There's a little raining when we first got here, but the sun has come out because it is September twenty second and we're talking to the number twenty two man himself, Tayden Lorenzen, son of Jared Lorenzen, also worn number twenty two. It's man, I'm telling you, it's so cool for me to see how you've grown up and not just be this football guy, but to be a great young man. You know, they said, we've known you since you were a little guy. He always called you little man. You know, little Man's got a tournament this weekend. Little Man's got a football game this weekend. So I know he's super proud when he sees the person you're becoming. I just the football player, but the person you're becoming.

Speaker 4: Yeah, my main goal in life is to act exactly like he did towards me, at least, because there's he was always the most humble guy possible. He never said anything bad unless I did something wrong. I think he had a He evenly distributed his being humble and telling people when he's right.

Speaker 4: Yeah, it's definitely a feeling for sure. In the moment, not so much, but like when I'm sitting here talking to you guys that I start getting that feeling. In the game, there's so much adrenaline and I can't think about anything except for the game.

You were saying great things about the school here, and then I had some friends text in that are local. They're telling me, like people like the tailgate front yards and like you it's not just in the stadium, the whole town is pretty much shuts down for Friday nights.

Speaker 4: Yeah, the whole town loves Friday night. It's actually right over there in that parking lot is our tailgate parking lot, and they walk into here from the games. They all line up on the Broadway or the Avenue of Champions and we walk down into the game. It's just it's that feeling Friday night lace we're about to play a game, and it gets everybody ready to play.

Speaker 2: And it's not just here. When you guys go on the road, and like when your dad was playing, him and Derek Smith were at the end of their prime, it was like a traveling circus man. Every time they grow into town. Everybody wanted to see those two guys play.

Speaker 4: Yeah, Like we traveled to Cooper and our fans, our community is there immediately their gating there, they find a place and our student section is is really good. It's probably top five in the state for sure. Like how we traveled to Boyle County also, they were all there. That's two and a half hours away just for a football game. And that's how much they love it here. And that's the spirit we bring to Kentucky.

Speaker 6: So what about some of your stuff, Like you know, I got to know him so well with our football podcast. Just about his pregame rituals and things. Do you have like a like a pregame mill you stick to, or any routine or any superstitions that that you could share with us.

Speaker 4: I feel like every time I have a superstition, I I get off of it anyway, So I just do whatever until the game. I have no always pregame, this superstition, none of that, and literally just get ready and go play a game, just get locked in it.

Speaker 2: Did you grow up living and dying with Kentucky like he did? I mean he was living die with every long after his career was over. He's living and dying with every play. After they beat Florida, he called in the post game show and teared up, started crying. He was so happy they'd finally beat Florida. Are you that emotional? Do you get into it that much?

Speaker 4: Not as much as he did, obviously, I don't think anybody gets into it. But I'm definitely a UK fan for sure. But there's there's a line between die hard and the UK fan, and I don't know if I'm gonna cross that line, but.

We said, when Jared Lorenzen and Derek Smith we're here at Fort Thomas Higlands, it was must see football, must see basketball. You guys are like a traveling road show, Derek. Derek Smith joins us now. But like I told Tayton, there's something magical about that name Lorenzen and that number twenty two up here at four Thomas Highlands, no.

You know again, I was here for the game Friday night, and my nephew plays on the team as well, so I try to come back for some games and geez, it's just it's amazing to watch him play and see you know, I just remember growing up again. Jared and I grew up from literally when we were like five years old, playing football, baseball, basketball together and so I got up close and personal look at Jared and everything that he did. And so then I'm standing in the stands watching, you know, in every his mannerisms, everything is just a replica of Jared. When he gets tired, he holds his hands the same way on his hips, you know, and Jared would be tired. The ball was in his hands for every play. Half of his touchdowns, he didn't even celebrate, you know what I mean, because he was working so hard. And that happened Friday night. I mean, I'm looking at my dad and I'm like, he didn't even celebrate the touchdown because it's just he's a workhorse, you know, he understands what the assignment is and he's just he's so much like his father. It's crazy, and it really is. It's a blessing for me, and I have a lot of gratitude to kind of experience that whole thing and then be able to come back here for the game and watch him do it.

Speaker 7: Yeah, there pee wee football. Jared and I had a golf outing once and he came to pick me up. We were playing in a Highlands basketball golf outing. He came to pick me up and we came. We came to the game first for a little bit before we ran out, and and yeah, I mean at that moment, I.

Speaker 7: I mean, it was just but it's it's it just makes sense, you know. I mean, you know, I would say Jared, he would say, there was this god given ability that I was given, you know, and I'm just glad that I was able to go out and do these things. And I think it's been passed to Tayden, no question about it.

Speaker 7: Oh absolutely, I mean look at this, right, I mean he's just you know, with Jared and I didn't have KSR come up into the radio stations with us. So you know, it's like his father laid the ground work, and his father did all this work and did so many great stuff in the community and Fort Thomas and in Kentucky, and so I think it's only appropriate that Tayden gets to kind of swim in those riches a little bit, you know, because that's what you do for as a parent, right you want to set something up and hand it off to your child and allow them to flourish. And I think that's what he's doing. So you know, I think he'd be very thankful for that.

Speaker 6: We're focusing a lot on Jared, but you know, you had quite the athletic career right beside him. Just so we here at Highlands, same thing I said to Tayduan. But now Holland's is kind of getting back considered a top ten and maybe top five in some places around the state, trying to get back to that winning tradition and get some trophies. Do you feel some pride, especially with you having a nephew on the team, that it's got your nephew, Taydan, and then kind of trying to get Hollands back to where it.

Speaker 7: Was absolutely all the old guys, all the old teammates. We all came Friday night and we were hanging out watching and you know, it was the atmosphere. Everything just sort of took us back, you know, and god, I can't believe it was twenty five years. Sometimes I have a hard time dealing with that. But yes, you know, we're we're always supportive of anything we can do for Highlands and for the community here and obviously for the program, and we want football and basketball. You know, my nephew played on the state championship basketball team. So my nephew, now Aiden is a senior right now. His older brother Austin, was a member of the state championship basketball team. So you know, the guys were all down and rub we went down there, and you know, so we were like, you guys took away our mantle of the best. We still feel like we might be the best Highlands football team ever, but I don't think we can say we're the best Islands basketball team ether because we won step short of that state champion.

Speaker 2: You guys get the semifinals of the finals.

Speaker 7: We lost to the We lost in the finals. I saw sophomore year to Louis Boe Eastern and then Scott County beat us in an epic final four game, semifinal game my junior year, and then my senior year we got upset in the first round.

Speaker 6: We were in a tour of the Hall of Fame there until your point. I even took this photo of you and Jared have your jerseys and Rosston and Meltner Fields have your jerseys framed in the basketball Jim. But the boys state champion banner is much bigger.

Speaker 7: They're pretty proud of that, rightfully, so rightfully, so yeah, I think our best banner up there was just ninth region, the ninth Reagion champions. You know, we we wore that honor, but yeah, we you know what, And by the way, that night was amazing. I was honored when Joe's parents or when Jared's parents asked me to give the speech for Jared for that night on the Hall of Fame, you know. And it was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. You know, it was still sort of raw in the moment, but I'm really glad I did it. At first, I'm like, I don't think I can do it. And then when I did it, I'm like, I'm glad I did that, you know, because just like I said, you you know, here we are twenty five years and I think back all the time. I'm like, man, it was really the glory days for us, you know, God, we we just we lived in the moment and we were able to do so many great things. And you know, a lot and everybody thinks about us with football and basketball, but we had a lot of fun playing baseball too. We were really good at baseball. We decided our junior year not to play baseball, and the baseball coach here just about wanted to fight us. I never will forget that, but but we just, you know, it was just such an amazing journey through all that stuff. And like I said, I just you know, I set up in the stands, I'm here right now, and I just look back with gratitude of just being able to be a part of it and get to know Jared and be his friend for so long. And you know, now I get to see his son do the same thing, and so hopefully one day I'll see my son do the same thing. You know.

Speaker 2: So you know, when you guys, I said this earlier, when you were all you and Jared were playing. You'd go on the road. Place was packed. You were like a traveling road show. Everybody wanted to come see Jared Learning and Derek Smith play football, basketball, whatever it was. And I tried to tell that to Tait, and I said, you don't understand the entire state, Big Blue Nation got your back. They they love you because of what your dad, the joy he brought them. And Taytan said, he kind of understands him, But do you think he fully grasp the love that this state has for the Lorenzen name?

Speaker 7: I think you you probably start to get get an understanding of the moment and the gravity of it all. But I also think, like he's just got to be a kid. He's got to be seventeen years old, and he's got to have fun with his with his teammates. He's got to be able to to be Tayden, you know. And I think he wears the badge for, you know, his father's legacy really well. But I also would just say, you know, like I think he really I think it's really important probably for him to make his own legacy, you know, and for him to do a good point good point, and so I think it's really a mixture of both for me with taydan Is, you know, I mean it's a spitting image, you know, when he puts his pats on it and he goes out and play, like I said, his mannerisms. I'm just I'm like, I'm watching Jared all over again. And but you know, he's creating his own aura, and I think that's gonna be a traveling road show. It doesn't help that his father laid the groundwork. Yes, I do believe that if he wasn't Jared's son, he'd still have a road show because he's that good.

Speaker 6: So you and Jared obviously went on to Kentucky together. I assume you're keeping up the teams. Talk a little current ball, how we feel.

Speaker 7: I got I was there last weekend. I was there in the Old Miss game. I mean so two weeks ago. Yeah, I you know, I think they're doing great. You know, as a former player, I see things and I'm just like, oh my god, you know, just line up sometimes right in the first half and yeah, and so you know, there are times where I get a little frustrated as a former player because you remember those things and you remember how important it was, you know, and then when when it kind of goes the other way. But then I'm like the fan comes right back into me, you know, and they do something really well, and I'm cellible, reading like everybody else, you know, and I'm like, this is how it felt when they watched us. Funny, you know, but yeah, I think the South Carolina game is going to be so important. It is just crucial. There's no reason why we can't win that game, no reason.

I was like, man, you know, it's just special to see great tight ends keep keep going at Kentucky. So yeah, I mean, you know, I think, like I said, I I just I don't see how you know, we cannot be a little bit more competitive this year. I think the Old Miss game was tough, but again, I would have thought that tou Lane would have given Old Miss a little bit better of a run, and they didn't. So you know, I'm talking to a buddy of mine and I'm like, man, maybe we are better than I thought. You know, like, I mean, you kind of want to think like not. But then I'm like, I think we are as good as these guys. I think we should be able to win these games. But it just and this stuff, it just comes down to doing the things right. Dude.

He's a good coach in the locker room. Wish he'd, you know, maybe bitz a little more, maybe get a little more aggressive, but that's just his style of play and it's actually worked for Kentucky many times. You know, sometimes against the Tennessees and the fast paced offenses that can really throw it around, it doesn't work out. But overall, I think he's done a good job.
