It was just a gold medal performance all around yesterday, and it was at this time twenty four hours ago. Canada and the United States second period tight at one point one. And if you look at the totality of this, if you were actually judging this like it was figure skating, then you would go, oh, Canada, they won. But we don't judge it that way. We judge it with the bottom line of goals, and you might say, wait a minute, what's happening in overtime? It was three on three. They do that during the regular season in the NHL because they don't they're playing so many minutes, so many games, and once you get to overtime, it's basically their version of a three on three shootout? And now do I like it? In the Olympics? I did not this. This is for the gold medal. This isn't hey, you got another game tomorrow night in Toronto and then you know one in New York. This is the Olympic gold medal. But the United States and Canada both had three men on the ice against one another, and the United States ended up winning. Of course, here's John Cooper, the Canadian head coach. Here comes the question first, well, how did.

Speaker 6: Overtime you take four players off the ice. Now hockey's not high anymore. There's a reason overtime and shootouts are in play. It's all TV driven and you know, to end games, so there's not you know, a long time. There's a reason it's not the Stanley Cup finals or playoffs because you know it gets ended in five. But it's still skill players out there making skill plays. And the US team has some skill players and you know, as de we and they they made one more play than we did in overtime.

Speaker 1: So that's the head coach for Canada, John Cooper. Look, he can be right but also be critiqued in this situation because they had plenty of chances to win. That were they the better team? Yeah, they probably were the better team, but and maybe they performed better. But the United States performed better when they needed to, and that was at the very end all it takes. When you get to that point, anything can happen, and a lot of times it can be something fluky and it didn't feel like anything was really starting to metastasize there for the United States. On that play, you're going okay, okay, oh, and then it's over, and you know, you start to think back nineteen eighty when you know the United States beat the Soviet Union. That wasn't for the gold and it doesn't seem like it was forty six years ago, by the way, nineteen eighty. But those are a bunch of guys who weren't playing in the NHL. I mean, that was their moment. Some guys played in the NHL, but these were college kids going against professionals. You know, it's different now, these are professionals against professionals. So does it have the same feel. No, but it still feels pretty good when you're watching and how that played out. And then Jack hughes Eah with teeth missing and a flag around his neck and a gold medal as well, when he talked about scoring the winner, this was.

Speaker 1: It was. You couldn't script it. In fact, if you tried to script it, somebody would say, all right, let's ease off. The guy loses his teeth. Okay, all right, you know, because he did, you know, nearly cost him his team with a bad penalty there in the third period. But that photo, and that photo is going to live on for the rest of our lives where you just see him smiling with his teeth cracked, and just you know it, it meant something. Well, this is this is pride. Now you can talk about the Stanley Cup. And Fritzy even said, hey, what would be more important winning the Stanley Cup or the gold medal? And I think it's an interesting question. I'm I'm you know, it might be one of those where you don't want to say it publicly. Hey, that Stanley Cup might be more important than winning a gold medal, because that's a team and a city as opposed to a country, but you know that might depend on what team, what city, what country we're talking about.

Speaker 8: Yeah, uh, I know in soccer, there's nothing more important than the World Cup. That is the pinnacle, that is like the end. I don't know if the Olympics. You know, the soccer is also in the Olympics. So it's not exactly the same, like an apple's to apples comparison World Cup to an Olympic medal, but there is something about playing for your country that's that's obviously a.

Yeah, and you saw that, you know, just the pride that they had and you know, Jack Hughes saying it over and over proud to be an American, did acknowledge the Canadian team. Canadian team had a lot of talent, they really did. But you know, you're just kind of hoping that the United States stays close and then they get the first goal and you go, okay, that sent a message and really quickly, and then Canada comes back and then it was going to come down to is somebody going to get a fluke goal or maybe a fluke safe because Connor was unbelievable. Like there's moments where you go how did that happen? How did he make that save? And this is where they talk about a goalie standing on his head. You know, for mikeel ERUZIONI, you needed Jim Craig as your goaltender and Jack Hughes needed hell about to get into overtime for him to have that, because those are really the biggest plays I won't have a save on. You know, there's like three of them. I mean, Canada had five on three for a while and didn't do anything, and you could see they had more talent out there. But you get to that point where all of a sudden you start to tense up, you miss shots that you would normally make. And and you know this, I remember when the United States beat the Soviet Union and there were some hockey purists that said, hey, if they played ten times, Soviets are winning the next nine. But they don't play ten times. That's the point, you know, of all of the great upsets. You know, if Villanova plays Georgetown again in basketball, or NC State against Houston, but they don't. They played once and that's all you needed to And the women's hockey team USA, now they were favored against Canada, and that turned out to be a lot better game than I thought it was going to be. But it was a fun weekend. It was fun to be able to watch it, and it was early morning. And this is what the Olympics does. The Olympics will bring in the casual fan or the non fan, and now you're watching moments like this. It's the one thing that all these sports try to chase, like, how do you get this? It's scarce and the Olympics still is able to deliver that. And you saw that yesterday on display Seaton Poll. Question for the first hour, the program is going to be what.

Jeremy Ronick was crying around the Stanley Cup because and he said to me when we were doing our broadcast, I'll never I'll never know that feeling. And it made him cry. But came in and it was like a slumber party for the back room, guys, Todd, you stayed at a hotel nearby?

Speaker 1: NBA back from the All Star break, the new All Star game format seemed to be a hit. I mean, the final game wasn't very good, but the other one's leading up to it. I thought it was fun. You know, there was a little bit of competition, seemed to matter a little bit more. And I thought it was interesting that Anthony Edwards said, once I saw Victor when Ben Yama playing hard, then I think we decided to play hard. It's like everybody was trying to figure out, are you really going to play that hard? Are we just gonna go out there and kind of have some fun and play like Luca and Joker do, or are we gonna really care? And then you saw that they really cared. Yes, Marvin.

Speaker 9: I was nervous because Anthony Edwards had his earrings in his ear before the game started, and I was like, he's not going to play hard. And once Wimby started blocking, everybody shot Okay, wait, I don't want to be embarrassed, like those guys don't want to be embarrassed, and so they came to play.

Speaker 1: Yeah. I liked it the slam dunk contest. I see better slam better dunks if I go to a playground or a pickup game. It's I think we've exhausted the slam dunk contest. But it was good. That was on at five o'clock local time. Get it out of the way. But there's just nothing there. You're trying to And then you have Mac McClung who is putting out videos to say, if I was in the slam Dunk contest, here are the dunks, and he would have dominated again and won the Slam Dunk Contest. And then if you don't know the players, like that's that's a big problem too. I don't know who these guys are, and I follow the NBA and you're like, okay, all right, well maybe this is a coming out party, and then I realized, no, not a coming out party. It's basically four guys. Somebody's got to do this, go make a dunk. But they're going to trot it out again until they find some kind of incentive to get great players or known players to come out there. It's going to be what it is. And that's basically fill in time.

Well, the ratings were so low that if you got an audience, you were probably going to be at least fifty percent more than what we've seen before, but it's progress. We had a conversation about it. We suggested this. The commissioner eventually put this in play, and maybe maybe you build on something like this.

Speaker 9: Yes, Marvin All Star Saturday Night, you have to finish the night with the three point shoes. You do you cannot start. They started it. That's the first event I know. It was a three point shoot out. And look the slam down contest. They got rid of it in the nineties because it was so bad. I don't know if you need to get rid of it, but just have it on first, especially if there's no stars.

Speaker 1: I would have every basketball be the red, white and blue basketball because I love watching the rotation, because that's a great teaching tool, is using you know, the different colored basketballs there. Now, I know you have the money ball at the very end, so maybe you have something that's a little more specialized. But if you're learning to shoot, or you're teaching somebody how to shoot, get a ball that's multi colored because then you can see the rotation. And if you saw the rotation of these players, they's just some poetry to that. And you know, esthetically it looks great because you're shooting from distance and you're shooting the lights out. But I would love to have that red, white and blue basketball. Speaking of which, I've been watching the ABA documentary. If you get a chance, and you know, I go back. I think I saw nineteen seventy five the Kentucky Colonels play the Spirits of Saint Louis with Marvin Barnes and they played in Cincinnati. And this is when artists Gilmore and Dan Issel were on the same team with Kentucky Colonels and Spirits of Saint Louis. Uh Fly Williams, Marvin Barnes and uh, you just go back and you're you're looking at a lot of these players and Rick Berry, he was in the NBA, goes to the A B A, Spencer Haywood, Connie Hawkins, uh, Doctor J. And you know a lot of these players left their best stuff in the A B A. I certainly think Doctor J did, even though he would have been a Hall of Famer on his NBA career. But Rick Barry was unbelievable. Yeah, I just ask him. He'll tell you. But you're watching and you're going, wow, I remember that player. I remember that time and the A B A. If you look at what the NBA was, it was boring, it was stale. And the A B A had the basketball and the three point shot, and it was run and gun. It was up and down. You had personalities there. Meanwhile, the NBA was the NBA was kind of like the Big Ten in the nineteen seventies. It was three yards in a clouded dust. It's like, that's the way we do it. Meanwhile, the ABA is just having fun and you know they got what they wanted that they got, you know, teams absorbed into the NBA. This is what the USFL was trying to do, get maybe three or four teams absorbed into the NFL. But ABA documentary, I would recommend it if you're a big basketball fan or the history of basketball. There's a lot of great and the fact that and I did not know this, the ABA had a chance to sign leu Al sindor Kareem Well one million dollar check that George Miken, George Miken Hall of Famer, he was the commissioner. All he had to do because Kareem said, I'm going to take the best offer. One offer from the NBA won from the ABA. And Kareem wanted to play in New York. He was going to play for the Nets. He didn't want to play in Milwaukee or Phoenix. And they they of course were involved in the coin flip. If they hand him the million dollars, it changes the NBA. The history of the NBA has changed, and the ABA because Kareem was that important and all George Miken had to do and then I think they fired him after that. It's like you had one thing to do, and I think George Miken later was like he wasn't worth it or tried to low ball Kareem, and Kareem was like, I'm going to go where the coin toss, you know, takes me. And Milwaukee won the coin toss with Phoenix I had. I was not aware of that story, but they showed the check for a million dollars and then all of a sudden, it's it's like he's in Milwaukee, he wins the championship, he wants to go to Los Angeles. It changes the NBA. Wow, by the way, pat Riley getting a statue in Los Angeles. Lakers going to give him a statue. I look forward to seeing what that's going to look like with the suit, the tie, the hair slicked back.

I remember when Terry Francona he wore just a poleover when he was with the Red Sox and then he got yelled at because they said, you don't even have your uniform underneath your poleover, which was true. He didn't, and then they made sure that he had, you know, his uniform on all right. I also saw this victor hauled Thorp. He won Denmark's first Winter Olympics medal since nineteen ninety eight. It's just the second medal that Denmark has ever won at the Winter Olympics. How is it possible a Scandinavian country has two medals in its history. Meanwhile, you got some of these dudes that are you know, biathlon, that win like six gold medals. What's going on? Come on, Denmark, you're better than that. Soft They won an individual a silver and men's speed skating, and then nineteen ninety eight they won a bronze medal in women's curling. And another all time great point guard who also lacks an NBA ring on his resume, John Stockton. And there's been some debating since CP three's retirement who had a better career. To me, it's definitely Chris Paul. I mean, plus, John Stockton had the luxury of playing his whole career with Carmela alone. But I've seen the mascots on the trampolines flipping over and dunking, and I've seen Red Panda on her unicycle. Maybe degree of difficulty. Maybe there's some kind of flames that are going around.
