Vanity metrics. Oh, honestly, that name and that word even makes me cringe. And in case you're wondering, what are vanity metrics? Well, they're just basically the metrics that don't matter. They're the numbers that look shiny on the outside, which would be, say, like, follower count, likes, or views, but they don't actually tell the whole story.
Are you tired of showing up online, posting your heart out, and still hearing crickets? Are you doing all the right things, but wondering why your content isn't converting? Your DMs are dry, and your audience isn't buying? You're not alone, and this podcast is exactly for you.
Welcome to Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses, where strategy meets soul and connection. Well, that's the secret sauce. Hi, I'm Cheyanne Cleyman, a wife, proud mama of three, former actress and fitness trainer turned serial entrepreneur and online relationship expert.
Over the last decade, I've built my own brands, helped dozens of others grow theirs, and discovered one powerful truth: connection is the real currency. If you're a service-based business or high-ticket brand that wants more leads, trust, and sales from social media without the burnout or fake hype, you're in the right place.
Each week, I'm bringing you short, powerful, and packed episodes that feel like a coffee date with a best friend and biz coach all in one. Let's turn your followers into clients and content into connection. This is Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses, and it's about to change how you show up online. Let's dive in, boss.
Hey, hey, hey, bosses, welcome back to Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses. I am so, so glad you're here today because today is one of those episodes that are basically like a game-changer conversation. Why is that? Well, we're digging into something that can literally make or break your business, make or break your lead generation for your business, which is the little M word: metrics.
Here's the thing, if you're measuring the wrong things, you're making decisions based on the wrong data, so that can steer your business completely off of track. But the good news is, when you focus on the right metrics, that's the magic. That's when you're going to start to see clarity, momentum, and growth that actually lead you to where you want to go, right? It's going to be momentum that lasts.
So let's stop talking about it, and let's start diving into the nitty-gritty. Let's uncover what numbers really matter for your business and how to track them in a way that helps you generate real results. All right, guys, here we go. So let's start with the most common mistake I see across the board, no matter what your niche is: vanity metrics. Oh, honestly, that name and that word even makes me cringe.
And in case you're wondering, what is vanity metrics? Well, they're just basically the metrics that don't matter. They're the numbers that look shiny on the outside, which would be, say, like, follower count, likes, or views, but they don't actually tell the whole story. Don't get me wrong, they feel really good in the moment. I mean, who doesn't love seeing a post, especially one you worked on for hours, blow up, right?
But here's the truth: those numbers alone don't pay your bills. For example, you might have 10,000 followers, but if none of them are actually engaging back with you on your content, say asking questions or actually clicking through to your cart and buying, then it's really just a big empty number. It's like, if you're a visual person, it's like having a stadium full of people who came to watch the game, but no one bought a ticket. Nobody wants to do that.
If you're new to my podcast, one huge, huge thing that I make sure that you walk away with are action steps. Because this podcast is not just full of empty air, it is full of things that you can start applying to your business, to your marketing strategy, today. So the first action step that I want you to go ahead and write down, or if you're old school, go ahead and, like, write with a pen and paper or open up the notes section on your phone, is I want you to pick one post on your feed, one, say that you spent a lot of time on, or one that's, like, really, maybe emotionally significant to you from the past month.
Now, go past the like count and look for the real interactions. Those are the people leaving comments, the people that maybe are showing genuine interest. Are they DMing you to learn more? Are they asking questions? Those are clues, and crucial clues, even if it's just one person, because they're going to tell you whether your content is sparking curiosity that could ultimately turn into conversation. And that's where the magic is, because the right conversations with the right people will eventually lead you to clients. So that we've talked about the infamous V word, the vanity metric.
If they're not the thing that's throwing you off, or if they're not the thing that you should be looking at, what should you be looking at instead? I'm gonna give you three of my favorite, and not just my favorite, but honestly, what science and just stats back up are the most important metrics to look at that are gonna give you a true pulse on your business and what's working in your marketing efforts, okay?
So first and foremost is your lead conversion rate. So out of all the leads you're generating, how many actually become paying clients, right? That's the ultimate measure of effectiveness. Now, you can measure your leads, perhaps based on your email list or how many downloads you've made a month. And so when you look at the ones that are really in your funnel, look at how many people have gone to becoming actual paying clients.
Your second metric you really want to look at is your engagement rate. So especially since clearly you care a little bit about social media or helping you, helping it work for you, at least, you know the significance of what social media means for your business nowadays, because you clicked on this episode, right? So if you're going to look at any social media metric, this is the one you really want to look at, which is engagement rate.
So it's not likes, but it's comments, shares, saves. Those deeper interactions tell you if people care enough to take the next step to ultimately get in your funnel and start to gain that trust with you to ultimately lead them to purchase. Now, the last one I'm going to leave you with before your next action step is your click-through rate. Now, this often you'll see on social media metrics called your CTR. If you're posting links to your website, freebies, or landing pages, how many people are actually clicking? That's a strong signal of interest.
Now, these may not give you the instant dopamine hit that, say, like 1,000 likes on a reel or views would, but they're the ones that are actually going to tell you if your marketing is working, and essentially, that's the most important when it comes to making social media work for your business.

All right, here we go. We are just six minutes in, and we're already to your second action step. Here we go for next week. So your first action step was about last week, this week, it's for the week coming up. So you want to track three things, okay?
First thing is, write this down: how many leads came directly from your social media? Right? Want to make sure tracking the metrics is your social media actually working for you. Number two: how many of those leads became clients? Okay? And if the numbers are zero, that's okay. That's why you're here on this podcast, and I hope that you're going to continue to come in and join me every week or binge past episodes so that we can start adding these numbers in the positive for you.
And number three: what were the click-through rates on the links you shared? A lot of social media, especially Facebook or Google, like, using a pixel, will show your click-through rates. Now, by the end of the week, you're going to have a much clearer picture of where the breakdown is. Is it in getting leads in the door, or is it converting them once they show interest?
Think about your business as a brick and mortar. Some people are really great at window advertisements, right? We've all been to those stores that they have the most beautiful window, like, displays, or they've got something really cool on the outside, and then you walk in and you're kind of deflated, or you're kind of disappointed. It was not what you were expecting. We've also been in the opposite where you go to a store and not much fancy on the outside, maybe one of your friends pulled you in, and then you go in and you're the one who spent the most money because it resonated with you.
So you want to apply this to your business to see where is your business landing and ultimately, where are your clients either joining you or leaving you. Now, here's the part most often skip. People skip tracking. It's not just about the numbers, it's about understanding relationships. If you've been listening to my podcast for any amount of time, you'll know that I basically joke that I'm a relationship expert, because a lot of people who come to me for advice when it comes to business partnerships, they have even said, like, "Cheyenne, you sound like you're a relationship guru or expert or what have you," and that's because so many of the same principles can apply.
If you look at your clients as potential people, say you'd want to date, I think a lot of the things that you would do when you would be trying to, say, woo a man or woman, like, into a relationship, you can do the same thing. The same principles apply, because leads or your people, your the clients, ideal people that you want to become clients, they're not just numbers on a spreadsheet, right? They are real, live people, and people don't always move from point A to point B in a straight line, right? I mean, or am I just talking about my trip to where I'm at now? Like, I feel like, if I look in the past, I've lived about nine lives by now. So no, I was all the way to Z, I think, before I got to B.
So the real progress is measured in how you're nurturing those relationships. Ask yourself the tough questions: are you giving them value? Are you building trust, and are you staying consistent over time, while you're chewing on those answers to those questions?
Here's your next action step: take a look at your current follow-up system. Where are the holes? Are you staying in touch with leads after the first interaction? Are you checking in, sharing helpful resources, or inviting them into the next step? Or are you like a lot of business owners out there right now? Are you letting them slip through the cracks because you just don't have a process to track and nurture them?
I get it, I know, however overwhelming it can be, because marketing is just one aspect of your business, and let's be honest, if you could pass that over to someone else, you probably would. I promise you, if you put as much effort into nurturing as you do into attracting your ideal clients, you're going to see your conversions go way up. So here we go. Let's land this plane.
Metrics don't have to be overwhelming or confusing, but they do have to be meaningful. They need to mean something. The more that you get to know your metrics, I think the more you're going to love them, even if you're not a numbers person. You want to stop chasing the numbers that'll just look good and start focusing on the ones that grow your business, so that you make sure you don't just have a hobby, that you have a business.
