#14: Leading When You're Triggered: Mastering Emotional Hijacks

MPWR Podcast | Become The Leader YOU Want To Follow

How Do You Lead When You're Triggered?

We've all been there: the meeting turns tense, someone pushes your buttons, your heart rate spikes and before you know it, you're reacting in a way you regret.

But here's the truth:

"Emotional reactivity doesn't disqualify us as leaders. Avoiding it does."

In this episode, we're diving deep into one of the most overlooked leadership challenges: how to lead when you're emotionally triggered.

✅ Learn why emotional intelligence isn't about never getting upset but recognizing when you're hijacked and knowing what to do next. ✅ Hear real-life stories from competitive golf blowups to family award-ceremony meltdowns that show how easy it is to get hijacked (and how to recover). ✅ Discover actionable tools to move from default reactions to intentional responses.

As Eric explains:

"High-level leaders aren't those who never get hijacked. They're the ones who recognize it quickly and know how to respond."

We'll explore: ✔️ The science of emotional hijacking (your amygdala vs. your executive brain) ✔️ How triggers act as dashboard lights, not condemnation ✔️ The power of naming your default patterns and replacing them with conscious choices ✔️ A simple but profound question that transforms moments of anger or shame into opportunities for leadership:

"How does the best version of me respond in this situation?"

Research backs this up:

  • Leaders with high emotional intelligence outperform their peers by up to 20% in team engagement and decision quality (Goleman, 2018).

  • 90% of top performers in organizations have high EQ, while only 20% of low performers do (TalentSmart).

  • Emotional self-awareness is repeatedly linked to better leadership outcomes, reduced conflict, and healthier team cultures (Harvard Business Review, 2019).

We also talk about the cost of staying hijacked: lost time, broken trust, spiraling conflicts. As we mention:

"It's not just me paying the price. It's the whole environment."

Finally, we share practical steps you can use immediately: ✔️ Spot your emotional patterns ✔️ Name your triggers ✔️ Pause and ask the right questions ✔️ Shorten your recovery time ✔️ Lead yourself and others with calm and clarity

If you're ready to stop letting emotional hijacks sabotage your leadership and start using them as signals to grow, this episode is for you.

🎧 Tune in now to learn how to master emotional hijacks and become the leader people want to follow.

00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:01,000
dawn:  We are recording. Awesome.

2
00:00:01,000 --> 00:00:02,000
For those of you who have been with us, you know that in the first season we spent time unpacking our core leadership toolkit. I would strongly recommend if you're new to the podcast, take some time. Go back and listen to those first episodes because we want to put these tools into your hands so that you can level up your leadership and even use them to transform your team and your culture.

3
00:00:02,000 --> 00:00:03,000
For that reason. As we shift into the second season, we want to dig deep into application and integration. We gotta move beyond just good ideas. We gotta get our boots on the ground. We gotta get into the trenches of life and leadership and explore how do these tools actually transform how we operate? My name is Eric Er, and I am here again with Dawn Elden, and we are more than excited not just to wrap up season one, but to launch into season two and take this conversation more deeply.

4
00:00:03,000 --> 00:00:04,000
A hammer is no more effective than a screwdriver, but given to somebody who knows how to use them, they're very useful tools. So Eric. Let's talk about it. What makes this transition so important for leaders right now?

5
00:00:04,000 --> 00:00:05,000
The first is in working with an NFL Professional Football team years ago, I remember as I was unpacking these tools for part of the coaching staff they reflected back and they said, Eric, this. This toolkit that you've developed is no different than the playbook that we have worked really hard to develop for our teams, whether that's the offensive team, defensive team, special teams, doesn't matter, but they have to work so hard to create a playbook because they have all these players coming from different backgrounds who've had different coaching styles worked within different systems who suddenly show up and they have to figure out how to forge together to be a team to operate in a way that allows them to execute.

6
00:00:05,000 --> 00:00:06,000
We've gotta move beyond good ideas. I can't tell you the number of leaders I've talked to said I've read all the leadership books, I've been to conferences, I've been to, I've sat through webinars, I've sent my team to conferences. We've hired in motivational speakers and we've had people come in as consultants and it, all of those are great resources.

7
00:00:06,000 --> 00:00:07,000
Stories of failure, stories of success as we bridge from season one to season two.

8
00:00:07,000 --> 00:00:08,000
dawn: Unfortunately, that actually doesn't make a change in how we behave, how we show up, how we live, and how we lead. And I'm curious, why is that integration piece, why is moving from information to integration. So difficult for us.

9
00:00:08,000 --> 00:00:09,000
But that's the price of admission. That's right. And so as leaders and for our listeners, my, my invitation is, as we jump into season two, to be okay to take some of the things we're talking about and to practice them and to work with them and to be okay to do them poorly. I. Until you get better.

10
00:00:09,000 --> 00:00:10,000
Well under pressure, we talked about how emotional intelligence is actually a leadership superpower. We unpacked the Kairo circle for turning obstacles into opportunities for growth. We taught you how to balance, support, and challenge with the Empower Makes matrix to create an environment where people are actually feeling empowered and are growing in a safe environment.

11
00:00:10,000 --> 00:00:11,000
dawn: And the reason that we've done this, some people might think it's kind of bonkers that we have pulled back the curtain and just given away all of our content for free. But the, the reason that we've done this is because, Eric, your vision that you have communicated consistently in the years that I've been working with you is to get these tools in the hands of as many leaders as possible because you actually believe that these tools Yeah, hold.

12
00:00:11,000 --> 00:00:12,000
It takes practice, it takes a lot of, lot of humility. But for those leaders who embark on that journey. I've never heard one say, oh, I regret the time and energy I spent developing this toolkit.

13
00:00:12,000 --> 00:00:13,000
And even for those who haven't. Been exposed to the toolkit. We're gonna talk in terms of principles and practices that everybody can engage with through each of those episodes. Number two, honest conversations with real leaders on how they are implementing this toolkit and transforming their leadership and their organizations.

14
00:00:13,000 --> 00:00:14,000
We are gonna show you how these tools impact and how to use them to impact every aspect of your business and your leadership. It's not just gonna be about leadership theory. That's what I want you to hear. It's, this is how I actually showed up in the moment. Yeah. And sometimes it's gonna be, here's where I miss the mark and how I am planning on showing up next time, because those mistakes, Eric, I love that you highlighted.

15
00:00:14,000 --> 00:00:15,000
They are unwilling to settle for their own plateauing. They're willing to put in the perspiration to learn new concepts and principles and practices, and they're willing to do the work of. Sucking at something until they get better. And so I just, I really want to push on our listeners to take the challenge to go back, to listen to season one, to get some of these tools in your tool belt.
