<v Speaker 1>Hey, everybody, welcome to Game Mess Mornings with Me Jeff Grub,
<v Speaker 1>your host from giant bomb dot com.
<v Speaker 2>Thank you for tuning in.
<v Speaker 1>In this episode, we're going to be talking about Ditto
<v Speaker 1>carrying Nintendo on his back, and we may be getting
<v Speaker 1>multiple new PlayStations soon. Okay, one of them's a toy.
<v Speaker 1>It's gonna be a good one because we have Janet
<v Speaker 1>Chowa on the show.
<v Speaker 2>Jan how are you doing.
<v Speaker 3>I'm doing great. I'm gonna say that I have the
<v Speaker 3>unique claim to fame that I have not only been
<v Speaker 3>on this program twice this week, but both iterations of
<v Speaker 3>your regular decular Game Mess Mornings and the special bonus
<v Speaker 3>edition of Game Mikey Mornings.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>I appreciate you holding down the fort. Thank you to
<v Speaker 1>Mikey for a running the show while I was gone.
<v Speaker 1>I want to come out and get on the record,
<v Speaker 1>jan I got to talk about something, all right, I listen.
<v Speaker 1>I might have said that I do not like Launch. Look,
<v Speaker 1>that does not mean I don't think it shouldn't be
<v Speaker 1>called Launch. Look, no, Mikey likes it. It's he's the
<v Speaker 1>one doing the work. He's an owner of the website,
<v Speaker 1>and it doesn't matter as long as it doesn't go
<v Speaker 1>on YouTube.
<v Speaker 2>All right, that's all.
<v Speaker 3>That's well, then it matters that it matters.
<v Speaker 1>That's well, yeah, exactly, well that's what he said, he
<v Speaker 1>and he already he already agreed to that. So my
<v Speaker 1>point is, like, why are we getting all hung up
<v Speaker 1>on it. I'm I'm backing my boy Mikey on it.
<v Speaker 1>We can put it on the as. That is the
<v Speaker 1>name on the website.
<v Speaker 2>Let's do it. Launch. Look everybody, it's here.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, we did it. But yeah, look, Jan I missed
<v Speaker 1>you guys. I'm glad that I could be back doing stuff.
<v Speaker 1>You guys seem to be holding things down. Dan got
<v Speaker 1>to not punch alligators? What happened there?
<v Speaker 2>So?
<v Speaker 3>I think everyone was telling Dan that in the RI
<v Speaker 3>seven DLC the end of Zoe, that a major component
<v Speaker 3>is punching alligators. It turns out you can't do that
<v Speaker 3>at all.
<v Speaker 1>How you try to punch the alligators, you very specifically
<v Speaker 1>will fail.
<v Speaker 3>Yes, So now I'm starting to question Ben Hanson's sense
<v Speaker 3>of reality. Yeah, but we did get a power up
<v Speaker 3>at the near the very tail end of the DLC
<v Speaker 3>that would turn the game into God Hand. So you know,
<v Speaker 3>I'm curious to see what Capcom has planned for R
<v Speaker 3>nine dlc IF and when we get there, always.
<v Speaker 1>A good reminder that Capcom knows exactly what Resident Evil
<v Speaker 1>is when they're like, let's just make it God hand,
<v Speaker 1>all right, we should get into things and explain ourselves. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>we're Giant Bomb, we're Internet video game defaces, but we're
<v Speaker 1>independent games media out here on our own.
<v Speaker 2>We could use your help.
<v Speaker 1>If you go to giant bomb dot com slash join,
<v Speaker 1>become a premium member. That helps ensure that we can
<v Speaker 1>continue doing what we're doing over here, keep making the
<v Speaker 1>stuff that you like that we like, but we need
<v Speaker 1>that help. If you can't do so, tell a friend
<v Speaker 1>that is also super helpful if they can find out
<v Speaker 1>about what we're doing over here. And then yeah, we
<v Speaker 1>really appreciate everyone who has shown up so far. It's noticed.
<v Speaker 1>It means the world.
<v Speaker 2>Thank you.
<v Speaker 1>As far as this show goes most weekdays, I Jeff Grubb,
<v Speaker 1>willhelp piece your gaming life back together. That includes breaking
<v Speaker 1>news and maybe even some of our own original reporting.
<v Speaker 1>For all these topics, I'll get the input of a
<v Speaker 1>bona fide expert who will make me look smart. If
<v Speaker 1>you are watching live on Twitch, welcome you can always
<v Speaker 1>listen to the show later on podcast feeds by searching
<v Speaker 1>for Games Mornings, or find the RSS feed on giant
<v Speaker 1>bomb dot com. You can also catch the show later
<v Speaker 1>with chapters and timestamps on YouTube.
<v Speaker 2>Hello Lotube, all right, everybody, let's do this. We got
<v Speaker 2>the news.
<v Speaker 1>Let's start with Pokemon Pacopia surpassing two point two million
<v Speaker 1>units sold in.
<v Speaker 2>The first four days. That's quite a bit.
<v Speaker 1>Sophie McAvoy over at a jetab Is basically wraps that
<v Speaker 1>up and says that shortly after launch, Nintendo's share price
<v Speaker 1>has also jumped by ten point five percent. It's actually
<v Speaker 1>up even more than that now. Yeah, it seems like
<v Speaker 1>this might be doing work. As the kids say, this
<v Speaker 1>Pucopia is catching on, Like, I think like something happened
<v Speaker 1>in the week's leading up to it from the previous
<v Speaker 1>where I'm like, I think this might be big. Even
<v Speaker 1>when I was saying that, I didn't think it was
<v Speaker 1>going to be this big jam And this feels like
<v Speaker 1>it could easily turn into the next Animal Crossing, selling
<v Speaker 1>twenty twenty five million copies over the next little while.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, a lot of my friends are are not super
<v Speaker 3>into games, and you know, more of your casual gamer
<v Speaker 3>have been asking me, yo, is it worth it to
<v Speaker 3>get a whole switch to and this game? Right, I've
<v Speaker 3>only ever really played Animal Crossing stuff like Overcooked and
<v Speaker 3>other similar games, and I'll and I'll generally I'll tell
<v Speaker 3>them like, hey, if you can swing it, I would
<v Speaker 3>swing yes.
<v Speaker 1>If you're looking to have the same sort of experience
<v Speaker 1>and feelings that you get from Animal Crossing, yeah, this
<v Speaker 1>is delivering on those in a way that it's not
<v Speaker 1>just the game, right, it is everyone else playing it
<v Speaker 1>and sharing stuff and having a huge group of people
<v Speaker 1>to go share the stuff with, whether it's like in
<v Speaker 1>your DMS, in your discord, or just on social media.
<v Speaker 1>Like that's you can't.
<v Speaker 2>Buy that, Actually it's really hard to get.
<v Speaker 1>So pairing that up with what is a really solid
<v Speaker 1>one of these kinds of social simulators, they really got
<v Speaker 1>something right.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>And on top of that, the other thing I make
<v Speaker 3>sure to let everyone else know is that like, hey,
<v Speaker 3>you're not as limited by the clock as you are
<v Speaker 3>in Animal Crossing, like you don't reach the end of
<v Speaker 3>a day and really can't do anything.
<v Speaker 2>But if you like that stuff.
<v Speaker 1>It's also still in there, Like you can build a
<v Speaker 1>building where it's like, oh, this is going to be
<v Speaker 1>ready tomorrow. Cool because that has happened. That's something to
<v Speaker 1>look forward to. But it's not like, okay, and now
<v Speaker 1>it can't do anything else. It's really smart about that. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>it's not just one carrot on a stick. It's several
<v Speaker 1>carrots on a stick to keep going, and you can
<v Speaker 1>keep being busy. And if you get tired of one biome,
<v Speaker 1>if you've progressed far enough in the game, you can
<v Speaker 1>head over to another one, perhaps another one, and then
<v Speaker 1>just start doing what your your heart wants to do
<v Speaker 1>in the game. Perhaps you want to terraform the island.
<v Speaker 1>Perhaps this time you want to like actually make homes
<v Speaker 1>for people, and and it's it's great. There's always something
<v Speaker 1>to do in the game.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, it's almost intimidating.
<v Speaker 1>How once I realized how much stuff there was to do,
<v Speaker 1>I'm like, do I want to like stay on this
<v Speaker 1>treadmill so I'm confident enough to use all these systems
<v Speaker 1>And I'm like, you know what, I'm just gonna pick
<v Speaker 1>and choose what I want to engage with and uh,
<v Speaker 1>and then even as I'm doing that, some of the
<v Speaker 1>stuff that was formerly like intimidating it's like, oh no,
<v Speaker 1>I am kind of curious. I should start working on
<v Speaker 1>that as well. And the game onboards. You onto that
<v Speaker 1>stuff eventually, and it's it's just really well done. I
<v Speaker 1>did was like bummed out. I was like, as soon
<v Speaker 1>as I was about to leave, I'm like, we should
<v Speaker 1>have done a video where it's like, what would I
<v Speaker 1>leave out? Like not cigarettes anymore? Jane, You're getting you're
<v Speaker 1>getting healthy. But I was gonna make my little Pacopia
<v Speaker 1>attraction thing for Jana Choa. I was gonna put out
<v Speaker 1>Hennessy and stuff like that, and Alyssa Liu poster, just
<v Speaker 1>just things like I'm like, oh look look everyone, look
<v Speaker 1>the grass is shaking. And then jam pops out. So
<v Speaker 1>of course I have that idea as soon as I'm leaving,
<v Speaker 1>and I was like trying to think what mine would be,
<v Speaker 1>and it's like just a bunch of dad games.
<v Speaker 3>I think, oh, okay, that's actually a good idea. We
<v Speaker 3>should we Okay, someone write this down. We should all
<v Speaker 3>list what our habitat would be.
<v Speaker 1>All right, hang, I'm gonna remind me tomorrow before you know,
<v Speaker 1>on before the BombCast on Tuesday morning, to do this
<v Speaker 1>thing with our Pokemon habitats all right, cool, that'll remind me. Hey,
<v Speaker 1>I was kind of glad that we got to hang
<v Speaker 1>up for a little bit. But it's like, next time
<v Speaker 1>when I'm an SF, I'm gonna make it a Jana
<v Speaker 1>Choa trip. I want to just like go there and
<v Speaker 1>have you show me all the real stuff. Too busy
<v Speaker 1>at GDC this year, Yes, GDC, Grub. I have always
<v Speaker 1>been around the periphery of it, never actually gone to it,
<v Speaker 1>and I as for like ten years for me, geez,
<v Speaker 1>and from my understanding, grub. Also, the Moscone Center must
<v Speaker 1>have changed significantly since the last time you went. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>but I don't know if a lot of people are
<v Speaker 1>just more excited or just general attendees.
<v Speaker 3>GDC proper in terms of the exhibition floor hadn't even
<v Speaker 3>opened until yesterday, but when you gave your talk on Monday,
<v Speaker 3>it was still super packed.
<v Speaker 2>It was nice to see.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I guess we could like talk about it a
<v Speaker 1>little bit because it's like, yeah, I really did.
<v Speaker 2>It took up all my time. I went to a
<v Speaker 2>bunch of panels, and like, one thing I.
<v Speaker 1>Noticed is like, oh, yeah, there's still people who are
<v Speaker 1>super passionate about this. And even though a lot of
<v Speaker 1>the talks are still kind of focused on, Hey, how
<v Speaker 1>can we build these machines so they can extract more
<v Speaker 1>value or so that you can find the money. Of course,
<v Speaker 1>it's a business, so that's what it's going to be
<v Speaker 1>the focus. But it's like, no, there's just a lot
<v Speaker 1>of people here who want to make cool video games.
<v Speaker 2>And it was packed. You're right.
<v Speaker 1>It was cool to see despite the fact that not
<v Speaker 1>a lot of people from overseas, but still a few
<v Speaker 1>people from overseas, and for as danger said as it
<v Speaker 1>must be to travel here, I'm very thankful that they
<v Speaker 1>showed up because the show was better for them, as
<v Speaker 1>of course it was. It always is, so yeah, it
<v Speaker 1>was great to see those people. All right, let's keep
<v Speaker 1>going here. Xbox unveils first tech details of its next
<v Speaker 1>generation console, co named Project Helix. This is from Vicky
<v Speaker 1>Blake at gi dot Biz. Xbox has revealed limited technical
<v Speaker 1>details about its next console co named Project Helix. Addressing
<v Speaker 1>attendees at gdc VP. Next of Next Generation Jason Ronald
<v Speaker 1>confirmed Helix will deliver high performance and provide the ultimate
<v Speaker 1>player first experience. Blah blah blah. What are the specifics here?
<v Speaker 1>They have a couple of things. They are working on
<v Speaker 1>a system on a chip, an SOOC with AMD, just
<v Speaker 1>like their previous consoles or their most recent consoles. They
<v Speaker 1>are also really focused on neural rendering. I can ever
<v Speaker 1>say neural it's kind of like basically just upscaling and
<v Speaker 1>all these techniques of machine learning to make sure that
<v Speaker 1>they can run games on modest settings and get really
<v Speaker 1>good visuals. And they have a whole stack of stuff
<v Speaker 1>they're talking about making that the focus of for this console,
<v Speaker 1>because they also want to have super duper improved ray tracing.
<v Speaker 1>So that's one of the buzzwords we're still getting here.
<v Speaker 1>And then beyond that, they're saying, hey, everything that is
<v Speaker 1>an Xbox game should run on this device, and you
<v Speaker 1>should expect alpha hardware to go out in twenty twenty seven,
<v Speaker 1>so like that's early developer alpha hardware so they could
<v Speaker 1>start making games for this device. It still sounds like, Okay,
<v Speaker 1>they're very dedicated to this thing. I get the sense
<v Speaker 1>they're trying to treat it like an old Xbox would
<v Speaker 1>have been treated at this point in its lifetime, of
<v Speaker 1>like let's go to developers and try to get them
<v Speaker 1>excited to support this platform.
<v Speaker 2>Part of me though, is like, oh they are.
<v Speaker 1>It still sounds like they're trying to set this up
<v Speaker 1>as the equivalent of like one of their surface tablets,
<v Speaker 1>where it's, hey, let's make a reference version of what
<v Speaker 1>PC and Xbox hardware can be, and we'll stand back
<v Speaker 1>sell maybe ten to fifteen million of those, and then
<v Speaker 1>our third party partners can maybe do something similar. And
<v Speaker 1>does that strategy sound like something that is exciting for
<v Speaker 1>you as someone who might want to get hardware and
<v Speaker 1>something that could get you know, support from developers.
<v Speaker 2>I don't know, Grub.
<v Speaker 3>I can't say that I have any excitement for whatever
<v Speaker 3>Project Helix is supposed to be or the PlayStation six,
<v Speaker 3>mostly because greb like, I'm just thinking about how insanely
<v Speaker 3>expensive both of these consoles are going to be. We've
<v Speaker 3>already seen the Steam Machine, which is something I was
<v Speaker 3>vaguely curious about checking out in terms of thinking about
<v Speaker 3>acquiring for the home get soft delayed into vaguely twenty
<v Speaker 3>twenty six. I just don't know what these consoles would
<v Speaker 3>be able to do that I can't do already, or
<v Speaker 3>what they could provide to me outside of like exclusive games.
<v Speaker 3>But also Grub like it takes a while for developers
<v Speaker 3>to get accustomed to a new tool set for a console.
<v Speaker 3>So even then at launch, whenever this would theoretically be,
<v Speaker 3>they're not. Everything is going to have the juice.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, And it's the kind of thing where it's like, okay,
<v Speaker 1>they are they talking about having Like when a person
<v Speaker 1>makes a game for this device, are they making a
<v Speaker 1>PC game or an Xbox game?
<v Speaker 2>Like? What does that look like?
<v Speaker 1>It probably is a PC game because this thing is
<v Speaker 1>a PC underneath, and Xbox games will happen to work
<v Speaker 1>on it. It's kind of how I would think about it.
<v Speaker 1>So then the question is stuff like Xbox Live Gold,
<v Speaker 1>which is it's not called gold gold anymore, but you
<v Speaker 1>do need a subscription to play games online if they're
<v Speaker 1>a premium price game like a Call of Duty on
<v Speaker 1>your Xbox.
<v Speaker 2>Is that that's going away, right because this is a PC.
<v Speaker 1>So it's it's just this thing where Okay, there's a
<v Speaker 1>lot of questions here. And while they might be, you know,
<v Speaker 1>presenting it as something that was as big of a
<v Speaker 1>deal to them as an Xbox One X or an
<v Speaker 1>Xbox Series X and S, I don't think that is
<v Speaker 1>actually the long term goal. And when I have more
<v Speaker 1>questions than answers right now, which is you know, normal
<v Speaker 1>for this point of the announcement cycle for sure, But
<v Speaker 1>this time around, when I have more questions than answers,
<v Speaker 1>that's not exciting to me.
<v Speaker 2>That's I continue to be worried.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, that's if anything, that's more concerning Grub if we
<v Speaker 3>also continue to be to have more questions pop up
<v Speaker 3>and I just don't know who needs this right now.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, And I think, you know, especially when we start
<v Speaker 1>talking about price and all this stuff, people are going
<v Speaker 1>to keep asking that question.
<v Speaker 2>It's it's going to be difficult to answer that.
<v Speaker 3>Like, like grub, I have friends that will are all
<v Speaker 3>about getting the newest iPhone of that year, Like they'll
<v Speaker 3>upgrade every single year. They don't care what the new
<v Speaker 3>specs are. They just want what is new. Yeah, that
<v Speaker 3>attitude is kind of changed within like the last two
<v Speaker 3>like last year to the last two years, mostly because
<v Speaker 3>of like everything else in the proximity of electronics is
<v Speaker 3>just getting progressively more expensive.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, you know, at the very least, it does seem
<v Speaker 1>like they are trying to take a step in a direction.
<v Speaker 1>It is not like Xbox is getting shoved completely to
<v Speaker 1>the side.
<v Speaker 2>They are.
<v Speaker 1>You know, they had something to say about, you know,
<v Speaker 1>the last group of leaders and their strategy of everything
<v Speaker 1>is in Xbox and they came in and like, hey,
<v Speaker 1>that we completely disagree with that and we're going to
<v Speaker 1>go in a different direction. It's like, okay, well what
<v Speaker 1>does that look like? And it's like, oh, they don't
<v Speaker 1>know right away. This is this new leadership is like
<v Speaker 1>very very new, like they just went in a few
<v Speaker 1>weeks ago. So it's like, I'm not surprised again that
<v Speaker 1>they don't have a bunch of answers. So as they
<v Speaker 1>start talking about it in this way and it's like, okay,
<v Speaker 1>they at least seem like they are trying to form answers.
<v Speaker 2>Okay.
<v Speaker 1>I just don't know how much patience I have for
<v Speaker 1>that brand anymore, because it's you know, I care about
<v Speaker 1>playing games, and I'm gonna be able to play any
<v Speaker 1>game they make on any a bunch.
<v Speaker 2>Of other devices. So this is for me personally.
<v Speaker 1>Something where I'm like, huh, I'm not sure if I
<v Speaker 1>need to be pan attention quite yet.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>For the position that Xbox has put themselves in, Grub,
<v Speaker 3>I don't think of them in my head at least anymore.
<v Speaker 3>As like a console platform. I just think of them
<v Speaker 3>as a gigantic publisher now where despite you know, gamers
<v Speaker 3>cornering Asha Sharma into saying that console exclusives are coming back,
<v Speaker 3>I don't believe that's actually the case because Xbox would
<v Speaker 3>be so much based off of everything they've already acquired.
<v Speaker 3>If they're going to limit the release of all of
<v Speaker 3>their games to whatever the next console is, it just
<v Speaker 3>wouldn't work.
<v Speaker 2>Yep. I agree. There is more out of this though.
<v Speaker 1>Windows elevens Steam deckish streamlined Xbox Gaming UI comes to
<v Speaker 1>all PCs in April. This is from Andrew Cunningham at
<v Speaker 1>Ours Technica. When a sus and Microsoft launched the rog
<v Speaker 1>Xbox ally X last summer, it came with a bespoke
<v Speaker 1>controller driven full screen interface running on top of Windows eleven.
<v Speaker 1>Handheld was still running Windows under the hood, and you
<v Speaker 1>could still bring up the typical Windows desktop at any time,
<v Speaker 1>but it defaulted to the full screen Gaming UI, then
<v Speaker 1>called either the Xbox Experience or Handheld or Xbox FSE,
<v Speaker 1>depending on who you asked. And when Microsoft said it
<v Speaker 1>would be available on all Windows PCs at some point
<v Speaker 1>in twenty twenty six, it meant it meant April, So okay,
<v Speaker 1>this is one of another one of those things where
<v Speaker 1>it's like, is this just a one off they put
<v Speaker 1>out the rock Xbox ally, is this going to improve?
<v Speaker 1>And it sounds like no, this is part of taking
<v Speaker 1>steps towards building whatever this new Xbox is, and this
<v Speaker 1>fse Xbox experience is going to end up on all
<v Speaker 1>of these devices here in a little bit. Okay, Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>this is another one where I'm like, I definitely want
<v Speaker 1>this to be improved on any sort of Windows device
<v Speaker 1>because I do want to use Windows handheld Jana, Like
<v Speaker 1>what just came out Mare from Bungie Marathon, pretty famous
<v Speaker 1>for saying that they weren't going to make their anti
<v Speaker 1>chet for Destiny work on the Steam Deck because it's
<v Speaker 1>Linux and they didn't want to worry about all the
<v Speaker 1>headaches that that would entail, so they're like, look, just
<v Speaker 1>go play on a Windows device.
<v Speaker 2>Marathon is here.
<v Speaker 1>It makes it pretty clear it's not going to work
<v Speaker 1>on a Steam deck and it probably wouldn't work visually,
<v Speaker 1>but just you know, if there was an improved Steam Deck,
<v Speaker 1>they wouldn't have the support for that. I want a
<v Speaker 1>reason to keep going. Hey, these developers don't want to
<v Speaker 1>have to do the extra work. I want to pick
<v Speaker 1>up my Windows device just sort of boot up one
<v Speaker 1>of these games. Every time I do that, though, if
<v Speaker 1>I haven't used it in a month, it makes me
<v Speaker 1>tear my hair out because I have to update five
<v Speaker 1>different things and I always forget where they are because
<v Speaker 1>it's in dumb little apps to the side and in
<v Speaker 1>its and it's in the Windows settings, and it's in
<v Speaker 1>the AMD launcher or whatever.
<v Speaker 2>So fix that, make it better.
<v Speaker 1>And I hope that they are motivated enough at least
<v Speaker 1>by the Xbox to get that done.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, that is my hope is that if they are. Well,
<v Speaker 3>that's also my confusion, Grub is that, yeah, they have
<v Speaker 3>definitely pulled away from the ethos that everything is an Xbox,
<v Speaker 3>yet they still want to create this streamlined experience when
<v Speaker 3>for Windows when it comes to playing games. Yet this
<v Speaker 3>isn't an Xbox, this is Windows.
<v Speaker 2>Okay.
<v Speaker 3>Can I play games on this sometimes? And again, like
<v Speaker 3>you said, depending if you can manage to trigger the
<v Speaker 3>right sequence of events at the right timing to make
<v Speaker 3>sure a game runs. For the folks that want this
<v Speaker 3>out there, I really hope that Microsoft is able to
<v Speaker 3>get this to work otherwise I will continue dreaming and
<v Speaker 3>thinking about Linux.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, and you know, an improved version of Windows that
<v Speaker 1>has this real gaming mode that is separate and has
<v Speaker 1>better performance. That would be really nice because it would
<v Speaker 1>make things a lot less of headache on a desktop
<v Speaker 1>where I'm probably gonna keep Windows for the most part,
<v Speaker 1>although I also.
<v Speaker 2>Keep sideye in Linux.
<v Speaker 1>All Right, we're not quite done with Xbox talk, but
<v Speaker 1>let's bring in the PlayStation as well. Both PlayStation six
<v Speaker 1>and Xbox Helix are apparently launching Holiday twenty twenty seven,
<v Speaker 1>according to at least one rumor. This is from Jonas
<v Speaker 1>Mackie at Game Reactor. It's starting to feel like we
<v Speaker 1>have a pretty good picture of Xbox Helix, what kind
<v Speaker 1>of console it is and what kind of performance we
<v Speaker 1>can expect. Development kits will start shipping out next year,
<v Speaker 1>which means game development isn't likely or is likely in
<v Speaker 1>full swing. But what about the PlayStation six. We've heard
<v Speaker 1>rumors about that too, but not nearly to the same
<v Speaker 1>extent as with Helix. There's no doubt that no doubt
<v Speaker 1>that it's on its way, though, Does this mean that
<v Speaker 1>Microsoft will get a big head start on Sony just
<v Speaker 1>like it did with the Xbox through sixty No, not,
<v Speaker 1>if we believe one of the Internet's most prominent hardware
<v Speaker 1>insiders we are talking about Kepler two, who writes on
<v Speaker 1>neogaff that Xbox and PS six are still on track
<v Speaker 1>for Holiday twenty twenty seven. He clarifies that the same
<v Speaker 1>applies to the rumored portable PlayStation device. Jan that's that's
<v Speaker 1>really soon. You know, twenty twenty six is already flying by.
<v Speaker 1>You know, we're well into March now, it's we're gonna
<v Speaker 1>be at the end of this year in no time.
<v Speaker 1>Does that mean we should be expecting kind of NonStop
<v Speaker 1>new hardware rumors if it's launching within the next nine
<v Speaker 1>to twenty four months or yeah, yeah, in that timeframe
<v Speaker 1>or eighteen to twenty four months or whatever it is. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>that's that seems pretty soon, especially for the PlayStation six.
<v Speaker 3>I'd like to pose a question to the audience here,
<v Speaker 3>grub is or have you folks at home that maybe
<v Speaker 3>only play games on modern consoles? So the PS five
<v Speaker 3>PS five proh the current Xbox, do you y'all think
<v Speaker 3>you have gotten like full use of it? Have you
<v Speaker 3>like use that thing and gotten the max experience and
<v Speaker 3>max enjoyment out of it. However, many years into this
<v Speaker 3>generation we are, and I think I'm seeing a lot
<v Speaker 3>of no's, some more spirited nose as well, so grub
<v Speaker 3>like I can't And for you and I and other
<v Speaker 3>people in games media, I think I feel the same
<v Speaker 3>where I still haven't got full use out of a
<v Speaker 3>PS five yet, I still haven't felt the need to
<v Speaker 3>even upgrade to a PS five Pro.
<v Speaker 2>Yep.
<v Speaker 1>Same, And it's like I am the sucker that is
<v Speaker 1>the person that they aim these things at, where it's like,
<v Speaker 1>let's get I'm excited to spend money early in the
<v Speaker 1>generation or on an upgraded PS five Pro, And the
<v Speaker 1>narrative that they've been able to weave around these devices
<v Speaker 1>or at least the PS five Pro and probably what
<v Speaker 1>will happen with the PS six is just not that compelling,
<v Speaker 1>especially at the price that we're talking about, and especially
<v Speaker 1>after You're right, I think it's a two step story
<v Speaker 1>of is that worth it? And do I feel like
<v Speaker 1>I got my money's worth out of the last thing?
<v Speaker 2>Yeah?
<v Speaker 1>And when both of those are iffy, it's going to
<v Speaker 1>be a tough hill to clue. And twenty twenty seven
<v Speaker 1>just feels like too soon to start like getting past
<v Speaker 1>that narrative again or lack thereof.
<v Speaker 2>You know, this is this is one rumor.
<v Speaker 1>I bet there was at least one time where these
<v Speaker 1>systems definitely both were aiming for.
<v Speaker 2>At some point, some point in twenty twenty seven.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, you know with ram prices, Now, that's got to
<v Speaker 1>be the straw that breaks the camel's back, because it's
<v Speaker 1>a straw that weighs seven million fucking pounds.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, greb. And also, like I I don't think PlayStation
<v Speaker 3>would lose out on much if Xbox, you know, hypothetically
<v Speaker 3>released their next generation console sooner than they were ready for.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, because if anything.
<v Speaker 3>I think that gives PlayStation more leeway to kind of
<v Speaker 3>handle the situation depending on how Xbox's new console would launch,
<v Speaker 3>right of, like, hey, maybe don't need that. We still
<v Speaker 3>got all this shit over here. You could still play
<v Speaker 3>Fortnite over here. That's fine, you know.
<v Speaker 1>And they're getting some of the machine learning improvements to
<v Speaker 1>visuals and stuff like that, Like you know, Xbox is
<v Speaker 1>promising better textures because they're going to be able to
<v Speaker 1>shrink the textures and use machine learning to improve those
<v Speaker 1>as well. A lot of that stuff is showing up
<v Speaker 1>in PS five PRO right now. So it's like they
<v Speaker 1>kind of are bolstered against a lot of the improvements
<v Speaker 1>that will be promised by next generation because the episser
<v Speaker 1>improvements are still yet to come to PS five Pro,
<v Speaker 1>and that should make an actual noticeable difference. You know,
<v Speaker 1>we're talking relatively here again, Is it enough of a
<v Speaker 1>difference to get you to spend the seven hundred and
<v Speaker 1>fifty dollars or whatever it is to upgrade from PS
<v Speaker 1>five I think most.
<v Speaker 2>People are probably still no.
<v Speaker 1>But like then you start comparing it to one thousand
<v Speaker 1>dollars new Xbox hardware that is also PC, and then
<v Speaker 1>it's like, Okay, the PS five pros looking pretty good
<v Speaker 1>for that, especially if I want more performance out of
<v Speaker 1>like a Grand Theft Auto six.
<v Speaker 3>The other aspect, Grub is that this has to come
<v Speaker 3>into play that they are concerned abouttential price, right, like.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, we were gonna be like top tier concern.
<v Speaker 3>Like if we're even looking at this year alone, and
<v Speaker 3>the concerns about everything happening now, God knows what's gonna
<v Speaker 3>happen in twenty twenty seven, especially when we get to
<v Speaker 3>the holiday season of twenty twenty seven. Like, there are
<v Speaker 3>people losing their minds about gas prices now, food prices.
<v Speaker 3>How are we even supposed to entertain the idea of
<v Speaker 3>any form of entertainment moving forward into next year.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I was I couldn't sleep last night.
<v Speaker 1>I was, you know, on West Coast Time, and it
<v Speaker 1>was I think I'm also coming down with something from GDC.
<v Speaker 1>I got a little bit of a cold and fighting off.
<v Speaker 1>I feel fine everybody, but just I'm fighting it off.
<v Speaker 1>And it was keep me awake, and it was definitely
<v Speaker 1>cost me to have like, oh weird little nightmares. But
<v Speaker 1>I was like part of it was like I started
<v Speaker 1>waking up and I was like, what was that nightmare?
<v Speaker 2>And it's like, oh no, I think I'm just remembering
<v Speaker 2>the news.
<v Speaker 1>I think I'm just remembering like like paying attention for
<v Speaker 1>a few minutes too long and realizing, oh, I live
<v Speaker 1>in Children of Men my literal nightmare.
<v Speaker 2>Look around. It's just like that.
<v Speaker 1>So yeah, it's it's bad out there if people are
<v Speaker 1>having to deal with that. As much as we value
<v Speaker 1>video games as escapism and we do like it's really
<v Speaker 1>nice to have Pacopia right now, it's it's very eerily
<v Speaker 1>similar in some ways to having animal crossing when the
<v Speaker 1>pandemic was happening, and in a lot of ways, like
<v Speaker 1>a lot more sad because it's like, God, the things
<v Speaker 1>that we have to ignore now are actually even worse.
<v Speaker 1>But it's like, if people are trying to just get
<v Speaker 1>by day to day and then you show up, we're like, hey,
<v Speaker 1>your escapism now is extremely more expensive than what you
<v Speaker 1>paid for last time, and last time, you don't feel
<v Speaker 1>like you've got a good deal. People are going to
<v Speaker 1>start feeling burned. They are going to look for alternatives.
<v Speaker 1>And I do think that's where you know, a Steam
<v Speaker 1>machine is going to look a lot less impressive visually,
<v Speaker 1>performance wise compared to these these bespoke consoles going forward,
<v Speaker 1>but it still might be this alternative of like get
<v Speaker 1>me out of these crazy you know, you know looney
<v Speaker 1>bins where I have to spend all this money on
<v Speaker 1>you know, eighty dollars games, ninety dollars games. What are
<v Speaker 1>these Steam sales are looking really impressive at the very least,
<v Speaker 1>people might just start looking for alternatives. So I think
<v Speaker 1>Sony even like even has to be pretty careful and
<v Speaker 1>obviously Microsoft has has to figure a lot out, and
<v Speaker 1>that's if they are launching in twenty twenty seven.
<v Speaker 2>Oh, that's going to.
<v Speaker 3>Be rough, right, It's going to be incredibly rough, grub
<v Speaker 3>And I think you like hit the nail on the
<v Speaker 3>head with Pacopeia, where this is not a great game
<v Speaker 3>that is like graphically impressive, right right. It leans on
<v Speaker 3>its style very heavily, and it's it's not pushing the
<v Speaker 3>boundaries of anything on the switch to really, but there's
<v Speaker 3>just enough charm and enough of a game there to
<v Speaker 3>keep you playing. And obviously you know the story from
<v Speaker 3>earlier today, selling two point two million units within the
<v Speaker 3>first four days, and that number is just going to
<v Speaker 3>keep climbing, Yeah, as the game starts picking up more
<v Speaker 3>and more esteam.
<v Speaker 2>So I.
<v Speaker 3>Just don't understand why PlayStation at Xbox don't see make
<v Speaker 3>good game game sal We're good YEP.
<v Speaker 1>One of the aspect of this we didn't talk about.
<v Speaker 1>We'll just do it briefly. This handheld also with launching
<v Speaker 1>twenty twenty seven, according to this rumor, and that's the
<v Speaker 1>PlayStation handheld. That is one of their ways that they
<v Speaker 1>can really shake things up and sort of approach a
<v Speaker 1>generation from a different way than they've done so before
<v Speaker 1>you know, they've been extremely consistent, put out a much
<v Speaker 1>more powerful PlayStation than last time, and the PlayStation three
<v Speaker 1>it was like weird with some very bespoke hardware. They
<v Speaker 1>learn their lesson from that, and since then it's like
<v Speaker 1>off the shelf stuff, work with partners that are very
<v Speaker 1>well known and deliver that, and it's like that has
<v Speaker 1>always worked for them, them sort of anticipating that that
<v Speaker 1>might not work as well for them, it's going to
<v Speaker 1>be difficult. They've never had to sort of try to
<v Speaker 1>pivot before. I think the handheld would give them a
<v Speaker 1>lot of opportunity to sort of say, we'll experiment on
<v Speaker 1>that side of things.
<v Speaker 2>And I bet there's people in.
<v Speaker 1>That audience, people who would pick up handholds that would
<v Speaker 1>be a lot more willing to say, Hey, what does
<v Speaker 1>a PlayStation on this device look look like? Because I know,
<v Speaker 1>if I really want the old experience, I'll just go
<v Speaker 1>get a real PlayStation that has a disk drive, maybe
<v Speaker 1>even still, which would be like I think a big
<v Speaker 1>win persony if they showed up with that still with
<v Speaker 1>the PS.
<v Speaker 3>Six, Yeah, the like part of it, Grub is like
<v Speaker 3>with this new generation of consoles also possibly looming over
<v Speaker 3>the horizon, I desperately wish that they just if I
<v Speaker 3>just want them to look cool, if anything, because like, yeah,
<v Speaker 3>I like the design of the PS four, slim, like
<v Speaker 3>the little baby one we eventually got, but in however
<v Speaker 3>many years removed. Now I think the PS five is
<v Speaker 3>so fucking ugly. The thirtieth anniversary edition of the PlayStation
<v Speaker 3>consoles that they launched like last year, two years ago,
<v Speaker 3>I think are absolutely gorgeous and improve the look of it.
<v Speaker 3>But the look of the PS five as a whole
<v Speaker 3>absolute garbo.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, and I'm definitely I like how ugly it is,
<v Speaker 1>but I think I still agree with you that. All right,
<v Speaker 1>let's go back to something traditional and Sony cool or
<v Speaker 1>nineties weird.
<v Speaker 2>That this is not nineties weird the PS five. It's
<v Speaker 2>excuse me, you.
<v Speaker 1>Know, like the liquid metal look of like some of
<v Speaker 1>the Sony MP three players or something like that.
<v Speaker 2>That stuff I would I would like to have back.
<v Speaker 1>I don't think they'll go that way, So give us
<v Speaker 1>the traditional Sony like, oh, that's just a sleek piece
<v Speaker 1>of kit. All right, Let's let's take that break. We
<v Speaker 1>got plenty more to talk about after these ad messages.
<v Speaker 1>If you want to skip out on these messages, you
<v Speaker 1>can do that. Go to giant bomb dot com slash

<v Speaker 1>free versions of all our shows, including this one, for
<v Speaker 1>both audio and video. In the meantime, we will be
<v Speaker 1>right back. It's Game Mess Mornings Jeff Grubb, jin Achoa
<v Speaker 1>back at it. Let's get into these headlines once. Another
<v Speaker 1>new PlayStation Jan, this one a Lego PlayStation, is reportedly
<v Speaker 1>apparently coming this year. This is from Chris Copindio at
<v Speaker 1>GameSpot who I trust. Lego enthusiasts can soon build and
<v Speaker 1>own the original PlayStation in brick form, according to a
<v Speaker 1>prolific leaker purporting that a Lego set based on Sony's
<v Speaker 1>first console is releasing at the end of twenty twenty six.
<v Speaker 1>An Instagram user with the name Lego Minecraft Goat, who
<v Speaker 1>has a history of leaking Lego sets, claimed in a
<v Speaker 1>post that a one eleven piece PlayStation set, including at
<v Speaker 1>least the controller and the console, will be out this
<v Speaker 1>December and cost one hundred and sixty dollars. I believe
<v Speaker 1>this because I want it to be true, Jan, because
<v Speaker 1>I'm a big fan of the look of that original PlayStation,
<v Speaker 1>especially these days, and you know these consoles have been
<v Speaker 1>pretty fun to build. I think that this would encourage
<v Speaker 1>more of these give us a dreamcast, right, keep doing
<v Speaker 1>this work with all of these companies, and I hope
<v Speaker 1>that sort of puts us on the path that to
<v Speaker 1>the point where we do get those What do you think.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, Grub, this is like the type of let's say,
<v Speaker 3>console preservation, historic preservation that I really enjoy. Like, I'm
<v Speaker 3>not the type. I'm not one of you Sikos yet
<v Speaker 3>who knows that wants to like go grab every old
<v Speaker 3>console just for the sake of having it.
<v Speaker 2>But if it's in lego form, though, Grub, that's cool.
<v Speaker 2>Though exactly it really is. It's cool. The game Boy
<v Speaker 2>is fantastic. Yeah, I hope they just keep doing this.
<v Speaker 1>I hope that Sony's like on board, let's just do
<v Speaker 1>all of our consoles, give us, give us the PSP.
<v Speaker 2>What the hell? You know?
<v Speaker 1>When they do this for Nintendo often there are things
<v Speaker 1>like for the Game Boy, the the images you can
<v Speaker 1>slide into the game Boy screen so it looks like
<v Speaker 1>you're playing Links Awakening or whatever. What could they do
<v Speaker 1>with the PlayStation to accomplish something like that. They probably
<v Speaker 1>wouldn't have the CRT like they did with the NES,
<v Speaker 1>they would probably make it something else, like something on
<v Speaker 1>the memory card.
<v Speaker 2>I don't know.
<v Speaker 3>I'm like looking at the game Boy set that I
<v Speaker 3>have now, and I think what would get me go
<v Speaker 3>and grub is just like a working door, like the
<v Speaker 3>disc door and like the buttons.
<v Speaker 1>You're right, yeah, oh yeah, Actually the pressing those buttons
<v Speaker 1>always felt good. If they could just sort of replicate
<v Speaker 1>that even a little bit, but especially the door openings,
<v Speaker 1>there's something there and then there can even like be
<v Speaker 1>something inside that would be cool.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, Like all those gone really good at like parts
<v Speaker 3>that can come on and off and that are designed
<v Speaker 3>to come on and off, and like I had a
<v Speaker 3>little bit of motion. It's not super complicated in the
<v Speaker 3>Game Boy one of course, but if this PlayStation one,
<v Speaker 3>and it's also supposed to cost like what grab one
<v Speaker 3>hundred and sixty dollars, Yeah, that's right, I would hope
<v Speaker 3>for something to spin.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, and you know at that price with this
<v Speaker 1>many pieces. They have done equivalently equivalently difficult things in
<v Speaker 1>their builds before, for like Nintendo devices.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, so it's like, yeah, I would kind of hope.
<v Speaker 1>So, like you know that CRT right, has like the
<v Speaker 1>spinning Mario scene for the NS kit, So yeah, I
<v Speaker 1>would expect something like that, and they're they're really good
<v Speaker 1>at that and that they know that's a gimmick that works.
<v Speaker 1>So yeah, I hope so as well either way PlayStation.
<v Speaker 2>This is very cool. I hope we get a lot
<v Speaker 2>more of it. Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>Silent Hill to Remake has surpassed five million players. This
<v Speaker 1>is from Ben Lyons at Game Reactor. Konami has revealed
<v Speaker 1>that Silent Hill to Remake, a project developed by Bluebird Team,
<v Speaker 1>has now hit a very impressive player milestone. Ever since
<v Speaker 1>it debuted in October twenty twenty four, of the game
<v Speaker 1>has managed to continue to entice players, so much so
<v Speaker 1>that now as many as five million players have been
<v Speaker 1>registered for the game.
<v Speaker 2>Not bad. I think that, you know, very very good,
<v Speaker 2>right this.
<v Speaker 1>I mean the Silent Hill series is ascending and that
<v Speaker 1>is that's best case.
<v Speaker 2>Scenario for Konami, right mm.
<v Speaker 3>Hmm, I think very very good for Konami. Good for
<v Speaker 3>Blueber as well, right yeah. Blueber kind of like turning
<v Speaker 3>the rep around and also Konami turning their reputation around,
<v Speaker 3>and like the metal gear collection definitely helped with that.
<v Speaker 3>But this especially I feel like is a good hopefully
<v Speaker 3>a good sign for things to come out of Konami.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, I mean yeah, at the very least you can
<v Speaker 1>tell tell the motivation is there from a lot of
<v Speaker 1>these companies that have been inspired by Capcom to like, hey,
<v Speaker 1>if we make good games. I mean you were saying it,
<v Speaker 1>make put out good game, you know you sort of
<v Speaker 1>you're gonna succeed, and I think, you know, especially like
<v Speaker 1>Monster Hunter Stories three, I will say, hey, Mike, look
<v Speaker 1>at these review scores.
<v Speaker 2>I'm glad he picked that up.
<v Speaker 1>Because it's like man eighty five on open credit for
<v Speaker 1>that game. Yeah, that's like, okay, things continue to improve,
<v Speaker 1>and it's like it was already in a space where
<v Speaker 1>like a Monster Hunter too, I think people are like, hey,
<v Speaker 1>this is really good and it averaged out and again
<v Speaker 1>it's it's just review scores, but it helps us kind
<v Speaker 1>of put these things in perspective. Averaged out to about
<v Speaker 1>an eighty one, it's like, hey, that's that's pretty good,
<v Speaker 1>well done. If you just keep doing that forever with
<v Speaker 1>these I bet it they're going to find their audience
<v Speaker 1>and like, no, if we keep making it better, more
<v Speaker 1>people will show, will show up and it's like, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I've seen more people excited about Monster Hunter Stories.
<v Speaker 2>Three.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, Konami's got to see that that has continued to
<v Speaker 1>work for Capcom. They know they have the historical vintage
<v Speaker 1>juice there as well.
<v Speaker 2>Vintage juice doesn't sound good.
<v Speaker 1>They can know they got that that old school juice
<v Speaker 1>there as well, that they can sort of play on
<v Speaker 1>and if as long as they keep putting out good games,
<v Speaker 1>they should be able to accomplish similar results I would expect.
<v Speaker 3>Yeah, and not everything is going to be a home
<v Speaker 3>run Grub and Silence. Yeah two is totally one of
<v Speaker 3>the more popular ones in the franchise. But I think
<v Speaker 3>this has restored enough interest in not only Silent Hill
<v Speaker 3>but Konami where people will be inclined to come back
<v Speaker 3>and maybe hopefully Konami can be can experiment a little
<v Speaker 3>bit more with their existing IP as well. We see
<v Speaker 3>that Monster Inner Stories. They've gotten to three titles at
<v Speaker 3>this point, grub right, despite me never checking out any
<v Speaker 3>of them, despite them being fairly reviewed, Well, there's an
<v Speaker 3>audience for them, so Grub I'm calling it here. Now,
<v Speaker 3>Konami just make a jerr PG. But in the Silent
<v Speaker 3>Hill universe.
<v Speaker 2>Oh yeah they could. Yes, that would work, and I
<v Speaker 2>think it would do very well.
<v Speaker 3>And it's just a party of mentally ill absentee fathers.
<v Speaker 2>Oh okay, all right, the most powerful party you can imagine.
<v Speaker 3>I would all of them in green jackets, untucked shirts,
<v Speaker 3>bootcut gens.
<v Speaker 2>Police have tuck. Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>Yes, you're describing something that would It's like it sounds
<v Speaker 1>like like a weird bizarro world of Final Fantasy fifteen.
<v Speaker 1>It's like just these dads on a road trip. All right,
<v Speaker 1>let's keep going here. Overwatch direct reveals his next game,
<v Speaker 1>and it looks like Red Dead Redemption two meets Russ.
<v Speaker 1>This is from Ethan Gotch at Kotaku. Jeff Kaplin has
<v Speaker 1>a new studio and a new game. It might not
<v Speaker 1>be what you expect from the Blizzard veteran who led
<v Speaker 1>design for years on World of Warcraft and directed Overwatch.
<v Speaker 1>It's called the Legend of California and it looks like
<v Speaker 1>Red Dead Redemption two if you turned it into a
<v Speaker 1>survival crafting sim. It's the debut GA game from Kaplan's
<v Speaker 1>new studio. Ken Sugiyama. You think that's good enough, Jan,
<v Speaker 1>I think that's probably good enough. Good dam my best
<v Speaker 1>there everybody, and it's being published by Dreamhaven, the company
<v Speaker 1>formed by ex Blizzard president Michael Moreheim.
<v Speaker 2>Revealed out of the Blue late yesterday.
<v Speaker 1>It's a multiplayer action survival FPS set on the island
<v Speaker 1>of California during the gold Rush era, according to a
<v Speaker 1>new Steam page listing, Okay, so I normally I typically
<v Speaker 1>don't include like new game announcements. Better at this point, Jan,
<v Speaker 1>It's like, yeah, games get announced all the time, but
<v Speaker 1>this is Jeff Kaplin, this is like a superstar developer,
<v Speaker 1>and Okay, but then it's a survival game, and those
<v Speaker 1>are you know, Diamond doesn't I don't think mean necessarily
<v Speaker 1>dismissing their popularity because those come out, they find huge audiences.
<v Speaker 1>It's just like if you know, if you're into them already.
<v Speaker 1>But again, Jeff Kaplan and I think he's going to
<v Speaker 1>be able to command some attention here. Do you think
<v Speaker 1>he'll be able to parlay that into success with this game?
<v Speaker 1>And will that success become from the traditional survival game
<v Speaker 1>or audience or the people who followed Jeff Kaplan's blog posts.
<v Speaker 3>I think it could be a little bit of both.
<v Speaker 3>Grub Right, like Jeff Kaplan definitely curries some favor, a
<v Speaker 3>lot of favor if we're being honest with audiences, and
<v Speaker 3>also a survival game. It is just one of those
<v Speaker 3>genres of grub that always has an audience despite there
<v Speaker 3>being a million of them out there. And I think
<v Speaker 3>something that I know on this website we've done a
<v Speaker 3>little bit of reevaluating Red Dead Redemption two. Still not
<v Speaker 3>for me, but I like Cowboys. This could be something
<v Speaker 3>that captures that audience. Because I also didn't realize, Greb,
<v Speaker 3>that there is a subset of gamers out there that,
<v Speaker 3>despite Red Dead Redemption two being I know there's an
<v Speaker 3>online mode, but despite being a single player game, is
<v Speaker 3>some people's forever.
<v Speaker 2>Game, right.
<v Speaker 1>I mean, you start putting mods on that thing, and
<v Speaker 1>it's a whole it becomes completely different very fast.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 3>So if they can capture some of the appeal and
<v Speaker 3>like the random things that can happen in Red Dead
<v Speaker 3>Redemption two, but also tie in a survival aspect, you're
<v Speaker 3>gonna get a lot of freaks out there.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>At the very least, it's like, Okay, you know, a rust,
<v Speaker 1>but set in this very different kind of like it's
<v Speaker 1>not that different from a RUST, but it's different from
<v Speaker 1>a lot of the other survival games. Yeah, and honestly
<v Speaker 1>sounds a lot like a rust you know, old school
<v Speaker 1>gold Rush California. But I still like that ideas, like
<v Speaker 1>it feels different spiritually from a lot of those games.
<v Speaker 1>I was wondering, like, what happened to Jeff Kaplan just
<v Speaker 1>the other day. It's like, you know, I don't remember
<v Speaker 1>him talking about a studio. A lot of these developers
<v Speaker 1>from that era of Blizzard did kind of spin out,
<v Speaker 1>and a lot of them we haven't heard from a
<v Speaker 1>lot of them, but a lot a lot of these
<v Speaker 1>studios did put out like those real time strategy games,
<v Speaker 1>and it doesn't feel like any of them sort of
<v Speaker 1>did what the expectation was, which is like, hey, once
<v Speaker 1>we make a real StarCraft successor, that audience will show up.
<v Speaker 2>And that didn't seem to be the case.
<v Speaker 1>Do you think at the very least, him trying something
<v Speaker 1>different here is probably maybe a better strategy than trying
<v Speaker 1>to mean he couldn't have made an Overwatch clone.
<v Speaker 2>Right, that would have been crazy.
<v Speaker 3>No, that would have been incredibly misguided. And I don't
<v Speaker 3>think Jeff Kaplan would have done that because nothing Obviously,
<v Speaker 3>you know, he still of course holds over Watch with
<v Speaker 3>high reverence in his own heart, so I appreciate this
<v Speaker 3>divert in the next game he wants to make. I
<v Speaker 3>also like whenever a popular director of a game, Greb
<v Speaker 3>will come back out of like pseudo retirement or not
<v Speaker 3>even full retirement and be like trying to flex everything,
<v Speaker 3>Like check this out. I got this idea. Sometimes it
<v Speaker 3>doesn't pan out well. Right in the case of the
<v Speaker 3>Legend of California, I hope it does.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, that's a hell of a name. What do you like?
<v Speaker 1>What landmarks do you want to see in this game
<v Speaker 1>so you know you're in California, jan.
<v Speaker 3>I want to see I want to see trains, Greb.
<v Speaker 3>I want to see a railroad.
<v Speaker 1>Okay, I want to see Jonathan Blow doing Taichi outside
<v Speaker 1>of GDC. That's that's what I want to see anything now,
<v Speaker 1>and now I know where I'm at. Valve claps back
<v Speaker 1>against New York Attorney General lawsuit in rare public response.
<v Speaker 1>This is from Alex Hopley at Game Reactor, in a
<v Speaker 1>case that's probably about five or even ten years too
<v Speaker 1>late to jump on the hatred people had for loot Box.
<v Speaker 1>Is the Attorney General of New York decided to bring
<v Speaker 1>a lawsuit to Steam platform owner Valve, citing its use
<v Speaker 1>of loop boxes in Counterstrike two, Team Fortress two and
<v Speaker 1>Dota two as unlawful and harmful to children. Last night,
<v Speaker 1>Valve issued a response. In somewhat of a rare occurrence,
<v Speaker 1>the Steam owner decided to create a public statement on the.
<v Speaker 2>Matter, posted via the Steam website.
<v Speaker 1>We rarely talk about litigation, but we felt we should
<v Speaker 1>explain the situation to you, Valve started to explain in
<v Speaker 1>its opening paragraph. We shared with the New York Attorney
<v Speaker 1>General that these types of boxes in our games are
<v Speaker 1>widely used, not just in video games, but in the
<v Speaker 1>tangible world as well, where generations have grown up opening
<v Speaker 1>baseball cards, baseball packs, and blind boxes and bags, and
<v Speaker 1>then trading and selling the items they receive on the
<v Speaker 1>physical side. Popular products used in this way include baseball cards, Pokemon,
<v Speaker 1>magic La Boo Boo. In the game Space, digital packs
<v Speaker 1>similar to our boxes date back to two thousand and
<v Speaker 1>four and are in widespread use. Players don't have to
<v Speaker 1>open mystery boxes to play Valve games. In fact, most
<v Speaker 1>of you don't open any boxes at all and just
<v Speaker 1>play the games because the items in the boxes are
<v Speaker 1>purely cosmetic. There is no disadvantage to put to a
<v Speaker 1>player not spending money. Valve goes on in this way
<v Speaker 1>for a little bit, But those are the big popular
<v Speaker 1>talking points that a company like them would would lay out,
<v Speaker 1>and Jen I generally agree for the most part. Where
<v Speaker 1>it's like, yeah, this is pretty similar to Pokemon cardbacks.
<v Speaker 1>Here's where it's like, I agree, but I don't care.
<v Speaker 1>I love the idea of a big company that makes
<v Speaker 1>a lot of money getting some scrutiny. Let's just take
<v Speaker 1>a look. You say it's like you say, it's like
<v Speaker 1>Pokemon cards. Just show us the math that we were
<v Speaker 1>sure that you've kept track of. Show us that it's
<v Speaker 1>just like Pokemon cards, and that you're not putting a
<v Speaker 1>little juice on top, and that you're not putting just
<v Speaker 1>a little bit of extra sugar where you kind of
<v Speaker 1>manipulate the algorithm in your favor, something that may be
<v Speaker 1>at the very least extremely difficult to do with physical cardbacks,
<v Speaker 1>or maybe even impossible.
<v Speaker 2>So just prove it.
<v Speaker 1>We're gonna have some we're gonna have some scrutiny. Come in,
<v Speaker 1>take a look, and you tell us what's really going on,
<v Speaker 1>and if it satisfies us. I bet this does go away,
<v Speaker 1>and if it doesn't, well let's talk about why not.
<v Speaker 2>Right, one hundred percent. Grub.
<v Speaker 3>Also, you know, I'm looking at all the different things
<v Speaker 3>that Valve listed out, Baseball cards, Pokemon cards, la boo boos,
<v Speaker 3>and as someone that has existed in the periphery of
<v Speaker 3>all of those things, those aren't good comparisons for me
<v Speaker 3>because like, as, yeah, that's how they are. That doesn't
<v Speaker 3>mean manipulate it good. How they are, It's been bad.
<v Speaker 3>And just because people will like rip open packs as
<v Speaker 3>a hobby doesn't mean it's a good hobby because it
<v Speaker 3>is still incredibly predatory to do like it. Near me,
<v Speaker 3>there was a stabbing over Pokemon cards, so that's not
<v Speaker 3>something that's not a fun comparison I want to have either.
<v Speaker 3>But I'm with you, Grub of like, okay, well, if
<v Speaker 3>you were pointing these fingers across everyone else, then just
<v Speaker 3>show me, show me the dirt then, Valve.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, I just want some friction out there, right.
<v Speaker 1>There was this idea of we should let grown adults
<v Speaker 1>who who have matured and can make their own decisions
<v Speaker 1>decide what they want to do with their money. If
<v Speaker 1>they want to gamble on sports. We should let them.
<v Speaker 1>And it's like, you know what, it's hard to argue against,
<v Speaker 1>you know, your body or choice. Like literally people would
<v Speaker 1>say that sort of thing. I'd say, Okay, well that's
<v Speaker 1>going a bit far, buddy, But I get what you're
<v Speaker 1>trying to get at. We shouldn't be going into people
<v Speaker 1>and like treating them like their nannies, okay, And then
<v Speaker 1>as soon as you give them an inch, they take
<v Speaker 1>forty fucking miles. And now the world's been controlled by
<v Speaker 1>gambling sites in one way or the other in every
<v Speaker 1>industry you can possibly imagined imagine, and it's it's obviously
<v Speaker 1>clearly like transparently awful like it is. It is a
<v Speaker 1>talk about machines to extract value out of people. That
<v Speaker 1>is the nuclear weapon designed to extract money out of people,
<v Speaker 1>and it does so in a way that is pernicious
<v Speaker 1>and obviously wrong, and something should be done about it.
<v Speaker 1>Because we took all the friction out of the way,
<v Speaker 1>we can't even like send regulators after them.
<v Speaker 2>And it's like, man, this should definitely be regulated.
<v Speaker 1>And if it's still like a corner of it's still
<v Speaker 1>made legal, and we just tax the hell out of it.
<v Speaker 1>Tax every bet, like that's the way they should do it,
<v Speaker 1>Like every bet you make should be taxed, and it's
<v Speaker 1>like just a little bit of money on top, and
<v Speaker 1>it's like, I bet that would discourage a lot of
<v Speaker 1>people over time and at the very least use that
<v Speaker 1>money to improve schools or whatever. But we don't have
<v Speaker 1>any of that regulation because we gave them an inch,
<v Speaker 1>and that gave them the biggest loophole they needed. And
<v Speaker 1>now they're on the other side and they control everything.
<v Speaker 2>So let's go.
<v Speaker 1>Ahead and keep where we can throw up barriers on
<v Speaker 1>anything that is even somewhat similar to this idea.
<v Speaker 2>Let's do it right, one hundred percent grub.
<v Speaker 3>I don't think there's anything wrong with companies being more transparent.
<v Speaker 3>If they're making such a big stink about even being
<v Speaker 3>looked at or scrutinized, then put your money where your
<v Speaker 3>mouth is and show us how much fucking money you
<v Speaker 3>are making from these show us from the people.
<v Speaker 1>You're not a publicly traded company, but you are still
<v Speaker 1>like you have to answer to the public when we
<v Speaker 1>ask you to just show us.
<v Speaker 2>Let's talk about it, and if you can satisfy.
<v Speaker 1>Us, I bet people will actually be satisfied because there's
<v Speaker 1>a lot of faith in Valve and people want to
<v Speaker 1>feel good about that company. And I think that company,
<v Speaker 1>for the most part, privately owned, wants to maintain that
<v Speaker 1>that it's important to them, Well, then earn it, and
<v Speaker 1>we're asking you to do that this way, and I
<v Speaker 1>think that's a completely fair and reasonable ask. All right,
<v Speaker 1>last story here, E Shop reveals Super meat Boy three
<v Speaker 1>D is coming to Nintendo switch To at the end
<v Speaker 1>of the month. The long awaited Super meat Boy three
<v Speaker 1>D was announced a few weeks back for the Nintendo
<v Speaker 1>switch To, and today the Nintendo e Shop page has
<v Speaker 1>gone live. The shop listing states that the game will
<v Speaker 1>arrive on Nintendo's latest system on the thirty first of
<v Speaker 1>March for twenty five dollars and will be roughly three
<v Speaker 1>point one gigabytes in size.
<v Speaker 2>Blah blah blah. It's yeah. People are like, I want
<v Speaker 2>to be excited about this, but that Met Boy Forever
<v Speaker 2>game was somewhat disappointing. I think that was the Auto
<v Speaker 2>Runner or something like that.
<v Speaker 1>It's like, yeah, okay, I hope that this is where
<v Speaker 1>the energies were going though, because I would love for
<v Speaker 1>meat Boy to be back, you know, Eugenics. I didn't
<v Speaker 1>love the esthetic, and this, of course is very similar.
<v Speaker 1>But I always did have a soft spot for meat
<v Speaker 1>Boys gameplay, and if you could translate that even a
<v Speaker 1>little bit to three D. I want to see what
<v Speaker 1>that game looks like and what it plays like. And
<v Speaker 1>it looks kind of promising, so cool to see it
<v Speaker 1>kind of came out of nowhere for me. Oh that's
<v Speaker 1>already coming out, and of course it's been for forever,
<v Speaker 1>but you know, I just wasn't thinking that it was
<v Speaker 1>around the corner, and here it is. Grub.
<v Speaker 3>What I will say, though, and I'm not going to
<v Speaker 3>reveal the people I've talked to, I will say, out
<v Speaker 3>of folks that have played several platformers coming out of
<v Speaker 3>GDC this week so far, Grub, it seems like the
<v Speaker 3>heat on the street may not be around Super meat
<v Speaker 3>Boy three D, but it's around Bubbzy Look.
<v Speaker 1>Look all right, Yeah, I think I think Bubbsy four
<v Speaker 1>D is going to be awesome, especially because that's that's
<v Speaker 1>for braz They just did It's Demon Tides.
<v Speaker 2>I think it's the new one. Yeah, that in that
<v Speaker 2>game is very good.
<v Speaker 1>I started playing it myself finally, and I did play
<v Speaker 1>a little bit of Bobsy four dy that demo that preview, Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>I was impressed. So let's see, at the very least,
<v Speaker 1>I'll have a new Bubbsy game. And everybody knows that's
<v Speaker 1>for me, the Bubbsy guy, Jeff Grub, everybody.
<v Speaker 2>To you, the loves guy.
<v Speaker 3>Speaking about Nintendo, I did check out a couple of
<v Speaker 3>games grub from GDC this week, specifically the one I
<v Speaker 3>do want to talk about real real quick, Mina the Hollower.
<v Speaker 2>Holy shit, really, oh man, that's so awesome, I hope.
<v Speaker 2>So you know a thing to consider.
<v Speaker 3>These are all very shorter demos because they have to
<v Speaker 3>turn through so many people in a very tight time window.
<v Speaker 3>But with the brief time I had with a Grub,
<v Speaker 3>Mina has got the juice. I dig it a bunch right.
<v Speaker 3>It really delivers on the promise of what if Legend
<v Speaker 3>of Zelda but cool mouse with quip and she can dig.
<v Speaker 1>Yep dig and kind of jump out of the ground
<v Speaker 1>and it all just felt so good when I played
<v Speaker 1>it forever ago. But it was one of those ones
<v Speaker 1>where it's like they're they're aiming at me, you know,
<v Speaker 1>links Awakening, This game looks a lot like that.
<v Speaker 2>That's one of my favorite games.
<v Speaker 1>I'm gonna it's gonna be hard for me to judge, Like,
<v Speaker 1>is this just getting me the nostalgia of the aesthetics
<v Speaker 1>and the really snappy gameplay. So Jan, you're going in
<v Speaker 1>there and enjoying it's like, Okay, there might be something
<v Speaker 1>more to it than just me liking this kind of stuff.
<v Speaker 3>And it feels like there's you know, there's a couple
<v Speaker 3>other miscllaneous, different little bits and bobs that will appeal
<v Speaker 3>to different sorts of play types as well. So, right,
<v Speaker 3>if it initially may not be for you, it does
<v Speaker 3>seem like there will be different things to pick up
<v Speaker 3>throughout the game to find too to how you want
<v Speaker 3>to play that style of game.
<v Speaker 1>All right, let's get over to the poll question, which
<v Speaker 1>I believe Mike did. Right, let me go ahead and
<v Speaker 1>open this over here.
<v Speaker 2>I will refresh.
<v Speaker 1>I was listening while I was doing some other stuff,
<v Speaker 1>and yeah, there we go. Have you bought a video
<v Speaker 1>game themed lego set?
<v Speaker 2>Yes? Or no? I'm gonna say that I have because I.
<v Speaker 1>Have, so did thirty four percent? Sixty six percent said
<v Speaker 1>no they haven't. One third of our audience showing up
<v Speaker 1>for those Jan that's that's quite a few people, right.
<v Speaker 2>I'm like, oh, if you get.
<v Speaker 1>One third of the kinds of people who listen to
<v Speaker 1>podcasts like this buying that thing, Yeah, that's that's quite
<v Speaker 1>a bit of money. Kind of makes sense why they
<v Speaker 1>keep why they keep returning to it. There's a likely
<v Speaker 1>very large overlap in the Vinn diagram of people who
<v Speaker 1>build Lego and people who would enjoy these old video
<v Speaker 1>game consoles.
<v Speaker 3>Right, one hundred percent. Also, I am curious if people,
<v Speaker 3>if they didn't buy the video game Lego sets, if anything,
<v Speaker 3>the other video game ip they they thought to vote
<v Speaker 3>yes and this, Like there was that Horizon kit, the
<v Speaker 3>Dikou tree from Legend of Zelda. A bunch of Lego
<v Speaker 3>freaks out there. I here's a thing, grub. I don't
<v Speaker 3>know what people's interest is in watching someone build Lego.
<v Speaker 3>I did it a couple times during the pandemic, but
<v Speaker 3>a lot of people were very into Abby and Jurff
<v Speaker 3>building a keyboard yesterday. So sometimes I wonder.
<v Speaker 2>To Jeff, are finally relenting and doing that stream with her? Yeah? Finally.
<v Speaker 3>But I'm curious if you know people out there are
<v Speaker 3>interested in watching like a Lego building stream here here
<v Speaker 3>on GB because it could be fun times. Also the
<v Speaker 3>unfortunate part gang everyone out there. If your significant other,
<v Speaker 3>your parents, your siblings, your friends, if they know that
<v Speaker 3>you're very into games, you're going to get these as
<v Speaker 3>Christmas gifts for the foreseeable future. This is just what
<v Speaker 3>they're going These are the targeted ads, y'all.
<v Speaker 2>Yep, and hey, they they're right, that's a that's a
<v Speaker 2>pretty good gift for anyone who's kind of in this space.
<v Speaker 1>You're probably gonna have a winner there, even among like
<v Speaker 1>the sixty six percent of we're like, no, I've never
<v Speaker 1>had that. If you get like one of the easier ones,
<v Speaker 1>get the game Boy, that's a fun afternoon right there.
<v Speaker 2>H gundam stream Yeah.
<v Speaker 1>I mean people do that and I'm into that every
<v Speaker 1>once in a while, even though I've never built gumpla.
<v Speaker 1>Is that what people say? Yeah, yeah, I've never done that.
<v Speaker 1>I would like to, but at the very least watching
<v Speaker 1>that is a lot of fun. Okay, let's see here
<v Speaker 1>we have a new poll question, which let's get to now,
<v Speaker 1>are you getting a switch to for Pacopia?
<v Speaker 2>Yes? No, I already had a switch to. Those are
<v Speaker 2>your options.
<v Speaker 1>We'll get the results of that tomorrow here on Games
<v Speaker 1>Mornings on Giant Bomb Speak at a Giant Bomb Jam.
<v Speaker 2>What's happening? I just got back. I don't know what
<v Speaker 2>you guys do it anymore.
<v Speaker 3>I've voice smailed dump truck popping off later today. A
<v Speaker 3>third episode of Marry Me Tomadacci going live later today tomorrow,
<v Speaker 3>another episode of Games More, we'll have upf I think
<v Speaker 3>we're still fine tuning the bells and whistles as to
<v Speaker 3>what to do tomorrow for that. But gang, we've had
<v Speaker 3>another hot week of content for y'all. But speaking about
<v Speaker 3>content grub, you know what else they can do is
<v Speaker 3>if you at home are interested in going to Packs
<v Speaker 3>East twenty twenty six, we will be there. We're gonna
<v Speaker 3>have three panels. Details are still a little bit up
<v Speaker 3>in the air. We're fine tuning and locking down the schedule,
<v Speaker 3>but you can expect at least three panels. Vinnie Caravella
<v Speaker 3>will be joining us for one of them. But if
<v Speaker 3>you still have not bought a Pax East pass and
<v Speaker 3>you are a Giant Bomb dot Com Slant Premium member,
<v Speaker 3>if you head to the Behind the Scenes channel, you'll
<v Speaker 3>get a discount code for fifteen percent off your ticket.
<v Speaker 3>You can also enter a raffle though grub for two
<v Speaker 3>free tickets two packs east.
<v Speaker 2>That's fantastic. I didn't know about all that. That's really cool.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah, everyone get on that please. Hey, and I
<v Speaker 1>saw some people say, hey, there's no Bomb twelve link updated.
<v Speaker 2>I'll do that right now. I'm looking at the new link.
<v Speaker 2>I'll put it up on.
<v Speaker 1>The site and I'll skeet about it so everyone can
<v Speaker 1>just get it there. We can get it updated because
<v Speaker 1>tomorrow we're gonna we're gonna have a new Bomb twelve,
<v Speaker 1>so we're gonna get some We're gonna need some new games,
<v Speaker 1>new answers.
<v Speaker 2>There that that'll be there to wrap up the end
<v Speaker 2>of the week.
<v Speaker 1>You know, my kids don't have school tomorrow, so it
<v Speaker 1>felt like Friday today, even though I haven't worked this
<v Speaker 1>week other than being at GDC non stop, like oh no, no,
<v Speaker 1>we have worked the tomorrow as well. But I'm excited
<v Speaker 1>because I'm looking forward to Tomodachi later today, looking forward
<v Speaker 1>to kind of wrapping up the week with some fun stuff.
<v Speaker 1>It's gonna be good, alright, jan anything else that we
<v Speaker 1>have to do, I think I just got to say
<v Speaker 1>thank you for hanging out with me and talking about
<v Speaker 1>video games.
<v Speaker 2>Man, I really appreciate it. It's the only way to start
<v Speaker 2>a Thursday.
<v Speaker 3>Greb.
<v Speaker 1>Thank you all for watching and listening. You are the
<v Speaker 1>best audience in gaming. Until next time, have a good one,
<v Speaker 1>take care of yourself and goodbye.
