From USC to Cocaine Quarterback: Owen Hanson on Power, Prison, and Starting Over

[SPEAKER_01]: And for the first time in my life, I lied.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, no, officer, I'm not.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was a coldly shit.
[SPEAKER_01]: What a rush.
[SPEAKER_01]: From that day forward, I was chasing that rush.
[SPEAKER_01]: One of the coaches for the football team saw me working out and he was like, you need to try out for football.
[SPEAKER_01]: You made the football team to throw a ball of molloo, read your bush, who was dating Kim Kardashian, Matt Liner was dating Paris Hilton.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everywhere we went out, we had to take the red carpet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone's seeing me in the gym and they're like,
[SPEAKER_01]: Jack, what are you taking?
[SPEAKER_01]: It literally became this like black market doctor.
[SPEAKER_00]: So cocaine becomes a thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: I see there's a market.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, okay, what are you guys paying?
[SPEAKER_01]: They're paying $100 for a grand bag.
[SPEAKER_01]: I get it for 20 and I sell it for 60.
[SPEAKER_01]: People are going to come to me.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I go to practice.
[SPEAKER_01]: I come back from training table with my fraternity by those girls.
[SPEAKER_01]: We got a problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: Nothing goes for out.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just had a whole word.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's not a problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then he eventually said, how would you like to do what you're doing now?
[SPEAKER_01]: But in Australia, and I'm going to pay you a million dollars a day.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll have to put some of the four seasons so that he's like, get a room holding this box and it's heavy.
[SPEAKER_01]: I saw him clearly get over here now.
[SPEAKER_01]: There was 10 kilos.
[SPEAKER_01]: In 20 minutes later, he comes back with a million dollars cast.
[SPEAKER_01]: A trainer goes to the hotel that he's supposed to meet Robin and I give him 2.5 million.
[SPEAKER_01]: Three hours later, I get a phone call.
[SPEAKER_01]: I answered he goes, we got a problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: I lost the money.
[SPEAKER_01]: They arrest Sean Carolyn, my trainer.
[SPEAKER_01]: They find the 700 grand.
[SPEAKER_00]: Robinhood, what you had done, is called the police.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you're at 3.2, that you're out to the cartel.
[SPEAKER_00]: But let's talk about prison for him.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you hear what?
[SPEAKER_00]: You have 21 years?
[SPEAKER_01]: 21 years?
[SPEAKER_01]: I would start making this protein ice cream.

[SPEAKER_00]: Well there are very few documentaries that break out of the true crime bubble and turn into a full-on cultural conversation.
[SPEAKER_00]: Cocaine quarterback is one of them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Produced by Mark Wahlberg and now streaming on Amazon, the series pulls back the curtain on the life of Owen Hansen.
[SPEAKER_00]: And today, he's here with us in studio.
[SPEAKER_00]: The documentary was filmed while Owen was still in federal prison.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now, newly back into the world, he's sitting down to talk about what led to that moment, what it was like watching his life unfold on screen, and what he's trying to build next.
[SPEAKER_00]: Owen Hansen grew up in Rondondo Beach, California.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was an athlete from a young age.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was on a volleyball scholarship at USC.
[SPEAKER_00]: But when he got red shirted, he decided that he needed to get stronger.
[SPEAKER_00]: So one thing led to another and after using some steroids, he made it onto the USC football team.
[SPEAKER_00]: From the outside, it looked like a very familiar American trajectory, talent, opportunity, momentum.
[SPEAKER_00]: But behind that path was a different one forming.
[SPEAKER_00]: What began with selling steroids to teammates escalated over time.
[SPEAKER_00]: First into drugs, then into something much larger.
[SPEAKER_00]: According to federal court records, those choices ultimately led Owen into running a large scaled drug trafficking and illegal gambling operation.
[SPEAKER_00]: One decision built on another access created opportunity and eventually he found himself at the center of an operation that prosecutors described as expansive and sophisticated.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was arrested, charged, and sentenced to 21 years in federal prison.
[SPEAKER_00]: He ended up serving roughly nine and a half years, but while he was still incarcerated, his story became the subject of the Amazon DocuSeries cocaine quarterback.
[SPEAKER_00]: Produced by Mark Wahlberg, a series that pulled back the curtain on how a college athlete became a federal inmate, and how ambition, environment, and unchecked momentum.

[SPEAKER_01]: Now you're supposed to excuse me, and thanks for having me, Rachel.
[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, so where do you live right now?
[SPEAKER_01]: I live in California.
[SPEAKER_00]: You do.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, near your dad or... Orange County area, my father's retired now.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's in Montana.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I know that you just recently got out of halfway house, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, like getting out of prison and not and starting from zero.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, how are what are you doing?
[SPEAKER_00]: How did you like get your own place?
[SPEAKER_01]: So I got released from federal bureau prison in 2024 and they put me in a half a house for 20 months and so you could work yeah you could work okay you could go to the gym and you could work right and you could do it Monday through Saturday okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I literally went every day, I would go to the gym in the morning and then I would start making this protein ice cream.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I built this brand in a federal prison cell.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, this is what I got to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: God, this is my calling.
[SPEAKER_00]: God, all right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So we will get there.
[SPEAKER_00]: We're going to slow back to this and what you're doing now.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I was just curious, because I've had so many people on that I've had to start from zero when they are such a hustler.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they have this personality that they are addicted to.
[SPEAKER_00]: the good life right which we all kind of are but you really had it and lived it so that's got to be the hardest thing for to humble yourself yeah very humbling right going from a million dollars a day to going to a hundred dollars a day yeah so it's a it's a big change yeah and feeling like you have to rely on people to maybe get you there again must be really humbling too yeah definitely i hate asking for help yeah and whether it's a
[SPEAKER_01]: of parent or a sibling or a woman or a friend, whatever it is, it's just it's kind of humiliating.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: If 43 years old you shouldn't be asking for help.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's part of the comeback and now I have to accept it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And people are willing to help, and I'm going to take it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I love that.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So let's start at the beginning.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're firmware on to Beach, California.
[SPEAKER_00]: You grew up with two parents, a sister.
[SPEAKER_00]: I know that at some point you, they split up, which changed your life a little bit, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't think a little bit.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think a lot, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, for sure.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think as far as women in my life, I think it probably went wrong for me when my mom left and my
[SPEAKER_01]: I think that's where, you know, people I talked to, you know, for the last 20 years about relationships, you're like, it's started with your mom leaving.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a tough pill to swallow, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: But you, you start to realize maybe that is the reason.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I've had girlfriends.
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember breaking up with girlfriends.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was so hard to let him go, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Because your dust like clock feels like I'm losing my mom again.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's how it's been every time like I, I'm in a relationship and I lose that person's like, fuck, I lost another one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I remember you saying on you, Jackie series that like your dad was like, we don't cry in this family.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, let's go.
[SPEAKER_00]: Get the surf board, get the volleyball.
[SPEAKER_00]: Let's go.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you developed a love a passion and a talent for volleyball
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was volleyball and surfing was like our life, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: You grew up in the South Bay, the Redona Beach, the Hermosa Beach, all you do is play volleyball and surf.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and you were good.
[SPEAKER_00]: You were strong, you were good, but natural, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'll natural.
[SPEAKER_01]: All American volleyball player.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think I was number three in the world at one time at the college, excuse me, at the high school level.
[SPEAKER_01]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, and during this time though, I mean, I'm just so curious as I've watched the docu-series about like, because my parents were divorced when I was five, and I had a brother.
[SPEAKER_00]: He was a half-brother though, and so he went and he lived with his mom in California, and I moved from Alaska.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was born in Anchorage, Alaska.
[SPEAKER_00]: I moved to New York with my mother.
[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't see him again until long story short.
[SPEAKER_00]: I was in boarding school.
[SPEAKER_00]: I ran away, and I called him, and I was now 15, and I hadn't seen him since I was four.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, did you have any relationship
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, it was strange because I'd get to see him like twice a year, but it was hard for me because what would happen was I'd go see my mom for like say Thanksgiving or Christmas and my sister would go see my dad.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like a swap.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: I never really got to hang out with my sister.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then my sister ran away to like 16 years old and she started using heroin and it was like fuck that my poor sister she's going through the same problem I'm going through but she's just doing it in a different way you know she started using drugs and I remember my father he's like man we got to get your sister she's on the streets San Francisco using heroin I'm like oh fuck that's awful yeah you know she
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, my thing was volleyball, like that's going to be my high or her high was obviously drugs.
[SPEAKER_01]: And unfortunately, you know, we had a rescue her off the streets of San Francisco and clean her up and, you know, luckily she's clean today, but that's that's how she handled this this divorce.
[SPEAKER_01]: I feel.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, separation of our parents.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And do you have a relationship with your mother now?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you know, my mother and I, we speak once a week.
[SPEAKER_01]: We call each other on Sundays.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, good.
[SPEAKER_01]: She visited me maybe two or three times while I was in federal prison, which was not as much as I would like, but then the day at least I got to see her.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and also who knows, and may have been really hard for her to see you there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, for sure, not bad.
[SPEAKER_01]: She didn't want to be part of the documentary, because it's hard for her to speak about this matter, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, so all right for people that haven't seen the documentary series yet and don't know your story and they haven't read your book I just want to take them through it because it's really an incredible story and you're this like kind of, you know, the Antihiro a little bit, but but you are you you've just lived this fascinating life So you get to USC you're playing volleyball you get red-sharded because you're not you don't have the what is it the overhead the arm string arm strike okay vertical jump.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay there you have faith behind an all-american
[SPEAKER_01]: And they, they read shared to me and like, fuck man, I was so, it was like, you lose your volleyball family is the same thing as losing your mom.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like that same feeling I had because this volleyball team was like, my, my new family, you go to college and this is your, your bros. And then when you get read shared, it's like getting cut.
[SPEAKER_01]: any, you lose that family.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was so bummed.
[SPEAKER_01]: I went down back home.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, man, what am I going to do?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, I'm going to take steroids.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to work on that vertical jump.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to work on that arm strength.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to come back and I'm going to be twice as bigger and stronger.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And at the same time, though, I want people understand like who you were.
[SPEAKER_00]: You kind of come from a blue collar family, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: You go to USC, everyone's flashy and fancy and has the black cards and whatever from their parents.
[SPEAKER_00]: You come home and steroids are not cheap, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Expensive.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you go to Tijuana.
[SPEAKER_01]: I had to go to Tijuana.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, tell that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I went to the pharmacy.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I tell people I had to go down there because I couldn't afford to purchase them in America, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I think like a bottle was like $300 and I didn't have two nickels to rub together.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I went down to Tijuana and was like $20 for a vial.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So the markup was incredible and I was like, okay, I'm going to purchase this stuff here.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to figure out a way to get it across.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember the farm was the lady spoke perfect English, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I have to speak Spanish.
[SPEAKER_01]: laying out all these vials of testosterone and sippinate and propinate and stuff I've never been taken or heard of and then she's giving me pills of anavar and windstrawling and like fuck what am I going to get this ship back?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: She gave me a sandwich bag and I literally dumped the pills in there the vials.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm just looking at myself like, okay, I'm not going to just be able to put this in my pocket and walk across the border.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I remember, I was like, can I purchase some of the medical tape?
[SPEAKER_01]: She had this medical tape.
[SPEAKER_01]: I grabbed the medical tape, and I went into the bathroom, and I literally taped this bag, this sandwich bag up.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I made it like a banana, and I told people,
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't put in the whole Rachel, I put in the cracker.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: I literally just held it there for like three hours.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm holding this banana between my compressor shorts and my balls.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I walk across the border and I get to the customs line.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you got to remember I've come from the strict, my dad's very strict.
[SPEAKER_01]: Never lied, never missed a day of school.
[SPEAKER_01]: We are by the book.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the officer takes my passport and he goes, Mr. Hanson, are you bringing in the hang back?
[SPEAKER_01]: And for the first time in my life I lied.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, no officer, I'm not.
[SPEAKER_01]: He says, welcome back to America.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, holy shit, what a rush.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was the first time I've ever lied.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the first time I've ever smuggled anything into another into the United States.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I tell people from that day forward, I was chasing that rush.
[SPEAKER_01]: Until I was working for the biggest cartel, smuggling tons of cocaine, into the other countries.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: So how soon do you see the results of two, two, three weeks?
[SPEAKER_00]: So all of a sudden you're like, I love this.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm gonna do this again.
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, it's just, you're like, wow, this is, this stuff's awesome.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And then, but is that what got you to play football?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, one of the coaches for the football team saw me working out and he's like, I thought you were a volleyball player.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I said, yeah, I got, I got caught.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, well, you need to try out for football.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're, you're the size of a tight end and what we're short on tight ends right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: How'd you play at football?
[SPEAKER_01]: Never.
[SPEAKER_01]: Never in my life.
[SPEAKER_01]: My dad went and let me play football.
[SPEAKER_01]: He says it's too dangerous.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: It is.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just respect him my father because I was under his guidance.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then when the coach told me this, I was like, you know what, my dad can't get mad.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to don't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, okay, let's go.
[SPEAKER_01]: Let's try it.
[SPEAKER_01]: What do I got to lose?
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's 50 walk.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's a walk on trial.
[SPEAKER_01]: And there's 50 guys that showed up.
[SPEAKER_01]: And by the time it was all set and done, they had me bench pressing 225, 25 times, 26 times, which was like NFL combine numbers, vertical jump, 36 inches, my ran a 4, 640, which is fast.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was just juiced out of my mind and nobody knows, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: They just think I'm just, this, this just be work out.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, yeah, and I remember like two weeks later, they put a list on peak
[SPEAKER_00]: No way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I told my dad in my dad's like, no fucking way.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because even if you've played football your whole life side.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he wasn't mad, like I thought he was going to be mad because he didn't want me playing football.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the best football team in the world for college sports and USC football at that time.
[SPEAKER_00]: And for people that don't know explain like some of the players that were on the team that went pro and their dating pairs.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Carson Palmer, Troy Palamalu, Reggie Bush, who was dating Kim Kardashian, Matt Liner, it was dating pair of siltin, Sean Cody, all I mean, the list goes on that thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Kind of at the end, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Everywhere we went out, we had like the red carpet.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you got to remember at that time, we didn't have an NFL team in LA.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we were the NFL team.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we had Denzo Washington coming to our games.
[SPEAKER_01]: Snoop Dogg would come to our practices once a week.
[SPEAKER_01]: Will Ferrell.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can kill a needle that everyone was on our sidelines.
[SPEAKER_00]: Amazing.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was awesome.
[SPEAKER_00]: So I had Todd Moranovich, and he was before you, I'm assuming.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, yeah, but he, I mean, ruined him, but he had the same kind of, you know, thing where, you know, who he is like, Robo, Cuba, or whatever.
[SPEAKER_00]: and fascinating story because he was the one that that's at the time when he started doing all the drugs and he was playing amazing but he completely fell apart and it was really tough to watch and interview him because you could tell it was a daily struggle like he was still struggling.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the regret, you know, was, was so big, but it, what was interesting for him is that his a problem in his mind is that everyone else thought he could play so well and he was such a hero to so many people he didn't even like playing.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so for him it was like what makes me happy and I'm disappointing all these people and people would see him like homeless.
[SPEAKER_00]: And like, strong out and be like, God, what happened to you, what a mess.
[SPEAKER_00]: And he was thinking, you don't know my life.
[SPEAKER_00]: I didn't want to play.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, you don't know what my struggle is, but my struggle isn't that I'm not playing.
[SPEAKER_00]: My struggle is like that I can't find my happiness.
[SPEAKER_02]: So it was really a poor guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, interesting to talk to him.
[SPEAKER_00]: But he talked so much about what it was like to play for USC.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you were a celebrity.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so you are what now all of a sudden guys want to look like you and be like you and you want they want to get steroid Yeah, I'm a walk on right, so I'm not saying I'm some great football player But everyone's seeing me in the gym and they're like being the students fucking
[SPEAKER_01]: Jack, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And there was like, what are you taking?
[SPEAKER_01]: What can I use to get bigger?
[SPEAKER_01]: What can I use to cut up?
[SPEAKER_01]: What can I use for my injuries, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like, I literally became this black market doctor.
[SPEAKER_01]: They started calling me Dr. Odog.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, okay, you got it.
[SPEAKER_01]: ACL injury, okay, let's get you on some growth home on some tests, sip.
[SPEAKER_01]: But I said, I'll get that to you next week.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you started to understand the drugs and know what was good for what?
[SPEAKER_00]: And become like the doctor.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I started going back to Mexico and getting more.
[SPEAKER_01]: to my teammates, you know.
[SPEAKER_00]: But now you knew how to do it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you had a route and you had the people and I started figuring it out, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then.
[SPEAKER_00]: How often were you going down to Tijuana?
[SPEAKER_01]: Like every two weeks.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the fraternity kids, like, hey, we're trying to stay up late so we can study.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I'm in the prescribed you out of all.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd go down there and get out of all.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, we can't sleep.
[SPEAKER_01]: We've been partying.

[SPEAKER_01]: So that this is like people started coming to me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wait, so, but how are you filling all that in your balls?
[SPEAKER_01]: Listen, I just reach all, I'm not gonna lie.
[SPEAKER_01]: What happened was, I got padded down one time, and I was wearing a sweatshirt in the summer.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was like, I had to wear the sweatshirt in the summer because I was so big.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I don't want them to see us like this Jack guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: They padded me down and they went to the area and I was like, okay, that's the last time I'm smuggling.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I started using girls to smuggle.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going girls down to Papa's and beer and we'd have tacos and beers and to Kielan and for a hundred bucks.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'd give them, you know, stuff to put in their bras and testosterone to put in their vagina is not inside their butt.
[SPEAKER_01]: But you get down there, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they were glad to do it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And no one got caught.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, no one never got caught.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: But they were loving it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, a hundred bucks back then was a great money for them.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they get to drink and have a good time with me.

[SPEAKER_01]: And that's what we did.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they enjoyed it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now at what point did it switch to bigger drugs and cocaine?
[SPEAKER_01]: I would say probably my sophomore year in the fraternity.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I noticed everyone in the fraternity was during cocaine.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, man, what have you gotten into?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, I hadn't.
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember I was my dad was of strict.
[SPEAKER_01]: You didn't do anything.
[SPEAKER_00]: Do they drug test you guys on the team back then?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, they test you, but usually they test you in during season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, I knew.
[SPEAKER_00]: You steroid show up in that?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, of course, but we, I didn't, none of the, none of the, like, none of the guys on the team did any steroids during the season.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, got it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: Ever.
[SPEAKER_00]: Including, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: Including me.
[SPEAKER_00]: Wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because we get tested.
[SPEAKER_01]: If you get tested in your chest, positive for steroids, it's over.

[SPEAKER_00]: So, and you were still able, I don't know how it works.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're still able to maintain your size and your body without it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you can, but you have to literally eat like crazy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because remember, the season's only, you know, two and a half, three months.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, you're doing creating creatine and protein.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, like 400 grams of protein.
[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
[SPEAKER_01]: So there's ways.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Love that.
[SPEAKER_00]: You understand protein early on because it affects you later.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: So cocaine becomes a thing.

[SPEAKER_01]: They're paying $100 for a gram bag.

[SPEAKER_01]: I grew up in a town where there's Mexican gangs, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I grew up in redonda beach that there's a Norse side redonda gang, which is ran by the Mexican mafia.
[SPEAKER_01]: And some of these guys are my friends.
[SPEAKER_01]: I went to high school with them.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I literally go back to redonda where I'm from.
[SPEAKER_01]: I ask these guys, I say, hey, what do you guys pay for this?
[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, you know, for you, we can give it to you for $20 a gram.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, okay, well, I'm like, okay, I'm doing the numbers of like fuck, I can undercut everybody and still make triple of what, you know, what a cost, like such a math 101, I'm like, okay, if I get it for $20 and I sell it for $60, I undercut the market by $40, people are gonna come to me.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, OK, I'm going to do this.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I literally had this friend of mine drive and drop off a styrofoam container and it had e-nounces of Columbia and cocaine.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, man, what do you do with this?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't even know where to begin.
[SPEAKER_01]: It gives me a scale.
[SPEAKER_01]: a bunch of grandbags and a spoon.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, can you put the the blow in here and you put it right here?
[SPEAKER_01]: You tear the scale and I'm learning like in his is like minivan, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, okay, okay, and then I literally like I'm so scared to have it and I'm like
[SPEAKER_01]: My fraternity house is like a block over and like fuck.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't want to get caught and like run in the fraternity house And I throw it in my room because we're now in the fraternity house.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're in a bubble, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, you have nothing to worry about.
[SPEAKER_00]: Give a roommate at the time.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, have a pledge brother.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, God.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: And
[SPEAKER_00]: Did he even notice what was going on?
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, I had a tell him.
[SPEAKER_00]: He had to, OK.
[SPEAKER_01]: I made a business deal with him.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was going to say, I'm a businessman, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: At the end of the day, I said, I got an offer.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't refuse.
[SPEAKER_01]: You say, what is it?
[SPEAKER_01]: I already knew he liked Coke.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, this is where I'm going to get him.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, for every ounce you sell, there's 28 grams of an ounce.
[SPEAKER_01]: For every 27 you sell, you get the 28th one for free.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, we got eight of them here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Eight ounces.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, let's bag them all out.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm going to go to football practice.
[SPEAKER_01]: and I want you to tell all the fraternity brothers we got it for $60.
[SPEAKER_01]: Everyone else is paying 100.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm telling you, every beta that I grew up within college, all did a grandma cook a day.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like having a cocktail.
[SPEAKER_01]: This part of the tradition, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: So I go to practice.
[SPEAKER_01]: I come back from training table.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like six hours goes by and I get back.
[SPEAKER_01]: and I get into my room in my, my fraternity by this goes, he's like, like, with, I'm like, I don't know, he did all the cook, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, we got a problem with what's the problem?
[SPEAKER_01]: He goes, we're out, I said, hold, we're that's on a problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's a good problem, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And then my mind's like going, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is going to be my hustle, because everyone's doing it, and that just happened like that.
[SPEAKER_00]: So this is your sophomore year or something?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so give me an idea of how much money you start to be making.
[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe like 2,000 a week, and then it goes to 3, and the next thing you know, fraternities in other houses are buying it from my roommate.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm having him handle everything.
[SPEAKER_01]: I remember I'm this athlete.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can't be doing this.
[SPEAKER_03]: Got it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's literally dropping off ounces at the, you know, the, the, the TKO house of the Zeta's house, the Sigma Kai house, the SE house and, like, And it's the mostly cocaine.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, everything, whatever you want.
[SPEAKER_00]: You want to actually see we got that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Did you get into hard shit like heroin?

[SPEAKER_01]: Rachel you know what I told myself I said I'm going to do this just to keep up with the Jones' in college because this is how I'm going to be able to pay to go out on a date with this already girl or take out my football teammates or my my fraternity rather is like I didn't fit in you know I'm this blue collar kid so I was like now I finally fit in and I agree what I did was wrong but it was like I'm surviving now and I told myself as soon as I'm done with the college like to graduate and get that degree and get

[SPEAKER_01]: Like this is what I went to USC for the connections.
[SPEAKER_00]: What did you graduate?
[SPEAKER_01]: I majored in public policy and planning with the emphasis in real estate development.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you were hoping to go into something?
[SPEAKER_01]: I was hoping to get real estate up.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then it happened.
[SPEAKER_01]: I literally, my first job out of college was for this big, big commercial real estate developer, big USC alumni, and he gave me like a six figure salary, and I was young, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm 21 years old.
[SPEAKER_01]: And like this is it.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is what we go to USC for.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't need to do anything else.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I worked and loved it and the recession hits.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, oh no, I lose my job and I start to scramble what I'm going to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just like I scrambleed for volleyball and made the football team.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just like I scrambleed to go down to Tijuana to get steroids to support my, you know, my life was like, okay, what am I going to do?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, okay, I love sports.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot of athletes.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know a lot of rich people now.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm with USC.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to do that.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to be a bookie.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you think a bookie, but a bookie for me is like, that's the perfect job for someone that's an athlete.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, but how did you know anything about it?
[SPEAKER_00]: Had you been a gambler?
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't, that's the thing.
[SPEAKER_01]: but I had what happened was one of the guys that was working on our project when I was working for the real estate development company he was a contractor and he was the contractor for all our development and I always saw him on the phone betting on the Dodgers and the Raiders and he's betting like $20,000 a game and I was like man whoever's on the other line he's making some serious money and I was like man when I heard that and I lost that job I was like
[SPEAKER_01]: whoever was on the other line yeah and I remember as like man who could I go to I said oh yeah we have a Italian friend in our family my dad's friend one of his fishing buddies was a bookie and he's a time dude I was like you know I'm gonna go ask my dad if I can get a job with that guy his name was Uncle Tony and Uncle Tony and Uncle Tony didn't want to want to do it my dad didn't want me
[SPEAKER_01]: So to get involved as a dad, I have no job.
[SPEAKER_01]: I just lost my job.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, it's temporary.
[SPEAKER_01]: Give me just give me like a year and I'll get back on my feet.
[SPEAKER_01]: I beg my dad and finally made the introduction in Uncle Tony.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like, man, your dad doesn't want me to do this, but I'm going to allow you to.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, Uncle Tony, I have the best network he wouldn't believe it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Now wait, for people listening and for me, for my ignorance, is there any part of being a bookie that is legal at the time?
[SPEAKER_01]: At the time, no.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was illegal.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's a gray area because you're basically taking bets through an online platform using the encostorika.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you're exchanging cash in the United States.
[SPEAKER_00]: And they didn't have like draft kings in that back then.
[SPEAKER_01]: Back then it was just street bookies, like mobsters, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I literally said, man, I'm going to show you how good I am.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, I'll pay you 20%.
[SPEAKER_01]: Whatever you bring, you get 20%.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was a kid.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: And literally in six months, I had this whale.
[SPEAKER_01]: I went to that contractor and he lost a million dollars.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and I was like, oh fuck, I'm 21 years old.
[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm 23 now, I'm like, wow, this is a lot of money.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I bring a million dollars, he gives me 200,000, right?
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, wow, that was pretty easy.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: That was just one guy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And opening your roll-tocks, all the guys you played with are now pros, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: You can big contracts.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I start using these pro athletes to gamble with me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I start using these fraternity kids, then I start bringing my clients that are betting with me like to meet the pro athletes because they're my friends.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, right.
[SPEAKER_01]: So it's like perfect to get to meet the guys that are betting on sports, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's cool.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like a casino host, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm offering everything from like, okay, you want a private jet to fly down to Costa Rica to visit my office.
[SPEAKER_01]: Okay, come on down in there.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I have this like, concierge business kind of that goes with it.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, I'm getting it.
[SPEAKER_00]: And did anything ever making nervous about that occupation?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, because it was just, you know, you do your searches and what can happen if you get in trouble.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's like a one to two-year charge, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so you are always looking at what the Yeah, I always think.
[SPEAKER_00]: The charge could be and kind of where you're pros and cons.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then eventually this this this guy didn't want it.
[SPEAKER_01]: This uncutony didn't want to bump my feet up.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was making him so much money.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, you got to give me more 20% sound doing it.

[SPEAKER_01]: Matt Boyer was actually a bookie, and he was a little older than me, and he was already taking bets, and he had an office in Costa Rica, and we were just exchanged information, and he started betting with me actually, and he had a gambling problem, and he ended up losing.
[SPEAKER_01]: He picked that back.
[SPEAKER_01]: He beat me for, I want to say, like 150,000, paid them.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then the next week he lost, I want to say, like 70 or 80,000, and he didn't pay me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh, hell no, this is like the cardinal rule, you don't, you don't just
[SPEAKER_01]: when and then the next week lose and no pay me the money I just gave you like that's stealing in my eyes, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he says, I'll be back.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm out of town.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, no, that's not going to work.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, I want my money.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, no, no, no, no.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'll be back.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he got back in a town.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, where's my money?
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, you know what?
[SPEAKER_01]: Why don't you come get us?
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, yeah, okay, what's the address?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I got in my range row.

[SPEAKER_01]: He said he put on his shoes, he got outside and I was just waiting for him because man, you got some balls.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said well, you got some balls to try to stiff me.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then we became friends ever since, like, who?
[SPEAKER_00]: No fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's so funny you tell me this story.
[SPEAKER_00]: He sat in your chair and told me the exact story, but I didn't know who you were.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, I didn't know that that was the story.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's me.

[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, OK, this makes sense.
[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so now for people listening, you cannot just go and get on an airplane with a bunch of money.
[SPEAKER_00]: We cannot stick it in a box and send it in the mail.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you have to figure out what is laundering, right, which is changing into something what tangible or changing the form of the money to get it out of your hands, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: You have to exchange the most hardest part of exchanging the Australian dollar into a US dollar.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I, you gotta remember, I have all this money, I gotta start exchanging it to US currency, because I can't take an Australian currency into the US.

[SPEAKER_01]: So now I'm exchanging and literally have fake IDs, I'm using up these exchange houses, and I run out of $100 bills and $50 bills from the US.
[SPEAKER_01]: So now I start exchanging for your own notes, because the your own note at the time was like 750,
[SPEAKER_01]: A $700, if you got a $500 euro note, which is very common, it's $750 U.S.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I was like, you know what, I know I can exchange your notes easier.
[SPEAKER_01]: I started buying the $500 euro note.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I'd buy like 20 of those every day, and I put them in comic books, and I'd take the comic book, and I'd put it in an eBay package, and I would vacuum seal it.
[SPEAKER_01]: So if you open it, you just see a comic book in a vacuum
[SPEAKER_01]: I literally started sending like five comic books a week out.
[SPEAKER_00]: Too ill have it.

[SPEAKER_00]: At some point, a guy named Robin Hood, 702, comes in your life.

[SPEAKER_00]: This becomes the worst person, I guess, that you've ever met in your life.

[SPEAKER_00]: Tell us what happened.
[SPEAKER_01]: So, no, this gambler, he's him and I go into a business agreement.
[SPEAKER_01]: I met through my girlfriend at the time, and she knew him from Vegas, and he was this supposedly this high roller.
[SPEAKER_01]: He was known for blackjack, and she told me I think this guy is the guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's a professional blackjack player, and he has this foundation, whatever.
[SPEAKER_01]: He goes in place, and basically he wins money on the table, and he donates money to a kid in need, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's so I meet this guy and he tells me his pitch and I say, it's great.
[SPEAKER_01]: What would you charge me to do this business?
[SPEAKER_01]: I have this gambling customer in Australia.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's losing a bunch of money and I need to get out of Australia.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, let's do 25%.
[SPEAKER_01]: and we agree on that and he flies over to Australia and we'll give him 1.5 million for the first test run.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he does great within 48 hours, he literally goes to the casino, he puts the money down, they give him chips and he starts playing at the table and about 2 hours later he just claps his hands and says, hey, I'm not feeling it, cash me out.
[SPEAKER_01]: And what do they do?
[SPEAKER_01]: They don't give you the chips back, they cash out with a check.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, got it, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So now he can take that check, and he can go to the sister casino and the Venetian or the Palazzo, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: And now he flies back with that check, to the US, goes to Las Vegas, and he's this high roller, they already know who he is.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so you were giving him 25%, you weren't asking him to gamble and make 25% do all these things that he ultimately ends up having some issues with.
[SPEAKER_00]: But okay, it's just in a word.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's a payment and everyone wins and he does it literally in like 48 hours.
[SPEAKER_00]: So it goes fine the first move.
[SPEAKER_00]: So you're like, this is, this is now the route for the guy.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm telling, I'll have you now.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, hey, this is the route.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is what we're going to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: This is so much faster than the Euro notes, the ugly boots, the gold, the silver.
[SPEAKER_01]: I had so many different ways I was doing it.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was just a headache, you know, to forever.

[SPEAKER_00]: And at this point, I had L, had L, have to go on anything from you.

[SPEAKER_01]: So that 1.5 literally got cleaned.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think he is commissioned on it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Was I want to say like 375 grand?
[SPEAKER_01]: He gives me money in the U.S. and I distribute that to El Hafe.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: So then we do a second run.
[SPEAKER_01]: He comes back.
[SPEAKER_01]: He wants to do 2.5 now and I give him 2.5 million and literally he gets to the casino the same way he's supposed to do it three hours later.

[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, gosh, that was fast.
[SPEAKER_01]: I answered he goes, we got a problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: I lost the money.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like, what do you mean, you lost the money?
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't have the money to lose.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can lose 25% right?
[SPEAKER_01]: That's your commission.
[SPEAKER_01]: Says I need you to bring me more money to win it back.
[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, no, I'm not bringing you any more money.
[SPEAKER_01]: In fact, I'm actually going to come and see if this guy stole the money because that's now my mind's thinking he stole my money.

[SPEAKER_00]: But there's like wins and lawsuits, right?

[SPEAKER_01]: So I sent my trainer and as soon as my trainer got to the hotel room, there was four police there waiting for him.

[SPEAKER_00]: So Robin Hood, what you had done is called the police.
[SPEAKER_01]: All the police.
[SPEAKER_00]: And so this is where this all starts to go south.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, they arrest Sean Carolyn, my trainer.
[SPEAKER_01]: They find the 700 grand.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now you're out another 700 to your 3.2 that you're out to the cartel.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, like, what were you doing?
[SPEAKER_01]: And Panicking.
[SPEAKER_01]: I think.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I did know what to do.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was like, oh fuck, like, I was freaking out.
[SPEAKER_01]: And my trainer gets out of jail.
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, dude, we have a problem.
[SPEAKER_01]: That Robinhood's singing like a canary.

[SPEAKER_00]: And Robinhood had left and gone back to America.
[SPEAKER_01]: Correct.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now you don't have a lot of people in the inner circle.

[SPEAKER_00]: Now you're thinking, how do I get back?

[SPEAKER_00]: he's not saying anything yet okay so he doesn't know yeah until yeah he doesn't know and I'm not telling him right so from what I understand you start to involve some other people because you need to get that 700 thousand dollars and some guy comes up with a cock and made me story that it says maybe it's not cock maybe but it's seem pretty
[SPEAKER_00]: pretty good to the time and attorney that said it was his money and he all these people just want to percentage and this is why they get involved and agree to lie right but I guess the negative in this is that now you've opened up this lie to so many people that it causes some problems.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, it causes a lot of problems because now we're trying to get the 700 grand that got picked off back and this this lawyer made me go tell this fake make believe story to law enforcement in the United States, which was like, you know, and in my business, you never go to law enforcement ever like that's the real number one, but then the attorney says it's not a it's not a US matters to worry about it.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I took his legal advice, because he's an attorney, and I talked about this fake story of how the money was given.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was all a few days, he was all lies.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, watch the documentary.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and again, because I don't want to get too into it, because it's so good and fine.
[SPEAKER_00]: So now, eventually, you get caught.
[SPEAKER_00]: And actually, I want people to see the documentary for that, too.
[SPEAKER_00]: But let's talk about prison for a month.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tell me about what it's like to have those doors slam and you hear what you have 21 years?
[SPEAKER_01]: 21 years, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so you're in there and you're like, fuck are you crying?
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you like, holy shit my life's over?
[SPEAKER_00]: I want to kill myself, like, what are you thinking?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well remember, Dad said we don't cry.
[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't cry.
[SPEAKER_00]: I'm trying to shower.
[SPEAKER_01]: You cry in the shower, yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I played it like a basketball game.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's four quarters.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I said in myself five years is first quarter, you know, 10 years is that you're a half time.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I woke up every day and I'd said, man, it's time to rehabilitate, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: The judge told me this is 21 years to rehabilitate.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I took that serious.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I went in there and I was like, okay, most 90% of people in here are just eating soups.
[SPEAKER_01]: All day laying on their bed depressed, I'm like, this is not gonna be me.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're not gonna break me.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, I'm an athlete, I'm not gonna break.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you work out?
[SPEAKER_01]: I worked out out every day.
[SPEAKER_00]: They have a gym or like you just know, a lot of calisthenics.
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, eventually I did find a prison that had a gym, but it took a while to get there.
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of calisthenics, a lot of pull-ups, a lot of push-ups, dips, stuff off your toilet, you know, you're doing like, inverted push-ups off your toilet seat.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get outside, can you work out?
[SPEAKER_01]: You get outside like one hour in the morning, one hour at night, and I'm running.
[SPEAKER_00]: And the food, how do you combat dealing with food, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: That's awful.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're getting your 2,000 calories, but it's coming from like carbohydrates.
[SPEAKER_01]: Got it.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's our with garbage.
[SPEAKER_00]: Are you making friends?
[SPEAKER_01]: You don't want to make friends in prison, but you're making acquaintances, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: So you're lonely.
[SPEAKER_01]: Of course you're lonely, but you're meeting people that are part of your race.
[SPEAKER_01]: I can prison, you can't be part of the blacks or the Mexicans, the guys that I've played sports with my whole life, you have to be with your own race.
[SPEAKER_01]: So since I'm white, I have to run with the whites.
[SPEAKER_01]: There's politics in prison.
[SPEAKER_00]: What was the worst thing that happened to you in prison?
[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, for me, the worst thing was, you know, being during COVID, they literally had us lockdown for like nearly almost two years in, or I think we had one shower a week, we're in our six by eight cell for 23 and a half hours a day.
[SPEAKER_01]: Do you be?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, TV.
[SPEAKER_01]: Books?
[SPEAKER_01]: No.
[SPEAKER_01]: You could get books, but the worst part was just like the meals, like box lunches, just for literally like a year and a half.
[SPEAKER_01]: No coffee, nothing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, but that doesn't sound terrible.
[SPEAKER_00]: But even if you told me to sit in this room for a week and not leave, like I would have a panic attack, yeah, imagine.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can't move.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's awful.
[SPEAKER_00]: And do you have a roommate at the time?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, you have, you always have a roommate.
[SPEAKER_00]: Like play cards?
[SPEAKER_01]: I would, yeah, I mean, you can only do so much.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God.
[SPEAKER_01]: You gotta remember the toilets in the room.
[SPEAKER_01]: So when you have to use the restroom, you just right next to his head.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like his beds right next to the toilet seat.
[SPEAKER_00]: Were you on the top?
[SPEAKER_01]: Always the top.
[SPEAKER_00]: Why?
[SPEAKER_01]: because what happens is if you're on the bottom and someone's like up top and eating that are dandruff or whatever, it's coming down on the guy below.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that's my thing.
[SPEAKER_00]: Got it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So your personality and your hustle comes out and you start to run a business in there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I went back to school.
[SPEAKER_01]: Actually, I got a master's degree.

[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I started writing my book The California Kid and then I was like, okay, now what am I going to do?

[SPEAKER_01]: How am I going to use it?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I started a business, and it was actually a mistake.
[SPEAKER_01]: I didn't know I was going to start this business until it happened.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was an accident.
[SPEAKER_01]: I started taking my protein shakes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And what I would do is I take an empty peanut butter jar, I put a bag of milk in there, because in prison you get bags of milk.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I put a bag of milk in there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I would slice up bananas.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I put a little peanut butter from the commissary.
[SPEAKER_01]: And we got these cheap protein shakes.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I throw them in there.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'd shake them up like a shake.
[SPEAKER_01]: But you can shake.
[SPEAKER_01]: And in prison, we don't have refrigeration.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we use a mop bucket, and you fill it with ice.
[SPEAKER_01]: And so every day I put my protein shake on ice, so when I worked out in my crew, I'd come back and I drank the protein shake.
[SPEAKER_01]: I get back one day, and my cellys says, hey, we have no ice, that ice machine's broken.
[SPEAKER_01]: He says, there's like two inches left.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, well, what do you want to do?
[SPEAKER_01]: He goes, if we put some salt on there, it'll keep a cold, it will be good.
[SPEAKER_01]: So as I carried it, throw some salt.
[SPEAKER_01]: So we throw some salt.
[SPEAKER_01]: I go work out four hours later.
[SPEAKER_01]: I come back, and my cellys say, grab your shake.
[SPEAKER_01]: I grab my shake, and it's frozen.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I own ice, it's frozen, and he's like, just eat it, so I eat it.
[SPEAKER_01]: It's like protein ice cream.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, he said, told you it was good on.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, do the ding ding ding, like this bell went off in my head, this hustle mentality.
[SPEAKER_01]: I have, like, dude, ice cream in prison, like this is going to be my hustle.
[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I wanted to see if it would work.
[SPEAKER_01]: So I made seven, one day.
[SPEAKER_01]: and I gave them to all my work out crew and a couple of guys in the cells and they're like, dude, this is awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: They're like, you should sell it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, what am I going to sell it for?
[SPEAKER_01]: And I was like, you know what, I'm just going to say $15 because I don't really want to make it, but as like, if someone pays $15 for this, it costs me $1.50 to make.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, that's a thousand percent.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you eat salad within the prison.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, that's not allowed.
[SPEAKER_00]: OK, oh.
[SPEAKER_00]: So, but up until then, how does it work?
[SPEAKER_00]: Your dad's putting money in the curfew.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, yeah, I work and I'm making gloves for the U.S. military.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a sewer.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so I would sew like the fingers on the gloves.
[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It was like a machine or a school.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you learn how to do that there?
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: OK, so I saw from the, from the docu series, you have like a Butler.
[SPEAKER_01]: I had a prison Butler.
[SPEAKER_00]: Prison Butler.
[SPEAKER_01]: Prison Butler is a cheap.

[SPEAKER_01]: It's like $5 a week.
[SPEAKER_00]: great.
[SPEAKER_01]: They do anything.
[SPEAKER_01]: They make my meal prep.

[SPEAKER_00]: So you have like a staff working.

[SPEAKER_00]: You're starting to make a lot of money.
[SPEAKER_01]: I start making these ice cream now in the regular.
[SPEAKER_01]: I got like five employees and we're all making these ice creams in the mop buckets and we're shaking these things and we're selling them for football games.

[SPEAKER_00]: And, all right, so you're doing well.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you're kind of, I would say that.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like, you've well, you found a purpose.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, that was fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: And you find out, again, this is long story short, you find out you're getting out early.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: It's been nine and a half years.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you flip out?
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, when you found out that ultimate phone call, okay, you're going to be out of here.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I was like, you got goosebumps.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're like, what?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Did you ever think that would happen?
[SPEAKER_01]: No, no, not at all.
[SPEAKER_01]: It was like literally people, I say, you won the lottery in life, I did.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: No doubt.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get out.
[SPEAKER_00]: And what made you think, oh, I want to continue doing this ice cream thing?
[SPEAKER_01]: Well, everyone's like, what do you want to do?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm sitting in the halfway house, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, man, what am I going to do?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to pick the felon.
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I start doing some homework.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm like, there's nobody that makes a protein ice cream.
[SPEAKER_01]: Why is that?
[SPEAKER_01]: And then I remember talking to my friend and well, there's like halo, but I think it's like four flavors.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm supporting persevering.
[SPEAKER_01]: What's okay?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's not a lot.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and they don't even have a lot of flavor.
[SPEAKER_00]: They don't taste like that.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I call my buddy from literally from from here in Florida, and he's in a
[SPEAKER_01]: He's in Fort Lauderdale, and I tell him what I was doing, and he's like, well, how was prison?
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, you know, prison sucks, man.
[SPEAKER_01]: But as a man, I was hustling, protein ice cream, like I used to sell that cocaine.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's like, really?
[SPEAKER_01]: He's like, dude, why don't you start a protein ice cream brand?
[SPEAKER_01]: There's nobody out here that has it.
[SPEAKER_01]: And like, I was like, how will we do that?
[SPEAKER_01]: And he put together this team.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it was awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: My buddy Roland came through and he got me a CEO with the law degree to help me so I don't get in trouble again.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And he's got me a branding guy and he was the legitimate one.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, a legitimate one.
[SPEAKER_00]: So where what is it called?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's called California Ice Protein.
[SPEAKER_00]: And it's sold where?
[SPEAKER_01]: It's sold in an over 150 stores in gyms in Florida.
[SPEAKER_01]: Miami mostly.
[SPEAKER_03]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_01]: How many pounds of protein?
[SPEAKER_01]: 20 grams of protein per bar.
[SPEAKER_01]: I actually bought you some.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, so it's great.
[SPEAKER_01]: We direct consumer, door to door, you go online.
[SPEAKER_01]: You can buy six, four packs, and we send them straight to you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right, I love it.
[SPEAKER_00]: Two things.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've lived such a big life, an extraordinary life, and you have that addiction, I would say, two things that give you that rush, and your a hustler.
[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I get it, I'm the same one.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, what is going to keep you away from the gambling and the booking and because these are all easy ways for you to just make that money back really.
[SPEAKER_01]: The easy scores.
[SPEAKER_01]: I already the judge already told by lawyer if if I ever see Mr. Hanson my courtroom again, he's getting a life sentence.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's enough right there.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And to be honest, I don't.
[SPEAKER_01]: I don't have that urge.
[SPEAKER_01]: I have a new, like, my new rush is, like, speaking now, telling people about what I went through.
[SPEAKER_01]: And when I get in front of like 100 guys on a football team or 50 guys on a baseball team run, I'm telling them my story and their jaws are on the ground because they can't believe it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I tell them, like, hey, just just gambling guys, you guys get involved in throwing a game or doing something illegal, I said, this is where it started for me.
[SPEAKER_01]: and I had to work him for the biggest cartel in the world.
[SPEAKER_01]: I said, you guys don't want to go down that path.
[SPEAKER_01]: It happens to athletes because we love adrenaline.
[SPEAKER_01]: We love to win.
[SPEAKER_01]: And it's just a lesson learned like I, that's my new rush.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just watching these kids face is going wow.
[SPEAKER_01]: And just seeing them one speak to me and ask questions after.
[SPEAKER_00]: So are you gonna try and start going on an official speaking tour and get a manager for all that?
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I would like to.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've been doing it.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've probably spoke to three, four colleges already.
[SPEAKER_01]: Law enforcement has hired me now, I just speak for them.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've probably got like six bookings for next year already.
[SPEAKER_01]: And they're they're awesome.
[SPEAKER_01]: They love, they love to hear my story.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think they like to see how my mind works because it's, you know, I was a legitimate kingpin and I want to see like what were your routes into other countries, what were your ideas, what made you do this.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think my knowledge is pretty decent.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I think I can help them.
[SPEAKER_01]: And you know, it gave me a second chance in life.
[SPEAKER_01]: I tell people if they didn't arrest me out,
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: And as long as you look at it, that time in prison was your time out to like think about what, you know, to kind of recalibrate your your mind to be like, what am I going to do going forward?
[SPEAKER_00]: Which, you know, brings me to one of my last questions, which is like really now you're free, right?
[SPEAKER_00]: You could have spent another 10 years in prison at this point.
[SPEAKER_00]: And who knows what could have gone wrong in there and you in there longer, whatever.
[SPEAKER_00]: What are you going to do with your freedom?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like your dad sort of says this in the docu-series and it gives me goosebumps to hear your dad be like, I was so nervous, like, what are you going to do?
[SPEAKER_00]: But it's like, what's your bucket list?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, do you want to be working for a company?
[SPEAKER_00]: You obviously have personality and skill.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm never going to work for a company.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to be the company.
[SPEAKER_01]: I want to be the Jeff Bezos of Protein and I'm a hustler.
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm going to get to the top.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I like nice things, no doubt, but I don't need those things.
[SPEAKER_01]: I've lived that life.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I wake up every morning and people like, do you ever have bad days anywhere I go to?
[SPEAKER_01]: You guys don't even know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like every day I wake up, I have to pinch myself.
[SPEAKER_01]: Because you're like, am I really out?
[SPEAKER_01]: Right now, I'm like, it's, I won the lottery.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And I just, you know, I don't care about the money.
[SPEAKER_01]: Like I've lived that life.
[SPEAKER_01]: I know it's going to come eventually because my mentality, my household mentality, is not going to just let me be down here.
[SPEAKER_01]: forever, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: But it's a humbling experience and I needed that because if I didn't have it, I want to be here today.
[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Last question.
[SPEAKER_00]: What is the most misunderstood thing about what you've been through or about you in general?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not a violent person, you know, I'm a big teddy bear.
[SPEAKER_01]: I tell people I'm a quality bear, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: I'm like, I've never heard anybody, you know, I'm people all you threaten, listen, no one ever got hurt.
[SPEAKER_01]: I threaten Robin Hood.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, he lost 2.5 million dollars, but no one ever got hurt.
[SPEAKER_03]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the way we collect money is it's a scare tactic that get paid.
[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
[SPEAKER_01]: And the damn I'm a big quality bear.
[UNKNOWN]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Tell people where they can, again, remind them where they can get your ice cream, where they can buy your book, and where they can see the docu series.

[SPEAKER_01]: They covered every base to the tea.
[SPEAKER_01]: That's the real story.
[SPEAKER_01]: If anybody wants to read these other articles out there, those aren't real stories.
[SPEAKER_01]: The real story had to be told through me.
[SPEAKER_01]: I was involved and I couldn't speak on my story until I got released.
[SPEAKER_01]: My case was over.
[SPEAKER_01]: And finally, when Wahlberg's team came, they did fact checks for literally like three years to make sure all this was accurate.
[SPEAKER_00]: But have you ever met Mark of you?
[SPEAKER_01]: Just through Zoom's.
[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, I'm sure we're going to meet one day.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're going to do the, um, they're working on like a pre-development of the scripted series.
[SPEAKER_01]: So that would be fun.
[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and I guess, sorry, one more question.
[SPEAKER_00]: What would be your advice for someone who is getting, do going on this path?
[SPEAKER_00]: Like, what, what is your biggest regret that you want to tell people about now?
[SPEAKER_01]: not being myself, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of kids experience this because they're trying to fit in and they don't try to be someone they're not.
[SPEAKER_01]: Just be yourself, right?
[SPEAKER_01]: If I was myself and went down that street in the Aropath and then crossed over until the lack of activity because I want to be somebody else.
[SPEAKER_01]: You know, you're not going to get in trouble.
[SPEAKER_01]: And that's my advice is be yourself.
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't cut corners in life and try to be someone you're not.
[UNKNOWN]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: But I love that you've been to the bottom of the barrel.
[SPEAKER_00]: You know how to climb back out.
[SPEAKER_01]: You're just only one way up right here.
[SPEAKER_01]: We're at rock bottom right now.
[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
[SPEAKER_00]: But like good for you.
[SPEAKER_00]: You said before we started, you know, I said, do you have a girlfriend?
[SPEAKER_00]: You're like, who's going to want to date me?
[SPEAKER_00]: Look at you.
[SPEAKER_00]: Your gorgeous.
[SPEAKER_00]: You obviously have a good head on your shoulder.
[SPEAKER_00]: You've been through a lot of shit.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to find your way out.
[SPEAKER_00]: You're going to make somebody very happy.
[SPEAKER_00]: And I hope one day you have a...
[SPEAKER_00]: wonderful wife and kids and you know you can give that to your dad and you know like that would be something really important and share your life with someone because I feel like a lot of your story you've been on your own and you've been alone even though you're doing so much and that kind of makes me sad for you and I cannot wait for the time when you
[SPEAKER_00]: you feel like you have a person of your own and kids of your own that you can like share what a great guy you are and give them those skills.
[SPEAKER_00]: You have some real skills that clearly you shouldn't be ashamed about.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_00]: Used to been wrong ways we all have in some way or another and it's awesome that here you are.
[SPEAKER_00]: You get a second chance and you're making the best of it.
[SPEAKER_00]: So honestly I wish you the best of all.
