It was kind of fun, guys, because it was just fun because it was an early April series against a really good team, the defending World Series champions. But it was also kind of fun for me anyway to kind of watch how the players and Rob Thompson handle all the questions about playing the Dodgers. You know, is this a measuring stick? Is this going to mean something come October? And they came off as a team that was like, it's gonna be fun. We're competitors, We're going to compete. We kind of talked about this last week, but they kind of said it today too. Like Rob was asked, you know, I knew this team was good already, you know, Nick Castianos. I asked him, I said, did you learn anything about this team or did it confirm what you already knew about this team? And he kind of said it confirmed what we already knew, which is we're a good team. But good, good weekend for him. Obviously, two out of three.

Speaker 3: It's about getting in, you know, now that they've expanded to twelve team six in each league. It's about getting in and getting hot and doing damage. But yeah, I mean it's not even you know, it's not even tax day yet. The leaves are not even out on the trees, and you know, so that's how early this series is. So to me, it doesn't define anything but it's, like I said, it's better than the alternative.

Speaker 3: The Phillies first played the Mets in a four game home and home if you remember that, and the Phillies took three or four and against the Mets, and then they got their lunch handed to them in October. So I don't know that has any bearing in October, but you know, you'll certainly take it a little bit of a conference builder.

Speaker 3: The crowds were electric, Several of the performances were electric, and you know, I think it was a good thing. But I kind of agree with Robi confirmed. They're a good ball club. We think they're a good ball club. They got good personnel, and they did a lot of things really well over this weekend to send the Dodgers gaming their first loss. They came in what eight no, gave them their first loss. So their first two losses. So now they go to Atlanta on Tuesday night. I can't believe Atlanta's what what are they? One and seven?

Speaker 2: Yeah, I got I know what they did last night Sunday night. I mean I can check that up. While well, you know, we're talking about it. Were struggling.

Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, it's certainly struggling. And they did not play on Sunday because they got rained out. But I will say that, yeah, I think the the best thing about this series for me is one this team. I think they already knew this. They know that they can play with anybody. But I think for the fan base that felt like the Phillies didn't do very much this offseason, the Dodgers did all these moves. They're the greatest team on the planet, you know, blah blah blah. You know, you have to the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Yes, the Dodgers are really really good team, but the Phillies are a really good team too. And the Phillies aren't even swinging the bats all that well. And they won two out of three. Think about that for a minute. They didn't have it very many extra base hits this this series. They only had one home run. It was the big Castiano's home run. I mean it was a big one, but they only had one home run in the series. And honestly, and I know they didn't have Freddy Freeman and that's a big one. But you know, some of their big boys schober Turner, even you know Harper to some extent Bohm. They didn't really do a whole lot of damage, and they won two out of three games against what is supposed to be the best team in baseball. So that tells you a little bit about one their talent and tow their grit, because they're a gritty team and they continue to that. You've seen that since twenty twenty two. They are gritty. They find ways to put themselves in a position to win, and they don't give up. And they had a chance to roll over after they lost the lead on Sunday, and they didn't roll over, and they came back and they won the baseball game. And they put together some good at bats back.

Speaker 3: From two deficits. They came back from two deficits on site. They really battled.

Speaker 5: And the other thing that they did is they put together some really good at bats. They not perfect, because it's not a perfect game. You can never be perfect in this game. But they put together some greater bats. I mean, they picked up what eleven.

Speaker 1: Walks and a whole slew eighteen walks I think on the series eighteen from a team that's supposed to have the best you know, starting pitching and bullpen and all of baseball.

Speaker 5: So you know, you're starting to see some of the fruits of the labor of them really trying to make some adjustments to put together decent a bats. They did not do a great job with men on third less than two outs. A couple of those old bats almost came back to Hauntum that said, they actually did put together some really good at bats, And I think the work that they, you know, things that they've been thinking about, swing decisions, passing the baton, all that stuff. You're seeing that come to light, and it helped him win a couple of games in this series.

Speaker 2: I thought it was that third inning on Sunday. It was a lot of fun where the rains coming down and glass. Now you could see he was like just miserable out there, and I thought Nick Castiallas gave an interesting quote. He said, Yeah, we noticed that we could see he was getting flustered, maybe just two or three pitches into the innings, so we just kind of let him beat himself up. And clearly he was having troubles throwing strikes. But they also kind of recognize that and didn't like doing anything stupid. So marsha was that. Marshawn walked, then Schwarber walked, then Turner walked, and that got that in and going. I can't remember what happened. Harper singled to score run, there was a wild pitch, Kapler walked, you know, they finally get him out of the game, and then cast Downs goes Grand Slam. So it's kind of, you know, just shows they have had a decent approach that again. I know he was not you could see he was visibly struggling, but they recognized it early again and Nick cast Downs with a huge hit there.

Speaker 2: It was pretty neat. So I wanted to mention that as we're talking about Tyler Glass now, but I also want to mention any concern with Jordan Romano. Rob Thompson says there's some concern there. Seventh inning tonight he comes in, it's not throwing. He has no fastball. Velosty one batter in. Also, a Ryan Kirkering is getting up. They were saving a Ryan Kirkering for the eighth or ninth inning. His four seen fastball in his first three games. Jordan Romando ninety five point six miles an hour. It's ninety three point six in his last two appearances. On Friday, when he got hit around a little bit, he threw one ninety one point three, but at the end he got back up the ninety five seven. Today it only touched ninety four point one. Now, Jim and I, Jim, you talked to him after the game. He says he's perplexed. He's perplexed. He's befuddled. How concerned should we be about Jordan Romano because that was obviously a big piece of this bullpen.

Speaker 3: He said, there's no red flags coming out of the trainer's room, but something's going on. Romando says he had enough work in spring training. He certainly had work here in the early early season, but the Villo has not come and you know they're gonna look at some tape. Maybe it's mechanical, maybe it's dead arm. But the fact that you know he pitched, you know, a very limited amount last year because the elbow injury and his signing to me looked like a really sound, solid roll.

Speaker 3: And I still think it is. I don't judge anything on a few appearances. Like I said, we're not the leaves, aren't You aren't even on the trees yet. It's that early. We're not even at tax day yet, it's that early. But you know, you want to see him firing, and he's not firing, and the manager's concerned, and you know, speaking with Romano, he's perplexed. So yeah, it's something to keep an eye on because you need this guy. You know, you're you're basically down two leverage arms with Hoffman and Estevez exiting, and you know they were banking on improvements of others and the addition of Romano, and if that piece of the equation is not there, it's gonna impact things. I mean impacted things. On On Sunday, he did not have a good inning. He was charged with you get up three runs Phase three batters, they all score and it took a really nice rally in the bottom of the seventh to take back the lead. I think that's what we were talking about earlier. This team really battles and they got Jordan Romano off the hook, but they need more from him. They need to figure it out. He was He's a really stand up guy. He you know, he admitted it wasn't there for him and he's scratching his head and he's going to try to find it so off day on Monday, and I suspect, you know, they're looking at that already.

Speaker 5: I gotta I get a little concerned. When Rob Thompson, he's usually not so direct when he says I am concerned. Yeah, right, And when he says that, then there's some concern. I mean, it's obvious that he doesn't have the sharpness and his slider doesn't have the velocity and arm speed on his fastball. I'm not sure if it's mechanical, emotional, or medical, but there is some combination of those things that are not allowing him to perform the way he has performed in the past. And we've seen him really good in the past. Now, yeah, I think you're right, Jim, real stand up guy. I'm sure you know he knows he's not throwing well. Yeah, and he's admitted that, and I'm sure he's I mean, he's a competitive personal. This man wants to have success and he's wishing that he could be contributing in a more positive way to this ball club. He knows how important it is, but it is. It's a concern. And imagine if they didn't have Alvarado stepping forward the way he stepped in this early part of the season, it could be a little troublesome for this bullpen. That said, I say that a lot. I think that they I think that you know, they they've handled it really well, even with you know, amount of really struggling in some leverage innings and they've sort of worked past some of that. Hopefully they can straighten it out and put it behind him. But I'm sure they're going to be taking a peak. The one thing concerned that I do have about it is that most closers, most they ride on adrenaline, and the adrenaline in the ninth is different from the adrenaline in the seventh and eighth. Now, I don't know if he's not feeling the adrenaline if he's not feeling comfortable pitching, you know, earlier in the game. But at some point he's gonna have to start feeling a little bit more comfortable because unless he's going lights out and really dealing, he's gonna have to be able to figure out how to get that adrenaline rush, how to make that happen and had the ball come out a little bit better, because if he doesn't, then he's not going to be pitching a whole lot of leverage innings.

And today when he says I am concerned about his velocity, how many times have we seen the guy struggle one at bat or two or three at bats and fans will say, like, why isn't Rob getting somebody up in the bullpen? You could see he he lost it, And Rob will say, listen, I gotta give this guy. You know, his stuff was fine whatever, but one at bat, Ryan Kirkan was going in the bullpen. He got somebody up. That says a lot as well. So, h gentlemen, it's the first show of the week and that means it is Manco and Manco, best Week, Manco and Manco the best of the best. Manco make apiece of the best of the best. This is where we pick our best Phillies player, moment, performance, whatever we want from the past week. There's a lot to pick from. Cuts, there's a lot to pick from.

Speaker 5: I think Alvarado has been a savior for them, and I think he's been outstanding. He had a little bit of a glitch inning on Friday, but he bounced back and just dealt on Sunday really in a really tight situation against the big boys. He went on Tawi, Mookie Betts and Edmund and both all three of those guys are pretty damn good, and he did his job pretty pretty impressive.

I'm going with at Mundo Sosa ed world and you know, played in six games now, he's like eleven for twenty And I thought on Sunday, I just love when when little things, I mean big things. And you got Blake trying it on the mount and he just a two to two pitch. He sends him right to the ground with ninety five point five miles an hour, right under the chin. Sosa goes down and he pops right up and he digs back into the battles box with a three to two pitch, runners on the corners, one out and he you know, he puts the ball in play, you know, down to third base and you're thinking, oh boy, might be a double play, inning ending double play. The game is already tied. Sosa absolutely runs like the cops are chasing him, and he beats out that potential double play ball to get the go ahead run home. And I thought it was a real nice little kapper for a heck of a start he's had, Like I said, eleven for twenty, beats out that ground ball, gets that run home, and it was it was just a.

You know, I think he's had five multi hit games, and yeah, he's hid in five point fifty eleven for twenty and you know, afterward, Rob said admitted Rob Thompson admits got to find a way to get him in the lineup so he can play enough positions. He can play three in field positions. I bet he could play four and he can play some outfield. They're going to have to start finding a way to get him in there, and I think they are. On Sunday, Alec Boum sat, I doubt he would sit again on Tuesday. I mean, he said number one, third basement. They got to get him going. He's got to play, but Sosa has positional flexibility, and it looks like Rob is gonna start utilizing it a little bit more to get him in there. He's a hot bat.

Speaker 2: You talked to Nick cas We all talked to Nick cast after the game, and you asked him about the Sosa getting dropped down on that pitch, and he gave a great quote. Uh, and I used it in my story because it was so good. He said, stud you see how eager he was to get back in the box after that. Can't teach that. So that's why they love They love that guy, they do. I cannot express how much the players in that clubhouse for so many reasons, Yes, for so.

Speaker 2: He was flying down that line too, Jimmy right. I mean, not very few players on this team could have beat out that throw, but he was. He was one of the guys that could beat out that throw. So his speed also is a tremendous value. My best week manco manco, I'm going with something that happened late on Friday night, JT. Realmuto throws out show Tani to end the eighth inning and does a strike him out, throw him out double play caught stealing to end the game. Throws out Chris Taylor trying to steal second base, and he did it with a gash on his thumb. It wasn't really a gash, I should say, it was more like a paper cut. But he was bleeding after opening up a water bottle, cutting himself on a water bottle in the eighth inning, and I guess Jordan Romnal kept getting the ball back and he kept looking at his hand because he's like, am I bleeding somewhere? Because the ball hall had all this blood on it, and they realized it was actually JT's hand. But we talk a lot about JT being a free agent after the season and all of this stuff, and those are two huge moments in a game where you have one of the best defensive catchers in baseball, with one of the best pop times in baseball, one of the best arms in baseball. He throws out Shoheyo Tani, who was thirty eight for thirty eight in the regular season going back to last year, and then he gets Chris Taylor again to end the game on a on a bang bang play that you know, instant replay had to overturn the call at second but jt Reel moved. That was the first time the Phillies had ended a game on a cost dealing since August tenth, twenty twelve, when papal Bond threw to j Rowl at second base to get Carlos beltran. First time I catch her throughout a base runner to end a game since Chouch throughout Dave Murphy on May twentieth, twenty eleven, So it's been a while since the game ended like that. But jt Reel Moudo did it. Yeah, very very impressive, very awesome.

Speaker 5: Well, first of all, Tana should have been running in front of Lookie Betts in that situation, and I'm glad he did. And he also had to give a little bit of credit where credit is due, obviously, great throw by by JT. I was a point four to seven release time, eighty six miles an hour while and and he has been the best at pop time, has been uh number one or number two for the last several years and again this year. Excellent. But you got to give some some love to Romano because he's super long to the plate. But he sped up and he's been working on this too, a little bit, like like Aaron Nola last year who starts sped up his delivery because the steal is back in and you have to combat it somehow. He sped up his delivery. He was down to like a one bet, like a one four seven or one five. He's normally like a one seven or one nine, and he's easy to run on. But he sped up his delivery a little bit. Give him a chance to throw him out.

So how about them Phillies. Philly is doing a good job again.

This is going into today from the these so like the first two seasons plus the first two games of this series. This is how they've attacked him. If you can see this, this is just like a pitch count on the bottom, a lot of loan away, a lot of low and in. I went back and looked at the strikeouts today Chris Sanchez first inning, it was a change up down, and in the second strike out was a change up in. And then the third strikeout that Sanchez got him on was a fastball in. So they've they've clearly got a plan there. Don't elevate the ball against shoey Otani.
