Speaker 1: Hey guys, welcome to Episode two. Five. Coming up, we'll play another round of music trivia against the musician Adam Hambrooks the champ Kenny defend his title. That would be up against a listener named Brittany. We'll also talk about artists whose biggest hit ever was a cover, from Elvis to Alison Krause to Janice Choplin, like their biggest hit was actually a cover song some of you may not even know. Top five songs coming out this week or top five pieces of new music coming out. We'll start at number five. Lauren Atlenna announced on my radio show that in September she's putting out a new EP which is a bunch of songs, not a full album, you know, five or six songs, and it's called Getting Over Him. And this is the song that came out today, well, first song from the whole thing, This is called Run. At number four, Rascal Flats has a new EP out called How They Remember You. They did a Kenny Rogers cover on the album Fitting. Because we're by to talk about covers, here's their version of Through the Years. At number three, the New music list Randy Travis has a new song out called Fool's Love Affair. It's his first single since his stroke. It's one of the many songs he recorded before a stroke, and it does sound like classic Randy Travis. The timing is significant too, because thirty five years ago, the month that it was his major label debut single on the Other and Only Other Hand came out. But here's Fool's Love Affair, Old straight, same old. At number two, Nikita Carmen has a new song out with Walker Hayes called then Some I'll Get Over You and then again that and We'll talk to Her. Coming up in a few minutes to The number one release on my list this week is Dan and Shay. They have a new song out called I Should Probably Go to Bed, So I Should Probably go to bed. After that, Phil Collins, I'm gonna get dunge and roses incorrect, it's Genesis. Do you know any Phil Collins music at all? Um? I feel like there might be like a Disney song that he dies. Oh my gosh. So do they pay for you to do that since it's an exclusive or do you do it and weren't got to deal with them? Yeah, so, I mean they just came to us because they were just getting a bunch of artists right now to kind of do that, and they would you know, they would on the recording and then you know, they haven't exclusive for for a while, so so it was up on Amazon. Um, you know, it was kind of like their thing for I guess three months and then we then we sent it everywhere else. That's pretty cool deal because it's expensive to record a song. It is not cheat the producer to get people who come play on it like thousands of dollars. Yeah, yeah, for sure, that's pretty cool to do. A good for Amazon for doing that. This is a really cool A little bit more and it's all over everything now so you can find out wherever you can find out wherever you listen to music well, and I was gonna tackle this without you. You are the reigning champion in music trivia, so I was like, hey, stick run. So whether they turn it gets along into a great song or just reinvigorate and old classic. These are all artists whose biggest hit of their career, some of these so far was a cover song their biggest commercial and chart success. Okay, so we have clips of the originals and the covers. So oh, we'll play Alison Cross when you say nothing at all? First, here you go, you face, lets me know that you need that's the truth in singing. You never touch of Now who's sang it originally? Yeah, lets me know that. So both of them are so good it's hard to pinpoint which one makes you feel more. I know. And and uh, because this was my favorite Keith Whitley vocal and this was the thing that this song is the this one and Stranger to the Rain, I'm no Stranger the Rain. Those are my two. Like Keith Stranger the Rain is such a jam and um and but but this song also like introduced me to Alison Krauss. And so it's hard. I can't I don't know if I can pick a favorite between the two, and most times that you have a cover, maybe the like Taylor Acorn put out a song last week Matchbox twenty on Well and it's really good. Yeah, and her version of it made me listen to the words more than the original, which which is obviously a much bigger hit for international smash, But this song makes me feel it more because of the production, because of how she sings it. Usually a cover versus the original, one of the other will do one of the other for sure. Alison Krauss and Keith Wiley, they both are like heart stabbers in different ways. Yeah, And you know, I think the thing that makes a voice is like everybody like tends to think like, well, he's a good singer, he hits all the notes that the thing that brings it out. Um. I think in songs is is like the texture of the voice, like how the voice actually like vibrates through the speakers. And Alison Krauss and Um and Keith Whiellie, I mean they're just like masters of singing, like with tone and with like clarity and the sharpness that just it's just not many other places I probably haven't streamed or played. I'm no stranger to the Rain in so many years. But tonight, after talking to about it, like last night, I was listening to pay Me a Birmingham Man, Yeah, and I tweeted and I said, man, because there's a key change whenever he goes from chorus to chorus, because it goes did you pay me and Birmingham and then it switches up and the key change he goes there. It is right there, there's the key change. And I was like, oh, I just had to listen to it. I was sitting in my room working last night on the show, looking up some stuff, reading some notes, and I heard the key change. I'm like, I haven't even noticed the key changes. I knew there was such thing as a key change. I tweeted it out and he retweeted it. They started, they started using key changes, you know so much that that it just got like it got cheesy. And so now it's kind of like pass a to do a key change in the song. But man, it will placed key change will kick you right in your heart's crotch. Let's explain a key change real quick, so on that song. For someone who isn't extremely musical like myself, a key change just means you're singing it in a in a different like or yeah, that's how I would explain it. Kid Like, if I'm talking to you like this, but I want to do a talking key change, I would then do a talk. Yeah, this is a talking key change. I'm talking like this, So explain it now in more musical way. So in a more musical way, you can kind of think of like, um, every song is in the key, So think of the key as like the floor of the house. And so so your feet are on the floor, and then you can jump around on the floor and you can do flips on do flips on the floor, do jump at Jack's or just sit on the floor if you want to um. And that's kind of what melodies melodies do. They play off of that floor. Now, when when you have a key change, it's like the floor of the house all of a sudden elevates and then you're at a different spot, you know, and so and so you're coming from a different You're you're doing flips on a different floor. The national anthem has a key change in it. No, not necessarily how I sing it is you're advance you um, all right, here's another one. Let's see I always love you obviously, Whitney Houston. And I would imagine unless you know country music a little bit, and I think for us this is old hat. But Dolly did this, recorded it, wrote it big hit for Dolly. Here's the guy. Dolly did my radio show. She's done it a few times. And one time she came in and she was in a really good mood. And I know, if somebody's in a good mood, I can go places that if they're not, if they're not in the best mood, they're in the middle mood. It kind of just talk about it. Then we'll be awful a little bit, like I know the floor. Yeah, but if they're just in a great mood, I'll go all over with them, just kind of see whether there with her head. And Dolly got into the whole thing about writing all of her hits, and I think she wrote this one and Joe Lean the same day, same and she but she talked about and I've heard that before, but she talked about that and that she was in Nashville driving near where the radio station is and she heard Whitney Houston singing this on the radio. Didn't you know? She cut it like she had heard she might for a movie, but she never heard the version. She wouldn't it had never been confirmed and none of that happened. But she heard it on the radio. Oh my goodness, can you imagine that in two thousand twenty. I can't imagine that. Uh, let's see, because I think somebody would just cut it to home and then send it off and it would starting to get played. Yeah, ring of Fire, Johnny Cash, I fell into a ring of fire. I too, burning ring of fire. I went down, down, down, and the flames one fire And that was a cover ended you that, right? I don't think I knew that. So it was written by June and Merle Kilgore, but it was recorded by June's sister. I need a carter, No, man, I did not know that. You should have put that on the music trivia. I would have lost well if we put this in it. So next time, if it does come up, you know this is knowledgeable. The music podcast about that, Yeah, I never I never would have come across that. Man. See, I'm a music fan, but I'm I'm just kind of a music fan of like what I like, and I'll get I'll get a little bit nerdy, but um, but like I have to really go out of my way to hit something like that, and sometimes it just I just miss it, you know. It was written by Bob Dylan, drink Man, Onelmendig. The original was written and performed by Bob Dylan, who recorded the song first, but actually released it after Jimmy Hendricks version was pressed. Oh wow, see, I didn't know that. My goodness, Elvis Pressley Hound Dog, you ain't nothing but dog? Have you been? The grace line? By the way? Now to go? That's what Eddie says to like he said. He says, because I am a music nerd, I love learning about music that I only listen to. I love learning how people popularize genres of music, like the one person that broke it and then everybody started following, like with Elvis. Listen, Elvis is one of the biggest pop stars of our lifetime, right, not even our lifetime, before our lifetime, I've ever in modern Western music. That being said, he was a white person who stole black music. I mean this was a hound Dog was originally performed by a female rock icon, Big Mom Thorton. Both voices that do something to you. Listen to that, lady sing. I would love to go to Graceland, though, we were thinking about. Caitlin and I drove to Arkansas and we're driving back because we've got a cabin out there now we're going back next week. Oh nice, But we were like we should stop a grace something. I think maybe three times on that way, and twice once I got we robbed, my car got broken and the other time my car got broken into. There's nothing they can steal anything. This last spring, we went to uh They do a thing called uh Um Country Cares for Saint Jude, you know, so you know what I take that. I've been there for that. I've been to saying Auch a bunch of times. I guess I don't consider that Memphis. Yeah, fair enough, it's right at Memphis. I've been to Saint you By ten times, you know what. Never got robbed, mostly one on the tour bus though, because I would get off work as we would just take a bus. I could get a nap. But go ahead, continue, ars, I'm stupid. I've been so many times we we snuck out, me and my my radiotet. We snuck out. We went to Graceland and I had never been. I've lived within two hours of Memphis my entire life. Never been. And then we go through the whole thing and we get there and you know, maybe kind of a little bit cloudy or whatever, but we go through the whole thing and you get to the point where you're you're in Elvis's racquetball court in the last place where where he was seen alive. And then uh, and then after that you go into the garden where he's buried. And as we walk through there, like it starts raining the most like gentle ad emo rain you've ever seen. And I was like, oh man, this is just how your this is how it's supposed to be. What's the coolest part of that whole tour, man? I think anytime you get to just like walk around like hallowed ground, like where where somebody who breathe such rare air like did their thing. Like when you get to walk around there, I mean, there's just like there's just like a feeling to it. I kind of get I kind of get goosebumps thinking about it. I do want to go. I Also, I don't know why I don't associate Saint Jude met with Memphis because Double Edge its St. St. Judis. It's a big I mean St. Jude Memphis.
