Mmm. Hello, It's Tuesday February in the seventeen twenty and fifteen and you
were listening to the Giant Bomb Cast. I'm your host, Brad Shoemaker,
fresh off of honoring our fine nations presidents. Uh. The only way I
know how how was that, which is by not leaving the house and playing
video games. Work. Nice work. Jeff Gersman, Hello, have you
put away your collection of powdered wigs? Yeah? I did. We set
them on fire this year that you know, like every what was it every
eight years you have to burn this and get new wigs to retire them a
little, a little piro in your President's Day celebration. Yeah, so this
was I heared out to be our burn year. So weakened the whigs.
Next year, new wigs. Yeah, observing custom, Washington brewed his own
beer and burned his own wigs. Yes. Uh. Drew Scanlin, have
you drafted any articles of Confederacy recently? I have not. Uh, and
uh there's a lot out there that he's fixing. So you know I did
draft. I did draft a joystick diagram this weekend. Okay, well,
that's that's the next best thing. I think that that's that's going that's going
into the Constitution. Okay, Article Amendment two amendments. Uh, eighty nine,
Dan, right, because that world Rod too. Yeah, is there
eighty eight amendments? That's not right. No, it's definitely not not that
many. That was inflated for comedic value. Okay, I got it.
Yeah, okay, man, he said eighty nine. But really they're like
twelve twenties prohibition was yeah, oh yeah, yeah, we should know that
danger. Hey there, explain to me the concept of checks and balances in
the context of the US federal government. So one of the three branches of
Congress rights checks that say things that they want to do on them, and
they got to pass it around the room until everyone mix sure that all the
wording is fair and balanced. That's m that's where that term comes from,
basically how I understand. So yeah, yeah, yeah, so that's how
I understand it. So yeah, okay, yeah, sure that works out.
No, the bills, it stands on Capitol Hill and sings the little
song and well and that's what the justice like the thing from the Metallica album
cover. That's why she's got scales. She has to put the check in
one side. That's why it's unbalanced because the check isn't in there right right,
and then and then the country works. They have to move checks from
one side to the other until the scale is exactly balanced. We all know
what's going. All of those things become laws. And the Metallic Metadical album,
Uh no, I don't think that that's a really good album. Fell
Oh yeah, okay, all albums great. Okay, dude, that just
like almost thirty years ago. Oh yeah, yeah, really good album,
though. I think they're done putting out good albums. That's Magnetic was really
good whatever, not with the way it was Mastard couldn't tell you. Fucking
the race to the loud, the loudness race death. Magnetic is a pox
on modern society. They should recall it. I download my unmastered take that
I stole from Guitar Hero. I like this new character a lot. Was
that actually that actually happened? Right? That did actual? Like the cuts?
The cut and Guitar Hero actually was like more more dynamic, right than
I think? Well, I think super compressed album version. The way it
ends up is because games like Guitar Hero and and the Rock Band have to
work with stems of the song, right, so they're basically abling people that
are nefarious and shady who like to steal things out of video games, or
just cool people that would do cool shit with stuff to get at those things
and then mix it at they see fit. But also like the developers of
those games are doing their own mix right, Yeah, I didn't even think
about that. Yeah. Yeah. And so they're not bound to whatever whatever
whatever shackles were placed on the song Clears Revenge. In the prison that is
the studio, they don't have any checks or balances there. Nope, no,
that's for sure. No, they have assert it lawlessness. No one
in the certification process gives a fuck if it is redlined or not. Yeah,
it's just the way. It's basically the wild West in the recording studio.
Does it crash, No, sure, all right, it's in.
Maybe they might this popa roach song. Yeah, it's in gross. No
thank you, hey man, you gotta take the go with the band.
No thank you? Makes this country great? Is that, everyone's got to
say. Even Tony Hawk had a pop popa roach song. And two,
anyone can start a band. You can start one right now. You can
start too. You guys want to be in a band yes, okay,
we're in a band. All right, great, awesome, We're an awesome
band. It's called Guns and Roses two. Yeah, yeah, Roman Numeral
or we're going to marriage de alright class Guns and Roses too. A friend
of mine was actually in a friend of mine was in a band called Nirvana.
To you the sequel for a while. Oh man, all right,
every band you apply that too, it's gonna get progressively less funny. But
yeah, totally, yep, it's really good. Uh did you live?
Oh god, did you spend your three day weekend listening to Papa Roach?
Jeff? Of course? Yeah. I mean it's just like p roaches on
all the time. Jacoby shattucks. That's good, Kobe. I don't know.
It's fairy tipped to just hit stop after Guns and Roses too. I
just told know how it's gonna get me better than that. What did you
do this weekend? We got three days off, seventy two hours. I
don't know. I hung out, I did some stuff. It was Valentine's
Day. That was cool. It was that went out and had dinner and
and that was an experience. Yeah, kind of dinner, so fancy dinner.
It's hard to find so I you know, it's I wanted to go
to a restaurant and you look at the menu online and go like, this
looks like a cool place. Then you get there and they're like, here's
our Valentine's Day menu, because fuck you right, like, here's what we're
making tonight. There's a zillion people coming through exactly, yeah, and I
totally understand why this should do that. But when I made the reservation,
they did not have their Valentine's Day men you posted and that was a little
yeah basically, so you walk in there and they're like, you want some
apples and some vodka? Like not really, but I mean what else do
you have? What if you put the apples in the vodka? Yeah?
Sure, I mean whatever you need to do to get through. So it
was a rude surprise. I mean, you got there, it was it
was unfortunate, you know, fix them in you Yeah, well no,
it was not like prefixed like pay this and choose one of two things.
But it was like they had eight things instead of twenty. And it turns
out the stuff that they cut where all the stuff that we would have wanted
to eat. So whatever, whatever, not that big of a deal.
And the grand scheme of things I eat every day. Yes, as it
turns out, so when one when one food experience goes bad, there are
plenty of always more for the following day. Your your body has been nourished,
and you've moved on with your life. Yeah, to what I've moved
on to? Debt or Alive five Last Last Round? Yeah, that just
shut up in mail? That did I put that in? So that's actually
that's the retail version of a free to play a game or a free download
that will be going up today or has not gone up yet or is up
soon or whatever. That's called Debt or Alive five Last Round Core Fighters.
How many colons are in that title too? I think I don't know,
but I want to say that's free on PS four and you might have to
pay a fee to play it on the Xbox One. I don't know what
the fuck happened there. But it's like a four character version of the game
if you get it that way, and then you can go pay four bucks
to add characters to the game. And so does the retail one just come
with everything? Yeah, the retail is just everything. So it was if
you want to buy the story mode for your free version. You can give
them thirteen dollars or whatever they like. It's they've split it all up piecemeal
in really weird ways that assume that you want any of that. Batier Japanese
fighting games not really the area that I expected to expand into free to play,
and yet it seems to be happening. Well, I mean just I
mean, I think I think you're being a little rough when you say B
tier. Come on, considering techn is a free to play fighting game,
or or there was a free to play Techen. If you want to tell
me the Soul Caliber is a B tier fighting game, I agree with you.
What what I've got some bad news about teen? Okay, go on,
uh, I don't think it rates anymore. You might be right,
I mean, Technic is really good, but like I'm I'm okay, so
Caliber. Let's let's get this out of the way. Yeah, Soul Caliber
one's an amazing game. Then they made like nine more and they're all sucking
lame. Five wasn't terrible, Okay, one is the best one way?
Hang on? They made a five? Oh yeah, yeah, but the
one after the Star Wars one it was all Yoda waiting. No, it
was Yoda and Yoda there's really Yeah, there's soul caliber after the one with
the Star Wars characters, yea and the completely forgot it's better than four,
it's better than four. It's uh, I think one, three and five,
But like no one cares about soul caliber and instead I care about So
that's okay, Yes, I care. I will look forward to your performance
at EVO. U. Techn is infinitely more important than soul. I'm with
you. I'm with you. That's that's with you on that. Uh.
But Tech and Techen's well, I was about to say Techen's best days are
behind it, but I don't know if I want to go that far.
I don't know. I was always want to see Tech and seven it's it's
coming out in Japan pretty soon. Here in Arcades, there's always room for
a new technic game to be great, and I have I have loved techn
at one point in my life, but it's been a lot. I think
techn is so setting is what it's ways at this point that like, yeah,
I mean there's only so much they can do, That's what I mean.
Like I like techn Yeah, did like said, did you like Tech
and Tech Tournament too? I thought that was really good. It was okay,
Yeah, that was fine. I thought it was one of the better
ones in recent years. Yeah, I thought that Teking five and six were
we're okay too, you know, like that stuff's all right, It's just
it's not grabbing me the same way one through three did. Uh, you
know obviously, because that's when it was new, when you were like,
fucking this is insane. Yeah, would you take a new techn over a
new Soul Caliber. Oh, I'm not interested in a new Soul Caliber game.
They they shot their wad, They're done. The thing's done. Man.
It still flows so much smoother than Tech. I mean, I love
like all the characters they added. It's just like weird jokes and they added
all their creative fighter stuff that I think is pointless and like it's just not
It's it like as someone who has played a lot of fighting games for a
lot of years and taking some of them seriously, Like that was never a
game I took seriously. Soul Caliber won the Dreamcast might as well have been
a party game because it was so accessible that anyone could pick it up and
enjoy it. I think that's why I liked it, because I've always liked
fighting games, but I've never been like an EVO type guy. But with
soul Caliber, I felt like you could just pick up a controller and match
buttons and Max he's can do yeah, or you could learn and like,
Okay, I'm gonna learn every stance and it's a rugie and every single move
and go through all the tutorials and stuff. Like I thought it was great,
super cool shit in that game. Yeah, And soul Caliber on I
mean, soul Caliber on the Dreamcast is like lightning in a bottle, Like
it's fucking insane, like going top to bottom all the stuff they added to
it, like it's it's Namco at the top of their fucking game. Going
going to my friend's house the night the Dreamcast came out, when he brought
it home and hooked up and played. So that was like a defined that's
like a top ten defining moment in video games type of thing. But there's
a added line relationship between saul Caliber and Golden Eye. Oh what's that where
it has that kind of thing where it's like it was that dorm room game
and it was like people that had no interest in fighting games were like,
oh yeah, we played a ton of it, and like they're still weirdly
all right at Soul Caliber in this really insane way, and you're like,
what is really And they never went on to play much of anything else in
the genre. It's no button masher. They're like, if you know what
you're doing in Soul no one should be able to beat. There's absolute skill
involved. Yeah I'm not. I'm not discounting any of the fighting systems and
all that sort of stuff. I just think as they tacked on stuff over
the years, they got further and further away from the things that made that
game great. I would actually still rather play Soul Edge than anything than Soul
Caliber two on. I go back to that thing, and I fully agree
with everything past one being a shadow of totally. Like they're actually in the
history of video games. There's no game I've played more than the first Soul
Caliber. I bet yeah. I played these. I played for like four
years. I played it nightly, like it was a dorm thing. It
was in the high school. It. See. That's why I'm saying that.
That's why I say there's that dotted line to Golden Eye, because Golden
Eye was very much that dorm thing for a lot of people like you.
You hear from people that don't play video games at all now and depending on
their age, obviously the yeah, oh yeah, but I used to play
Golden Eye back in the day. I used to play Soul Caliber all the
time. Like it's the exact same sentence, exact same tone of voice.
Oh yeah, bro, that exact I think maybe now, maybe probably these
days, I don't I'm not hanging out on college campuses as much as maybe
I used to. So I can't tell you why not. I just don't.
I'm not in a band anymore. I might be able to help you
with that, really, Yeah, all right, talk later, Okay,
I'll get on yack yack. That's where they all hang out. I'll tell
you what staircases they're getting high near. It's a it's a low k okay,
all right, ya yack. It's a location based a bulletin board,
so you load up your phone. It will give you everything people have posted
to the service within a certain radius of you, GEO locating you where you
are right now, where you are right now. So like right now,
I can't post on the same I can't post to the same people that see
things when I post from home because I'm not home. Okay. So you
could travel to a new city, say San Antonio, and say where are
the cool places to eat? And then the people that use yik yak because
they're all assholes respond like your mother, and you go like, this is
a great service. This is really very informed the human condition. I'm downloading
it right now. Are they the ones that told us to go to that
bar? For now? No? That was that was? It was a
courtney. One of our moderators say, she mentioned it by name, and
then maybe I misinterpreted the name and by the time we ended up there it
was not she said it was. She said, there's this place and they
have fancy old sodas and candy, and I really wanted to go, and
it was in this mall, and she said the name of a place that
I'm pretty sure it was the same as the name of the place we went
to, but that's not what it was. So something got awesome translation or
there are two places with the same name, and we were there at night,
so they weren't. There was just a box, no fucking idea.
Okay, I remember having a good time. You don't remember anything stops for
getting some great photos Yeah, some fantastic photos I loaded up ye yak for
where we're at right now. Yeah, So it's it's big on colleges for
people to talk about how high they are. Basically, it's like people going
like I'm in this class right now, but I'm so stoned, and then
you could post replies to people and it's all anonymous. My boyfriend is my
best friend. Do guys get bored when that happens? This Tuesday is Monday
as fuck college bars. Any good spots at presidio for me to smoke my
bong with two g's boy. Yeah, yeah, I gotta go in to
download this app right now. Yeah, it's excuse me, it's pretty great.
So I'm yeah, what were we talking about? The youth man,
the kids man there yak and getting high and Saul caliber so Saul calibers whatever,
and techn could again be great. I think it is. I'm at.
I don't I disagree. I think that, you know, like as
of as a series gets further and further locked into its ways, like,
you know, the best techn can you hope to do is to continue to
appease the base of tech and things and maybe bring back some people that have
elapsed and and but but at the same time, like techn is still gonna
be techn that you know, it's still gonna be a four button system.
It's still gonna be like, you know, you can't get too far away
from that because at some point you're no longer making techn And I think that
that's I wish. I don't know, I don't know what I wish,
but like Mortal Kombat is really the only franchise that is like totally said fuck
it and thrown away everything multiple times. Yeah, for the for was it,
five, six, and seven, for those three games on on PS
two and Xbox and GameCube, it was all three D spaces and stans changes
and all the stans is all a crazy shit. I think that would end
a fight in the middle of the thing, like kicking someone into some Grand
Gear ship. Yeah, sure, yeah, it was stuff that was like
I don't know, at the time, I remember we're thinking, like this
is really amazing that like all these systems seemed really well thought out. And
yes, when you're standing here, the red light turns on on the on
the UI and you know you can kick him it. But in practice,
like those games were not especially fun, so when they threw it all out
for MK versus DC and then hone to that for MK nine. Like that
was that was where that series got got great again. Sure, what's the
kind of the tournament scene stance on tech and these ideas tech and even show
up at EVO in a substantive way? Yeah, I think it. I
think it absolutely does. Like like you don't hear much about. I mean
we could go look at the EVO homepage. They have a list of games
posted already. Yeah, that things in July again, Yeah, always what
do they gus? What do they play? What techn do they play?
Because street Fighter Cross well that's yeah, no, I mean they might play
that technically a street fighter game. Yeah, I think it's more of a
street it's a thing. I mean yeah, it is a little more street
fighter E than TECHNI But isn't that the most recent techn that came out Well
it's not a tech tech all right, what's the most recent technic game that
came out tech? Probably? Yeah, yeah, I think so. But
let's look at the list here of games that are going to be at EVO.
That' be teckn Tag Tournament two. Yes, seven is a way is
off right? Seven is out in arcades like what right this month in Japan?
Sh Yeah, there's like one arcade getting at the end of this month
and then the full rollouts in March. I guess is how it's gonna go.
Okay, So here's the list according to the logos on here. Ultra
Street Fighter four, Super Smash Brothers for we U, Killer Instinct Ultimate,
Marvel Versus Capcom three, Guilty Gears, Exert Sign, Mortal Kombat X,
Super Smash Brothers, Malay Uh, Persona four Arena h Ultimax, and Tech
and seven. Okay, so they'll they'll play in Tech and seven there even
even being the new Tech and still at the very end of that list and
the Mind Game. Yes, yeah, there's way setive. You just you
just reminded me that I forgot to buy Guilty Gears on that flash sale this
weekend. What was it like twenty five or so? Like twenty four dollars?
I think I finally bought the Jackbox Party pack ten bucks. Yeah,
pretty good deal. Yeah, that seemed like the right price as someone who
never has enough people around to play that game. I figured this was the
right amount to pay for something that I will never actually have. Ten dollars
is a good what if price? Yeah, like what if I need if
I need this, Yeah, but I'll have it. That is exactly.
It was a speculative purchase. It's a DA whatever whatever based on DA five
then yeah, character and like more swimsuits and running on PS four Xbox one
not I've not seen much volleyball, but there's one level where a bunch of
pumpkins fall down the stairs little balls. Okay, I don't know the fus
going on in that thing. I got sad while I was playing it.
I actually think it's like a pretty good game. Just DA five in general
is a good game, alright, you know, like DA has always been
kind of okay. Once you if you you know, once you get past
this kind of skivier nature of it, you're like, no, whatever this,
you know that stuff's dumb. But it's still a pretty decent fighting game.
But I got sad because I started worrying that this might be the last
time I get to play as virtual fighter characters in a modern game. Sarah
and Akira and Jackie are in it. But why would this be the last?
Because is Sega ever gonna make a new fucking VF How many versions of
five have they put out. They put out quite a few, at least
three. I want to say, yeah, yeah, well there was was
a five VO and then five final tuned. Is that what was final tuned
was the last one? Which one was the like kind of stripped down downalytable
version, remember that? Yes, yeah, they did that. I think
that that was final tuned. I want to say that was the one where
it's like, Okay, this version with these balance changes and updates is not
available anywhere else. It was like an XL The only way we can get
it out is there is an xbla thing and we'll put it out that way.
And you just wonder with like, you know, the way Sega's focus
keeps changing and going further and further into digital things and not physical things,
like you know, it seems like it would be expensive to make a new
virtual fighter and do it in arcades the way that they need to for the
Japanese market to matter. And yeah, like the they even have the people
that you would want to do a new VS. I mean VF five was
amazing, you know, it was a great what it was. Yeah,
so I don't really know what the status stuff. Cut tons of staff since
then, they have, but I don't know how much those cuts were in
Japan. You know, it's like they cut the US staff these days.
He's not at Sega, hasn't for a while. Did even work on five,
I think so, I don't know. They might have brought him into
look at it and go like, yeah, that's totally yeah. No three
buttons, good going, not four smart that's all you need. Yeah,
that's how you make a VF game. Yeah yeah, so yeah, so
I got kind of bummed out, but then whatever, I'm still I'm looking
forward to playing some more of this for at least a little while. Yeah,
I might download it too. If it's yeah, like those characters are
like the four. It's like it's like hoyabusa, ya, it's Tomi and
all right. I don't know, but I almost think I know who those
characters. Sure, yeah, I take care. Yeah, I forget which
four they are, but yeah, it's it's four characters that you look at
and go like, yeah, that's probably those are probably the main characters from
DA Sure, yeah, I don't know. It seems all right. It's
weird the disc and manual are both covered and like like the printing on them
is like this like beaded up the water. So it's like the disc just
looks wet, and you're like, what the fuck are you doing? This
is disgusted. When you opened it and said that, I thought you meant
that the disc was literally wet, like when I got sent to you in
the mail, and that sounded way grocer. No, that would be way
grosser. But you mean the video game wet? That would be yeah,
yeah, fucking disgusting. Just just apply water like Handy included water packet.
Yeah, it's sprints, sprinkles, WWF. Sweat is included in this package.
Maximum sweat. Uh yeah, wait two we two eighty three this year
and that's coming right, we will see that's the stay tuned for. Yeah,
it's all It's just a ninety minute thing where they're like, we've got
it right. Here's wet too. Yeah. Finally, Jeff, I want
you to tell me about the order. We'll talk about it next week.
I know, I'm just saying I want you to tell me about it,
man, But it's not coming out to Friday, which I didn't realize until
that's a weird day. Yeah, and the last day or two we'll have
a quick look up on the site later this week. I thought it was
a Tuesday release. Questions answer, it's not the first Sony first party Friday
release, right since the PS four came out. Weren't they did toying with
that here and there? Famous was a weird day, wasn't it. Yeah?
I feel like there's because and the same deal, Like there was a
bunch of infamous stuff out like way ahead of time. Yes, because copies
got out. Yes. Yeah, we were talking earlier and you were surmising
that even with a Friday release, the copies are probably getting too stores on
the schedule that they would for a Tuesday release. Seems like it would because
because there are gonna have separate trucks, right, uh go to distribution where
I I don't know, and you can't get all that. You couldn't.
You couldn't. You couldn't schedule it for the following week's delivery because it might
not get there in time. Yeah, but sure enough, there are lots
of people streaming and posting videos of the order. Yeah, I guess what
happened. Someone posted the full game. I think there's like multiple playthroughs out
there now. Yeah, it's like there's in fact, there's a guy posting
a play through, like getting all collectibles and stuff, so if you will
see every pixel that there is to see of the order, which is nice
because it's out. There are fewer pixels to look at the games because it's
all letter box. Yes, cut all that stuff out anyway, quick look
and review forthcoming. We can't discuss it here though, Uh there's anything else?
Uh no, that's that's pretty much shit. I doubt. I don't
know why. I don't know what. Hath the fuck? I download a
DC Universe online. Oh yeah, you mentioned that, thinking like I was
gonna play it, and I was like, no, I'm not gonna.
They put out a bunch of stuff. They put out another piece of like
another so they it's it's free to play it. But they put out their
DALC for like ten bucks a pop, and you get access to these you
know, mission whatever these missions are and stuff, so that that it's showing
up back in the news. Maybe go like, oh maybe I'll take a
look at this. And I downloaded it and haven't actually run it or anything
like that. I played some super Stardust, Yes that's the same game.
Yep, So it seems I don't know who, like, who's who are
they trying to trick? Yeah, one, well, I guess it's not
available on PS four, so why not? That's the thing. I mean,
it's like, it's nice, it's it's here on PS four. Yeah.
This is the first Superstar Dust for PS four. Oh you said it's
not available on PS yeah, because it came out until it was as three
launch game. Yeah, I got it. Okay, so I got the
one hand from a sort of added some modes. I mean it's yeah,
it's got like exactly the same game, but it is the sort of thing
where you're like this this could literally be the same boss fight and I don't
even remember, you know, form like a preservationist kind of perspective, like
it's nice to have it running on more platforms, but at the same time,
like would it have been hard to just make a new Superstar Dust game.
Maybe? I don't know, Like what is superstart us to this point?
Like, you know, they stuck to the tenets of it the same
way, like if they when they departed too far from what Geometry Wars was,
it actually made for a lesser game. Yeah, I don't know.
I like Geometry Wars three, it's not as good. Yeah, that's then
you are literally agreeing with what I just said. But it's not bad,
like in its own right, it's pretty good. Yeah, like what we
were saying when it came out, you know, like if this game there's
any different name on it and Geometry Wars didn't exist or whatever, like you
think it was pretty good. I enjoyed it for a full three days and
intend to never play it again. Did you do the like single player adventure
mode thing at all? I started doing it. I kind of like that,
kind of got to a point where I'm like, I'm good. I
mostly like that thing. Yeah. A few of the levels had some issues,
but I mean it was really challenging. YEA like that. Yes,
it's quite tough. Some of the level shapes not so great. Yeah,
the ones where you can't really tell what's around the bend pretty rough. Yes,
Yeah, some of use do givable and that's I don't like the boss
fights. I don't like this structure of like, ye, keep it alive
for as long as you kind of can, because you need to milk as
many points out of it as possible like that. I don't know that weird
kind of a backwards built sort of thing. Sure, that didn't really,
I didn't really do it for me anything else. No, man, no,
keep it a casgy this weekend? Yeah all right, what casgy cash?
Hell of cash. I think people actually say I kept it cash.
I'm sure he would be proud. Uh, Dan, Yes, what'd you
get up to this weekend? I kept real busy. Yeah, yeah,
just the usual running, writing and drinking stuff like that. Played some games,
okay, Uh, Mainly I focused on Grow Home after hearing about it
last week my gambit worked it. You I heard it up on UPF.
I was just like, fuckers, play this game. I downloaded it.
Yeah, all right, you're getting there. It wasn't a hard sell at
all for me, Like I love games like that, and it was just
kind of a perfect game to play through it, or the five hours or
so I played over the weekend. Yeah, I just love how how kind
of stripped down it was. It's it's just at its core a platformer with
an interesting, unique control thing, and then it actually does a good job
of being kind of nerve racking, like if you haven't activated the teleporter,
where you're really high us and you're like trying to crawl out on this thing
and like stretch out this little vine thing. It's terrifying because if you fall,
like there's real consequences, Like I gotta climb all the way o,
it's like another five minutes to climb all the way up there again. Yeah,
and trying to gauge stuff like I wonder if my jet pack has enough
power my jet pack plus my flower that's half done or whatever, if I
can actually get over there. Yeah. I had a great time with it.
You do find yourself pulling a lot of desperate maneuvers, like if you
miss a jump, You're like, oh, what can I grab on the
way down to try to minimize the damage here. Yeah, And it can
get funky sometimes, like when I was climbing on the vine, sometimes the
camera would get really weird. Is the worst thing about that game. It
can be kind of spotty, whereas like the movement is goofy, but it
feels intentionally so and and you get used to it. But yeah, I
like the character. I love the look of the world. I think it's
great. Yea, yeah, yeah, it's fantastic. Look did you do
what you got all the crystals? Right? Did you do all the other
thing that? Like, oh yeah, when you get to your ship.
Okay, yeah, okay, yeah, I made sure to do all the
crystals before the other thing you do at the end, because the blast unlock
you get with all the hundred crystal makes it like it basically trivializes the rest
of the stuff you have to do. Did you get alle hundred crystals?
No? I meant like early eighties right now, I think, Yeah,
is getting the crystals what unlocks your abilities? Yeah, so like at ten,
twenty forty sixteen, one hundred do you unlock new things? Which a
lot of them are upgrades for your jet pack, you know, things like
that, which helps a lot. If you've not seen the game, we
have quick quick look of it. But if you haven't seen it, it's
eager basically growing a giant bean stock basically your space ship. Yeah. You
have to plug in vines that are shooting off the bean stock into these like
energy islands, and like the first one will be like plug in four and
then plug in eight or something, and then each time you hit that,
the like core vine gets closer to the spaceship. Okay, along the way,
there are crystals to collect. Yeah, yeah, we talked about it
a bunch last week. Yeah, it's it's funny, like it's it's really
cool when like, you know, you're looking for crystals and then you just
stumble like accidentally, like the ground will collapse, and then you're in this
cave and you look around there, Oh, there's like five crystals in here.
This get these amount of stuff to discover in that game, Like they
do a good job of tucking things away. Yeah, yeah, no,
just I love the whole thing of that game is that no one knew about
it, and all of a sudden it's like, oh this is out and
it's like, oh, this is cheap and really cool. Yeah. It
kind of made me wish there was more of it, you know. Yeah,
yeah, happily played more of that thing. Yeah, I hope it
sells well because I mean it really seems like a cool passion project for the
guys that made that. Totally you'd be suffering, uh yeah reflections. Yeah.
Outside of that, played a couple more rounds of Evolve. I think,
oh, yes, yes, we need to talk about Evolved. Yes,
I also have played some Evolved. I've just forgot about. I too
have played a fair amount of Evolve. Yeah continue, Oh you know,
I've yet to do outside of the Quick Look we did. I've yet to
do one where I just like staffed the room full of friends that are playing
it or whatever. I've only done strangers. Yeah, same here so far.
Uh yeah, And you know what, I I think for the way
I've been playing it to where it's like if I just have like thirty minutes
to kill and yeah, I'll just load one up real quick, and I
don't see if I get the monster or whatever, I play one level up
a class or something. Does it mean you only want to play the Monster?
No? No, actually, uh yeah, It's been my first choice,
probably more than anything I'm hitting in the direction it is more fun being
a monster. More than that. I have got a perfect win record with
the Monster and a perfect loss record as a Hunter. That's one of the
cool things about being the Hunter, though, is that you feel like you
actually did get a victory if you take down the Monster. I would like
to experience that feeling, Like we we beat Vinny as the Monster in the
Quick Look, but that was kind of you know, that was sort of
special circumstances. Yeah, but I just the game balance, like, as
as a new player, it feels so lopsided in favor of the monster.
Well, I mean, it's all about catching him quick. Seems to be
one of the best ways to actually win as a hunter, because because once
the monster gets to level three, like, it's insanely powerful. Yeah,
yeah, so I mean you gotta get him quick. But I mean that's
hard enough as it is, you know, just getting them trapped in the
arena or finding him even at the very beginning. But yeah, I mean
the way I've been playing, I'm not sitting down and playing four hour sessions.
I think I'd get tired pretty quick of it that way. But just
playing, you know, the couple things I played over the weekend, you
know, here and there, I enjoyed it. Did you feel like you
were like forming proper teams with random players or is it just a fucking mess?
It seems like most people get the gist of what to do. I
don't see a lot of people breaking off and doing their own thing. Like,
you know, whenever I check the map with the touchpad, it's like,
Okay, everyone seems to be going in the general right direction, and
the trapper generally knows to throw down the arena, and yeah, whoever's doing
support is usually you know, shielding someone everyone's kind of playing their class.
Yeah, I'm finding people, Like the first night it was miserable predictably,
you know, like it's like trappers missing the Monster and like healers not healing,
like tot'll end up going like, you know, because the game will
naturally weed out people that don't like to play that way because they why would
they keep playing it? Right, So maybe it ends up self correcting it.
Yeah, I got I got on a couple of teams yesterday when like,
yeah, everybody's doing their thing, but even still fucking Monster. Like
I I have had multiple experiences like the first time I played the Monster,
I had like ignored the tutorial, like barely knew what I was doing.
Got fucking worked before I even hit level two, Like I was down to
like a third health or less. Yeah, and then I just evaded them
long enough to hit level three and came back and just romped them, you
know, Like it it feels like I don't know the skills of the barrier
to entry basically is so much lower playing the Monster, and like it has
to be to some extent because you're playing alone one versus four, It's it's
all on you. So I just wondered, like, you know, if
you're having these pickup groups that are going okay, but I wonder if they
were actually tight, if they would be going way better. Yeah, it's
possible, I'd imagine. And again I haven't really played anything like that outside
of the Quick Look and of course different circumstances there. So I gotta prefer
it that way though, because that way, like killing the monster is in
actual achievement. Yeah, you know, it's like actually hard to do.
Yeah, I mean, it feels good whenever you win as the hunter,
for sure, it is. But if if you need, if you should
have to get like a group that you know together to pull that off.
Like that's kind of a an imposing proposition for a lot of people. To
rad pointed out, I spent a little time with the Evolved iOS that it's
a match three puzzle game like puzzle Quest from the makers of w W E
Supercar. Wait, it's really same studio, did it? Oh wow?
Okay? Had daddy? Yeah daddy. But like there's these there are points
in there where you're supposed to be able to unlock things in main Evolve,
the main game from that app, and it's like you you bought some of
them and I bought someone it's like progress towards getting two percent accuracy. Like
it's yeah, it's it's very unclear as to what the actual benefit is from
playing that rather poor iOS game. How do you fuck that up? That
thing is? Don't don't forget that? Think is you? You sucked that
up by like everyone, Like there are a zillion puzzle quests knockoffs these days.
The bar has been raised. Uh, and this game, you know,
it's like you have your four abilities or four sets of abilities because you
have the four characters. But the balance of it seems to be shifted in
favor of like, well, we would like it if people paid some real
money to buy boosts, because that thing is I think is rotten with free
play micro transaction type stuff. Yeah, so it seems like it is pushed
in that direction, like you should pay ninety nine cents right now to restore
everybody to full health. Okay, no stuff like that. No, I
don't I'm making that up. But it's similar. It's the spirit of it
that's not. I'm not willing to do that. Not for like a companion
app. The companion app should be the sort of thing that shouldn't have any
of that shit in it, because it should be a free thing that is
like, hey, you're gonna get some benefit and please buy our main game.
It should be like the thank you for buying our sixty dollars product.
Here's something you can use to level up a little more quickly. Or you
could be playing this because we shipped it two weeks before the main game to
get a leg up on the competition of oh god, please pre order our
game today. Like it should be a marketing thing, not a not a
like a cost like a like a revenue generator into itself. I think it's
super crass in a game, in a game that people have been like like
widely targeting as being super crass with it's it's additional content. I'm I'm I'm
of two minds on that stuff. If you guys kept up with that,
just the yeah, the huge hubbub around. I went and looked at what
they're actually selling. It doesn't that much different than a fighting game. So
there's the season pass which gets you like more, which is actually it's actually
more characters, yeah, gameplay stuff. Yeah, which that's fine, Like
I said, fighting games sell characters. After the fact, all the time.
It's not perfect. But like the big headline that generated all the outrage
last week was like like, oh, we've all just like like a big
deluxe edition doesn't get you this one hundred and thirty dollars a DEALC or whatever.
It was like, it was like, here's all this DEALC that you
have to pay for on no matter what, and it's all like weapons skins
and monster skins and stuff like that stuff is cosmetics, cosmetic stuff, which
is insane. But like, on the other hand, if you want to
make the argument that Base Evolved does not have enough monsters and enough hunters in
it, like, I'll totally listen to that argument. The other part of
their argument is they say that all the maps will always be free. Yes,
there is that, which I guess that's something we don't know how many
maps they intend to make, so that could be jack shit. I mean,
I'm looking at in the game and it's not like hurting from maps out
of the gate from what I saw, yea, and it seems like it
has enough care. I don't. I don't know, I don't. I
don't like it enough to care about any of this. Well, I kind
of I think there's something there. It's kind of fun, I think,
But at the same time, like you know, when you say, like
here's one hundred dollars edition of the game which they add on Steam, like
the Monster Pack or whatever that was, like it was even more than plus
season past. It was ninety nine. Didn't they have like one hundred and
forty or one hundred and thirty dollars one? I thought they had like the
PC Monster Race one maybe that was that was one hundred dollar one. I
think for pre order. Understandably, we've all lost track of all the faund
there's a spreadsheet going around. I believe it. I believe it. Yeah,
And it's you know, like I don't know, man, Like it's
it's frustrating that this stuff happens. At the same time, like if they
want to sell a bunch of dumb cosmetic shit like go for it, who
fucking cares? Like we need to get to a point where people stop feeling
like they need to own one hundred percent of everything for a game unless they
really really really like it. Yeah, and then in that case, maybe
spend the money if you really like it. I don't know, but fucking
skins, who gives us Yeah, but where where I do have a concern
just you know, look at what they look at what they put on the
disc. It's it's twelve Hunters and three monsters, right, and you get
one monster and four Hunters out of the gate, and it takes fucking forever
to get to any more of that stuff, Like you have to play a
ton of matches right with the assault guy to get the next assault guy.
It's like, you ship this game, and when you think that's a good
thing or a bad thing, it seems like the ramp is so slow that
you could argue that like it makes the you know, if they had an
ability to unlock some of that stuff, like people wouldn't potentially pay it.
That's that's the concern though. Did they artificially inflate the amount of time it
takes to get the new stuff to make it feel like the game has more
value? What I'm saying, I mean they they control all those numbers,
like they ship. They shipped a game and locked two thirds of the gameplay
variety behind this insanely slow progression. Yeah. I don't think that has anything
to do with the the DLC or the payment options per se. I just
think that's a bad choice to me. I think that's that's poor design.
I don't know. To me cynically, I look at that and go like,
well, they thought maybe the amount of content here was questionable, so
they've artificially extended out how long you'll be playing the game to get to the
later stuff. But I didn't think that's more likely to lead to a case
where the people that are on the fence about that sort of thing would just
stop. I think I would play it less if it was a quick ramp
to unlock everything, because it is a fairly slow ramp. But I really
like unlocking those new hunters. So when I see that, like, oh,
I need to start using my Arc Minds more to unlock the next assault
guy or whatever. You know, I really want to get to last Verus.
I like seeing that progress, you know. I at the end of
every match, I like seeing how close I'm getting to the next one.
And if it all unlocked real quick, I don't know if i'd feel pressured
to play it seems like maybe, like that's a weird way because you have
to level up every single one of your weapons to watch the next guy.
Fucking Arc Minds suck, Yeah, the idea that you would have to go
in and try to use them as much as possible to level them up,
which seems at some point like to be a detriment to your team. I
can't you know, maybe I haven't played enough to like speak to the balance
that say that that that for certain, But in my experience, the arc
minds have not been my first choice of weapons, or even even if they're
useful, like maybe you just don't like using them, you know, yeah,
like like having to use all the abilities when some of them may not
be. Really just that call of duty thing where you know, there was
a while there that like it got to like, well you have these weapon
challenges to unlock this stuff, and like, okay, well now I need
one hundred pistol kills, so I'm gonna go into every game with this pistol
and even though it's not the best way to play, I need to get
this stuff. That's why they don't have multiplayer achievements and Call of duty games,
because it encourages people to do dumb shit and and not play well.
So, you know, like it's it's sort of that's somewhat related. I
guess I would say I don't know, have you unlocked it in your characters?
Yeah? Which ones do you have? I've got as far as the
monsters, I've got the crack in and then I've got Lazarus on the medic
I've got the second assault guy. I think his name is Markover maybe that's
the first. I've got the second assau Yes, yes, I have that
guy. And I'm about to unlock the robot guy on the support or I
think it's Support. But yeah, there's the robot game guy named Buster announcer
or something. I do love, like the intro to the game, just
this fucking motley crew of like like here's every walking cliche we can think of
the stuff into the space ship. You know, it's like like here's your
Australian big game hunter with the handlebar or like you know, walrus mustache.
Like here's your crazy Piro guy that just wants to burn everything. Like somebody's
got a cigar. I'm sure somebody has a cigar, you know. Like
that was fun. Actually that was fun. But you have to pay a
two ninety nine to get the right I mean yeah, I don't know.
Like the DALC conversation has been going on for as long as there's been DLC
at some point, at some point, like you have to look at it,
well, I don't know. I look at it as an extension of
expansions for PC games when they would sell these forty dollars add ons that we're
often not worth the money. Sure, at least now it's piecemeal in a
way that like, you can get the things you might actually want to use
instead of being forced to take on all this shit. But you know,
the littus test for DLC has always been are you happy with what's exactly in
the base package? And in this case, I can't say, because two
thirds of it I can't play right now, you know, right, Like
I the default assault guy seems cool, but I would love to try the
other two and see which one I like the best. But I'll probably never
see the third one. But hey, when they eventually release one more,
you could just pay to get that phone. And maybe it is kind of
sleazy. Yeah, it's I don't know, I don't, I don't.
I don't love the way that strut that game top the bottom just seems really
awkward and off to me. Kind of a shame because the base game,
like the core concept, is kind of cool. Yeah, it's maybe it's
been fun. Maybe it doesn't work as a sixty dollars concept. I don't
know, it's it's a weird thing. It is. Indeed, you don't
understand it esports. Yeah, that's right, Yeah, that's the fun.
Maybe you should listen to a few more shout casts and then you'll please Man,
we're open source around here. It's ice cast all day long. Yeah,
Like their attempts to try to like promote this thing as if it were
some kind of esports thing before it's even out. Are they still doing that
though, Like they were doing that, they might have backed away. They
were hitting that pretty hard. I don't actually know it packs a while back.
Yeah, they like announcers announcing it golf matches or something, right,
that's fucking dumb. Yeah. My feeling on that stuff has always been like,
you know, let the community decide if this is going to be a
viable esport. Like do your work obviously, like you know, make sure
you're making a balanced game and that everyone benefits from that, the casual players
to the people they would be pros. You know, Like at some point
though, it becomes a matter of like are you going to devote resources to
like a spectator camera that's good, or a announcer position sort of thing that
can connect to a game. Just just scope that out and do it later.
If your game takes off, like don't when you launch with all of
it, your game looks fucking needy and set. Yes, that's an incredibly
discerning audience and they will get turned off super quickly if you're trying to shove
it down their throats. Uh you know, kind of have to let them
decide. Yeah, uh so you're gonna keep playing Evolved Dan here and there,
you're not super I like the game. I've enjoyed my time playing it,
but yeah, it's not gonna be every night thing if you if you
want to group up, I would, like I said, outside of the
quick look, I have played it, like like you said, only played
it with Andos, So yeah, we should try to do someday when you
know people that we know that have it. And yeah, I get a
game. I feel like I feel like we should give it its due in
a weird way. It's like I should play this the way it's supposed to
be played at least a couple of times. Yeah, yeah, I got
that out of a quick look yeah, and then you know, like hear
and Mary talk about it a little bit, and she was talking about like
how they seem to be making a whole lot of videos for it over a
game spot because that's they you know, it's a big release, that's what
they do. It sounded like they were maybe getting a little a little done
with it. We'll burn out. Yeah, yeah. Even looking at a
pre release, I was like, I don't know if this is gonna have
legs beyond a month or two, but we will see. Outside of that,
I can't talk about details yet, but I beat the new Kirby on
We You. That'll be on next week's podcast. I'm talking about that.
We'll have a technical knockout or oh, oh, there you go, Drew.
He you see that segue he did there? Hey, oh that's that's
a poorly time segue because we have to take a break right. Oh boom,
damn we're back. Hey Brad, Hi, Hi, Hello, how's
it gone? It's going? What are you doing? I don't know sitting
here in a while, since we're Jatt sitting here behind this all this equipment,
much flashing lights, feel so it's intimidating. All that horsepower between your
legs. Dell PC spread this thing up running Windows seven red line. This
mother just about on five. Wait, no, this thing's running XP because
it still running XP. Yeah, what was the deal? The Vintage,
Like the control surface for the tri caster doesn't work on anything about caster.
It's the main mixer, the sir. Yeah, yeah, so we're stuck
on XP here. It's a good operating system. Still churning with Audacity.
Yeah, well, I mean so Adobe Auditions installed. I got my workflow.
Yeah it works well enough. Audacity's only crashed once since since I've been
doing this. Okay, Uh so we'll yeah, we'll check out the new
Kirby game at the end of the week. Yes, like you said,
quick look. Yeah, we'll have a review up tomorrow and have a quick
look tomorrow the next day, you know, right soon, And then you
beat Tyson on your first day. It's done as predicted. Who predicted that?
Me? You did? Yeah? I think you just said what would
you do if you beat him? Yeah? But dude, I knew what
was going to happen. Predicting. Yeah, but you have been trying to
beat that guy on a shitty HDTV while drinking in a bar. I've also
tried it while sober on an HDTV, so you know, remove the latency
issue and sobered you up. I don't, I really, And I had
a feeling that it was just gonna happen. I felt like even with the
CRT thing, it felt like I still had as much trouble reacting to Tyson's
uppercuts. I mean, it's if it's a change, it is a minute,
little change. But yeah, I guess you can't argue that I've spent
you know, years trying to beat this and then I do on the first
try when I do it here or two like, yeah, it is literally
a menute change. We're talking about frames, we're working on milli seconds here.
It's well, the real tests, Tyson, that's what matters. That
is, I guess every frame matters. The real test will be when I
go to soda Popenski's and I try to get that free bottle of champagne and
get my picture up on the wall. That's a bar. That is a
bar that yeah, it's named after Popenski from Why are they still allowed to
go under that name? Why isn't Nintendo stepped in? And because they weren't
aware yet, But you know, Dan's continuing his streak of destroying businesses and
other other fly by night operations, which Flam has only gotten bigger by outing
them on the internet. I brought up Soda Popenski's on my first BombCast and
it they're still doing well. Side, I have an un good authority that
employees of Nintano of America listen to this podcast, so dear, oh my
goodness. Well, yeah, the authorities maybe need be on their way.
That bar that has nothing to do with punch, Yeah, yeah, you
can still do that. I got any has public exhibition of a video game
That sounds like a crime to me. That's a rebroadcast NFL events, you
know. Yeah, they better hope they don't upload YouTube clips of those video
games over there. They're super fucked. Also, it doesn't offering a prize
make it a contest by Yeah, it's like gambling and a contest by by
us. Watch. I guess I've also talked bars into showing wit or Eat
pay per views. Uh, that's probably legal to right, but we did
the room. I don't even know if she's talking about Oh I don't either.
I mean back before I work, Yeah, back in Kansas. If
Nintendo comes down on them. They should just change their name. The vodka
drink nskis Yeah that's also. Yeah, there you go. But yeah,
I'm gonna try to do it there sometimes in the near future because free bottle
champagne. Oh why champagne though, because that's celebratory thing. Well it is,
but nobody because then you can shout I'm the shamp champ and then pop
the bottle and pour it over your fucking head. Okay, yeah, all
right, only if you open it with a sword though, yeah, saber
it opened the weight of some kind of can bottle on your head and go
I'm the best. But I've seen pictures of that place, and nobody in
their right mind in a bar like that would be drinking champagne. And prior
to doing this, I think this is part of the uniqueness of that And
I just really want my picture on the wall there. Well, actually it
already is because there are only three pictures on the wall and I was there
for the third one. So in the background of the third one you see
me sitting at a table. But no, I want I want to be
a front and center there. I want that chance. So that's a real
honor. Oh ya, I should be proud. I gotta have goals the
background of that picture. So yeah, we'll see if I can do it
on an HVTV. I think I've got all the patterns down as much as
you can with Tyson, and you know you can do it. That's the
thing. I think that was the biggest monkey on my back is just being
terrified of him for twenty five years. And now that I've done it,
I think I might be able to do it regularly. I can't believe you
did it in one you and Jason, seriously for like over a week.
You said a week, but no, I think it's been over week of
you guys testing and trying to get that set up. This is exactly how
I hope this would go down. This is I hope it's just like go
through all this set up this fucking rig and roll like it's cut. I
think it's coming at first, ans to one project onto a crt uh directly
and split that signal and go into all our modern video equipment. Yeah,
what did you do? What did you do to split the thing? How
is how is the nes out putting? We'll start at the front of the
chain. It goes you know what I should just do a video about this.
But like it's it's split out at the source, so it's video signal
comes out of the composite, video splits out of the NES to the TV
and then to our series of boxes. So Dan is not getting anything from
our video equipment. It's just literally a piece of metal splitting a video signal
going into that. I forgot the TVs used to have video out. Four
Hollywood lawyers got a hold of. Was that was that why that started?
Like most check that t most most new TVs don't pass like any kind of
decent video signal out because of piracy stuff. Uh all right, yeah,
I'd be curious to see that stuff. Yeah, yeah, I'll do it.
I know something out of it, even I got something out of it
if nothing else. I mean, that's honestly. I love this outcome.
That was so much fun. That was super fun. Well, the first
fight I got within I got to the round three and I got within like
three to five punches of getting a third knockout on him in one round.
You think that was the best you had done to date? Yeah, to
date? That first one I did was the best run of tyson I had.
And then I was just way too jazz that I don't even started.
Like, I was like, all right, I need to check some audio,
and then you played it for a second, You're like, oh no,
I'm doing too good yet. Yeah, I try. I stopped.
I took a dive because I couldn't do it until we were filming. But
yeah, and then I got I just got like physically, like my body
just felt like just electricity was going through because I got so close, and
so I was just way out of it for the next like several fights.
And then I got back on the zone. And uh yeah that was a
hell of a thing. Yeah. Yeah, I'm still feeling real good.
That'll be up on the site by the this. Yeah, that's compressing right
now, Premium members, nothing else. Now. We have a good setup,
reliable set up to play old demanding games on. So I'm gonna take
that game, that all that stuff home. That's my Nintendo. I'm taking
it all home, plug other consoles into it. Oh sure, Yeah.
Yeah. We didn't want to do the retron for this, just in case
that kind of weirdness. Yeah, yeah, I wanted to as real as
it could have been. So well, congratulations, thank you. I'm feeling
real good, excellent, Uh, Drew, yes, play anything. I
played that hot new release Halo two. Oh yeah, yeah, Alexis came
over and we played the master Chief Collection. Local co op. The work
was functional. Yeah, uh, I mean local co op. Yeah,
local co op work. Hasn't it looked like two years you guys stayed up
whole night doing that. Yeah, and you were itching to play it again.
Yeah, you know, it looks good. They did a great job,
you know, right, I guess Yeah, you guys hadn't gone through
the whole thing with all the graphical right improvements. Yeah, and they've those
new cinematics list. Yeah, those are some really nice CG cut scenes.
Yeah, so it all all worked fine. Yes, there have been some
scattered reports of the single player stuff in in that game being iffy, but
I've not tried it. Uh co op across the internet, Yeah, I
think in a lot of cases that it was just campaign issues that were still
related to some kind of okay, but even like when you're back, when
you're out in the menu, there's no indication that there are two controllers plugged
in, so we had to just like hit start, And I think this
is co op and just like hope it's like that, UIs. It's it's
not just the matchmaking stuff, it's the whole interface is just bad in the
game. Or is that more of the falls of the console. It's the
game? Okay, uh, it's yeah. You know you have like on
the right side. It's like, here's where everyone would be if they were
in your party. But sometimes I show up, sometimes they don't. I
don't know. I haven't tried online in a long time, but I haven't
heard great things. Well, get to that in the emails. Oh great,
cool. I hadn't talked anybody that had played through that entire redone campaign
yet, I've played through the entire thing. We got to I think we
got some new mumbassa all right, but yeah, it's it's great. I
love that. I love that first part of Halo two. Yeah, with
the kind of the what is it with the arbiter going on trial and all
that stuff? Oh actually, yeah, we got to the first arbiter level
and then stopped. I've seen was it Halo tooth people were complaining about basically
the insertion of load screens. You know what I'm talking about, was that
the one that was designed basically to never hit a load, m or am
I mixing up my halos? I think you're right, because I think the
cut scenes were supposed to be to cover up the loads. Halo one certainly
had loads. Yeah, I can't remember if we I was just wondering if
that bothered you as a purist. It bothered me because the load times were
long and they were along Like Alexis even commented he doesn't have an Xbox One,
and I was like, yep, this is pretty much part for the
course for the Xbox A lot along load times. It has a lot of
rammed to fill. Yeah, and that thing I don't know, man,
all right, so I had to I had to clear space on multiple PlayStation
befores this week. Yep. Speaking of loading things on the drives and stuff,
go get that there, go get that too, terabyte man, free
yourself. Is it as easy to switch it? Yeah? That's full?
Oh wow? Is it as easy? Because I swapped out hard drives on
PS three and that was surprisingly really somewhat easier. Four, it's not.
It's very easy. Oh wow, that plastic case just comes right off.
It's a user accessible screw you just fucking go And do you still just have
to buy like a normal laptop as long as it's like good. There are
so I guess there are different sizes of laptop drives that vary by like a
few millimeters, and like I guess the biggest laptop drive won't fit in there,
but most of them will. Okay, if I wanted to get like
a two terabyte, I'll just I can show you the one that I got.
Yeah, I mean, are they cheap? Though at this point I
assume getting like two terabytes than that bad ninety bucks. It's nothing, all
right, yeah, all right? Yeah. And then the big chunk of
my weekend was spent sitting on a on a porch watching a lady with a
dog walk by. Dog pooped on the sidewalk and she didn't pick it up.
So then for about four hours we just watched and see if people are
stepped in the dog poop. That's yeah, that's really fun to big old
pack of Madelo and had myself a time. She said, a big portion
of your weekend was devoted to this, and I was sitting here thinking what
the fuck? And then it all made sense. Yeah, and well,
so I think what we hypothesized was it was such a large amount that it
was like popping up in the people's peripheral vision, so they would see it
and avoid it. But you should have gotten out there cut it into chunk
spread That happened on its own because it got kicked, Okay, so then
it kind of gets spread out a little more. Uh. And then once
that happened a couple of times, then we got some serious steppage. Nice
Drew. You want to know the best possible place to do that? What's
that Bourbon Street in New Orleans? Because I believe I told the story on
the power Bomb cast because I was down there for Rustlemania last year. And
there's a lot of drunk people in New Orleans, and there's also a lot
of horses. Cops ride horses, and horses poop a lot, and sometimes
right there on Bourbon Street, and it's we spent numerous hours just leaning against
the bar, drinking hurricanes and waiting for people to step in the horsepoop.
Horse Poop's weird, man, there's a lot. Yeah. I put a
video on my YouTube thing of de Wu superstar Drew McIntyre and his date coming
real close stepping on that horsepoop, and that would have been real funny.
But it's a good time. I saw a girl angrily throw her beer at
the poop, and she almost stepped in it. She stepped over it,
and we all like you know, yelled like oh you know, and she
turned around and was so disgusted by the giant thing of poop she just threw
her full beer onto the poop. I've never seen anyone throw beer at poop.
Then you run the risk of then you run the risk of splashback with
poop infused beer. No, no, she she was a good like three
or four feet away. I think she was saying, what kind of dog
were we talking here? I don't know, big dog big. It's a
lot of poop, Yeah, it was. It was a lot. I
should have run out there at some point and replaced the poop with a sausage
Mad magazine style, or like anybody the rubber one, like the little curl
up. Yes, y'all got fake poop. That always weirded me out because
it's like you look at it and you're like, sausage is tasty, poop
is not. I'm so I'm so conflicted. I don't know what. Yep,
that was Mad Magazine, right, I'm not making this up. I
think it was Mad magazine. Are you sure the Cracked? I'd swear it
was Mad that like every time there was poop involved in an illustration, they
just had a giant sausage link instead. Am I making this? Subscribe to
Mad for like twelve years. Maybe it wasn't what you're talking about. Maybe
it wasn't. I don't know. I didn't National Lampoon, I didn't read
Cracked. I didn't read National Lampoons. I had Cracked like Mad and Cracked
when I was kid. I didn't subscribe to Cracked, but I would pick
up Cracked from time to time. See Vester P. Smith was an all
right guy, really, the janitor. I always just assumed he was a
poor man's Oh yeah, I mean he was. I guess that was the
point. Yes, Cracked was definitely the poor man's Mad. Even when Dave
Burg jumped fucking ship from one to the other, You're like, mana,
did that really happen? Crack didn't have the fold ends at the end of
the issues exactly. The weirdest thing about Mad for me was that I'd never
bought it. My cousin, who was a good bit older than me,
had a bunch of old issues. Those are the good ones. So yeah,
so I was reading like Mad from the seventies, like Mad from before
your time is crazy because like all the political jokes, all the political shit
just went completely over my head because I had no idea what they were talking
about. Yeah, what was the demographic for that? Because I remember being
like eight and nine and reading Mad magazine and getting like Ducacus jokes and stuff,
and like, I guess I gotta figure out who this guy is,
Like is it four teenagers or people old enough to follow politics? Like it
seems like it's so ju ni to you, buddy, Yeah, it is
fair. It is fairly driven on to eighty Okay, I don't know.
I feel like I learned a lot about politics and stuff by virtue of it.
Yeah, Mad certainly commenting on it. Yeah. Yeah, I think
between like Mad and Letterman and Conan, that's like, as a child,
that's all I know about politics, just through those you're really Mad in the
nineties. Yeah, I probably read Mad from like nineteen ninety to two thousand
maybe, and crack, I bet that was really fucking rough. I was
a kid. I don't know. Yeah, fair enough rough all Like did
just did the quality go down the hill. Yeah, look like because I
I ended up. I was. I was reading Mad in like eighty four
and stuff like, yeah, I was. I was. That's about when
I was like they were putting pac Man on the cover and shit. Uh
And it got real fucking terrible near the end of the eighties. But again,
you were getting older. Yeah, that's that's true. Like it was,
but it was definitely like it was one of those cases where like my
grandmother was getting me a subscription to Mad every year, and I probably got
it into the nineties, and I think about it, I was like in
high school at that point. I was like, I'm just I mean,
I'm still reading these things, but I'm just knocking them out in like two
minutes, and it's gonna like this is tur you know, maybe when you
ask who what's the demographic from Mad magazine, maybe it's like kids, it's
eight or eighty. Yeah, right, it's one or the other. Like
you turn twelve and you age out of it. But yeah, like my
grandmother and you know, just by having kids that were older than I was,
like, yeah, there were a ton of like sixties, seventies or
just early fucking issues of Mad, and like the trade paperbacks and stuff they
would do as well, like a lot of those the super special editions or
whatever in the books. Yeah, the books, the books. And I'm
trying to remember. I think my first issue was like the Michael Keaton Batman,
like the first one, which that confuses me because I was born in
eighty four and the movie was like, what eighty nine? It was like
fucking five years old reading Mad Maggots sounds about Ryan Okay, yeah, I
remember liking a lot at five. Yeah, yeah, like I definitely I
distinctly remember doing most of my Mad Magazine reading on the floor. Yeah,
so yeah, high terrors. That sounds about right. Well, maybe not
that young. Yeah, getting my diaper change. They're still making what right?
I wanted to see what Mad Magazine in twenty fifteen monthly anymore? Because
not ACTI like a set number of like really issues per years. Last time
I was looking at it, it was like eight issues a year or something
like that. Press. I'm not really sure where it's at these It was
the was the founder of the thing, William Gaines kicked off a while yeah,
a while ago, yeah, yeah, like a spot stuff yeah five
versus remember being really excited when Mad TV was Yeah, that's right, and
really unexcited watched it. It was like, man, this is like the
Mad magazine. Integration is shaky at best. Yeah, the company is a
rung below. Remember the first episode was like Gump fiction and it was Forrest
Gutt mixed with pulp fiction, which I should have been the right age.
I was like nine or ten when that started, and even I thought it
was way too just low brow and easy, because like I was a SNL
guy. Sure, I was like, man, this does isn't matching up
that st now at all? Yeah, No, it definitely didn't. Yeah,
there probably will not be a Mad TV fortieth anniversary special probably in the
future. There was like there were people on that cast that were super fun.
Yeah, it was like they launched a couple of careers, didn't they
voice of Vamped and Meddle or Solid to Phil Phil Lamar was on that show
before he got heavy in video game acting, the guy who got shot in
the face and pulp fiction. Yeah, yeah, that's yeah, that's right.
That's where I learned to Phil Lamar was Man TV. I watched that
Saturday Night Live forty Yeah I wanted to, didn't, but fucking twice in
one month. I have somehow been vexed by not being able to get a
ticket chord cutter. It went from it went from the most worthless network to
like, suddenly I want to watch stuff on there. Pay a buck and
a half every month for the opportunity to occasionally watch television. Yeah, it's
it's not. I'm not like, I'm not like a militant chord cutter or
something. I just don't you should be. I just don't care. I
don't care enough to get cable. I watched the entire thing, which was
like a half hour kind of best of thing. There was an hour red
carpet thing and see the best of thing. Yeah, there's like a half
hour, and then there was the red the red carpet thing, which was
the most self indulgent piece of shit, Like I didn't go on to watch,
almost turned it off watching fucking Matt Lower Well that's all red carpet,
Yeah exactly. It was just like why the fun would they do this fucking
dumbass red carpet bottle? Well, I mean it's a special event. Let
them have their list. To me, it was it was the perfect example
of like the thing that happened to that show and everyone talks about it,
like, man, it was on the edge. That ship was out there,
man, chevy Chase not not ready for prompt I played. Man,
those guys were all crazy. Here's our fucking red carpet special with Matt Lower.
Fucking we're just saying I got two corporated or something. Yes, okay,
totally. It's the fucking softest show in the land. Like there's you
know, there's no edge and set it a lot. Maybe you find something
like you know, in the back fifteen minutes, someone accidentally slipped some onto
the show, so that Kyle Mooney and Beck Thennett stuff is usually pretty good.
The weekend depth they stuffing jokes, they're saying it's not good. Yeah,
yeah, I'm just see to it something looking to it for some kind
of counterculture. It has not been that for I wouldn't. Yeah, even
when I was growing up and it was you know, Ires and Farlane stuff,
I didn't even consider that. It didn't seem like counterculture to me.
Like that said, the original cast was counterculture, Yeah, yeah, I
mean there was certainly edged to it in the nineties, I think, though
I don't and maybe it was just because the Internet wasn't the Internet yet.
I mean that might be now. It's just like everything is so in your
face and so filthy. I just don't see the current show as being that
crazily different than you know, the early nineties that I started watching on you
know. Yeah, I don't know. I don't really keep current with it.
Yeah. It was Norman attend Norm was there, managed to weasel his
way up front for the fucking goodbyes at the end. Yeah, just standing
there staring at the camera or everyone else is hugging and talking everyone, Norm
just being Norman clapping. Ah, he was. He was a weekend update
anchor, the best weekend That's like, that's like that's like being a ring
bearer, Like you get to you get to take a ship to the undying
Lands at the end of your life. Yeah, eventually. Yeah, and
I wish him well on this journey. Colin Quinn was there, yes,
yeah, the same deal, making fun of how we mumbled all the time.
Victoria Jackson was there, just not on anything, shouldn't do anything.
Yeah, I saw a picture of her. She was clearly in attendance.
Oh wow, not recognized. It's that Conan was one of the only big
names that couldn't make it because he's filming stuffs in Cuba, which sounds great
when he went to Iceland a few years ago, it's incredible, it's really
good. Yeah, So should I seek out that show if it becomes available?
No, yes, you know, no, because like it's it's they
don't. They don't do any justice to the bits of Like the new stuff
they shot I think is interesting and some of it was funny, like this,
They did a new celebrity Jeopardy bit that I thought was pretty good.
But did they they did they prerecord all the skits? No? No,
no, they're always alive. Dan Arod got out there and did Bassematic again
lot yea the very first I will I will pull up as good as the
original, of course not, but hey, great, I'll pull up a
video of that for sure. Whole thing, all the live bits have the
feel of like, hey, we're not on a show. Oh, it's
like it's our funny this we rewrote all these jokes to fit this corporate uh
picnic that we're doing. You know. It's like, you know, they're
they're all referential to the show itself. It's not like here's current events,
what Ridge or anything. It it's fun for what it is. It's a
it's a fun look at the show. One of my favorite sad moments was
during the red carpet thing where they're interviewing Acroid and Jim Belushi and it's Matt
Lowerd trying to ask questions about like legacy US now and near one of the
originals, and they kept trying to turn every question back into like, yeah,
we're just you know, we're still doing it. We're still traveling around
the country. We do the Blues Brothers together live, you know, all
over the world. It's just like they're trying to show this sad fat Blues
Brothers fifteen. And then they went out and actually sang a song and we're
fucking too. Yeah. Yeah, Like if they do this every night,
you think they'd be a little more fucking on point. I mean, we
got to just be someplace in Reno or something could be fair. I think
they were, you know, like everyone seemed to be getting drunker as the
night went on. Also, it was three and a half hours fucking long.
Yeah. It got to the point where like the jokes about how long
the show was were too long. Like everything like it was just like,
okay, you made too many of these. Now, it was intense.
At what year was it that Eddie Murphy decided he never wanted to be funny
again? Yeah, it was so it was. I mean after post Nuttie.
That was right around the time, bever, those Cop three came out
like Boomerang? Yeah, what was that Vampire one? Yeah? Not a
not a terrible movie. Well, the thing is, you watch these old
clips Eddie Murphy, that mister Robinson's neighborhood and the Gumby stuff, and he
was fucking hilarious. He was so on point. That's so young. He
was so fucking funny. And then there's just this point where he like,
just like when he came out to do his thing, it's supposed to be
this big thing. Eddie Murphy's back didn't even attempt to be funny. He's
like, yeah, I think it's cool. That's some stuff I did thirty
five years ago. I think you know it's cool that people still care about
it. Cool. Thanks, like, you used to be the funniest dude
in the world. What happened to you? I remember? So he did.
He was on Inside the Actors Studio some years ago and I remember watching
that and a big part of what he had, you know, what was
driving him at that point, Like it kind of puts some of it into
perspective, was this feeling of just like he really likes putting on suits and
all the makeup and costumes and doing voices and like disappearing and not being a
part of a scene to the point where like you can see like, oh,
well, clearly the Clumps is exactly what he wants to be doing because
he can put on this giant fat suit and just disappear into these roles and
orbit and not be Eddie Murphy playing a role. But his stand up was
Eddie Murphy being Eddie Murphy, and that was enough to be fucking hilarious,
raw and delirious, and like that was him not playing a character. At
some point he probably got tired of doing it. Yeah, he was so
good though, he doesn't feel like he has anything left to say, yeah,
that he wants to say in public, doesn't have anything left to prove.
I mean, he's doing well for himself, yeah whatever, But yeah,
it is, Yes, it is kind of frustrating, Yeah, because
it's one of those things where you're like, man, imagine if we had
another ten years of Eddie Murphy doing Eddie Murphy stuff, wasted, natural talent,
slumber, more flubber. Uh, but you know it is what it
is. Yeah. Robin Williams, he was in the Nutty Professor that was
about no. He said flabber. No, nob flabber was originally a Jerry
Lewis thing, and then they made a Robin Williams Okay, Okay, yeah,
yeah, I'm thinking of Nutty Professor. But I said flabber. Anybody
see Pluto Nash, You know I missed that one. Weird Yeah, all
right, now that our comedy Symposium has come to an end. Yeah,
it's it's a weird show. Like, you know, there's so many montages
and stuff, but like they don't show full sketches or anything. So like,
as a show on its own, it's not really telling you anything.
It's just like, do you care enough about these people to see them introduce
montages or no? And you know, I was. I was happy to
have watched it, but I'm not gonna sit here and tell you it's a
great show. See the highlights. Yeah, someone did tweet me something that
sounds really interesting. I didn't know that Jay Moore wrote a book called Gasping
for Airtime, and it's about his time as a writer and just struggling to
get stuff on the air, which I know Larry David always did too.
I didn't know there's a whole book about it. So I just bought that
and I'm really looking forward to starting. I keep meaning to read the one
Big from New York Life fro New York is one of my favorit book I've
ever. It's fascinating here in stories about like you know, Oden Kirk,
like rooming with Chris Farley and him coming back from benders and stuff, growing
couches and it's it's a fascinating books. Is that just a straight up tell
all? So yeah, it's so they got everyone that's ever mattered, and
that's not like the way it's written is amazing. Is it's chronological and so
like you know, from seventy five to eighty it'll be like, okay,
here's Chevy you're writing a few paragraphs, and now here's Laurie Newman. And
you know, it's just written from everyone from writers like Michael o'donahue and stuff
too. Oral history, Yeah, yeah, exactly, And it's all people
get out there and say, yes, Chevy Chase is a fucking terrible person,
like basically everyone think basically everyone has. I don't think anybody needs to
say that at this point. I think it's just like if you're the specifics,
because it's it's one of those things where it's like you always hear that
he's a fucking awful, awful person. And it was weird seeing him on
that show. I mean, of course, he was, of course terrible.
He did not look great and when when they interviewed him on the Red
Carpet, he just couldn't really talk well, and like he's in his seventies,
you know, is he in his seventies? Yeah, I think he's
like seventy one twenties and seventy five makes sense, it's been that long.
Shit. Yeah, yeah, he got very ununny. I haven't seen community,
but I've never seen Chevy do anything funny and quite a while. Yeah,
he was, you know, the right man for the for a very
specific chunk of time. Yeah, all right, well I'll check out the
highlights in the meantime. What if we check out the highlights of the news.
Sure, yea great, let's talk about the news. I forget who
mentioned the Bethesda E three conference thingy. Yes, but let's talk about it.
Bethesda is having an E three conference thingy. Yeah, yeah, Sunday
they're doing Sunday night events. Yes, I want to say, like Activision
has done those. Yes, I think so. The last Sunday evening before
E three event that I remember was the big Connect unveiled the Microsoft thing.
We had todcast, the crazy Space Wizards. There was the Middle Gear Theater
thing that was a Sunday when that was ages ago. That was I mean,
that's before my time. I think I would have loved that. It
was just two oh, there was that two thousand. I think, yeah,
I should bring in that DVD. I've got the Japanese DVD that's got
like a ton of footage from that screening, like the first like the first
US screening of the two thousand MGS two trailer. I can't imagine. And
it's like that's like all the you know, it's all the greatest hits of
Ziff Davis back then, like filing and for the camera going to see the
trailer and stuff. It's weird. That's weird. But anyway, Yeah,
like Bethesda clearly has got a lineup of sorts that they are so confident in
that they are going to have their own event. Yeah, which immediately leads
one to think of the word fall out. Sure, or at least it
does me. Yeah, yeah, it's gotta be right anyway, they don't
announce whatever Bethesda Game Studios is making it. Think, yes, I think
they absolutely will have to say what what is coming out of that studio next,
whether it's fall Out or not fall Out or something else. Fucking just
tell us. Yeah, it's been ages. Well, you know it's like
a game of that magnitude. Oh yeah, you know can command a certain
type of stage and there are fewer of those stages left. Now, that's
that's yeah. Jeff Keeley's not on television. Sure, they're only twelve Game
in Former covers every year. But also, you know, you don't want
to websites are not big enough to just like we were gonna do, like
oh we put a lot for on the IGN homepage for a day like ya.
But also you don't want to announce, you know, two years before
release or something. And if this game, you know, for whatever reason,
whether it's like ambition of design or just moving to new consoles or whatever,
Like, this game is clearly taking longer than the last couple of games
they did. Yeah, I wonder if it's just a tech thing of like,
well, you know that engine that they were running all those games on
was pretty jan Yeah, but I've always thought maybe that maybe they're jacking it
up and like just rebuilding everything, or maybe it just took a long time
to get that jan Kiss engine working. Except the lease, they don't run
into the problems they've run into in the past on consoles. I've always you
know, a lot of people always like blame Gamebryo for the extreme jake in
their games. Yeah, but you know, that thing is an off the
shelf engine. I've always suspected that it's all the crazy stuff they add to
it. Oh that is causing all that stuff, you know, like just
having to deal with thousands of ais running around independently at all times, like
stuff like that. Whatever it is they're doing, it's you know, it's
crazy. Yeah, it's ambitious for sure, but yeah, it will be
there. Yeah. So here's here's your open platform to speculate on what will
be at this thing. All right, I'll run down for you exactly what
will be at this thing. Battle Cry, yes, they're free to play
game ye. Doom yeah, Doom ask to be there, the Fallout,
Slash whatever. But as the Game Studios is doing, yep, Dishonored to
Yeph and Elder scrolls online for consoles because it will ship on June ninth,
and it'll still be relevant enough for them to talk about it on their own
stage. If I were building that production, I would open with I probably
opened with a Doom gameplay demo, yeah yeah, and then I would then
I would get battle Cry out of the way, then the Dishonored or Arcane
whatever. Yeah, then whatever, yeso stuff has to happen close the Fallout.
Yeah, that sounds good. That's how I would do it. Yeah,
if all that stuff is there. Sean Elliott from Arcane was on Twitter
kind of pointing people at this thing, which immediately led me to think,
Oh, whatever they're working on is probably gonna be there. But who can
say. But you know, that's a hell of a lineup that's easily too.
Yeah. Two Warriors zero Prime Yeah man, uh yeah, if if
they hit all those high notes like that is easily a lineup that would support
their own external event. Sure, yeah, totally what do you think the
odds are that they are adapting it tech to run open world Skyrim style games.
I have heard from people who would know in the past that that is
a damn near crazy pipe dream and will never happen. It'd be so cool
though year and would take a decade to actually make a game with. All
Right, well, okay, what if there's a new id tech engine and
that is going to be the thing that unders it brought on the like the
very top head technical guy from Critech, Yeah, a few months or a
year ago to basically become their new kind of architect for stuff. Now that
John Carmack has gone so like, yeah, it could be Yeah, I
mean maybe it is going to become like something of a technical yeah wunderhouse.
Well, ay, what do you do with it now? Maybe you like,
what do you you know, are you going to double down on this
this weird ass engine you've been using for a while and bring it forward onto
another generation of consoles or you know? It is this delay explained by all
the technical like behind the scenes work this kid that's getting done. I stumbled
into an interesting Twitter conversation a week or two ago involving Carmack where somebody when
someone was like, John Karmack is awesome, and you responded, fucking a.
Yeah, that was basically what it was. Somebody who had been at
id for a couple of years was in an interview for you know, whatever
they're doing now and kind of name dropped him and tweeted at him about,
you know, like, oh, I was very effusive about you being my
idol or whatever, and his response was like, sorry, working on Doom
wasn't a better experience for you, referring to this new Doom. And then
like people responded to that, going like oh god, is like Carmack is
admitting that Doom is a train wreck, and he was like He's like like,
no, sometimes a good thing comes out of a crucible or whatever.
Yeah, but but he, you know, being pretty plain about the fact
that that game has had kind of its ups and downs. Sure so far,
but you know, they showed a quake con last year and the response
was very positive. Yeah, so the three seems like it is high time
to show off whatever they've got with that game totally is rage dead I probably,
Yeah, I don't think it's ane. Yeah, it didn't do great,
it didn't it looked so Yeah, it sure did. It was brink
Bethesda. Yeah, yeah, that's not that. That's right, that's right,
that's not going And they're doing that dirty Bomb game now, which was
a great name. It's great names, a great name. Very excited when
they got that name back. Yeah. I actually liked Rage a lot until
the ending. Yeah, the last mission of Rage is a huge fucking bummer.
But it's terrible. But I mean, I think the game itself plays
really well. Yeah, Like the shooting fundamentals in that game, I feel
like are way better than a lot of people gave that game credit. Yes,
and it's one of the most gorgeous games. The last town of contest,
Like a lot of the stuff you were doing in town, getting the
stupid glave things, and just like a lot of the periphery and Rage wasn't
worth it. You're you're you're not wrong. Like it had some definitely some
kind of driving. It was sort of open world, was kind of interesting
to look at and drive around a little bit. You know. It was
a good show piece for what that engine could do in its own weird way,
but it did it didn't make for a fun video game. Yeah,
I think the game was at its best in just the pure shooting sequences,
because I mean I still really good at that. I like building the little
turrets and stuff that would follow you around and help you out. Some of
that stuffs cool. Uh, you know the world and maybe not the most
inspired. Yeah, not of an arid desert, you know, very boris
land. Uh. They're streaming that event live, okay, Yeah, so
everybody would get to see it as it happens. So don't worry if you
can't make its probably most people you could see it anyway. Remember when Sony
Online Entertainment got sold and became Daybreak Game Studio and the old days, Yeah,
eons ago, when they were weeks ago, wasn't Yeah something like that,
when they were talking like this acquisition or this kind of transition wouldn't really
affect the projects they have going. It affected those projects, did it,
or rather the people working on them, as as a large number of them
have been laid off. Yeah. A bunch of people working on h one
Z one they're kind of zombie Survivor game. And also a bunch of people
working on ever Quests next. Yes, yeah, we're made redundant, which
is kind of concerning because every quest next sounded like it had some really cool
ideas going for it. Yeah, you know, who knows stuff and all
that. Just yeah, there's a lot of that voxels. Yeah, I
love voxels. Oh yeah, you know, I love vox I do know
that about you. I don't know, like, you know, it's not
my genre, but I think h one z one always seemed like a super
opportunistic, creepy project that was like them going like, we want to get
in this space. I don't know if it's a creepy but opportunistic, sure,
yeah, yeah, but it seems you know, like a lot of
people streaming it and stuff. It seems fairly popular. So it seems like
their decision paid off. But maybe their needs for that game changed maybe,
or maybe they needs for money changed. I don't know. Yeah, you
know, uh, you know, they put out a statement like that people
were let go from both San Diego and Austin, you know, alignment of
resources, better positions, newly independent studio for future growth. You know,
it's kind of standard corporate speak, yeah about people, uh losing their jobs.
But sucks, man. Yeah, it's a bummer. Well you'll see
what happens, you know with their output from here and what they've got going
on. So I feel like it's been a super strange studio for a really
long time. I just I don't don't feel like they've I mean, I'm
sure they're like quietly like doing just fine with stuff like Planet Side and DC.
You know, it's like we don't hear about that stuff that much.
It's funny, like kind of off to the races with it. Now it's
it's done, it's out, it's it's going. It's funny when you would
stop once in a while and think about how many games they were actually running
at one time, and it was a lot like the station passed used to
get you, like, I don't know how many gets you. Now it's
like, here's fucking access to forty games, right, here's like eight different
name of moos that we're still running that you forgot about. Yeah uh so
yeah, yeah, condolencess. People who lost their jobs with it, well
see what happens there. I suppose all right, it's time. I'll all
right, I'm strapped in. Hold on your butts. Okay, it's time
to talk about Peter Malinew. It's time to talk about Goddess. He's a
British man. He is he. He loves his dog. He loves his
dog. He made some video games that were really good. He did.
He's his name is synonymous with hits like Populous. Uh huh, Syndicate sendicate
the movies. Sure, Fable, Dungeon Keeper, Yeah, Fable, Little
Ladder Day. But yeah, sure, I think Fable's pretty good. Uh,
Fable two? Get some other stuff here and there? All right?
Okay, Peter mal new crowdfund of the game called Goddess. You remember that
crowdfunded it? Yes? It Kickstarter? Due? Yeah, kick Goddess was
a straight up Kickstarter Okay, uh you got remember Curiosity, the dumb ass
cube that we all tapped on way too long. Twenty two cans, Yes,
twenty two Cans was his independent studio that he went to reformed rather after
you left Microsoft. Did we all play Curiosity Cube? I did? Yeah?
Did you really play that thing? It play? You boom to be
fair. I liked the idea a lot. I liked the mystery of the
Oh yeah, yes, yeah, that was a great certainly got everybody talking
and tapping. But the payoff was the al Capones vault of video games.
Inside It's just like, here's three empty bottles. And all, we're all
Heraldo. I'm just putting that phrase in the podcast description, but yeah,
you know, your curiosity happened. And then they ran the Goddess Kickstarter and
it was basically like, hey, I'm gonna make another Populace was the gist
of it. Thinking a god game with a bunch of grandiose promises about was
his studio twenty two cans say we're making this? Yes? Uh? And
you know they made a bunch of grandios promises about connected multiplayer and one big
war old and blah blah blah, you know, PC version, Mobile version.
I don't remember the promises. I didn't follow the kickstarter teo. Mart
I just remember downloading the first build of it that was available on Steam and
thinking, this is barely again. It was very shaky. There was very
little there. Uh Anyway, Anyway, the reason this is in the news
is that it sounds like there is still not nearly as much there as there
was supposed to be, or even as the development team would like there to
be. It's good that they're dissatisfied, because I imagine the players probably aren't.
They're satisfied by the product either. Yeah, there have been some rumors
going around about kind of resources running low, morale running low in the development.
Some statements have gotten out there that kind of don't paint a it feels
like it's it seems like a lot of current and former twenty two canzers.
Yes are speaking to the press anonymously. Yes. Forgive me. Forgive me
for being all over the place with this, because there is a lot to
parse here. Because part of the issue is that Mall News seems to have
gone and begun a new project off to the side, and some of the
people who were working on Goddess have now moved on to work on that.
It's called the Trial. Uh is it? Is it a shareware version of
Goddess, like a trial addition, I don't believe that's the case. Well
that's a problematic. Yeah, So so some Goddess team members of you know,
producer Jemma Harris is named I have Oh I'm sorry, she departed the
team, and then other members of the Goddess team have moved on to the
Trial. That in itself doesn't bother me, because like, if he's if
he's like mister Molly, you big old idea man, that he can just
deliver a document and say like, this is what I think should be in
this game. Make it. This is my part of Goddess. Go yeah,
okay, well tell tell me if this bothers you, okay. Core
designer Conrad Nazinski made this comment about the state of Goddess to be brutally candidate
and realistic. I simply can't see us delivering all the features promised on the
Kickstarter page. A lot of the multiplayer stuff is looking serious shaky right now,
especially the persistent stuff like the hub world. Goddess is rather confused right
now. It plays like an ongoing persistent game without real endpoints, and yet
it's divided up into discrete levels. This is one of the big decisions we
will need to make in the next couple of weeks. And again, realistically,
I'm having to ask myself, how good can we turn what Goddess is
right now into a good, complete experience, rather than how can we deliver
on the Kickstarter pitch goals. Yeah, we are in the process of reevaluating
the big picture direction of and end goal of Goddess. It's not an easy
or straightforward task, but I'll let you know when I can. So like
on its own, no problems with that, right, that sounds like games
in development, like shit will happen. It's only when you take it in
the context of we set all this shit in order to raise money from the
public and did it in an extremely public way, and now we're backing away
from it, that it becomes a problem. Like they they both launched like
a really crazy and not a legal problem, and it sounds like they have
no actual you know, to you know, kickstarters fail think things. Yeah,
yeah, there won't be any accountability there that I'm aware of. But
that's what I wonder about with with kickstarters. Let's say they just don't make
the game and they don't ever release it. I mean, is there any
like they don't return the money, like did they money and what happened?
Yeah? I mean so it's so basically that is just something you have to
worry about when you back in your kickstarter. Is not pre ordering a thing?
Yeah, so there is a good charity. That's why they have the
risks and challenges section of a of a kickstarter. Now they didn't have it
originally, but it's like, Okay, what are some things that could come
up? They could totally derail your project? And they have to be like,
well, I mean we've scoped out what we think the size of this
thing is going to be. But it could always you know, we could
encounter weird bugs. We this could happen, This could happen, This could
happen. Yeah, it's a it's a donation. Yeah, it's a donation
with rewards for for backing it. It's not a pre order. But you
are not guaranteed anything. No, no, no. But in this case,
they ran a highly publicized promotional campaign with that stupid cube app. They
traded on the kind of legendary name of Malannu to further hype this thing up,
right, Like, you know, they kind of put a lot out
there in good faith to get people to to contribute money these things. You
know, I think there are plenty of people doing right by Kickstarter and and
you know, putting out their games. Stuff gets delayed because that that just
happens. But like people are raising money and turning out products and making good
on their goals and some some good games are coming out of it, and
more over a lot of types of games that wouldn't get made otherwise. Yeah,
but but for Molineu and the people at twenty two cans. The only
real consequence that they can possibly face is damage reputations, right right, you
like severely damage reputation. Well, I mean, if you think about,
like, you know, the kind of the joke that has surrounded Malaneu over
this, you know, over this last generation or two ever since the first
fable, i'd say, yeah, you know, like before that, before
that, before like at least as far back as Black and White. Oh
yeah, I remember, I remember a huge outcry over Black and White when
it came out. Yeah, yeah, I remember being severely disappointed. I
really liked what it was. I still think it was an an okay game.
But it's like, this isn't at all you could pick up the bills
and fling him into the ocean yep when they angered you. I mean,
his reputation is already like pretty tattered. This seems like it's been like a
running gag for a long time. But you're at that point now where it's
like the gag hasn't necessarily been funny for a while, and now that you
can kind of like backtrace this into people giving them money based on which is
not probably not too different than what Maman who has been doing his entire career
of going in there pitching his game to whoever holds the purse strings at a
Microsoft or and EA or whatever, promising them the fucking world, and then
you know, pivoting three or four times over the course development. It's like
the Rock Paper Shotgun interview makes it sound like that's how he's conducted himself this
whole time. The only difference now is that it's he's conducted it in a
very public way and secured money from individuals out there that are getting kind of
taken for the first time, where someone like EA probably got taken a handful
of times. It doesn't surprise me, though, because I have never met
anyone in this industry that is better at trying at selling you on his vision
or like his genuine enthusiasm for something, even if like like I didn't really
like People three that much. I didn't even finish it, Yeah, but
I remember like interviewing him in like twenty ten for it or whatever, and
like he is one of the most naturally charismatic talkers I've ever seen. Like
you just want to buy whatever that guy's selling because you believe that he believes
in that project. And I expect that he probably fully does. Yeah,
I have no reason to doubt that. But you know, like like I
don't think he's up there trying to go like no at all, let's get
on money bull Yeah, but you know, I think it's that. But
you know, dreaming big is one thing, but then going and executing on
the dreams is quite another. Yeah, you know, and he may not
be able to hold up that end of it as well. You know,
I feel like buying large the games that he's been associated with haven't necessarily been
bad. I think Goddess Is is a pretty bad game right now. I
don't know if it would never be good, but like, you know,
the stuff that Lion had did, the Frog stuff, like generally speaking,
you know, whether it's true to the original vision or not, Like the
games are still pretty good. Yeah, and he's tried a lot of shit,
like like a lot of new ideas have come out of his games,
whether they worked or not. You know. So it's just one of those
things like this thing just becomes nasty because it's happening in public, because Kickstarter
is involved. Well, yeah, it's happening in public, and also people's
like a lot of individual people's money is on the line exactly as opposed to
a big facefus corporation, which can you afford to write off losses and stuff
like that. And you know, granted probably most people put in like fifteen
twenty bucks or whatever, it's not going to ruin anybody, but it's still
you know, I think I saw Chris Kohler from Wired put it really well
on Twitter, I think, where he said something along the lines of basically,
Kickstarter is not a pre order and Kickstarter creators should be held to account
or not like mutually exclusive ideas totally, like you should know going in you're
not necessarily going to get jack shit out of the money you put in the
Kickstarter. But at the same time, people who promise things and get a
bunch of money for it should be accountable to that to some degree. Yes,
you know, absolutely so, I don't know, we're does that leave
us like the Kickstarter free money train I think is super weird? It always
has been. Yeah, it's yeah, I mean we get I am constantly
inundated from people that are in desperate points in their Kickstarter campaigns just trying to
get people to write about it. And I was like, no, yeah,
it makes it. It makes it hard to the point that like,
even if there's something you see that you think looks really cool and would like
to talk about and put eyes on, like you kind of can't. I
can't, you know, It's like I can. You know. It's like
I've become a fairly decent judge of pre released products over the past couple of
decades. I've seen a lot of them. But even still, just like
watching someone's pitch video, You're like, I don't even know if this is
real. I could be a hexan mod for all I know. I'd back
that. Yeah, it's a miss. This whole thing is a mess.
Yeah, and this is not even And then didn't he give multiple interviews where
each one he said, this is my final interview. I think I think
they're released two where he said I'm done talking about there was there was the
now from this Rock Paper Shotgun interview, which I have not read and its
entirety, and I believe the interview he gave following that one is the one
where you said I'm done. I'm want to say there was at least one
after he said he was done. Yeah, that's the one with the Guardian.
That's what I'm talking about. Well, no, maybe you're right.
I don't know if I can't keep up with the bread crunch trail, but
I don't know what is It's like they you know, he's he's been out
there talking about this stuff a little bit, and like, you know,
the time frame that he gives for god us coming together into something resembling what
it's supposed to be is quote months and months and months. So well that's
not years and years and years. Well it could be. I guess it
could be get enough months together it turns into years. Wait a minute,
I don't want to alarm you. He's fun in me here. Uh yeah,
you know, there's it's in the wake of that interview, it turned
into a whole different, ugly thing. Yeah, that's gotten even nastier and
became difficult to keep track of everything that was being said. At some point
interview. I would be curious to which it's it's. It seems it comes
across as extremely standoffish. Uh you know, go over to rock paper shot,
going to read it's it's it's interesting regardless, I'm not gonna, you
know, weigh in on there's the total appropriate or not, because I don't
know I don't. I don't really know him Alan. I don't know either
the parties involved, And I would be interested to hear if there was an
audio recording of that, if it actually is as tense and crazy as the
text the texts scrant transcript makes it sound, or if they're like they've known
each other for a while and on some level they're kind of fun and but
kind of serious, or you know, whatever it is. But I think
it's hard to kind of weigh in on that without knowing that piece of it.
But regardless, I mean, yeah, that goddess is not a quality
product at the moment, and you know, will it ever become one?
Like I don't think so who can say? And who knows what's will become
of mal New's reputation well and career. But like you know, if you
look like you talk about his reputation, but like you know, it's not
like he was gonna like how many companies would be willing to like do business
with Malan New, you know, post lion Head and stuff like that.
I mean, he probably wouldn't start his own company because it's not like no
one's lining up to give him enough money to start a new studio and fund
a whole new project. At this point, he's done it enough times to
enough different companies that at some point they're probably like, you know, and
that's we like Peter, We like that he you know, he's he's a
great face for this stuff, and we can bring him out and do this,
but the some of the things that come along with it maybe not worth
the investment. And and you know, at some point you gotta get out
on your own, because yes, it's the only way it's gonna go,
right Yeah, but you know, after this hubbub, like, it's hard
to see how he could turn into crowdfunding again. Totally exactly, Yeah,
I mean, yo, yes, I mean, who's gonna back a Molan
new project again after this? Right? That? That's your you know,
which is why it's doubly crazy to hear that he's starting up yet another new
project right now, right right, because because a thing you said you were
going to do wasn't done yet, and be where's the money from going to
come from for that? But who knows? Time will tell. I suppose
not much to do if you back to got us at this point, but
sit back and wait, Yeah, I guess, yeah, it's crazy times.
Yeah, uh, you know what else is crazy? Sony says,
the Last Guardian is still in development. Wasn't there. I saw a bunch
of tweets recently saying that yes, trademark ran out again or whatever, but
so yeah, I was. I was about to put that story in the
list of news for this week, but then Sony had just followed up.
So yeah, the big headline was like, oh, Sony, let the
Last Guardian trademark lapse. It's it's done. I feel like that headline is
popped up like every two or three years. All this was different because they've
always renewed it, but this time they basically abandoned it. They had like
their two month window to renew it or whatever, and someone forgotten did not
I forgot to say, no, we're still doing that. So yeah,
they Sony came out and said yes, A, yes, we're still making
the game. B It was an administrative issue or something to that effect that
supposedly allowed if the trademark two laps. But that's kind of all there is
to say there. It was a good twelve sixteen hours of people going ape
shit, like oh God, they're finally killing it, and then here they
come again saying Yep, we're still making it. It'll come out. Fucking
what is it? Who's making it? I don't know. It doesn't matter.
It matters insofar as I would like them to release it so we can
move on with our lives. It's like it's just straight up Duke. It
is absolutely Duke of them forever. But hopefully this will be a good game.
I don't know. I'm gonna guess it'll be out by holiday. Hopefully
every game is a good game. Never like they never ever want a game
to be bad, Yeah, because you know, every if more games are
good, everybody benefits. Like it's insane for people to go like, why
would you want it to be bad? Like, you don't want it to
be bad, but if it is bad, you might as well at least
derive some entertainment value from its release. So this is the Duke forever or
Chinese Democracy of the industry, right, sure, kind of. I'm gonna
guess I think it's hard with this one because I feel like they haven't shown
enough of it. For there's only status for a handful of trailers. Because
he had Duke had a bunch of E three trailers come back like what ninety
seven or something. Yeah, I mean Duke was in oh what was it.
Duke's in development for god like twelve years or something before it finally came
out over fourteen. I want to say, like, this only got announced
five years ago, six five, six, two thousand and nine is when
it was announced. Seen, it feels like we've been living with the Last
Guardian a lot longer. Yes, yeah, all you're saying Holiday twenty seventeen,
that's where my money's gone. I can bet twenty seventeen, Holiday twenty
seventeen. I'm not gonna make a bet for something that might not happen for
years and years, because who knows it will be out in calendar year twenty
seventeen. I would I'm gonna say twenty sixteen. You sound really confidable about
that. Oh, I would say twenty sixteen if I had to, if
I had to put money on it, that would be my guests, because
they have to look at you have to look at the timetable by which they've
been talking about it as a thing that like, oh no, we're just
waiting to reintroduce it. We have some stuff in mind like that. Look
at that dev cycle, like that was Day one twenty sixteen makes sense.
I mean, you know, re announced that the three released this holiday is
not out out of the realm, and I think it could be out this
year absolutely. Yeah, I like that. We all seem pretty confident though
that it'll be out within the next couple of years. That that's good.
I don't think it's every coming again. All right, Drew's the one in
the center here, Okay, that would be really disappointed. Yeah. Again,
we don't know enough about it. I guess on some level, but
is it even that game anymore? Because on some level you're like, that's
what I'm saying. I want the people that made Eco to make more games
because that was a legendary game. Blah blah blah blah blah. And then
but is it still that No? Well, so I was gonna say,
like, you know, uh waita said Fumi Toda, who is the kind
of the guy the director has in the past, said that his contribution to
the project was completed quote a long time ago, and then he gave an
interview in December. I guess, so far as he's concerned, it was
a persistent world god game where you tap on the collems to make dots appear,
and he was like, fuck it, I'm making this other thing now.
So I guess In an interview that he gave in December, he said
that development of the game was moving forward under quote completely new conditions. So
whether that means it moved from PS three to PS four or it's referring more
to the group of people working on it, right, Yeah, point Sony
steps in and says we've put a lot of Yeah, Buckethead comes out,
yeah, and says we've put a lot of money into this project. You
need to step the fuck aside so we can do our jobs. Possible,
Yeah, maybe, very possible. I mean when you think about like,
you know, it's just a japan studio, just like a lot of the
stuff coming out of Sony's Japanese arm has been weird lately, you know,
you look at the earthquake. You know, it's like all kinds of stuff
that has happened over those last five years or however long it's been. Yeah,
I mean I said it would be disappointing if it didn't come out,
and you said, really, Uh, to clarify, I have abandoned any
expectations that the game will be good. Yeah, I just want to know
what it turns out to be, Like, it would be very disappointing to
never see an end result from yes, like at some point it's more of
a historical curiosity or a novelty, yeah, than it is like, Oh,
I think this game is gonna be amazing and like the like the you
know, kind of creative embodiment of one man's vision or whatever. You know,
like this thing may have been deluded eighteen times, and this one you
hold hands with the monsters. They're combining both, Okay, but when the
monster gets to level three, man's just gonna hold both of his hands unbeatable.
Yeah, you know it just it would be nice for there to be
some kind of coda to this dumb saga. I do like that we still
have these mythical beings. Yeah, you gotta have at least one that didn't
give it time, you know, Matt half Live three. Yeah. Yeah,
I guess that video games continue to be difficult to make. You want
to put your you want to put calendar year on half five three? Nope,
Holiday twenty seventeen, nope. Fucking come on, man, it's gonna
be a big holiday. See Valve. Valve doesn't give a shit about holiday
releases. Twenty seventeen calendar year. I will agree with you that twenty seventeen
seems like the right year. Okay, all right, but it's twenty fifteen
now right, Yeah, yeah, that's fear. Yeah, I'm gonna say
twenty seventeen, cool with you? Cool, all right, okay. And
it will not be announced ahead of time. It will just come out.
It's gonna be bro home. We're gonna get a press release and then like
a week later it's out. Seven will just get like an email from Doug
Lombardi saying like, hey, half Live three's out. I don't know.
That'd be awesome. I would love that. Are you guys? Are you
guys sold on it being Half Life three? I think it'd be way funnier
if they just finally put out a Half Life two episode three four same source
engines because they did say it was going to be a trilogy of episodes,
right, did they say? I don't know what they said. I'm positively
announcement. There's a specific talk from people at Valve where they use terms like
episode three yeah, and I want to say that. There was also a
specific talk after that saying like yeah, the episodic modeling. Oh, like
they had said publicly like we're not going to do that again. Yeah,
maybe not interesting, Okay, I don't know at this point. That's a
hard paper trail to especially like the reported stuff and unreported stuff. It's like
all this stuff in the middle, like it's a lot of weird ship that's
absolutely true. Also, I will say, just like Duke Forever and Last
Guardian, Half Life three is more of a curiosity to me at this point
that anything I actually want to play, absolutely just like I will play it.
I'm curious to see what it is, but kind of don't care anymore.
I'm not a yes, I want to believe I have a healthy,
distant respect for Half Life that is completely detected. You want to make it
so good, you want to make another one good, you want to not
make another one good. I don't care. Yeah, make it. Do
what you want to do, do something. Half Life one hugely important to
the history video games. Half Life two a very good game that is consistently
kind of overrated by everybody except for me. Physics, it is important.
The physics of Half Life two important, but like it was not a fucking
ce change the way that the Half Life one was no Like Half Life one
was like, here is a structure that you have never fucking seen in the
first person shooter before. Guess I don't know, Like here is an entire
new way of telling a story in this type of action game that has never
been done. At the time, I had the fucking went for it again.
Maybe it's just a virtue of me not liking the game that much.
But at no point playing Half Life one was I like, this is driving
things forward. I was just like, man, it's no okay, shooter,
Sin did it? Yeah, I want to talk about a game Sin.
Look, I love Sin. Come on, I can't it Jeff,
alright, fair enough, But yeah, I don't know. At no point
playing Half Life one was I likely did I feel like the whole time playing
Half Life two, I was like, this is amazing. Yeah it was.
I mean, yeah, it was a really impressive game, but it
was more incremental than the first one, you know, in terms of kind
of what it added to the genre anyway, But I forget the genre,
like I think Half Live two is importance has nothing to do with shooters and
all that sort of stuff, Like yeah, whatever, it had this open
world vehicle bullshit, pacing stuff. It's it's literally the physics. It's what
that game did for physics that then everyone did in every game after that.
Like, that's the stuff, uh that that is important about Half Live two
still, and I'd say that stuff to me in two games that that followed,
I'd say, that's more important than what Half Life one did. Are
you saying without Half Life two, there's no psy ops? Yea all right
case, just make it sure here, Okay, now I hear what you're
saying. Last already out, that will come out sometime. Let's move on
a four. Yeah, all right, our last and most important story.
I want to hear each of your hot ideas. And I know you've been
sitting on for years for the following ips GEX an acronox or fear effect.
What is the second one? You've never heard of? An acronox. It's
a real time strategy game that I on Storm. It's an RPG, it's
a JPG. It's uh so, Tom Hall, one of the guys who
made Doom left and went to Eye on Storm was the RTS Didion Storm.
That was God's Dominion Storm over Gifts seven. I believe just read all kinds
of weird shit about if you dig in to that Dallas Observer article from years
ago, right, uh, an Acronox was Tom Hall's kind of love letters
to Japanese RPGs built with the Quake two engine. Was it PC only?
Yes? Okay, everything he just said explains why I have not heard of
that. Did it? Ever? It never came out on an I don't
think it did. But yeah, they basically gets on sixty four, the
Predio game that eventually came to other They made numerous GUS games, but only
only one in that Secret Agent GEX entered the Gecko. There Graham in one,
or just a girl that looked like Heather Grahm. They never selling it,
and there's a girl on the thing. Danta Gould was the voice of
GEX. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I was on numerous systems. He
had sunglasses. Yep. He was a Gecko. He was. He was
the Geico Lizard, but a video game character. You know. GEX was
a platform. The mascot also ran yeah in the area in an era that
was rotten with lover post Bubsy world. Yes. Uh. The reason I
bring this up is that Square Enix is out there taking pitches for people's ideas
about what to do with these properties Gus versus air, four skaters, five
pitch m They don't meet, They don't mention any any cross licensing, trans
media opportunities. I gotta stay with N square. So you might be uh,
might be sol on that one is there? Does anybody want new Gux
games or even fear for that matter, Come up with a great new guess
idea and maybe they will. Like Fear Effect is a thing that, like
at the time, was very interesting and had an edge to it that a
lot of games didn't have. But I remember it's marketing campaign was Yeah,
I don't I know, I know very little about Fear Effect. They were
playing up the sex angle, like, yeah, elevator scene, all that
sort of. All I remember was their shitty marketing campaign. I don't even
know anything about what the second one. I think the second ones where they
really ramped up that stuff. I think. So, I think you're right,
But I feel like there's nothing to pull from all right, mean whatever,
not to say there are no stories and things to that game, but
like making a new Fear Effect, like you might as well as be starting
over. Yeah, I feel like the brand affinity is barely there. I
feel like it would be like when they made spec Ops the line and it
was like, do you really need spec Ops on there? It would be
a lot like that. Yeah, whereas like Gus, everyone knows Gus's staying
gould Up too. I don't know. I don't know. That's a good
question. Is he still on Simpsons? No, he's on there for a
long time writing. Oh I think he's long gone from that. Okay,
so he's pretty good live. Yeah, I've seen him. He's good.
Yeah, he's maybe better than a lot of people give him credit for.
Uh. So there are a lot of steps in between here, but but
generally, the idea is your picture idea to square. They put it up
vote if it gets enough attention and they like it. What wait, they're
building some kind of fucking reality show around this bullshit They're they're putting it in
front of the community to vote on, almost like a steam green light type
thing. From the sound of Okay, Gus crash lands on a planet and
a spaceship splits into a bunch of different parts. How h he came from
the planet Gexitron. I'm liking this and uh, he has to go around
uh and find a piece of a spaceship and then find an elevator, and
then that elevator takes him to a different plane. So this is a reboot
to reimagine going going back to the origin story of the lizard. Yeah,
I can't tell if you're referencing Pickman or grow Home because both of them kind
of have the similar brand new No, if you fall down, there's a
hot tub. All right, if you fall down, there's a hot tub.
I'm in. I'm sold. Is it limited? Yes? The hell
are you guys talking about tomatoes? I would probably take Guts and just insert
him into a pastiche or a melding of a ton of different Final Fantasy games,
like re envisioned Final Fantasy stories, but have guts somehow leaving his way
through the cannon, inserting himself into these situations. And why is cracking about
how dumb they all was? That always was like it was kind of media
parody, always the guess gimmick or was that only later on? I feel
like one of them he was one game specifically, I think was that it
wasn't always it was like surfing through tannels and stuff and like getting inserted them
different movies and stuff. Yeah, okay, Yeah, so I would I
would do that. That That is my pitch. All right, So that's
the Final Fantasy seven remake we get, yes, exactly, you you re
you redo a lot of Final Fantasy seven assets in New High Rez. But
it's for a fucking guess game. Like they put the full budget they would
put towards an actual remake of seven. But you have to play a game
I want to fucking twenty minutes summon animation that at the end of it's just
a bigger lizard. Well, unfortunately for you, squar is not willing to
put any money against these ideas. Oh fantastic because once you go through yeah,
like what, once you go through this process of having the community vet
your idea and then having them sign off on it, and you actually get
to the point that they're gonna let you make the game you want to make.
Yeah, you have to go crowdfunded? Fuck you wait? What off?
Yes, if the response is good, then it's onto crowdfunding, which
no doubt begs an important question. Why ask gamers to pay for a game
to be made if it's using our ip Well, because it was still we're
too scared. Well here's the I mean, yeah, so well, because
it will still be the responsibility of the independent developer to build the game,
and the developer will still be the key beneficiary of its success. I don't
know if you guys care about percentages, I can keep going. On the
business side, We'll still take five percent of net crowdfunds raised, assuming the
initial target is reached, and we will also distribute the game when it's done.
For that, we take the standard distribution fee of ten percent net sales
revenue, but will also charge a ten percent license fee for the use of
the IP And obviously we'll have more involvement in the direction of development because let's
fake it. Sorry, let's face it. We want to make sure the
game that's released is the game that's promised. So like I liked it,
it's written in a very standard language of like, let's face it, this
thing's fuck. Let's face it. We're being crazy. Let's face it.
We want to taste at the front and the back. I mean, the
way they sum it up is that that means the developer will keep eight percent
of the net revenue from sales of the game. And who knows, maybe
we'll be interested in licensing a c quel as well. Who knows. Wait,
so do you pitch the idea and they develop it or do you have
to have a development team ready to make the idea? No, I think
that's all on you. So like, if I want to do that,
I would have to have a developer pitching stuff. But it's not enough.
Like this is this is like the equivalent of like them doing g DC meetings
but doing it on their fucking message boards. But you still need to develop
the game yourself. And best case scenario, I get twenty percent, which
is like you get to use the guest's name. They're skimming, they're skimming
five percent of the crowd funds and then they're taking so specifically those three ips
where they just like use those as examples of just like we have a lot
of fucking dumb ship. Oh, they specifically list out those three ips Urban
Chaos, and they say, we have more ips than we may open up
in the future, but we'll start with these and see what the response is.
Like, So, what is your favorite lapsed IDOS franchise and the like
see come Back Kane and Lynch. There you go. By time, they
made a third one of those, they do backyard wrestling, They did doc
Yeah, yeah, yeah, there you go. No, no, no,
don't want to bring the i CP out of retirement and want to care
about legacy of Kine anymore. Uh, I don't do. They're still doing
that. They made something like weird multiplayer Scotty is said in that universe is
yeah, never gonna come out. I think I think it's like still in
beta. Okay, I'm not sure specifically. It's a weird thing. You
know, the Genesis version of Strider two. I think that's technically oddos a
US gold or something. Is that the same game as the PlayStation Strider two?
Okay, because the PlayStation Strider two is really good. Yeah, that
was an arcade game. Originally it was like all kind of official and on
the up and up. This was like they licensed out and had some other
people make it. This like the Snake's Revenge. Yeah, okay, Yeah,
this is an odd thing. Yeah, that's a really weird, really
curious, really weird thing for Square to do. Yeah, really curious to
see what games, if any, come out of this this thing. I
should let people do, like a New Day of Sex game. People might
actually want that. Yeah, that name is probably way too too valuable to
just turn over. Well, what I is, what I was getting at
there is that they are probably doing that and should just fucking do that maybe,
if I mean, assuming they already are, like get on with it.
Oh well, it's probably happening anyway you would think, you would think.
But at the same time, it feels like that enough time has passed
that they like the heat they gained by that games, that last game's popularity
isn't there as much, and I'm like, what three plus years since I
came out, like they'd be able to rekindle some of it, like all
right, day sex that last one was cool. Well, you know,
they did Thief in the interim and that didn't go as well. So right,
Uh, we'll see what happens with the stuff. But if you have
any good ideas for these properties, you can email Collective at squaredash innex dot
com with the ideas. Meanwhile, you can email BombCast at giant bomb dot
com if you have any emails for this podcast. I had to like that
one. Yeah, if you want to. If you want to pitch the
following ips, send us your ideas, for which you will surrender to crowdfund
money for t n T. Send us for pitches some of your ideas for
which you will surrender in on all ownership exactly. We own every email,
the kind of stuff such as this one from Jason Halo mcc still broken.
Frowny face. What do I do with my Xbox One? Not play fucking
Halo? Yeah? If you bought an Xbox One to play hold Halo games,
you fucked up. They make machines to play those that may and that
it may in fact be the case. Here hey bombcasts Jason from Illinois.
Here, I bought the one to play the Ship out of Halo master Chief
Collection. You're fucked up all right? Sadly that game is still pretty broken
and at this point I don't even want to play it. Is there anything
coming out soon that is worth playing? Or should I take the loss and
sell my system? Did you play Sunset Overdrive? Yeah? There's some good
games out there, some more promising looking games coming. I mean, you
know, if you if you're that big a Halo fan that you bought a
system to play old Halo games, you probably want to hang onto it for
New Halo for less than a year when you can play. Yeah, New
Halo is my is my feeling, especially if you got it at the discounted
price. But who knows. But yeah, you know, I mean you
might as well have a console, right, Yes, you might as well
have the console. Five percent of games are coming out on both consoles these
days, so you might as well have one of them, I suppose,
and get your Halo later on. There's not a lot of eventually in that
response. I guess that, yeah, there will be a Crackcown eventually,
you could play Cold Decept. Those forts of games seem to be going pretty
well. Phantom Dust Anthom Dust just coming. Sorry, Phantom Dust and not
Cold Aceept same thing. I don't know, I will both come out.
What are video games? We're confirming here exclusively an Acronox is coming, but
mayan Acronox. Did you see they canceled the beta for the next patch for
Master Chief Collection. Did you see that they were offering a beta for They
see that they were looking to beta tests, so they were going to members
of the Xbox Preview program. Yes, they have now canceled that initiative.
They will not be I don't know, they will not be beta testing the
patch, like when when they said they were going to beta test a patch
that looked bad somehow retracting that looks even worse. I don't even know what,
Like, what the fuck is going on over there? Got me?
Man? You got me? I bet most of the three four three is
very hard to work on ALA five right now. Yeah, they don't have
time to fuck around with those ship. Who knows what is happening with the
game that already came out and was busted? Hey, anybody fixed that yet?
Fix what? And the Halo? Yeah, I mean the beta went
well. We're working on Yeah, with the multiplayer beta was great. We're
working on the old one. We're like five months. It's away from content
complete, like all the old ones, they're all broken. What then not
do the work? If this game's all one games of the year in their
respective release, it's called Bungee. I leave us alone. We're working on
Halo. They want to answer, they want to return my calls. Yeah,
what a surprise. It's a deplorable situation. Uh. Mark from Moncton,
New Brunswick monkedin. Yes, how you say that? He writes down
about Mortal Kombat tens, brutalities, babalities and fashion trophies. Yeah, I
like everything this guy is proposing. Last week, you guys talked about Mortal
Kombat. I'm sorry, did I say ten? I don't remember, I
say X. Okay, last week you guys talked about MK X, and
the ensuing discussion got me thinking. One brutality is maybe lame, but if
they use them with the X ray feature, you could see each bone individually
break and explode into nine rib cages. That would look cool. Yes,
but only if each bone somehow miraculously transforms into a rib cage. Oh.
Absolutely no, I think that's that's the whole point here. You're getting like,
yeah, three or three to five complete skeletons out of each character at
some point. That's value minded. I like that. Two. The faction
rewards will probably be stuff like backgrounds. But what would you like to have?
I'm thinking the characters could wear a crown like in Mario three d land
or they bleed gold blood or something. I want custom fatalities like design your
own fatality. No, like like faction specific fatality? Oh oh you like
the exclusive ones that you can only use while your faction is ahead or whatever?
Yeah? Interesting, any character could be in any faction, right,
yes? Okay? And three, considering the last MK game had babalities and
this one takes place twenty five years later. Could it be possible that some
characters got babalified and that would explain why they still look so young. If
any series was going to do something that's stupid, they would do that.
This character got turned into a baby in our last game and is a full
is a as a young adult again. Would be way more into the idea
that you do a baybality to old ass Kung Lao and he turns into MK.
Yeah, that's also pretty good. This is the series that took a
guy on fire in the background on a bridge and turned him into a playable
character, Blaze. People did that Blaze. It was all like the horn
Buckle fucking ship, what are you talking about? Like the name of that
that was there was like the other Luke Kang. It was like, it's
just names Hornbuckle. Everyone knows that and like no, no, but they
the guy on fire and the bridge on the pit two back there. It
was in one of the later ones, like Armageddon or something, there was
a character named Blaze, and I think his like official lore as he was
that guy that was on fire back. Maybe it is. I mean,
fucking mocap was a character, right, yeah, meat, they took a
glitch and turned her into a DLC real character, that character, and I
love how that series does stupid shit and just with a smile on their face.
It's the best. Yeah yeah, some of that stuff. All right,
sure, it's a great series, Uh neil from a town in Washington
that I'm going to pronounce yallop? Sure did you get that like that?
Probably don't wait? Uh wright Son about car hacking Comma airplane Quality. Regarding
last week's discussion on what to call hacking your car, he suggests ebreaking as
in b r okaka. All right, yeah, yeah, that's a good
one. Also, I wanted to let you know that I've shared the podcast
with quite a few co workers over the last few years. We work in
the aerospace industry around Seattle. Next time you get on a plane, you
can rest easy knowing your standard of quality and dedication have inspired and motivated us.
All right, great, thanks for that frightening uh Josh and Athens Georgia.
Right, there's a lot of great airplane museums up there. I believe
it just take a few more days, do it? Josh and Athens,
Georgia. Right. Son about Trusted reviewers, Dear Bomb guys. For a
long time, the Bomb crew solution to review subjectivity has been that gamers find
one or more reviewers whose opinions parallel their own and rely upon their views.
And with the crew all chiming in on the BombCast, that was easy to
do. I found that guy on your staff. But then you vanished Vinny
to the barren wasteland and I am once again runnerless. But the splitter jib
on, have you guys reconsidered a staff take section on reviews where we can
see what game of each of the I'm sorry, let me try it again,
where we can see what each of the staff thought about any particular game
they've played, summarized in a handful of sentences. I mean, isn't that
what we're doing on the podcast? Kind of yeah, I think he's asking
for something a little more formalized that would kind of I don't know, this
comes up every every few months or years, you know, It's like something
that would kind of sit alongside a main review kind of yeah. I mean,
we have the ability to do that in the system right now. It's
just it's not really a priority at this point. We have At this point
everything we do has an opinion attached to it. Yeah, uh so,
like that stuff kind of gets out there and the quick looks and yeah,
across the board, and in a lot of cases, getting that stuff out
there in the context of a review in a timely manner is not really life
possible. Yeah. Yeah, you know, like we don't we get a
copy. Yeah, more often than not we get one copy of the game
before release. And you know, even if we had him, a lot
of people don't have time to play through the game. It's not like the
old review crew days were like four people who could play a whole game before
you know, it gets to print or something. Games were shorter and those
guys had a month to fuck around to do nothing before they had to go
to print. Yeah uh so it's a nice thought, but it's pretty hard
to pull off. Anthony in San Antonio writes in about John Romero's eBay activity.
John Romero is advertising his eBay listings for metal CDs and seventy eight hundred
games via Twitter. What the fuck was advertising? Because I just went and
bought all that shit. No, I didn't, but that's pretty awesome.
I would buy some seven months from John. I might go look at the
stuff Romero is selling and see that's that that makes me feel more than a
little creepy. But I I don't care. If you go to his profile,
can you see also what he has bet on M I don't know,
it'd be fun. I don't know. He's what has John Romero bought from
eBay? Sure? Also, why why would a guy like Romero want to
get rid of seventy eight hundred games? It seems like something you'd want to
hang on to promise doesn't need him? Yeah? Maybe? Uh? Johan
and Sweden, as a question inspired by the Quake live segment on upf Yes
got him thinking, did Jeff ever play the id cross Interscope collaboration map where
you got doctor Dre and Eminem skins and music to use? Yes, because
that was some magic cross media strategy was considering. It was the fucking considering.
It was fucking the year two thousand and cross media was barely fucking invented.
He's really riled up about the subject. Yeah, it's yeah, I
am too, we all are. How did they distribute that thing? Was
just a free promotional thing, and the Eminem model just had was giving a
middle finger. The whole time with one of the holding the gun. Was
it like a Chronic two thousand and one thing. There was just different music
that would play different spots in the level and you'd run around and like,
I just forgot about dre in the background. Actually I was playing on that
level at some point last year that the map was ported to, like Xenotic
and some of these other source port games, uh that that are based on
those engines, And you can still get in there and do and then load
it up. All right, maybe I put play it at n Io Quake
three. I forget exactly, but but at some point I was on that
map and it's not a great map. No, does it have any custom
art? Like does it still? Yes, it looks like the streets it
has billboards for the album and stuff around. Okay, well ableast they went
all the way with it. Yeah, No, it's it's it was a
really fucking weird thing that they did. What was the music included? Was
it just straight up cuts from the album? Cuts from the album, like
like shortened, looped, and then like if you ran into the club in
the level the song was playing, and you know, as you ran away
from it, it would you know, fade out magic, pure magic.
I would love to know how that thing came about. Yeah, who was
running interscope at the time, Jimmy, I mean I figured big quick guy.
Yeah. I was gonna say maybe his kids were in the quake or
something. Who knows. Looking forward to quake by Dre, it's gonna be
very huge. Yep, weird stuff. Uh, Kyle, Yes, traversal
in open world games, you're not Kyle. No, you can't fool me,
Sup, bomb squads up? You know. Oh, I've been mostly
playing open world games lately because every game is an open world game lately.
How do you guys feel about fast travel? In terms of game design?
It's convenient, sure, But in games in which getting around is actually fun.
I find Farkry four it's buzzer to be fun to fly around in,
for example, I rarely use fast travel. Do you think fast travel is
overused and gives developers an excuse to have a pretty bland open world At some
point it just removes the open world element because you're only going to mandated locations.
I think, you know, like he brought he brought up Parkry four,
and I think it does a good job of there's enough stuff off the
beaten Path that you can't just fast travel too. They're like, you know,
I use fast travel, but I also use the buzzer a whole bunch.
Yeah, you know, the little locations that are marked on the map
with collectibles and stuff like, they do give you some incentive. Yeah,
it's to roam around. But I still fast travel like a mother in that
game. I do it in everything, and I can believe in their skyram
or fall out or anything, as long as you go by the rule of
like, well, if you've gotten there on foot or via vehicle or horse
or whatever it may be, then yes you can travel there. But yeah,
give me stuff off the beaten path, so I can't explorer, get
on the horse and red dead and look around or whatever. Dying Light is
a weird outlier, yeah, recently in that it's an open world game that
does not let you fast travel, I found that to be frustrating. I've
kind of come to appreciate it in a way. But I'm like MAXI level
on everything practically at this point, and I'm just fucking booking through the city
anyway, so it kind of doesn't matter, and it lets you run into
a lot more of the little like kind of ambient events that happened and stuff
like that. I get why you would not have it in a game like
that, and also why that could work. The world map in that game
is kind of small enough, that's not really the end of the world.
Also, the game is designed in such a way that you don't really need
to go back to that area you started in. Then there's no reason to
do it boring entire map traversal. Sure, I'm trying to remember. Could
did Bullie have a fast travel because I remember liking spending a lot of time
just kind of like biking around that talent and stuff because it was small enough
and there are all these fun little ways to get around, and I don't
remember. I don't think it did. I feel like I just rode my
bike around a lot. Yeah, you might be right. I think it's
great. I'll take your forward for it. It's great. I don't think
I'm ever gonna played at this point. You never played Bully. I've bought
it twice. I think it's so good. I went on Steam and then
I think I bought it again on three played the Steam version recently, and
the controller stuff is a little weird. Some of it it might be a
little hard to go back to. I thought repeatedly about like playing it on
the site or something. The three sixty one is really good. That's when
I went back to a couple of years ago and played through again. Still
good, I've got that one, bullying bread. I'll keep thinking about it.
Watched fucked up, That's what it was. Broke, was it?
Yeah? See I played. I remember reviewing the original PS two one when
it came out, and then not getting scholarship edition right away. No,
I think I reviewed the we one of that, which whatever, and then
a few years later it's like, you know what, I just want to
play the three sixty one, and so I guess they had ironed out whatever
was sucked up about it. So yeah, I probably played through that like
three times. It's great. The early parts of that game, we have
to go to class and stuff like kind of dragged for me going back to
it. I kind of like the novelty of these stupid little mini games and
stuff. Yeah, no, like like I thought that stuff was fine.
It was just like they kind of hammer you with it up front a lot
that I don't want to do this right now. Ye understandable. It's charming.
Yeah, I'm probably not pronouncing this right, but Jacob from Poland,
that's probably not not familiar with Theatan's now it's of Polish, okay. Anyway,
trying to get about Game of the Generation M. I've been waiting for
a year now since Driving game M. Yeah, sure, don't stay tuned.
I've been waiting for a year now since current gen began. But where
is Game of the Generation? I know Jeff will probably pick Burnout Paradise,
but I would love a legitimate discussion or premium video thing where you discuss and
maybe play contenders for a few hours, simply best Xbox three sixty game,
best PS three game, and best game of the generation Red Dead Redemption.
I don't think we would do best Xbox three sixty, best PS three whole
specific game. Yeah, you would just cram it being the same game.
Yeah, sure, you just lump we in there. Sure, P three
and can Yeah, and you can kind of always like for a multi platform
game, you would just defer see the best version of the game. Yeah,
which in a lot of cases, you know, the virgins are pretty
similar anyway. Yeah, I think we would have to drop like handhelds and
PC discussion just in order to because hestablished some parameters, PC is two fluid,
you know it. You know the boundaries are weird there, and the
handhelds overlap and have different hardware. You know, it is kind of a
three console race at that point, I think this idea has gotten a lot
more interesting since Dan shown up. Well, I would say, with a
bullet and no pun intenda there Red Dead And then that's why you want to
do it is specifically because you have like a fucking some assistance in this BULLSHITD
Dead camp. It's great on team Red Red Dad here. I would have
to go back and look again, but I'm pretty sure. Yes, the
only thing that comes close to me is the Galaxy games. I just kind
of care there. But yeah, but yeah, Red Dad is my favorite
game, but I will back it is. It's just a great game.
That's I've heard tell of the posterous I've heard tell of you not being a
big We've actually never talked about. Yeah, I've been not a big fan
of Red Den. Yeah I've heard that. Yeah, cowboys dumb. I
don't know, like the coolest thing. The guns are lame and all that.
Games you just slow down time, shoot guys on the head off off
of horses riding horses wasn't funnies brownies on a wall and some guy did a
bad thing. You gotta go find where he is and shoot him to death
or like time up and put him on a railroad track. It's it's incredible,
and then go play poker. It's it's the coolest shit. I still
think it's the idea that like playing poker in an open world video game,
but it fits so well. But that put that town what is that town
called? That's on like the marsh, and like it's such a fucking perfect
like Rogues Gallery one up in the northeast, den of iniquity, like that
little yeah yeah, yeah, I mean I can't like, like, I
like honestly can't really have this conversation with you because I was so put off
by that game I stopped playing. It's the perfect place to play poker in
a video games exactly. I normally don't give a shit about these little side
games or whatever, like, oh you can do this, dumb there,
you can bowl in GTA four, I don't care about that. But playing
poker in a saloon and Red Dead like just felt like the right dan like
looking around all the dudes around yet, like it's just full of scoundrels,
liars, dice and you take a whiskey shot crashing through billboards in a car.
I mean that was all right, Yeah, the driving the Carbon X
twelve. Let's not let's not have this debate. Actually right now, you
don't felt good the feel of a plastic guitar in your hands. Oh yeah,
that's all right, the feel of the drum sticks. You've got no
argument with Burnout or Rock Band of those games great games. Yeah, I
know Red Dead like but even both. But if we're having this conversation,
it's like it's we Sports. It's wait, we're talking about our personal I
don't think we can defer to like we're talking about personal cultural impact here because
we're talking about game of the generation, like we want to do separate personal
lists. We Sports is an incredibly important game, but like I wouldn't put
it anywhere within a mile of my top ten. Yeah, it's totally different
conversation if it's personal or if it's because yeah, we Sports is a age
your contender. If we're talking about just the gaming lands, like huge respect
for what they did with that thing, but like I would not go back
and play it. I did not play a lot of it at the time,
you know, like I played it. It was very interesting, but
a lot of that it was really cool at the time. I ended up
playing quite a bit of it. We Bowling was just a go to you
talk about, like dorm games and stuff. So I was in college when
that came out, and that was the thing we did all the time.
It is just we would get we would get crowds in my apartment that would
just go back after the bars and we would all take turns playing we bowling.
Yeah, the bowling in the tennis both. I feel like we're just
like the like holy crap. Yeah, well those were the proofs of concept,
like this ship works. Yeah, it was perfect at hiding the weaknesses.
It was Nintendo Land didn't do well enough, which you could tell they
thought it was going to do that. You remember that E three where it
was like most of their booth was Nintendo Land. This is not going to
be you know, I mean that the deeper, the deeper problem there is
that we U Gimmicks doesn't have the pick up and playing us that the version
did. Yeahs, so you could tell your grandma like, hey, all
you gotta do is swing it like a tennis racket, whereas like the Weu,
it's like, well, you could manage your inventory better on the screen
if you're playing Zelda, like that doesn't really work. Yeah, asymmetric multiplayer
Grandma, I'm the Gumba. Yeah yeah. Red Dead has the most atmospheric
open world ever conceived. It was just riding it just like, yeah,
watching the sunset and stuff while you're doing the hunting steps riding your horse,
and the music is perfect. Like I felt a little weird about how much
I was enjoying and like exploring this fake landscape. Yeah, it's like I
should probably go outside and look at the real like feel some real sunshine.
I'm with you. That was like Sex and the Mercies. But this is
so well built. It's one of those things that seemed really pretty. And
then everything about the gameplay just put me off from minute one, Oh it
gets good, and got two point where I was like, well when does
it get good? Because I put I put hours into it. You you
upgrade, You're shooting pretty fast to the point that you're just like six guns
and guys off a horse is left and right and so much side quest stuff
is really good too, Like I love the hunt and stuff. That's the
other thing is that, like this, it's the one and only time,
like even counting GTA five, that rock Star has like really filled an open
world with a bunch of really cool stuff. Yeah, like rocks, rock
Star might be my favorite developer, but the only game of theirs that I
have loved enough one hundred percent was Read Option. Did every single thing you
can do in that game exactly rock Star San Diego then, or what I'm
saying, Like, you know, I adore, like you know, GTA
five. I think it's a brilliant game, but I don't want to do
every little thing in that game, you know. But Red Dead It's like
I want to be in this world as long as you will give me stuff
to do it this world. I did exactly the same thing. Everything that
there was to do in that game I did. I remember getting back from
a trip and walking to the game stop to buy it because I don't remember
why exactly I decided to walk and getting that and Alan Wake, yeah,
same time. It was like an April or May release, that's right,
yeah, twenty ten I think it was. And then and then getting back
to the house and going like, all right, I'm gonna play both these
games. He's both. I hear, they're fucking awesome. They look great.
It's over two man. I like Alan Wake two. I don't like,
there's some cool stuff in Allan Wake, all right, Jeff, Alan
Wake. I would be more likely to go back and give Alan Wake another
shot than read Wow, that's crazy, tea. Everything about the handling of
the weaponry and everything about Red Dead was just that setting, Like, I
mean, are you not like an old spagetti Western, Like I know it's
not, Yeah, I like, I don't have any particular reverence for that
kind of like cinematic tradition. But even that, even even I I would
be more likely to watch movies than play a game setting it because of some
of the things that happens with when you get guns that old oh okay,
and and some of the stuff that goes into that. But it's never like
Deadwood or anything or never that's such an adherent of the head shot. I'm
amazed you're not more interested in No, I mean the thousands of headshots you
pull in that game. I am good at head at shooting things in the
head. It does not mean that I think that it is enjoyable or now
do it from a horse. A guy beat me at poker in that game.
After a long game, I tied him up, put him on the
back of my horse, took him to the most like bear infested part of
the woods, threw his tied up body on the ground while he was alive,
threw bear bait on him, and then rode away as bears bait.
That is a fucking great game. That's ridiculous. But none of that's like
part of the game that's awesome. I just decided to do that. Dude.
You do a lot of that shit in that game. Yeah. And
that's the thing is the actual like game stuff like this, the missions and
stuff, even the ship in Mexico that people seem to hate. I loved
all that. Sho thought Mexico was fun. Like that's not That's not how
I played GTA at all, like any of Like I'm gonna go do something
random, like I got that. What I'm saying, you don't have to
go looking for it though, it finds you in that game like that.
That's what I mean when I say I think it's the only game that rock
Stars made again, including five GT five that like has interesting dynamic stuff going
on in it all the time. Yeah, I'm not talking about this random
stuff. Like it's not like GTA where you're just putting in a bunch of
codes, like, oh, I got all these weapons and I'm writing a
hovercraft around like not like that, Like stuff like I was pissed that that
guy beat me at poker and that the tools are in the game where like
if I want to feed him to bears, I can do that, or
like you've picked up a wanted poster and the guy you're going after it has
given you a bunch of trouble and you're like fuck you. Yeah. Yeah,
it's like it's and the actual story stuff, not just the random stuff
for the dynamic stuff. Right. I love the story. I love the
story missions, all the side stuff. It's just it's a fucking damn near
perfect game to me, one of the best endings ever all two games.
Yeah. Yeah, it's one of the few video games stories I really get.
The way the way the last forty five minutes to an hour that game
is handled is is a fucking masterclass and how to end the video game.
Oh yeah, which is something a lot of people don't do very well.
True, Apparently we need to revisit that idea at some point. Now we're
good based on Allen Waite Game of the Generation's right, all right? Uh,
here's an email from D. M. Stern. I hope he doesn't
mind me reading his full name, but I love it when people use their
initials as their name sounds so official. It's a dudgeon master commands respect.
He's writing in about The Great Gianna Sisters. Okay, just follow up on
the last upf The Great Gianna Sisters was developed by Rainbow Arts in Germany,
but although folklore has it that Incidos sued them, more recent researches revealed that
the developers pulled the game voluntarily and there was never a court case. Rainbow
Arts later got in similar troubles over their horizontal schmupp pardon use of that term,
katakas did that ring any bells? Ka kim I'm sorry ka ta ki
s yeah, which Activision claimed was too similar to our type, which they
had the home computer rights to, and it was to fate. When Activision's
original porting studio were unable to complete the C sixty four version, they gave
the work to Rainbow Arts, who develop a new port in just seven weeks,
allegedly using a lot of the Takas code. A code as base makes
sense. Yeah, for a strange Factor five did that game relative to the
Amica version? Weird? Huh? Well, Fact five is also a German
developer. I wonder if there's yeah cross pollinations. Okay, so I was
looking at Factory five. Anyway, he ends with. For a real strange
artifact of the eight bit piracy scene, have a look at the Gamer's Guide.
It was a discmag published by Swedish group Triad between nineteen ninety and ninety
five at the very tail end of the C sixty four's life, and its
main function was to rate and rank cracks from all the different groups still active
on the platform. Cracks were scored on timeliness of release, size and number
of files, with extra credits given for added features like cheets and high score
saving or bugs of the original game fixed. Of course, this was accompanied
by pages upon pages of greets, rumors, interviews, scene news, and
bickering news. Oh, it's the best threats and bickering. It sounds outstanding.
Yep, we should go back and find that. Yeah, I would
like to see that. I'm not clear if I assume it was a print
thing if it was put out in the early nineties. Oh, I'm sure
it had to be. I'm sure it was practually a Property four disc that
you would download. Oh is that what disc mag means? Yeah? Oh
interesting, Well man, I missed out. It's fun stuff. Chris from
Wyoming right son about Clash of Clans and vape culture. Oh boy, one
circle, yep. I follow up to Warren's email last week about his vaping
whale for Clash of Clans brother in law at my job. I recently visited
a Virginia site and where the team sorry this is a little messy, where
the team would do two things on breaks, one vape to play and discuss
tactics for Clash of Clans. So these may be related in a weird vaping
makes you want to play Clash of Clans nanobot transactions. They live way man,
if only. What was more distressing was being in the South and working
with a bunch of guys who shortened the name not to Clash but to Clan.
Oh. Very often I would walk into the vape has to hear I
got this mint juice and we need more warriors for the clan. No,
surely they're aware of what they're doing. Right after work, We've got a
clan meeting. Oh dear, I bet you do. Evan's the betsy.
Did you wash your bed sheets? What? Why does it do anything?
I brought my vape juice though it's bana banana bubbleberry. Man, it was
a funny meal. Uh okay Anthony from Waterloo, Ontario. What she says
is nowhere near Halifax. Okay, so you know good to know goodnesscape if
I wanted to. He's writing in about an idea he had whereby Majora's mask
is the fish of the Zelda franchise the fish pH yep, oh no,
I already don't like this. Greetings as sorted bomb folk. While reading a
thread about last week's podcast, I saw people obsessing over the Majora's mask discussion,
and then spotted another comment about you guys mentioning fish on another bomb cast.
The stream's got crossed in my brain and now I can't help but think
they are kindred spirits. Fish is a jam band? Actually he wrote fish
are a jam band? But fuck that is he British? I always know
it's from Canada. So yeah, he's part of the commonwealth. Sure Fish
is a jam band who've made their name by psychedelically riffing on established scales and
covers of well known songs, with a feverish cult following. Majora's Mask is
kind of a series of riffs and experimentations on various existing tropes within the Zelda
franchise. They're both super trippy and are probably greatly enhanced by the use of
recreational substances. Do you guys see a valid point of comparison? Am I
getting high on my own supply? On an unrelated note, with Demons and
Dark Souls being so popular, I was wondering if anyone had any interest in
revisiting another from software franchise, Armored Cores. I remember being absolutely baffled by
it, but maybe I was just missing something. Did you guys ever have
any interest in the Armored Core franchise? Is now the time for a return?
No to both things, he said in that email. No, I
can kind of get down with the Major's Mask being he trippy. Every Fish
live song is fourteen times longer than a full three day cycle in Majora's Masks.
Every jam band sucks. You're saying Fish is better than Major's mask sounds
like you get more value. I don't know, no, I'm just trying
to say that there's never been a good jam b Major's mask I got last
week was Hella, honey, Bruh, Sticks and stems, man, I
don't know what any of that says. Sticks and stems. I don't like
any of those, yep. I don't think I ever played Armor Corps.
I could never wrap my mind. Let's just I mean, I think you
know, just insert name of from software game here, all of them.
Chromos I like Chromhounds, likes a little bit I played. I remember me
and Brian Eckberg being kind of into Chrome. Is that game? I forget
why. I feel like there's just you know, like Mecas Sault was a
good met game. Mac Warrior two was a fantastic met game. Oh yeah,
crazy Ivan, Crazy Ivan, have the Iron. I don't know what
that is. That PlayStation one game? Yeah? Yeah, games, yeah,
games, it's weird. You have to you have to distinguish when you
were talking about met games, whether you're talking about like just an action shooter
or a game where you're basically playing a walking fucking tank. Right, You
know, yeah, because a lot of those MET games are basically sims for
machines that don't exist. I like to battle tech a lot, go and
get cockpit low frame rate, but fuck it, you're a weird cockpit.
It's back when the idea of playing a game against like eight people in the
same room with you was insane. I'll sell you a T shirt, yeah,
battle Tech Center. I would play a MET game if it was all
metal gear solid branding and you could play as different metal gears against each other,
but you did partake of anything with the metal Gear brand. I don't
like acid. I don't like metal gar ass. What about metal gear branded
acid? No? Wait, all my illuse nations guaranteed to be based on
metal yourself did? It's gonna look like those the weirder MGS three trailers.
Oh, like all the symbols and stuff like coming out. Yeah, the
peace sign and the hammer and sickle and halo jumps. Yeah, it's just
gonna look like that. Okay, No, it's gonna be like that first
Fan of Pain trailer where they didn't say it was metal gear Solid fires flaming
whales, and I don't want to envision oh man man using psychedelic substances huh
of any kind. Yeah, I'm not really a drug guy, but yeah,
metal Gear Acid. I don't really want anything to do with any kind
of online metal gear stuff. Yeah, I don't really. But whether you're
piloting Metal Gears or not, it's just not no story based, story based
met game like Crazy Ivan but with metal Gear. Yeah, all right,
what's the FMP metal Gear Rising too? Is just you are the metal Gear
Okay, if you are as Metal Gears got a sword, now that's true.
Yeah? Wait, there's a third metal Gear game. No, I
don't believe the rumors. You've been lied Tolo wants you to believe. You
should come out with a game called metal Gear three that I would play.
Yeah, that I would get excited about, even though I would would know
deep down I was being pandered too. But it's still get excited. Mark
from England straighten. They should come up with a game called the Real metal
Gear Solid three and it's just play right after two? Yeah, bills in
the gaps between two and four? Isn't that just four? Fine? Whatever?
The re release four as the Real metal Gear Solid three Eat Old Things,
metal Gear Solid four, Metal You three Old settings admitted, Oh yeah,
yeah, okay, all right, absolutely, it's largely accurate, but
it's a lot of it has to do with the weapon reinvolved in World War
two games. It's much like to hear the ping when you ride out of
bullets the reload time, but the real times just too long. I guess
I don't know. I don't need an automatic weapon and everything. Were you
big on that stupid PC game? It was the Darkest of Days where you're
it's basically time cop and you're bringing like, no, that game's a pilot
sho oh no, he yeah, he loved it. Yeah, I have
a big Darkest of Days guy. I mean you're saying your problem with older
stuff is you know, old weaponary, So the Darkest of Days was old
settings with new weapon. I mean that does solve the problem. You're right,
Yeah, A ray gun some of my favorite quick looks. Ever,
I don't think i've seen that. I've never seen it. Should go back
and watch it, even though I think it was recorded directly behind me.
Mark from England writes in with an email entitled straight out of Giant Bomb,
in which he wants to know just a quick question, what is everyone's opinion
on the Straight Out of Compton movie in light of the recently released trailer looks
really good. Yeah you think so. Yeah. Yeah, there was like
a leaked trailer that came out of some Ice Cube concert where he showed some
bit of it different from the trailer. Yeah, it was, Yeah,
I was. It was shorter, it had some of the same footage,
but that that was like a month ago or something like that, and I
was watching that and that was that was where I was like, Oh,
Paul Giamatti's playing Jerry Heller. That's fucking perfect. Oh Jesus is it.
It's perfect. Yeah, it's so perfect. Oh my god, sign your
life, I mean your name on the line. Right. Yes, they
should get someone who looks like Paul Giamatti and then shoot reshoot that video totally.
Oh my god. But like like like a shot of the set,
yes, while they're shooting, right, Likes just a scene in the movie
is just them shooting that video. Yeah. Oh that trailer is really crazy.
You watch that thing with some knowledge of like some of the things that
befell NWA and and their members during and after the group existed. It's like,
man, they're covering a lot of fucking weird ground there. I want
to know if they're going to address doctor dre hitting d. Barnes in that
film somewhere. That's what I want to know. That's that's too deep a
cut for me. I'm sorry, all right, I think you're alone in
this room. Fair enough? Now? I do. I do like the
casting choice of ice Cube's son, Yeah, affecting what he is ice Cube?
Did you? Did you watch the trailer? Yeah? I did,
because you see I was watching it right behind Jeff. I'm like, man,
that's good casting, right, Yeah, you're almost like, fucking is
that just ice Cube? But what's going on? Yeah? It's pretty good.
More emails. There's like two more emails. Yeah, I'll see you,
like two more emails. Uh. Daniel from Los Angeles has an email
for Dan. Has Dan been to a roller derby match? I've never been,
but something tells me that he would enjoy it a whole lot, you
know, I have. I went to one of Minneapolis, and I was
all for the idea of like, yeah, this seems like something that some
silly, campy kind of sport, kind of fake thing, whatever the hell
it is, switch sports entertainment exactly, And so I kind of thought that,
like, yeah, it seems like a fun thing to go drink beer
out or whatever. And I went and it was way more confusing than I
anticipated, Like they have all these weird rules and stuff, and it's not
skate past the people. You get one point per person you pass, and
then you put your hands on your hips to signify the end of the jam.
What. Yeah, it's a weird shit like that. Yeah, it's
super confusing. You don't know anyone's story and you have to jump over a
fucking alligator the fu. Yeah. It got to the point where I had
to just stop trying to figure out what was happening and just wait until someone
would trip and be like, whoh, they almost fell off the crowd,
and that would be exciting for a second. But yeah, I saw it
once and I was like, yeah, this is not the one guy had
to move where he would like he would like jump, he would land on
his back on top, somebody would fall in, and then his move was
to just shake. That's pretty funny. He was like an older dude and
he was just like that was the most devastating, like signature maneuver in the
history of the sport. When they tried to like spice it up and really
take on wrestling, and they put it on syndicated TV that literally if there
was a tie, the tiebreaker involved alligators like live ones. Yeah. Is
there is there like central roller Derby governing body? I think for those like
you know, back when there was the t Birds and all those sorts of
teams and stuff like that, it was all kind of one you know,
one show, one touring company, whatever it was. But now it's you
know, people are just doing roll Derby on their own on the side,
just fucking around. Sure. I did like a lot of the creativity and
like some of the names the girls gave themselves, Like most of the names
were pretty funny, like good puns. Yeah. Yeah, so hang on,
if you pass somebody, you get a point. If they then pass
you, do they also get a point? No, because you have to
be wearing the helmet to score. It was like a star on it.
And then there's like blockers or something. It's diffusing. Do that'd be great?
How violent does it actually get? Like it kind of okay? But
you know it's not like written into the rules that you can like throw an
elbow whenever you want. I mean, you're not gonna punch in the face
and stuff. I mean it's worked. It's not real, like it's you
know, like, yes, you can elbow whatever you want. Roller ball,
Yeah, exactly, Okay, oh there should be a roller ball league,
should I was surprised when I went to my first monster truck rally that
like that's worked too. It sounds like they would have these little races and
between the monster truck parts where they were like heels who was like, man,
Kansas City sucks, Oh you hicks in Kansas City. I'm from Missouri.
And then like the Kansas boy like would make a super dramatic thing at
the end to beat the Missouri guy. Like they would have this work stuff.
I don't know if the actual monster truck stuff like whoever smashed the most
cars or however the hell that works, but like the weird but the race,
yeah, I'd be a bunch of dudes on ATVs with like a very
clear heel and a very clear baby face and it came down to those two
at the very end. Terrific. It's weird. It sounds about right.
Can we just say a good guy and bad guy? We should Nope,
none of us are wrestlings. We shouldn't talk their talk talking about face and
heel. Fans say baby face and hell yeah, the asshole ones like the
scumbags, Yeah, say good guy and bad guy. When it comes to
wrestlers, dude, basin heel are not Jeff endorse terms. I think that,
you know, there's a certain amount of like I've definitely seen wrestlers bristle
at people who are not wrestlers using those terms. Healing, face and heel
are commonplace enough now, Like, Okay, I know wrestlers. It's a
weirdly old school thing that is no longer a thing anymore. But I think
there are lines you don't cross, Like, you know, I know wrestlers
that they refer to everything as a gimmick, like if I'm picking out my
phone, like I let me pick up my gimmick and check this, or
they'll call a chair agammick, let me sit in this gimmick here, Like
that's stupid if you're not one of the boys or whatever. I think,
even if it's silly, but that is a thing that wrestlers do. But
I think for a fan, I think like face and heel is acceptable without
being a total ducee fan. Yes, yeah, I don't know. Yes,
I fall into that trap sometimes and I always feel like an idiot when
I do. I don't talk about like work rate and stuff like that,
like I think those are like kind of that's even that's not even real.
Okay, learn something new every day. There are a lot of asshole racing
fans. Actually I just learned multiple things because I also just learned what it
means to work something or for something to be worked. Well, if it's
real, it's a shoot. What it's a shoot, or it's a work
because you are shooting them straight, or there's also such thing as a work
shoot, But when is it ever real? In wrestling, Let's say let's
say me and you were wrestling a match, Brad, and let's say you
you hit me with a potato, which means you hit me with a punch
that was a little too stiff, so you really kind of like your potato
to me. It turns into a shoot. If I throw you one back,
that's called the receipt. If I give you a receipt and then we
start potato when each other back and forth, then it's a shoot fight.
Then we're really fighting. So at a certain point, at some point,
you go into business for yourself. Okay, the combatants get angry enough at
each other that they're actually it's on at the level of like a national level,
like woe, Like you're not going to see that much. Okay,
somebody gets a receipt or something's too professional. Yeah, pretty much like you're
not gonna see straight up shoot fights on in the big leagues. Any of
the times that blood appears in the ring or those are the results of people
going too far, and that that's called if you're bleeding, and it's not
if you're not juicing, you're not getting color, if you're not taking your
gig out. Go on, dude, I can't do this anymore. You're
asking me questions. You're just making shit up this point. I swear to
God all this is real terms. I know exactly what he's saying. I
know I hate myself, but I know exactly what. If you bleed,
and it's not if you're not juicing, not getting color, that's bleeding the
hard way. So let's say you potato me after I potato do you,
and you give me a receipt back. If I'm bleeding out of my eyes,
I'm bleeding the hard way. Bust them open hard way. That's not
me getting color. That's hard way. Oh boy, is like a capsule.
No, it's blood. Like they take the gig the razor blade out,
it's that's where you're marking yourself up. Yeah, they usually take it
out of the wristband or the refereehance it to them or like guys like Rick
Flair would like keep it between their teeth like crazy people, old school guys.
And you take it out and you just uh so, let's say you
hit me with a chair and I'm supposed to get color and Drew, so
you hit me with the chair and I go, I fall down and you
it's kind of a misdirection thing. You parade around the ring with the chair
or whatever, and you get everyone to look at you, or you yell
at the crowd while I'm down there and the camera's not on me, and
I just take the I take the gig out and I get some color.
I just I just do a little cut my forehead and cut your own anytime,
blad it's happened some old wrestlers And look at their fucking foreheads. Look
at the dusty rhodes, like the scarring is real. It's taffy. It
just looks like taffy. Now keep in mind, now this other little thing.
Take about forty aspirin before the match. See your blood's really thin,
and maybe a bunch of beer. And so that way the things. It
doesn't cause a lot of pain, especially for these guys that are on a
bunch of pain bills and shit like that. Don't take forty aspirin. Uh
no, no ever, but yeah they cut it so it doesn't hurt him
much, but visually it adds a lot. Look at old Ric Flair matches,
old Dusty Rhodes matches, like those guys are, they're getting a lot
of color. Okay, So it's not just something that happens incidentally, and
it can it's rare. I mean like last night on Raw Roman Reins got
a cut and he was bleeding in his mouth like that was just the thing
that had rated PG. Now, no point do they induce bleeding. There's
except for once Sam Punk and a cage match for Jerry Lawler. I was
there live, and when Lawler whips him into the ropes, you can see
him very quickly, he just he gigs his forehead very quickly, and so
yeah, he bladd there just because I think it's such an old school thing
to like bleed in a cage match for Jerry Lawler. Yeah, so that's
the only time that PG era I've ever seen an actual blade jobs. But
yeah, it's whenever you see like the Crimson Mask, the Crimson mask is
all from the Crimson Mask. Yeah. Man, that's you're cutting your for
it. I hate myself. I assume these guys have to be well at
least in that era, well, maybe not tested all the time for yeah,
oh wait, are you talking about like for like STDs and stuff.
Bob Orton, Randy Orton's dad was positive for hepatitis C and bladed in a
match involving the Undertaker. Undertaker is fighting Randy Orton, and Randy Orton positive
PHEPS. He comes in and blade, so he was bleeding and they had
not informed the Undertaker ahead of time that he was positive for eptitis and Taker
was piss up. Yeah I do not blame him. Yeah, yes,
yeah, we wrestling. It's the best fucking stupid. It's a bunch of
carny shit, has been, always will be. Wow, it could be
a billion dollars public company. It is still a bunch of fucking weird Carny
ship. Still. I mean they're they're breeding it out. Over time,
there's less and less talk like I was talking about their gig anymore. For
the record, I never used their servitor. I just wanted to sound like
as much of a wrestling dude that's possible. Came in Andy for Game of
the Year when you like dropping all that lingo in the video was keeping a
kabe? Yeah, exactly. We have to stop this, Joseph. Let's
move on. It's the last email. What have we become? I can
go for a hour. Wish I could answer that question. Alex from Vancouver
sends our last email. It's to me, Hello, Brad, I think
you should do one of those outros where the theme music quietly and gradually creeps
up at the end while you're saying that's it for the show or that's going
to be it for the bomb cast. I like that idea. It hypes
me up and stuff. I know you will take my podcast audio editing advice
into great consideration. Yes, Alex, perhaps I will BombCast at giant bomb
dot com is the email address we send the emails, and that's gonna do
it for the show, all right? Thanks for being here everybody. I
