[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome in the Servant Bolly featuring Nebraska assistant coach in recruiting coordinator Jalen Reyes. [SPEAKER_00]: Servant Bolly gives you a look behind the curtain of Nebraska volleyball and a coach's perspective on the world of college athletics. [SPEAKER_00]: Servant Bolly is sponsored by Bob Bolly Moll Nebraska. [SPEAKER_00]: Become a love volleyball Nebraska member for your chance to engage with love and its players now It's time for first serve on serve at Molly with your host Jayland Reyes [SPEAKER_01]: All right, welcome back in to tick week nights, Harrison Arons is still on the ones and Tuesdays is always come tick week nights. [SPEAKER_01]: You guys can join in a 402, 464, 565, we got Nebraska volleyball assistant coach. [SPEAKER_01]: Second show, I believe, yeah, you're in here. [SPEAKER_01]: So second show on 937, the ticket, Jalen Reyes, joining me as always, like I said, the sort of him and techs line is open. [SPEAKER_01]: If you guys want to chime in, we'll definitely talk some volleyball as they maintain their undefeated record. [SPEAKER_01]: They got a big game coming up here shortly. [SPEAKER_01]: We'll get to all that, but before we do so, Jalen, how's it going on on Tuesday night? [SPEAKER_04]: Great, thanks for having me. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely, it's always pleasure bringing in studio and it's it's cool what DP's doing with Tuesdays in particular because we get our guy Peter Cole about he's late shift to nine he's coming in I believe 10 it to 11 Wow, but we'll still get to hear from him, but yeah Tuesdays are kind of turning into a nice little [SPEAKER_01]: tunnel vision into what the Nebraska program looks like we didn't have rich in here today, but we also got some wrestling going on as well. [SPEAKER_01]: And they had there's just a lot of excitement. [SPEAKER_01]: volleyball is undefeated wrestling. [SPEAKER_01]: They got second place last year soccer. [SPEAKER_01]: I know they had a lot of draws, but they were just fighting through it right now. [SPEAKER_01]: And then of course tennis last year, Peter Colebell has some big successes there. [SPEAKER_01]: Do you guys kind of feel like the ship's rising with all sports? [SPEAKER_01]: Like, I know volleyball's kind of just spend this constant. [SPEAKER_01]: But can you feel the other programs kind of elevate the entire athletic? [SPEAKER_04]: For sure. [SPEAKER_04]: I think I think it starts with leadership. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think Troy Ganon is like an unbelievable athletic director and, you know, it kind of bleeds down into dressing at admin. [SPEAKER_04]: But no, I definitely feel, you know, it's just we're all, you know, it's, [SPEAKER_04]: We're all trying to chase each other to degree, but at the same time, it's all we're all so supportive. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I mean, I'll go in just because our proximity to basketball and we use their wait room sometimes. [SPEAKER_04]: I go in there and, you know, Amy and Fred are always like, [SPEAKER_04]: You know, big one this week Penn State, you know, they're just like, you know, it's, it's a really awesome environment to be in, you know, and there's some coaches were a little closer to than others wanted just be purely because of proximity, of course, but, you know, it's like coach manning I always run into Amy Williams Fred Hoyberg, you know, bunch of the football coaches, especially when we go over to training table. [SPEAKER_04]: No, but it's it's a really awesome time. [SPEAKER_04]: I always say it's always it's every day's a great day to be a Husker, but right now it's a really, really exciting time just because of the success of a lot of the false sports so far and you know, hopefully the winter sports and the spring sports can take it forward from there. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's absolutely true and it's one of my favorite things is you'll hear when I talk to student athletes a lot is them crossing over at the training table the time and you see it with Matt rule you see it with Fred or your bird. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, no, we'll see it with us. [SPEAKER_01]: We've got to tell you. [SPEAKER_01]: I'm sure as well some more, but it's great when you see other coaches, you know, and real players as well. [SPEAKER_01]: It's a great Sam way bird. [SPEAKER_01]: They're showing up to other games, you know, like I can turn on volleyball and you'll be Matt rule and he's there and then he'll go on the presser and talk about volleyball's big win and [SPEAKER_01]: how his daughters got them scheduled to go to four more games, you know, in the upcoming weeks. [SPEAKER_01]: So when you kind of get that, it feels like a lot of the coaches kind of get the whole Nebraska community thing, which is just phenomenal. [SPEAKER_01]: And I do think it's just kind of rising all tied to your, but we'll dive in the volleyball a little bit undefeated so far, 12 in 0 after going through a really tough non-con schedule to get to Big Ten play. [SPEAKER_01]: They take care of Michigan opening up then Maryland [SPEAKER_04]: big away game October third Penn State what is the road like when you do travel to Penn State it's you know flying in a happy valley it's it's such a it's such a cool place to be if I'm being honest I I love the college towns and obviously state colleges probably at top five ten college town you know in terms of just that place you when you're there you're it's about Penn State athletics and Penn State University you know so [SPEAKER_04]: Every time we go there, every time we play on them, it feels like we're going five no matter what. [SPEAKER_04]: It's epic. [SPEAKER_04]: People are talking about the match for weeks and months and even years sometimes. [SPEAKER_04]: There's always a few plays or that stick out on people's memories, whether we win or we lose. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, and I think it's two programs that really respect each other based on, you know, the respect built by, you know, the two former head coaches of both programs, John Cook and Coach Rose at Penn State. [SPEAKER_04]: But every time we go there, it's awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, usually they do their version of the White Out. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm not really sure, a schedule, but it will be a sellout or it will be packed. [SPEAKER_04]: Usually they have the, there's student section. [SPEAKER_04]: They have the men's volleyball team sitting in front row, making sure they, their presence is felt if you know what I'm saying. [SPEAKER_04]: They always have a pretty funny student section. [SPEAKER_04]: There's always somebody with this like white board. [SPEAKER_03]: Really? [SPEAKER_04]: And they write like, [SPEAKER_04]: Honestly, the funniest things on it like I'll sit there and crack up during the game because it's like you know, though it's it's just it's a corn joke or it's you know, they're playing hangman and it's like Dissing us and they leave a couple letters and then, but I always find myself even as a coach may be doing a timeout or as the girls are going back on the court like checking out what's on the whiteboard if I'm being honest, but it's such a it's it's an environment that [SPEAKER_04]: Um, you know, equals to other sports is like college environment, you know, and it's this this older gym that has a ton of history. [SPEAKER_04]: It has their banners from their wrestling program, which is obviously a top probably the best wrestling program in the country to [SPEAKER_04]: Right now, right now, right now, right now, right now, right now, you know, but it's it's such a there's just so much history and at Recall and the community comes out and you know it's and I think honestly also the volleyball usually if I'm a fan if I was a fan going to all these games, but she's since I've been involved with Nebraska volleyball, it's like every time you go to Nebraska. [SPEAKER_04]: Penn State match, you get your money's worth. [SPEAKER_04]: So hopefully, we have another epic shot on Fox, which is gonna be another big deal just because, again, we're trying to get onto those major networks as volleyball programs. [SPEAKER_04]: And, but every time Nebraska Penn State gets involved in volleyball, it moves the needle. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: It's usually, it's usually a match where you're looking at all the volleyball games throughout the country at the beginning of the season. [SPEAKER_04]: When you see Nebraska Penn State playing each other, you circle about one for sure within your first couple of circles. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, it's like a BAM of Georgia. [SPEAKER_01]: BAM of Georgia, man, I think it's Ohio State Michigan. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's that level of volleyball game for for our sport. [SPEAKER_04]: It's a Duke Carolina men's basketball game. [SPEAKER_04]: It's it's two programs that want to achieve the same thing. [SPEAKER_04]: Now that obviously, you know, historically haven't been in the same conference now or in the same conference. [SPEAKER_04]: And some years we get to only play them once last year. [SPEAKER_04]: We got to play them twice obviously once in the final four. [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, that's the other thing, right? [SPEAKER_04]: We could end up playing on a couple, you know, we're gonna for sure play them two times. [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe hopefully we get to play them down the road in the tournament in December. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: I like that. [SPEAKER_01]: It's good to compare it in North Carolina Duke. [SPEAKER_01]: Because I mean, really, when you look at those two programs, then only succeed within their own conferences, within their own, you know, national play, but they just push the sport to a whole another level. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's where Penn State, I'm always rooting to beat those guys. [SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to like. [SPEAKER_01]: not like that because what they've done for the sport. [SPEAKER_01]: I love that Nebraska on the back, but Penn State's been a huge part of what volleyball has become as well in it. [SPEAKER_01]: It's the it's their program elevating at such a rate, you know, pretty parallel to Nebraska at times. [SPEAKER_01]: That's allowed these because I mean, if Nebraska's just blowing everybody out through zero, it's not that entertaining. [SPEAKER_04]: I think it's definitely a measuring stick game for us, you know, [SPEAKER_04]: We kind of end up being the measuring stick game for a lot of programs, you know, and there's a few programs that we, when we get together with them, we, you know, we kind of expect an epic match up in Penn State, definitely one of them and going back years, you know, it's it's volleyball for those that don't know, used to be dominated by the West Coast team, you had Hawaii at Long Beach State, USC, UCLA, Stanford and don't give it wrong, those teams are so really good, but there was the time. [SPEAKER_04]: Especially, you know, in the 70s and 80s, there was two random volleyball programs that ended up being really good, especially when, you know, most of the best players were out on the West Coast, but it was Penn State and Nebraska, you know, so, I don't know, being a part of the program obviously not that long, but, you know, the last seven or eight years now, I like to think both of these programs had a hand in bringing volleyball to the Midwest and toward the East Coast and to the South and to Texas. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, and obviously the University of Texas ended up becoming a, you know, a juggernaut too. [SPEAKER_04]: So, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: I think they're, they're, I think you hit it on the head, you know, of course, we're competitive. [SPEAKER_04]: Of course, we both are seeking literally the same two things, the Big Ten and the National Championship. [SPEAKER_04]: But I think also the one thing that our program and I, you know, if I, I can't speak for their staff of their program, I would like to think has this responsibility to is to keep growing the game and pushing the sport of volleyball and, you know, hopefully Friday night is another classic that helps do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: And I do want to, you know, I'm almost positive that's the way Penn State feels. [SPEAKER_01]: I think after the volleyball day in Nebraska, I want to say the Penn State coach even put out a nice little piece saying about how great that was for the sport of volleyball. [SPEAKER_01]: So should be a good one to check out. [SPEAKER_01]: I know you mentioned some teams that they're always kind of circle on you. [SPEAKER_01]: One that's not doing it just for the ranking, Creighton. [SPEAKER_01]: Close one this year. [SPEAKER_01]: What's it like when you're playing those in-state matches against Creighton, who's getting better and better of feels like every year? [SPEAKER_04]: They're, I mean, it's just another game that I swear you can just book that we're going to play five sets, you know, um, uh, the crating match is such a cool match, uh, because we talk about how like important volleyball is in the state of Nebraska. [SPEAKER_01]: And this was like the sea. [SPEAKER_01]: Hi, right. [SPEAKER_04]: This is actually how this year sold out. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, it seems like the number keeps getting bigger and bigger. [SPEAKER_04]: It broke the gosh, there's so many of these attendance records, which is awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: But it broke the the regular season indoor because obviously we the volleyball Dana Brasca, we have the total whatever you want to call it, but indoor. [SPEAKER_04]: regular season attendance record we took back from the Wisconsin Florida game a few years ago at CHI. [SPEAKER_04]: They basically just packed in a bunch of extra seats. [SPEAKER_04]: They had there was actually a roll of chairs a bunch of our parents actually sat literally right behind our bench which was which is a little interesting if I'm being I didn't realize they did that. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they were just getting extra seats in there which was cool and and and Kudos to Crayton, but [SPEAKER_04]: That game is such a cool thing because of the fact of, you know, we talk about all the time how important the sport of volleyball here is in Nebraska when you go to that game, especially when it's an Omaha. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, you see, you know, you see like the pillars of the sport, you see like a lot of the great high school coaches in the stands. [SPEAKER_04]: You see a lot of the girls that can, you know, I see a lot of really good high school players, whether we're recruiting them or not, in the stands. [SPEAKER_04]: You see a lot of the alums from both schools that are at that game, you know, obviously both admins are there because it's a huge, it's a big, it's a big thing for both athletic departments and [SPEAKER_04]: You just see how much, you know, I see club coaches, I see club directors, I see, you know, we have people from LOVV volleyball and the PVF there, you know, people from the supernovas, it's such a cool like celebration of volleyball in the state of Nebraska and it's, you know, it's, you know, it's just another, it's like a, it's a thing that, you know, the fact that it goes back and forth, you know, next year it'll be in Lincoln and the year after I'm assuming we'll be back in CHI, it's, [SPEAKER_04]: It's one of those things where, you know, it's such a privilege and an honor to be a part of. [SPEAKER_04]: And then the fact that I 100% agree with you, they're, I mean, ever since I've been at Nebraska, they've been really good. [SPEAKER_01]: I want to first got here. [SPEAKER_01]: I didn't really know. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_01]: And then I almost said, and I feel like they are just in a ranking way more. [SPEAKER_04]: They definitely gotten better since I first got here. [SPEAKER_04]: But when I first got here, we went, we were actually my first time playing Nebraska. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, at Nebraska, Coach Williams [SPEAKER_04]: We actually played up in Omaha and we actually lost the first two sets. [SPEAKER_04]: We're down O2, we were lucky enough to come back and win against a really good creatinine team. [SPEAKER_04]: And that was like the first time I was like, wow, you know, this team is really good. [SPEAKER_04]: And each year it's like they got better, they're getting better players. [SPEAKER_04]: And you know, you look at the last couple of years, they've been able to grab some [SPEAKER_04]: You know, we're at really good schools that could have gone to other really good schools, but they chose create, which hence they're a really good program, you know, and, you know, coach booth is obviously a legend and I know Brian's going to keep, you know, keep growing in and taking it to newer heights, but it's such an awesome thing for us to have this awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: you know, in state, you know, North Carolina Duke right and Louisville, Kentucky and a bunch of sports including volleyball, you know, it's Bill again, Iowa, I was saying we need them, you know, we need them to be great and it's awesome for the state for it to be great and it just brings more attention to the sport of volleyball and I think also that match, I think inspires. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, a bunch of young girls around the state to, hey, I want to play volleyball because, you know, whether I'm a, whether I'm a fan of the red team or the blue team, I want to be a part of that match one day when I grow up. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's just another way, you know, we can help grow the game and inspire you, you know, the youth here in Nebraska, but it's such an honor to be a part of and it's honestly such a fun match to coach in every single year. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's always fun to watch again. [SPEAKER_01]: Obviously, sold out, didn't realize about even extra chairs to CHI to get that thing rolling. [SPEAKER_01]: But, you know, until the other point of it, I'm sure the recruiting grounds have gotten richer over time as well. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, the Midwest has just become the spot where I think it's always have great athletes, but you start to see how big volleyball is into your point, some of these girls, you know, you watch by Waldae and Nebraska. [SPEAKER_01]: You watch them sell out CHI, even we had a PBA. [SPEAKER_01]: I really like that at PBA, the Bob's great, but I mean, it's cool when you can see it like, man, you give these guys a pinnacle bank arena, and I love my Husker basketball, but you know, I don't outside of Purdue, it's hard to think of that place rocking, like it was when volleyball was in there, and you get all this excitement around it, and it feels like the recruits are just getting better around the state as well. [SPEAKER_01]: When you were, as you mentioned before, when the West Coast was kind of dominating, [SPEAKER_01]: And then you see Nebraska Penn State two schools in the Midwest. [SPEAKER_01]: They'd always kind of know that there was a plethora of talent and desire for volleyball or was a little bit of surprise when you start planting roots here and really started to see it. [SPEAKER_04]: I think by the time I started coaching, you know Nebraska has been great since. [SPEAKER_04]: the nineties, you know, but you just look around, um, you know, when I was in college, I, you know, or even before I was in college when I was playing club, I would do, um, you know, you'd have, for boys volleyball, you'd have this USA program where we'd all go to Colorado Springs of Florida or San Diego. [SPEAKER_04]: And we'd have, I don't know, the top 40 boys around the country. [SPEAKER_04]: But in men's volleyball, it's very West Coast dominated Hawaii, Northern California, Arizona. [SPEAKER_04]: You have Chicago, Wisconsin, a couple of kids from the East Coast, like upstate New York. [SPEAKER_04]: You have a bunch of that DC Virginia Beach in Florida. [SPEAKER_03]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: So we'd go there, right? [SPEAKER_04]: And they'd have a girls group there. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's like crazy to see like the girls. [SPEAKER_04]: They're from all over, you know? [SPEAKER_04]: It's, you know, you got girls from North Carolina. [SPEAKER_04]: You got girls from Chicago. [SPEAKER_04]: You got girls from Texas. [SPEAKER_04]: You got girls from Oklahoma. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, some of my best buddies that I've met when we were 15, 16, they were from all over the place. [SPEAKER_04]: So that was when I first realized like, wow, the women's volleyball game, it's all over. [SPEAKER_04]: Now it's like, exponentially grown in the last 15 to 20 years, but yeah, I think once I got here, you just start to realize like, [SPEAKER_04]: how many and how good, how many good athletes they have here. [SPEAKER_04]: But I think the other thing and I think the other big importance of the creating Nebraska match is it gives, I think it's a really good visual for a lot of the high school and club coaches here, right? [SPEAKER_04]: They go to this game and they see all these local kids playing in this game and then they, you know, go back to their teams and they learn some stuff. [SPEAKER_04]: A lot of them come through our practices. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, we try to, hey, if we can make the coaches better, they will make the players better. [SPEAKER_04]: And that's just going to be a win-win for everybody, whether it's us creating UNO, you know, UNK, Wayne State, there's a lot of volleyball talent in the Midwest, and especially in this area. [SPEAKER_04]: So, yeah, I had some sort of idea, but obviously now you really see it, and it's definitely grown since, you know, when I was 15 years old. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and you mentioned before, obviously love volleyball being a place in thing right now. [SPEAKER_01]: And then you have the pvf and those guys obviously combined together or excuse me, they don't combine together. [SPEAKER_01]: League one volleyball. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it's what it was right and league one and pro volleyball combined together. [SPEAKER_01]: Love volleyball. [SPEAKER_01]: It's separate ends the really doing their own thing. [SPEAKER_01]: And I think they were smart to do so realize the value kind of was in their own borders here as those guys are continuing to build it up. [SPEAKER_01]: But it's just a really cool spot to be, you know, I think for a lot of women. [SPEAKER_01]: What was the pro thing to do? [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to live that athlete life, it was kind of Olympics. [SPEAKER_01]: If you want to be a gymnast, the Olympics, if you want to do volleyball, which was kind of the popular sport compared to football in the fall for a lot of women, there still wasn't a real thing after college, unless you can make that Olympic right. [SPEAKER_04]: Or you'd have to go over season play. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, like you'd have to go to Europe or South America Puerto Rico or Asia to play. [SPEAKER_04]: But, [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: I guess going back to tying this into like the Creighton Nebraska game and volleyball here in Nebraska. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we have technically as of right now, we have because that AU sports is playing their proceeds and they just, they're kicking, I think they actually start playing this weekend up in Omaha. [SPEAKER_03]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: We technically have three, the three pro leagues. [SPEAKER_04]: Ovaliball, AU Sports, LOVB and the PVF with the supernovas, they're all here in the state of Nebraska for a little bit. [SPEAKER_04]: AU Sports will be here. [SPEAKER_04]: I believe they're here for like three-ish weeks and they're going up to another volleyball capital. [SPEAKER_04]: They're going up to Madison. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: This is the, for those that don't know, this is the, this is the, this is the, [SPEAKER_04]: league where they have a certain amount of players and they just basically they they draft teams each week and they just shuffle and whoever is the leader of points, there's four leaders, they draft the teams. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's kind of it's kind of cool how they do it and they base it off the points and I know [SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes bonuses and how much they get paid is based off of like points they score or they have a formula and I don't know it off the top of my head, but that's going on an Omaha for the next three three to four weeks and obviously this spring will have the supernobas and LLVB Omaha here. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's just, you know, it's, we're the only state that has two of the, you know, we're one of the two cities that have two of the pro franchises and then the other league decides that we're going to play half their season in Omaha. [SPEAKER_04]: So for me, like, what is that say about where volleyball stands here in Nebraska? [SPEAKER_04]: I just think for a small state, [SPEAKER_04]: there's a lot of people that care about volleyball and the cool thing is is other people from all over the place, whether you were ownership in PDF, you were us, you know, you were investor in the lovely and or if you're with AU sports, they understand that, hey, Nebraska. [SPEAKER_04]: puts volleyball first and hence why they keep choosing to bring teams here and leagues here, literally. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's a, it's a really exciting time and it's, I think hopefully it just makes, you know, all the volleyball programs in the state better and hopefully it makes, you know, high school and club volleyball even better here in the state in Nebraska. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, and it's a, you know, to wrap it up before we go to break here. [SPEAKER_01]: It's great that the TV deals are finally coming through too. [SPEAKER_01]: And that's, that's always a huge part. [SPEAKER_01]: Me and D people kind of joke about it. [SPEAKER_01]: Like sometimes the way they drag their feet on this stuff. [SPEAKER_01]: When you just got to look at the numbers like you put on through your point Fox Nebraska Penn State. [SPEAKER_01]: The numbers always say, hey, you know, even if we're not talking about just Nebraska, there are a lot of people outside in Nebraska are watching it, and us in the TV deals, you know, the Fox are pockets to get lined up. [SPEAKER_01]: These are working out really well for us. [SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's a win-win. [SPEAKER_01]: I think they're finally discovering. [SPEAKER_01]: In volleyball, but just women's sports as a whole as well. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was two years ago with Don Staley, South Carolina, wasn't Iowa, came a member who they had in the championship game, but that beat out the men. [SPEAKER_04]: It was LSU, right? [SPEAKER_01]: I think you're right. [SPEAKER_01]: I think it was LSU. [SPEAKER_01]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: And that final four versus Don Staley. [SPEAKER_01]: And that beat the men's view or shit. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: Like, which is crazy. [SPEAKER_01]: You know, I think you go back 10 years ago. [SPEAKER_01]: You might tell some people that like, oh, the men's is always going to beat out the woman. [SPEAKER_00]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: And then don't it was Don Staley versus Kim Molky. [SPEAKER_01]: Right. [SPEAKER_01]: And that just kind of like I think. [SPEAKER_01]: helped all through the mind a little bit of these major TV deals and now you're seeing them with volleyball as well. [SPEAKER_01]: It's like you can only get so many great ratings before you realize we just need to put this on more because the people are paying attention right watching right. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's a for us we feel that, you know, we get asked to do events like the AVCA thing, there's going to be some events coming up here in the future and sometimes I think Husker vans are wondering why do [SPEAKER_04]: Jalen, why do you guys play like on Wednesdays and then like Sunday afternoons, you know, why don't you guys have the traditional Friday Saturday on schedule and as much as we would really enjoy that [SPEAKER_04]: We're playing on Wednesdays because of TV, and we're playing on Sunday afternoons or in the Big Tenses, and because it's in this window of one on Sunday, you stay away from college with all. [SPEAKER_04]: Obviously you have the NFL, which is King. [SPEAKER_04]: But if you play in this one o'clock central, two o'clock central window, you're kind of in between the football windows. [SPEAKER_04]: So hopefully, we can get a lot of people tuning into that. [SPEAKER_04]: So the big push, [SPEAKER_04]: is just, can we get, obviously, people in the seats, but can we just keep pushing to where major networks keep putting volleyball on that? [SPEAKER_04]: That's the, [SPEAKER_04]: Um, that's the goal, you know, and that's, that's where the biggest, that's how you were going to really grow the sport, right? [SPEAKER_04]: You just get it physically, get it into more people's households and people are watching it and it's making it on to radio shows and people are talking about it. [SPEAKER_04]: That's, that's really, really how, in my opinion, how it's going to grow is is, you know, can it just, you know, can we show up on ESPN or can we show up on ABC, can we show up on Fox? [SPEAKER_04]: You know, can we show up on CBS? [SPEAKER_04]: Like that's where I hope and where, you know, I've even I as an assistant feel the responsibility to, you know, we need to make sure, hey, obviously, we want to win on Friday. [SPEAKER_04]: I think if you ask the Penn State staff, they want to win on Friday. [SPEAKER_04]: But there's a little bit of [SPEAKER_04]: I hope it's an awesome match for television. [SPEAKER_04]: I hope Foxes, you know, corporates are, man, this volleyball thing is awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: And the ratings say it and it's entertaining and it's, there's a lot of awesome personalities, whether it's the coaches or the players in the match and the environment at Recall was awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: We need to put more of this stuff on television and [SPEAKER_04]: You know, for the most part, I can't even tell, but we've had so many, you know, national broadcast matches already, and it seems like each year we have more and more and I don't it's on I can only speak for us, but just looking around I feel like other teams are starting to get on it more as well, and that's that's really where the growth I think comes and hopefully that. [SPEAKER_04]: you know, parlaze into, hey, other schools athletic departments deciding, well, we need to step up because Nebraska, Penn State, Texas, SMU, Stanford, they're on these major networks, we do, you know, put some finances into our volleyball program. [SPEAKER_04]: We need to put resources. [SPEAKER_04]: We need to put facilities into our volleyball program to, hey, because we want to try to catch those guys as well, because they see the needle moving that way and they want to get out in front of it. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that's one thing Nebraska's done. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, [SPEAKER_04]: years before now, but I hope it's coming to fruition and in the day. [SPEAKER_04]: We don't rise if everybody else doesn't rise as well. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, like you said about Penn State, you know, us being the same conference now. [SPEAKER_04]: It's, you know, even though it may be easier if we weren't in the same conference, it makes it better. [SPEAKER_04]: It makes the sport better. [SPEAKER_04]: And, you know, we feel a responsibility that Nebraska will help do that. [SPEAKER_01]: Absolutely. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, in the optimistic view, I certainly say the steps towards, you know, getting almost national programming we see it here. [SPEAKER_01]: And I do think every year, because turning into a little bit like the Lakers, like you just get a look at the volleyball schedule, and it's like, [SPEAKER_01]: who's on the national schedule in Nebraska. [SPEAKER_01]: And it's like blakers, but to your point, those other games, if you're probably in the lakers, the risers you're both to because you've got a lot of more eyes on you. [SPEAKER_01]: So it's phenomenal thing. [SPEAKER_01]: We'll keep talking some volleyball here. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't go anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: Serve in volleyball with the Nebraska volleyball assistant coach, Jalen Reyes. [SPEAKER_01]: Think DP might be joining us as well. [SPEAKER_01]: So don't go anywhere right here. [SPEAKER_01]: 93 seven to ticket. [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome into Sirman Molly with your host, Nebraska assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, Jalen Reyes. [SPEAKER_01]: Alright, we'll come back in, serve in Bali, Jalen Raeas, hair strands of the ones and twos, we got D.P. [SPEAKER_01]: Joining us to my left and of course, the head coach in studios. [SPEAKER_01]: Well, you guys can still join in, World 2, 4, 6, 4, 5, 6, 8, 5, started him in tech slime, Facebook, YouTube, X, Aloe, Channel, 9, 6, 1. [SPEAKER_01]: Man, you're going to have Danny calling us. [SPEAKER_02]: You just caught him in a head coach. [SPEAKER_02]: We go called us, just to get the cause, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Definitely, just to get the cause, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Definitely, just to get the cause, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're going to have a problem. [SPEAKER_02]: Danny, you're just screeching down O Street. [SPEAKER_01]: to be fair. [SPEAKER_01]: I think that's the first time I've done that. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, so apologies. [SPEAKER_01]: I think he must be a killer. [SPEAKER_02]: Man, I don't want to, I don't want to get in trouble on week two. [SPEAKER_03]: Like, yeah, that would not be ideal. [SPEAKER_03]: Big day in Friday, don't need a, don't need a boss academy. [SPEAKER_02]: Don't need that coming up. [SPEAKER_02]: Look out about, hey, Harrison gave him a promotion. [SPEAKER_02]: That's all right. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, first opportunity to say thank you. [SPEAKER_02]: for doing this. [SPEAKER_02]: And I know that the listeners love you. [SPEAKER_02]: Even from D.C. [SPEAKER_02]: I tell you funny story. [SPEAKER_02]: So you'll get, I'm in D.C. [SPEAKER_02]: for the week, I'm handling business. [SPEAKER_02]: I have friends who are coaches around. [SPEAKER_02]: They asked me to come check out these these young ladies and I can't give their names, but I can give you the school. [SPEAKER_02]: So you have some idea. [SPEAKER_02]: Some of the top five real players of the country sitting in Washington DC in Northern Virginia, and one of them Just wearing a Husker T-shirt Husker volleyball T-shirt. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll let you do the math, but she Was in consideration for the Gatorade player the year, okay? [SPEAKER_02]: I know who that is. [SPEAKER_03]: Oh, I know who are talking about you. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, and two of her teammates [SPEAKER_02]: uh... were just literally uh... in just in the conversation they were asking about uh... Nebraska and how cool jail of race is that i thought i was free i couldn't wait to get i was got literally gonna film it and sent it to you but i was like now he's got he's got he's got a big ball game tonight and he don't need to be here about this stuff but uh... the fact that you just reach dc which to me like it was it made my heart warm uh... to have them talking about you that way brother that you guys are doing the thing [SPEAKER_04]: I'm a first. [SPEAKER_04]: I want to say thank you for having me. [SPEAKER_04]: This is this is awesome. [SPEAKER_04]: I've never been in this space before and it's been really fun just chatting it up and I look forward to it, but yeah, no, it's it's a [SPEAKER_04]: Nebraska volleyball. [SPEAKER_04]: I think I get to I get to meet a lot of kids when I do like USA volleyball stuff too, you know, like the club Metro out in DC they do a great job out there and a bunch of Virginia juniors is a great job out there and give those guys a shout out because they're great people out there and I think of last year we had the the pleasure of you know securing part of the big 10 championship last year playing Maryland in the DC are we got to play in the is it the expedited expedited. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, we played not in them and next year we play. [SPEAKER_02]: Right. [SPEAKER_04]: in prime time and that thing is one, that thing is a beast. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes, sir. [SPEAKER_04]: But it was, I mean, the DC people were there, they love their volleyball there. [SPEAKER_04]: And I, you know, cool thing about this job too is you get to go to some really cool places. [SPEAKER_04]: Like we're about to go to a couple cool places this weekend. [SPEAKER_04]: But every time we're in DC, man, it's, it's a, it's a time out there. [SPEAKER_04]: You know, I've done, I've lucky you guys did some recruitment out there recently and got, I, [SPEAKER_04]: go to a bunch of the private schools out there up in that Virginia area. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a lot of it. [SPEAKER_02]: Georgetown Day, Georgetown visitation, Georgetown Prep, St. [SPEAKER_02]: John. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep. [SPEAKER_02]: Flint Hill is one hill, so our buddy Barry Thompson. [SPEAKER_02]: OK. [SPEAKER_02]: Coach, the one who's on air here, coach at Flint Hill. [SPEAKER_05]: OK. [SPEAKER_02]: Like he literally just left there like a year ago. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: His son won three state titles there. [SPEAKER_02]: He knows all the people there, all the coaches there. [SPEAKER_02]: They whispered you, let him know, let him know. [SPEAKER_02]: We can help him. [SPEAKER_02]: Let him know. [SPEAKER_02]: He just needs to make call. [SPEAKER_03]: Love you. [SPEAKER_04]: Appreciate all the help we can get. [SPEAKER_04]: But no, and there's some. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, I think obviously for like every sport, especially I know more familiar with like the football side of things and the men's basketball side of things up in the D&B, but there's a lot of volleyball talent and talent and there's just so many unbelievable athletes of a net neck of the woods. [SPEAKER_02]: I didn't know that it had the legs that it did. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, I knew that volleyball was big, but. [SPEAKER_02]: when they come approach you and tell you hey man come see us like come see us and you go to the gym and then you see the young ladies and then you see the fan support which again I'm from there so I can tell you that it's grown leaps and bounds since I stop coaching there. [SPEAKER_02]: and then the development. [SPEAKER_02]: It is the thing you and I have talked about that it's a lot of the daughters of former athletes who's recognized the last name. [SPEAKER_02]: Yep, you just went through, like one of those ones was one of those ones. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Dad was an informian BA guy, and he said the thing. [SPEAKER_02]: And then the other thing that becomes interesting is I have to watch myself because I get excited about talking about and then here they come with, you know, a daughter cheer. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm like, wow, this is the business that you're in now, but them being able to watch you as you talk about them being able to watch you on Fox on ABC has really changed for sure. [SPEAKER_02]: On the perception and to the exposure to find out what this thing is and yeah, you've got to be proud of this act because Nebraska is the pioneer in this thing and they are the North Star, no matter, [SPEAKER_02]: matter who the reigning defending national champion is. [SPEAKER_02]: If you talk women's volleyball in this country, Nebraska comes up first. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I mean, it's, uh, it's an honor, it's a privilege. [SPEAKER_04]: It's a responsibility that we have to just make it better than what we found it. [SPEAKER_04]: And, uh, I think one thing for sure when it comes to the TV ratings are, are we getting on those like big time networks? [SPEAKER_04]: And are we getting on them during those like prime time hours? [SPEAKER_04]: And I get it. [SPEAKER_04]: We're never going [SPEAKER_04]: Um, you know, Kirk Kerb Street and Chris Fowler's game on Sunday night, I'm an on Saturday night on ABC, but can we start creeping into those TV times whenever they're available and I think networks are starting to see like there's some there's some, uh, there's definitely some, you know, traction when it comes to this volleyball thing. [SPEAKER_04]: So hopefully we keep it going. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think you've shown that that's what it is because this Friday on national television in the matchup of all matchups and quite frankly, I could look at Harrison, we're usually pretty on top of it. [SPEAKER_02]: I can't tell you what the Friday night college football game is. [SPEAKER_02]: I can't tell you that you're going to go hand-to-head with, yeah, you're the game. [SPEAKER_04]: No, so I always, and you guys, you know, there's Fox, there's a game, there's always a game Friday [SPEAKER_02]: It's it's on Fox sports one. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, so we were on the you're on the big bird. [SPEAKER_04]: That's why I was going to ask because I was going to ask if we're I thought they were I thought we were going to either be before the football game on Fox are after so I'm like, okay, maybe we're on Fox. [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe they're televising, uh, you know, [SPEAKER_04]: I saw Indiana plays Oregon in football, but then I realized like, no, that's on CBS on Saturday. [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe Washington plays, you know, I'm just thinking like, maybe okay, they'll get us in the East Coast time, but then they'll put a big 10 game on, they'll do Washington. [SPEAKER_04]: What's I didn't know I didn't realize we were on the big I knew we were on the big dogs But I didn't realize we kind of were in front of the or replacing a big dog. [SPEAKER_02]: You're gonna be in the corners of the country like if everybody gets on the blanket You guys are in the corners in the main room in the kitchen in the right living room We're gonna be up in every sports bar up in this you know Friday night on a Friday night in America [SPEAKER_02]: It is about Nebraska volleyball and Penn State volleyball, and I think it's fantastic. [SPEAKER_02]: One that it's it's earned. [SPEAKER_02]: I got that part like it's not given this is earned right this is that the early season metrics and then the tracking for it and then a perfect build up and it doesn't matter who else is playing. [SPEAKER_02]: You have star get star power you have the great story and then so my there's a dear friend about she's a volleyball coach in Utah okay and she's just like. [SPEAKER_02]: Does it, you will appreciate me asking this question the way she asks you? [SPEAKER_02]: Does it bother dating that Jalen is on TV more than she is? [SPEAKER_02]: The camera follows Jalen. [SPEAKER_02]: It's, they could literally just have a Jalen cam. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, just... Oh, not be ideal for me, but yeah, I was it. [SPEAKER_04]: I probably would also say though if I wasn't, if I, third, like, if I was not Jalen, I'd be like, there's times where I watch myself on video as we're watching maybe video and I go, [SPEAKER_04]: the hell am I doing. [SPEAKER_02]: You're wearing them, all right? [SPEAKER_04]: Not in the moment, but there's a little I'm like, oh my gosh, you're losing your mind here, bro. [SPEAKER_04]: What did I really do like the full Tiger Woods. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, no, it's so good. [SPEAKER_02]: Literally, I think that in our Texas rule validate this, that if they do, if they do a Jalen Ray his fist pump camp, count. [SPEAKER_02]: You know how to do with strike out, I just have like a meme of Jalen and his fist pump. [SPEAKER_02]: It just posts. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's like a bedding line like a under over. [SPEAKER_04]: Hey, they play this game. [SPEAKER_04]: The chances of this match is going four sets, which sets the under over at this. [SPEAKER_02]: Harrison, what do you think? [SPEAKER_02]: Let's see, let's assume. [SPEAKER_02]: So you're soon three sets can't assume five. [SPEAKER_02]: So how many fist pumps? [SPEAKER_02]: How many full Jalen Ray's fist pumps do you think [SPEAKER_01]: Too many to make it a drinking game, I'm gonna go, well hopefully, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I told you what more you actually want to do obviously, you want to over. [SPEAKER_04]: The great team that Penn State is there, they're going to probably try to make sure they're not too much fist bumping that jail and need to think that jailing can do, but [SPEAKER_04]: But no, I mean, dance to your question. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't really know. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, Danny tells me she wants me up. [SPEAKER_04]: They're coaching block and defense. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's part of it is just I stand or the camera. [SPEAKER_04]: It is even during the match and I always kind of joke to. [SPEAKER_04]: I think Danny would prefer me out there. [SPEAKER_04]: like yelling and screaming versus sitting next to her yelling and screaming probably tries to watch the game a little more in peace than I do. [SPEAKER_04]: So I think we got a good thing going here throughout the first 12 games, but I'll I'll you know what I'll actually go back and ask, but I think she's totally fine with it. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we need to figure that out. [SPEAKER_02]: All right, here's a goodest and great. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, they're great. [SPEAKER_01]: Don't go anywhere. [SPEAKER_01]: One more segment, serve in Bali with assistant coach, the basketball team all day long. [SPEAKER_00]: Welcome to the Serbian Bot lane with your host, Nebraska assistant coach in recruiting coordinator, Jason and Reyes. [SPEAKER_01]: Welcome back in final segment, Servant Folly, Nebraska volleyball assistant coach, Jalen Reyes and studio. [SPEAKER_01]: We got DP as well and only a few minutes left to go here, DP anything on top of your mind here. [SPEAKER_02]: I need to know. [SPEAKER_02]: I need to know. [SPEAKER_02]: So after they be Penn State Friday and then before they beat Rutgers on Saturday, [SPEAKER_02]: Or is that something that's something no Saturday Friday Saturday this Friday Saturday the bad talk to over that Will you find time to watch the Husker football team beats party? [SPEAKER_02]: Is that is that close to close when the clock? [SPEAKER_04]: No, I think I [SPEAKER_04]: One coach cook always had the Husker game on. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, we're on a bus. [SPEAKER_04]: So he's like, if someone has a phone, if me, one of the boys have their phones on with with the game on, he just, he's like, you know, he kind of asked to, hey, come up here, you know, sit by him on the bus. [SPEAKER_04]: And then it just kind of turns into like, he takes your phone and he takes you out of the seat. [SPEAKER_04]: So we got some point where we would just give him the flag. [SPEAKER_04]: We would just, we are tech guy. [SPEAKER_04]: He would have it dialed in on his laptop. [SPEAKER_04]: You know what I'm saying? [SPEAKER_02]: You should be a team table. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: We got to go here. [SPEAKER_04]: So Danny definitely got that, kept that role. [SPEAKER_04]: And obviously Danny's married to Lane Kelly, former football player here in Nebraska. [SPEAKER_04]: So we had no girls, you know, we have girls that are dating guys on the football team. [SPEAKER_04]: We have girls that are [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if you guys noticed, but man, if you're dealing with Iowa, he's starting quarterback for the football team. [SPEAKER_04]: So I got to make sure I got to make sure I got to make sure, make sure to, you know, all the polyboys on a team or you know, making sure they're dialing this up in. [SPEAKER_04]: So no, it's it for sure. [SPEAKER_04]: We'll have, I'm not sure exactly what the schedule looks like on Saturday, but I know it's going to be around the football team. [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm excited to see. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm excited to see the response that we're going to see from those guys about you know obviously I know maybe got pushed around a little bit up on up on trenches during that Michigan game and obviously a very talented Michigan team. [SPEAKER_04]: It's not like we got pushed around by nobody's here. [SPEAKER_04]: There's going to be I would assume there's going to be a few of those guys that are playing on some days, but [SPEAKER_04]: I'm excited to see the response that the staff and the boys come out with unsattered. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm really fired up because I feel like, you know, the day two, it's kind of a good team is, you don't let the lost beat you twice. [SPEAKER_04]: So I want to see the response from the staff and from players. [SPEAKER_02]: It's awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: Harrison and I were having the conversation last night about rankings. [SPEAKER_02]: And I always, I just made a point that I would imagine that as a coach, [SPEAKER_02]: There's no undefeated coach who feels like a team with one loss is better than theirs. [SPEAKER_02]: You've had a better season. [SPEAKER_02]: You've had the desire result undefeated should matter. [SPEAKER_02]: And then you can pile up the losses and talk about it. [SPEAKER_02]: Also, ask the question. [SPEAKER_02]: What is the equal? [SPEAKER_02]: You talked about Michigan pushing around the basketball. [SPEAKER_02]: What's the equal in volleyball? [SPEAKER_02]: Is that blocking at the net? [SPEAKER_02]: Is that, hitting efficiency? [SPEAKER_02]: What's the, what's the, what's the bullying aspect of the ball? [SPEAKER_04]: That's a really awesome question, D.P. [SPEAKER_04]: I think the first thing is just like the, can you defensively at the net? [SPEAKER_04]: Can you start to take away and make the attacker uncomfortable? [SPEAKER_04]: What I mean by that is, even as great as some attackers are, there's going to be some great attackers at the net, starting with a Harper Murray, a Caroline Jarrow vicious for Penn State, a Kennedy Martin who's leading the country and points, it seems like the team that can, even though they're great attackers, they tend to, everyone likes to hit the ball where they want to hit the ball. [SPEAKER_04]: The teams that can take that away and make the other person do something else and start to make them inefficient in that way, I think is one way. [SPEAKER_04]: The other thing too, is can you affect the other team's set or I would equivalent that to can you affect the other teams quarterback right with pass rush with schemes right you do that in volleyball with serving can you one move the set around the net most set or just want to hang out at the net stand there get the ball set the ball where they want Can you make them start running around the court, okay, can you and then obviously as a blocking team can you make sure hey this person likes to hit the ball to point a [SPEAKER_04]: They're not scoring hitting the ball to point A. I'm going to make them go BCD, okay? [SPEAKER_04]: And then I would say the other thing in volleyball too is just serving and passing. [SPEAKER_04]: So can you serve the ball? [SPEAKER_04]: Can you influence the game by the power of your serve? [SPEAKER_04]: And then can you receive the other team's serve? [SPEAKER_04]: Keep your set or on the net? [SPEAKER_04]: So I would say it's definitely that where can you make the other team hit the ball where they don't want it necessarily feel as comfortable hitting it, and then can you serve and pass better than the other teams. [SPEAKER_04]: Those are probably the two things you'd probably look for if you're looking for a hey where we were dominated. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we're not we're not going to we're it's bully ball tonight and I think it's one of those things where it's like can we affect the offense by serving them off the net and then can we. [SPEAKER_04]: Hey, these attackers are awesome, but there's a couple of shots that they feel really comfortable with. [SPEAKER_04]: Can we try to take those away and they're going to try to do the same thing to us on Friday? [SPEAKER_02]: I, again, thank you for for for educating for entertaining, but I'm thanking you advance as my grandma would say, praising advance, congratulations on being Penn State and Rutgers this weekend. [SPEAKER_03]: I really hope you're a right DP. [SPEAKER_03]: Thanks for having me as always and
