The housing system with Native American tribes can be a complicated one. But today
we'll hear of a haunting experience even after a place to live was secured.
My name is Edwin, and here is Sarah's true scary story. Back in
two thousand and eight, my mom and I we moved from her hometown to
my hometown. My hometown is northern Montana, on a Native American Indian reservation.
A lot of times on Indian reservations, it's hard to have like fine
rental opportunities just because most reservations, because it's like sovereign land and tribal land.
If we have like tribal housing systems and stuff like that, or it's
just like generational family homes that people just live in through the years, you
really won't find too much opportunity for renting unless it's like a sort of a
bigger city area. But this wasn't. This was like a up in the
mountains, very secluded, just this like small town at the base of the
Rockies. So we moved there. When we first got there, it was
hard because we couldn't find anywhere to rent and we were just trying to get
back on our feet. Then after a while, though, we found my
grandma. My grandma let us stay with her for a time. However,
my grandma my mom growing up, they had some like tens issues and stuff
that they went through. We knew that it was going to be a really
temporary situation that we had to find something fast, and we stayed with her.
My mom got a job at a hardware store. I started school in
the area. But because of my mom's a single parent, like she was
a single parent raising me, my mom was like looking for a place because
stuff was starting to get tense at my grandma's place, and she started like
searching around, and eventually she found this ad from this lady who was renting
out this two story house that she had. My mom she got in touch
with her and I went to see it, and then come to find out,
this lady didn't actually live in the house that she was renting. She
lived in a trailer that was next door. So that was our first red
flag of okay, like why doesn't she live in this house. But because
at the time, we were like desperate to find something and we would just
have intense times with my grandma, so we took it and we moved in
and then after that is when I had to start going to school and then
coming home by myself. For those couple of hours when my mom was at
work after school, she would still be at work, and so I would
have to come to the house by myself, and so I would be there
anytime from three point thirty to six o'clock by myself. For those couple hours
there, I was always by myself. I would say about after the first
month of living there is when I started hearing like sometimes I would hear like
little whispers, and then most often I would hear footsteps in the kitchen.
I would always get up and I would go and look in the kitchen because
I'm like, is there somebody here? Did my mom come home? Because
we had a back door that you have to go into the kitchen to get
to it, and so I thought maybe my mom used the back door,
but there was never anybody there. I was hearing them every day, and
it got so bad to the point where I would I didn't know what was
like a supernatural thing. So I would sit in the living room a little
weapon like a knife or a fork or something sharp that I could defend myself
with. As an eight year old kid at the time, and I was
I would just sit there paranoid until my mom came back from her job.
For a really long time, I lived in fear, in paranoia, and
at one point I heard what sounded like dishes clanging in the sink. There
was one time when I heard something like that and I couldn't. I got
really like spooked because I went inside the kitchen again. The sink didn't have
any dishes, and so that was kind of like what the heck. I
got really scared, and then I went outside because I was like, okay,
like I'm going to wait for my mom. I ended up blocking myself
outside. It was winter. It was winter in up in the Northern Rocky
so it was really cold, and so I sat out there for it must
have been like two hours waiting for my mom. But I was too scared
to go back in the house. Finally, about I would say two months
into living two and a half months of living there, this lady came to
the hardware store my mom worked, and she had this accidental litter of puppies
and she was trying to get rid of them, and so she was just
giving them away, and she had this one, this little puppy, and
my mom she decided to take it because she wanted me to have a companion
at the house, and so she took it from that lady. She brought
it home that day and it was like a little puppy. It was a
little Jack Russell terrier. I named it Buster. After school, me and
Buster would hang out at the house and we would just I would just take
care of this puppy. And at first, for like the first week or
so, it was fine, but then after that I noticed it started to
get more aggressive. I would hear like dishes clean and there would be no
dishes. I would hear footsteps and they would sound like they're getting closer to
me rather than just staying in the kitchen. But usually when it would happen,
there was like the living room setup was like vintage. So there was
this old, like burnt orange leather chair next to this wall that was next
to this little corridor that led into the dining room because the dining room and
the kitchen were separate, and then there was a little couch in the corner.
It was a love seat, and it was one of those floral ones
from back in the day where this burnt orange chair was I would always sit
there and directly like off to my right, like maybe ten feet was the
kitchen corridor. And so when I would sit there after school and I would
hear these footsteps, I would hear it coming from my write ear I would
hear like footsteps, like just over and over again. And I got really
paranoid at that because at first, like I said, I thought it was
somebody either my truting. I thought it was my mom coming home earlier or
something, and I would just I would never see anybody every time I checked.
And as a little kid, I was eight years old at the time,
I didn't know anything really about the supernatural. I wasn't really versed in
that like I am now. I didn't ever really consider that it could have
been like the supernatural or ghost or demon, spirit or whatever the case may
be until after I got the puppy. And then things started to get a
lot more aggressive. After I got the puppy, like a couple of weeks
in, we started hearing the whispers and the footsteps, and I started carrying
the dishes even though there were no dishes. I got really spooked with me
and my dog, and we were sitting downstairs in the living room and we
were hearing these footsteps, and so I decided, okay, like, I'm
gonna go upstairs and upstairs to get up there, there's a staircase, but
the staircase doesn't have a railing, so it was just like a straight shot
from the side of the stairs to the floor. And so I went upstairs
with my puppy and we went into the upstairs bedroom and I locked myself in
there with him. We just sat in there and watched movies for a while.
I was trying to go downstairs to grab something, and I was trying
to coax Buster to come out with me because I didn't want to go down
there along, but he was too scared. So I would open the door
and I'd be like, come on, and I would do all these calls
to him, and he just wouldn't move, like he was terrified to come
out there with me. And so eventually I was like, Okay, I'm
gonna go. I'm gonna do this real quick. I'll be right back,
like it shouldn't be no problem. And then I go. I walk out
to the top of the staircase, and as I'm approaching the staircase and looking
down I see this like flash of black from the my preferal vision, and
it was so strange because it was like I got this not really a sense
of dread, but like a sense of like anxiety, like something was about
to happen. And then right after that, I feel like this force of
against me. It's like somebody I don't know, I don't even know how
to scribe as like a wind or something. But I didn't seel like a
physical push, but it felt like a wind. And then once I felt
this wind, I had somehow I ended up slipping and I fell all the
way down the stairs. And at one point when I was going down the
stairs, I was like close to the side where there was no railing,
and so if I would have slipped just a little bit, I would have
fallen to the floor. But thankfully during that time, like my mom,
you know, she raised me to call on Jesus because she raised me as
a Christian, And so while I was going down, I was like,
oh my gosh, my God help me. I ended up making it to
the bottom of the stairs. I wasn't like hurt or anything. I was
very frightened, but I got this feeling like this gut feeling suddenly to lean
forward. The setup of the staircase is that the staircase with no railing,
and then at the bottom of the stairs there's this giant horse picture. It's
like a painting of a horse, and it's in this really thick like bronze
frame and it was attached to the wall like right at the base of the
staircase. I came and I landed and like hit the wall like with my
back, and then I got that gut feeling Okay, get up, get
up now, and so I do, and as I'm like moving forward with
my back, the picture of the horse it comes off the nail and it
lands like right behind me. If I didn't listen to the gut feeling,
I would have gotten hit with that bronze frame. I get up and I'm
like, I'm frightened. I start crying because like at that point I figured
out, okay, this is I can't ignore this. Whatever this is,
like, I can't ignore it. Finally, I tell my mom and I'm
like, Mom, like this stuff is happening in this house. I don't
w know what's going on. She kind of had an idea that it was
going on, but like she couldn't. She'd ignored it at the time because
we were in that desperate situation. But once I told her, like what
was going on, that's when she was like, okay, Like we need
to anoint the house. To anoint a house a way to protect and keep
evil away and drive out on welcome entities in a house with oil is using
Christian religions. But what this unleashes, at least in this case, something
that nobody was expecting. The rest of Sarah's story is coming up right after
this stay with us. Hello Fresh is going to give us more time to
spend outside this spring as they continue to deliver the best you get pre portioned
ingredients and easy to prepare recipes right to your door, Listen to stories,
go through your daily cemetery walks, and enjoy the warmer weather because HelloFresh is
taking care of dinner for us. I like that you use up all of
the food with HelloFresh, unlike when you buy and spend too much at the
store. That way, you cut down on your food waste by at least
twenty three percent, and it's cheaper than takeout. With this last delivery,
I took one of the recipes to my mom, and even though she mostly
makes Mexican food at home, she learned about new ingredients and spices, Asian,
Mediterranean, and new takes on Mexican inspired dishes. She loved it.
Everyone gets excited when the HelloFresh box arrives, and I hope she uses my
code. Go to HelloFresh dot com slash true scary fifty and use code true
scary fifty for fifty percent off, plus your first box chip's free. Again.
That's HelloFresh dot com slash true scary fifty and use code true scary fifty
to get fifty percent off and your first box ships free. To try America's
number one milk. It do after that, as she goes through, and
she has this little bottle of oil that she calls anointing oil. In the
Christian Church, you use that a lot of times. You put it on
your hands, and you like go and you touch the surfaces of a new
place and just pray over the place, and you pray out like any demon,
spirits, any forces. You ask like the only spirit to come into
the house in a way. It's like when a priest comes and blesses the
house, but in the Christian way and so we did that. After that,
for a couple of weeks, it was things went well like We didn't
have really any encounters after that until one night my mom and I we slept
in the same bedroom at the time, and I woke up and I hear
this this almost like this raspberry noise, and I share this really harsh breathing
followed by these like raspberry sounds, and so I look over because my mom
and I had two twin beds and if they were separate from on either side
of the room, I look over to her and she's almost like she's snoring,
but she's not. So she would breathe and then when she would bliw
the air out, it would be like like that, over and over again.
At first, I thought it was funny, so I woke her up.
I was like, well, what's going on. She didn't think much
of it, and we went back to sleep. I was laying there at
wake for a little bit because I was just now trying to go back to
sleep and stuff like that, and then I hear it again and I look
over and she's doing the same thing. So I keep waking her up.
At first, she wants me to leave her alone, she's annoyed, but
it just kept happening like a couple of times. At that point, I
wake her up and I'm like, are you okay. She's like, I
don't know. She felt like some sort of like somebody was like moving her
lips while she was trying to sleep. At that point, I got pretty
spooked. Another thing about this room is that it's like in the attic sort
of and in this one corner of the room there's this gaia wall mirror.
I look at the mirror and I see this like that same like flash,
not a shadow, but like a black flash. I get scared, and
I'm like, okay, like we need to do something, like we need
to annoy the house again. We need to do something because whatever was here
before we anointed the house, it's back. At that point, my mom
was, Okay, I think we need to move because whatever this is,
it's bound to the house. And so we start figuring out how we're gonna
move out. And it was a really hard situation to be in because we
were on the tribal housing list, but the tribal housing list was like years
long, so even though we were in line to get a house, it
wouldn't be for like a couple of years, and like I said, there
was no rental opportunities. We just left her home and our place over there
to come all the way out here. We didn't really have anything to go
back to. Eventually, though, my mom she started calling around to some
of her friends that she grew up with, and this lady that she's a
nurse in this town that we lived in, and her and I and my
mom we all kind of knew each other, like when I was little and
I was really little. This nurse lady, she's okay, like you could
come stay with us. And so we start packing our things, start trying
to get out of this house. And we call Elaine, which is the
lady that rented us the house in the first place. We asked her,
like, okay, you don't live in this house, but there's things that's
going on in this house. Can we tell us like maybe why? Is
there any sort of reason? Maybe? She said that her family they're very
traditional, like Native American traditions, and so they would practice ceremonies and stuff
inside the house. Of course, the history with the Native Americans and Christianity
and colonization and stuff like that, it's not an easy history. There's a
lot of bad blood in that. What we figured out from that is,
Okay, whatever spirit is getting released from the ceremonies that are being practiced in
this house before we moved in, that it doesn't like this because we're Christians.
At that point, I'm like, okay, we know what's going on.
We're going to move out. So we start packing up our things.
On the last night before we move out to my mom's friend's house, I'm
in the living room again and I'm packing up something, and my mom's in
the kitchen and our dog, he has a little litter box and a little
pea pat inside of the dining room area, and so he's in there and
we're over here packing and then all of a sudden, I start hearing my
dog whimpering like really loud, like it sounded like he was in pain.
I run into the dining room and my mom comes and she follows me,
and we see my dog and he's laid out like flat. He's laid out
flat on the floor and he's whimpering in pain like he's being stepped on.
I'm terrified. I'm crying, and I'm like, Mom, like, what's
going on? My mom. She steps in and she starts rebuking the devil.
She starts casting out evil spirit stuff like that, and whatever was stepping
on my dog, it stops. But at that point we knew, Okay,
if we don't hurry up and get all the way packed up and leave
tonight, because it was like ten o'clock at night at that point, on
the last night that we were there, if we don't lead tonight like whatever
this is, it's going to manifest further and it's going to probably attack one
of us. We got packed up as fast as we could, and then
we left that night to my mom's friend's house. And my mom's friend's house
is it's a little bit of a ways out of town, so we had
to drive out of town about ten miles in the dark to get to her
house. In our perspective, it was much better than staying in that house
until morning. I remember when I was in boarding school, I told it
just as a fun, little scary stories night that we were having. And
at first, yeah, they're spooped. We've only maybe told like a handful
of people about it, and at first they're spooped and they're entertained. But
then we tell them like what we did to get rid of it, like
anointing the house and praying it out and rebuking evil spirits and stuff like that,
and then immediately they shut us down because it's that's not how we do
it or that's not what we practice, so we don't believe in that.
And so I don't think that's the reason then, especially because I went to
a Native American boarding school, and so when I would tell the other Native
students, okay, we figured out like it was whenever spirits were released from
them doing ceremonies in the house, doesn't like us because we're Christians. They
would get on the defense like, oh no, that's not true, and
they would just attack us for our faith. At the end of the day,
we know what we went through and we know what happened in that house.
We haven't really told anybody in a really long time. Is actually the
first time I'm talking about it in maybe five years. I hadn't really heard
other similar stories as specific in the sense like Native American spirits or anything.
But what I know is that when you do like Native American ceremonies a lot
of time, as likely as Christians, we believe that it conjures up evil
spirits, poltergeist doing as far as things like that, those things get sent
out and released wherever they're planted, which is that's why these places have attachments
like that, just because the ceremonies they're considered very sacred. When you have
a sacred ceremony at a certain location, a lot of times that location,
I've noticed it either kind of withers, like if it's on a piece of
land, the land will wither. We have a mountain up in Browning,
which is where I'm from, my hometown that we moved into, and there's
a mountain on the base of the Rockies called Chief Mountain. Back in the
early nineties, they went up there and it's like a At the time,
it was like a really tall sort of plateau mountain. But at the time
in the early nineties they went and they did ceremonies up there, and then
shortly after they did ceremonies up there, a part of the mountain fell off,
so now it's a shorter plateau than it was in the early nineties.
Then that house too. We went back in twenty nineteen for Powow, which
is like a reunion for the tribe and we all get together and we sing
songs and do dances and stuff like that. So we went back there in
twenty nineteen and we went past the house, and it looks pretty much in
the same position like condition that it was when we left in two thousand and
eight. And I have seen like cars and stuff in front of it,
so I know that she probably rented it out to somebody else. So I
don't really know how they're doing inside that house, But every time we drive
past it, I still get that like haunting, traumatizing dread from my time
there and what I experienced. Every time I've moved into a new place,
or I even when I go to a new place like a school or somewhere
where I'm going to be spending an extended period of time, I always take
anointing oil with me, and I always pray off the place first thing when
I get there now, just because it's it helps sure. If there's things
attached to those spaces, they do come back. But if you keep anointing
the place out every few weeks or so, I've noticed that it stays clean
and peaceful for a lot longer. By the time I'm out of there,
It's like I haven't really experienced much, and so I'm really grateful for that.
My mom, she's kind of always been in touch with the supernatural since
she was a little girl, because when she was a little girl, she
had some traumas and stuff like that happened to her and it just opened her
worlds up to we live in two different realms, and especially as Native Americans,
like we know we lived in two different realms when one is the supernatural
realm and then one is the reality realm. When I was in college actually,
and she visited me, she was in my dorm room and she was
saying like, Okay, I'm seeing like this dark shadow. I'm seeing this
dark shadow. She kept telling me that, and me at the time,
I had annoys it out and so I didn't really feel anything. But she
kept saying that she would see these things, these dark shadows, and she
would go through she would pray the place out, and then after that it
would pretty much be gone and we wouldn't really feel any presences for a really
long time. She's always been really in touch with the supernaturals. Every now
and then, she still does have those experiences where she'll see shadows or she'll
have dreams about the supernatural, and it's really worked for her because she's very
in tune. Like she, you can discern things really easily. For a
long time, I've had like anxiety from the whole experience to where it was
hard to express my feelings just because of how they were received when I first
told people about this in boarding school and how they got really defensive and mad
at me for it when it was my fault. But that caused me to
have some anxiety for a really long time that I think I'm just now coming
out of. And I really believe that talking about it today is one of
the steps that I'm taking to just be more vulnerable about my experiences and what
I went through in that house. Thank you so much for letting me come
on and just say that, because I think it's really important to like let
people know, Okay, Yeah, attachments can be a part of places,
they can be a part of people, and you need to watch out for
yourself as far as the supernatural realm goes, because supernatural realm is just as
real as reality. Subscribe to the podcast for free to get next week's story.
