Ladies and gentlemen, Welcome to day five of Giant Bomb's Game of the Year
deliberations for the year of twenty ten. I'm Ryan Davis, Bitty Caravella,
Jeff Gersman, and Brad Shoemaker are all here to new days. Yeah,
I'm excited for the new years. Dick Clark's Rocking New Year's Eve. Yeah,
Dick Clark. If you actually character, if you play this podcast over
Dick Clark's Rocking New Year's Eve, it totally matches up. That's actually the
twist of the nerve is dens at Clark. Whenever Ryan Seacrest is talking,
it's actually Brad All. It all works out. Uh, That's not all
that's going on today. So we're deliberating on our Game of the Year categories
here, figuring out what what the nominees are, who the winners are.
Jeff Gerstman with the list. I have a list. What is the list
of categories we are deciding on to d today? We've got the Northeast who
the best performance by Nolan North awesome, always the most contentious, Yeah yeah
yeah, Best Competitive Multiplayer Best ending, the Take a Break Award for for
franchises that need to just take a take a break break. Uh, and
the best PlayStation three only game. All right, I like it? Hi,
Hi, I'm ready for today. I woke up today and I was
like, I am ready to come in and deliberate. Jeff, Let's let's
talk about Nolan North, Everyone's favorite increasingly overused voice actor. Yeah. So,
to help illustrate the way that he has been used quite a bit.
This is one of the categories where we just kind of nominate almost everything that
he's not a voice in. Do we have that list? Here's a list
that I've got right here. This is keymon. This is not a complete
list, Okay, but what we were able to figure this is. This
is what we This is the major stuff. There may be a few extra
additional voices sort of deals. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood as Desmond Miles. Yeah,
Toront Evolution, he's a guard at the beginning. Okay, Uh, Mafia
two he's everybody. Everyone is indditional voices. See let me look at the
credit here, just as Pedestrians, Call of Duty, Black Ops. He
is in this. He is doctor Edward Rick Toofen, which he also apparently
played in Call of Duty World at War. Not a character was it like
the Russia Flashback stuff? Maybe could be Okay, Spider Man Shattered Dimensions where
he was Ultimate Deadpool. Okay, uh, Singularity Alpha Protocol, that's right,
he eats it yeah in Singularity, Uh Protocol Final Fantasy thirteen. Yeah,
that's I believe that's an additional voices Role of fourteen or thirteen thirteen and
fourteen thirteen and fourteen. In fact, that Dark Void yea, which totally
came out this year. Yeah, right, is the main character. Yeah,
he's the main character there, Transformers War for Cybertron where he's Brawl and
some various other dudes and Trauma Team. Don't forget Singularity, I think.
And then I said he eats it in that. Yeah, stop following along
on your laptop, per I don't see you. That's did you say Army
of two I did not come out this year? Did come out this year?
Okay? It did? Tyson Rios whatever, the Salem Salem Army of
two the fortieth Hi, Hello, I'm okay. I still I still do
too. I think when when he does, I like that, I feel
like he did, you know, the games where he was a leading character,
games like a Sassin screed Brotherhood and Dark Void and Alva Protocol. I
think he did a good job. That's a bit much. Maybe he doesn't
need to be everyone's lead, but at least he seems like he's getting cast
a little differently in some of those things. He's not just playing Drake again.
Yeah. Yeah, I wish that Uncharted was successful enough that they could
just get him on lockdown and not do anything else. But but I feel
like, like when he does Desmond Miles, the characterization is so different that,
like, I don't playing Assassins Creed Brotherhood, I did not think once
about Nathan Drake. Uh. And I think that's, you know, partially
the credit for you know, Desmond Miles being a much different character. But
I also think that that Naughty Dog really and probably Nolan North to to a
certain degree, goes pretty far out of their way to give a very distinct,
specific voice to that character. And in Alpha Protocol, when he plays
the kind of crazy guy, yeah there that that you meet up with,
he's he's not the main character, but he's a he's a completely different sort
of guy showing his range, Yeah, which I think he does really well
there. I think that's that's probably one of one of my favorite Nolan North
performances of the year. It is probably Alpha Protocol. But in Mafia two,
Nolan North can talk to himself, steals, steals the show really close
closed. It's yes, there's really no other choice. Yeah. I did
not get a Nolan North in my Assassin's Creed because I played it in Italian,
which I now I feel kind of cheated. I feel unqualified for this.
Now I think Mafia two takes it. We don't have to narrow this
category down at all because he did, indeed do voices in all of these
games. And that's you know, that's the point is man, this guy
talks a lot living I get some work, and good for him. Get
it while you can. We're given the Northeast and Nolan North. Yeah for
Mafia two, all right, most Nolans the northeast of the North. All
right. Best competitive multiplayer. We've got three games here already, and I
feel pretty good about these three. We've got StarCraft two, Call of Duty,
Black Ops, and Halo Reach done and done. Do you have anything
else for this category? Anyone? I enjoyed as Sass Street Brotherhood, But
yeah, I don't think it's the best competitive of the year. It's interesting.
It's very interesting. What the Singularity stuff was interesting at a lower level,
so I will I'm just thinking like stuff that's not a first shooter.
Yeah, at a certain at a certain point, you mean like StarCraft two,
our winner for best competitive behind that. Yeah, actually, I don't
know. I'm done. You ask us could do the rest of this yourselves.
An entire country can't be wrong, or can it? Oh? No,
what is going on out there? People out there? Now? The
craziness is wrapped up? Yeah yeah, all right, that pipe seems a
little dry. So yeah, they all look like they're leaving though. Now
they're coming in here to yell about how they're leaving. Put on jackets,
all right, really see you guys. I mean five days stand up comedy
fest, day and night. Good of us to host that. Yeah whatever,
I don't know our bar could handle. I mean, you know,
you think the pipes were wet in this room. Get imagine getting all those
people into the bar back there is every day coming in being like, oh
what else? Jesus? All right? Best ending? All right, here
we go, best Ending. I've got three games here that we did already
kind of vet a little bit and uh, and and I know we cut
this list down before we started all this podcasting, Red Dead, Redemption,
Limbo, and bai Yo Netta. All twenty three of the nas have another
category that is best end, so one where you think it's really gonna be
the last ending, and then there's like five. How do we feel about
Brotherhood the ending? The ending? I think it's I think it's worth a
mention, But I think some of the other ones. You're gonna hate me,
Brad, But I would bump a limbo for the assassin screwed. Let's
see what happens in Brotherhood. No, no, no, I would maybe
bump Limpo Limp Limpo for uh for that. I don't even remember what our
reasoning was for putting a limbo on here. I don't know. It's it's
I think it was because anytime there was an open slot, you shouted the
limbo it was it was. It was interesting. It's interesting, like circles
back on itself, like, that's kind of interesting. I like the ambiguity
there. I think they played that well. The fact that the title screen
then shows what like two two corpses. Yeah, that was Yeah, that
was the part that I thought was pretty cool. That's kind of interesting.
It's implied that they both actually die. Assassin's Creed to Brotherhood ending though,
is interesting. Yeah, it's a very interesting ending, and I think that
it sets them up for shame. Yes, definitely stirs up some shit.
Uh. And it's it's it's good in the sense that they you don't see
it coming. Yeah, and a lot of the things over the course of
the game foreshadowed going in a completely different direction. Uh. And then they
when they turn that on. Yeah, it's like, fuck man, god
damn it. Really. Yeah, though at the time I wouldn't I couldn't
tell if I liked it at all or not. I was like, do
I hate Do I fucking hate this as the worst thing because I like all
the alien mumbo jumbo. Yeah that is. I like that. I like,
you know, telling more about where Desmond goes from here and kind of
helping with that stuff out. But I just didn't expect it to be so
integral to the Assassin's Creed that whole games, like an offshoot or something.
Yeah. Well, even like even up to that moment, it wasn't necessarily
right, like if you missed this one, you might still be okay.
Yeah, Yeah, it's something that they could have like summed up real quickly
in the start of of three of this like oh shit, yeah you can't
take yeah you need Yeah, you need to have known this when we started
up in the next game, because damn uh so, Yeah, that is
a that is a strong ending for that for that game startling, But does
that make it one of the best? I don't know, I'm asking.
I wanted to see if that if that had any resonance with the group well
StarCraft. Who Yeah, the last discussion was like a total story maybe not
amazing, but that ending is also a game changer in that universe. Similar
yeah, yeah, you will need to know what happened there to continue playing
that also not to let down like I don't know, yeah, like maybe
I wish it had been expanded on a little more. Uh, like it
happens and then that's it. I guess it with a brother, I guess
it just goes to show they actually do a pretty good job over the course
of that game, specifically of making you care more about those characters. Because
happened at the end of two I'd been like, yeah, fuck it,
whatever, let's let's go. But you grew a little more comfortable. Yeah,
brotherhood, they do a better job with it, so uh yeah,
and it sets up a bunch of stuff and a couple of theories floating around
down there. Uh so I was I was scrolling through the list over your
see if there are any other endings that leapt out at me over the course
of this fine year? How did how did crack Down to wrap up?
I didn't finish it with you continuing to play correct Down too. I'm assuming
you kill freaks, Yeah, a freak bomb freak nick takes please. We
talked about Klynch two ending out Yeah, uh, other m do anything interesting?
I feel like that they have a chance to do that. Anything was
kind of cool, Kenny, they Yeah, would you put it on this
list? Probably not? Okay, it makes the game better instead, of
course, that's always a good thing. I'll put it that way. But
I don't know that it's an amazing ending. Uh well, how do you
guys feel about the Reach ending? Uh? Kind of, you know,
tying it all together it was itself is pretty good. The actual like combat
that you're performing at the ending is bad gun thing? What even is the
ending of that game? What are we talking about? The end? You
got you got the thing to the guys and now now Cortana yea, and
you can have a Halo one. It's cool. It's cool that they tie
it in. But it's like the is that the end of the game that
the ending is so weird unless you're counting the post credits, like the last
last done, there's like five different things that you could be referring to as
ending in that game. I don't think, because I go. I think
it's the part where you get in the in the mac gun and shooting much
stuff. There's that, and then there's like you see the drop ship taken
off, Yeah, and then credits after that, Yeah, that's credit.
Then you have that last fight, your suicide, which is that's kind of
neat, and then you yeah, then you see the pillar of bottom like
flying towards Halo. I don't know, and we made it. Think we
lost. And then you see like your helmet on reach like years old.
Yeah, like flashing back to the beginning, just one thing after another in
the ending of that back around at the beginning. Yeah, A good Halo,
I don't know, I don't know, it's good. But Red did
I think Red Dead definitely stays uh we cut limbo. I'm I'm I'm okay
with cutting limbo. You know, there's it's cool. There's a moment and
I don't think Dark just has a great ending, but there's just a cool
scene where the game is pretty much wrapping up and you see the other three
dudes coming down. Yeah right, I'm just one. Yeah, and here
comes the rest of them. That part school, But it was definitely like
a fuck, yeah, hope they're with me? Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Yeah, that was cool. I could see including brotherhood here. Yeah.
I think so, I think, I think hell yeah, I'll say
to that. Okay, what else is there? It was, it was
an impactful ending. If nothing else, Yeah, what what's the other?
The one? Then? Ready? But I might I might go for StarCraft
over Bayonetta. I don't know. Yeah, with that, I enjoyed the
end sequences of Bayonetta because it's the last ditch effort for them to get all
their crazy shit out and see. But I don't. Maybe it's because I've
played it almost a year ago, but I remember a goddamn thing about the
the ending of Bandetta. Don't remember, like the space stuff and the and
the giant thing you got to climb on and then like stab You could be
describing any part of that game. You don't remember climbing and stabbing in space,
you don't remember falling into the things eyeball, and then you have to
play the other woman who has to kind of run up the giant goddess thing
and then pull her out of its eyeball because that you're in the eyeball and
the other dudes in the other eyeball. Oh, you're in space and there's
a there's a giant deed and you're inside an eyeball and they have to fight
your way up the thing and you're playing as the friend nothing, and then
there's a that you think it's over and then you have to you're a rocket.
You're like a meteor or something heading back to Earth. I remember you
finishing Banetta in the office and just fucking I don't even know, it just
keeps going. And then there's like there's like a five minute dance sequence,
and then remember the dance is going to be on this list? What if?
What if it's what if it's read dead Bonetta and StarCraft thing. Yeah,
I'm okay with bouncing. Yeah, Like there's a there's a crazy moment
at the end of Brotherhood. But yeah, yeah, that sounds like that
stronger that for you. I think Red Dead wins that. It's crazy.
It might be the best ending I've ever seen in a video game. It's
pretty intense. It's dude, it's really title card they handle it so well.
A title card is amazing. And then the actually there their first title
card, Jeff is the last thing you see in that game. Yeah,
fucking amazing. Oh so good. Yeah, that's good. It's powerful.
It really is. When it when that happens, it's just like, oh
my god, I guess I'm done. That was that was terrific. You
certainly know when you're done with all right? Uh, moving on? They
take a break Award for the franchise that we think needs to just give it
a rest for a while. Maybe maybe take some time regroup, come back,
come back and give it another shot after you've spent some time thinking about
this instead of just actively making it as quickly as possible. Final Fantasy,
Guitar Hero and My note are the three games. Seriously, guys, seriously
to double up on My note Book. If we didn't color, if we
didn't know that that Infinity was coming, or infinitely if it was coming,
I would say BioShock, Yeah, but is there an indication they're going to
do another Rapture game? But no, Like I feel like they kind of
like, look, we are going in a different direction with this, and
they aren't really churning those either, so right, but you know, Final
Fantasy, I mean, you know, look at it, fourteen fourteen.
It seems like all of the guys that we're working on originally have been forced
to take a break and replaced with other du Although I don't even know if
fourteen really counts as what we consider Final Fantasy. I don't even know.
I try not to consider Final Fantasy. I mean that's two of like eighteen
Final Fantasy products that came out on various systems, and it's thirteen and fourteen
came out this year. Like those are those are four number? Yeah,
you know obviously one's inn mmo, it's it is is a very different different
beasts. I mean eleven and fourteen should have been called Final Fantasy Online one
and two. Right, yes, but what we consider to be the main
series Final Fantasy needs to but they need to that, you know that,
Like take what you're doing with versus thirteen and Ajito and like everything you got
in the works well, and and the thoughts, the renewed thoughts you're probably
having now of like maybe we could just do seven. Maybe that would get
him back. No, just fucking back. The worst part is if they
remade seven right now and didn't change the right things about it, Yeah,
it would suck, right because that's a thirteen year old game now. Yeah,
even that, even that like remade of an intro they made it is
kind of dated now and when they showed that it looks like a higher polygone
version of that intro, right though, I would I mean, I don't
think any of us knows what you do with Final Fantasy. But it also
but stop doing anything a little bit and figured out they've released at least one
every year. It hasn't been any so yeah, but they just instead they
got to a point where like Final Fantasy thirteen all of a sudden balloons to
a universe of four games plus a cell phone game, and you know,
yeah, they I think it's weird that. Plus they're still do a decim
coming. They just yeah, they got they got too ambitious with how big
each Final Fantasy release was going to be and I feel like it's just swallowed
them up, Like it's gotten to the point where they have consait. I'm
trying to think back on the timeline. I think it's happened twice now where
they have announced the next game in the franchise before the currently in development game
has shipped. Do you remember that from A three when they're like they announced
the they put up on that screen fourteen and then Sony Prescott Yeah right,
yeah, and what and it was like it drew the logo in and as
the fourteen took shape, everybody was just like, what the fun? But
here's the best part that happened with thirteen too, was not on the market
when they have the big gala unveil for thirteen three to take a break,
Yeah, Guitar Hero, they might be. I don't know. They forced
to take a break. They're gonna someone's gonna make a Guitar Hero game for
Activision next year. I think you can you can count on that. They
need to stop. They will be never soft, but they should, Yeah,
they should. They should probably not do that for a little bit.
Command and Conquer. Yeah, Manner four came out this year. I think
they're taking I think they needed it. Yeah, but they clearly needed it.
I think they pretty much said as much, right they did. They
also said that we're not quite done with Command and Conquer, so maybe they'll
reboot it. It seems like the only thing that to do now, right,
just to put out a game called the Command and Concerts. They're just
gonna call it Sea and see there was some recent quote for saying, yeah,
Command Cocker, Yeah totally. That was not the story about those guys
helping with Wait, what was the story. There's something involving uh, Godald
mighty, what's the visceral? The story involving Visceral? Remember that was like
they thought, you know, the viscerals making a com and they're like,
no, we're not. But someone is so yeah, uh it sound like
that, all right, right, it's Colors not not terrible. They're beyond
us now. They're gonna make three to five Sonic games a year, regardless
of what we said. But you know, the years crop of Sonic games
were less mediocre than previous years, so you know, it's not great,
but it's better than Sonic. The Hedgehog has that SmackDown series doing. Yeah,
they that's should that take my notebooks place. I'm not making that for
us, remember maybe I watch Yeah, that's true, they're not. They
did come out and say that they're you know, they're not. They're not
making it for adults like games for kids. That's the award for please please
make it better award. I think, please make something different than what you're
making award. But that doesn't really count my notebook, if only because I
don't want to read that right, break, break no more, no more,
my notebook colors, how about go ahead? Are you gonna say,
yeah, you say, how about how about like where we wear ds?
I wear? Oh no, I was gonna say Grand Turismo. Oh god,
right, it's cool. I know, I know, I know.
No, they never stopped working on its true. I don't even know what
I know. That's I feel like Final Fantasy Guitar Hero and my notebook is
pretty good last yeah really, oll, I only know what my notebooks have.
They actually made a fable. Oh dude, that's not a bad idea.
That's not a bad idea. But I feel like they haven't. I
don't for men personally, they haven't killed it yet. Next year it was
it was you know, it's one rotten one yeah, but you want them
to they have a stop before they dig the hole too deep, right,
But I still feel like they could easily turn it if they came out with
another one. Uh, they could turn around. There are six my notebook
games I believe and won my postcards. Uh. Like, I feel like
Fable they were at a crossroads they made they made bad decisions right like coming
here and there. Like Final Fantasy, I feel like they are trapped,
like they have been kind of like like a little messed up for a while.
But just like how they're announcing them and all that stuff, and that's
that's they're building Fable. They made a bad Fable game. If they too
like double down and said like, all right, we realize we totally screwed
up. I mean, it's a bad choices in that Fable game. It's
not like a terrible game. It just seems like you should have gone left.
And let's just hope they recognize what the bad choices were. Yeah,
they don't need the benefit of time and distance to figure that out. Well.
Also, like Fable one, it was pretty flawed and then Fable two
is pretty awesome, So maybe they're maybe they Yeah, it's like Star Trek
movies. Final Fantasy has lost its identity. It's crazy. They have so
many different teams working on different even number like main series Final Fantasies have different
teams making them right. It's just kind of all over the place. Uh
yeah, they focusing on the wrong stuff in a lot of cases. And
it's also a weird one because each one is an independent universe, so you
just get these weird spinoffs of like which universe am I in? In the
final Between that and looking at you know, what Final Fantasy fourteen is and
what they ask of people that are trying to play it, that's that's a
pretty clear cutcase. Even if all this other messed up stuff wasn't happening with
that franchise, that would be a pretty good indicator. Yeah. Yeah,
and I really want a good Final Fantasy as to see see those guys best
work. As an addendum to this category, can we say please stop numbering
the Final Fantasy games we need? I think they just had the rereleasing four
with that, Uh was another doing something weird with that. It's like that
in the after Years thing and like some more stuff after that. Well that's
fine, you know, but you can't just re release the good final fantasies
over and over again. So how do we feel about this list? My
notebook? I don't. I don't feel like my notebook love my noteook because
I can't. I just I can sit with my notebook because it kind of
just makes me angry. Yeah, like, like, what are you doing?
Way charging for this is this is the reason why. This is one
of the reasons why the DSi wear stuff It died is dead because of this.
Maybe I'm maybe I'm maybe I'm a what's it call about objecting? Yeah,
projecting these guys. Yeah, I feel like we're like we're wasting one
of three meaningful slots here on something that's basically a job. Well, that
Mafia that they need a break. They took the break between those two games.
Mag Mafia is faster and maybe it'll get better. Uh No, I
doubt it. But Metroid just came back. Yeah, I don't know.
Fable and GT both you could make a case GT No. I mean,
like you guys said, it's not like they stopped for a while. They
Wow, this hasn't worked have helped granchism five. I think they took too
long of a break. Yeah, you're maybe right, maybe right, Yeah,
how about Crackdown. That's all the one of the second one. That's
yeah, it's really the franchises that have been beaten into the ground. SmackDown
might actually be the best choice. Yeah, Uh, Tony Hawk is beyond
our help as well. They took their break. This is practically the Tony
Hawk Ceremonial Award for take a Break, presented by has Hawks doing all right,
so let's come back next year, right? Uh? I would I
don't know, like I would say those goddamn Harry Potter games because they would
ship those out every every single one's different. It's not like and it's not
always the same team. It's not like the same people just driving their ideas
into the ground over and over again. It's going like this when you got
two wandsuck Man SmackDown. I think it is a good a good example.
You know, that engine just continues to get older and older, and uh
and and and it resembles actual television wrestling less and less, even though with
this year they did do some interesting stuff kind of around the periphery, but
it's it has nothing to do with actual wrestling at this point. It's right,
it's so like the gameplay of that game is so crazy. It's just
like like weird legacy stuff. They just need to rebuild that ship from the
ground up. Yeah, exactly. Be interesting again, even if they rebuilt
it and and you know, did a lot of the similar stuff. From
an idea perspective, you know, if they just kind of clean up the
control and just just modernize the look of it. Yeah, it's you know,
the animation and and those systems just look grungy. All right, I'd
be fine with that, all right, though I do think that my note
book should take a pre I'll just skate three. No skate three, okay,
yeah, okay, Yeah. I think you know that they've been given
quotes lately saying that they think skateboarding is over. That's that's it's not as
big as it was. So I think that, you know, it's too
bad because like the skate series is still pretty good, like they haven't messed
it up yet. But but it's an interesting perspective to be like, we
know when to Yeah, exactly, you don't think this skate We don't think
skateboarding is going to make us money for much longer. They took a look
at Shawn White skateboarding decided they were not going to debase themselves. You know,
I think maybe this would be an unpopular thing, but I think the
Halo series could take a break it is. I think I think, well,
they're they're gonna be putting on transition from it. But but I'm saying,
like the Halo brand, I think that I think I tend to agree
that like, this would be the game, like if nothing had changed,
this would be the game where you'd be like, I think maybe we kind
of are you curious out I'm dying to see what okay, yeah, to
see what three four three actually does and to see what Bungee is doing instead
of Halo. All right, but Reach was good, No, like Reach
was great, but uh, it would make me fearful for more Halo.
Halo saturation, well, I think I think next year could could very well
be the year for that. Yeah, but I think we're still like these
are they're putting out good Halo product, assuming anything anything that next year we
don't. We don't know it's been announced, so I think final fantasy probably
it's and it's just I think part of it for them is like because these
games are so huge and and ambitious in some ways that it takes this expensive
at least expensive to make and like time consuming. I feel like they are
more than like a lot of Japanese developers are having trouble playing catch up.
But when your dev cycle is so long and you're already in a franchise that's
so entrenched time in certain tradition, like you were just left so far behind
by the time you actually come out, they're kind they're kind of prisoners of
their own momentum at this point, like they have to keep making them in
a sense, I mean, they must sell well. Right in Japan,
I still still do as well. It's not not it's not a sales failure.
Fourteen I think is you know, sho end up being a money losing
venture for them. I was talking to somebody and they said that I think
when my little brother said, they haven't actually charged. Yeah, they've extended
the free trial yet again. And they put out a note like like Wada
came out and said like, so here are the new people who were in
charge of Final Fantasy fourteen. Right, it's literally a new set of credits.
Yeah really yeah, it's like executive producer, new guy. Yeah,
Like they've they've rolled the team, but have has anyone here really like cared
for a Final Fantasy game since like ten, Like that's I'm always people like
twelve, I know, but ten was the last one I really follow.
I always get my hopes up, like and then you know, uh this
it just seems like it seems like they stepped away from it for a good
chunk of time. They could actually recapture some of that. Yeah, the
heat from that era, like seriously from PS one to early PS two,
like like those games if they did not make a Final fans and those sounds
crazy, but no Final Fantasy product for like two or three years. Imagine
they like hype that would come out. They were all right, now we're
provided they were serious about actually bring something crazy, right, and they were
just like, wow, a new Final Fantasy game. Yeah, let's see.
I think that totally wins. It needs I mean it needs to be
like with that that PlayStation one era where they completely shifted gears of what what
Final Fantasy meant from like an aesthetic perspective, Like they haven't they haven't really
done that since there was a there was a pretty significant kind of changing of
the guard at that point. Yeah, like the principal creative people behind it,
right, and those people have been around pretty much since then, Yeah,
more or less unchanged, like some things have changed, but the people
that did the seven stuff are still around doing stuff. So all right,
that brings us to best PS three only game. Wah, are they're already?
Huh? I've got a list. Are you checking it twice? No,
let's get out any times. Are you checking it just the once?
So let me know if you've got anything to add to this list. I've
got God of War, three Heavy Rain, Sports Champions, Grand Tourismo five
three D Dot Game Heroes, Mag, mod Nation, Racers, and Joe
Danger. It's actually not a bad list. Yeah, that's not at all.
When you read it out, those better than the Xbox It is significantly
longer and more interesting than the Xbox list, for sure. I did not
have any experience with Sports Champions mag Mag's really good, you know, and
then they've been supporting it well since release. They've done some good stuff there.
It's a it's a very big kind of grand multiplayer shooter that you don't
really get on consoles all that often. You know. It's not quite the
battlefield style of vehicles and all that. It's not white there. Yeah,
but it does give you that large battlefield feel of of of taking stuff over
and moving over and doing all this crazy stuff. It's a it's a really
well done game. It is not always outstanding, but they've they've done some
cool stuff and they've they've opened up kind of the faction uh specific battles to
allow more people to play on more maps and and and stuff like that.
Three D doc game era that where Darksiders is like kind of modern Zelda taken
in this kind of cool new direction. Three D dock game heroes like it
is almost a little too much like it. It's it's it's almost a little
too cute for its own good in the way that it tries to be Zella
spoof at that point. Yeah, and the swords are really big, and
I think that's cool. It's actually it's actually when it is when it hits,
it is actually kind of funny. Yeah, and it looks great,
you know, it's just a neat, neat looking game. You can kind
of customs your own, dude that they were like tilt shift kind of perspective
to give things an odd Yeah, Yeah, it's odd. It's weird.
That's neat it is. You know, Got a War three. They made
a kick ass, badass Got a War game, And I've never been the
hugest got a War fan, but I think that game definitely belongs on this
list. That's something everybody can appreciate it, right, yeah, fight god
man, mess. I don't know that any of us feel really strongly about
Heavy Rain. I think Heavy Rain should be on the list, on the
list, Yeah, yeah, I think it's it's deeply but it is.
But it's ambitions are unlike anything else. You're right, You're right? All
right? Do you feel like Grando five? I don't think any of us
are gonna pick that game. Any of us are gonna fight for that gam
No interest, all right, no interest? But I like, Yeah,
I like I like Heavy rand list. I like gott a War on that
list. Okay, So that leaves us with Sports Champions, three D,
Dot Cam Heroes, mag mod Nation Racers, and Joe Danger. There are
parts of mod Nation Racers that I think are kind of fun, yeah,
but I don't. But as a whole, there's some stiff competition in here.
Yeah, load times oh man, Yeah, but there's the customizable like
downloading some of those cars. Oh there's some crazy stuff in there like that.
That that game in a way almost matches like Little Big Planet for yeah,
just for ridiculous the breadth of yeah, yeah, the tracks, the
cars, the characters like this. Those load times are kind of kill.
Those load times are brutal, proved them. Yeah, and still kind of
it's still rough, still still need to be better. So what's up with
Sports Champions. It's a really it's a well done WE Sports clone in a
lot of ways. You know, it's got Bacchi you like people, Yeah,
all right. The frisbee golf is pretty good. The archery, I
think is is well done. Archery is really super satisfying. I really enjoyed
the art that was That was the that was the prover for me. Was
was the archery. That's a that's the double yeah double double double move.
You can do it with one, but it's better with two. You do
you do it with two? And it's like so much motion control stuff.
You feel like I have to really measure my movement to make sure that it's
always keeping track of everything that I'm you're not moving too fast? Yeah,
I'm afraid like I'm if I moved too fast. It's gonna not know where
the thing is supposed to be. I yeah, I think I think it
can be. It can that can happen. But like doing the archery stuff
with that, like you were making some specific complex motions and it really is
following you and it's it's impressive and it keeps up. Yeah, and it
is. It doesn't you don't really run into that problem of like just too
quickly. Yeah that thing word because it's the challenges for that are time based.
So it's a lot of like get out as many shots in this time
as you can. So it's like it's telling you move fast, move moving
this way as fast as you can. And the entire time it was so
this this moves like proof of concept games. The lack of personality in the
art design is a little unfortunate. It really looking super sony Europe. The
thing is, I don't even think so of Europe made it. No,
it made in the styles, but it does have that kind of like sterile,
weird stereotypical kind of it looks like home. Yeah, I was gonna
say it kind of does. It kind of looks like what lately Actually,
Yeah, it's a low point for that product. But still, you guys
got a lot of love for Joe Danger, right, Yeah, I do
think it's cool. I just don't know that it it. I don't know
that it beats out what we've got on this list already. It's a strong
list. I'm okay with that. Three I do. I do really like
Joe Danger. Yeah, wait, what's the three? Sports over Mag?
I think I think that's the fight is Sports over Mag? But did we
did we drop three? D? Yes? I don't. I don't think
it beats out, but we've got so and I guess I don't think Joe
Danger does either. All right, Jeff, Fight with Yourself Mag or Sports
Chance. Mag's really neat. But at the same time, it's no kill
zone. It's not like in terms of games that are only available on a
PlayStation that involve you shooting stuff. It is not necessarily the best, not
that that's the only tricks, it's still it's still for me, MAG suffers
from the and yeah, this is it's a game you really have to invest
a bunch into before it starts paying off. Yeah, it's you know,
you just if we first get in that game, it's like run, run,
run, run round and run shot dead, don't know where the shot
came from? Fuck, and then respond and repeat. Yeah. Because of
the scale and because it really does I think that they do make good on
their promise of this. You know, these large scale battles that are broken
down into smaller groups. But if you aren't paying attention or there isn't that
structure isn't in place, if someone isn't there playing that role, it seems
like it kind of falls apart. Yeah. I never felt like I got
the suns of the larger size of the battlefield so much like you can only
really concern yourself what's happening right in front of you. Yeah, it's definitely
something that you pick up on after you've played it a whole lot. It's
also one of the things where until you've played it a whole lot, you
can't get into the one hundred and twenty eight player. Well I did play
some of these, But also really like at that point you are you are
a grunt class. You're not supposed to care about anything other than you know,
you and your teams survived. Yeah, once you become like squad leader
and start actually giving orders and taking orders, and you know the way they've
set up the chat channels and stuff is nicely done, so it sound like
it does open up eventually, but you gotta you gotta work for it.
Yeah, you definitely have to work for it. I don't know if that
aspect of has changed. I can't say I've played it too much recently.
But on the other hand, like Sports Champions, Sports Champions is really accessible.
It's a great proof of concept. It is we sports it is.
But aside from way less style, yeah, graphics, and aside from having
stuff like Bocci in there. Right, yeah, the same game, Like,
they didn't really do a whole lot new with it, and we definitely
definitely want to keep Heavy Rain. Yeah, I think so. All right,
I'm okay with cutting mag. I'm okay with cutting mag all right,
Well, how do you feel that Heavy Rain? Are you flawed? But
yeah, it is interesting to make it through. Yeah, like those things
that nobody else did, I would, I would. Yeah. I think
God of War three is the game. Yeah, I agree. Yeah,
I didn't. I played very little of it, but I mean it it
is a God of War game. Like they didn't reinvent God of War,
but they take advantage and beautiful of the PS three, Like Yeah, that's
ship in that game looks amazing beautiful. Yeah, uh, there's there're the
sequences where you are flying up these chains that are holding whatever the heavens interrupting
it happens often. It was a cold times. Yeah, you're going up
and down a lot, and it was cold times. But that stuff looks
crazy and amazing. Plus it's got what's a ripped horn in it? All
good things do Yeah, sold all right? Actually, congratulations to God of
War three. Yeah. Yeah, God of War seems like the sure thing.
Whereas like they kind of shot for the moon with heavy rain, but
then kind of stumbled in the execution a little bit. It did take worse
act sense. So yeah, there's yeah, there's really just a couple of
things that they a couple of choices that they made with with heavy rain that
had it gone a different way, I might have been fighting real, real
hard for that. Because it's it's compelling, it's interesting they are comment comment
It makes you really look forward to what those guys do next. Absolutely absolutely,
and for an interesting vision of what games could be. Sure. Yeah,
so it's got a war where do you ripped the heads off dudes constantly?
So I feel like God of War is on the cusp of Take or
Break totally. Like I was going to mention it, but the guy I
was, but God of War three was actually really good and this is kind
of the natural stopping point. Yeah, so let's see again this is another
one from here. Yeah, did they announce anything else? Got a war
related after Kreatos in Mortal Kombat? Okay, I mean maybe we'll see next
year. They've said this is like the end of the Creatos story, right,
so like I think they hit there. This is stopping points on the
IP that makes a lot of money, So there will be something God of
War stories, yeah, the God of War. Yeah, Oh, Jeff,
give us a rundown of now that we've we've come to the close of
day sinko. Yeah. The Northeast Best performance by Nolan North goes to Nolan
North for Mafia two. Good job talking to yourself, congratulations Nolan North for
that. Best Competitive Multiplayer goes to StarCraft two, Best Ending Red Dead,
Redemption to Take a Break Award, Final Fantasy, and the best PS three
only game, God of War three. Something tells me I'm gonna be writing
up all of these congratulations winners. Yeah, maybe and that's it for Day
five, gentlemen. Yeah, today will be my top ten list. Well
done, so keep on out for that. Comen out for that, and
again we will have more more guest top ten lists, and we'll have more
for you in twenty eleven. That's right, we'll see you next year,

send it on one one one one one one one one. Yes, it
