Bloomberg Audio Studios, Podcasts, Radio News. 0:00:09.680 --> 0:00:11.520 Good morning, I'm Nathan Hager. 0:00:11.400 --> 0:00:14.600 And I'm Karen Moscow. Here are the stories we're following today. 0:00:14.840 --> 0:00:18.120 Karen, we begin with the Fed's final policy decision of 0:00:18.160 --> 0:00:21.000 the year. Economists expect the Central Bank to lower borrowing 0:00:21.040 --> 0:00:24.280 costs for a third straight meeting, while signaling fewer interst 0:00:24.320 --> 0:00:27.520 rate cuts next year. We get a preview from Bloomberg's 0:00:27.560 --> 0:00:28.320 Michael McKee. 0:00:28.520 --> 0:00:30.840 Fed officials are in a way between a rock and 0:00:30.840 --> 0:00:34.120 a hard place. The economy is slowing, but inflation has 0:00:34.120 --> 0:00:38.400 gotten stuck above their two percent target. Interest rates for mortgages, cars, 0:00:38.440 --> 0:00:42.040 and credit cards remain tight, but financial conditions are easy 0:00:42.080 --> 0:00:45.080 and stock markets are setting all time highs. Before their 0:00:45.120 --> 0:00:48.479 blackout period, most central bankers were signaling they would support 0:00:48.479 --> 0:00:51.520 a rate cut today, although several said they do see 0:00:51.560 --> 0:00:54.840 reasons to pause. That puts the emphasis on their new 0:00:54.880 --> 0:00:58.560 economic forecasts and dot plot. When do they cut again 0:00:58.880 --> 0:01:02.480 and how many times? In twenty twenty five? Michael McKee 0:01:02.520 --> 0:01:03.240 Bloomberg Radio. 0:01:03.280 --> 0:01:05.440 All right, Mike, thanks and stick with Bloomberg for full 0:01:05.480 --> 0:01:09.000 FED coverage with a special edition of Bloomberg's Surveillance the Fed. 0:01:09.080 --> 0:01:12.479 The sides with Tom Keene, Jonathan Farrell, and Lisa A. Bromwitz. 0:01:12.680 --> 0:01:16.280 That's today one thirty pm, Ball Street Time on Bloomberg Radio, 0:01:16.280 --> 0:01:20.200 Bloomberg Television, and the Bloomberg Podcasts page on YouTube. 0:01:20.440 --> 0:01:23.680 Well Nathan, Bank of America CEO Brian moynihan expects the 0:01:23.720 --> 0:01:25.920 Fed to cut rates. He spoke about the future of 0:01:25.959 --> 0:01:28.679 monetary policy with Bloomberg's David Weston. 0:01:28.959 --> 0:01:30.440 If the economist view is you have to have a 0:01:30.480 --> 0:01:33.720 real rate structure across the curve of seventy five basis 0:01:33.720 --> 0:01:36.399 points one hundred basis points. If you're four seventy five 0:01:36.440 --> 0:01:39.520 four fifty now in the flation rates three point three, 0:01:39.520 --> 0:01:40.880 that's bigger. So you got to start to bring it 0:01:40.920 --> 0:01:43.800 in normalized. We've got to get to know positive soap 0:01:43.800 --> 0:01:45.600 and curve a curve that has real rates across it. 0:01:45.959 --> 0:01:48.760 An invert a curve means something anticipatory is going to. 0:01:48.680 --> 0:01:49.360 Go the other way. 0:01:49.680 --> 0:01:51.200 All that's got to happen. So I think they need 0:01:51.200 --> 0:01:52.400 to bring it down a little bit. They just have 0:01:52.480 --> 0:01:55.120 to be more careful because the economy is stronger than 0:01:55.160 --> 0:01:56.960 we thought three months ago, six months ago, but it 0:01:57.000 --> 0:01:58.680 still has potential weaknesses. 0:01:59.080 --> 0:02:02.080 Bank of America O Brian Monahan sees the FED lowering 0:02:02.120 --> 0:02:04.800 interest rates to the three point seventy five percent level, 0:02:04.920 --> 0:02:07.920 or three more cuts from where they are currently. Get 0:02:07.920 --> 0:02:12.079 the full conversation on the Bloomberg Talks podcast feed on Apple, Spotify, 0:02:12.200 --> 0:02:14.800 or anywhere else you download podcasts. 0:02:14.320 --> 0:02:14.720 Well, Karen. 0:02:14.760 --> 0:02:17.280 In the UK, inflation rows to an eighth month high 0:02:17.480 --> 0:02:21.239 in November. The consumer prices index increase two point six percent, 0:02:21.320 --> 0:02:24.240 drifting further above the Bank of England's two percent target. 0:02:24.440 --> 0:02:27.200 Economists say the latest report effectively ends any hope of 0:02:27.240 --> 0:02:30.120 an interest rate cut at the boees final meeting of 0:02:30.160 --> 0:02:30.480 the year. 0:02:31.360 --> 0:02:33.360 On the stock story of the Day, Nathan comes out 0:02:33.400 --> 0:02:37.600 of the auto industry, shares of Nissans soaring on merger talks, 0:02:37.639 --> 0:02:40.440 We get the very latest at Bloomberg's Lisa Matteo Lisa, 0:02:40.440 --> 0:02:41.160 good morning. 0:02:41.080 --> 0:02:43.760 Good morning, Karen. You have that merger reportedly between Nissan 0:02:43.840 --> 0:02:46.400 and Honda. Now you have Nissan shares up about twenty 0:02:46.440 --> 0:02:50.520 three percent in Japan, Honda down three percent. Sources telling 0:02:50.520 --> 0:02:54.079 Bloomberg the deal could be expanded to include Mitsubishi Motors, 0:02:54.120 --> 0:02:57.600 which already has capital ties with Nissan, and what's more, 0:02:57.720 --> 0:03:00.359 sources a Fox con the Taiwan based per user for 0:03:00.440 --> 0:03:03.960 iPhones approached Nissan about taking a stake. Now, the nie 0:03:04.040 --> 0:03:07.120 Ke is reporting that that move while it helped accelerate 0:03:07.240 --> 0:03:10.000 merger efforts out of fears that the Japanese company could 0:03:10.080 --> 0:03:12.920 be vulnerable to take over by the Taiwanese firm. But 0:03:13.000 --> 0:03:15.280 here's the thing. If that deal were to go through, 0:03:15.360 --> 0:03:18.560 it would create the world's third largest automaker, putting the 0:03:18.560 --> 0:03:21.239 pressure on rival Toyota, as well as provide Honda and 0:03:21.320 --> 0:03:25.680 Nissan with more resources to compete with larger peers, especially 0:03:26.120 --> 0:03:30.240 ev rivals like Tesla and Chinese automakers. And something else 0:03:30.280 --> 0:03:32.760 to keep in mind. French automaker Renault, well, it could 0:03:32.800 --> 0:03:35.000 also have a say in the deal, considering it owns 0:03:35.040 --> 0:03:38.800 about thirty six percent of Nissan. Lisa Matteo, Bloomberg Radio. 0:03:39.000 --> 0:03:41.360 All right, Lisa, thank you now to the latest development 0:03:41.400 --> 0:03:44.280 in the killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The 0:03:44.320 --> 0:03:48.360 suspect Luigi Mangioni is now facing multiple murder charges in 0:03:48.440 --> 0:03:51.800 New York. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg laid out the counts. 0:03:52.120 --> 0:03:55.280 They include one count of murder in the first degree 0:03:55.720 --> 0:03:59.760 as a killing and furthers of terrorism two counts of 0:04:00.080 --> 0:04:03.520 during the second degree. One charge of the killing was 0:04:03.560 --> 0:04:07.640 done as an act of terrorism, and the second pertain 0:04:07.680 --> 0:04:09.600 to the fact that the killing was intentional. 0:04:09.720 --> 0:04:12.120 Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg was joined at the news conference 0:04:12.160 --> 0:04:14.960 by New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tish. She had 0:04:14.960 --> 0:04:17.240 a message for those who have celebrated the crime. 0:04:17.560 --> 0:04:21.520 There is no heroism in what Mangioni did. This was 0:04:21.600 --> 0:04:25.200 a senseless act of violence. It was a cold and 0:04:25.279 --> 0:04:29.520 calculated crime that stole a life and put New Yorkers 0:04:29.560 --> 0:04:30.080 at risk. 0:04:30.320 --> 0:04:33.160 Missioner Jessica Tish and Alvin Bragg spoke ahead of two 0:04:33.240 --> 0:04:37.000 scheduled hearings tomorrow from Mangioni in Blair County, Pennsylvania. Bragg 0:04:37.000 --> 0:04:40.400 says Mangoni could give up his fight against extradition that 0:04:40.440 --> 0:04:42.440 could bring him back to New York to face these 0:04:42.480 --> 0:04:44.279 new charges by the end of the week. 0:04:44.760 --> 0:04:47.440 Now, Nathan, let's get the latest on efforts to avoid 0:04:47.440 --> 0:04:50.480 a government shutdown. Lawmakers on Capitol Hill have released a 0:04:50.520 --> 0:04:53.520 stop gap spending measure, but it could be a preview of. 0:04:53.480 --> 0:04:54.159 Fights to come. 0:04:54.200 --> 0:04:56.200 We get more with the Bloombergy's Gina Cervetti. 0:04:56.720 --> 0:04:59.560 The bill would extend current funding into mid March. It 0:04:59.600 --> 0:05:02.800 includes more than one hundred billion dollars in emergency relief 0:05:02.839 --> 0:05:06.640 for hurricane victims, the Maui wildfires, and the bridge collapse 0:05:06.680 --> 0:05:09.560 in Baltimore. But the fight to get those measures attached 0:05:09.600 --> 0:05:12.880 could point to even more challenges for President elect Trump's 0:05:12.880 --> 0:05:16.520 early priorities. Republicans will have just a one vote majority 0:05:16.560 --> 0:05:19.159 in the House through at least April. Since Trump picked 0:05:19.279 --> 0:05:23.160 three GOP lawmakers to serve in his administration, that'll be 0:05:23.279 --> 0:05:24.880 right in the middle of a push to pass a 0:05:24.920 --> 0:05:27.839 new budget along party lines, not to mention bills on 0:05:27.960 --> 0:05:33.479 border security, taxes and other budget issues. Gina Cervetti, Bloomberg Radio. 0:05:33.480 --> 0:05:35.920 Ni Gina, thank you and President Like Donald Trump has 0:05:36.000 --> 0:05:39.520 chosen football legend Herschel Walker to be US Ambassador to 0:05:39.560 --> 0:05:42.400 the Bahamas. Trump made the announcement in a post on 0:05:42.480 --> 0:05:45.560 Truth Social, his social media website. Walker most recently had 0:05:45.560 --> 0:05:48.520 an unsuccessful run for the US Senate in Georgia. To 0:05:48.560 --> 0:05:51.360 hold the ambassador position, he'll need his nomination approved next 0:05:51.400 --> 0:05:54.880 year by the Republican led Senate. Trump also announced he's 0:05:54.920 --> 0:06:02.880 nominating art collector Nicole McGraw to be US Ambassador to Croatia. 0:06:03.440 --> 0:06:04.600 Time now for a look at some of the other 0:06:04.680 --> 0:06:06.839 stories making news in New York and around the world, 0:06:06.839 --> 0:06:09.360 and for that we're joined by Bloomberg's John Tucker. John 0:06:09.360 --> 0:06:10.520 Good Morning, Good Morning. 0:06:10.560 --> 0:06:13.800 Karen, A Defense Department spokesman says none of the mysterious 0:06:13.920 --> 0:06:17.040 drones reported over the skies of the US Northeast are 0:06:17.040 --> 0:06:19.719 being flown by the Pentagon or are part of a 0:06:19.800 --> 0:06:23.600 secret government test. President Joe Biden also weighed in, saying 0:06:23.720 --> 0:06:27.640 there's nothing nefarious. Apparently there's a lot of drones authorized 0:06:28.279 --> 0:06:28.640 up there. 0:06:29.320 --> 0:06:31.800 I think you weren't started and they all guys, everybody's 0:06:31.839 --> 0:06:35.400 wanting to getting a deal, but all the lovers were following. 0:06:35.880 --> 0:06:39.359 Quote at the Pentagon, Major General pat Ryder told reporters 0:06:39.600 --> 0:06:42.919 top Department officials take seriously any cases of drones flying 0:06:42.960 --> 0:06:46.440 near or over US military, So it's that we added 0:06:46.440 --> 0:06:50.000 this was not a new concern. Boeing says it's resumed 0:06:50.040 --> 0:06:53.400 production across its range of aircraft programs at factories in 0:06:53.440 --> 0:06:56.680 the Pacific Northwest after they were shut down for weeks 0:06:56.720 --> 0:06:59.760 because of that lengthy worker strike. Following the resumption of 0:07:00.000 --> 0:07:03.240 output of its popular seven thirty seven model last week, 0:07:03.520 --> 0:07:07.160 Bois Navigan taking up building the largest seven sixty seven 0:07:07.440 --> 0:07:12.280 and Triple seven aircraft again. Twana Looney, grandmother in Alabama, 0:07:12.360 --> 0:07:15.080 is on the road to recovery after receiving a genetically 0:07:15.120 --> 0:07:19.040 modified pig kidney at NYU Langone Health. 0:07:19.400 --> 0:07:21.400 It's just like getting a second chance in life. 0:07:25.000 --> 0:07:27.480 Doctors hope this will be the first long term success 0:07:27.520 --> 0:07:30.040 case that could open the door for similar procedures for 0:07:30.240 --> 0:07:33.320 tens of thousands of Americans waiting on the donor list, 0:07:33.640 --> 0:07:36.440 and more delays for the SpaceX crew still stuck on 0:07:36.480 --> 0:07:40.160 the International Space Station months after their mission was set 0:07:40.200 --> 0:07:43.160 to end. A new SpaceX rocket was set to launch 0:07:43.200 --> 0:07:46.240 this coming February to finally bring them home, but now 0:07:46.320 --> 0:07:49.560 NASA is pushing back that mission until at least late March, 0:07:49.880 --> 0:07:53.320 citing the need for more preparation. Time Global News twenty 0:07:53.320 --> 0:07:55.720 four hours date whenever you wanted with Bloomberg News. Now, 0:07:55.920 --> 0:07:58.679 I'm John Tucker and this is Bloomberg Karen. 0:07:59.040 --> 0:08:05.840 All right, John, thank you some time now for the 0:08:05.880 --> 0:08:08.840 Bloomberg Sports Update, brought to you by Tri State. Howdy. 0:08:08.920 --> 0:08:11.680 Here's John Stashauer. John, Good morning, Good morning care. 0:08:11.800 --> 0:08:14.520 Juan Soto has never won an MVP award. The guy 0:08:14.560 --> 0:08:17.040 the Yankees just brought in to try and replace Soto 0:08:17.160 --> 0:08:20.800 as a left handed hitting outfielder has Cody Bellinger. As 0:08:20.840 --> 0:08:23.360 a twenty three year old in twenty nineteen with the Dodgers, 0:08:23.400 --> 0:08:25.720 he hit three hundred and forty seven home runs, but 0:08:25.720 --> 0:08:28.880 Bellinger has not been anywhere near that good since then, 0:08:29.240 --> 0:08:31.360 and he's nowhere near the player Soto is. But the 0:08:31.440 --> 0:08:34.760 Yanks will hope he can regain that MVP form acquired 0:08:34.800 --> 0:08:38.400 from the Cubs and a Cody for Cody Trageicago gets 0:08:38.400 --> 0:08:41.760 pitcher Cody Pote. Bellinger's father, Clay, was a Yankee on 0:08:41.840 --> 0:08:44.280 two World Championship team. Soto not the only one who's 0:08:44.280 --> 0:08:46.640 gone with the Yankees to the Mets. Clay Holmes was 0:08:46.679 --> 0:08:49.080 a Yankee reliever. He's now a Mets starter. 0:08:49.640 --> 0:08:51.719 I want to look back in my career and say, man, 0:08:51.840 --> 0:08:53.280 you know what what had come from that? 0:08:53.400 --> 0:08:54.720 And I think it was something that you know. 0:08:54.800 --> 0:08:57.440 Still a deep doubt I had, you know, a passion 0:08:57.480 --> 0:09:00.880 board and excited me and you know, very thankful for it. 0:09:01.600 --> 0:09:03.760 Yeah, the soccer Davis come, he's sit here with the mess. 0:09:04.920 --> 0:09:06.160 You stay here in New York and. 0:09:06.880 --> 0:09:07.440 Be with the mess. 0:09:07.600 --> 0:09:10.240 Holmes met the media yesterday, as did Devin Williams, who 0:09:10.280 --> 0:09:13.000 the Yanks acquired to replace Holmes. What has happened to 0:09:13.120 --> 0:09:15.760 the Rangers a month ago? A record of twelve and 0:09:15.880 --> 0:09:18.720 four since then three and eleven shut out by Lowling 0:09:18.840 --> 0:09:21.760 Nashville two nothing only the Predators ninth win of the season. 0:09:21.840 --> 0:09:24.720 Islanders also blank four nothing at Carolina. The Devils won 0:09:24.800 --> 0:09:27.640 four one at Saint Louis. In Vegas, Milwaukee won the 0:09:27.760 --> 0:09:30.679 NBA Cup held Oklahoma City only thirty one second half 0:09:30.760 --> 0:09:33.400 points and won ninety seven to eighty one. Giannis unto 0:09:33.400 --> 0:09:36.120 the Comfo twenty six points in a triple double. Also 0:09:36.160 --> 0:09:39.360 in Vegas, with some made for TV Golf, the PGA 0:09:39.520 --> 0:09:42.280 team of Rory McElroy and Scottie Scheffler easily defeated the 0:09:42.360 --> 0:09:45.640 live duo of Brooks Koepka and Bryson Deshambell. The Atlanta 0:09:45.679 --> 0:09:47.719 Falcons only a game at a first place, but they're 0:09:47.760 --> 0:09:51.240 making a quarterback change starting with Sunday's game against the Giants. 0:09:51.280 --> 0:09:54.520 They'll start rookie Michael Pennix Junior and bench the veteran 0:09:54.880 --> 0:09:57.439 Kirk Cousins, who has been struggling. Meanwhile, there may be 0:10:31.440 --> 0:10:34.319 a path to a deal for two Japanese automakers to 0:10:34.400 --> 0:10:36.679 take on the biggest carmaker in the world. Lots to 0:10:36.760 --> 0:10:38.520 discuss this morning, so let's get right to it with 0:10:38.559 --> 0:10:42.559 Bloomberg Radio and television news anchor Kritti Gupta Critty, Good morning. So, 0:10:42.760 --> 0:10:44.439 how big a surprise would it be if the FED 0:10:44.520 --> 0:10:46.800 decided they're going to pause today? 0:10:46.920 --> 0:10:50.720 Good morning, Good morning, Nathan. It would be a surprise, 0:10:50.840 --> 0:10:51.760 but perhaps not a shock. 0:10:51.800 --> 0:10:54.120 And I think that's a crucial difference here, simply because 0:10:54.480 --> 0:10:57.599 the market is primed and priced for what could be 0:10:58.200 --> 0:11:01.079 the last rate cut not only twenty twenty four, but 0:11:01.200 --> 0:11:02.760 that we could see for some time out of the 0:11:02.800 --> 0:11:05.319 Federal Reserve. But if they were to hold earlier, it 0:11:05.360 --> 0:11:09.719 would signal that there is perhaps extreme confidence in this 0:11:09.920 --> 0:11:14.000 economy's willingness to digest and ability to digest any sort 0:11:14.040 --> 0:11:16.880 of pitfalls that we may see into next year. And 0:11:16.960 --> 0:11:19.640 I think this is a really crucial one because if 0:11:19.760 --> 0:11:22.199 you do see a cut, there's questions of what data 0:11:22.880 --> 0:11:26.880 justifies that cut. Now, Federal Reserve officials will likely say, 0:11:26.920 --> 0:11:28.880 and have said on the wire and in the last 0:11:28.920 --> 0:11:31.120 couple of weeks and months, that any sort of cut 0:11:31.280 --> 0:11:34.480 is simply taking policy from a super restrictive level to 0:11:34.920 --> 0:11:37.920 a slightly less but still restrictive level in terms of 0:11:37.960 --> 0:11:41.200 being able to tackle that inflation uptick. But others may 0:11:41.360 --> 0:11:43.920 question that and say, is this rate cut, if we 0:11:44.000 --> 0:11:46.840 do indeed get one, something similar to a rate cut 0:11:46.920 --> 0:11:49.360 that we got in the likes of March of twenty 0:11:49.480 --> 0:11:50.160 nineteen when J. 0:11:50.320 --> 0:11:52.320 Powell had that insurance. 0:11:52.000 --> 0:11:55.320 Rate cut, even though the economy was doing quite well 0:11:55.360 --> 0:11:58.520 at the time, the unemployment rate was quite low, the 0:11:58.760 --> 0:12:00.679 peril's numbers were coming in quite strong, but it was 0:12:00.720 --> 0:12:03.640 an insurance rate cut in response to what could have 0:12:03.760 --> 0:12:07.160 been a more extreme trade war between the United States 0:12:07.200 --> 0:12:09.599 and China. And in retrospect, say in a couple of 0:12:09.640 --> 0:12:12.240 months time, there's a very real likelihood that we asked 0:12:12.240 --> 0:12:14.960 the same questions about what drove today's rate cut if 0:12:15.000 --> 0:12:16.880 we do indeed get one and. 0:12:16.920 --> 0:12:19.160 As if a FED day weren't enough. Now, this news 0:12:19.240 --> 0:12:23.199 that Nissan and Honda are apparently in merger talks, this 0:12:23.400 --> 0:12:26.839 is really a fight for survival for Nissan Critty it is. 0:12:27.160 --> 0:12:30.520 And look, there's a third and fourth player worth mentioning here, 0:12:30.559 --> 0:12:33.400 which is Renault has a more than forty three percent 0:12:33.480 --> 0:12:36.079 stake in Nissan at the moment. It's been trying to 0:12:36.200 --> 0:12:39.079 reduce at stake to about fifteen percent and do it 0:12:39.200 --> 0:12:41.040 in a way that they can get a pretty decent 0:12:41.200 --> 0:12:43.680 kind of bang for their buck. If they do see 0:12:43.720 --> 0:12:47.920 this kind of consolidation between Nissan and Honda, it could 0:12:47.960 --> 0:12:50.760 be a pretty big boost for the likes of Renault. 0:12:50.760 --> 0:12:53.199 But then there's another player here worth paying attention to, 0:12:53.559 --> 0:12:56.559 and that's Fox Con. What we know is kind of 0:12:56.559 --> 0:12:59.040 the assembler of smartphones. It's in the Apple supply chain. 0:12:59.320 --> 0:13:01.160 They've been trying to get a steak in the EV 0:13:01.320 --> 0:13:04.319 maker for some time and struggling to get that steak. 0:13:04.640 --> 0:13:06.640 If they do indeed get it, though, Nathan, it brings 0:13:06.720 --> 0:13:09.760 up a lot of questions about kind of cross border consolidation, 0:13:09.920 --> 0:13:14.160 cross border steaks between a Taiwanese company into what could 0:13:14.240 --> 0:13:16.360 be a Japanese carmcon giants. 0:13:16.720 --> 0:13:20.120 This is Bloomberg Daybreak, your morning podcast on the stories 0:13:20.200 --> 0:13:23.160 making news from Wall Street to Washington and beyond. 0:13:23.480 --> 0:13:25.840 Look for us on your podcast feed by six am 0:13:25.920 --> 0:13:29.280 Eastern each morning, on Apple, Spotify, or anywhere else you listen. 0:13:29.559 --> 0:13:32.360 You can also listen live each morning starting at five 0:13:32.400 --> 0:13:35.040 am Wall Street time on Bloomberg eleven three to zero 0:13:35.160 --> 0:13:38.000 in New York, Bloomberg in ninety nine to one in Washington, 0:13:38.120 --> 0:13:41.400 Bloomberg ninety two to nine in Boston, and nationwide on 0:13:41.600 --> 0:13:43.760 serious XM Channel one twenty one. 0:13:44.200 --> 0:13:46.880 Plus listen coast to coast on the Bloomberg Business app 0:13:47.000 --> 0:13:49.720 Now with Apple CarPlay and the Android Atto interfaces. 0:13:50.040 --> 0:13:52.600 And don't forget to subscribe to Bloomberg and News Now. 0:13:52.880 --> 0:13:55.400 It's the latest news whenever you want it in five 0:13:55.480 --> 0:13:58.520 minutes or less.
