So our two year old Josie was really excited to meet the fanatic, and then the fanatic showed up about not planned or anything like five feet from us, and then we grabbed the picture.

Speaker 2: So the Phillies won two out of three this weekend against Washington. They lose the opener Deron blows his first save with the Phillies, but they win Saturday, they win Sunday. They now have a seven game lead over the Mets in the NL East. More on that series in a bit. Let's talk First Pitch with Parks. Speaker 5: Kind of the whole rotation has done pretty well since since the news on Wheeler. I mean, Nola came back last weekend in DC, didn't have did not have a good start, but he rebounded on Saturday and had an encouraging start.

But you know, I spoke with Alec Boum last week and he said, if there's any rotation that can that can weather this hit, it's it's this one. And it really it really helps that Christopher Sanchez is kind of like.

And I had a nice chat with the Cole Hamil's about that, and he he was just super impressed about watching his work ethic and watching his sides and stuff like that. He's he's really impressed with him, and so am I.

Speaker 5: I generally think there are fewer number ones than we think there are I think it's kind of overstated a little bit. You know, the ace or the number one term, but this guy is uh And with the Wheeler, like I said, with the Wheeler injury, the loss of a legit number one, you got somebody who can hand the ball to and game one of a of a series, and somebody you know that's gonna you feel very confident you're gonna get seven good ones from him.

Speaker 2: So yeah, like are you guys we never we never jumped to conclusions and go crazy and he's back or anything like that, but it was it was encouraging, right what we saw on on Saturday that you know, he got a lot of swings and misses. He got eleven swings and misses on the breaking ball, So the breaking ball seemed to be more effective than like you just mentioned, Ruben, the fastball.

Speaker 1: Interesting could see the overall crispiness of his stuff and the life on his fastball was good. He had that comeback sinker working and he just missed on several of them, didn't get calls on him, but got closer and closer to it. He starts getting that pitch going. That could be super effective for him, obviously, but I was really impressed by number one that he had more life on his fastball, but he also had a tremendous depth on his breaking ball. His breaking ball had more of a twelve six rotation than it did like a ten to four, which was, you know, which doesn't have as much depth. When it's working down and he's keeping his hand above the ball and he works down in the zone, that's a really good sign. His very first pitch was a fastball down that clipped the bottom of the zone for strike one. Very first pitch of the game. I thought, ooh, that was different, and he maintained it throughout, and I mean, listen, he gave up a couple of home runs because he tried to make a put an O two fastball run one in and it.

Speaker 1: It was a terrible pitch selection and a battle and a bad execution. But generally he pitched really well and he probably should have been out of that one inning if not for a West Western Wilson gaff.

Speaker 5: Well, I'd like to see him put together a little run here, a little string of starts before I say he's back. But really really encouraging to see a little more pop just encouraging to see him, you know, come out of that game with his head up, feeling good about himself. I am not bashful to say I am rooting like crazy for Aaron Nola, because you know, he is a tremendous person, one of the best people to ever walk in that clubhouse, in my opinion, been here a decade model citizen, been a great Philly a great Phillies pitcher. And you know, never, never in his decade here has this team needed him more.

Speaker 5: And you know, at least a good step in the right direction, Saturday needs to put together a few more steps before we say he's back. But damn, that felt good to watch Aaron Nola pit pitch well like that.

I mean, it's very he knows that he has to step up, he knows that it's a it's a combent upon him to do it for the team, and it was not us to see him sort of put it into action. Hopefully he can do it, put it in action for the next six or seven starts and then into the playoffs if he gets the opportunity to be one in the top three.

Speaker 2: Well, we were talking on Friday about, you know what the postseason rotation, even though they're weeks away from it, and do you go to the three lefties? And we all agree that you want to have Aaron Ollen there pitching, well to go left to you, righty left you or break it up however you want to break it up. My colleague Paul Cassela had an interesting little tidbit in his story from the other day. The last time a team started three postseason games with three straight left handers was the two thousand and nine Phillies in the NLDS cliff Ley Cole Hamble's Jay happ But there's a little bit of an asteris there. Do you want to do you do you remember why there's an astros that they had a right hand or scheduled to pitch Game three in Colorado?

And then Jim, do you remember sitting in the hotel lobby of the Fritz Carlton in Denver. Uh, there was no access that day. The game got snowed out. So we're like, we got to find something, right, and so we literally sat got ordered ordered some buffalo wings in the hotel. In the hotel restaurant, well, Pedro was having lunch with somebody, and we were there for like an hour and a half or like, we don't even know if he's gonna talk to us.

Speaker 5: I remember walking walking over to the team hotel from our hotel. We stayed at the crappy hotel and they but I remember walking through through the slush and and the snow on the on the streets of Denver. But if I could say one thing about one more thing about Nola, I know, getting long winded here, but if he can put together a run here and and the team is confident enough to say he's going to start in the in the postseason. Obviously it breaks up the lefties, but you know, it allows them to maybe use Lozardo's firepower in the bullpen and that in the first round.

Speaker 5: One of the things that has been overshadowed or not talked about a lot in this loss of Wheeler is that, you know, they were always kind of planning on using somebody in the bullpen. Now they were down one in the rotation. I think that could impact who goes to the bullpen. But if Nola can can deliver a little bit here, and I think Lozardo's firepower is best suited of that group to go to the bullpen, I'd rather leave Ranger in the rotation, but it could, you know, help the entire pitching staff top to bottom.

He tied and see his career high with ten in his first start and then blew it up, blew it up with eleven this past Sunday. Pretty awesome effort by him. So fun to watch him work. He's been really really special, and you know, I was concerned about how how he's going to pitch in the ladder half because he sort of fades at the end, But I don't know, he picked it up and really really threw well. I don't know what was going on with him in Cincinnati. I don't know if it was hot, I don't know if he was just wasn't feeling right, whatever the case may be. But that start he had and since he prior was not very good. But after that, those last two starts have been outstanding and he is my Manco Manco best of the week. It's picked really picked it up. Since since the news from Wheeler great one.

I mean this there's a little bit of question mark there. We all hope he's Zach Wheeler again, but does this change their view on maybe re signing Ranger, who's going to be a free agent, and we have to balance that against the need to resign Schwarber and maybe we all mudo a lot of questions and questions.

But I'm going to go with Trey Turner. And I'm gonna go Trey Turner because he had twelve hits ops over eleven hundred. But here's something that I wanted to mention, just something to kind of keep an eye on over the next few weeks through the end of the season, Trey Turner quietly moving up the charts in terms of nl MVP consideration. We've talked a lot about Schwarber and how Schwarber could he knock off Otani, but if you look at Fangraft's war and I mentioned this because a lot of the new the voters nowadays, they kind of maybe start with war to go. All right, who should I be considering right now? He is second in the National League in war behind Shohey Otani. I believe that number has not changed. Yeah, he's Otani's got six point zero. Turner's got five point eight. So you put those two guys together, and now you're sitting there going, oh, maybe maybe maybe Trey Turner could be a top three finish. Maybe the Phillies could have two top three finishes or two top five finishers. So Trey Turner from where he was at the beginning this season really kind of coming on offensively, defensively, stealing a ton of bases, having a heck of a second half, and kind of powering this offense or igniting this offense down the stretch.

We were talking about this a while ago, like a couple months, that we were going worst outfield production like forever in all of baseball and maybe ever and uh, And he's really done a nice job of being able to mix and matching. The guys have stepped up, you know, couples strong bat the strong, the bat well. Marsh got hot. He's cooled off a little bit. But it was nice, too nice to see that. And I think Rob Thompson deserves a little love for that too, no doubt.

Speaker 2: All right, So the Phillies play the Mets. As we said, beginning Monday night. They go into this series up at City Field with a seven game lead. They play them at seven times in the next seventeen games. Phillies are in a great position right now. Mets have not been playing well for a while, and the Mets had a five and a half game lead over the Phillies on June twelfth. Since then, the Phillies are thirty six and twenty five, second best record in the National League. The Mets are twenty four and thirty six. That's the fourth worst record in the National League. Only the Giants, Nationals and Rockies have been worse than the Mets. And it's really easy to see why the rotation. That's rotation has been dreadful an era of almost five in that span. The bullpen has been even worse in era over over just over five in that span. So the Phillies have a real opportunity to here to kind of bury the Mets. I mean, you know they have a substantial lead right now as it is. But you take two out of three, you go up by eight. You know, you play them next week, you split, or you win that series.

Speaker 5: You know they open up with Sancho and Lozardo, great place to start. The Mets, I think are going with Senga out of the gate. He hasn't had a great year. I mean, his strikeout numbers are way down, his hits parraintings way up. I think with Sanchez on the mounta tonight, I agree. I think you need to take two out of three and that goes a long way to bet toward burying that team. But I just think you need to, really, you got your best picture on the mound tonight. You need to come out of there with a w with your best guy on the mount tonight. And they have a lot of momentum, and I think the Phillies are playing with a ton of confidence and the Mets, I just wonder if they're gonna be a little tight because they know the importance of this series. If they don't make some ground up here, it's probably means they're done. So I think things shape up well for the Phillies to make a good showing they need to.

Speaker 1: I think the Mets have matched up really well against the Phillies. It will be interesting to see how they feel they have a good mojo against them. And when you over the last couple of years, you know, the Mets have had their number a little bit, and particularly in the playoffs, but you know they they play a pretty good, confident level of baseball against them, and so it will be interesting to see how confident and how much swagger this Phillies team has against them. I'm hopeful that they walk in there and do what they're supposed to do, beat them up, because you know they're a better team overall. There's no question the pitching is the huge difference, particularly the starting pitching. Obviously the bullpen now with the Phillies lining up the way they are, in the back end of that bullpen much better than the Mets as well. I mean, I have confidence that they're going to have some success against them up there. But you know, there's a reason why the Mets have some swagger against the Phillies because they've had their number a little bit. So we'll see how they react, how both teams react.
