What we want to see from the Phillies before the playoffs

They're back in action on Tuesday night against the Marlins. Six games left in the regular season. The Phillies magic number to clinch a first round byas two. Any combination of Phillies wins Dodgers losses that add up to two, and the Phillies get that first round by. What do we want to see the final week of the season, Let's talk about it. There's not a lot of drama, but there are some things I think that you kind of want to see happen, or you hope happens. I've got something in mind that I would like to see happen this week. What about you, Jim, Let's start with you. Is there what would you like to see happen this week for the Phillies as they go into the bye week.

Speaker 3: Well, there are a number of things, but you know, I think one of the big ones I'd like to see is I would just love to see the offense click and you know, get warm, maybe approaching hot, just because we all know how occasionally hit or miss it can be. And I'd love to see the offense finish on a strong note, give themselves some confidence, love to she Schwore would get a couple more get up to maybe fifty five, Little Sammy Hagar, I can't drive fifty five.

Speaker 3: And I would also like to see Alec Boum keeps swinging it well he had a good weekend, because I think it's really vital that they get, you know, a right handed bat behind Harper that makes teams pay a little bit if they don't pitch to him right little protection there, and I think Bom is capable of being that guy healthy now if he gets down a little bit of hot streak, offer Harper some protection. And the final thing I'd like to see offensively, you know, one big kind of ball of wax is Harper get it going and finish strong, and finish hot, and finish in.

Speaker 3: Because I think when he feels good, and I'm not even talking about physically. Obviously have to feel good physically, but I think when he feels good mentally, I think his whole game takes off and he plays at a higher level with some some swagger and some confidence and some I can't wait to rip your head off. So those are some of the areas on the offense under one heading of offense, I would like to see get going.

I mean, and he's right, you know, he's like, I want still tear it up, you know, Like that's the kind of Bryce Harper you want to see.

Speaker 2: So the Uh, well, it's kind of playing off Jim. I want to see Trey Turner come back this week, And this is part of this kind of like duvetails off of what Jim's talking about. You want to see Trey Turner come back this week playing a game or two, maybe three games. I don't know how many games he's gonna play. He's gonna face live pitching on Tuesday and Wednesday, I think at the ballpark on hits one hundred percent running, He's going to get into the game. You wanted to see some pitches. Man, he was having a great season before he got hurt. He's going to be motivated. He's going to be motivated just to kind of get his you know, just to get back and sink and get his timing down. But he also has a chance to win a batting titles. He would be the first Phillies player to win a batting title since Ritchie Ashburn in nineteen fifty eight. Wow, pretty amazing. So I actually I was looking up Whitey's season there that year and I'm like, I wonder who finished second, and then Willie Mays finished second. Willie May's finished he batted three forty seven. So then I had this like weird, you know, like deja vuom moment. I go, I actually think I might have talked to Willy Mays about this once, and I actually did. I wrote this book years ago. It's called The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. And I just want to read this quote because I was like, I'm pretty sure Willy Mays talked about Whitey beating him for the batting title nineteen fifty eight. And he did, and he he said, so listen to this. So on September twenty second, Willie Mays is batting three forty two. Whitey's batting three thirty eight. White He finishes the season fourteen for twenty one. He bats six sixty seven.

Speaker 2: Willie Mays goes ten for twenty one, bats four to seventy six to finish the season. So Whitey beats him by three percentage points. And this is the quote from Willy Mays. He said, uh, I only hit twenty nine home runs that year. I should have hit more, but I was trying to win the batting championship to show people I could do everything. And he called white he goes Richard. He called him Richard. I guess he goes, Richard must have looked in the paper and saw me pretty close. A guy called me the next day after the season in and said, guess what, Willy, I said, what's going on? He said, Richard bunted four times to beat you. So I called him up and said, hey, man, what's.

Speaker 2: It's wing the bat. It's late in the season. Nobody's worried about them. Well, and then Willy, I wrote in the book, Willy laughed about it and said, I really like that guy. He was a great guy. So you know, yeah, finally, I can't believe I remember I talked to Willie Mays and he had a suite at eighteen or Oracle Park and I somehow convinced giants pr to let me go up and talk to him for like twenty minutes break. It was absolutely amazing, a total thrill. But anyway, so you want to see you want to see Trey Turner come back, get his timing down, most importantly, be healthy, maybe show that he can run at a decent speed, and then he'll have the bye week to continue to recover and last and all that put him back in the top of the lineup. That is huge. That is absolutely.

I don't know that he's the guy that you want to necessarily hand the ball to in the eighth inning to try to close things out. I don't want them to have to go to Juan Douran for two innings in the eighth and ninth and so Robertson's done a nice job, but you know, Kirkering struggled a little bit. Somebody's gonna have to step forward. Could it be a guy I don't know, Walker.

He's gonna have to do some mix in the match, and you gotta get you know, those guys they come in certain times in the in the inning, they got to get three outs. It's gonna be really interesting. And they're gonna have to almost forces those three left handers in the rotation to go deep. So I want to see somebody step forward. I don't know who that's gonna be.

Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I'm just gonna give a shout out to the back half of the of the lineup. I think the guys in the bottom half of the lineup has really really stepped up.

Speaker 1: It gotten to the point where, you know, the team was relying on Kyle, Schwarber and Turner to do everything, and it has been pretty cool to watch marsh do what he's doing lately, stop stepping it forward. It was nice to see Alec Boem do what he did at the end of that series. He wasn't playing obviously in LA but that's nice.

Speaker 6: To see him, you know, add on a little bit, you were getting some stuff from Kepler. Even Cassianos was was adding, you know something in that the back end of that lineup, and I think that's a really important piece. It's finally gotten to the point where the depth that they thought in their lineup was that they thought that they had in the beginning of the season has started to come to fruition. And it makes this a pretty damn potent lineup because now you don't have to.

I'll tell you what, I love watching that guy play center field. He plays with the flare out there a ball, you know, there'll be a ball in the gap, and he kind of back pedals over to it like he's doing I mean, it's it's great. I think it's so cool. And you know what a difference he's made defensively as well, just just tremendous. So I'm picking a guy that played I think he only played once on this entire road trip, and that was Raphael Marshawn and I wanted to shout him, give him a shout out because of that really awesome go ahead, game winning home run in the ninth inning on last Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium. Just a cool moment for him. The ball just hits the top lip of the fence and it skips into the stands and talking to him after the game, and he had such a huge smile on his face. As a guy that does not play a lot, obviously behind JT. Real Muto, So you know how hard it is to to get your to get your timing and the rhythm at the plate. I mean, it's just it's just damn near impossible when you're not playing. But he's made the most of his opportunities. He's played pretty well in that spot. And just a really fun game. You know, remember Otani hit that home run in the bottom of the eighth, the Dodgers scored another run on a sack fly to tie it, and there comes Raphaele Marshan and it's the big bomb. And yeah, again he was great talking about it after the game. So much fun. So I want to give him a shout out. Do you seldom used backup catcher Marsan.

This is a guy who replaced probably the most popular player on the on the team, Garrett Stubbs, and he's actually done a really really nice job back there behind the plate, calling games, working hard, putting himself in a position to work with his pitcher as well.

He loves Gray's Anatomy reruns, and he loves Kevin Hart's humor, and that's how he learned English. But he also mentioned how helpful Garrett Stubbs has been. You know, some town wants to back mentoring him a little bit, helping him, you know, with game calling and setting up hitters and relating to pitchers. So I mean that shows what a big man Garrett Stubbs is to help basically groom your successors.

He may you know, and hey, this is not like we're not trying to kill Aaron Nola, but this is about winning baseball games and making sure that you know, it doesn't unravel quickly.

He's like, oh, you know, j T has been pretty good there. Then after the game on Sunday he's like, I think I man have to move him up. So those three right, he's he's your cleanup hitter. And then what you have Marsh hit fifth, Bader hit sixth. When I'm talking about when trade Trey returns, well, how do you guys see the bottom half of that lineup? What's the best way to set up the bottom hat It's a great cup lineup.

Speaker 3: I think it's I don't see Rob's being Rob's personality to make a drastic change. With Schwarber and Harper, I think they're going to be kind of right where they've prospered this season. Especially Schwarber hitting in front of Harper, it's it's been a it's been a big boon for him. He's going to figure out a way to make sure Harper gets some pitches in October and Bona one of them. Uh, you know, it's an important role.

Speaker 2: So the last thing, guys Phillies magic number to clinch the bias two. So the way it lines up, they would play the number three or the number six seed winner in the NL Wildcard Series, the number three seed would be the Dodgers, so obviously whoever they play is gonna be the heavy favorite. We don't know who the number six seed is going to be. As of today, the Reds and Mets are tied, but the Reds have the tiebreaker and then the Diamondbacks are game behind them. But yeah, maybe they get away from home and they kind of relax and because that tension isn't real. I mean, I remember the tension Game seven of the twenty twenty three NLCS. I mean that those fans were so wound tight early in that game, and then they got behind Game five of the twenty eleven NLDS man that place is tight, so maybe it'll help the Mets out.
