<v Speaker 1>Right, So welcome back. We are in the midst of
<v Speaker 1>something that I would like to call the James Cameron
<v Speaker 1>shows us how to do a sequel series. We have
<v Speaker 1>just finished up with Alien and Aliens and we are
<v Speaker 1>just beginning Terminator and Terminator Too, where James Cameron comes
<v Speaker 1>out for the second swing and knocks it out of
<v Speaker 1>the park.
<v Speaker 2>I'm so excited to talk about this movie now.
<v Speaker 1>Before the movies, yeah, before we got into this series,
<v Speaker 1>we had our nineteen eighty four series where we covered
<v Speaker 1>a whole lot. We had albums, we had movies, we
<v Speaker 1>had all kinds of stuff. But today we're going back
<v Speaker 1>to nineteen eighty four.
<v Speaker 2>That's right. If you haven't been catching up on current
<v Speaker 2>events PLL. We did Born in the USA versus Sports Yep.
<v Speaker 2>We did Ghostbusters versus Gremlins. We did Footloose Versus Purple Rain, Yes,
<v Speaker 2>movie and soundtrack. Yes, we spent eight weeks in nineteen
<v Speaker 2>eighty four. It was great, and now we get a
<v Speaker 2>chance to revisit it today.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah. So imagine that summer, right, all of those things
<v Speaker 1>in your life that were going on. You're listening to
<v Speaker 1>I Want a New Drug. You're listening to Let's Go Crazy, Yes, Yes,
<v Speaker 1>And you're listening to Let's Hear It for the Boy, Right,
<v Speaker 1>and then you're gonna go watch Bill Murray and Dan

<v Speaker 1>couple of years, face to face, and one of the
<v Speaker 1>reasons that I can do that is because you don't
<v Speaker 1>have nose hair. Have you been talking to people and
<v Speaker 1>like you can't even concentrate on what they're saying because
<v Speaker 1>of their nose hair.
<v Speaker 2>Absolutely, they like tuck to you dangles, Yes, it wiggles,
<v Speaker 2>it's it's a total distraction. Absolutely, And so let me

<v Speaker 1>Right, so as everybody's preparing for those ceremonies, like in
<v Speaker 1>early summer, before it all begins, a young thirty year
<v Speaker 1>old director is with a newly dubbed movie star named
<v Speaker 1>Arnold Schwarzennigger in the backstreets of the suburbs of Los
<v Speaker 1>Angeles and they are driving a station wagon and it's
<v Speaker 1>just Jim and Arnold and a camera. No MIC's know nothing.
<v Speaker 1>They get out of the car and he's like, okay,
<v Speaker 1>we need to kind of whoa do you hear a siren?
<v Speaker 1>And Arnold's like yeah, and he's like, okay, well we
<v Speaker 1>need to kind of hurry. He's like, it's something wrong.
<v Speaker 1>He's like, yeah, we don't really have any permits to shoot,
<v Speaker 1>which is something you have to have in LA. You
<v Speaker 1>have to have a permit to be filming a movie, right,
<v Speaker 1>And so he's like, do we need permits and he's like,
<v Speaker 1>we don't have any money for permits, so no, we don't. Yeah,
<v Speaker 1>and so they park the car and Jim gets out
<v Speaker 1>and he's like, Okay, I want you to go over
<v Speaker 1>there and punch the glass out of that window.
<v Speaker 2>Yeah, And Arnold's like, uh, Jim, I'm kind of a
<v Speaker 2>movie star. You know, people might recognize me, right, not
<v Speaker 2>to mention I'm a big guy.
<v Speaker 1>It's not like you are subtle, right, You're six' five
<v Speaker 1>with two hundred and thirty pounds of, muscle mister olympia
<v Speaker 1>punching out. Windows he's, like is this real glass or
<v Speaker 1>is this movie? Glass he's, like just go do, it,
<v Speaker 1>man just go do. It and so, yeah they quickly
<v Speaker 1>filmed this last little bit of gorilla footage Where arnold looks,
<v Speaker 1>around punches the glass, out and steals the station. Ware
<v Speaker 1>awesome but before we get, there we need to go

<v Speaker 1>alien versus, aliens we talked About dan O'Bannon and his,
<v Speaker 1>history and one of the things that he did was
<v Speaker 1>that he faked A ufo landing with his. Dad, yeah, yeah,
<v Speaker 1>Yeah and oddly, Enough James cameron kind of had a similar.
<v Speaker 1>Experience do you remember. This when he was a young,
<v Speaker 1>boy he was very much into science and science. Fiction
<v Speaker 1>the first thing his dad was happy. About the second,
<v Speaker 1>thing his dad was not happy about, it also similar
<v Speaker 1>To Dan. Obannon and so he decides to impress his
<v Speaker 1>dad something he's learned in. School he's going to heat
<v Speaker 1>up air and make a hot air, balloon and so
<v Speaker 1>he and his brother and a couple of friends get.
<v Speaker 1>Together they light this thing. Up it starts. Floating he's so,
<v Speaker 1>proud and then all of a sudden they lose. Control
<v Speaker 1>it catches. Fire it starts flying across the, sky and
<v Speaker 1>they're lucky that they didn't set any houses or fields on.
<v Speaker 1>Fire BUT i mean they're having to ride their bikes
<v Speaker 1>to chase it down and it makes the news the next.
<v Speaker 2>Day, hey, dad did you hear about that fireball THAT
<v Speaker 2>i said and drifted around and almost burned down the?
<v Speaker 2>Neighborhood that was?
<v Speaker 4>Me?
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, Yeah his dad was none too happy about, That.
<v Speaker 2>BUT i was using the scientific method to make it.
<v Speaker 1>Work, yeah he was. Mad James cameron has a science
<v Speaker 1>fiction book in his. Hand his dad gets, mad takes
<v Speaker 1>the book, away throws it, away so don't be reading
<v Speaker 1>this crap, anymore And james just sneaks out about that my,
<v Speaker 1>night gets it out of the trash and continues his.
<v Speaker 1>Quest but his whole life he's spent trying to impress his.

<v Speaker 1>really bright student and he ultimately went to, college didn't
<v Speaker 1>like it and decided to. Quit he lived out in
<v Speaker 1>a suburb Of hollywood Called, brea which wasn't a particularly big.
<v Speaker 1>School he had been From canada, originally and he made
<v Speaker 1>a couple of friends out there Named.
<v Speaker 2>William wisher And Randy.
<v Speaker 1>Frakes, right and these guys are all into.
<v Speaker 2>Movies that's. Right they go See Star wars.
<v Speaker 1>Together, Yeah randy's a little bit, Older bill's a little bit.
<v Speaker 1>Younger So jim has dropped out of. College he is
<v Speaker 1>driving a truck working as a. JANITOR i mean he's
<v Speaker 1>cleaning gum off of the bottom of desks and delivering
<v Speaker 1>cafeteria food to the local. School his dad's not. Happy,
<v Speaker 1>yeah AND i haven't quite found his way, yet, Right
<v Speaker 1>but he does know that he loves, movies and so
<v Speaker 1>what he does is he goes over to THE usc
<v Speaker 1>library and studies books like he's getting HIS usc education
<v Speaker 1>on his.
<v Speaker 2>Own he like checks out dissertations and stuff from his.
<v Speaker 1>Students, yeah when people do a research study on, films
<v Speaker 1>he'll go get their study and read what they've written
<v Speaker 1>because he, knows, like these are guys my age who
<v Speaker 1>are doing the. Stuff this is WHAT i would be.
<v Speaker 5>Learning.
<v Speaker 1>Right, also near the area where they live is The Chinese.
<v Speaker 1>Theater so in nineteen seventy, seven right about the time
<v Speaker 1>that a guy Named George lucas is having a cheeseburger
<v Speaker 1>across the, street he And randy And bill all go
<v Speaker 1>see this movie. Together they buy their ticket nobody really
<v Speaker 1>knows about this movie, yet like it's brand. New and
<v Speaker 1>when they buy their, ticket she hands them a little,
<v Speaker 1>badge like a little button and it Says may The
<v Speaker 1>force be with. You and they're, like what is this
<v Speaker 1>and she's, like it's kind of like a theme of the.
<v Speaker 2>Movie, yeah just a, little just minor. Thing it's not
<v Speaker 2>gonna change.
<v Speaker 1>Pop culture or, anything, Right and so they go in
<v Speaker 1>and they watch the movie And James cameron has changed.
<v Speaker 1>Forever he, SAYS i know WHAT i want to do.
<v Speaker 1>NOW i had an, idea but now That i've seen
<v Speaker 1>what this guy can. Do and he WAS i, mean
<v Speaker 1>he was. Disturbed he was, like this is EVERYTHING i
<v Speaker 1>wanted to, do And George lucas just did it. Better
<v Speaker 1>and so what he does is he, says quit my.
<v Speaker 1>Job we need to go find some investors and we
<v Speaker 1>are going to make a. Movie they find, investors, dentists
<v Speaker 1>some dentists looking to invest some. MONEY i wonder if
<v Speaker 1>those guys ever got any return on.
<v Speaker 2>It they just wanted a tax shelter right.
<v Speaker 1>Here hold, this, yeah do.
<v Speaker 2>Whatever we don't really. Care we're just looking for a tax.
<v Speaker 1>Shelter so they make this twenty minute long movie. Ish
<v Speaker 1>it's really like the beginning of something that's supposed to.
<v Speaker 1>Continue like that was their, idea we'll make the beginning
<v Speaker 1>of the movie and then we'll get funding for the
<v Speaker 1>rest of the. Movie it's so similar to what he
<v Speaker 1>ultimately ends up. Making. Right the beginning of the movie
<v Speaker 1>has a lot of paintings that he, did including a
<v Speaker 1>blue woman Like. Avatar and then you've got this guy
<v Speaker 1>who's on this alien world and he starts to fight
<v Speaker 1>with the alien and who comes out to save. Him
<v Speaker 1>but this girl manually operating this larger, machine just like
<v Speaker 1>out Of.
<v Speaker 2>Aliens, right even the robot has these tank like treads
<v Speaker 2>that you see in Mull terminator And.
<v Speaker 1>Aliens, yeah absolutely check Out. Exogenesis you will be amazed
<v Speaker 1>that like three guys who had never done a movie
<v Speaker 1>before were able to accomplish what they accomplished with nineteen
<v Speaker 1>seventies technology and only twenty thousand.
<v Speaker 2>Dollars it's really, Amazing.
<v Speaker 1>But unfortunately it doesn't turn into a full movie deal
<v Speaker 1>for any of.
<v Speaker 5>Them.
<v Speaker 1>RIGHT i think what they ultimately got offered Was pillsbury
<v Speaker 1>offered to let them make a commercial for.
<v Speaker 2>Them, yeah The pillsbury Dough.
<v Speaker 1>Boy, right if that was you and me and that.
<v Speaker 1>Happened i'd be, Like, Pillsbury.
<v Speaker 2>Yes let's do.
<v Speaker 1>It but, yeah But James cameron's, like, no this is
<v Speaker 1>not that's not. It that's not. It this is not
<v Speaker 1>WHAT i came to. Do and so what he ends
<v Speaker 1>up doing is taking the movie over To Roger corman's production.
<v Speaker 1>Theater he takes it over, there shows it to them and,
<v Speaker 1>says will you give me a? Job and they, say,
<v Speaker 1>sure we need a production. Designer why did you come?
<v Speaker 1>On and you can help design sets and do some
<v Speaker 1>of that. Stuff and so he gets the job that.
<v Speaker 1>Way right about the same time that he got his,
<v Speaker 1>job this lady Named gail and heard just graduates From
<v Speaker 1>stanford and she gets a job As Roger corman's. Assistant
<v Speaker 1>talked a.
<v Speaker 2>Little bit about this in Our Alien Versus aliens episode last.
<v Speaker 2>Week so he gets on With Roger. Corman he's working
<v Speaker 2>as a production. Designer they hire this guy off the
<v Speaker 2>street Named bill Past.
<v Speaker 1>Oh, yeah He's. Bill paxson's, like, Hey i'd like to
<v Speaker 1>submit an. Application he's, like grab a paint, brush go
<v Speaker 1>bay that. WALL i haven't got the job. Yet he's, like, ah,
<v Speaker 1>SORRY i just go paint the, wall you're.
<v Speaker 2>Good, yeah we'll worry about that.
<v Speaker 1>Later and So Gail Ann hurd comes in because she
<v Speaker 1>wants to check around and see what's going. On she's
<v Speaker 1>the new assistant and when she comes, In james is
<v Speaker 1>so in charge of everything that's going. On she thinks
<v Speaker 1>he's the production, manager like the special effects, guy like
<v Speaker 1>he's the. Guy and as it turns, out she finds
<v Speaker 1>out later it's not. Him it's this other dude who's
<v Speaker 1>doing a crap. Job and so she goes back To
<v Speaker 1>Roger corman and basically, says, well the guy that you
<v Speaker 1>have in charge isn't doing, anything but this other, guy
<v Speaker 1>who is just a lowly nothing, guy he's running the, show.
<v Speaker 1>Right and so What Roger corman does is fire the
<v Speaker 1>top guy and Bring james in to be the main.
<v Speaker 1>Man and at that, point he was making two hundred
<v Speaker 1>dollars per, week and he's, Like, ROGER i really appreciate the.
<v Speaker 1>Promotion could you also give me a raise BECAUSE i
<v Speaker 1>cannot survive on, this, Right And roger's, like, well, Yeah
<v Speaker 1>i'll give you four, hundred And James cameron's, like that's
<v Speaker 1>really kind of, you BUT i can't survive on. That
<v Speaker 1>what was the guy before me Making he's, like, well
<v Speaker 1>he was making seven. Fifty he, goes, well you're giving
<v Speaker 1>me that. JOB i feel LIKE i should make seven.
<v Speaker 1>Fifty And Roger corman's, like, well, yeah but you don't
<v Speaker 1>have any. Experience he, goes, yeah the guy you just
<v Speaker 1>fired who couldn't do anything had all the. Experience i'm
<v Speaker 1>the one that's actually getting it. Done And Roger corman was,
<v Speaker 1>like you're, right you can have the seven fifty a.
<v Speaker 1>Week and so he ends up being a part of
<v Speaker 1>another movie that you've, Seen God bless. You that was
<v Speaker 1>a knockoff of the Movie Alien galaxy Of. Terror.
<v Speaker 2>Right we talked a little bit about how he was
<v Speaker 2>in charge of the guy who had cut off his own,
<v Speaker 2>arm and there was this shot where there were worms
<v Speaker 2>on the arm and they wanted the worms to, wiggle
<v Speaker 2>and the worms were just laying, there and so he
<v Speaker 2>devised a plan to attach some electrical wires to the
<v Speaker 2>prop arm and zap the crap out of those, worms
<v Speaker 2>and they came to life and, wiggled and The italian
<v Speaker 2>producers that were in the room observing, said that's the
<v Speaker 2>guy we want for our next. Movie. Piranatu The spawning.
<v Speaker 1>If you haven't heard Our Alien Versus aliens, episode go
<v Speaker 1>back and listen to. Those there's all kinds of good stories.
<v Speaker 1>There but one of the good stories is another guy
<v Speaker 1>who went to That chinese theater was a guy Named
<v Speaker 1>Ridley scott who had just finished directing his first. Movie like,
<v Speaker 1>Literally James cameron And Ridley scott saw the movie in
<v Speaker 1>the same theater days.
<v Speaker 2>Apart they may have bought popcorn standing next to each.
<v Speaker 2>Other you never, know you really don't, know you really don't.
<v Speaker 1>Know and so he went. On Ridley scott went on
<v Speaker 1>to Direct alien that's coming up here in just a.
<v Speaker 1>Minute That James cameron also becomes a super fan fanboy Of.
<v Speaker 1>Alien and so they go off to film this movie
<v Speaker 1>in The, caribbean And James cameron is going to have
<v Speaker 1>his first experience as a, director the highly ANTICIPATED i
<v Speaker 1>mean pretty sure some people camped out for tickets to
<v Speaker 1>See Piranha.
<v Speaker 2>TuS he thought you were excited For, terminator two people
<v Speaker 2>were fired up For. Paranatu this spawning, right except over
<v Speaker 2>the course of the, movie as he's, filming he's cutting,
<v Speaker 2>corners he's doing everything, Again he's working his butt. Off
<v Speaker 2>he's actually painting rubber fish in his hotel room when
<v Speaker 2>the guy comes in and fires.
<v Speaker 1>Him, yeah he's, like you're not getting you're not getting
<v Speaker 1>the right, shots you're not doing. This he's, Like i'm
<v Speaker 1>getting every. Amount he's, like you're spending too much. Time
<v Speaker 1>i'm just saying in this. Thing and he's, like you
<v Speaker 1>hired me to direct this. Movie why don't let me
<v Speaker 1>direct this. Movie he's, like, no you're.
<v Speaker 5>Fired.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, well he learns later on that that was just
<v Speaker 1>that guy's, play. Right he had been trouble for the
<v Speaker 1>folks In italy and basically he couldn't have a picture
<v Speaker 1>green lighted as a director. Himself it had to have
<v Speaker 1>Some american attached to, it and so he just Used
<v Speaker 1>James cameron as his.
<v Speaker 2>Ticket, yeah and he had done that. Before bring The american,
<v Speaker 2>on get the, financing start the, Picture fire that, guy take,
<v Speaker 2>over make your own.
<v Speaker 1>Movie so, again very similar to The Dan abandon, story,
<v Speaker 1>right it, Is, hey come over, here we're gonna make this,
<v Speaker 1>big great. Movie oh you're, fired send you, back and
<v Speaker 1>you've got no place to. Live so in the busyness
<v Speaker 1>of try and film all these, things he's staying up
<v Speaker 1>all night. Long he's wearing himself, thin not, eating like
<v Speaker 1>he's stealing bread off of the carts of.
<v Speaker 2>Outside in the. Hallway.
<v Speaker 1>Yeah, yeah he's he's in bad, shape and he ends
<v Speaker 1>up getting sick and he has a, fever and so
<v Speaker 1>in his sick, fever he has a.
<v Speaker 2>Dream so in this, nightmare, yea he is stalked by
<v Speaker 2>this unstoppable killing machine robot from the. Future, yeah sound
<v Speaker 2>relatively familiar to.
<v Speaker 1>You, yes it's called the. Firer no Fire it's called
<v Speaker 1>The terminator because he had been. Fired he had been.
<v Speaker 1>Terminated he was in a position where he was, Like
<v Speaker 1>i've lost everything because this guy THAT i have no
<v Speaker 1>control over just terminated. Me it's him against this thing
<v Speaker 1>it looks like a human. Being he shoots it feels
<v Speaker 1>like he's blown it, away and then this metal skeleton
<v Speaker 1>with only the torso crawls out from the wreckage to
<v Speaker 1>continue to try to hunt him down and kill.
<v Speaker 2>Him that's a MOVIE i would watch now before he
<v Speaker 2>totally Leaves. Jamaica. Yeah one of the guys in the
<v Speaker 2>Movie piranha too was this guy Named Lance, Hendrickson, yes
<v Speaker 2>who played the.
<v Speaker 5>Sheriff.
<v Speaker 2>Right we talked about how in order to have his sheriff.
<v Speaker 2>Badge they found a you, know save the whales little
<v Speaker 2>ten little happy meal, toy, huh that they used.
<v Speaker 1>Turned, it turned it upside. Down AND i think they
<v Speaker 1>bought the clothes of the guy who was selling the
<v Speaker 1>butt selling the save The whales button, too because it
<v Speaker 1>had like a stripe down the side that looked more
<v Speaker 1>like a police uniform than whatever it was that they
<v Speaker 1>had bought For Lance.
<v Speaker 2>Hendrickson James cameron paid for those pants out of his
<v Speaker 2>own pocket as he's stealing bread from other people's trays
<v Speaker 2>in the hallway at his.
<v Speaker 1>Hotel, Right so he And lance developed a good relationship
<v Speaker 1>during this and then he goes back, home and so
<v Speaker 1>within just a short amount of, Time James cameron writes
<v Speaker 1>this sixty page treatment slash script and he gets offered
<v Speaker 1>money for it and gets he's offered a decent amount
<v Speaker 1>of money for, it but with somebody else, directing And
<v Speaker 1>randy is the one that, says, listen you can take this.
<v Speaker 1>MONEY i mean this is good. Money it's like buy
<v Speaker 1>a few houses kind of. Money he's, like you can
<v Speaker 1>take this money and you'll be a. Screenwriter do you
<v Speaker 1>want to be a? Screenwriter he's, like, NO i want
<v Speaker 1>to be a, director and he, says then don't take the, money.
<v Speaker 1>Right and so What James cameron ends up doing is
<v Speaker 1>he Finds Gail, heard who has now formed her own production,
<v Speaker 1>company is looking for, material and he, SAYS i want
<v Speaker 1>you to produce this, script and she's, like this is.
<v Speaker 1>AMAZING i would love to produce this. Script who do
<v Speaker 1>you want to? Direct he goes, me as a matter of,
<v Speaker 1>Fact i'm the only one that's allowed to direct. It she's,
<v Speaker 1>like What he's, LIKE i will sell it to you
<v Speaker 1>for a.
<v Speaker 2>Dollar one dollar has.
<v Speaker 1>To be on the condition THAT i get to. Direct
