Steelers have a press conference in about an hour from now. I'm not sure if they'll take questions from members of the media. I hope they do. But the one thing about the Mike Tomlin situation is it feels like nobody is factoring him in to coach again. Now you do have to factor in if he does coach, that team has to compensate the Steelers because Mike Tomlin has two years left on his contract. But it feels like a foregone conclusion that Mike Tomlin is not going to be coaching next season. There have been TV Networks shows that have already reached out to Mike or his agent, one that I know of. I'm guessing Fox will be reaching out or already has with Jay Glazer. Jay Glazer a good friend of Mike Tomlin's. If I'm NBC, I'd hire Mike Tomlin for the playoffs. They have the super Bowl this year. Let's see what he does in a big stage. Put him in there, See how he does, See how he gets along with everybody else. Chemistry there. If I'm CBS, I have him in the studio this weekend, I put him in there. Matt Ryan's not there, put him in there. You got Bill Kauer in there. I think that could be fun. You get the first interview with Tomlin, but then you also get him breaking down these games. But you ever know somebody that is like married for a long time and gets divorced and then gets married again right away? What did you do that for? Yeah, that's what it feels like with Tomlin. He's been in a very long term relationship. Why are you going to jump right into another one? Maybe maybe take a year, take a beat.

It's not yeah, I got another job for five years. It's Mike Tomlin. Okay, we're going to have a winning record, right Mike? And are we going to win playoff games? Yes?

Do you guys think he would have stepped down because I would assume this plan has been in his head for months and he didn't make it in a twenty four.

Speaker 2: Yeah, but he's you don't hear his name about any coaching circles. So let's say he got fired, you want to coach again, You can't coach, can't coach anywhere. You haven't heard him say or anybody say that he's going to coach someplace. Maybe they came to that understanding, but they didn't. The Ravens had no problem saying they fired John Harbaugh. No problem. Now the Steelers may say, look, we want you owe it to you, Mike. We want you to go out with your head held high. We're not going to say we fired you. But do I think Mike Tomlin with two years left, it feels like somebody who's burnt out. That's the sense that I got from this. Not you know, are the Steelers trying to protect him and say, hey, look we got to move on from you. We're gonna let you say you're stepping down. If that's the case, and you think they fired him. That's not a guy who then runs into TV. That's a guy who coaches. And if you fire him now, you don't know the Steelers any compensation. So I mean, I think we're getting caught up on semantics that it doesn't matter in the bigger picture. They need a coach and Mike Tomlin has not been mentioned for a coaching vacancy.

I just don't think that he just wants to coach Jarren. I mean, how many jobs are safe when you look at the entire NFL, that they're safe that if Mike Tomlin said I'm interested in coaching the Packers, I would say Andy Reid is certainly safe in Kansas City, Jim Harball with the Chargers. But if you start to look at some of these other you know, Ben Jhonson just got there, Mike McDonald in Seattle. I mean, there's certain situations here safe. Rabel is safe. He just got there. But Rabel wasn't safe a couple of years ago in Tennessee.

Are they going to keep Matt Lafleur. I don't know, but it feels like Mike will have his pick of jobs, whether it's next year, the year after that, the year after that.

They reported fifty million dollars over the next two years. I don't think he's making that kind of money in the I mean, he'll make a lot of money in the media. If Brady's making what he's making at thirty seven and a half, Mike Tomlin might be a twenty million dollar a year guy. If you're paying Romo eighteen million or Troy Aikman million or Collins, Mike Tomlin's walking into a pretty healthy paycheck there.

And that's when I had fred X Freddie Mitchell on and he didn't know the names of the defensive backs for the Patriots. But you know, in fairness to fred X, a lot of players, current players, they'll talk about numbers, you know, they'll say, oh, you know thirty two, you got twenty eight. And so he was talking about the Patriots secondary. We had him on Sports Center. He was still in the early Sports Center, and he started talking about the numbers, and I said, wait a minute, do you know the names of the defensive backs for the Patriots. They didn't, And so this was live TV and it just looked like, you know, I don't know who these bums are the Patriots, even though you had like Lawyer Malloy and Rodney Harrison, you had great defensive backs. And I remember the fallout from that the next day in the Eagle fans who were in Jacksonville, and they were mad at me, and I remember having to have security to and from the Sports Center set the rest of that week. But all that was was he just said their numbers, and I realized that he didn't know their names, and it came off as it doesn't matter who's in the secondary, nobody's going to be able to stop me. Mendoza is the kind of guy that will buy into any kind of culture that Mike Tomlin wants to establish, and I think, you know, he could have a potentially good future here with him in a couple of years.

Is Max Crosby going to be there? I just don't see him coaching. I don't know if he's you know, hey, I'm leaving the Steelers now. I want to coach. I want to prove that I can coach someplace else. I just don't see that. Just feels like he's going to be in TV for a little while and then he'll have his pick. He might the Raiders job be opening in two years. It might be, Hey, you know now, I could take over that job. The Lakers are twenty three and fourteen. Maybe they're maybe twenty four and fourteen. They blew out the Hawks, didn't they. Rich Paul the founder of Clutch Sports and partnership with Lebron. He launched a new podcast with former ESPN personality Max Kellerman. On Monday's episode, Rich Paul said that he would trade Austin Reeves to Memphis for Jaren Jackson Junior, the third if he were in charge of the Lakers. He said, if I was with the Lakers, I'd be targeting their big man. He was then asked by Max what Los Angeles would have to give up to get the defensive player of the year. He would offer expiring contracts in addition to the last first round picks. They can offer twenty thirty one or twenty thirty two, or they could trade Austin Reeves. Well, I mean, he's got an opinion on what he would do if he was running the Lakers. The problem is that it doesn't take long to connect the dots of does Lebron want this? His agent is talking about this, and now if you're covering the Lakers, what are you doing?

The draft is I believe in less than one hundred days, whoever takes a gig on top of job security has the draft forthcoming with a lot of stack picks number one, number two. There's a lot of comparisons here, I believe to the Sean Payton situation. And the difference between resignation and getting terminated is that even if he takes a year off and he comes back, I think there's a good faith agreement he doesn't go to a competitor, But if he does, there is they are old compensation. I believe that is the case with Tomlin.

But they went through the process of the Rooney rule. And that's why. You know, two other coaching candidates African American, and I remember them telling me they weren't going to get the job. And I said, but you get better by doing the interview because you'll hear sometimes, oh that coach didn't interview. Well, go in and learn what they ask you. So when you get that chance and maybe you blow them away like Mike Tomlin did. And it's tough to say that for me, a white person telling an African American candidate, yeah, you're probably not getting the job. But don't pass up the opportunity to understand what they're going to ask you in a job search, and not all teams are the same, but you can go in there and go, oh my gosh, I never thought of that. Or next time around, I will have these answers and maybe it's you know, I'm going to blow you away with my personality. I'm going to blow you away with my knowledge. And you know that has happened before where somebody is not the second or third candidate, they go in there and they end up stealing the job, all right, because it's an inexact science when you're bringing people in to tell you about your football team, and they may tell you something that you don't know, and that's when they peak your interest.
