00:00:00 Speaker 1: You are listening to the Dan Patrick Show on Fox Sports Radio. 00:00:04 Speaker 2: He's Bruce Pearl Turner and CBS Sports college basketball analysts. Three time National Coach of the Year. And in case you didn't know, former Auburn head coach Bruce Pearl, what's bothering you today? 00:00:18 Speaker 3: Coach? 00:00:19 Speaker 4: The life's good, Dan. It's great to see you. My heartbreaks or my son. 00:00:24 Speaker 5: But you know what, you got a chance to win your way in or lose your way out, and Auburn probably was just one more win away from dancing. 00:00:34 Speaker 3: How would you rate your week. 00:00:37 Speaker 2: Or the last ten days or two weeks, let's say as an analyst. 00:00:43 Speaker 4: That's a great question. Dad. 00:00:44 Speaker 5: I was a basketball coach, head coach for thirty years and been in basketball for forty eight years, and so this analyst thing and being in the media's brand new. So I am a rookie at that, even though I'm sixty six years old now. And sometimes you don't know how you're doing. I mean, when I used to play or used to coach, there was a scoreboard. I get I get off, and I'm like, I don't know, I don't know how I did. I imagine some people think I'm entertaining. I would imagine some think of people think I'm an idiot, and but you never know whether you winning or losing. 00:01:17 Speaker 2: But does somebody tell you, I mean, you got headlines. I don't know if you feel like that's part of your job. 00:01:25 Speaker 4: No, I don't think it's part of my job. 00:01:27 Speaker 5: I think my job is to tell you what I think based on my years of experience, and and I've never, as you know, Dan, I've never been politically correct, so I really don't worry about that stuff. And what I did learn, though, is sometimes when you do give your opinion about something you know, you can be it can be taken out of context, or you can be taking a task. And I really don't mind either one of them. Right now, I'm the ugly stepmother because I asked the question, are we looking for the thirty seven best teams or the thirty seven most deserving teams? When it came to a large and so that because became enemy number one again. 00:02:01 Speaker 2: Okay, how much of the story of Miami, Ohio help them get into the tournament? 00:02:07 Speaker 5: I'd say about ninety five percent. And that's fine. There is a human element that exists in that room, and it should exist. You don't just go by the metrics. You just don't come by the numbers of math. You gotta have a little bit of a field. And so as said, I said this from the very beginning, I would put them in the field. 00:02:24 Speaker 4: I would put them in the field. 00:02:25 Speaker 5: If you want to tell me, do they qualify based on these metrics? The answer is absolutely not. And it's interesting Dan last night I asked the when I was on CBS, I. 00:02:34 Speaker 4: Asked Chairman Gill. 00:02:35 Speaker 5: I said, okay, last two in first to out, what were the metrics that you know. 00:02:41 Speaker 4: It was sort of the defining factor for you. 00:02:42 Speaker 5: You know that that's a fair question, right, yeah, And he said, he said, quality wins. Quality wins was he said, I said, And I did not follow up out of respects. And you know, these are things we can talk about the next day. Mayamaha doesn't have a quality win. Oklahoma and Auburn, who are the last teams left out, have a half a dozen quality wins each. 00:03:05 Speaker 4: And so. 00:03:07 Speaker 5: I think it's sort of just added to the drama a little bit. But look, I'm happy they're in. They deserve to be in the field. It's what the Cinderellas are all about and so I think we need a sort of adjust the metrics so we get more of these mid major teams in a tournament. But the way it's set up right now, you've got to make an exception. 00:03:26 Speaker 2: I thought Stanford had a better argument than Oklahoma and Auburn coach tell me why, well would they have five quad one victories? They had twenty plus wins. I mean, just start there. It feels like a pretty good resume. 00:03:43 Speaker 4: I agree, No, it was a good resime. 00:03:44 Speaker 5: And one of these I've said all along with I don't think anybody got screwed here. 00:03:47 Speaker 4: Nobody got screwed. I don't think it was anybody. 00:03:49 Speaker 5: Oh my god, how did this team get in or not get in? You can make an argument Stanford, you can make an argument for They said to me, if VC you didn't win their tournament, they were going to be out. And I would have made an argument for VCU. The argument for Auburn was they played seventeen quad one games. 00:04:10 Speaker 4: Seventeen. 00:04:11 Speaker 5: I don't know how played one quad two. I mean, it's very difficult when you talk about apples and oranges. Auburn beat Saint John's, who was the biggest champion. They beat Florida. At Florida, it was the SEC regular season champion. They beat Arkansas by twenty who was the SEC tournament champion. So when it came to quality wins, I thought that that was something that could have pushed them over the top. They had the number four straighten the schedule. I'm not sure where Stanford's was. And a lot of that has to do with. 00:04:38 Speaker 3: Intense Can you look at Auburn objectively? 00:04:44 Speaker 5: Yes, on one hundred percent, ken Like, I think it's okay. 00:04:47 Speaker 4: That Auburn and Oklahoma, for example, aren't the field. 00:04:50 Speaker 5: I think it's okay they should have won one more game, and so there's nobody complaining about it. But I prided myself on telling you what I really think was a rooting for my son. Of course I was rooting for my son. People say, well, you got your son the job. No, I didn't get my son the job. My son played for me. My son was an assistant for me for eleven years. He's the associated coach, he was the defensive coordinator. 00:05:13 Speaker 4: Did I help him? Absolutely? I did. As a dad, of course I did. 00:05:17 Speaker 3: But you look at are you paid by Auburn? 00:05:21 Speaker 4: You know what I'm in an ambassador's position. And not many Jewish guys. 00:05:27 Speaker 5: Who walk away from thirty million dollars, but this one did. 00:05:32 Speaker 4: And you know who does that. 00:05:33 Speaker 5: My wife was like, honey, why couldn't you just stink for a couple of years, let him fire you and pay you ten million dollars to do what you're doing now. But no, you go ahead and quit, leave all that on the table. Yeah, no, Dan, I objectivity for me not an issue. 00:05:52 Speaker 2: Okay, But I don't know if you have to disclose that that. Hey, I'm still paid as an ambassador for Auburn. If it felt like you were kind of dinging Miami, Ohio because Auburn was going to be on the bubble. So that's the appearance, Okay, that's that's how a lot of people look. So the appearance of that, the optics didn't look good. 00:06:15 Speaker 4: Well, that's that's fair. 00:06:17 Speaker 5: And it certainly as a former Auburn basketball cook, what former coach or former athlete. 00:06:23 Speaker 4: Charles Barkley roots for Auburn, he does. But Charles Barkley is always going to keep it real and. 00:06:29 Speaker 3: And but he was paid at Auburn, not after Auburn. 00:06:37 Speaker 4: That's very enough. 00:06:37 Speaker 5: Hey, hey, listen, what if if, if I wasn't able to be objective, I wouldn't continue to be at Auburn. It's it's sort of a uh, it's sort of the best of both worlds. I would give that up in a heartbeat. If if it, if optics became such an issue that I couldn't be an analyst. You know, Jay Wright works were in Villanova for all those years. He still worked there, and nobody questioned whether or not Jay Wright would have been objective. 00:07:08 Speaker 3: Are you retired as a coach? 00:07:11 Speaker 4: Yeah, I am. I thought about coming. I thought about it. 00:07:15 Speaker 5: I got a few phone calls even this year, but then head coach for thirty years and it was enough. 00:07:20 Speaker 4: We had a great run, and I do want to do some other things. As you know. 00:07:26 Speaker 5: You know, I'm a huge advocate for this country. I want to coach America. I'm being a Jewish American. I work really hard to bring Jews and Christians and Muslims together. Abraham's a father of all nations. As the coach, I love to bring people together. Religion divis us and separates us. And of course I love my country and I also love my ancestral home on Israel. So those are the areas that I'm working in right now, and I think that in many ways I had the success I had and to give me this platform I am. 00:07:56 Speaker 4: I want Jewish. 00:07:57 Speaker 5: Americans to be this country's greatest patriots because this country saved us from the Holocaust and gave us this opportunity and we are hopefully making most of it. 00:08:06 Speaker 4: That comes with a responsibility. 00:08:08 Speaker 2: Talking to Bruce Pearl, CBS Sports college basketball analyst, former Auburn head coach, best pro prospect in the tournament is who aj debansta. 00:08:18 Speaker 5: I think both on and off the court, Dan, if you're going to invest in somebody that is gonna be your number one pick and you want to build your franchise around that, I think the stuff both on and off the court work ethic. 00:08:33 Speaker 4: Although this year is a great draft. 00:08:36 Speaker 5: It'll be the best freshman in the history of the NBA Draft. This year it is. It is talented top, It's very very deep. I don't think you can go wrong. 00:08:46 Speaker 4: I love. 00:08:49 Speaker 5: I love several other players in there. I love Boozer Peterson is an incredible talent. Caleb Wilson is amazing. 00:08:58 Speaker 4: UH. 00:08:59 Speaker 5: The point guards A Cuff, Yeah, A Cuff is Uh is a great great story, Kingston Fleming. It is absolutely, absolutely loaded, and that's why all these NBA teams are tanking because they want to they want to improve their position in the draft. 00:09:15 Speaker 3: When you see Patino still doing it, what do you think? 00:09:19 Speaker 4: Amazing? Amazing? 00:09:21 Speaker 2: How does he have the energy? Though, Bruce, it feels like that's what leaves you first. 00:09:25 Speaker 5: Yeah, I don't know. I mean everybody ages differently. I think it's I think my guess is it's it's it's just it's it's his. His family and basketball are his two major passionate interests. 00:09:38 Speaker 4: A little bit of horse racing. Dan, he was the best I ever went up against. 00:09:42 Speaker 5: He he knew what I wanted to do and how I wanted to do it. He knew how to take it away. He's not getting older, He's getting better. Tom Iszoe' is the same way. I mean, Tom iszou is getting better. If it's it's hard to believe he has got uh he has got good teams that he makes. 00:09:59 Speaker 4: He makes it a great eight teams. 00:10:00 Speaker 5: Yeah, and so uh, I got Patino at Saint John's making a little bit of run this year in my bracket. I think there, I think uh Zubi edge of four is terrific. They guard really really well and and they're starting to shoot the basketball better. 00:10:16 Speaker 3: How many teams can win it? 00:10:19 Speaker 5: I think, uh, there's certainly everybody that's on the one line can win it. I think Saint John's as a five. How to Saint John's. How are they a five? I mean, that's just like they're a three seed. 00:10:31 Speaker 4: In my house? How can you come be a two and Saint John's be a five? 00:10:35 Speaker 5: I know it's the body to work, and Saint John's wasn't playing great early in the season. I'd say there are seven or eight teams I think that will winning. I think it's gonna be a lot of chalk well. 00:10:45 Speaker 2: You know, and we talk to different people about this that it used to be the last ten games of your schedule meant the most going into the tournament, and I don't think that's the case now. They look at your body of work. I don't care what you did in October or November what you're doing now. And Saint John's, you you win the regular season, you win the Big Eiast tournament, you won what's six in a row, you blow out Yukon. 00:11:10 Speaker 3: I got a factor that in Yeah, Dan. 00:11:13 Speaker 4: Let me give you one something to think about. 00:11:14 Speaker 5: I agree how how you're playing lately is more important, but the schedule because people are more interested in late February and early March. You notice how the best teams play against the best teams like crazy. That's because there are more eyeballs on college basketball after college football are over. So the last ten I don't think is a great metrics just because of the toughness of the schedule for the best teams. I mean, if you're on you know, so that would be just an issue. That's that's why I would not lean in that direction. 00:11:46 Speaker 3: Good to talk to you. Keep stirring it up. 00:11:48 Speaker 4: Appreciate you, brother, Thank you always. 00:11:50 Speaker 3: That's Bruce Pearl. 00:11:52 Speaker 1: Be sure to catch the live edition of The Dan Patrick Show weekdays at nine am Eastern six am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the Heart Radio app. 00:12:02 Speaker 6: Hey, this is Jason McIntyre. How many people are asking you for tips on how to fill out their brackets? 00:12:47 Speaker 8: Just a cup ball? It hasn't been too bad. It's early, so I'm sure i'll get more. 00:12:52 Speaker 2: Okay, But do you have a standard response when people go, hey, I need some help? 00:12:57 Speaker 7: Yeah, I tell them to turn endo the show. I gave them on the show. 00:13:03 Speaker 2: Got any problems with Let's start at the top four seeds? 00:13:07 Speaker 3: You good? 00:13:08 Speaker 7: No, that was an easy call. I think. 00:13:11 Speaker 8: You know, there might have been a little bit of discussion maybe a week ago about does Yukon get the number one seed? But once they lost Saint John's, I think it was Florida without question. 00:13:22 Speaker 3: How many teams can win? 00:13:26 Speaker 8: I think there are probably seven maybe that can win. We're reaching a final four, as you know, is a lot different. You know, you win four games something happens in your bracket, but once you get to the final four, that's a different animal. So I think the list of teams that can reach a final four is a long one, but the list that can win it, I think. 00:13:43 Speaker 7: Is a lot shorter. But this is a different year than last year. 00:13:47 Speaker 8: You know, last year we let into selection Sunday going okay, I mean there's a list of four teams that can win it. And when many of us, myself included, picked all four number one seeds to make the final four, you know, we got critics. It's like, come on, man, you guys are going chalk and all that stuff. You're going no, Like, this is different and it's happened before. It happened two thousand and eight, the first time since seeding began, But this feels a lot different. I think there's going to be more disruption and more upsets. 00:14:16 Speaker 2: The difference that NIL is making in college football to college basketball today is what it's similar. 00:14:24 Speaker 8: I think we're seeing across the power conferences the talent is spread out more. 00:14:29 Speaker 7: You can't stockpile like you used to. 00:14:33 Speaker 8: I don't think there's enough data to make a conclusion on what's going on with the lower conferences. Coaches complain a lot, and I get why they complain, But the smaller conferences, when a player does really well, that player is likely to go to a bigger stage. 00:14:51 Speaker 7: But tell me how that's bad. 00:14:53 Speaker 8: Like the coaches go to a bigger stage, they go to the NCAA tournament for Miami, Ohio, and they leave for a bigger job, So you expect the players not to have the same ambitions. 00:15:02 Speaker 7: I actually think the portal works really well there. 00:15:05 Speaker 8: I don't know about you, but you know, I had heard of Dalton connect and seen him play at Northern Colorado, but I only saw him play because I was I was looking at another NBA prospect that he was playing against, and so was he required because he was under recruited out of high school to stay at Northern Colorado. Because it makes all the pearl clutching college people feel better. It's stupid, And you know, I don't think it's a loyalty issue, like were we loyal? You know, guys like you and me and our age, Were we loyal or did we just have no choice? 00:15:36 Speaker 7: I think it's more of the latter than the former. 00:15:39 Speaker 2: But I'm not surprised when I hear this guy started at this college and then he went to this college, and now he's at this college. 00:15:45 Speaker 3: Would you limit the number of times you could transfer? 00:15:50 Speaker 7: I would limit it by contract. 00:15:51 Speaker 8: So what you would do is sign a player to a multi year contract and put significant buyouts in it. So the choice, the choice there is does the player sign weigh that right in in an arms length bargaining position, and maybe you take more money to stay or less money to have the option to leave after a certain period of time. But it's got to be negotiated, and if you wanted to do something different, you do it by collective margaining. You know, people often say to me, well, there's a salary cap in the NBA. Well, yeah, the players agreed to it, and it's for the betterment of the whole. 00:16:25 Speaker 7: But the players are part of it. There's choice involved. 00:16:28 Speaker 8: We've lived in a system, at least people of our age, lived in a system where it was unilaterally imposed on the players, and you know, that's that was never right. 00:16:39 Speaker 7: It was never. 00:16:39 Speaker 8: Legal, And now that it's been ruled illegal by the Supreme Court, you know, people have gotten a little more rational about it. 00:16:48 Speaker 2: Talking to Jay billis so the mothership we were talking about Rick Patino earlier today, his ability to evolve or change. I mean, you go back to you know, when he started embracing the three, when he was at Providence and you know, Louisville and Kentucky and Iona over in Greece. I mean, most of the guys his age have bowed out because they don't want to deal with all of this. 00:17:15 Speaker 3: Like, how do you explain Patino? 00:17:18 Speaker 8: I think, first and foremost, he's just a basketball junkie, Like he has to have the game, and he's one of the best teachers that has ever lived. I put Huge Brown up there in that category of understanding and teaching the game, and I just don't think he can imagine a life without it. 00:17:37 Speaker 4: You know. 00:17:37 Speaker 8: I know he plays golf and he has other interests. You know, you've been the horse field and stuff like that, but he's not willing to go do that full time and just sort of enjoy the later stage of the life. 00:17:49 Speaker 7: He still wants to be in the in the fray. And I really like that. 00:17:52 Speaker 8: I mean, you know, can you imagine Dan when we were younger, Like I grew up in la in the shadow of UCLA, and John wouldn't retire when I was like in fifth grade in nineteen seventy five, he was sixty five years old, and I thought he was the oldest man that ever lived. And now these guys are going into their mid to late seventies, and I think it's great. But man, if you're a younger coach wanting to work your way up, you're going, geez, how old do I have to be to get a head coaching job that I want? 00:18:19 Speaker 2: The coverage of Miami of Ohio, how do you explain it? 00:18:24 Speaker 7: You know, I think it's been largely fair. 00:18:27 Speaker 8: I applaud Miami Ohio being in the field, but the committee is doing something they've never done before. They've gone essentially against their principles of strength of scheduling and having to play people like who did you play and who did you beat? 00:18:43 Speaker 7: Like, look, Miami's really good. 00:18:45 Speaker 8: So I would not argue with any basketball person that says, look, I think they're one of the best teams in the at large pool and they deserve to be in. 00:18:51 Speaker 7: That's a fair judgment to make. 00:18:53 Speaker 8: But if we're going to sit here and say, like the chairman of the committee and I'm forgetting his name, and I apologize, but was talking last night saying, well, Miami went in the field before, uh, you know, NC State or Texas or all that. But when they really scrubbed, you know, they call it scrubbing. When they really scrubbed, the resumes. 00:19:12 Speaker 7: Then Miami of Ohio has moved to actually the last team in the. 00:19:16 Speaker 8: Field, and you're like, well, did you scrub them against the teams that you left out? 00:19:20 Speaker 7: Like, you know what, what's the what's the metric here? 00:19:23 Speaker 8: Because if you go buy Kenpom dot com, which does all the all the per one hundred possession metrics, they're in the nineties and and look they're. 00:19:34 Speaker 7: Good, but they didn't play anybody. 00:19:36 Speaker 8: And I don't buy this thing about we couldn't get better games, Like I'm not saying that that Duke would come and play. You use those things are difficulty. 00:19:45 Speaker 7: Come on, man, you could play a better schedule. 00:19:48 Speaker 8: But now they're in the tournament, they're going to Dayton, and they have an opportunity to prove themselves and I think that they're going to quit themselves really well, because they're really they're they're very very good. 00:19:58 Speaker 2: Yeah, well, it's basically a home game from Miami, Ohio because in Dayton, you know, that's forty minutes away. Would you have if you were on the committee, would you have argued to keep them out with their resume. 00:20:11 Speaker 8: I wouldn't have argued that, but I would have said, what are our principles here, Like, you know, we're looking at these other teams with different metrics than we're looking at this team. And look, I think it's great, Like I think it's a great story. It makes everybody feel good, it's great, and so I'm in favor of them being in the tournament. But there's nothing in the committee's principles that say, hey, we got to have a feel good story here, because you know, there seems to be this feeling that the little guy kind of deserves a chance, and they have a chance. Everybody has the same chance. This is the fairest thing possible that everybody, every school, every team has the same chance to get in the tournament when you're automatic bid against your peers in a league you've chosen to be in. If you can't do that, you go in the pool with everybody else, and they take the best teams out first. Now, if they're one of the best teams, then take them out. I'm fine with that. 00:21:03 Speaker 7: But you know, we. 00:21:04 Speaker 8: Act like the players that are at some of the teams that were left out from major conferences, that they don't have feelings, that they don't care and that they don't want to be in the tournament. 00:21:15 Speaker 4: You know. 00:21:16 Speaker 8: And if we're going to say, hey, you know, you had plenty of chances, I'm good with that. If we say you lost too much, that's fine, But you know, I don't know how to exactly how to measure did you play enough quality games? Because they you know, Miami Ohio played only one one game against the Quad two team, No Quad one games, everything was Quad three and Quad four. If if a team out of the Atlantic ten did that, they'd be dismissed in no time. 00:21:41 Speaker 7: And to me, like I've heard people say this if. 00:21:44 Speaker 8: Miami and Ohio had lost just one game this year, but or well, I guess they wouldn't be in that large if they had lost to Akron and then lost in their tournament, now they'd be out. Like that's what that's the difference. You know, to me that the make a whole lot of sense. 00:22:01 Speaker 2: Best pro prospect that we'll see in the tournament is who. 00:22:05 Speaker 8: Aj debonsa of BYU and then Darius A Cuff, junior at Arkansas. 00:22:11 Speaker 4: I mean, this. 00:22:14 Speaker 7: Tournament is loaded with great players. 00:22:16 Speaker 8: Like this draft is as good as I can remember, especially a freshmen. And I've never seen a freshman class this deep of really really good players. And there've been there obviously been great drafts before where the top five were just as good or something like that, but we've never had a draft like this where you go twenty deep of freshmen that are eighteen nineteen years old, that they're this good. I mean, think about this, Dan, Like you know, on the day that you know, again the pearl clutching college basketball people were losing their minds over Charles Bettioco coming in from the G League. Charles Vedioco scored I think twelve points that day, and we had three freshmen that went for over forty, and we were all worried about Charles Bettioco. 00:23:00 Speaker 3: I got to get a duke question in, don't I am? 00:23:03 Speaker 7: I required to yes, as am I? 00:23:06 Speaker 2: Is that a North Carolina blue that you have on or is that a Duke blue? 00:23:11 Speaker 8: No, that's a great question because I think it's important for everybody to understand this, especially North Carolina people. North Carolina, the color light blue was invented before the University of North Carolina was established. And I went to Rolling Hills High School in Los Angeles, Go Titans and the colors were blue and gold, and I am a loyal, loyal supporter of my high school. 00:23:36 Speaker 7: Even though they changed the name of it. 00:23:38 Speaker 8: It is no longer Rolling Hills High School is now Peninsula High School because our arch rival Pallas Verdes we smelled dead. 00:23:45 Speaker 7: Fish closed down for a period. 00:23:47 Speaker 8: They combined the schools and they didn't want to hurt PV's feelings, and then PV opened up again. It was a conspiracy, Dan, But I think I'm still the all time leading score at Rolling Hills High School because the Peninsula numbers don't. 00:23:59 Speaker 3: Count that UH should be the favorite. 00:24:04 Speaker 7: Yes, but they got some injury issues. 00:24:07 Speaker 4: You know. 00:24:07 Speaker 8: Caleb Foster, their starting guard, has a foot injury, and I don't know when he's gonna be back. If he'll be back, I'm hopeful that he will for their sake. And then Patrick Dunba, their center, didn't play in the a SEC tournament. 00:24:21 Speaker 7: They held him out with another foot issue. 00:24:23 Speaker 8: So if they're not one hundred percent, that certainly limits their ceiling. But they've got the most consistent and productive player. I think in the tournament in Cameron Boozer, Like the numbers he's been putting up are outrageous. You know, for John Shire to have Cooper Flag and Cameron Boozer back to back, that's uh, that's pretty pretty good recruiting. 00:24:45 Speaker 2: Safe travels. We'll talk to you soon. But my son plays at Howard University. 00:25:42 Speaker 9: They play in Dayton on Tuesday night and your old stopping grounds get UMBC. I'm on a tech chain with Jimmy Ferry, the coach at UMBC, because he's been a friend for twenty years. And they're they're star Ace Valentine. I grew up with his uncles. His mama works with my daddy. It's a game. I gotta get to. You stuck the team from the MEAC in the playing game again. Damn it. 00:26:04 Speaker 3: I'm pissed. Uh, Michelle, you a proud grad of Missouri. 00:26:09 Speaker 2: Yes, indeed, m I Z okay, how far are you going to have them going? 00:26:14 Speaker 4: Though? 00:26:15 Speaker 12: You know I'm my bracket is busted every year from the beginning because I'm a Homer Homer to like the hilt Dan, and I've got them going. 00:26:23 Speaker 10: I usually take them to. 00:26:24 Speaker 11: The final four. 00:26:26 Speaker 10: I don't know why, but I just do. 00:26:27 Speaker 3: You're a good team, you know what. 00:26:29 Speaker 12: They can be dangerous if they just like they got some sense, Just act like you got. 00:26:33 Speaker 11: Some my kid feel Barren. 00:26:37 Speaker 10: I love that and the Big Boy because the Big Boy. 00:26:41 Speaker 11: The Simpsons and the Big Boy. 00:26:43 Speaker 9: Yes, Dan Missouri came to Howard this year to open the season up. 00:26:47 Speaker 11: It was amazing much. 00:26:48 Speaker 9: I want to shout out coach Gates for doing that, to bring in an SEC team to an HBCU. More of that should happen, then there wouldn't be these inequities come time for the NCAA tournament, and hell would job by Henny Blakeney at Howard after his best player was stolen by Creighton. 00:27:03 Speaker 12: Don't let me get started, let him get started, man, let him cook. 00:27:06 Speaker 3: No, no, we got I want to know whether any any. 00:27:12 Speaker 2: Surprises last night, like there was no surprises on selections, A lot of surprises, like biggest surprise was won. 00:27:20 Speaker 12: Biggest surprise, you know. I think the biggest joy of the night was Michael B. 00:27:25 Speaker 10: Jordan winning Best Actor. 00:27:26 Speaker 12: I don't know if it was necessarily a surprise because he had kind of the tide started turning in that race. I think in the last few weeks where I. 00:27:35 Speaker 9: Think even after the Golden Globe, you could see it moving even though he. 00:27:38 Speaker 12: Was Timothy Salomet and uh, you know, so people were saying, well, maybe Michael B. Jordan could win this, and then I think in the last week it was like, well he could now be the favorite. 00:27:50 Speaker 3: Wait, but win are the votes in? Like all the VAULTA was like. 00:27:54 Speaker 12: No, it was like like two weeks ago, last Thursday on a Thursday was the closing of the vote. 00:28:00 Speaker 9: I think that's why you also saw Amy Madigan move up so dramatically in the end. 00:28:05 Speaker 11: I mean she played a hell of a role in Prisoners. Gladys is an all time character. 00:28:10 Speaker 12: Yes, absolutely, but I think a lot in that race, a lot of the other people canceled each other out and so but I also think, I mean, she was incredible in that movie. But yeah, I don't know that I would say surprises. The only thing, Dan, is that all the races were up in the air going in, so not really a surprise, but just like what's gonna happen, what's gonna what's gonna go on here? 00:28:31 Speaker 2: How many movies will be labeled a classic of this year too? 00:28:37 Speaker 10: Yeah, one battle after another in Centers. 00:28:39 Speaker 3: Will both wow. 00:28:40 Speaker 11: See we disagree, I say Hamnet and Sinners. 00:28:43 Speaker 12: Oh well, Hamlet's pretty much a perfect movie. 00:28:46 Speaker 10: I don't know if you've seen it. 00:28:47 Speaker 2: Dan, My wife watched it and I told her to download me on it. 00:28:52 Speaker 10: So she gave you that you will cry, You will cry. 00:28:55 Speaker 2: I was watching Weekend at Bernie's and I told her one hundred. 00:28:59 Speaker 11: And seventy. 00:29:02 Speaker 3: And you know, he's dead. He's actually dead. 00:29:06 Speaker 9: Dan was actually reading his script for the next Adam Sandler movie. 00:29:09 Speaker 10: That's what he was was, of course what he was doing. 00:29:11 Speaker 12: I think actually one of the big surprises Dan is that your boy Adam Sandler didn't get nominated for an Oscar. 00:29:16 Speaker 10: Maybe that was the biggest surprise of this movie. 00:29:18 Speaker 2: No, it was the previous uncut gems that to me was was criminal. 00:29:25 Speaker 10: He was great, Yeah, he was great. 00:29:26 Speaker 12: Well, the safties, you know, and the Safti's made Marty supreme, and it was very much in that vein. 00:29:32 Speaker 10: Of being manic. 00:29:33 Speaker 12: And weird and crazy and great and all of those things and maddening. 00:29:37 Speaker 9: And I mean Marty Supreme went from oh my gosh, everybody loves this movie too, Like no one was talking about I still love them time we got to the Oscars. But I'm saying, the talk, the chatter, the buzz died was there? 00:29:50 Speaker 2: What is there, Timothy Chalomet fatigue in Hollywood. 00:29:56 Speaker 12: I don't know if it's fatigue. 00:29:58 Speaker 10: I think the. 00:29:58 Speaker 12: Way that they went about marketing the movie started to tank near the end because they did this unconventionally. 00:30:05 Speaker 10: So what he did was he marketed. 00:30:07 Speaker 12: He didn't do interviews with traditional media. He went to he went the sports route though, and he went to all like this. He went to Mellows podcast and he did you know, the ESPN shows, and he did that. And so I don't think his campaign was targeted to the Oscar voters as much as it should have been. Although I thought the marketing of the movie, he was everywhere, he just wasn't where. 00:30:29 Speaker 9: The voters were, right. I think that's the perfect point that the traditional media. He walked by the traditional media at every one of the awards shows, did not stop to talk, did not do the interviews. And I think we talked to him in Palm Springs, but I mean literally after Palm Springs. 00:30:44 Speaker 11: What did he say? 00:30:45 Speaker 10: He did nothing? 00:30:45 Speaker 3: Okay, Yeah, this is wild to watch. Is it a sports movie? 00:30:50 Speaker 11: No? 00:30:51 Speaker 10: No, I think it is. 00:30:53 Speaker 7: No. 00:30:53 Speaker 10: Absolutely, I'll disagree with you on that. 00:30:55 Speaker 12: It's a movie about p it's a movie about life, it's a movie about ambition. 00:30:59 Speaker 10: It's the movie a. 00:31:00 Speaker 12: Little bit about narcissism and and you know how you show up in the world, but it definitely is a sportsman. 00:31:07 Speaker 9: Or the love of the game, Bingo Long's Traveling All Stars and Motor Kings. I mean, you can name a lot of movies that are about sports. 00:31:16 Speaker 11: I don't think this one. 00:31:17 Speaker 9: Ping Pong feels like the backdrop almost to the manic craziness. 00:31:21 Speaker 2: All of these sports movies, Kevin, are not about sports. Durham is not about minor league baseball, is about dreams, is not about baseball. 00:31:32 Speaker 9: But it weaves the sport in in a way that is different in this movie the sport of I think spink Ping Pong in. I think that when you sit down and you watch, I mean, look, I still every time, every time I watch for the love of the game, I still I love it watching you know him on the mound and the way they weave the game and the names. 00:31:55 Speaker 11: And all that stuff. I think that's different than how Marty's sopri. 00:31:58 Speaker 12: Evean's a traditionalist in that way, Dan and I see we can think outside the box. 00:32:05 Speaker 3: Why didn't Sean Pinn show up? 00:32:07 Speaker 12: Well? The New York Times reports that he went to Ukraine. Our reporting from his rep was just that he's out of the country. Some people think he just didn't want to show it. You know, he hasn't really showed up for much since the Golden Globes this season. But I will stand Tinto's down on the fact that Sean Pinn gave the best performance on camera in any movie this year. It was that good and he deserved the Oscar. I think it was ridiculous. He wasn't there, but he deserved the Osa. 00:32:39 Speaker 2: The best acting role, and it's not even close in my opinion. 00:32:44 Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead, Ethan Hawk. 00:32:48 Speaker 12: We carried that movie from start to finish, and he. 00:32:51 Speaker 3: Was He was incredible. 00:32:54 Speaker 9: It was the best performance of the year. Her expressions in Hamnet were incredible. With her face the end of that movie, that five minutes of her standing at that stage watching that was incredible art. 00:33:08 Speaker 3: It was You couldn't, Kevin. 00:33:09 Speaker 9: You literally could not pull yourself away from discoven that movie. 00:33:13 Speaker 10: Blue Moon. 00:33:14 Speaker 2: I'm sorry, Blue Moon was awesome. I know you guys gotta go, Kevin. How many movies have you go for it like I'm an actor? 00:33:20 Speaker 3: Okay, all right, I'm just saying I mean over twenty twenty movies. I'm just saying, Well, I will. 00:33:31 Speaker 9: Say this Dan, Clearly you haven't seen Juana man and my great work in that and some of the other movies where I've made cameos. I mean I thought I was I thought I was incredible in Girls Trip. 00:33:41 Speaker 11: I mean, I don't know, Dan, I'm just telling you, man. 00:33:44 Speaker 9: I mean, and from those moments of being on screen and being just pure magic in my eyes, I think that I understand a great performance when I see, well. 00:33:54 Speaker 12: None of you can touch a runaway bride for Christmas. 00:33:57 Speaker 11: That's true. 00:33:57 Speaker 9: Hold on, she's had a lead before, she's been a leader. I mean, she just trumped us. 00:34:02 Speaker 10: All Dan, I am Emma McGregor. 00:34:05 Speaker 3: Okay, all right, Wow, I. 00:34:07 Speaker 12: Get the guy at the end of the movie, Dan, I get. 00:34:10 Speaker 3: Well, go whoa Hey? 00:34:13 Speaker 5: Dan? 00:34:14 Speaker 8: Why? 00:34:15 Speaker 4: Dan? 00:34:15 Speaker 11: Who wins? Who Wins? 00:34:16 Speaker 3: In Dayton on Tuesday Night? Howard are u? 00:34:19 Speaker 11: NBC? 00:34:20 Speaker 3: I'm going, I hope Howard does. 00:34:23 Speaker 9: I didn't ask you that's your heart, I'm asking your heads. 00:34:29 Speaker 12: Okay, Dan wins? Who wins on Friday? In Saint Louis, Miami or Missouri? 00:34:33 Speaker 3: Missouri? 00:34:35 Speaker 10: Thank you? 00:34:35 Speaker 4: Baby? Yeah? 00:34:37 Speaker 9: I mean, my god, he loves you now, Oh my god, I you I love Michelle. 00:34:46 Speaker 11: Are you putting him in a movie. Is he a lifetime movie? 00:34:49 Speaker 12: You'd like to be my next leading man in my next lifetime Christmas movie? 00:34:52 Speaker 3: Absolutely? 00:34:53 Speaker 10: We have to kiss now, only ones twice? 00:34:59 Speaker 3: Okay, all right, open mouth? 00:35:02 Speaker 11: What is happening here? 00:35:03 Speaker 12: What's happening baby? 00:35:05 Speaker 11: What has happened to the show? 00:35:07 Speaker 7: Dan? 00:35:07 Speaker 10: What is happenings? 00:35:09 Speaker 7: Tell me? 00:35:09 Speaker 11: Okay, that's all I want to know. We go from Who's gonna Win the Howard. 00:35:12 Speaker 9: UNBC game to open mouth kissing with Michelle? 00:35:15 Speaker 3: What the hell is going on? Thank you? Guys? All right, say what just happened? 00:35:26 Speaker 1: I got a while? 00:35:27 Speaker 5: Wow. 00:35:28 Speaker 4: Wow,
