes we do it pretty frequently. Usually we do it more during the winter. We get
8:48
massaged, and we have one massage therapist that comes to our house and does it.
8:53
And so we know her, and so I get massages at least six times a year, if not more. And
9:01
we talk the whole time, or we have a really open dialogue. I’m like, right there’s really too hard.
9:08
And so I don’t know if I’m just used to that. I would like that. I would like to be able to say,
9:13
ā€œActually, that’s a problem spot. Can you do a little more right there?ā€ But you get in the room and then they, it’s so quiet. They just leave you in there alone for
9:25
like five, six, seven, it could be 30 minutes by yourself before they come in. And by that point, it’s like you’ve been quiet long enough that when they come in, it feels uncomfortable.
9:38
Is that your first massage? Yes. And they come in, they’re being really quiet, they got that peaceful music going,
9:47
and they’re like, ā€œIs that enough pressure?ā€ And I’m going to say the bare
9:54
minimum in this moment because I feel awkward. Yeah. Like when I turned over, I think it was
10:01
the first time she said something to me. She’s like, ā€œAre you enjoying your massage so far?ā€
10:07
And I was like, okay, so here’s the thing. That massage was not a good introduction into massages.
10:16
Because here’s the thing. The way I would describe it is, I’d rather have it than not, but that’s
10:23
not what I would describe as a good one. It was a lot of just like this rather than
10:29
like this. So it was a lot of, we were slick with oil, so it was a lot of just rubbing in
10:36
big circles and not a lot of getting in there. There was one spot on me that she was digging
10:43
into, but then the rest of the time I was kind of like, is this a good massage or is this… no,
10:52
it’s not. It was not like a mid massage. And after that experience I was like,
10:58
I enjoyed it. Would I pay to do it again? No. Yeah, that’s the thing. I wouldn’t quit massages
11:08
because of that massage. I’ll try again. I loved the facial. I really, really
11:13
liked the facial. I’d like to find somewhere and do that around here. But anyway, is that the first facial you’ve had? Second, I think. I got one.
11:23
There are better facials too. If you liked that one, there are definitely better facials. Yeah. I went to one and it hurt doing all the extractions.
11:32
Oh yeah. Did she do that to you? Yeah. But I think because they had steamed my face so much and done all the prep, it didn’t hurt really. It didn’t hurt so much as it
11:42
was uncomfortable, and I wasn’t expecting that. Because I was like, this is going to be relaxing, and then it’s like, I’m going to get these blackheads right here, and I’m like, okay. I
11:52
thought I was just taking my nose off. I feel like because of all the prep, they were popping out easy, so she wasn’t really having to do much.
12:00
Yeah, mine were, they were in there. We pretty much had breakfast every
12:07
morning together, and then we had a cabana every day so that we had a home base. And honestly we probably didn’t even need it this trip. I just remember last time we went to Sandals it was
12:16
very crowded and hard to get chairs and stuff. So we went ahead and booked a little cabana area.
12:22
And so then we would just kind of hang out at the cabana all day, go back and forth,
12:28
go nap, come back, things like that. Am I allowed, now that it’s out of the bag, am I
12:36
allowed to give it to him to post the canoe video? Oh, sure. It’s a kayak. The kayak video.
12:45
So there was one day they did more fun stuff at the pool towards the end of our trip. They didn’t do all that fun stuff in the middle. So one of the days they had a kayak race in
12:57
the pool. They had a race with couples. I was so sick and I chickened out. Jonathan,
13:06
at one point we were like, we should do it, but then we convinced them to do it. So the first partner raced down in the kayak, then usually it was the wife or the girlfriend
13:18
would get in at the end and then race back. And they were cheated. So they were cheated.
13:25
The time that we were trying to beat was 43 seconds. We got 41. So we beat the
13:31
shortest time out of like 20. Like, they won. And then after us, this other couple goes,
13:40
and the guy that was timing it, the host or whatever, he was like, ā€œThey tied for 41.ā€
13:51
And then all these people were like, ā€œBut I was recording it and I think they got 40,ā€ and so
14:01
they reviewed a bunch of videos that people had taken on their phone. It was just kind of extra.
14:08
And then decided that they beat us by one second. They didn’t review ours,
14:14
but they looked at theirs like three times and were like, ā€œOh, okay. You won.ā€ And it didn’t help that it was like a parallel universe of who won. The guy looked just like
14:27
Austin, and we were like, ā€œThat’s your evil twin.ā€ We’re like, ā€œThat’s your arch nemesis.ā€ And then he actually was, because you’re upside down. He cheated us.
14:37
Anyway, it was very fun. Other than that, we only had a
I was food shamed
14:42
couple of instances that weren’t the best. Which was just other people being kind of gross. I’ve
14:50
talked about it on Snapchat a little bit. So like, hibachi is my favorite food ever.
14:57
Really? Oh yeah. I didn’t know that about you. Really? I don’t think I did. Well, hibachi as in fried rice, chicken on the grill, and rice with no vegetables.
15:11
So basically chicken and rice is her favorite meal, but like fried rice, right?
15:17
Okay. Right. And so I generally order my fried rice, I’m like, can y’all not put veggies in it? And the tiny little, I pick through
15:28
it. Just like a few peas. Can you pick those out? No, they just didn’t add them in. They weren’t
15:37
added in. That’s why I specified at the beginning. I said, ā€œSir, I would not like any vegetables
15:42
on the side. If I could have just chicken and steak.ā€ Because you don’t order, they give you,
15:51
everyone gets the same thing. So everyone gets a little bit of everything on the menu. And I was like, I’m not going to eat the seafood. Can I just have the steak and chicken, and if you
16:01
don’t mind, my portion of rice, if you don’t put… And it was easy. It was that simple. It wasn’t
16:07
creating a stink. It wasn’t like whatever. So we were sitting there, because at hibachi,
16:14
you know, you sit with strangers if you don’t take up the whole table. So there was, they told us
16:19
they were 60, a 60-year-old, they said they were from Liverpool. British couple, English couple.
16:27
Everything was nice enough at first. We were chatty, small talk. It was fine. It was nice.
16:35
Everyone was just chatting back and forth waiting on the food. Well, I fascinated them with my choice of no vegetables, and they don’t know me normally,
16:46
so they don’t know this is my norm. So I was like, ā€œYeah, if I could just have mine with no vegetables.ā€ She’s like, ā€œNo vegetables? What?ā€
16:53
And I was like, ā€œOh yeah. I’m on vacation. If I don’t want vegetables, I’m not going to eat vegetables.ā€ And she was like, ā€œOh, okay.ā€
17:01
And so she was thinking about that, and then as we’re going and he’s creating, and he puts it on my plate, she’s like, ā€œReally, no vegetables?ā€
17:08
I’m like, no, I’m good. And it wasn’t hindering her food at all.
17:16
And then as we’re going, they’re just… Yeah, they were kind of judgy, just staring.
17:26
And you know, we’re just like, okay. And I’m eating, and she’s like, ā€œYou’re
17:31
just really shoveling that rice in.ā€ I was like, ā€œYep, I really am. I’m
17:37
shoveling it in.ā€ And then she like… So they had tiny appetites apparently. Which, or maybe we have large appetites, I don’t know.
17:48
But they skipped the fish and the shrimp, so they also only had chicken and steak.
17:54
And after she ate a little bit of rice and some of the chicken and some of the steak,
18:03
she laid down over in the chair. And he was like, ā€œShe just can’t eat very much.ā€
18:08
And she was like, ā€œI’m so full. I don’t know how you’re doing. I don’t know how you eat that much.ā€ And we were like, we’re American. That’s how. And so I was like, maybe I’m the fat American.
18:20
Because she just kept being like, ā€œYou really like that food, don’t you?ā€
18:27
And we were like, yeah, they left before dessert. We were still eating the main course. They left.
18:33
And I wish I’d been like, you going to finish that? Go ahead and pass
18:39
that plate. Just to shock them. Are you gonna waste that food? Oh. Oh, we don’t do that. We don’t waste food. That should have been the angle. You mind?
18:52
So yeah, that was the only unpleasant, because we were just like, were they really that blatantly
19:00
rude? Because it was like the staring. I had an interesting experience on the
19:07
flight there with a lady who I think probably, such as yourself, has flight anxiety. She may
19:20
have taken something before the flight. And she was sitting right next to me,
19:26
and I was in the middle, and she was by the window. I don’t even think I can
19:34
summarize the conversation because I don’t even remember. Nothing she was saying made sense. She started talking about how we were sat together for a reason,
19:43
and I was supposed to learn something from her. And she was like, I’m sensing matrimony.
19:51
And we were like, no, no. And then she’s like, are you
19:56
planning on proposing on this trip? And he was like, yeah, yeah I am.
20:01
And she was just like, I knew it. You actually just spoiled it. You have such
20:09
good intuition, actually. That’s wild. It was insane. And then she passed out
20:16
for the remaining three hours of the flight. Didn’t wake once. She was out.
20:21
And then I saw her at the airport afterwards in customs line with us. She was standing there reading a book. Normal. Just normal. Back to normal.
Interesting plane ride
20:30
I’ve heard some crazy stories on planes when you’re fighting it and you’re not going to sleep yet. And she did, she looked a little tired. On the plane ride back, I had an interesting…
20:50
this is where I always wonder how you would have handled this. Because on the way back I was starting to feel a little sick on the last couple days.
21:00
Like really congested, nose running, just didn’t feel good. And I got car sick on
21:05
the way to the airport because it was like 80 degrees in the car and very stop and go.
21:13
So they were in the line when we got there, and then we got pulled to the side because we
21:19
had priority tickets. So we were like next in line, we’re like okay, cool. So the people in front of us, to put our bags on the conveyor belt, which was broken,
21:26
so we couldn’t even do that. But to get our tickets, it was four people. And I don’t want to judge them for having a lot of bags because I don’t know how long
21:35
they were there. I don’t know how long their trip was. But it was a man and three women.
21:40
And so I was just standing there, and y’all know me, my face, it’s not the
21:46
prettiest when it’s relaxed. Like it’s just not. I was watching the Christmas special and you just
21:53
get lost shaking my head a lot of the time, because it’s also not really like a mean face.
21:58
No, not all the time. Like I’m picturing you just standing there blank-faced. It’s not like, I feel like I look mean when I’m just resting.
22:10
But I feel like you’re more like… you have a tendency to err on the side of a
22:28
little annoyed. You err on the side of a little lost, a little confused. It’s
22:36
not by much. It’s just a slight lean. Well, okay. So I was standing there not
22:42
feeling good, car sick, no service on the phone, so I’m not scrolling on my phone.
22:48
Just blank-facing it. I’m not talking to Jonathan. We’re not conversing. We were just standing there.
22:56
And I’m not going to lie, the main woman, I’ll call her the main one, because she was in my head the main character, and in her head too. And so she was very loud,
23:11
making a big thing about all of her bags. Well, I’m just standing there. The man, he had
23:22
long turquoise hair. That was an interesting fact. And so I made eye contact with him and gave him a
23:36
little smile. Not like a… yeah, no, no, no. I didn’t do that. I was just like… like we made eye contact. I mean, we were there forever.
24:00
And so he starts whispering, and I’m half paying attention. The main girl turns around,
24:11
she’s probably like mid-30s, I would say. I actually found her on the internet afterwards.
24:18
How? Because she made it known what her name was. Okay. She was there with her cousin. She used to play softball, so she used to cheer. I found all this out pre-internet.
24:32
So she turns around and looks at me and goes, ā€œOh, are you having a bad day? Oh, you’re just having a bad day. We don’t want to leave. We don’t want to leave either. You just
24:40
don’t want to leave.ā€ And I’m like, what?
24:45
I wish I was exaggerating that. She was so aggressively pointed, and I was just like, what?
24:55
I didn’t even get to answer, and then she turns around. And I go to look at Jonathan,
25:03
and then I look back, and again my face is probably very confused. And she and her cousin, that I now know is her cousin, they were taking selfies with
25:12
me in the background. And then taking it and looking at me and pointing at it and laughing.
25:17
What would you have done in that? Probably my initial reaction, when they’re saying,
25:23
ā€œOh you’re having a bad day,ā€ I probably would have been like, are you talking to me?
25:33
And they say, ā€œOh yeah, having a bad day,ā€ I would have said, I’m actually having a great day. Are you having a bad day? And then when they started taking pictures,
25:42
I could have seen myself going along with it a little bit and be like,
25:49
can we actually do one more? If you make it less fun for them that you’re in on the joke.
25:58
Oh wait, I blinked in that one. Can we do one more, please? Like really act like it’s not bothering you. Yeah. Turn the situation around,
26:08
make them uncomfortable. Probably something along those lines. But also, I truly was not feeling good. And so I was just like, what?
26:18
And Jonathan’s painfully oblivious to all of it. He’s just looking around, probably
26:25
looking at trail cameras on his phone. So then I’m like, okay, they’re done. They finally got done. We got our bags. I was like, we’re moving on.
26:34
We hung with them the entire time. They’re on our flight, and she’s sitting next to
26:41
me on the flight. That’s hilarious.
26:47
And so we sit down. I’m like, whatever, I’m just going to read
26:52
and go to sleep. This isn’t anything. I have the window seat. She sits down,
26:58
it’s the end of the world that she and her cousin aren’t sitting together. So she’s like, ā€œHow do we fix this?ā€ She’s from Charlotte. Again, I know all these things.
27:11
So she’s like, ā€œHow do we fix this?ā€ trying to figure it out. And I’m like, listen, my husband’s over there. I’d love to sit with him. If y’all
27:20
figure out how to work it around, I’ll move. I’ll move to whatever so I can sit with him.
27:26
They’re like, okay, okay. So they start doing Jenga over here, or whatever. Tetris. Then they figure it out. And so
27:32
I end up not moving and Jonathan comes and sits with me. So they’re across the aisle from us, she and her cousin. The man and the older woman are up
27:40
front because we were in the business class. So this entire flight… I knew it was a red
27:47
flag at the very beginning when the stewardess would come out, and she was so sweet getting
27:53
all of her drinks. She’s an older lady. And they were so overly nice to her at the
27:58
beginning. I was like, that’s a red flag. Because they’re like, ā€œMary, Mary,
28:03
you’re so beautiful. You are so gorgeous. We love you, Mary. Thank you so much.ā€ Like so
28:09
over the top that I was like, okay. It’s also a thing of like, you’ve
28:18
probably never worked in a job with customer service or having to deal with other people.
28:26
Who, me? No, the girls.
28:32
I know you have. The girls. And it’s like,
28:38
being over the top nice like that makes you uncomfortable and it makes you feel kind of stupid. It was condescending. It really was. And they had made… I don’t want to dog
28:49
on them even more, but like, I do. They were being very loud the entire time about like, ā€œWell, you should have seen our Europe trip last month.ā€ ā€œBe careful with that.
28:59
That’s Louis Vuitton.ā€ Very, you know, like that. So they’re loud. It’s whatever. I’m reading
29:08
my book, and as the flight goes, they are ordering drinks, and I go to sleep.
29:14
So the rest of this is relayed by Jonathan. I woke up at the end and he’s like, ā€œYou missed a show.ā€
29:22
So apparently at some point she got up and went and rummaged through the fridge at the
29:29
front and got herself a Truly. Well, they can’t do that. So she did that, got it, came back. They were drinking heavily.
29:37
The woman that they were with from the front came back and sat in the middle of them, in their laps, and they started singing karaoke. The flight attendant came back, was like, ā€œMa’am,
29:46
you’re going to need to go back to your seat. If we could have y’all be a little quieter.ā€ She was trying to be nice. And they were like, ā€œHow big is the plane?
29:55
It’s an American Airlines.ā€ Like, this is in the business class section. So it’s like a 33 or a 22.
30:00
A 22. Okay. But then it was 33 behind it. Yeah. So there’s only like 10, 16, I think, something. It’s a small number of like two-twos.
30:12
They’re in the front. And so she’s like, ā€œCan y’all be quiet?ā€ And she’s like, ā€œWhat? Excuse me? This has been the worst flight I’ve ever been on. This
30:22
is like a GD Spirit flight. We can’t even get a… just… we can’t even get an effing water.ā€
30:31
And mind you, this lady has been so attentive. Like, I’ve witnessed her be so attentive.
30:37
And the woman’s like, ā€œI’m so sorry for your inconvenience, but we need you to stay calm.ā€ And they start patting her, like, ā€œOkay, we’ve heard enough. You can leave. All right,
30:46
sweetie. Goodbye.ā€ Just being so rude. So like, I wish I was exaggerating and
30:54
making it up. I hate that someone is like that out there, but they were.
31:00
And the fact that there’s two of them, even if the other one wasn’t as outspoken and she was just going along with it, is crazy to me. So, I found out her name, went and looked her up.
31:11
It’s in the description. We tagged her below. Went and looked her up. Every post, Bible
31:19
verses. Every post, ā€œGod gave me this,ā€ whatever. It was so upsetting that to some people that is
31:31
the standard of Christian love. You know what I’m saying? It’s not. But it was the stereotypical.
31:41
And you know, we’re in the airport, like, I got to get back to the south.
31:50
That sounds like an eventful… Would you have said anything on the flight if you were witnessing all of that? Mind you, I very much thought about it at
32:00
some point, not on the flight, but like in other circumstances. And I was like, these people seem like the type that they would go crazy. If you chirp, they go high and start going way above and
32:13
beyond. And I’m like, I’m not dealing with that. I could have seen myself doing more of like
32:20
a serious chirp, almost like a, hey, I’m going to give you some
32:30
advice type of chirp, really just piss them off. But I would be having this internal struggle of,
32:40
somebody needs to say something. Should it be me? Do I wait and see if someone else does?
32:48
And I feel like in that scenario, I’m less likely to say something in general public.
33:00
Especially if I’m with Macy, because things can turn violent and escalate very quickly.
33:06
And I don’t even put myself in those situations. I try to avoid those at all costs because most of the time it’s stupid. Anyway, on a plane, what are you going to do?
33:17
You going to fight me? Yeah. You going to fight me? You’re going to get duct taped to your seat if they’re not going to play with you doing something on a plane.
33:28
Nobody wants chaos on the plane. Let’s just get home. It’s already a stressful, tiring situation.
33:37
But I could see myself saying something if they’re being mean to Mary. Yeah. And I would say the extent of
33:43
mean to Mary was like them… if they had patted me, they were patting her being like, ā€œThat’s enough.ā€
33:51
And I’m like, oh, you love Mary. I saw it coming when they were being so lovey. I’m like, oh,
33:57
you’re going to go so the opposite way if she says no to you. Very entitled.
34:03
Oh, the antics of Antigga. But again, now that we’ve talked about the trip the entire time… Nate, anything to say about his trip?
Nate’s trip
34:16
He went to Arkansas. I did. I got to go home. Oh, exciting. Which I’ve rarely done in the past few years.
34:25
Which one? The Christmas one. Oh, isn’t it so cute? Yeah, so cute. Got all the lights
34:30
on the courthouse and so many people out there. Was that your baby’s first time going to Arkansas?
34:35
Yes. That’s fun. It was. She enjoyed it. It was good to see family. Trips are
34:41
never long enough, you know, but it was good. We had the Starlink on the roof while we were
34:47
driving, so we gave that a good test run. Oh. Did you… Oh no. She doesn’t watch screens. I was about to say,
34:53
did you do that to have a movie for… Okay. No, but it’s… what was it for then?
35:00
Just testing. I was just testing it out. I thought there may have been a chance I would need to upload a video while we were there. And I didn’t trust any of the internet. So I thought,
35:11
does it work driving on the road too? If y’all didn’t know that, she heard
35:16
things going on downstairs. But get back out of there. Legitimately will be a game changer for
35:22
you. Like, it’s actually crazy. How long were y’all there?
35:28
We got there on a Thursday and left Sunday morning. So, two days.
35:33
Now that y’all have gone to your family’s side, are you doing anything big for Christmas? Because
35:39
we’re filming this a couple days prior to Christmas. Or are y’all just going to be low-key at the house with the baby? We’ll, I think for the most part,
35:46
be low-key at the house. And I think it’ll be the first Christmas
35:51
either of us has ever been able to be low-key. One of Macy’s sisters lives across the country,
35:58
and so her dad flew there and is spending Christmas there. So there’s no… and all
36:05
the other family Christmas have been done, right? So we don’t have anything to do on Christmas Day
36:11
but wake up and just be at home, right? And I may never go back.
36:16
Yeah. I think we’re going to get a taste of it this time, and then next year when they’re like, ā€œOh, well, we’re doing this onā€¦ā€ we’re not. Or I mean, you could host.
36:27
Yeah, you could host. The way we always did it growing up was because my mom’s side is big and my dad’s side is small. And so,
36:34
we always did my dad’s side as Christmas Eve. And they were totally fine being the Christmas Eve.
36:40
And it gave us a whole evening with them. And there was no back and forth on the day of.
36:47
So my Pap was always Christmas Eve and we played games. I was the only grandchild, so it was really small and intimate, and we did presents and everything.
36:56
And then the next day we always did low-key morning. Just us. Maybe my Nana came over,
37:03
but it was just us for the morning. And then we’d go to my Nana’s house in the evening. So even though we went somewhere, it was always low-key.
37:11
And now my mom hosts, and so I just show up, which is great. I was going to host this year, but she decided that she could do it. So I decided to give the
37:24
people that work in the barn, you know, leave early. I’m just going to go feed and then head to my mom’s house. So it’ll be pretty low-key. We never did anything on Christmas Day growing
37:34
up. As far as family get-togethers, I only really had my dad’s side. So on Christmas Eve
37:45
that’s what we did. But then on Christmas Day it was always just lock in with the presents. It was always just the four of us. I did decide to do a little prank while I
37:55
was there. We drew names and did all that stuff, and then I decided I’m going to get
38:06
my grandma a gift from my grandpa. So, is your grandpa with us?
38:12
Yes. Okay. That would have been crazy. So I decided, you know what, I’m just shopping around. I see a little lingerie on the clearance
38:23
rack. Oh. So you got lingerie for your grandma? Yeah. I picked one up and then wrapped it and
38:30
I put, you know, ā€œTo my grandma, from my grandpa.ā€ Well, he has no idea. So they’re passing out
38:39
presents, like, ā€œOh here you go.ā€ And he’s… I already see his face. He’s like, did I wrap that?
38:48
But at this point he’s like, I’m not going to say it. I don’t remember. And then she starts opening it. She’s like, what? And then she sees it and now she’s so embarrassed.
38:57
She’s like, ā€œWhy did you do that?ā€ And he’s like, ā€œI didn’t do that.ā€
39:03
That was a big hoot. I never told. I think she still thinks you did it.
39:08
I didn’t tell. I thought, you know… And then, well, here’s the thing. Also,
39:18
I decided, I think I’m going to try standup again. You know, we went and saw Nate Bargatze and he’s
39:28
what, 45, 46? I think he is like 46. And I’m like, that’s 15,
39:39
16 years from now. I could still give it a shot. Yeah, you could be where he is 15 years from now.
39:47
So I had a situation happen that I’m going to try to figure out how to work it out into a joke.
39:52
But my grandparents, they’ve always been young. Some people’s grandparents, you see them, you see
40:01
an old person, you’re like, that’s an old person. You’re on the way out. Like you use a walker going
40:08
to the bathroom around the house. Like you’re old. My grandparents have always been very young. Spry. Travel. Let’s go on this trip. Let’s do this. Quick wit, good mind.
40:17
Very blessed for that to have been the case. I’ve just always viewed them that way until
40:27
a few days ago. We were at their house for Christmas, and then we packed up the car,
40:32
we left, we get halfway home, and I realize I left my phone at their house.
40:39
At this point we’re way past bedtime. This is about to turn into a whole ordeal. So I said, you know what, we’ll just go back. And then Mason’s like, ā€œWell,
40:46
do you need to tell them that you left it and that you’re coming back?ā€ I said, ā€œNo, don’t do that. Because they’re going to say, ā€˜We’ll meet you. We’ll bring
40:54
it to you.ā€™ā€ And I don’t want them getting out. It’s late. They’re old. They’re mid-80s.
41:00
So I said, ā€œWe’ll let them know right before we get there that we’re about to knock on the door.ā€
41:06
So let them know, show up, they open the door, they are stressed and in a panic. They’re like, ā€œWe found your phone and we tried to let you know that we would bring it to you.ā€
41:19
I’m like, oh. They’re like, ā€œWe tried to call you and tell you that we had your phone.ā€ So I’m like, oh, y’all have to bring it.
41:30
I don’t really realize what they’re saying. I get my phone. They found it. They called me,
41:38
watched my phone ring, and went, ā€œWe didn’t get him. We’ll try again.ā€
41:44
So they tried eight more times and sent two texts. What about calling Macy?
41:52
No, no, no, no, no. They called my phone, watched it ring, and went, ā€œDidn’t get him. Missed him.ā€
42:01
Why don’t you try calling him again? Try calling another eight times. I had nine missed calls on the phone that they found.
42:08
Did they think maybe you had an Apple Watch and it would… No, they don’t know about Apple Watches. They don’t know. They just called the phone and
42:17
watched it ring and they were like, ā€œGod, we didn’t get him. Why don’t you try him again? I hate for him to have to come back.ā€ And I went, oh, you’re… that was an
42:29
old moment. That was an old moment for sure. Tired. It was a long day. It was a long night.
42:34
Yeah. It was well after, and they thought, ā€œWell, 7:00, we’ll just text him.ā€
42:40
And the texts were 10 minutes apart. So they went, ā€œWell, why don’t you just try shooting him another text?ā€ All the while, your wife has her phone.
42:50
Yeah. She texted them to let them know we were coming back. They didn’t respond to her. They
42:55
just kept trying you. That’s hilarious.
43:01
Yeah, you should make that into a bit. I feel like I could work that out. It’s very funny. I honestly, comedians like Nate Bargatze who are
43:09
clean comedians, any age could watch him, which I can appreciate. I mean, I like a raunchy joke
43:17
just like anybody, but I like his clean comedy. A lot of his bits are based on his parents and
43:26
his childhood. I think it’s great. And just the way he says things is so funny.
43:32
We went and saw it. It was a great show. If you have the chance to go to a Nate Bargatze comedy show, because the openers were good. The host, Julian something, they were great.
43:48
I’ve never been to a comedy show ever. I haven’t either. That was a good one. It was fun. I will say though,
43:57
floor seats seem great. Never going to do it again. I was so uncomfortable. And I couldn’t see.
44:04
I think we unknowingly had the worst floor seats. Well, originally we had fifth row, so I think
44:16
that would have been great. I was not able to sell those tickets, so I ended up giving them to Rachel and my cousin Aaron. So people went, and they said it was great.
44:38
We were so far back in row 18 the other night that we were just like this. It’s a little too
44:44
far to really see the guy, but it’s not far enough back. Too close to see the screen.
44:50
I think if you’re in the first four, five, six rows, because they also had
44:56
big TVs up there for when they turned around, I think floor seats are awesome.
45:02
And I think even floor seats, maybe row 25, might be awesome because then you’re just screening it.
45:10
I don’t want to be one though. Now, I could see you being a front row guy because they’re picking on the front row guys the whole time.
45:17
Mostly because they’re making jokes about, you think it’s better down here, like this is a comedy
45:23
show, you don’t need to see, you need to hear. And so they’re picking on the people at the front a lot, which I would hate. But I feel like you would thrive.
45:36
It’s my worst nightmare, but secretly I would enjoy that.
45:44
It’s more interactive in the front. But I think we need to do something like that again. I thought it was a fun group night where we went to dinner and
45:54
went and saw a show. It was a lot of fun. I liked that Matt and Nate paid for dinner.
46:01
I loved that. That was my favorite part. I think we should do that more often. I do too. My favorite part was when they said, ā€œGet whatever
46:09
you want.ā€ ā€œYeah, we’re buying. We meant it.ā€ And then I did.
46:16
I’m glad. You know what, I was going to hold back a little bit, but then y’all started ordering apps, and it set the tone.
46:29
I did try to do that. I tried to go overboard with my order just to make it really clear.
46:36
Get whatever you want. Don’t feel like, well Nate’s paying so let’s try to be a little…
46:41
And then if you had ordered like one crab cake, I would have been like, oh no, like I can’t order
46:50
something nice. He’s sacrificing himself for me. So I tried to go a little crazy so y’all would
47:00
feel comfortable getting whatever you actually wanted to eat. This has been planned. They wanted to take us out for a long time. I
47:06
don’t think this included me though. No, I was just there and got paid for.
47:14
When y’all were taking the bill, I was kind of like, this doesn’t seem right. Like, I don’t know why they’re paying for me, but I let it happen and no one said anything.
47:24
Could you imagine we split it? I know. I’m the only one left out because they asked me before anyone. They were like, ā€œIs this all together?ā€
47:33
And I was like, I’m not answering that. And then Maddie took over and was like,
47:39
ā€œIt’s on them.ā€ I was like, oh, thank you, Maddie. I was so glad. I think she had a great night. Matt’s wife is very early on in her pregnancy, and so she’s been sick
47:50
lately. We sat next to them, and she busted a gut the entire time. I was so happy she wasn’t sick.
That’s all folks!
48:00
Yeah, that was fun to watch. But anyway, okay. Well, that’s kind of catching up on what we’ve done the last couple weeks. I hope y’all enjoyed.
48:09
I know cat’s out of the bag a little bit over here. So some of y’all are going to be like, ā€œI knew it.ā€ There’s going to be a Reddit page. There’s going to be all kinds of things. I won’t
48:23
be looking at it. Yeah, me either. But anyway, hope y’all enjoyed. Stay tuned for more.
48:28
I think this is the last… is this the last Katching Up With Katie of 2025? Yes. That’s crazy. I think so. No, the 30th is like next Thursday.
48:37
Okay. Yeah, the 30th. So we’ll have one more. One more. Okay. So let us know if there’s anything special you want us to talk about for our
48:45
last Katching Up With Katie of the year because we could do a Q&A with everybody. Just kind of make it like a wrap-up session. And then we will plan on doing like a 2025
48:55
wrapped video like we’ve done the past couple years. So stay tuned for that. Follow on
49:00
Snapchat and I’ll see you in the next one. Oh, hold on. Hold on. We got to end it with,
49:06
ā€œWe’ll see you in the next one.ā€ Yeah.
