Hour 1 – Cooper Flagg Deserved the NBA ROY, Brendan Sorsby’s Gambling Addiction

Next hour on the program, Thunder Sweep the Sun's Magic. Up three to one on the Pistons and the Nuggets win it in a chippy game against the Timberwolves, Minnesota still up three to two. Cooper Flag won the Rookie of the Year over Kanka Nipple. I've been saying all season long that I thought that he was the obvious choice. Doc Rivers when he joined us at the end of the season, said, boy, you got to understand how con Canipple changed the Hornets. He kind of changed their whole mindset and had that kind of impact on the team. Now, I had not heard that before, and I thought, Okay, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I think he surprised a lot of people. We expected Cooper Flag to be really good, if not great. Conk Nipple was like, man, that guy's pretty good. He's one of those guys when you watch and then you watch again and then you go, no, he's just good and one of the best shooters in the game. We saw that and they made the playoffs. Now, I think what hurt him that play in game where he played poorly, And I don't know if votes were in by then. They're supposed to be regular season. It's a regular season award. But Reggie Miller said a couple of weeks ago he was taking back his Rookie of the Year vote for Conk Nipple because late in the season and certainly in that play in game, did not play well. Now, I don't know if other voters abandoned ship with kan Kinipple, but it was still a really tight race. Twenty six point gap between the top two players for a Rookie of the Year. That's the smallest since the current format began in two thousand and two. That was between Amari Stodemeyer and Yao Ming. You know, kN Kinipple set the rookie record for three pointers. Cooper Flag was so much more than that. When you watch Dallas and I don't think he got enough recognition for the season that he had. He wasn't just a singular specialist as kon kineple now. Canipple is a really good player. He's one of those guys where you say, man, he's a little more athletic. No, he's athletic. He kind of sneaky. No, No, there's nothing sneaky. It's just Conkinipple can play. I'm gonna blame Pauli for this. Pauli is the king of He's kind of sneaky athletic.

Speaker 2: Yeah, he can play, he can play. But Cooper Flag with what he did this year, everybody knew you don't have Kyrie, you don't have ad it's Cooper Flag. You were gearing up for Cooper Flag, and the guy put up tremendous numbers. Twenty one points six point seven rebounds, four and a half assists, one point two steals per game. You know, he's just a little bit older than Lebron was when Lebron came in like six days and he put up numbers similar to Lebron. Flag averaged more points, more rebounds, less assists, and less steals than Lebron did. He's only nineteen coming into the league, and Lebron was nineteen as well when he came in. It was just Flag went that one year to Duke. He should have been his senior year in high school, but he's playing as a freshman at Duke. But some of the other numbers, like Wemby's numbers were awesome, twenty one, three and a half blocks per game, Luca had great numbers. Blake Griffin when he won Tyreek Evans had good numbers. Kevin Durant averaged twenty Tim Duncan twenty one, twelve and two and a half blocks. But those guys were you know, Tim Duncan played four years in college. Alan Iverson came in after a couple of years at Georgetown, averaged twenty three and a half, seven assists, seven and a half shack was twenty three and a half and fourteen rebounds three and a half blocks per game. He had spent a couple of years in college as well. But I thought, and once again I changed my vote when there was the Grant Hill Jason Kidd Rookie of the Year race, I changed it. That morning. I was at NBA Entertainment and I was doing Legends of the Game, Greatest games in NBA history, and I kept going back and forth, back and forth, and it added up. It was a tie. The Rookie of the Year award was a tie between those two that year. I thought that there was going to be a tie this year, not that they would have been an actual tie, but I thought, you know what, maybe you give both of these teams, both of these players the stage, the recognition former teammates as well. But Cooper Flag was the best rookie this year, and he was far more than just that. When you say to a nineteen year old, go out there and you got to get twenty five a night, we need you to score. If konk Nipple hits five threes, we go man. He added to his three point total. Cooper Flag had to go out and win games. Conk Nipple didn't have to win and look what he did. In any other year, you know he might win a Rookie of the Year. Not this year, Cooper Flag was the best rookie by far in my opinion, Yes, Marvin.

Speaker 4: And I think Harry Irving and Anthony Davis being out serge his Workie of the Year candidacy because he had to put up those numbers. Now, if you put up the same numbers as kan k Nipple did the eighteen points, he would have been Rookie of the Year easily because the Mavericks would have had a way better record than they did the season.

Speaker 2: Yeah, and Cooper Flag wouldn't have put up those numbers. I thought he was going to be a fifteen to eight probably five guy at the most, and all of a sudden, it's like, no, no, we need a whole lot more. We need a whole lot more from you. We need like everything you got. And if you're putting up forty points in a few games, he had a few games where you know, thirty and ten, you know those things don't happen. So what he did was pretty spectacular. Yes, Marvin, And.

And you know, when you think about Bird was probably twenty four when he came in. Michael would spend a couple of years in college and Luca. I don't know how old Luca was when he got here. Speaker 2: No, do it? No, he did, he did it. So I can't take that out and show me rookies hit the wall. All these rookies normally hit the wall. They talk about it. There's certain number of games. I don't know what it is. You know, it might be sixty games or fifty games where they hit the wall. They're not used to playing this many games in a season. The fact that Cooper Flag was that much better at the end of the year tells me an awful lot about him.

Speaker 3: Yes, Bully, I had that wall you talked about in March when Cooper Fly got the game fifty. For the next three weeks, he averaged nineteen points a game. That was a dip because he was aired like twenty two before that, But the last three weeks of the season he averaged twenty nine points per game. He also led the NBA minutes the last three weeks of this yeason.

Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, this isn't a normal nineteen year old and he's not sneaky athletic. He's not. He's He's gonna be great. And I think if you watching him play now, you know, I'm going to be a nitpicky here. I didn't like his jump shot when he was in college, and but those are things you work on. I thought that, you know, he wasn't a knockdown shooter. I'd love for him to study Kevin Durant and kind of get in that comfort zone in that two point range. Now, everybody wants to shoot threes, but I think he'll be able to get his shot because he can beat you off the dribble, he can take it to the hoop. But I thought his jump shot was a little slow, and once again I'm just netpicking here, but you get those go to moves that everybody knows what you're going to do and they can't stop you. That's when you know you you elevate your game too. He's going to go over there and he's going to take the jump shot, or he's going to go left and beat me off the dribble, and you know it and you still can't stop it. That's the fun part when you watch younger players, what do they add to their games? Speaking of adding to their games, Detroit needs to add somebody who can score because Caid Cunningham. I'm looking at usage. There's only two players who have the ball more. Their usage rate is higher than him. Man. I think what Orlando is doing is just we're going to make you work for everything. Caid Cunningham has to work for everything and they don't have that second score. That's part of the problem here with Detroit and give Orlando credit. I mean, that was nineteen nineties basketball last night. The entire series has been that way. But Detroit relies on Cad Cunningham too much. He's the only guy who can get a bucket. Jalen Durhan. He can get points, but usually pick and roll or offensive rebounds putbacks. But if you look at great teams, the thunder have SGA and Jalen Williams, Celtics, Tatum and Brown, Nuggets, Joker Murray Warriors when they won, Stephen Clay Bucks when they won, Giannis, Chris Middleton, Lakers, Lebron and ad and turnovers are killing Detroit. You have twenty turnovers last night that created twenty three points for Orlando. It wasn't pretty, but you don't get extra points for aesthetics. It's go out there and win a game. And when people say playoff basketball is different. If you watch last night, that's playoff basketball. Everything we're gonna make you know. This is where you know you have to win this game. If you're Detroit, you're down three to one, now you have to win that game last night, so every possession matters, and the physicality was on display last night, and Orlando didn't back down. I think we think of Detroit as you know, that's a rough and tumble team. Orlando did not back and they didn't play well. Jalen Suggs made one more basket than I did last night. Powl ban Caro had four baskets last night and they won.

And the thing is the Pistons are looking like the first lebron Stint Cavaliers team, where it's him and a bunch of guys. Especially in the playoffs. Speaker 2: Here's the story that is right now one of the biggest stories in sports, and it's Brendan Soorsby and college football's first big gambling scandal. So Soorsby was at Indiana and then he went to Cincinnati and now he's going to Texas Tech. And he was the number one recruit, He was the number one portal recruit, and Texas Tech paid dearly for him. There's talk that it's over five million dollars that they paid. Pete Thammeil. The Mothership reported yesterday the NCAA is investigating the quarterback for making thousands of online bets on a variety of sports via a gambling app. So he's up there for the Heisman this year. He's thought of as maybe a first round draft pick. He is checked into a treatment program. The school announced that yesterday to address a gambling addiction. Now, it used to be that you would have gamblers who would prey on kids who didn't have money, which was most of you know, college players, certainly basketball players. You could give them whatever you were going to give them, five hundred dollars to help fix a game, and then once you fixed one game, then the mafia had you, because then what are you going to do if you don't fix the next game, We're going to tell on you. So now these kids have money, they have disposable income. So it's not that, Hey, we're going to go after those guys to try to fix a game. This this goes back to NIL. If I go back six years ago, seven years ago, now we're getting the first generation of NIL athletes that you do have money and you can bet, and it's so easy to bet. Now you might have buddies they're going to be betting on something, or you're going to be the big guy on campus that you're betting on. Hey, I bet on Indiana to win the game. Well wait a minute, aren't you a quarterback on the team. Yeah, but I'm betting on my team to win. Go back to Pete Rose. When Pete told me many many years ago, first time he ever acknowledged this, He said to me, I bet on the Reds to win every game, as if that was going to take away the sting of Hey, he was gambling on baseball. Hey, I bet on my team, but I bet on them to win. Well, there was more information that didn't come out when Pete told me that because there were certain pitchers. I was told Pete didn't bet on to win games for the Cincinnati Reds. But this going back to this college quarterback Brendan Sowsby. So you're betting and maybe you know it starts out harmless, and I know the playbook here, it starts out harmless, and hey, I'm betting on my team to win. And he wasn't a big factor. They had Michael Pennix junior I think there at the time at Indiana, so he wasn't playing much, and that he transferred to Cincinnati and played pretty well, and now he's at Texas Tech. It's so easy to gamble. Now, this is what I don't understand. And I mean, I'm going to give you, you know, total transparency. I don't have the answers to this. I am trying to get answers to this, but I'll start with this. If I'm going to gamble, and let's say it's you know, DraftKings, FanDuel were sponsored by DraftKings. If if I'm going to put my information in, I would imagine that the database for these gambling apps, they would know who you are. They need to know like your last three or four addresses like that, you know, so they're vetting you. I just don't know how you can gamble and these gambling sites who are trying to protect themselves that they don't know that he's a college quarterback, that you're going to get his address. You have to put your address in unless he's betting through somebody else. But I don't know this, but it seems like just to protect yourself if you're DraftKings or fan Duel or some of these other gambling sites, if you're vetting these you know students, and trust me, go on to college campus and ask or if you have you know kids who are in college right now, how often do you gamble? Not do you gamble? How often do you gamble? It is rampant. Now you might say, what's fifty dollars or what's one hundred dollars? Okay? But then what happens when it's five hundred or when you lose and it's now one thousand dollars? And then you might say, well, I don't have a problem or okay, when do you have a problem? What is a problem?

Speaker 2: Do you have as an athlete. What if you got buddies and you say, hey, you know who's not playing in the game, the running back. You're giving information here. So it is a slippery slope. And I'm not being hypocritical in the sense of I used to gamble. I don't I stopped, I needed to stop. Could I have had a problem. Absolutely, If you're nineteen twenty twenty one, twenty two, twenty three, do you have the wherewithal to go? I gotta stop or man, this could be a problem here and you can't have fun with this, okay, but small bets, But when you chase that's when it becomes a bigger bet. Brendan Soarsby can't be gambling on football, no money, but I know there's ways to do that. Now, what happens to him? You go into a treatment program. I don't know if there's somebody in our audience who can call in, because I don't know the answer to this. When you go into a gambling rehabilitation center, how do they help you stop gambling? Obviously you know AA you know in my family tree, I've been aware of that of what they try to do to help you drug addiction. I don't know how you approach somebody who is a gambler, Like, what are the steps when you go in? Because if I take away drugs from you, take away alcohol from you, well, I take away the opportunity to gamble. Does that rehabilitate you? How does that rehabilitate you? So I'm asking because I would love to pass that on to the audience because I'm not quite sure. But I've said this, I'll say this until I'm done doing this show. We are a big name away from doing real damage to a sport. And this is a pretty big name. Okay, you may not know him, but he is a he's considered one of the probably five to seven best college quarterbacks. Right now, we walk the line. It's a slippery slope. I say this. DraftKings has been a great partner on this show. But I always tell you, if you make it fun, then you know you can you can embrace this. It's when you think you're gonna be out, you're gonna out smart. You're never outsmarting the smart people in Vegas. You just won't. And I always say to people when you gamble, you rent money. You're not keeping it, you're renting it. And you're going to be giving it back pretty much guaranteed, because when I go to Vegas and I see all those big buildings, you help build those big buildings. Yeah, pulling a couple of.

Speaker 3: Things on the soresby accusations. He is accused of betting on Indiana to win when he was a freshman and barely playing. The NCA has a strict policy for about gambling by intercollegiate athletes on any sport, but it doesn't differentiate whether you bet four or against your team. That that would not factor in that much in the violation.

Speaker 2: NC DOUBLEA had a study in twenty twenty three estimating that sixty percent of college students had bet on sports at least once. That number has got to be probably seventy five percent. Now, so this this football player was doing what many of his classmates were doing. But he was getting five million dollars and getting five million dollars from the school. But now, what do you do if you're the NC double A? All right, let him get treatment. Do you let him come back? The NCUBA investigating? What are you going to find out? Did he bet on Indiana to win all the time? Did he bet against Indiana at any point did he give information. Were there are weekends where he didn't bet on his team because he knew something was up. So there's a lot of different factors that are kind of swirling around this. But and Vegas does a great job in policing this because they have to, that's their business. It's just the number of athletes who think nobody is going to notice. And there's a report that the University of Cincinnati knew of his gambling problems when he was there before he transferred to Texas Tech. But I don't know what the NC DOUBLEA is going to do. Go back to Terrell Pror, the Ohio State star quarterback, and he was in some of his teammates they were trading in some of their merchandise, memorabilia, jerseys for tattoos, to get free tattoos. Trelle Pryor was getting suspended for five games. He got suspended going into the NFL before he got there because the NFL. I don't know why they were allowed to do it, but they said, oh, you're leaving college football, you're still going to be punished five games. Jim Tressel never recovered, the Ohio State coach, and that was just for tattoos and he was just the head coach and his players did this. Fast forward to this and you got a player betting on college football.

Speaker 3: Yeah, poling another thing I found. You asked if DraftKings and FANDU and other sportsbooks have mechanisms to identify college athletes. They do, but it's relatively new in the past two three years, and they don't have every player on every team automatically. It has to be there's a lot of information to deal with, but they do identify if a college athlete is betting with their portal.

Speaker 2: Well, you can monitor it. I mean, that's all I'm asking the NC double A if there's a data bank that you can make sure your athletes are registered or you know who they are. Now I know there's thousands of them, but chances are somebody's gambling on something. Maybe it's not football, maybe it was March madness, but it just feels like they're these leagues are all vulnerable here in official And I'll go back to what I've said before. You don't think you're gonna get caught. It's like John day Porter, Michael Porter's brother who was with Toronto Marginal player prop bets. Nobody's going to notice until you put up enough money where Vegas goes, I'm gonna flag that. That's what happens. You tell somebody, it doesn't stop there. You tell them, they tell somebody, who tells somebody who tells somebody who tells somebody who tells someone. Then you get an amount of money where you flag it. Once upon a time, when I was a kiddo, I had, you know, some of these proclivities to do the same thing again and again. So I ended up in one of these spots where someone will come and talk to us. And we had a guy come in from the Gambler's anonymous, and I'll tell you his stories were a lot more terrifying than a lot of the other addictions, because this guy always felt like, I can always take this back, like at one point, this addiction will pay off so much so. He lived in North Jersey. He would put something in a drink with his wife to get her drowsy. Drive to Atlantic City, so hours away places bets get back to North Jersey by the time he had to take his kids to school in the morning. And the entire time he's on the road at the casino, he's telling himself, I'll never do this again. I will never do this again. And then it happens weekly and then daily, and he got caught up in some pretty pretty bad folks. I mean, it's a Jersey And then the second piece I want to say is I think this is just kind of the start because one of the things I got in trouble for was I had a lot of transactional thoughts, and it's a matter of time before one of these, not like a big name show, but probably like a podcast or something that's sponsored by so and so, somebody from one of those companies is going to say, well, what if you worded the game this way if you want to keep your sponsorship, or what if you worded the line this way, or maybe so and so might not be playing, And once that starts, it's over. Once that starts, the integrity of all of the game.

Speaker 2: Well, there is so much information out there if you want to find it, depending on if you're an insider or reporter, there's a lot of information that's exchanged. And it almost feels like it's commonplace where somebody talks about somebody and you ask and oh, yes, somebody a little banged up, probably not playing little things. All you're looking for is an edge, that's it. What is the edge that I have?

Speaker 3: Yeah, Pauline, I went back and looked at the twenty twenty two season for Indiana football, where allegedly Soresby bet on Indiana every game to win. They were four and eight so that means he was a big loser that year. Now it doesn't say in the article that you bet on them to win outright money line or better than the cover, which is a big differentiation. But he would have been a big loser that year if you bet I'm gonna win every week.

There was, you know, supplemental draft there for a while. But if he can't play in college, could he go? You know, somebody's going to have a fifth round, fourth round pick that they could use on this kid. But then do you want to take a chance on somebody who's involved in this in college? Yeah, Paul.

You know you said in your family lineage there's a well versed in AA in different things. You know that when we go into these treatment centers for whatever addiction we have, the addiction is just the symptom, and so there's a behavior or something otherwise that we're trying to gain that feeling and continue to chase after to get that to cover up something else. So you know, the person just doesn't have to look at and say, oh, well, I don't like to I can't go on my phone, I can't push fifty bucks, I can't decide which one. They really have to be willing to look in side and see what is the driving force behind that and be willing to open up a few layers to deal with that to get away from hiding it through these different symptoms, whether it be drugs, alcohol, gambling, or whatever they're in treatment for.
