00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio, Springing. 00:00:05 Speaker 2: Ross Tucker, CBS Sports Westwood One analyst, host of the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. You got a Mike McCarthy cliche that he utters today. 00:00:15 Speaker 3: No, but I kind of like. 00:00:16 Speaker 4: Dan, you gotta you got a decent Pittsburgh accent. You gotta you got a decent you do a decent Mike McCarthy Pittsburgh. 00:00:23 Speaker 3: I've never heard that before. 00:00:25 Speaker 2: Well, he just loved football. It's all he does. He loved football. We're blue collar team, blue collar town. Just bla, we love football. Uh you went to Princeton and you tell us all the time. 00:00:39 Speaker 5: Uh No, I don't. 00:00:41 Speaker 3: I don't say to you. 00:00:46 Speaker 2: You got a Princeton zip up three quarters and you got your Princeton helmet behind you. 00:00:53 Speaker 4: Yeah, it's branding, Dan, it's branding. I was not like some Hall of Fame player. Pro Bowl players are gonna remember me. They're gonna pay him. They're gonna say, oh, yeah, he's the guy that went to prison. He's a smart guy. Hey, No, Brandy, it's intentional. You might have made the Pro Bowl. 00:01:07 Speaker 2: Considering that Shador Sanders gets to make the Pro Bowl, you might they might have said, we need we need somebody, how about you, Ross, That's. 00:01:15 Speaker 3: Actually a good point. In two thousand and four, I definitely had a better season than this year. 00:01:22 Speaker 4: Not a quarterback, No, But back then, back then they would actually like it was hard to make the Pro Bowl. I I honestly, I talked about this this morning on the Ross Tucker Football podcast, And forgive my ignorance, I legitimately don't even know how he. 00:01:41 Speaker 3: Was the next alternate up like it was. 00:01:44 Speaker 4: I'm sure he won the fan vote, like in a landslide, Like how is it Drake May's out? 00:01:50 Speaker 3: So Shador Sanders is in. 00:01:52 Speaker 5: A lot of people had to say no. 00:01:56 Speaker 3: Evidently, But I get it. 00:01:57 Speaker 2: If this is a TV show, that that's what they're doing. 00:02:02 Speaker 5: I understand you're going to bring him in. I mean, I'm okay with it. 00:02:08 Speaker 2: I don't value the Pro Bowl designation like I used to. And my suggestion is that you have an NFC AFC Pro Bowl roster that you announced, whether they can play in it or not, you're still the Pro Bowl player at that position for that year. Anybody else is just a Pro Bowl Games participant and should be noted and not on your resume. 00:02:32 Speaker 5: That you were a Pro Bowl player. 00:02:35 Speaker 3: I agree with that one hundred percent. 00:02:37 Speaker 4: That seems like a fantastic way to go about it, because there needs to be some distinction between the guys that actually earned it and the guys that were the fourth alternate and ended up. 00:02:49 Speaker 3: But don't even I honestly don't even know what it's called the Pro Bowl. They play like flag football. I really don't even know what they do anymore. 00:02:56 Speaker 2: They have challenges and tuggle war and you know, okay, but let's be fair. Let's say you had a chance in two thousand and four and they said, hey, we would like for you to be an alternate for the Pro Bowl. 00:03:12 Speaker 5: Would you have done it? 00:03:14 Speaker 2: Absolutely if you knew that there were like twenty linemen in front of you who declined going to the Pro Bowl. 00:03:22 Speaker 4: Yes, you know why because if you looked at my Wikipedia, it would say Ross Tucker is. 00:03:29 Speaker 3: A former Pro Bowl offensive lineman from Why Miss defensiveany It's like it's like I won, I can't remember, Oh, oh, I know what it is. 00:03:38 Speaker 4: I do Eagles preseason games, as you know, Dan, and I've been I've been nominated or we've been nominated for. 00:03:47 Speaker 3: Multiple mid Atlantic Emmys. Right, So you know what I am. I'm an Emmy nominated broadcast. 00:03:56 Speaker 4: And that's legit. You can look it up. There's links and everything. I am an Emmy nominated brog. I haven't won it yet, but I've been nominated. 00:04:05 Speaker 3: Seaton. 00:04:05 Speaker 5: Would you give ross the two poll questions today? 00:04:10 Speaker 3: Yeah? 00:04:10 Speaker 6: Right now, We've got up there which wins more games? Gut feeling or analytics? And then another one here from PAULI, which would NFL fans prefer the new head coach of their team, the hot young assistant or the older established coach. 00:04:27 Speaker 4: Well, the second one is are you asking my opinion or what I think people want? 00:04:31 Speaker 3: You know? 00:04:31 Speaker 5: Your opinion? 00:04:33 Speaker 4: Ooh, my opinion is probably the older established coach. 00:04:42 Speaker 3: No, I don't know what you know. 00:04:44 Speaker 4: I everybody immediately goes to Mike McCarthy, but I'm looking at more like Stefanski, John Harbaugh sala. I think what these teams are doing by hiring guys and giving them a second chance or a second. 00:04:58 Speaker 3: I think that's smart. 00:05:00 Speaker 4: You know, everybody in life learns from your mistakes and gets you would think you'd like to think would get better when you get a second opportunity. You know, I certainly feel like I'm a better broadcaster than I was, you know, when I. 00:05:13 Speaker 3: Was starting out. 00:05:14 Speaker 4: So I'll give me the guy with experience, because you're really rolling the dice with the guy that's never done it before. In terms of analytics versus gut, I will lean probability, I will lean to the numbers. 00:05:29 Speaker 3: I will lean analytics. But I think I don't like how that's phrased. 00:05:36 Speaker 2: So one of my ability probability is Okay, when you say analytics, it triggers something in people. 00:05:46 Speaker 4: Two thousand percent correct, And that's the thing, Like analytics is just probability. 00:05:52 Speaker 3: And I know, uh Stink was on with you guys yesterday and you have a lot of attention. He doesn't like nerds and all that stuff. 00:06:00 Speaker 4: You know, I know that any player that's ever played, the defensive coordinators pour overtape to try to identify what you're most likely to do in these situations. You know, when they're in this personnel grouping, they're seventy five percent run to the writer thirty two percent. What I'm just making it up, Okay, All that the analytics are trying to do is allow you to know what the probability is of each decision you could make the issue I have Dan, let's talk about the Sean Payton decision, all right, and let's just say, because that's all where Greg Olsen said, the analytics said to kick, which surprised me. 00:06:45 Speaker 3: By the way fourth and one from the fourteen that would surprise me. 00:06:48 Speaker 4: I'd like to talk to Greg about that and see where he's getting that information. 00:06:53 Speaker 7: But these are. 00:06:54 Speaker 4: Living, breathing games, Like do the analytics which you've created before the game, how much do they take into account that you have Jared Sidham as your quarterback? 00:07:04 Speaker 3: How much you take into account is going to snow in the second half. How about the fact. 00:07:08 Speaker 4: That if you kick the field goal, you're going up by two scores. That's why I think it's really important that these coaches take into account what the win probability tells them, take into account what the analytics recommends, but then also use your own judgment. 00:07:26 Speaker 3: It should really just be one. 00:07:28 Speaker 4: Of the inputs that you're factoring into ultimately making the decision, because some of the other inputs you should be considering are not built into the analytical model, which, by the way, every team has their own. So when you see these like TV, these games they're like the analytics, say, yeah, the analytics is not some bible that is like every team's reading from the same book of analytics. It's every team has their own model based on their own things that they value and don't value. 00:07:58 Speaker 2: Ross Tucker, CBS Sports Westwood One broadcaster and host of the Ross Tucker Football Podcast. He will be the color analyst on the Super Bowl for UK Radio. 00:08:13 Speaker 3: How about that? 00:08:13 Speaker 5: How is your British accent? 00:08:16 Speaker 4: Oh, I'm not gonna try to do that, but you know, the play by play guy is the redheaded guy with the beard, Will Gavin, who went viral for some of his calls during the playoffs. 00:08:27 Speaker 3: He's play by play. I'm color. 00:08:29 Speaker 4: It's gonna be electric. I have no idea who is going to be listening to the Super Bowl on the radio in London at two am? No idea if there's anybody, but I promise you, as guys my witness, that is going to be an electric broadcast Will Gavin and me. 00:08:48 Speaker 3: If you happen to be listening to your radio. 00:08:52 Speaker 4: And what's it called abby whatever the abby thing is called, I don't even know. 00:08:57 Speaker 3: Twelve thirty to four, we are going to be killing it. 00:09:02 Speaker 5: Are you is are you the John Madden of UK radio. 00:09:08 Speaker 3: I'm gonna be for the Super Bowl? 00:09:09 Speaker 4: Okay, I will I In all sincerity, I'm gonna ask Will this because I'm interviewing him today for my podcast. 00:09:17 Speaker 3: If you're in the UK and. 00:09:20 Speaker 4: You're really into football enough that you're gonna watch the game that you're gonna be part of the game. 00:09:25 Speaker 3: From twelve thirty to four am local time, you're probably watching it, right, You're probably not listening to me, although maybe they can watch it and mute the TV and then listen to me. People do that. That works. 00:09:40 Speaker 5: You never know who's gonna be listening. 00:09:43 Speaker 3: That's right. 00:09:43 Speaker 5: You never know. 00:09:45 Speaker 2: There could be somebody who hears you and they go, wow, you know what I have that guy in mind for. They're the director for Marty Supreme, the Timothy Schallomet movie. It's a big fan of Howard Stern, and Howard had a couple of his callers, regular callers that this guy put in the movie with Timothy shallow May. And one Mary Anne from Brooklyn is in a scene with Timothy shallow May. And it's only because that one of the Saftie brothers said I want her in the movie. 00:10:20 Speaker 3: You never know that. 00:10:22 Speaker 4: That's incredible, Almost as incredible as the fact that I'm familiar with who that actor is and I've seen him like Court sided the Knicks, and but I don't really watch television and movies like other than like documentaries or football documentaries. Dan, I swear I thought his name was Challamet. I had never I had never heard it pronounced before. I had no idea it was Shallo May and that Challa May sounds so much better than Challamet. 00:10:54 Speaker 5: Yeah, Timothy Challa May. 00:10:58 Speaker 4: Timothy Chara May is not from Pittsburgh. 00:11:03 Speaker 2: He's from New York. His dad is French, Timothy Chela May. The Rams lost because Dot dont. 00:11:12 Speaker 4: Uh because the kid muffed the punt, I mean, and their defense blew it, you know. I mean, those are the two things that jumped out to me. That's rough to have a guy that earlier in the game. He's a second year kid from Florida, A and m Xavier Smith. 00:11:29 Speaker 3: He muffs it, Dan, but they recover it. 00:11:33 Speaker 4: So you could have made the decision theoretically to put Kyen Williams back there. The kid muffs another one, they get a touchdown, then you put Kyen Williams back there. That was obviously a huge difference. But I don't know what happened to the Rams defense. 00:11:50 Speaker 3: I mean, Clint. 00:11:51 Speaker 4: Kubiak, that's a guy that should get a head coaching job the OC for the Seahawks. He impressed me, and they lit up the Ram The Rams def needed to be better than that. I mean, Stafford played unbelievable and they still lost. 00:12:06 Speaker 5: The Broncos lost because. 00:12:10 Speaker 4: Sean Payton got out coached and Jared Sidham did the only things he can't do. I mean, it felt like to me that and I think Sean Payton's a good coach. But you gotta kick the field goal there. You gotta kick the field goal, you gotta go up two scores. I thought that was and that was not hindsight. I'm literally eating the press box food in Seattle. Ask Kurt owner name drop, stay next to Kurt Orner, Hall of Famer, and we're watching the game, and as soon as it's fourth and one from the fourteen, Kurt and I are both like, kicked the field goal, go up two scores. And then Kurt even says he's going to run the running back into the flat, which was exactly the play call, and it was totally covered, so they should. 00:12:52 Speaker 3: Kick the field goal there and then Stidham. 00:12:55 Speaker 4: I mean, if Stidham just doesn't fumble that backwards pass or ever calling it, the Broncos probably win the game. It's a screen pass. I thought I was Sean Payton. That's a safe play. Dirt the ball. 00:13:08 Speaker 3: Broncos probably win that football game. 00:13:10 Speaker 5: What are the Steelers getting with Mike McCarthy. 00:13:15 Speaker 4: Tough, tough, hard nose Pittsburgh football coach. He's just a guy from Pittsburgh. Loves football, always has, always will. When I was working a pitt I would headed the overnight shift on the turnpike collecting tolls. I actually loved Mike McCarthy. I dude, imagine not only getting a chance to coach three NFL teams, but it's the Packers, the Cowboys and the Steelers. I mean, that will never happen again. That will never be a thing. It's funny because I have a lot of friends. There's Steelers fans. They are very upset, and I think the big thing is they kind of wanted to reset Dan, but you never know what the owners looking for. McCarthy must have sold them on. I can get Aaron to comeback. We can do one more run at this thing with Cam Hayward and TJ. Watt and this core group of guys. And if you've noticed the Steelers, that's. 00:14:18 Speaker 3: What they like. 00:14:19 Speaker 4: They like to be in the mix. They like to win nine or ten games and make the playoffs. And that must have been what they wanted to hear. But I mean, he can do it for six to eight years and be competitive. It just I think Steelers fans were ready to go to a new era, and I don't want to say rebuild, but they were ready for a young coach and a new young quarterback. 00:14:43 Speaker 2: More impressive the turnaround by Indiana Football or the Patriots this year. 00:14:54 Speaker 3: It's a really good question. 00:14:56 Speaker 4: I'll say Indiana Football just because they've been so bad for so long to go from there to you know, to win this the national championship in two years at the college level and I know the portals change stuff in nil or whatever what Rabel's done. And the Patriots are super impressive because I did a couple of their games on TV last year. 00:15:20 Speaker 3: They had the worst receiving corps in the league. They had the worst offensive line in the league. 00:15:25 Speaker 4: But you could tell Drake May was the goods. You could tell Drake May was the real deal. So and they were very I think poorly coached. Probably last year coaching was an issue. So I'll still say Indiana's more impressive than New England's had. 00:15:45 Speaker 3: I mean, Dan, think about New England's run to the Super Bowl here. They probably don't win that game unless TJ. Stroud loses his mind. 00:15:53 Speaker 4: They probably don't win against Denver unless Peyton doesn't kick the field goal in Stidham makes those decision. It's funny because I just recorded the even Money betting podcast and my co said they are limping to the super Bowl. 00:16:07 Speaker 3: That might be a little bit of a stretch. I don't know if I go that far, but needless to. 00:16:11 Speaker 4: Say, the handicappers are not very impressed by how the Patriots are playing going to the super Bowl, which is why the Seahawks are favored by as much as they are. 00:16:21 Speaker 2: Ross Tucker, the Voice of English Football, Are Football? 00:16:28 Speaker 3: I like that. I got to add that to the Wikipedia. 00:16:31 Speaker 4: The Voice the Super Bowl Voice, Yes of English Football. 00:16:36 Speaker 2: Yeah, we'll see you next week in San Francisco. 00:16:40 Speaker 4: Yes, six Am. Fritzi's only texted me seven times about it so far. Seven times, Todd, there's a pretty good chance at six ten am San Francisco Time, Oh Todd, I overslept. I can't make it. I really just want it. Like he's gonna have a nervous breakdown. It's unbelievable. 00:16:59 Speaker 2: If he is gonna have a nervous breakdown, he would have already had it. Just Sam, We'll see you next week. 00:17:07 Speaker 3: See you guys. 00:17:08 Speaker 5: That's Ross Tucker. 00:17:10 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio app. 00:17:19 Speaker 8: Hey, it's Ben, host of The Fifth Hour with Ben Maller. Listen to the Fifth Hour with Ben Maller on the iHeartRadio app, Apple. 00:17:47 Speaker 3: Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. 00:17:49 Speaker 2: We've been talking analytics. We've been talking analytics since the Denver Broncos fourth and one call. Those who were all in on going forward at fourth and one and those who he should kick the field goal in that situation. Sam Schwartstein does this for a living Amazon Prime, the football analytics expert there. When did analytics become a bad word here in sports? 00:18:18 Speaker 3: I don't know. 00:18:18 Speaker 9: For me, it's always been a good word. When I was playing at Stanford, we used it a ton on decision making, mostly from a team tendency point of view. But I think what happened when early two thousands when teams started changing how they approached the decision making process. And we're using what has been popularized from the hitting game of football, which is a based off of a lot of the hitting game of baseball, where we're able to find that field position can contribute a lot to what you're likely to do next or predict out the future scenarios and how much harder it is to play from inside your own five. And you know, with the dawn of football, three points two field goal possessions is actually worse than one touchdown possession with the seven points and that changing a lot of how we can approach the math of a game. I think probably the early to late twenty tens is when it started to shift and become a big thing. That and anytime you change it, it's gonna cause some friction there. 00:19:14 Speaker 2: Just feels like if we said probability, people wouldn't have as much of a problem as analytics sounds like I'm smarter than you as opposed to probability. 00:19:26 Speaker 5: I don't know. We don't recoil when we hear probability. 00:19:30 Speaker 9: You're hitting the nail on the head. And a large part of the decision making process in analytics, as you say, is the conversion probability, right, and that fourth and one. The next Gen Stats model had a sixty five percent to convert, but when you look at it from a run versus pass scenario was seventy percent on the run and fifty five percent on the pass. And they choose to call a pass play right, So it's changing the math based on the play call. I think that's what's hard when you you have these public models like the Next Gen Stats model or different models that can often come up with different solutions. We're never going to have all the information that the team has But what these models can do is help inform how should you game plan. When I used to consult with teams, I would say, just like you have a third down period, you should start thinking about having a fourth down period, and new play designs, things like the Tush push come out of it. At Stanford, we had a ninety five percent conversion rate on short yardage one. I moved the ball forward a yard and a half typically until Notre Dame found out, and then on the other side of it was we had a unique play design looked a lot like the Tush push. We call it sixty four League dive. And when you're running behind David DeCastro and handing the ball off to guys like Steffan Taylor, it's gonna convert. And so it changes the math and the pro and the conversion probability, and you need to focus on mostly, hey, here's a guiding principle on how you should approach fourth down. But the conversion probably is so important. And when I would consult with teams, it's all about it's conversion probably is not real, it's what's happened before in the similar situations. It's how confident are you in your play call in that scenario. 00:21:05 Speaker 2: Yeah, but I'm trying to understand this, Sam that the game is fluid. It's can I upgrade my analytics during a game that's going to factor in Their defensive line is better than we thought. The wind is whipping up, the weather is coming in. You already are factoring in Jared's Stidham into this equation before the game. But how do you upgrade during a game. 00:21:30 Speaker 9: That's a big part of what teams do. So the teams will you'll often hear people go go buy the book. Well, they actually print out a book based on what they think the game will be like and what scenario they're in to help guide their decision. And you look old school at the slide role looking for the situation. Go okay, coach, if we get to a fourth and two or less here, we should go for it. He says that typically the analytics expert him or her will say that on around the first down, once they cross the fifty end special scenarios, maybe sometimes in their own territory, and they're giving that feedback on first down, so we know what to do on fourth down. And so what happens with the update is if you've predicted this to be a shootout and no one's moving the ball kind of got to start going off a field there, right, Or if you've an entered a scenario fourth and four and you've already used all your really good fourth and fourth place and they have a beat on what you're doing on fourth and four, that might change your confidence in your conversion probability in those scenarios and ultimately in these fourth ones, and you're gonna get models telling you to go for it. You really need to have the QB sneak involved because that changes the math so much that if you QB sneak on fourth and one, it has a conversion probably in league wider on seventy two percent. We know the push push and Josh Allen is different and better. If you don't, even if you run the ball, it's still around a fifty four percent conversion prop So it changes the math based on that play design. So if those plays aren't working and you have to move off of it, it's just as valuable as the weather changing or hey, we expected something out of this Drake may offense that they're not performing that way, it might change our decision making. 00:23:03 Speaker 2: But if I have analytics, and you have analytics, chances are they're gonna sync up. I know what you're doing and you know what I'm doing. Don't they cancel each other out? 00:23:15 Speaker 9: No, because of how valuable field position is, and it's why we're seeing lower scoring games, shorter games, and fewer drives. When I did the rule book at the XFL, it was twelve twelve and a half drives per game. It's down to eleven drives per game. That might have seen them a lot, but that's one fewer scoring opportunity because we're having longer drives and you're starting in different field position spots. You know, as good as the dynamic kickoff is helping teams start closer, failed fourth down conversion inside the five, you don't see those points on the scoreboard, but when you look at the expected points, teams score only probably three percent of the time when they start inside their on five yard line. So it changes, Oh okay, now you're likely to get the ball back in scoring position. And that's what's going through the mind of Sean Payton, because hey, even if I don't fail here, my defense is playing great, I'll still likely get the ball back on my own forty which is a great spot to start. 00:24:06 Speaker 2: Okay, that's fair. What would you have done in the moment? What did you say in the moment on the fourth in one call by the Broncos Well. 00:24:14 Speaker 9: I was on a plane to London. That's where I'm doing this call from. 00:24:16 Speaker 3: Right now. 00:24:17 Speaker 9: We started our innovation process, so I was on game cast, couldn't get the game streaming. But I probably go fourth there. It depends on the game plan. Jared Stidham. They felt confident his running ability. 00:24:27 Speaker 5: I hate that call, though, Sam I. 00:24:29 Speaker 9: Hate it too. I would rather him have his own read or something. But to me, I'm basing a lot of my fourth and one decision off of QB sneak and I really want to have it. It's why I love the teams that use the giant tight end to go in and do it, because you're not contingent on the quarterback or putting the quarterback in danger to do it. An Aj Barner, a Connor Hayward. Those scenarios I would probably lean on. And when one of the beautiful things about next Gen status is we actually see where the ball actually was on TV. You're just going to see it, says fourth and one, It's actually fourth and one plus four or one point four yards. So because we're in that little it's not an integer, it's not a solid number on every time to go for it. That's probably why they wanted to call the bootleg. But I also don't like the call. When I would do the rules of the XFL, I never would tell the coaches what play to call because that's not my expertise. Right I have certain things I like to do, but I'm not a play caller or play a designer, and so I'm gonna lean on Sean Payton for what he wants to do. But he probably doesn't love the call either right now, No. 00:25:27 Speaker 2: I don't think he does gut feeling over analytics. How do you balance that? 00:25:35 Speaker 9: I from my point of view, I lean heavily on the analytics, and that drives my gut feeling. If you watch Prime Vision in next Gen Stats, you're gonna hear me talk about team tendencies and how they approach the game, very similar how I prepared for games, all driven by analytics and data. Where I think gut feeling can come in is the same thing about those numbers. If I know you aren't going to blitz from your numbers. It can be a tendency and can beat me. If I know that you're doing a tendency breaker in game, I might change my thinking. 00:26:05 Speaker 2: So I always and the Patriots did something different though, because you had two linemen who came right through on that play and the defensive back could have had an interception. So they completely knew what was going on here exactly. 00:26:20 Speaker 9: And that's where they're lining up in a unique formation stop the sneak as well as give a tougher read to the quarterback. And I think that's where first half timeouts I don't really have too much. I'm not holding onto them as much as I am for the second half timeouts. So if you see something funky, we talk about that all the time at Prime. It's like when we have our red orbs show up and something funky's going on, Like, hey, chill out a little bit, let's take a breather before you just really dive in. 00:26:47 Speaker 2: How much do you factor in the pressure of the game That regular season is one thing, playoff game and now Super Bowl Sunday. 00:26:57 Speaker 9: What happens in football is so much of the game is hinged on about six plays we play, have one hundred and thirty scrimmage plays per game, about one hundred and eighty plays total, and six plays may decide the game. Just like been at the poker's table. You can win over time playing small hands, but you get rich playing the big hands. You could also bust. And I think there's certain teams. If I'm a much better team and i feel much better in my confidence, I'm gonna be probably less likely to run more dangerous plays. Versus if I'm the underdog in that scenario, I'm probably gonna hedge higher. I'm putting all my chips in the table. 00:27:34 Speaker 5: Did you play for Jim Harball? 00:27:36 Speaker 9: I played three years for Jim and two years for coach show David Shaw. 00:27:40 Speaker 5: Okay, hardball buy into analytics. 00:27:45 Speaker 9: Depends tendencies very much driven by it. So what Stanford we had under Greg Roman, he started this was to kill an alert system, and it was all based on team tendencies and it all depended on what he thought his team could do. 00:27:58 Speaker 3: Great. 00:27:58 Speaker 9: We had big Fangio Colin plays for this thing about that Stanford football team. Like Vic Colin plays, you had Andrew Luck. It was a funny meme from one of the message boards saying Sam Schwartzen was only non millionaire from that offense, so you know, go true and I think you know that was a big focus on what they wanted to do. But we also had a stellar defense, and so he's bought in on anything that will help him win. And I think that's that's the big thing with him and Coach Shaw is a very similar way. People would hate when Coach Shaw would punt from opponent territory, But hey, we won the Rose Bowl, something Jim never did, you know, So it is a big big deal for how do I play it on my team strengths? 00:28:40 Speaker 2: But you also were cheating then you would hike the ball that you moved it up right. 00:28:47 Speaker 9: So how do you move on and a half? 00:28:48 Speaker 5: Okay, how do you do that? And nobody's calling you on it. 00:28:51 Speaker 9: I'm gonna have to show you next week, hopefully you guys are in Santa Clara for San Francisco. But normally what I would do is, it's crazy, it's short yard, it's fourth down. Everyone's screaming going nuts. I would line up with my feet parallel on top of the ball, and as I'm calling the mic point out, I would just move the ball forward too, and I would move it out so I would extend my stands from my feet. In the Fiesta Bowl, I got two off sides penalties called on Oklahoma State. Didn't help us win the game because the officials were like, they're lined up off sides, but they lined up before I got set, and so that's why they got called off sides. 00:29:26 Speaker 5: But Notre Dame busted you. 00:29:28 Speaker 9: Yeah, Notre Dames. I remember being on the team plane and we landed. I'm pretty excited. I'm captain in first class, excited. We're going a couple of days early, and Coach Shaw says, hey, Samy, I need you to stand on the plane. I gotta talk to you. And I'm nervous. What could this be? Did I flunk out of a class? I don't know what I did. He's like, Notre Dame sent and thirteen clips that you moveing. 00:29:49 Speaker 3: The ball for it. We gotta fix it. 00:29:51 Speaker 9: And Sean Hockerley made sure to yell at me every single play that game and we lost in overtime. Not that the scars are still there. 00:29:58 Speaker 2: Great stuff, Sam travels and hopefully we'll cross paths in San Francisco. 00:30:04 Speaker 9: How about going thanks stream come true? 00:30:05 Speaker 3: All right? 00:30:06 Speaker 1: Sam, Schwarzstein. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Noah Eagle handles play by play with Reggie Miller and Reggie's schedule to be a guest on The Tonight Show on Thursday with Jimmy Fallon. 00:30:37 Speaker 5: Wait really really Okay. 00:30:43 Speaker 7: I got the invite. I'm gonna show up. 00:30:46 Speaker 5: What are you gonna talk about? 00:30:48 Speaker 10: I think we are previewing and highlighting Sunday night basketball in America. You know we are going to take that time slot now now that football is into it. In Sunday night bath Goo Ball is beginning with my good friend uh in the legendary Mike Cherico and Jamal Crawford, so three man booths and starting this Sunday, the Lakers versus the next. 00:31:21 Speaker 7: In my second home. 00:31:22 Speaker 5: Is everybody going to be available to play in that game? 00:31:26 Speaker 3: Well? 00:31:27 Speaker 7: I hope so? 00:31:28 Speaker 9: Uh? 00:31:29 Speaker 7: Do you think what you mean? Because something blockbuster might? 00:31:34 Speaker 4: No? 00:31:34 Speaker 5: No, no, I'll get to that in a moment. 00:31:37 Speaker 2: I just want to make sure all hands, Like I never assume everybody's playing in a game now, it's it's unfortunate, but I hope that they do. 00:31:46 Speaker 3: They are. 00:31:47 Speaker 10: It's not unfortunate. But isn't it sad? Isn't it said that you even have to think about that? I mean, we never thought about that back in the day. I don't want to go down this route of out what we did in my day. But it's sad that fans, like yourself, because I consider you a fan of the game as well, that fans would even be like, well, who's going to be playing? 00:32:07 Speaker 7: Is everyone going to be available? 00:32:09 Speaker 10: You just didn't think about those things back in the day, when you knew if someone had a legit injury, well you knew they weren't playing. 00:32:15 Speaker 7: Yeah, but you know, when there's four games and. 00:32:18 Speaker 10: Five nights, the availabilities of some stars, I don't know if you'll get them those four games in those five nights. 00:32:25 Speaker 5: But I don't know. 00:32:26 Speaker 2: Like Giannis's injury, he's out, He's out tonight, Yeah, tonight, but like four to six weeks, is that does he play again for Milwaukee? 00:32:36 Speaker 3: Yeah? 00:32:37 Speaker 7: Look, I've been kind of scratching my head. 00:32:40 Speaker 10: If you are a Bucks fan and you live in the in the state of Wisconsin, could you have seen Giannis's last game in a Bucks uniform. I hope not, but look, there seems to be riding down the wall. He's open to being traded again. He has not come out and said I want to be traded, but you hear the from the Buck side now that it may be beneficial from their end as well to clear the books and close this chapter. Again, we don't know. This is all talk. This is all people just throwing out ideas and you know, coming up with rumors and so forth. 00:33:25 Speaker 7: But we know he won't be playing tonight. 00:33:28 Speaker 10: What we do believe because Joelle and Paul George didn't play and that's thrilling loss last night for the Sixers versus the Hornets at one point down. 00:33:42 Speaker 7: Fifty at the end of three. I believe we will have Joel and Paul George in attendance tonight. 00:33:52 Speaker 10: Wha, but they got to make up the difference versus this under manned Milwaukee team. 00:33:59 Speaker 2: We've been talking lot of analytics related to the Broncos loss, and I'm curious when analytics came in to the NBA. 00:34:10 Speaker 3: I'd believe. 00:34:12 Speaker 7: Early to mid two thousands. 00:34:15 Speaker 10: I think right as I was basically retiring, I think people started to look at the stats more three versus two. That's when you started to get threes, free throws and layups, and the mid range game kind of started to become a little bit more obsolete, and you started to play more in space and pace. So I would say around two thousand and five, six seven, and then it just kind of took off from. 00:34:46 Speaker 2: There because you don't have to encourage somebody to take a three now, whereas when you were playing, you know, if somebody took three threes in a game or four, that felt like a lot. Now you might do that in the first quarter. 00:35:01 Speaker 7: A funny question. 00:35:03 Speaker 10: Hall of Fame coach arguably one of the best coaches I ever played for in Larry Brown. 00:35:10 Speaker 7: He used to look at me crazy when I was. 00:35:12 Speaker 10: Taking five to seven threes during that run from ninety four to when he left, I believe in ninety seven ninety eight, like he jumped all on me because I was taking threes. 00:35:26 Speaker 7: I mean, he was like living. 00:35:29 Speaker 10: I just wonder what he would think about in today's games, where I mean and it's not so much to me, it's who's taking three. Yes, I mean, you've got sinners power. Everyone's taking threes. It just is not the point guard or the shooting guards. It's I mean, assistant coaches are taking threes now from the bench. 00:35:51 Speaker 2: I go back to Rick Batino at Providence when Billy Donovan was one of his players. Rick is one of the first coaches who ever embrace the three because he had a small lineup and he shot the three. And then I go back to Paul West had at Loyla Marymount. They were going to run you and they'll give you your two, but they're gonna come down and shoot the three. Like these are two legendary moments coaching moments in history and how they've affected the game. 00:36:22 Speaker 10: I think we also have to throw Don Nelson in there as well. 00:36:26 Speaker 7: Run TMC. 00:36:27 Speaker 10: They were kind of ahead of their schedule with Chris Malin, Mitch Richmond, Tim Hardaway, Sharunas Marcellonis. 00:36:35 Speaker 2: And also he didn't have to have a big man either. He was the first coach who said, I don't need to have six' eleven seven. Footer my center can be six to. 00:36:44 Speaker 10: Seven and they played small and they tried to run you off the, Court they tried to outscore, you and they. DIDN'T i, mean they had some, success but not great. Success AND i don't think that really caught on in the. Nineties but boy has to come full circle now when you look back at Those nelly teams and how they, performed and think about the success you know those teams had back in The Bay area as well when they upset When dallas was the number one seed With dirk and all, that and you Had Baron, Davis Stephen, Jackson Matty. 00:37:22 Speaker 7: Barnes those teams came full. 00:37:24 Speaker 2: Circle Reggie miller on the call tonight at eight. Eastern it'll be The bucks visiting the seventy six. 00:37:31 Speaker 5: Ers mac. McClung no slam dunk. Contest why no four pt? 00:37:37 Speaker 7: Right that would be a four. 00:37:38 Speaker 5: Peak what is holding up his? Schedule maybe he turned it. 00:37:44 Speaker 2: Down, Well i'd get a guess that he, Did BUT i, mean that's what you're known, for. 00:37:51 Speaker 7: Three time, winner was looking for a four. Peat, yeah maybe he turned it. 00:37:57 Speaker 10: Down, look there's only so many dunks human being can possibly. Do AND i give him credit because he's saved the dunk contest the last few years and if you're not gonna have big. Names thank, God matt he brought the, funk as we call, it because he saved the dunk. 00:38:16 Speaker 7: Contest but, again you AND i have been down this. 00:38:19 Speaker 10: ROAD i think the three point competition has surpassed him BECAUSE i, mean everyone's counting in the. 00:38:28 Speaker 7: Arena you just don't. 00:38:29 Speaker 10: Know in the dunk, contest if a guy's going to make a, dunk how many attempts he. Gets the luster comes off when he misses his first. Dunk at least in the three point, competition it's make or, miss and you know the. 00:38:43 Speaker 2: Number why can't we do The and we've discussed this that we have the old and the new in a three point shooting contest where you Have Del curry And Steph. Curry you, know you could be there With Klay, thompson you And halliburton if he was. Healthy BUT i, mean it'd be kind of fun to embrace the past and the president in a three point shooting. 00:39:09 Speaker 5: CONTEXT i would be. 00:39:10 Speaker 7: On board with that. 00:39:11 Speaker 10: THAT i, mean obviously us old timers would have to have some type of, handicap. 00:39:18 Speaker 7: But let the current day, players you, know do the bigger. 00:39:22 Speaker 10: Role BUT i would be on board of that because the last thing to ever, leave because you could get Are Craig hodges who can still, Shoot peijarstoyokovic who can still, Shoot Mark price who can still, shoot The Steve kerr can still. SHOOT i mean it would be cool to kind of see some of these old timers and you pair them with the modern day three point gun. 00:39:46 Speaker 2: Slingers BUT i give you one, rack reg like the old, guys only have to do one, Rack so you get to pick your. Spot you, Know padjus will be at the top of the. Key you might be in the, Corner Steve kerr at the top of the, Key peijia on the, wing and you you just stand by you. 00:40:03 Speaker 7: We do we just do one. Rock you don't even have to. Move, No, oh, man sign me. Up what do you, Think, oh sign me? UP i would do that in a. 00:40:12 Speaker 10: Heartbeat, yes, yes. 00:40:15 Speaker 2: Yes Garrick grose got his jersey. Retired uh is he going to The hall Of? 00:40:19 Speaker 10: FAME i would be surprised if he. Doesn't he will be the ONLY mvp not to be in The hall Of. 00:40:28 Speaker 5: Fame, man if he didn't give me a. 00:40:30 Speaker 10: First, BALLOT i doubt he'll be first. Ballot but he'll get in at some, point but for a six to eight year stretch he Was him And lebron were battling for who was the best player in the game and the YOUNGEST. MVP i would be surprised at some point he's going to get. In all MVPs get. 00:40:52 Speaker 5: In, man he was a. 00:40:54 Speaker 10: Thing He i've said this on numerous occasions WHEN i first arted on this side of the isle and calling, GAMES i would. PAY i WOULD i would have paid to watch him. Play he was so electrifying and his demeanor because he wasn't one of those cocky kind of, guys but he exuded confidence and it just permeated because, he you, know he let the other guys Because Joe King noah was the guy who was like cocky and flash he doing all the, talking And loue All dan, was you, know, quiet kind of like D rose coach stiffs just had those. Guys oh, MAN i would have paid money to Watch Derek. 00:41:43 Speaker 3: Rose. See he was that. 00:41:44 Speaker 5: Electrified but and it's weird to say this. 00:41:48 Speaker 2: That he may mean more To chicago because he was local Than Michael. Jordan Like jordan gave you the, titles gave me all of, That But Derek rose local one of your own and becoming a LEAGUE mvp and you, know A hall Of famer born. 00:42:05 Speaker 7: And bred at some. 00:42:08 Speaker 10: Point that's Why lebron was so loved and then became so hated because he was born in bred In, ohio played high school and was obviously drafted by, them and then they felt betrayal when you know he left and took his talents To South, beach but made up. 00:42:28 Speaker 7: For it by coming back and winning. 00:42:30 Speaker 10: Them you, know they're only, championships so you're right when in terms of pecking, order, Yes Michael, jordan he has all the, accolades. Fantastic but to, me the two PEOPLE i will always think about In chicago number One. 00:42:46 Speaker 7: Derrick Rose Isaiah thomas. 00:42:48 Speaker 10: TOO i mean when you think Of chicago, basketball a lot of times his. 00:42:56 Speaker 7: Name doesn't get. 00:42:57 Speaker 10: Mentioned isaiah needs to be mentioned as one of the Great chicago athletes of all. 00:43:03 Speaker 2: Time are The lakers a? Threat, like what's the threat level for them right? Now without making any? 00:43:10 Speaker 10: Moves, WELL i think everyone's holding their cards right now because they want to see what's going to happen With giannis and what's going to happen With John moran and some of These Anthony. Davis you, know these are names that everyone assumes or are going to be. Traded SO i think The lakers are kind of keeping their cards close to the. 00:43:30 Speaker 7: Vests are the a? 00:43:31 Speaker 10: THREAT i, mean When luca's gonna be put up forty six a, night, yeah they'll always have a puncher's. Chance if this was a heavyweight, fight, yes they will always have a puncher's chance because of this playmaking and the scoring Of luca and having one of the all time greats In lebron on your. 00:43:50 Speaker 7: Team so there's your puncher's. 00:43:51 Speaker 10: Chance the problem is when you get locked into a, series things start to get taken away and things start to get. Exposed that's where they're going to run into. 00:44:01 Speaker 2: Problems you, Know Rich paul doing his podcast With Max kellerman and then, Says, hey If i'm running The, LAKERS i Trade Austin reeves AND i try to Get Jaron Jackson. Junior you can't say that without us reading Into you have to have had this conversation with your, Client Lebron james. 00:44:23 Speaker 10: Correct, yes, yeah AND i, Look lebron has come out and said all the right things that he doesn't speak for, me and that's his he's saying all the right. 00:44:32 Speaker 7: Things but, look they're. Boys that's my. Agent we've, yes they've had this conversation. Before but if you're Rich, paul you can't do it. 00:44:40 Speaker 10: Because NOW i, look If i'm ar And i'm looking at, It i'm looking At lebron, like, really this is how this is how you think of? 00:44:50 Speaker 9: Me you? 00:44:50 Speaker 10: Know, So i'm sure he's taking this time coming back. Too having known what he. Said NOW i know he's supposed to play on This Hopefully i'll play in That sunday Night Sunday night. Game that would be great for him to make his. Debut but if you're Rich, paul you can't do. It you can't say. 00:45:09 Speaker 5: That nick's gonna Trade Karl Anthony. 00:45:12 Speaker 7: TOWNS i don't think. 00:45:18 Speaker 5: So would you trade? 00:45:19 Speaker 7: Him depends on What i'm getting. 00:45:22 Speaker 10: BACK i wouldn't because the way the game is played, today you've got to have bigs that stretched the, floor check, rebound, check he averages a double. Double he's just got him And Mike, Brown Jalen. Brunson they've got to figure this. Out and this is no fault TO. Jb, brunson BUT i think he Asked he's gonna probably have to bring help bring catalong here because it's just to night and day from what we saw just a year, ago twenty four and Thirteen ALL Nba All star and then just the. Struggles he's happy this year is just is mind, blowing AND i Think brusson is going to have to help bring him. 00:46:07 Speaker 5: Along have fun. Tonight good to talk to, you a bud. 00:46:10 Speaker 10: Him it's always a pleasure to talk to. You theodore and my darn.
