I'm watching the Dodgers just pulverize the Brewers on Friday Night, sweeping them in the NLCS, sitting on my couch, and I'm thinking to myself, the Phillies versus the Dodgers, that was the world series. Speaker 2: I don't feel any better that they lost, and to say that, I believe is a loser's lament. The Phillies were beaten, and at times they beat themselves in that Dodgers series, giving away a three to nothing leading Game one, the crucial Game one in a five game series. But I think you can make a case they were the two best teams in baseball, and the Dodgers were better and they beat the Phillies. So I don't really find a lot of solace in the fact that the Phillies were knocked out by the best team in baseball. In fact, it makes you a little angry that they played so poorly, gave away a leading game one. We're fundamentally poor and ended up on the outside looking in.

Speaker 3: So that's kind of where I stand.

Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't have a I don't have a very dissimilar viewpoint on this thing. It's just frustrating that they couldn't play the kind of baseball necessary to get the big hit, make the big pitch that was necessary to win that series. And you know, I do think. I do think that at some point there's going to be a seating and I think they're probably going to be thinking about some of this stuff moving forward, as far as seeding the playoffs. In your next basic agreement, you might see some things where you have the right matchups, somehow, some way, at the right time. The NLCS should have been a Dodger than Phillies. It's as simple as that. For me, but that's not how it works sometimes. And the Phillies got beat, didn't play their best baseball and made some mistakes and couldn't get past the mighty Dodgers.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I really was though. I was watching that game on Friday night and oh, Tani, we're gonna get to his game a little bit on Friday night. Three homer game, and I'm thinking, God, the Phillies had a two to nothing lead in the sixth inning in Game one, they had the time run on second base with no outs in the ninth inning. In Game two, they had opportunities. Obviously they won Game three, Game four. Couple things go here or there. It's just it's just crazy you think back to those little, tiny moments. But you know, the Brewers scored four runs against the Dodgers pitching staff and that entire NLCS, And I'd found this story on MLB dot com about how dominant the Dodgers pitching is the Brewer. The Brewers in the NLCS against the Dodgers batted one eighteen. It's the lowest in a series of at least three games in post season history. Wow, Milwaukee Talley just fourteen hits and one hundred nineteen at bats over the four games. And you know, they really flipped the script with the with the starting pitching. Remember last year they were like opening and opening their way to the World Series. They almost seventy percent of their innings in this postseason have been used by Dodgers starting pitchers, so and then, and they average this postseason has been about forty five percent of all the other teams in the postseason, Philly's over fifteen.

Speaker 4: The Dodgers realized that they did not have the starting pitching that was really necessary to carry them, and they had to scramble last year and they just were out talented teams at the end of the year to win the World Series.

Speaker 4: Starter we can possibly get. In the reason why they started, you know, did what they did with Otani, did what they did with the glass Now, et cetera, et cetera, Yamamoto, the whole nine yards Sosaki. They they got them all and they knew that they were was a deficiency they had, and they handled it.

Speaker 2: And they prioritized getting them healthy throughout the regular season.

Speaker 2: Never seems like they put the pedal to the medal in the regular season, which can be dangerous because you know the old cliche you can't flip the switch, but gosh, they've they flipped the switch. I mean, just look at Snell. Look at Snell pitching the best baseball of his career. The criticism against him was, you know, he threw a lot of pitches, didn't go deep into games. He's kind of rectifying that. And I wrote down some numbers about their starting pitching. In the four games against Milwaukee, twenty eight to two thirds innings, they gave up nine hits, two runs, and they struck out thirty five. So and that's the Milwaukee Brewers, the team with not saying them the best team in the nationally, but they had the most wins in the National League. They they I don't think the best team naturally, but by no means are they pushover and the Dodgers just ground them up.

Speaker 1: Well, they're the team that everybody talked about, like that's the way you got to play nowadays. Put the ball in play, pass the baton and and that's kind of what they did all season long. And then it just tells you you have great starting pitching or just great pitching in general, and it's damn near impossible, damn near impossible to hit.

Speaker 1: Was thinking too, is one of you guys made this point last week in terms of the Dodgers loading up on starting pitching, is that was kind of what the Phillies were hoping they could do before Zach Wheeler got hurt. We had how many weeks and months were we sitting there, going Who's going to go in the bullpen in the postseason? It's going to be Lozardo? Is it going to be Suarez? And obviously they couldn't. They couldn't get to that point really because of because of Wheeler's injury. But gosh, you you have Sasaki back there and really really just unbelievable. So good Ye're looking good.

And then he crushes one out of the ballpark in the fourth inning, four hundred and sixty nine feet, and then he crushes a third homer, becomes the twelfth player with a three homer game in the postseason, first pitcher to ever do that. No picture has ever hit two home runs in the game in the postseason. So sho, hey Otani. And it got me thinking of, like, I've never seen obviously in person anything like that, But it got me thinking about the best performances I've ever seen in person in my life at the ballpark. What comes to mind when you, guys, think of the best live performance not watching it on TV, that you've ever seen. What jumps to mind for you guys, all right.

Speaker 2: So those two and two of the ones that really jump out for me games that I was at, games that I actually covered. Nineteen ninety six World Series. Andy Pettitt. He gets lit up in Game one for the Yankees, and the Braves go out win the first two games in Yankee Stadium. Yankees go down to Atlanta win three in a row, setting them up to come back to Yankee Stadium and win Game six, win the World Series.

Speaker 3: But Game five, it was a rematch of Game one.

Speaker 2: Pettit and John Smoltz, they were both unbelievable. I had a like eight shutout and Yankees ended up winning that Game one. Nothing Smoltz gave up an underrun run. Just those two guys just going against each other, but the way Pettitt just battled that game and rebounded from Game one. Pitches, you know, basically him in Wetland combined for a shutout to get him to Game six. That's a performance I will always remember. And another one in old Yankee Stadium two thousand and three World Series, the upstart Miami Marlins or Florida Marlins in those days beat the Yankees in uh, I guess it was six games and twenty three year old Josh Beckett. I mean he was like Nolan Ryan. He had he had big stuff, He had a big personality. He had bravado and cockiness, and he backed it all up. And Jack McKeon, you know, Trader Jack was the manager and he wasn't screwing around. He pitches a twenty three year old kid on three days rest in Game six and Beckett goes out there nine innings, five hits, no runs, two walks, nine strikeouts, and Florida Marlins won the World Series on his back three days rest, even made the final put out of the game. It was an incredible performance by Josh Beckett. So and that Yankees team had so much thunder in it and he.

Speaker 2: So that was a big memorable one that I was there for.

Speaker 4: Yeah, so I have to say the Halliday no hitter in the playoffs, first time he ever, you know, pitched in the playoffs, is what the dream that he had and the reason why he became a Philadelphia Philly and so that that was a real emotional one. Obviously, the home run by by Stairs, that game was an amazing game when they were played him in an NLCS.

Speaker 4: You know, when Jimmy Rowlands hit that double or triple or whatever to drive in again it was boxing both times. Yeah, that was that was huge as well. It was one of the most exciting games. I'll never forget myself, jumping on top of the jumping on top of the counter and running running along with Chewcho as he's sliding home. Pretty amazing moment for me.

Speaker 4: Those guys seemed to match up like thirty times, and I was a bat boy watching these two guys work.

Speaker 5: It was inevitably a two to one or one nothing game almost every single time. And to watch these two guys bitch was one of the more fascinating things. It was the one thing that made me.

Speaker 4: Fall in love with like pitching and how dominant it can be. Just watching those two guys go at it for years and I got to watch it at the ground level. That was as a kid fifteen, sixteen, seventeen years old. One more thing I will mention the battle between Nolan Ryan and Pete Rose. I think Pete was trying to get his like break a record at the time. It was just before or just after they had that break in nineteen eighty one. I think there was a split season and there was a big battle between Nolan. Ryan was pitching at the time for Houston I believe yes had to be Houston, and he was just firing pellets and he basically said, Okay, Pete, you're gonna get that record time or record breaking hit. Good luck hitting my five thousand mile an hour fastball basically blew him away, and Pete Rose after the last time he struck him out he struck him out two or three times that day. Pete Rose took off his helmet he had one of those half helmets, you know, and tipped it right to him and said congratulations and walked back. You back into the dugout, and I was sitting there, kneeling on the towel down at the vet watching this happen. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. One last thing, any game in the NLCS. In nineteen eighty, Houston Versus the release the most amazing NLCS in the history of the game by far, most drama, most huge hits, most crazy plays, no doubt. And so I know that was just one, but that was about ten.

Speaker 3: I just mentioned fun and those are all great.

Speaker 1: A good eighty NLCS. I feel like it's one those underrated and it shouldn't be an LCS, Like, in other words, if it was if that, if that exact series had involved the Yankees and the Red Sox or something like that, everybody eighty eighty a LCS that was the best of all time because it was the Phillies and the Astros not doesn't get nearly enough attention. But there was a lot of drama. Yeah, for me, for sure, Hallidays postseason no hitter comes to mind in you know, individual performance. I always think about Cole Hammill's no hitter in his final start with the Phillies, just because it's just like, are you kidding me? This guy's about to get traded? This is he goes into that start, this might be the last time I ever pitched for the Phillies. And he goes out and fires a no hitter against a very talented Cubs team that was one year away from winning the World Series. And and you know Schwarber was on that team, you know, Pete, Chris Bryant and all those guys, right, I mean they were all on that squad. So that was absolutely incredible and it didn't go the Phillies way, of course, But Game five of the twenty eleven NLDS Chris Carpenter going toe to toe with his best friend, Royal Halliday, I mean, that was that. That is an all time, you know, all time performance by two just incredible pictures. So those that was that was unbelievable, and.

Speaker 2: There's so much emotion on that night. I remember walking into that clubhouse and seeing Doc. He was distraught and absolutely distraught with his head buried in the locker, and big bulletproof Ryan Howard like a superman is hobbling around on crutches, and Victorino tears up his World Series tickets and drops him in the in the waste basket. It was just an unbelievable night.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I remember, I remember talking to I think it was chasing. He remembers walking back into the clubhouse and Roy was in that back hallway just kind of sitting on the ground just before he went into the clubhouse and then just sat in front of his locker for about twenty minutes, I mean, just instill in full uniform. Guys, some guys are already changed and left or were leaving, but Roy was still in full uniform, just utterly depressed, defeated. And yeah, that's that's one I'll I'll never forget.

I think about the show a lotto over the weekend. I was thinking about a lot, But think about this, Okay, Trek Scuble or any starting pitcher. In regards to the Phillies rotation, Ah, this Phillies rotation is super strong. You get Christopher Sanchez, You've got Jesus Lozardo. They were great this postseason, great this postseason. Now they're probably going to lose Rangers Suarez probably, And then you look at the rest of the rotation. Zach Wheeler coming off surgery. You don't know when he's going to be back. You don't know what he's going to be like when he comes back. Is he going to be cy young Zach Wheeler? Everybody hope. So we don't know. Aaron Nola coming off the worst year of his career. He looked great in Game four, our Game three for three innings. What's he going to be like next year? We don't know. Andrew Painter, is he going to make the rotation coming out of camp? Maybe?

He wasn't setting the world on fire and Triple A to the point where they decided we're not going to promote this guy after a lot of talk that July ish, we would maybe think about the Phillers is thing, Maybe we think about bringing him up, Taiwan Walker coming in fourth year of a seventy two million dollar deal. So it's not like you look at this rotation right now and go, why would we even think about addressing starting pitching? I don't know.

Speaker 2: Well, it's the most important element on a team. You never can have enough of it. That's one reason why you have the conversation. And that guy is, you know, a mega talent, that's another reason you talk about it.

Speaker 2: You build a with the clock ticking here on this nucleus, it would help you build a really difficult staff to contend with in October. So those are all reasons you'd have to talk about it. You know, I don't know that I would pull the trigger, but it's certainly interesting to talk about building a mega you know, earth crushing rotation and if it stays healthy, you know, riding.

Speaker 4: Yeah, and there may be another opportunity with Paralta being out on the block at some point because Milwaukee Brewers aren't going to they don't want to pay, and they want to try to maximize, you know, their assets, and that's typically what they do. Don't be surprised by Paralta getting bounced where so they'll be thinking about that as well. Hey man, I'm all about the starting pitching all the time, every time, every single time until the cows come home. I mean, look what the Dodgers are doing right.

Speaker 4: I would entertain the discussion. I know it's just for one year, right schoogles one year and then a free agent, but I try to do it and sign him and see where it goes.

Speaker 2: And I think Dave is of your he's the starting pitching guy too, Dombrowski, I mean, yeah, there wasn't you know, we a big need to upgrade the starting rotation last year, but they won't get Lozardo. In twenty twenty four trade deadline, everybody who's focused was right handed back bullpen and all of a sudden he's in deep on Garrett Crochet makes a big offer and makes the White Sox have to think about it, to the point where some people still can't believe the White Sox didn't take the deal.

Speaker 2: Gonna, you know, prioritized starting pitching, even when it might look like he doesn't need.

Speaker 1: It, right, I mean, even if you know, again we're just just talking. Even if Scooble doesn't come into play, there are other free agent pitchers out there that could be available that maybe you think about to bolster the rotation. If you're worried about Nola, if you're worried about Wheeler, if you're not sure what you're gonna get a out of Andrew Painter, you know, we know what kind of Taiwan Walker is. I mean, there's other free agent pitchers in the market looking at some of the names, and a lot of them are going to be expensive. So if you're not going to resign Ranger Squarez, you're probably not going to sign probably not going to sign Dylan Ceese from Bervaldez. I don't know if he'd want him anyway, based off of him throwing a ball at his catcher's head the regular season. You know, Jack flaghery, Yeah, I'm sorry, go ahead and finishing off Jack Jack Bladder. He's got an opt out. You mentioned Palta. He's got an eight million dollar club option, which seems insane that the Brewers would trade him, but they Corbyn Burns a couple of years ago, they traded him. Nick Martinez is a free agent. Chris Bassett, Michael King's got a mutual option. Again, mutual options are almost always declined by either party. The Cubs show to Imanaga, he's got a kind of a crazy option. He's got a three year, fifty seven million dollar club option, or like a one year player option. Zach Gallon, Merril Kelly. Those are some of the free agent pitchers of the market. So something to monitor, keep an eye on. I wouldn't be totally stunned if the Phillies added a starting pitcher this offseason. I think they have other priorities, but it's something to consider.

Speaker 4: And think about this. If you had a choice, would you re sign Kyle Schwarber or would you trade three of your best prospects for Trek Schoubel.

Speaker 4: Interesting, so, would you sign Tk Scooble for seven years at you know, forty million dollars a year, or would you sign Kyle Schwarber and then piece together the rest of your rotation at a gallon with a you know whatever, I mean if you added an you know piece, because you have to wonder whether or not Zach Wheeler really is going to be able to come back, because that will affect your decision making if you want to continue to contend.

Speaker 2: I would love to have the picture in the arm. I just I'd be concerned about. This is a team that needs to get younger and to shed two promising position guys who could man a position here sometime in twenty twenty six, young, lower payrolls, just you know, youthful talent is what this team is begging for. But on the other hand, to have a dominant guy like that Adams who had already pretty good rotation as your other dominant guy Wheeler is getting older and is a question. There's a lot of attractiveness to that as well.

Maybe they got to a great start, maybe they make a couple of nice moves this offseason go So nevertheless, you don't know which way the Phillies are going to go this offseason.

But interestingly, in his last three postseason series it was six Wild Card series, six games he batted combined one point thirty six with a four to twenty two ops. So this is the first time he's really had some postseason success. But man, it's coming at a great time. Game seven.
