Speaker 3: You know it was going to come down to the wire with how difficult that course is. I mean, do you know that I actually played that course? At one point. I had a buddy of mine named Mark Flaherty, who's got to rest his soul. He passed away in the covid uh era and He was a roommate of my brothers at Duke University, and he was a controller in Pittsburgh. He was the city controller for at one point, but he was to go to Pittsburgh all the time. I think he was a member there and he took me there one time a long time ago. And I don't really even remember the course that well. I probably I probably butchered it. But yeah, man, those ruffs were ridiculous.

And I know it's it's great golf having to survive that course, but it just seems like the primary goal is to just survive. I want to see, you know, a guy go out there and just accept. I'm not saying you have to tear it up, but you know, maybe a nice for the week, like a chance like a six under, you know, but whatever.

Speaker 3: Yeah, it was an amazing, great, great effort. At the end. That putt was so ridiculous and so cool. Guy's got a two put and he rolls in like a sixty foot or whatever.

The Phillies this weekend they swept the Blue Jays, and this was something I did not know the first time the Phillies have swept the Blue Jays in a series of three or more games. Ever, that's kind of wild considering how long I duly play has been going on for. They've never swept swept the Blue Jays in a series of three or more games. They won four in a row and they've won five out of six since they lost nine out of ten. And last week we was talking about what kind of changes needed to be made. So that's a great time to get started today's episode with first Pitch. First Pitch, guys back to us by our friends at Parks Casino. Parks Casino right off of I ninety five and State Road, last week, we're talking. You got no Bryce Harper. These guys can't get an extra base hit with a runner, nobody can hitch, nobody can hit.

Speaker 2: And but last week they beat the Cubs two out of three, a good Cubs team with a great offense, and they sweep the Blue Jays, an ale wild card contender. Looking at some of the offensive numbers, just a great week from the offense. Everybody that was not hitting last week seemed to be hitting last week, starting with you know, jt Real Muto, Brandon marsh Alec boum Motto Camp, Max Kepler, all those guys had big hits this week. It was an offensive explosion. They can hit a little bit.

Speaker 1: And you know, even yesterday Sunday, Bryson Scott for four, he saw thirty one pitches. It's very beneficial to your mates up and down the lineup. They get to get a good look at the picture. It also wears down the picture you get into the you know, the bullpens so really good off defensive performance the whole home stand. I mean, we could go, like you said, the sky was falling. They cobbled together really good pitching, really good starting pitching the whole homestand six games two point five ERA, and they averaged over six runs a game throughout the homestand hit three twenty two, So you know, it was really a really a great one. I mean, you know, a nono, they're two and a half back of the Mets, and I know they got four in Miami, but gosh, that lined up to be a great series against the Mets next weekend.

Speaker 3: It really could be. I was just impressed with everybody sort of contributing. The two guys in particular for me who really picked it up who I have been disappointed with and had a high expectations for were marsh and Kepler. Those guys seemed to put together some pretty darn good at bats. March is really hot. It was like eight for thirteen going into yesterday's game or whatever. Didn't have a great game yesterday, but and Kepler picked it up with a couple of hits. You know, a big home run. Both of those guys had basically came game winning extra base hits. It's nice to see those guys do some damage because they were getting really almost nothing out of them. But you know, it was one of those team efforts. See yesterday's game, six players had multiple hits. Six and ten players had hits. Even the guys off the bench were raking. Western Wilson got a knock, Marshawn got a knock. But other than that, I mean, six guys got more than two hits, more than one hit in that lineup, and that's doing some damage against a very good pitcher who had been outstanding. There was that narrative that these guys can't hit good pitching. Well, they did a pretty good job against Gosman, and they did a really good job against Barrios. The other guy, Bowden Francis kind of stinks and they didn't do too much damage against him, but they did enough to be able to win the baseball game.

Speaker 2: Brandon marsh Ruman, you said had eight hits last week, And as I'm watching these games, I looked this up just this morning. I was like, God, he seems to be hitting the ball. I feel like every ball he hit was the left left field, left center field. Six of his eight hits this week were center field, left of center field.

Speaker 2: Uh, And same thing with JT. I'm watching every time I looked up, he's slicing a ball down to the right field line, into the corner, to right field, to right center field. He had nine hits this past week, seven of them to the opposite field. So both of those guys hitting the ball the opposite field kind of just giving what the pitcher gives you.

Speaker 1: I guess Marsh's got a knack I've noticed for like when when the heat gets turned up, when people start questioning whether he should be sent down or or you know, relegated to relegated to the bench, and somebody's kind of nipping at his toes like Crawford up there in Triple A. He sort of gets in those situations and he turns it on.

Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm gonna tell you, I was an advocate of switching him out out, you know, if he didn't in the next week or so or two. And he continues not to do anything. I mean, he hasn't been playing the best center field. He hasn't really had not been contributing offensively. But I mean, you got to get him credit. He stepped it up when he needed to step it up, and he helped them win some baseball games. And he's making that lineup deeper otherwise. You know, if those guys in the back end of the lineup aren't doing anything, it's sort of dead right now, especially with stop back there, who just can't seem to be able to get to the fastball consistently. Even though he's still putting together good at bats, he just seems to not be able to get he's working underneath the ball. He's not using that top hand like he did a couple of years ago so consistently, and he just kicks filing balls back and filing a ninety four mile an hour you know, fastball back in ninety five and not being able to get to it, quite get to it. And he's just not using that top hand the way he had used it before when he started to really come on as an offensive player. It's there's some kind of judgment I think he's gotta make because he needs to contribute to this offense too.

Speaker 2: Yeah, well, Max Kepler too kind of right. I mean, everybody's talking about him in left field his production left field. It's so funny that the last week both of those guys have stepped up. The only guy in the lineup this past week that had ten or more at bats that did not have an OPS of eight hundred or better. That shows you how well the Phillies were hitting the ball was Bryson Stott. He he struggled this week. But I mean Kyle Schwarber, he only hit one ninety, but he walks seven times. He hit two home runs. Shocking, Yeah, exactly right. I mean even when he's not hitting, at least he's getting on bass. Boem hit four seventeen, I Kemp hit four seventeen, Rio Muto hit four oh nine, Kepler hit three p fifty three, Turner hit three zero four. You know, Castianos hit two fifty but with a double triple homer, four RBIs couple walks and like I mentioned Schwarber. So you know, the entire lineup up and down, just getting on bass, scoring some runs.

Speaker 1: Starting pitching throughout the series they had they had one. I mean everything was six and sevens. I think mcgable only went four. I was looking at Fangrafts this morning. They are number one starting pitching war nine point one. They're starting pitches of a nine point one war. I don't know if you're a War fan. I think it makes Reuben's head spin a little bit. But the closest, the next closest starting staff is the Houston Nationals at seven point four. So the Phillies are and shoulders, you know, they're leading to the majors and strikeouts just starting the rotation. I mean, Rangers putting together a stretch here that has been terrific.

Speaker 3: Yeah, just to talk about that starting pitching, I mean equality starts means something to me. I mean, you get six innings in this day and age, you get six innings. They got five out of six quality starts.

Speaker 3: Majors, not even close. And I do believe that's why I keep saying the same thing. I think they're starting pitching is the best in baseball as far as depth is concerned throughout, and I really honestly believe that that's what's going to keep them at the end of the day. It's going to keep them being a contending team, not just for this year, but for years beyond. You know, people are talking about, well, if they don't win the World Series, they'll have to break up this team. Okay, you're going to probably just lose Ranger Suarez. You're going to replace him with a guy like Painter or Able. It's still going to be a damn good starting rotation.

You know, Alec Bohm had the most horrific start of the season you could possibly have, and he was taking a ton of heat. They should have traded this guy, get rid of this guy. He stinks, he's got a bad attitude blah blah blah blah blah, and has a horrendous start to the season, which exacerbated the probably issues with the fans here in Philly. Well, guess what this man's been in Fuego And the fact that he's done it at the most perfect time with Bryce Harper out is gigantic because if they didn't have him going on in Fuego, then there'd be a real issue because Schwarber would never get a pitch to hit. Now, he's still being carefully pitched right now. But the fact that Alex Bahma was coming through with big RBIs big hits. He's hit a couple of homers lately. He doesn't get extended a lot, and he doesn't hit the ball out front a lot, but he's getting a ton of hits. He's come a long frickin way to hit. I don't know whatever he's hitting like two eighty five or two ninety now, he started off the first month or a month and a half of the season in about eighty now for him to bounce back and do what he done and at this time moved the first base now back to third base. You can say a lot of things about Alcabohm, but you can't say anything about his overall production, his ability to put the bat on the ball and be productive as a hitter. And I got to give the kid a lot of credit. He's going through a lot of stuff here in Philadelphia, and he's kept his head above water and he's doing some damage right now. At the biggest biggest moment when Bryce Harper's out, So he is my best of the week.

Speaker 1: Been great for like five weeks, really good. I don't have a problem if he smashes an occasional helmet. It's like what you do after that, if you're going to carry it and let it bring you down for the next five at bats. He had he smashed one the other night against the Cubs, and he bounced back really good. And I actually think we ought to think about maybe like doing a live podcast someday and having like a helmet smashing contest, letting the fans come in.

You love Ruben's choice starting rotation ranger Wheeler, I mean the guy who catches him, JT. What a homestand JT had six games, four multi hit games, hit four O nine nine eighty ops, all after you know, taking one in the fruit bowl the other night. And that's no, that's no, no laughing matter.

Speaker 1: That was really that can really mess up. But anyway, none of the above, I'm giving mine to Orion Kirkering. Love what I'm seeing. I don't know that he's gonna get my get near my off the wall preseason prediction of twenty two saves, but loving what I'm seeing of this guy. Last eighteen games, last eighteen appearances for Orion kirkering one run last fifteen zero runs and a whole bunch of big outs. So he gets a nice gooey slice of the pie, like cheese dripping down.

Jim is using his fastball again, man, and I knew that they you know, the hitters was sitting on that slider and slider and slider. He's throwing it all the time. He's throwing it. That was the only pitch you could throw for strikes. He's using that sinker and that four steamer much much better. And it's making that slider so much better. I love the confidence that he's showing now. He's like sort of pitching the way he was pitching in the minor leagues and when he first came up, like no fear, good stuff, great call.

I said, you know, I'm gonna go with auto Camp because you know the long journey that he took to get to this point, to get to the big leagues, undrafted amateur free agent, got overlooked by Aready, coming on the Division two school, gets promoted. It was a nice little story. And then last week auto camp. This past week, Auto Camp goes ten for twenty four double four RBIs eight ninety eight ops. He's the first Phillies player to have multiple games with three or more hits in his first eight career games since Art Mahon had three hits had three of those games in his first six career games in nineteen forty. Guys, remember Art mahann at all? Is that name ring a bell?

Speaker 2: Art Mahan was the former Villanova long time after his playing career. He played one season for the Phillies nineteen forty, I was the Villa Leanova baseball coach and longtime ad so oh cool, yeah, yeah, So I'm going with auto camp if he can't figure that out. He had a just a great week by him, a great story and you know, team looking for offense. You see him put up those numbers in Triple A. Who knows what the rest of the season is gonna look like for Auto Camp. Who knows how much he's gonna play, Who knows where he's gonna play, Who knows how it's gonna play out. But this week, great week by him. Everybody was wondering after seeing the success he had and all at all levels for the Phillies, particular this season in Triple A. So congratulations to Auto Camp on a big week.

Speaker 3: Hey, the cool thing about this, the good thing about this is, I mean we had a ton of choices, that's how good the week was. We could have but we could have chosen, you know, best of the week could have been like ten different guys. And that's a really good sign of a of a more complete ball ball club.

Speaker 1: He's a good impressive the way he stays back on breaking balls. Yesterday a couple of breaking balls down, you know, tough pitches, he got the bathhead to them, stays back drove him for base hits. He's got a good stick man. You know they're looking for if they could get a right handed bat and left field. That would be an awfully nice platoon with Kepler, I think. But he's only played seven games in his entire pro career in left field. I know they're going to work him out there to see what happens, but man, that would be something I definitely would take a peek at. I know defense is a shortcoming for him. He's playing first base. He's had a couple of little struggles over there, but the bat is impressive. When I look at Otto camp twenty five, almost twenty six years old, when he was in college, I think somebody should have and he was an infield or somebody should have said, have you ever have you ever tried catching?

Speaker 1: He could, you know, in a premium position like that, You know, that's you know, always on the lookout for a kid who can convert to catch, and you know, then you can really elevate, you can go, you can move quick if you can catch. You know. So I don't know if it's too late now, but you know it's uh.

Speaker 1: I tell I tell dads all the time around here. He's a good little player. Make him, you know, at least put it in his toolbox. Teach him to catch so he has as he moves up. Because as you move up, uh, you know, short stop, middle and field, they all get tougher. Yeah.

Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a sign of him, though, getting things turned around. It would be so big because you know, doing an his free agent here for him personally for this team. Yes, we're all to get him going, man, because you know the past, well, the first several weeks of the season we've been talking about he's you know, his career numbers right now lineup to be the lowest of his career. Man, if he could get going a little bit and just provide a little bit more punch, at the bottom of that bottom third, that bottom you know, half of that lineup would be and.

Speaker 3: That'd be great. And it's really about it, and he's pretty stubborn about it. It's really about his timing on his leg kick. I don't think everybody's like, oh, JT's toast. He's toast. He's not toast. He's one of he's one of the best. I mean, the man is one of the better athletes there are on on the field. He and marsh I think are two best athletes they've got, I mean, really fantastic athletes. And he keeps himself in tremendous shape. I mean he's catching every day, he's still catching well all those doing all those things. He's not toast. It's just a matter of him being able to get his foot down in time. And I think that timing mechanism throws him off for a while and makes him a little bit more streaky than he used to be.

Speaker 1: I'm really happy for him. He had a really, really good home stand. There is no more dedicated Philly. There is no more durable Philly, no tougher guy. He takes a beaten and he keeps coming back. So it was great swinging like that in not homestand.

Speaker 3: Bounty guy County, Yeah, when I was up in Bucks County, I used to do it all the time. It's my casino of choice. I mean, you know, besides the gambling stuff, they had basically everything. I mean they have the slots, they have the State of the Arts sports book, they got the poker room. Uh, but they have a lot more than that. I mean, it's sort of a destination place, it really is. There's places to eat. I mean you would get your food on. I mean there's some great places to eat. The Park Real Steakhouse, the Bamboo Noodle House, the Gastro Pub, Liberty Bell Gastro Pub, Chicky's and Pets have gone to several times, you know, on top of like, you know, the gambling stuff, I mean gone and done the entertainment, uh that you know, they've had headliners, they've had you know, all types of stuff. I've gone to see Old Dominion there. They have some great stuff, some tons of comedians, Ken Young, I've seen Nicky Glazer, I've seen there as well. I mean so over the over the years, I've seen a lot of stuff there, and it's a really great place to just hang out. I mean you don't just have to go, you know, to gamble necessarily. You can go do some gambling obviously, but you can also go and just have some fun. And I think they got a couple of great headliners coming up on July twelfth. It's a comedian Mark Norman, who's really darned good. And then as as far as entertainment, they got the pop band UB forty that and that's a pretty popular band. I mean, there's a lot of stuff going on there at Parks Casino, and I'm I'm excited about getting back there sometimes soon, taking the family. And by the way, you got to be twenty one because if you have a gamming problem, you got to call one hundred one eight hundred gambler. Just saying just.

Speaker 3: So I will tell you this. Jeff Barry, who's one of the you know, Buster Posey's advisors, used to be his agent. Now he's part of the advisory group I think in that organization. I've had had some discussions with him after Buster got his job, because you know, Busterer was the kind of guy that I'd love to like work with. So I talked to him about the possibility of maybe doing that at some point. But that didn't happen. Obviously, they made, you know, really good decisions, brought some other people back. But he's a baseball guy. He's old school man, he's bold. He wanted That's why he immediately got the shortstop. He knew he needed a shortstop to solidify the middle of his of his diamond, got a damas he knew he had a great third basement defensively, already knows he needs some nose, he needs some offense, and he just he went out and got a made a bold move to get a really damn good hitter, one of the best left anders in baseball. And uh, you know they do have you know, they got some money over there in San Francisco. But I love the move man. This guy wants to win. He wants to put the San Francisco Giants back on the map. And he's doing it with a guy who's disgruntled in Boston. And I don't think they handled it at all well with him bouncing around with the Bregman thing and the DH and the first base and all that stuff, and they sort of disrespected him. He was probably upset with it. And now he's gonna get a lot of respect there in San Francisco and he's probably going to rake.

I mean, they haven't had a got thirty home run guy? And what how long since Barry Bonds? Broh, they haven't had a thirty home run guy since Barry Bonds. Think about that for a second. That's insane. But this guy's got pop and he can hit and wherever he plays, whether it's DH first, I guaran te you this. They're going to have a conversation with the guy and they're gonna talk to him about what he wants to do and where they're gonna play him and all this stuff. I know, Chapman's on the third on the il right now. He might play a little third base in the beginning. He might not, But I'm sure they'll have a conversation with the man, which he deserves and deserved before things happen, so that they know exactly where he stands, and he knows exactly where he stands.

Because I think most of the guys we've been talking about over the past several weeks have been more along the you know, potential closers, which they need, they need some of those guys, you know, Pete Fairbanks, you know, probably not you know, maybe roaldis Chapman. If the Red Sox fall out, they sell you know, Kenley Janssen, you know, somebody like that, just some back end bullpen piece. Yeah, I mean, you know, Ryan Helsley probably not going to get the Cardinals.

And you know, I remember a couple of years ago I asked about him, maybe even a year ago. I was like, the guy has always hurt and he is he is always again, that's he's hurt again, and he's back in the lineup. Now he's dhing. He's back in the lineup. Now he's dhing. And uh, I think he went out the in the past week. He went out and just shags some balls in the outfield and then knee was a little bit sore. So you know, Ron Washington the other day last week, she said, you know, if if Mike says he wants to DH through the All Star break, he's going to DH through the All Star break. And then after the All Star break, if he says he wants to DH the rest of the season, he's going to DH the rest of the season. We're not going to put him in harm's ways.

His ERA was in the mid threes when you guys brought him over in twenty ten. So a couple more things guys want to mention this. Andrew Painter on Sunday with Trip in Triple A. Five scoreless innings, one hit, two walk, six strikeouts. Noteworthy for a couple of reasons. One is that was his first time pitching on regular rest. He pitched Tuesday in Triple A, got hit around a little bit. He really kind of struggled in his last two starts, but then had a real nice start on Sunday for the Iron Pigs. So he's three and two four three five e ra I believe in his last or maybe that was before that. Seven starts and then this week the Phillies are in Miami to play the Marlins Monday. I want to give a go over these pitching matchups real quick Monday, six forty start Mick abele versus Sandy Algantra. How was that for pronunciations?

You know, he's he's not back from the Tommy John surgery. But in his last two starts one point five zero arra striking out ten, walking to and and ten innings. So he's kind of getting it turned around. So Monday, Monday, and it's gonna be interesting for that reason. What kind of version of him are you gonna get? Former Cy Young winner? And then Mick Abel, uh, coming off his first bad start in the Big league. Is he going to rebound? Is he gonna you know, is he gonna walk some guys? You know what kind of version of Mick Gabel you're gonna get. So that's a very interesting matchup on Monday night. Tuesday Night, Jesus Lozardo coming off that real nice start. If you didn't listen to the Lozardo interview with US on Friday, to make sure you go check that out. He's pitching against Cal Quantrill Wednesday night, Ranger Suarez versus TBD I haven't seen the Marlins post. Who's gonna pitch on Wednesday night? And then Thursday night Christopher Sanchez versus Edward Cabrera.

Speaker 3: So really interesting able discussion because if Abel does not and always this is this is me, this is where I sort of gauge young players. And I think he's really poised. He's looked poised, he's looked under control. Uh as far as his motions, emotions are a very serious kid. If he can't bound back and be consistent, how long does he pitch before the discussion about Andrew Painter flipping in instead of him and then flipping him out. I mean that's a possibility because it's a performance based game. And if Andrew Painter is ready physically and he get into July or closer to July when he's will you know, now he's pitching on five days rest and now he's getting ready to roll. If he gets on a roll, do they flip him for Mick Abel? And you know, obviously we don't have Nola here. He's not coming back for at least till August.
