Hour 3 – Mac McClung, Dan Hurley

The Dan Patrick Show

All-time G-League leading scorer and three-time NBA dunk contest champion, Mac McClung joins the Dan Patrick Show and discusses what it’s like to take the scoring record, bouncing around on 10-day contracts with the NBA and fighting for roster spots, plus why other players didn’t want to go against him in the dunk contest. UConn Men’s Head Basketball Coach Dan Hurley sits down with Dan and explains how he’s never gotten a technical foul in an NCAA Tournament game despite his fiery reputation, and what Michigan State coach Tom Izzo told him when Hurley was considering the Lakers job.

Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio.

00:00:04
Speaker 2: Final Hour on this Thursday. It'll be busy Yukon head coach Dan Hurley will stop by and we'll talk to Mac McClung, of course, the slam dunk champion and now the all time leading scorer in the G League. Baseball opening Day, you'll find it on NBC and Peacock. It'll be the Pirates Paul Skeens visiting the Mets. Then in primetime the Diamondbacks against the Dodgers. That'll be tonight on NBC and Peacock eight seven to seven to three DP show more phone calls coming up. Seaton.

00:00:34
Speaker 3: Whole question for the final hour is what Yeah, we got a bunch of them up there right now. NFL season opener on a Wednesday night. Most people really don't care. Followed very closely though I hate it, few people love it. Let's see we put up a controversial one here, which clip cost us the emmitt of the five options that we have, Dan telling Derek Henry he'll get into a Sandler movie. Bo Jackson discussing the importance of colon cancer screening, Mez showing PAULI how to chop Dan reacting to Michael Jordan's take on loaded management or Matt Friend doing impressions right now, Matt Friend doing impressions has a pretty good lead on things. Oh, it's a.

00:01:18
Speaker 2: Complicated poll question though, so that's a tough one.

00:01:20
Speaker 3: And then we also put up there the best places to watch baseball are called park, field or stadium. Yeah, you know Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Wrigley Field, those kinds of things. Park right now is leading with fifty nine percent of the vote, followed by field and then stadium.

00:01:39
Speaker 2: Yankees over the Giant seven nothing in the season opener last night in San Francisco, Aaron Judge oh for five with four strikeouts. Sweet sixteen starts tonight. It'll be Texas, Perdue, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Arizona, Illinois, and Houston. He's Mac McClung. He is a part of the Windy City Bulls and the all time leading scorer in G League history. Were you aware of that record the other night when you put up fifty.

00:02:06
Speaker 4: Nine, Yeah, it was a really cool moment.

00:02:10
Speaker 3: Man.

00:02:10
Speaker 5: I think my teammates they were they're like, you're getting this record tonight. So they had my support and they really wanted me to break it, so it was a really cool moment.

00:02:19
Speaker 2: Man, how much could you score in a game?

00:02:24
Speaker 5: The fifty nine was pretty exhausting, so I don't know. I don't know how much more I could do than that, So I'd probably say that's close to my limit.

00:02:33
Speaker 2: So you can't go eighty three like Bam out of Bayo.

00:02:37
Speaker 5: I haven't done it yet, man, I don't know. That's that's incredibly impressive, I think, no matter what the situation is, So that's that was really cool.

00:02:45
Speaker 2: What are you told? Because we see your abilities? But what do teams tell you when you get a ten day contract or you're brought up for a little while and then you go back to the G League.

00:02:56
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's kind of different in every situation, you know. I think, you know, being in this situation where you're fighting to find a roster spot, you different teams need different things. So whatever it is, I try to adapt and do that, you know. And it's been tough, man. A lot of times I've I've been told, you know, you're an NBA player like a coach. I had actually one year, you know, being on a two way year at the bottom of the roster. You made the roster, but you're kind of the guy that goes back and forth. And I had a coach tell me one year, He's like, man, you're an NBA player, Like all you need is an opportunity, and like almost like was laughing.

00:03:29
Speaker 4: I was like, well, you got to give.

00:03:30
Speaker 2: Me that opportunity.

00:03:34
Speaker 5: Really, I'm just trying to make the most of whatever this situation is. It's tough, man.

00:03:38
Speaker 2: Well you hear about you don't play defense, or you're not good at playing defense, you're not good off the ball, like these are things that have been said. Are those fair? Those fair criticisms?

00:03:52
Speaker 5: You know, my two games this year when I got called up at the beginning of the year where I got legitim minutes, I was actually eat in the league and steels.

00:04:01
Speaker 4: So I don't know if I agree with that totally. So it's tough. There's always gonna be something, man.

00:04:06
Speaker 5: I felt like, that's the thing I've been trying to do in the G League is just show like, oh you said this wasn't that That's well that's not the case.

00:04:12
Speaker 4: And some people are always going to say certain things, man.

00:04:15
Speaker 5: But I've really got a lot of love and respect from you know, peers, in the league that I really appreciate and coaches in the league that I really looked up too. So I think just just trying to find that opportunity in that right situation.

00:04:27
Speaker 2: Man, what was your welcome to the NBA moment?

00:04:31
Speaker 4: I would say with.

00:04:32
Speaker 5: The with the Lakers, that was where I started, and that team was Lebron, Carmelo Rondo, Dwight Howard, and I was just like, I'm this kid from this small talent gate city. I'm like, what amy in some video game right now? So that that was shocking and something I had to adjust to for a couple of days.

00:04:48
Speaker 2: Did you get to keep the uniform?

00:04:51
Speaker 6: Yeah?

00:04:51
Speaker 5: Absolutely. I always always try to make sure I keep that and have it. You know, some of my kids hopefully can see it one day.

00:04:57
Speaker 2: Do you introduce yourself to Lebron or does he say Alo to you?

00:05:03
Speaker 5: I would I definitely introduce myself, and yeah, I don't think he in that situation he would ever have to introduce himself to me. So yeah, it was an honor being just a part of that and getting to see some things.

00:05:15
Speaker 2: But are you starstruck on the floor when you're playing, Like I'm guarding this guy that I grew up watching Did you have that moment?

00:05:23
Speaker 4: I think in my first year, you know, you just adjusted that.

00:05:26
Speaker 5: I think at the end of the day, we're all competitors and you want to win, and you kind of flip that switch once you get on the floor. But there's a level of respect, you know, when you're a little kid and you watch someone and they mean something to you, they make you love the game that you're always going to have for those people.

00:05:40
Speaker 2: Do you think you're too good at dunking that it overshadowed you as a basketball player, that maybe you were looked at as he does that and not maybe being fair to your actual basketball game.

00:05:53
Speaker 5: I think that that could be maybe something from the outside of eye. But like these scouts and these teams, like their job is to know basketball players. So I think anybody that like knows basketball like that is just something I got to be a part of, and I'm incredibly grateful for I lean into it, you know, like that was such a cool thing that I got to do. There's I'm never gonna be like, oh man, I hate dunking now because of that, Like that's a beautiful part.

00:06:18
Speaker 4: Of my life.

00:06:18
Speaker 5: And I think, you know, the people that really love basketball and into basketball, Like that's just a part of me.

00:06:23
Speaker 4: That's not really who I am.

00:06:25
Speaker 2: He's Mac McClung, the Windy City Bulls.

00:06:28
Speaker 7: Uh.

00:06:28
Speaker 2: But why not be in the Slam Dunk Contest this year?

00:06:33
Speaker 5: Well, they quite frankly, they didn't really want me in it this year, so that was it was like a they wanted me in it, and then some things happened, and uh, you know, it kind of just went back and forth and at the end they kind of didn't want me in the contest.

00:06:47
Speaker 4: So I'd already prepared.

00:06:48
Speaker 5: That's why I released those dunks on social media, because I'd already prepared. And I was like, well, you know, I teamed up with a company marketing, and I was like, well, I might as well make the most of this.

00:06:59
Speaker 2: But I'm just was it you weren't on a roster or is that why they didn't want to in the slam Dunk Contest?

00:07:07
Speaker 4: No?

00:07:07
Speaker 5: I made the Chicago Bulls roster maybe a little bit before that, So I don't know they told me that it was. It was just it was a weird situation, man. I think they they said a couple of guys didn't.

00:07:21
Speaker 4: Want to do it.

00:07:22
Speaker 5: If I was in it and I was like, Okay, well I don't want to ruin that, and hey.

00:07:25
Speaker 2: What what Why wouldn't they want to be in there because they you were going to win?

00:07:31
Speaker 5: I don't know, man, I feel like these a lot of these guys are really talented, so that wouldn't make sense to me. I mean a lot of things in this league don't make sense a lot of time.

00:07:40
Speaker 4: I'm just going with the flow, man, I really am just going with the flow.

00:07:43
Speaker 8: Off.

00:07:43
Speaker 2: How would you do Michael Jordan in his prime you in your prime slam dunk contest?

00:07:51
Speaker 4: That's a tough question, Dan.

00:07:52
Speaker 5: I think, uh, the times have changed, like kind of like in the game of basketball, like everything progresses. So I think if Michael Jordan was in this era, he would probably have so much different dunks and so many creative things. So, I mean I would I think I'd be a little crazy to say I'd take over MJ like that, man, so and I got a lot of so much respect and love for him. I would never say that I'd beat him, but it'd be fun.

00:08:15
Speaker 4: I would. I would definitely take the challenge. It'd be a lot of fun.

00:08:18
Speaker 5: Have you met him, No, never met himj before to be super cool.

00:08:22
Speaker 2: Though, can you leave from the foul line?

00:08:28
Speaker 5: My my best jumps are off two feet When I was in high school, man, when I was when I was younger, I used to.

00:08:33
Speaker 2: Be wasn't that long ago, Matt.

00:08:40
Speaker 4: Years to everyone you are.

00:08:42
Speaker 2: You were really you've got you got like viral famous in high school, it was like Zion Williamson, this guy. You know, everybody wanted to see those videos, like did you feel like a star when you were in high school?

00:08:57
Speaker 4: That was some crazy, crazy times I was.

00:09:00
Speaker 5: I was in a town of fifteen hundred people, so everybody already kind of knew me. And it was the cool part about it was when we would travel to different schools, they would like school would like shut down early because people would be outside waiting for the games. And it kind of felt like we were the kind of like this band that was traveling. It was like me and my best friends. Man, it was such a cool experience.

00:09:20
Speaker 4: And you know you go on YouTube and be like, oh, that got two million views last night. It's just it was it was.

00:09:25
Speaker 5: So weird being from a small town and like getting that attention. Man, But it was really cool for me my friends.

00:09:30
Speaker 2: So it was boy band, you were like, you know, new kids on the block or one dementia one h what is it? One direction?

00:09:38
Speaker 4: Yeah, we weren't that cool, but we were good. It really did make us feel good.

00:09:44
Speaker 2: So what's the future? What are you twenty seven?

00:09:46
Speaker 4: Twenty seven years old? The future?

00:09:49
Speaker 6: For me?

00:09:50
Speaker 4: Man, I'm not sure.

00:09:51
Speaker 5: I've really like kind of going back to this situation and the record and my G League career, Like, all I've tried to do done I will try to do is is make the most of wherever I'm at in that moment, and whether that be the dunk contest, the opportunity I was getting with that, or being in the G League. I've I've just tried to make the most of the situation. So I'm not attached to the outcome, but just whatever happens is. I really truly believe I'm not a victim of anything, man. So whatever happens is is how it's supposed to be. Official height and weight I'm measured to have to come out.

00:10:22
Speaker 4: I measured six to two.

00:10:24
Speaker 2: Okay, maybe it looks better when you're shorter, Like if you're six six doing that, it's not as impressive.

00:10:34
Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe I maybe wish I was six six, that would probably give me.

00:10:40
Speaker 2: But if you're six six, you're not winning the Slam Dunk Contest, but you're playing in the NBA.

00:10:46
Speaker 4: There we go. Well, that's that's the interesting trade off.

00:10:49
Speaker 2: Hey, it's been fun, been entertaining. I hope you get that true shot where you get to actually play and uh, you know, prove a lot of these people wrong. So congratulations on the scoring record.

00:11:02
Speaker 4: Dan, I really appreciate it. Man, I appreciate you having me on. Thank you very much.

00:11:05
Speaker 2: It's Mac McClung. He's the all time leading scorer in G League history. And I was looking at some of the things that analysts will say or scouts will say with Mac, and you know, not a consistent outside shooter, not good off the ball. He's really good with the ball in his hands. And of course they bring up defense, like defense is tricky because are you good on the ball, are you good playing the passing lanes? Now, Iverson wasn't good on the ball as much as he was playing passing lanes. You know, Gary Payton was good on the ball. Like there's certain guys on the ball and they played the passing lanes. But you know, with Mac as he's saying, look, I was leading the team and steals, you know, And I thought maybe he could be And I hate the stereotype, but like he could be a Peyton Pritchard. But you know that second unit coming in giving you energy there. But Peyton Pritchard can play on the ball. He can have the ball and be off the ball. He can be a catch and shoot guy. And I think, but I still like the Brooklyn Nets. Nobody cares about the Brooklyn Nets if you had Mac there and just say go out there and be Iverson. By the way, broke Iverson's state record scoring when he was in high school. And some of those videos with him, I mean he is attacking people when he's dunking. He's dunking in trash. Show me a great dunker. I'll show you a great dunker who dunks in traffic.

00:12:36
Speaker 9: Yeah, Paulie, like you said, this guy's been around a long time. Those McClung highlights on social media. That was ten years ago, and he got really well known, went to Georgetown for a bit. It's just a weird thing how some players can't stick. It's apples and oranges. But like Jimmer Fredett, Yeah, Jimmer Furdett started seven NBA games. He played a few places and got a little bit of run, but never a commitment.

00:12:58
Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, you know, and we always go, oh, you know, Jimmer Fode could be Steph Curry. No, he could. Steph Curry is one of the great ball handlers of all time, one of the quickest shots of all time. Jim er had range. Jimmer was great in college. Yes, Marv and Mac and Jimmer.

00:13:21
Speaker 10: The big thing that they have in common besides you know what, is they're smaller shooting guards. Yeah, so I think that's the thing in macket it on head. If he was six six, there's not a question of whether he's on the NBA roster too. And also he's a guy with the who's ball dominant and in the NBA it's a lot of I have the star, but I need you to catch and shoot and make fifty percent of those three point shots that you'd take in a game.

00:13:46
Speaker 2: Yeah, and you'd have to have him be Allen Iverson where you say you're going to be our our point guard, but you're our scoring guard as well, and you let him have the ball. Most teams aren't going to allow that to happen, and at this age of his career, it's not going to happen. But if I'm Brooklyn, I bring him in last couple of weeks of the season. I have some fun, Yes, Mar he'd be like Donovan Mitchell, Donovan Mitchell, Yeah, I know, yeah, but he's he's a build and he's solid six two. Yes, Paulie mac.

00:14:19
Speaker 9: McClung should have pretended to be European coming out.

00:14:21
Speaker 2: Of high school.

00:14:22
Speaker 9: He sounds Irish, even Northern Irish.

00:14:26
Speaker 2: Uh mclungovich, mclungovich.

00:14:29
Speaker 9: Like Nick Stauskis, if it was nik.

00:14:33
Speaker 2: Nick, if it's nic k, you know, then we'd know American. But he was in I K.

00:14:40
Speaker 9: Yes, and he was born in Canada. That helped a lot.

00:14:44
Speaker 2: Yeah, well it didn't help that much. I think Sacramento took him what sixth overall, eighth overall to your Kings, Yike? You loved it, yeah, Nick Stauskis, because all right, that was fun. I mean I watched G League and he went fifty four, then he went fifty nine. It's I don't care where you're doing it. You're putting up points against guys who were great in high school, probably really good in college and he's averaging thirty points a game. All right, we'll take a break. We'll talk to Yukon head coach Dan Hurley. More of your phone calls as well in this final hour on this Thursday. We're back after this.

00:15:25
Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app.

00:15:35
Speaker 2: Paully Fools Gohea with Tony Foosco.

00:15:37
Speaker 11: Yeah, as everybody knows, one of the hosts of the award winning Paully and Tony Foosco Show. Yeah, but instead of us telling you how great we are, here's how Dan Patrick described us when he came on our show.

00:15:47
Speaker 2: Quick, knowledgeable and funny, opinionated.

00:15:50
Speaker 6: What are you doing interrupting our promo?

00:15:53
Speaker 1: Yeah, it wasn't talking about you.

00:15:55
Speaker 8: You took those clips totally out of context.

00:15:57
Speaker 11: Oh yeah, Well, after this promo, I'm gonna to take you out and beat you.

00:16:01
Speaker 2: Let me put this into context.

00:16:03
Speaker 1: Shut up.

00:16:04
Speaker 11: Yeah, anyway, just listen to the Paul Atoni Fusco Show on IoT Radio, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:16:10
Speaker 2: Ye sweet sixteen tonight it'll be Texas Purdue, Iowa, Nebraska, Arkansas, Arizona, Illinois, and Houston. The marquee matchup or one of the marquee matchups on Friday night will be Michigan State and Yukon. That will be in Washington, DC. Head coach of the Yukon Huskies, Dan Hurley on his best behavior so far no technicals? Is this a concerted effort to be on your best behavior here?

00:16:41
Speaker 8: Not really, I'm pretty oblivious, you know, to the circumstances.

00:16:47
Speaker 6: But you know, maybe I don't know.

00:16:49
Speaker 8: I don't think I've ever gotten a technical in an ENCLA tournament game. I would have to have my stat group, so I don't know, you know, maybe this time of year, everyone knows that everyone's watching, so you know, the referees also got to be careful that they don't give me a week technical.

00:17:07
Speaker 2: Oh I hope I didn't jinx you here for tomorrow night. Yeah, Mick Cronin got one for clapping.

00:17:15
Speaker 6: Yeah. I was pleasantly surprised.

00:17:18
Speaker 8: I didn't know what the obviously the prop bets, well, I'm sure there were lots of them on.

00:17:23
Speaker 6: I don't know what I went off at, but somebody wants some money.

00:17:29
Speaker 2: Are you now Dan Hurley, like Danny Hurley, is that that's a previous life.

00:17:35
Speaker 8: No, I think, uh maybe when I get in my sixties, I'll go back to Danny. When I want to feel younger because I'm old, maybe seventies, I'll go back to Danny.

00:17:45
Speaker 2: Okay, all right, I know that you've reached out to a lot of people when you consider the Lakers job. You reached out to Tom Izzo, who you face tomorrow night. What did coach say, because I know he was thinking about going to the Cavaliers the uh what was that the year that Lebron left the Cavaliers. He was going to win and coach? So what advice did he give you on the Lakers?

00:18:07
Speaker 6: John?

00:18:08
Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, you know, coaches though he uh he walked me through just you know, his his thought process when he went through, uh you know, like the you know, the decision making of of of making that move to the NBA and and the pros and cons and uh, you know he obviously you know at that time, you know, college was very different, and uh, you know the point that coaching had made to me was, you know, hey, I think he really got to consider it our sport right now, it's uh, you know, it's it's it's so unregulated.

00:18:43
Speaker 6: It's such a mess.

00:18:44
Speaker 8: Uh, you know that, you know, I would have considered this more now than I did back when college basketball, you know, was you know, more regulated. So but I you know, coaches been there for me on lots of different things, you know, And I've studied coach for a long time, Like I have all the great coaches, you know, I studied, you know, their films as a high school coach, trying to learn you know, favorite practice drills of Tom Izzo, anything on motivation and leadership, culture building.

00:19:12
Speaker 6: And I've studied all the great coaches and taken advice from all the great ones.

00:19:17
Speaker 2: Can you see yourself coaching at his age?

00:19:22
Speaker 8: I can't see myself coaching at his age. But I also can't see myself not coaching, you know, like when you're part of teams and this is so much for a part of your identity. I always say to myself, I can't believe these guys are coaching in their seventies. Yeah yeah, but then you know, then you find yourself coaching in your seventies.

00:19:41
Speaker 2: Like Patino, I mean, he's a life.

00:19:45
Speaker 8: I mean, these guys are It's incredible to me, you know, like it really is the energy level how they you know, the thing about college you know, college coaching, college basketball is like that. You know, the head coach drives the organization. I mean they derive drive at drive it and are pushing everyone around them to the max. And you know, obviously you know what the amount of years those guys put in and what they achieved and to still be pushing that hard in their seventies incredible.

00:20:13
Speaker 2: Can you be out coached?

00:20:16
Speaker 8: I think that's a little bit of h whoever won the game out coached the other guy. Thing, you know, I think I think it's more about matchups, especially this time of the year. Yeah, you've got great coaches coaching all sixteen of these teams. Yeah, it all comes down. So I think matchups, who's playing their best at this time of year, halftime adjustments and all that stuff.

00:20:37
Speaker 6: I think it's way way overrated.

00:20:39
Speaker 2: Talking to Dan Hurley, the Connecticut basketball coach, they got Michigan State tomorrow night. Saint John's getting a five seed after winning the Big East is blank.

00:20:51
Speaker 8: Crap, you know, I mean, I mean, you know, crap, and then having the the you know, the two these teams.

00:21:01
Speaker 6: Uh, you know, in the same region. You know, it's probably the same.

00:21:04
Speaker 2: Do you think that they were hoping that there would be a rematch? I mean committee, Yeah.

00:21:12
Speaker 8: I mean I think that they're definitely the Committee either got a weird sense of humor or they do a great job of trying to give the people what they want.

00:21:24
Speaker 6: And I think no matter how this.

00:21:26
Speaker 8: Week ends up in uh, you know, in DC, you're going to get an a lead eight game. That's going to be you know, it's going to be incredible when you've got you know, Duke, you know, Rick Patino and Saint John's, Yukon and Michigan State.

00:21:38
Speaker 2: I had somebody ask me this and I didn't know if they were joking, and I realized they weren't. They said, can Yukon be a Cinderella story as a two seed? I go, no, Well, I'll ask you, are you a Cinderella story this year?

00:21:54
Speaker 7: No?

00:21:54
Speaker 6: I don't think so.

00:21:55
Speaker 8: I think we've been uh, you know, consistently, you know, consistently great though whole year. You know, we haven't always Yeah, we haven't performed in the championship moments. So it'll be interesting to see how we respond this week. But you know, we played or we had as good a non conference wins as anyone in the country, and then we went nineteen and three in the Big East, so you know, and then yeah, we won our first too, you know, first two tournament games by double figure points. So I do think we're you know, we're kind of coming in, you know, a lot quieter than we did in twenty three and twenty four, and that's probably serves us pretty well.

00:22:32
Speaker 2: I'm curious about the future of the mid major here, Dan, because I don't know if these last two years are an aberration or is that the future of the blue bloods are are going to take over and mid majors are not going to be what they used to be.

00:22:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, well, I definitely think that.

00:22:54
Speaker 8: You know, I think it's gonna get tougher for mid majors because I think more high majors are going to spend more money in this offseason, so I think it's going to get even tougher. I think to make the ns A tournament, and then I think it's going to be tougher for the mid majors. But then I also on the flip side, I think you're going to see even more international players coming into college basketball. I just think the inventory is going to grow as it makes more sense for international players that can make more money in college in America, and then that I think is just going to create more inventory of talent that the mid major you know, ends up with better players and they could maybe you know, win more of these early conference games.

00:23:38
Speaker 2: But I wonder, though, if you would rather get a transfer who has proven or you got a high school kid.

00:23:48
Speaker 6: I mean, in the perfect world, I'd rather have the high school kid. And I think the way that we try to do it is.

00:23:55
Speaker 8: A majority of our team we want as homegrown boys that we developed a relatelationship with. We have a culture, we got a real connection, you got a real fabric of a team and uh and that's supplement with with what you need in the portal or or at least you know, in most cases have multiple years with the transfer, so it doesn't feel so transactional and it doesn't feel like you're just putting together a mercenary squad.

00:24:18
Speaker 2: What's the most money somebody has asked you for.

00:24:24
Speaker 6: Four and a half million?

00:24:26
Speaker 2: I think, how does that conversation go?

00:24:31
Speaker 8: It doesn't actually go on with me because I I'll meet with the agents to talk about the vision for the player, you know, on the official visit with the with the transfer or the high school player. They could sit in on you know, how we plan to develop the player, how do we use them in the system or whatever. But once we get to uh, you know, any type of negotiating, that just goes to the GM Tom Moore and then uh, he just kind of walks in and out of the boardroom telling me where where the negotiations going, and then you know, yeah, I try to stay out of that. I don't, you know, the negotiations get personal.

00:25:10
Speaker 2: How would you do coaching the Yukon women's team and how would Gino do well coaching the men's team?

00:25:17
Speaker 8: Well, I think Yo Gino would obviously do better coaching the men's team to coaching the women because, you know, you know, because Gino's maybe you know, the best coach of all time. So I would be I don't I would be more relaxed, obviously, I wouldn't be.

00:25:34
Speaker 6: I would enjoy I don't know.

00:25:36
Speaker 8: They've won twenty seven or twelve thirty games this year by twenty five points or more. I don't know how I would handle that. I don't know what type of stress I would create? And uh, you know, what type of tension could I create there? It would probably make me crazy. I would long for a brutal loss at some point.

00:25:54
Speaker 2: You would you would probably consult your wife a lot more.

00:26:00
Speaker 6: I would, Uh, yeah, she she would.

00:26:04
Speaker 8: Yeah, she'd have a lot to say too, and she'd be constantly monitoring me.

00:26:09
Speaker 2: You you would have to find somebody to yell at, and it'd be hard to find somebody to yell at on the women's team.

00:26:16
Speaker 8: It would be and you know, and I don't know, I I or the officials are mostly female or I mean, it's it was that half and half, you know, I just it'd be an adjustment week, different world.

00:26:30
Speaker 2: Will you watch the games tonight?

00:26:33
Speaker 8: Yeah, you know, we'll keep these guys up and do video. It's it's you know, the game's gonna start for us close to nine, you know, so we but but last week we played it at I think we started our first round game at ten thirty Eastern times, so our body clock is used to playing late at night. But yeah, I mean only in years that I get eliminated early, do I not watch? I? Uh, you know, I refuse I I uh I boycott the ornament in years where we're not in contention.

00:27:03
Speaker 2: Yeah, I understand that. You know, why why put yourself through the agony of watching somebody and you go, we're better than them.

00:27:11
Speaker 6: Yeah.

00:27:12
Speaker 8: And it's like, you know, when you're a little kid or something, and if you didn't get invited to a birthday party or a pool party or something in your neighborhood, and then what are you going to do? Go up to the fence and listen to the kids splash around in the water. No one's doing that.

00:27:27
Speaker 2: Is there something you're you want to tell me that you didn't get invited to the pool parties in the neighborhood. Did anybody have a pool in Jersey City?

00:27:35
Speaker 6: There was one.

00:27:36
Speaker 8: There was one up at the top of the block, right down a couple of houses down from Darren Sabno buddy of ours coaches at UCLA, And there was literally one pool in this like probably two block radius. And on the way to the park where my where my dad and mom would put us through the drills, me and my brother, the jump rope, the ball handling drills, the shooting drills.

00:27:59
Speaker 6: In the heat this summer, we had to kind of.

00:28:01
Speaker 8: Dribble past that pool while they were splashing around barbecuing listening to music in like June, July, August.

00:28:09
Speaker 6: So no scars.

00:28:11
Speaker 2: Yeah, but how many titles did those people win?

00:28:15
Speaker 6: I mean, I don't think. I don't think they Yeah, sports wasn't their deal?

00:28:23
Speaker 2: Was your mom putting you through drills with your dad?

00:28:27
Speaker 8: Yeah, because during the week my dad, you know, he was a probation officer, you know, so during the summer, my dad didn't teach it Saint Anthony, so he didn't get the summers off. So you know, either me and Bob would write up the plan for today or my dad would have the workout writ Now do you be brown box drills?

00:28:44
Speaker 6: The agility warm up.

00:28:45
Speaker 8: I mean we would make chalk, you know, exes on the on the court so we could do our agility work. My mom would have a whistle and she would put us through the paces as the neighbor as people would be looking out at us in astonishment. Neighbors.

00:29:03
Speaker 2: So your dad probation officer, I'm gonna guess, pretty tough to get away with stuff in in your teens.

00:29:10
Speaker 6: Yes, scare, I mean, yeah, you knew.

00:29:12
Speaker 8: I mean he uh, just growing up in Jersey City, you know the things that he did, uh, just as a kid that was raised in the street and uh as an outside dog, not an indoor dog, and uh I mean he uh you know, and then being the probation officer kind of driving around with him when he would go on house calls trying to find uh, you know, I guess his clients that had not come in to take uh, you know, the the urine test or what have you? Just seeing grown men scramble as the Dodge caravan was driving down Martin Luther King Drive. You know, you you you know, you can't get away with stuff.

00:29:49
Speaker 2: But I wonder that had you been, you know, raised in the suburbs as opposed to where you're raised, would you be how different would you be or would you be different as a person, as a coach player.

00:30:06
Speaker 6: I would be a lot different.

00:30:07
Speaker 8: I think the you know, the advantage of growing up you know where we grew up, growing up in the city, growing up in North Jersey, Jersey City.

00:30:15
Speaker 7: Uh.

00:30:16
Speaker 8: You know, I just think you've got a real versatile, relatable.

00:30:20
Speaker 6: Way about you. Uh.

00:30:22
Speaker 8: You know, you feel like you could, you know, communicate with a with a very diverse group of people from all different types of backgrounds. I mean, Jersey City, I think, next to Queens is the most diverse city in America. So, uh, you know it's you develop, you know, a connection to all people. You're comfortable out on the street corner, but you're also you develop a comfortability uh in the boardroom.

00:30:48
Speaker 2: Great to talk to you. Do you have big plans for today?

00:30:53
Speaker 6: Just the final prep.

00:30:55
Speaker 8: I mean, this is actually a good time of year, Dan, because the practices are short, the hay is in the barn and h and you feel a lot less pressure this year. You feel like, get to this weekend. You're back in contention. You're you know, you're playing one of the best teams in the country in Michigan State. Uh, you knows. Uh, it feels like a lot of pressure is off. Let's let's let it go rip.

00:31:14
Speaker 2: Did you just come on because you were bored today?

00:31:17
Speaker 6: Yeah?

00:31:18
Speaker 7: I do.

00:31:18
Speaker 8: I need time filling just brain right now needs distraction.

00:31:24
Speaker 2: Oh well, hopefully I provided one for you. Thanks. Great to talk to you, Good luck tomorrow night. Appreciate you Dad, Dan Hurley or Danny Hurley, depending on how old he is. Jersey City, Jersey City now is a whole lot different than Jersey City back when he grew up, because I remember I wasn't going into Jersey City. I remember when I was in New York in the early eighties, people talked about Jersey City and it usually wasn't something good. Uh, let's take a break here, Last call for phone calls? What we Learn? Catch all of our shows at Foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio app. Search FSR to listen live. Last call for phone Calls? What we Learn? What's in store Tomorrow? Final results of the poll question. I'm looking at the World Series odds. Would you be interested in the difference between the Dodgers and the second place team? Yes, you would the Dodgers to win the World Series plus two thirty, the Yankees plus one thousand. Then it's the Mariners, Mets, Blue Jays, Red Sox, and the Phillies. Those are the latest odds according to DraftKings. But the Dodgers, who will make their season debut coming up tonight against the Diamondbacks. You can watch that game on Peacock and NBC, which is where you can find our program on Peacock. All right, let me see this day in sports history. You know we were thinking about this with Dan Hurley and Gino Oriema. Those are the two biggest personalities I think in college basketball. If you look what Gino's done with the women's team and then Dan Hurley with the men's team. Now there's other you know, Rick Patino's of personality, John kevil Perry's of personality, but I don't think they're on the level of personality like winning in personality together. You know, that's Dan Hurley. And now you can say he's polarizing. Uh you know, he can be petulant. But you know even when he said if I coach the women's team, I don't you know, there'd be no tension, very little stress. I'd have to find that. You know, you're almost you almost need that. I think he needs that environment, and I think he might lose his uh Luke Murray, Bill murray son, who's an assistant coach who buy a lot of different people who know college basketball. Bill Murray's son is a very very bright basketball mind, and it looks like he is in line for the Boston College. John all right, PAULI this Dane sports history.

00:34:16
Speaker 9: Yeah, don't have that many. One thing about the Dodgers. They won ninety three last year. They didn't win one hundred and five and they only got past the Padres by three games. Brewers had more wins, Phillies had more wins. Not there are no teams that won one hundred games last year.

00:34:33
Speaker 2: And keep in mind how close that World Series was with the Blue Jays. They you know, six inches five inches, you know they score. But you know, it's hard to really make a case to go against somebody other than the Dodgers. You know, we do this. We used to do this with Tiger at a major. Hey, Tiger of the field, if I gave you the Dodgers of the field, to me, that's different. I would take the field against the Dodgers. Just because things happen along the way. If somebody gets hurt, or somebody all of a sudden finds a couple of really good players who become great players. You know, there's magic that happens. You know, the Diamondbacks going to the World Series a couple of years ago, like who would have thought. You know, we've seen the Rangers come out of nowhere, Giants come out of nowhere, are the Cardinals? Can you check the over under for wins for the Saint Louis Cardinals? Is it at seventy? I have a friend who lives in Saint Louis, and he said, you know, are we going to be an all time bad team? I go, You're the Cardinals? Is the over under seventy wins? This seventy and a half?

00:35:46
Speaker 9: Paulie, I saw seventy one and a half from a couple of weeks ago. But the Cardinals were seventy eight and eighty four last year, nineteen games out of first. Dang, that is rare.

00:35:56
Speaker 10: Yes, Mark, Yes, one of our backroom guys just better on them. The over under is sixty nine and a half.

00:36:02
Speaker 2: Way Dang gambling podcasts coming up after this show at Dan patrick dot com. The Toddcast latest edition is up there as well. All right, Paul, this Dane sports history.

00:36:12
Speaker 9: This is one of my favorites. Dan nineteen thirty one, Boston Bruins coach Art Ross became the first NHL coach to pull the goalie for an extra attacker. The Bruins did lose that game in the Stanley Cup semis, but it was in the Stanley Cup. Can you imagine him waving to the goalkeeper, Hey.

00:36:26
Speaker 2: Come here, No, what are you talking about? I can't come here first time? Yeah. Nineteen seventy nine, Magic over Larry Bird. Nineteen seventy three, Bill Walton went twenty one of twenty two and he was the most out standing player. UCLA their seventh straight title, but they only won by five over Memphis. I think Bill, if you check that box score, so he missed one. He missed one field goal and that might have been offensive goaltending on Bill. And I think he missed more shots from the free throw line. I think he might have been two for five for the free throw line. But one of the most incredible championship game performances was Bill Walton in nineteen seventy three. Findal results of the poll question Seaton NFL season opener on a Wednesday night. People either really don't care or absolutely hate it. Very few people love it.

00:37:20
Speaker 3: Best places to watch baseball are called park fields or stadium park. Running away with that one, and then which clip of the five cost us the Emmy nomination? Dan Derek and Sandler, Bo Jackson and Colon cancer, the Paul miss Chop, Jordan load management or the Matt Friends Impression. Matt Friends Impressions have a slight lead over the Pauli miss Chop, followed by the Jordan Load Management take.

00:37:44
Speaker 2: Yeah.

00:37:46
Speaker 3: Well, not many people voting for bo Jackson talking about colon cancer, which is great.

00:37:49
Speaker 2: Yeah, you can't say that was a negative segment.

00:37:52
Speaker 3: It's got too many votes actually, but not not too many that it's depressing.

00:37:57
Speaker 2: All right, Let's get a couple of phone calls here, justin in Utah, Hi, Justin, what's on your mind?

00:38:04
Speaker 6: Hey?

00:38:04
Speaker 7: Dan, thanks for taking my call, five eleven, two fifty. And I just have a hypothetical and I figure you guys are the perfect people to ask because it goes right in line or what I think we all wonder about bald people. Just hypothetically, if you had a bald coworker and suddenly they came back to work one day wearing a two pay never addressed it, but you look around you and your other coworkers. How would you guys handle this situation? Would you ask them about it? Wait till they bring it up? No, I'll hang up and listen. But I'm curious what you guys would do.

00:38:42
Speaker 2: Is this something that happened to you? Justin it very.

00:38:47
Speaker 7: Well, as Polly likes to say it very well, may.

00:38:49
Speaker 3: Be empathetical, okay, yeah see, And just for clarity, hypothetically, which side of this would you be on, justin, the guy wearing the two pay or the coworker who doesn't know how to handle it?

00:39:02
Speaker 4: No, No, I am very fortunate.

00:39:04
Speaker 7: I have a good head of hair. Not as good as dance, of course, but you know we all can't be perfect, So thank you justin, Yes, Tom.

00:39:12
Speaker 12: Where we work, among the twelve of us, someone will just say immediately nice to pay.

00:39:16
Speaker 2: What's going on with that then? But if you're in a real office setting, you're probably not saying anything.

00:39:22
Speaker 6: Now.

00:39:23
Speaker 2: I've been around guys who have come in and their hair is considerably darker mc lovin that one day, I remember Mike Florio is texting me, He goes, are you guys going to make fun of McLevin with his new hair color? And I didn't want to. I thought it was funnier by not bringing it up to McLevin that he knew, we knew, but we just kind of left it there. Yes, tot.

00:39:48
Speaker 12: And if you're already self conscious about something where you're darkening your hair or pretending you have hair. Whatever you're doing, you don't need someone to add to that and make a comment to just let it go.

00:39:56
Speaker 2: Let them bring it up if they want or ignore it.

00:39:58
Speaker 9: Yes, Paul, but I think the two pay e the person who's putting on the two pay has to break the ice for the building. Hey, guys, let's get.

00:40:05
Speaker 6: It out of the way.

00:40:06
Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, Seaton, Yeah, that's how I feel like I'm much more of a Let me just address the elephant in the room here. Like I came in with a crappy haircut the other day and was like, before you guys said anything, I was like, hey, look at what I did to my hair. I really messed it up. Now it's just out in the open. Nobody feels awkward, especially me.

00:40:22
Speaker 6: You know.

00:40:22
Speaker 3: So if I was thinking about going to get a two pay or something, probably like two weeks before being like, you know, I think I'm getting a little something up top.

00:40:28
Speaker 2: Yeah, and we can't make fun of your haircut now because you've already made fun of your haircut, correct, Yeah, it was a preemptive strike there. Let's go around the room see if we learned anything. On today's not Even Award nominated program, Todd.

00:40:42
Speaker 12: Chase Daniel says Ty Simpson's a more natural thrower, meaning his motion and mechanics for Nando Mendoza is more robotic.

00:40:49
Speaker 2: Setan, did you learn anything today?

00:40:50
Speaker 3: I learned that ties for broadcasters are becoming irrelevant.

00:40:53
Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I've got all these ties. I'd be more than willing to give them out, Marvin, how about you.

00:40:59
Speaker 6: Will Wade?

00:41:00
Speaker 2: Going back to LSU, Paul.

00:41:03
Speaker 9: Announced your to Pey.

00:41:06
Speaker 2: In fact, I've got when I handed out Super Bowl trophy, I have pictures over here with the ties. I actually draped the ties over those pictures. Todd, what did I learn today?

00:41:15
Speaker 12: We all learned if you had one more round of golf, you'd picked Tiger or Jack Nicholas at Pebble beetro Cypress.

00:41:19
Speaker 2: Thanks for joining us. Our pleasure to serve you. We'll talk to you tomorrow
